Dwarf Assassin?

$
0
0
I have recently played Halfling and Dwarven bounty hunters and also a Halfling assassin using darts. The Dwarven character was the most fun. I am thinking now to play a crafty Dwarven assassin from BGEE to the end of BG2EE.

Is a Dwarf viable as an assassin given the dexterity? I will have a 2nd thief with me to handle traps/locks in both games, but am doubtful on the combat side, given that Assassins excel at ranged high APR weapons.

What about weapon proficiency order? Could crossbow/throwing dagger work as his ranged weapons, or best to stick to the higher APR weapons?

Shields in Baldur's Gate 2 that use the wrong model.

This has been in the game since it was released, there are certain shields that have the wrong model. The Shield of the Lost +2 and Dragon Scale Shield +2, are both medium shields (and require +12 STR) but use the model of a small shield.

Is there a reason this hasn't been corrected in BG2:EE?

Making your own team in Baldur's Gate.

Do you ever make your own team when you play Baldur's Gate?

If someone ask what the difference is between Icewind Dale and Baldur's Gate, most people will start with saying that in IWD you create your own team, and in Baldur's Gate you have NPC's that join you. But do any of you create your own team in Baldur's Gate as well?

I've completed the Baldur's Gate trilogy so many times with the NPC's that I know most of their dialogues, have done all the romances and know their ending slide in ToB by heart. It's interesting how you change the way you play the game as you get more experienced with it. I used to play mostly solo back in the days, a few years later I didn't enjoy playing solo anymore and picked up a few NPC's, mostly 4-5 but never a full 6 man team. Now the last year I've started to make my own teams (ala Icewind Dale) and give my characters their own background and history.

Right now I have two no-reload games that I'm jumping between, my Cavalier game where I'm using NPC's, and my Undead Hunter where I've created my own team. I happen to enjoy Undead Hunters and Clerics, so I've made yet another Lathander Team that focuses on destroying the undead. I also edited their colors in BG:EE keeper, so that everyone have the Priest of Lathander color setup.

1.) Undead Hunter, Male, Half-Elf. ** Bastard Sword, ** Sword and Shield Style.
2.) Undead Hunter, Female, Half-Elf. ** Two Handed Sword, ** Two Handed Weapon Style.
3.) Priest of Lathander, Male, Dwarf. * Sling, * Sword and Shield Style.
4.) Fighter/Thief, Female, Halfling. ** Crossbow, ** Quarter Staff.
5.) Skald, Female, Human. * Dart, * Dagger.

I don't mind my CHARNAME being a bit more powerful stat wise (he is a bhaalspawn), but I try to make the others a bit more realistic, compared to the normal NPC's you find.

Priest of Lathander, Male, Dwarf. (85)

STR - 17
DEX - 12
CON - 17
INT - 11
WIS - 18
CHA - 9

Fighter/Thief, Female, Halfling. (83)

STR - 15
DEX - 19
CON - 16
INT - 10
WIS - 9
CHA - 12

Undead Hunter, Female, Half-Elf. (92)

STR - 16
DEX - 18
CON - 17
INT - 11
WIS - 13
CHA - 17

Anyone else make their own teams? They don't have any dialogues, which can be a bit bland, but with a good imagination and fantasy, you're able to make your team come alive, without the dialogues popping up on your screen. It's also nice that you get all your characters from the start, so you don't have to spend time trying to reach them.

I'd love to see an update to this game with some of the quests that weren't finished wrapped up and maybe some new items like say... armor for the main character. :P

The most ridiculous stats you have rolled for a Baldur's Gate character?

$
0
0
I remember my first full play through of Baldurs's Gate after three attempts I rolled some amazing stats for a Paladin. Which is easier to do on a Paladin because you always get the class requirement minimum ie you will have a min Charisma 17, but despite that I managed:

Strength: 18/00
Dexterity: 18
Constitution: 18
Intelligence: 11
Wisdom: 16
Charisma: 18

Which in turn meant that thanks to all the stat boosting tomes I imported into BGII looking like this:

Strength: 19
Dexterity: 19
Constitution: 19
Intelligence: 12
Wisdom: 18 (There were two wisdom boosting tomes if you know where to look!)
Charisma: 19

Question is what are the best stats you've managed to roll, and how long did it take you? I'd also be curious to know what are the crappiest stats anyone has managed to finish the game on?

You know what's always bothered me about Baldur's Gate?

Inspired by a similarly named and styled thread https://forums.beamdog.com/discussion/30774/you-know-youre-playing-too-much-baldurs-gate-when I decided to make this thread for us to gripe about our minor issues with the Baldur's Gate games (and Icewind Dale too, I suppose). This minor quirk has always seriously irked me.

So, to start it all off...

You know what's always bothered me about Baldur's Gate?

1. How every character is ambidextrous. Everyone's right handed until you give them a bow. Then suddenly they're perfectly ambidextrous.

BG2 Solo SCS Spell Guide

Introduction

Spell guides: there are dozens already out there and while everybody's opinions differ, we all know that Magic Missile, Mirror Image, Skull Trap, Stoneskin, Breach, Protection From Magical Weapons, Project Image, Abi-Dalzim's Horrid Wilting and Time Stop are all you need, right?

Trouble is that nearly all the spell guides already written are for the vanilla game, where indeed a handful of powerful spells are all you need to conquer everything. See a mage? Breach him. Melee opponents getting to you? Stoneskin. Want to kill a bunch of enemies? Horrid Wilting. And so on.

When I first started playing with SCS I was amazed at the additional complexity of the AI. In particular the improved mages were remarkable. In the vanilla game I had never blinked at seeing a Yuan-ti mage. Now with SCS they were an utter nightmare, they hung around for ages, dispelled all my protections, and peppered me with Magic Missiles. The game had changed and the old tricks no longer worked.

At first I had no idea how to get through layers of magical defences. Then I read through the spell descriptions and gradually began to work it out. So I need a Secret Word to get rid of that. But first a Spell Thrust to remove this. And only then can I Breach. Do I have a Secret Word and Spell Thrust? Of course not. Who in the vanilla game even looked at those spells, let alone memorise them?

For the last few years I have exclusively played solo no reload. Party games no longer appeal to me, I know the companions, I love the roleplaying, the story is great. But I've already been there and now the challenge I'm interested in is the strategic combat aspect: to fight the full array of BG2 opponents at their utmost power, with their AI enhanced by SCS. And to do it without any kind of cheesy tactics or crutches, and most importantly, with just the one life. To survive everything they can throw at me and to find a way around it and ultimately to have the Bhaalspawn prevail.

I have lost count of the number of no-reload SCS games I have played. Most fail quickly (damn you Dire Charm!); some last longer (how the %*$! am I supposed to deal with the Shade Lord's aura?!). Some get very far and then succumb to restart-itis (Okay I'm in Suldanessellar but how cool would a Berserker-Assassin with Swashbuckler AC bonus but no armour and no traps be?).

One thing I've realised from my experience is that while all kinds of classes and combinations can do well if utilised intelligently, mage types have a far better chance of survival than any other class. Moreover, the sheer complexity of arcane magic adds a huge amount to the strategic element of the game. If you're ever going to beat a no-reload SCS, you need to understand the magic system.

I decided to write this spell guide from a specific perspective. This is not a vanilla BG2 spell guide, nor is it a guide for party play. This guide is for a solo character with SCS. My explanations and ratings for each arcane spell below are based on my experience playing the game under no-reload conditions. Naturally if you play with reloads, you might not weight so heavily towards some defensive spells that I rate highly. I should also add that I play with Item Randomiser, which I think is a wonderful mod which makes every game different. As such, I have not assumed that you will have specific equipment that would otherwise be easily or quickly obtainable and which would make certain spells obsolete.

Finally I should point out that this guide is written for BG2, ie SoA and ToB. If you're playing from BG1 then bear in mind that while the majority of the guidance and explanation is still relevant, some of the nuances are different. For example spells like Sleep are very useful in BG1 and totally useless in BG2, so the rating below would not be applicable for the BG1 portion of the game.

Two Types of Casters

In the descriptions below I make reference to two types of casters: pure spellcasters and fighter-types.

Pure spellcasters are those classes that rely almost exclusively on magic. These include single class mages, sorcerers, cleric/mages and most types of thief/mages. Pure spellcasters have to use spells to cover all functions: summoning, damage, defence, debuffing, crowd control etc. They therefore require a wide ranging spellbook and do not get too much mileage from spells that enhance combat prowess.

Fighter-types are those classes for whom magic complements their weapon skills. These include the various types of fighter/mages and swashbuckler/mages. Fighter-types have slightly different requirements from their spellbook: they do not need magic for their damage output, they can use their weapons and thereby get by with fewer damaging and summoning spells. Fighter types can instead concentrate on defensive spells as well as debuffing and crowd control. They are especially interested in spells that enhance combat capability.

While the value and utility of most spells are similar for spellcasters and fighter-types, certain spells have nuances that favour one type more than the other. I have noted these where applicable. Likewise some spells get a higher rating for one type over the other.

Explanation of Ratings

I have rated each spell out of 5, with 1 the lowest rating and 5 the highest. Below is an explanation of what each rating means.

1: These spells are either useless or of such limited utility that you will hardly ever need them. You will pretty much never need to memorise these spells.

2: These spells are of limited utility. They have some value and may be helpful in certain situations or for a specialised strategy. But on the whole they are not spells you will use regularly. You will rarely need to memorise these spells.

3: These are solid spells that will serve you well. You will likely use these spells regularly and they will be an important part of your spellbook. You will memorise these spells frequently.

4: These are strong spells and will form a key part of your regular strategy. You will be using these spells in any tough encounter and will memorise them on an everyday basis.

5: These spells are essential for your character to thrive and survive. These are the spells around which you will form entire strategies. You will need to prioritise these spells and ensure you never leave base without them.

Let's talk dwarves

I made this thread in order to assure that the Little things that annoy you thread doesn't go too off topic ;)
I can't find a single portrait of a bearded female dwarf, much less the six I need to create my IWD:EE party of confusingly sexy adventurers...
But all dwarf pictures are unisex.
While we are on the subject of Dwarves, the fact that Dwarves are Scottish in D&D, what the hell is up with that? D&D Dwarves are based on Tolkien Dwarves, which in turn are based on the Dwarves from Norse mythology, so Dwarves should technically be Scandinavian if anything.

Pratchett used to play quite heavily into this, giving most of his Dwarves Scandinavian names, like Bjorn, Sven and so on.
It's my understanding that although the dwarves came from Norse mythology, their language in Middle Earth was actually Semitic. Jewish dwarves.
I do love my bearded dwarf women, but I simply use "male" dwarf images for these chracters. The idea is, that you can't tell wether a dwarf is male or female when they are fully dressed. The concept of gender doesn't exist to them, in my headcanon. Basically the same way dwarves work in the Discworld Novels. If you see an actually feminine looking dwarf (by our standarts), she is shaved because she preferes the beauty standarts of the other kith.

Though I think what @marcelluss is looking for, are bearded dwarf women that still look feminine, and yes, those portraits *are* hard to come by. I was only able to discover these two so far:

I think dwarves in games and movies tend to have Scottish accents because the intonation and rhythm of scandanavian languages sound similar to Scottish-inflected English to an English-speaking ear. It's sort of like the Swedish Chef from the Muppets, if he were speaking intelligibly in English but without changing his accent.
Dwarf uniformity bothers me. TVTropes has separate pages for "Our Elves/Dragons/Fairies/Wizards/Angels/Zombies Are DIfferent." But dwarves?

So what is the point of this topic? Simple, share your sorcerer build and some of your favorite strategies to play with the sorcerer. Cheese is welcome, and please don't skip on the mustard and pickles.

Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 3

Edwin Romance Mod, "that" fight with the Red Wizards. Spoiler.

So there was I breezing through BG2 with Edwin (love of my life), Anomen and Vicky. Pretty OP as had been playing solo for a while at the beginning and only 4 or less in the party most of the time.
Finished all quests except Firkraag in chapter 2/3, and would be going to Spellhold straight after doing that.

And then WTF?
That fight is insanely difficult, talking WK final seals levels of hurt.

And no warnings anywhere as far as I can find.

So wondering, is it just me and I can't really play this game at all?

I had to use huge amounts of buffing potions, all the various items that summon anything, (genii bottle, spider thing, golum book, staff of fire control, berserker horn ect.), Anomen and Vicky hiding in the corner calling up a graveyard and the odd pitfiend, Edwin chucking out disabling and debuffing spells like there's no tomorrow, and that was just to deal with the guards.

Funnily enough, the mages weren't so bad as the S of TM made short work of them. And the Lich , well we just kept out of his way until the end.

Took a lot of attempts to keep us all alive to the end.
Just wondering what would have happened had it occured earlier when we were at much lower levels?

As it was, for the first time ever I turned down the level to "core rules" to finish it and carry on because I kept on losing at least one NPC and I'm not keen on resurrecting.

Mind you, the rewards were worth it, not least, another pair of BOS.

The Black Hound as a possible expansion for either BG2EE or IWD2EE?

$
0
0
As we all know Beamdog was allowed to create a new expansion for BGEE, The Siege of Dragonspear. Does this mean that they can create expansions for the other enhanced editions as well? Whatever the case it got me thinking about the possibility to recreate Baldurs Gate 3: The Black Hound as an expansion for either BG2EE or as an expansion for IWD2EE if that's ever released.

The reason I say as an expansion for Icewind Dale 2EE are the following excerpts from The Black Hounds Wikipedia page:

"The game would not have been a sequel to Baldur's Gate II in terms of story but rather gameplay, however, it did continue part of story of Icewind Dale II through joinable NPC's, specifically Maralie Fiddlebender, who would have been an adult in the story. There was a hound featured in the storybook of Icewind Dale II of which Maralie narrated, according to the developers, the game would have revolved around this hound."

and:

"None of the characters from the previous Baldur's Gate games would have returned, the cast would have been completely original as well as the story, although characters from the Icewind Dale series would have returned."

also:

"The game was announced in 2002 and was said to use the D&D 3rd Edition ruleset."

Since Icewind Dale 2 makes use of the 3rd edition ruleset The Black Hound would be more suitable as an expansion to IW2EE than BG2EE. But that depends on if IWD2EE is ever released or not.

Do you think it would be possible to recreate The Black Hound and release it as an expansion to one Beamdogs many enhanced editions? Maybe hire MCA to lead the project since he is free now. He did comment on the script fo Siege of Dragonspear and he have also said that he would gladly help out with the enhanced edition of Planescape Torment if that's ever released.

So a few months ago, I ran another play (didn't finish the game of course), because I wanted to try out a Nalia romance mod (liked the mod it really felt like the character to me). So, blah blah blah, what are some changes that you all would make to her?

My thoughts,
Firstly, WHY IS SHE A MAGE/THIEF? Thief I can understand do to who she has associated herself with, but is there any logical lore reason why she knows magic in general? Plus, don't we have enough mage/thieves? Hell, don't we have enough mages? She couldn't have been some type of unique thief class? A few people wanted her changed to a sorcerer class, but even that doesn't make much sense to me... but i guess it makes more sense than a mage/thief. Hell, I would find a fighter/thief more believable then either sorcerer or mage.

(from http://www.ironworksforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2043):

There are three Flaming Fist Mercenaries on horseback out in the river bottoms. As they are riding along a small wounded gibberling runs out in front of them. It stops and turns their way.

The poor gibberling was mortally wounded (slash through the midsection by a long sword +1).

This was no oridinary gibberling, it spoke Common. The three FF mercenaries were astonished and dumbfounded when they heard this.

The gibberling said, "If you help me, I will grant you three wishes, or if you kill me a great death will come upon you."

The FF mercenaries decided to take the lawful way, and help out the poor monster. They took it to the local healer (Temple of Helm) and he gladly helped out anything in need.

After it was all cleaned up it was about to leave. Than it turned to the FF mercenaries and said, "about the three wishes, you must split them up between you; only 1 wish apiece."

The FF mercenaries were not happy; they thought they were getting 3 wishes apiece. The mercenaries were all different in one way. One of them was very fat, the other was a tall and skinny man, and the last was small and fat.

The gibberling then said, "I can see that you are not happy with my decision, but I will give you two days to decide." Once you have decided I will be waiting here for you," said the gibberling.

The mercenaries left and talked on their way back to their houses. "I dont think that is fair, we cared for that little beast and this is how it repays us," said the fat one. "Yea, I say we get the wishes and then we kill it for sport," said the tall one. The small and plump one was happy unlike the others, because he was a poor halfling with a bad house and job (being a FF mercenary must suck).

As they split up to go their seperate ways they waved good-bye. The tall one went to the left, fat one the middle, and halfling the right.

The next morning the local town crier was distributing the newspaper called the Elven Classic. The fat and halfling mercenaries met in the town square where he was. They asked for a newspaper to check out teh local problems. There on the front page, read in large letters "FLAMING FIST MERCENARY MURDERED"

At the site of this, the fat and halfling mercenaries started to panick. They went to their friends house.. and to their suprise there were many guards out in front. They went up and asked one of them what had happened here. He said that the FF mercenary inside was murdered during the night. They said his head was shoved though a wall with slash marks over his body. The FF mercenaries were scared out of their wits that they ran all the way back to the town square.

By this time it was turning darker, and the sky turned a deeper blue. "I better get home soon, incase my wife needs me," said the fat one. The halfling split up and went his own way to his house. As he entered the door he locked it and checked all the windows. He got in bed with his sword and shield by his side. He got up in the morning to find his body was still intact. He went outside with his armor on. He then went to the town square to meet his friend.

Today was the day he would get his wish he thought as he headed to meet his friend. He arrived and did not find his friend inside the town square. There the town crier was selling more newspapers. The halfling bought one and AGAIN on the front read "ANOTHER FLAMING FIST MERCENARY MURDERED".

The little halfling was shocked and at this he ran over to his friends house. There in front were some more guards. He couldn't believe that his only friends had been murdered by some beast. He than thought of the Temple of Helm and his wish. He ran over there as fast as he could. There just as he said so the gibberling had waited for them.

"Where have you been, its late in the day and I must get going," said the gibberling. "Sorry to be late, but my friends were murdered in the night," said the Halfling. "Sorry to hear that *snicker* *snicker* I hope you are ready for your THREE wishes now that your friends are gone," replied the gibberling. "Really!? I get three wishes now! Cool!," said the halfling.

At that the halfling used up two of his wishes, one on a new house and the other on the strongest shield and sword in the land. On his last wish he thought very hard, and decided to bring his friends back from the dead. At these last words the gibberling casted the spell/wish and his friends appeared in front of him. Just as he did this the gibberling said his good-byes.

He ran off down the ridge and over the hill out of sight. The halfling asked his friends if they were feeling ok. They replied in unison,"We are fine, but we still remember what killed us. In the faint shadows we could see that it was a small beast the size of a gibbe...OH MY GOD! YOU LET THE BEAST GO!!!."

At those words, they glanced the way that the gibberling had ran. "Do you think the wound that that gibberling had was from a sword of an unhappy customer?" said the Halfling. "We shall never speak of this again," they all said together. Was it the gibberling who had done the carnage? Or was it another monster still lurkering in the city limits?
