Custom NPC Portraits Masterthread [Spoilers, obviously]

$

Hello everyone :)

First of all, I am aware, that there already exist some threads about custom NPC portraits but I found them all to be rather confusing, so here is my attempt to make a proper masterthread where everyone can easily find whatever portrait(s) they want to use for their game.

This thread is under constant construction!
That's why I highly encourage you to post your own works and finds here (don't forget to source), so that I can add them to the startpost. So check back once in a while, in case there may be the perfect portrait you have always been looking for ;)

Here are a few highly subjective* "quality ensurance" guidelines:
1. The portraits shouldn't clash too much with the in-game art styles (i.e. too cartoony, cell-shading, b/w, etc.)
--- Exception: Complete packs with portraits for most/all NPC companions
2. No simple "facelifts" (meaning that they are only mildly photoshopped versions of the official ones; it would be nice though if someone else could make a different masterthread for these)
3. No obvious "facesteals" (i.e. popular actors, characters from other media, etc.) and joke portraits
4. They should resemble the original designs to at least some degree (i.e. don't just suggest any random drow portrait for Viconia)
*that means that there are almost certainly going to be folks who will disagree with my decisions on wether an image goes into the gallery or not

Depending on how this thread goes, I might sharpen or lighten the guidelines on the go.

I think it's apparent which characters got the most dedicated fans ;)

your normal order of completing bgee

Does anyone else like to pretty much complete every other accessible map before going to Nashkell? By complete I mean kill everything you want to kill and complete all the quests you're going to complete?

I've not got much bg1 experience (have a tonne of bg2 time). Wondering if this way to play bg1is normal...

Infinity Engine in Neverwinter and Waterdeep

$

Is there any possibility for beamdog to develop an entire new game with Infinity Engine (AD&D 2E rules), in Neverwinter, Waterdeep or Cormyr, for example? I'm asking this, because AD&D 2E was still in TSR era, and I don't know if Wizards of the Coast would allow a new D&D game that doesn't use D&D 5E. And also, the Baldur's Gate saga was contextualized in the classic era of Forgotten Realms, when Azoun IV was still alive. Maybe Wizards would just want to promote the actual time from the Realms...

I really would want a Infinity Engine Neverwinter or Waterdeep game, because I don't think Bioware made justice to Neverwinter in Neverwinter Nights. If this region of Faerun was worked and acclimated the same way Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale were in Infinity Engine, with grittier medieval fantasy look and better characters, it would be possible to make a game in a really great setting.

Completed Saga Runs

Seems like a fun discussion. So...how many full saga runs have you completed? I'll go first.

(1) Durak - dwarven defender
This was before my ill fated solo attempt. Runehammer in one hand, defender of easthaven in the other and the Roranarch's Horn atop his head, he was a tank like no other. He walked up and got the enemy's attention, and then Korgan (axe of the unyielding and crom faeyr) flanked. It worked quite well.

I envisioned him attaining godhood and becoming a (very) minor dwarven deity, with the portfolio of being a god for dwarves raised by non-dwarves who still try to stick to their heritage.

(2) Kadrin - dwarven fighter/thief
Carsomyr when fighting, Yamato for backstabbing, wearing white dragon scale armor and has the headband of the devout on his head. Backstabbing with a guaranteed max damage at 25 strength? Followed up by 10 whirlwind attacks with Carsomyr? He was a whirlwind of destruction. And the traps...oh the traps.

I envisioned him retiring to the Deepstone Clanhold where he would spend the rest of his days, protecting it from any future attack. And experimenting with the unique ore found there to make truly deadly traps for any unwanted guests.

(3) Lother - Human Fighter/Shadowdancer
Dual classed him at lvl 13 so he would have max backstabbery. Belm in his offhand, spectral brand in his main. Quite a force to be reckoned with.

I envisioned him taking godhood and changing his name to Bhaal, becoming what his father once was.

(4) Aethandir- Elven Fighter/Mage
Not my favorite run, too much micro managing. But a surprisingly good tank. Even though there were better options out there, he kept Aslyferund, the best elven chain in the world, because it just looked that damned good. A weird bug meant that I couldn't actually get out of the pocket plane after beating the last trial, but because there was nothing I could do about it I still count the run complete.

I envisioned him returning to Suldanessar after the saga.

(5) Brynhild - Human Inquisitor
Damn those stats. I mean...damn. S20 D18 C20 I14 W18 Cha21. That was some good rolling. Purifier in one hand, Hindo's Doom in the other (for the magic resistance), she did fairly well for herself. Kinda redundant to have her and Keldorn, but this was the holy warrior run.

She ran away with Anomen as per their epilogue.

(6) Weilan - Human Monk
More crazy stats. When a monk has S25, hits for max damage (ie: 43 damage per hit) and has 10 attacks per round? Combine that with -16 THACO and -19AC, and you have something completely broken. Combine that with 100% magic resistance and enemies just cry. Then again, beating BG1 with a monk charname and with Raasad in the same party...that was so damned painful. So I feel like I earned that power spike at the end.

She took godhood, for one reason only: She feared getting old and withering away. A strange thought that hit me when making that final choice, but I ran with it.

So 6 completed saga runs thus far. I've got a ranger/cleric currently in the underdark who might well join their number eventually, and I'm toying with a fighter/druid run which has just started in BG1.

And this isn't counting how I beat the saga twice in my youth, before EE. Once as a paladin and another with a dwarven berserker.

Anyone else want to share how obsessed they are with this game?

Come share your odd gaming habits! What do you refuse to do in BG? What wierd ideas do you love?

It seems like a lot of people like to make their games more "realistic" or more "awesome!" by creating their own rules or play-styles. Many people refuse to use certain tactics, or like to adopt some odd, unorthodox techniques for roleplaying reasons. Many others like to sacrifice POWER! for STYLE . Other times people do things or refuse to do things because it would be out of character (like refuse to case Animate Dead with cute little Aerie like @Dragonspear ). Others, like @belgarathmth don't enjoy using bags of holding or switching/carrying copious amounts of items because they think it breaks immersion.

So I thought I'd start a thread where everyone can share their oddities! A chance to share your ideas and eccentricities.

Okay, I'll start.

I never backstab with quarterstaves, because I think sneaking around then poking someone looks lame!

During recent months we had several times when forumites, even unintentionally from their part, gave spoilers about the content of games, movies and books in places without any warnings. And I don't talk about only the IE games. These spoilers severely ruined the experience for those people who still hadn't discovered the appropriate things themselves.

It's hard to describe one's feeling when he or she is looking forward to a game, a movie, a book, and then suddenly reads the key detail on the forum because no warnings came.

When you post something on the forum, check to things:

1) whether the thread title, or even the sub-forum title has a "Spoilers!" warning in it

2) whether the thing you're going to post about is a key spoiler about anything

For example, https://forums.beamdog.com/discussion/25272/baldurs-gate-meme-thread-ii-enhanced-edition-careful-everyone-spoilers#latest has a "Spoilers!" warning in the title, but this warning comes only for things related to BG, - so if you want to post a spoiler about anything not BG-related, put a spoiler tag into your post.

Another example. https://forums.beamdog.com/categories/general has a "Spoilers!" warning in the name of the subforum. So if you're a new player, don't read the discussions there, or create a discussion of your own there, with a note of not getting a spoiler, or read things there very cautiously.

Posting in any discussion in the off-topic section of the forum about other games/movies/TV-shows should fall under the same rules. Don't forget that not everyone, even if they're interested in the same game/movie or book, knows as much as you.

Don't forget that one of the Forum rules is "Don't spoil the fun".

There are measures everyone can take to avoid spoiling things for those who haven't experienced the game (and the same can be said about other things) yet. If you're going to ruin the plot, announce it beforehand.

One of the great things about any release is that it's exposing a lot of new people to what the release has to offer. That great thing is ruined, and not in a small way, when elements of the plot and character stories are announced or bandied about with no care for who's listening. So the short version is, if you're going to discuss the plot or anything else that might "spoil the fun" for somebody, wrap the content in spoiler tags. Spoiler tags look like this (without a space between [ and spoiler):

[ spoiler]This is a spoiler[/ spoiler]

[ spoiler=you can announce things that are put into a spoiler] This is a spoiler[/ spoiler]

Example:
This is how it looks like.

This is a spoiler
Adalon actually turned your party into drow, instead of just making you look like drow?

You could have:
Their magic resistance.
Their special abilities.
Their alignment even, so that you cast different spells as a cleric, summoned different demons with aTweaks installed.
And, of course, infravision.

So its 2am and I'm bored, its time for me to annoy you all.

Competitors:
Dorn, the half orc blackguad

And

Sarevok the bhaalspawn

Dorn and Sarevok meats on the battlefield, which will walk away carrying the others head?

Rules...
1. This isn't a discussion of min/maxing stats, or manipulating things that the player can ultimately change (ex. Dueling Sarevok into a mage to give him a advantage). All examples must be based on lore and feats that the character has accomplished (novels and game, this is kind of unfair for one but sue me.)

2. No manipulating items, no giving them items that they don't START with, no no Carsomyr for Dorn, if he could wield it.

Now it's time for a brute battle, begin!!!!

I don't know about you guys, but becoming the God of Murder for the xyz-th time is reaaally boring. So this kind of got me thinking, tinkering and then my headcanon workshop was running again at full speed: "What kind of deity would *I* become when ascending after the Throne of Bhaal?"

This thread is just for giggles. So feel free to let your silly imaginations roam around. ;)

In my case, it would probably be something like this:
Kamigoroshi
(The Thermae Dweller, Hot Springs Digger, He Who Sleeps In The Tub)
Lesser Power of the Quasi-Elemental Plane of Steam, True Neutral

PORTFOLIO: Baths, hot springs, saunas, purification through cleansing
ALIASES: None
DOMAIN NAME: Quasi-Elemental Plane of Steam / The Floating Rubber Duck
SUPERIOR: Istishia
ALIES: Leira, Eldath, Istishia
FOES: Ilmater, Loviatar, Talona
SYMBOL: A bathtub, or geyser.
HOLY ANIMAL: Geyser Dragon
WOR. ALIGN.: Any

The battle between the numerous spawns of Bhaal had left him utterly exhausted. Much blood, dirt and sweat was still clinging on his body. However, to his dismay the civilization level of Faerûn had yet to reach the knowledge of creating public bathing facilities. Thus, the first thing Kamigoroshi (Kah-MEE-gho-RO-shee) did after ascending to godhood was planewalking to the Quasi-Elemental Plane of Steam and digging up a giant and steaming hot spring. He then soaked in the pleasant water for untold years. By the time Kamigoroshi realized it, Bhaal's portfolio of "Murder" has been washed away and was replaced with "Baths".

Dogma:
At its heart, the Kamigoroshian faith believes that every city, town, settlement and household should have baths and cold drinks. Hot water and steam will wash away stress, ease diseases, allay pain, and purifies the mind. All sects of the Kamigoroshian faith tend to avoid personal combat and direct confrontations in public bathing areas. That is not to say that the faith ignores ill-mannered events going on around them in such facilities. But rather that they work quietly along less-obvious paths to accomplish their goals (such as hardening the comfy chairs of non-believers). Members of the faith are also to follow the path of rinsing their bodies from filth before entering the bathing water.

Day-to-Day Activities:
Keeping bathrooms pure and clean is one major goal of the church, and this responsible long-term goal has made the Kamigoroshians one of the more easily accepted elemental "cults" to visit. Other activities include of creating bathing toys, mixing shampoo, harvesting bathing salt and the invention of waterproof books.

Holy Days / Important Ceremonies:
Each moring for a follower of the Thermae Dweller begins with a quiet, hot bath and tea. Each night ends the same way. There are no fixed holy days within the Kamigoroshian faith, however the church sponsors various bathing festivals in Summer and sauna festivals in Winter.

Priestly Vestments:
Priests of Kamigoroshi dress in turquise-and-violet bathrobes with hot springs symbol decorations for ceremonial occasions.

Adventuring Garb:
Adventuring priests are free to wear whatever clothes they deem appropiate. Though they have at least one swimsuit ready in their backpack for taking a quick dip on the go.

Prediction: Beamdog and the end of the Infinity Engine

$
0
0
There will likely be only one infinity engine game produced after Siege of Dragonspear. Below are the documented reasons for each case.

1. Adventure Z:

We know from the devs that Beamdog's Adventure Z is up next and that it will be a departure from previous games and that it will involve sharks somehow.

Given the description I highly doubt that this will be an infinity engine game. An underwater D&D adventure game would be new and unprecedented, but probably too radical a departure from what the infinity engine has delivered before.

Given Trent Oster's bad experience with Nintendo, my first guess is that this adventure z game involving sharks is more likely a mobile phone game than a console game. PC/Mac/Linux possible if the design makes sense for it.

Conclusion: Adventure Z = not infinity engine

2. Baldur's Gate 3 and other Infinity Engine Intellectual Properties:

The siegeofdragonspear.com FAQ states:

Q: Why didn't you make this expansion in a new engine instead of the Infinity Engine?
We wanted to create a cohesive, old-school gaming experience that meshes with the parent games, and we wanted to bring people the experiences that only the Infinity Engine offers.

The devs are already defending their engine choice before the game is even released. This is an indication that the devs have long been thinking about a new game engine and are only using the infinity engine for siege of dragonspear for ease of use and continuity's sake.

The faq mentions that BG:SoD is not Baldur's Gate 3 and other interviews confirm Beamdog's interest in making BG3. Wizards of the Coast has incentives to license games in in its current edition:5e The infinity engine was built for 2e and contains that ruleset's baggage. Why garner additional interest for a brand new game in a deprecated ruleset?

Conclusion: Adventure Z = not infinity engine, Baldur's Gate 3 = not infinity engine, Other IP = not infinity engine

3. Icewind Dale II Enhanced Edition:

Trent Oster said:

"The move to 3rd Edition rules would invalidate all the character classes and require a pretty thorough rework of the entire game to bring in the features from our Infinity Plus Engine. At minimum, nightmares abound."

You can clearly see Trent's thoughts as a manager here. Why go through a lot of effort to work on brand new enhancements to an engine that can only benefit one game? That's time and money that doesn't have as much return on a Baldur's Gate compatible game. Why invest into a likely nightmare?

Icewind Dale II did not have as many sales as Icewind Dale. Take a look at these recent Amazon.com prices of the original games. Icewind Dale is more popular than Icewind Dale II.
image
Why invest in a nightmare that will catch fewer sales?

The alternative would be to convert IWD2 to 2e, but that would anger people who preferred the 3e ruleset of IWD2. And go against Beamdog's current practice of minimal changes to games.

Conclusion: Adventure Z = not infinity engine, Baldur's Gate 3 = not infinity engine, Other IP = not infinity engine, Icewind Dale 2 Enhanced Edition = not happening

4. Planescape Torment: Enhanced Edition:

Amber Scott said:
It's pretty much a maybe. A lot of people in the office (including me) would LOVE to a Planescape update. It's one of my favorite games of all time. Trent has said "we'd like to, there are issues to work out first but we're interested" (I paraphrase). So nothing is officially in the works but maybe, someday, hopefully.
The original Planescape Torment was not a great seller despite having a cult following. Much of the problems that affect Icewind Dale 2 affect Planescape Torment even more. Outdated cutscenes, ugly brown and gray backgrounds, completely different icons: spells, items, paperdolls,

Torment has different engine features such as running which would need to be handled.

In order to bring the Baldur's Gate Enhancements, the engine would need to be converted to the BGEE one, but Torment was designed for single player and it shows. Having multiple Nameless ones show up at the beginning of the story would be weird story-wise. Having fully alive Multiplayer companions in the starting area wouldn't make sense in the story and would diminish the nameless one. A Kensai Half-Orc would trounce the Nameless One's combat abilty and a Sorceror at the beginning would be insulting towards the Nameless One's inability to become a Mage immediately and instead requiring several tasks first.

Unlike in BGEE, where the protagonist starts out as any class and race of choice and with Class Kits, Barbarian, Sorceror, Monk, and Half-Orc from Throne of Bhaal being available in BG1 for a long time through BGTuTu and Baldur's Gate Trilogy mods, the same cannot be said for Torment: To add any other classes requires a rewriting of the game. To add any kits requires a rewriting of the game.
The Planescape setting was discontinued upon the introduction of 3rd edition over 15 years ago. Wizards of the coast has little incentive to generate interest in a setting that isn't being supported. Even though Baldur's Gate is 2E, Forgotten Realms still maintains great popularity and is still producing game manuals and novels.

The Torment Trademark is owned by the producer's of the spiritual successor to Planescape Torment, Torment: Tides of Numenera

"The applications were both filed by Roxy Friday LLC, a company previously linked to InXile Entertainment founder Brian Fargo, who also happened to be the head of Interplay during the development of Meantime and, presumably, at least some of Van Buren. Roxy Friday is also the company that filed for a Torment trademark in 2012, prior to the announcement of Torment: Tides of Numenera."

InExile may not want anything to spoil Torment: Tides of Numenera's release later this year or in coming years. After great sales, PIllars of Eternity set out to make an expansion. Torment; TIdes of Numenera would likely want to make an expansion if sales turn out good. Business-wise, why would they want a spoiler on the sales for their expansion either?

It may be a legal issue to sell an Enhanced Edition of Torment while another company owns it's copywrite. Even if not, there's still the chance of being sued anyway. The copywrite owners may demand a fee over use of the Torment name for a Planescape Torment: Enhanced Edition

Why invest in a game that will have fewer features than Baldur's Gate & Icewind Dale, will require a lot of rework to be made viable, has more potential legal issues and fees associated with it, and had a bad sales record with the original game?

Conclusion: Adventure Z = not infinity engine, Baldur's Gate 3 = not infinity engine, Other IP = not infinity engine, Icewind Dale 2 Enhanced Edition = not happening, Planescape Torment Enhanced Edition = not happening

5. Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition Trilogy

Trent Oster Stated:

"It all comes down to the terms of the business deal. We are on the hook for two products, BG:EE and BG2:EE. So for now, we make two products. Down the road we'll likely try to convince everyone to do a all in one version. Can't see this happening for a while though. With Atari's bankruptcy, all new ideas are on hold until it shakes out.

-Trent "

Phil Daigle Stated:
2. Any chance in the future or an Enhanced Edition Trilogy game that combines bgee, bgSoD, and bg2ee in one game?

Yes, we would love to do that. Right now there are certain technical limitations for iOS and Android that don't allow for such a colossal game, but eventually that will change. If all else fails it could come exclusively to desktop.

We don't have a specific time frame to do build that, but it's something we've held in mind as a long-term goal since 2012. If it makes sense and we can do it, we will.
A game combining all the Bhaalspawn Saga into one game is something that the developers have repeatedly supported doing. Integration into one game is something that has long been proven with the Baldur's Gate Trilogy mod. BGEE and BG2EE both use the same engine with the same feature set, so integration is very viable.

A chance to get Interplay to allow changes to existing content would finally mean that players can get get the feature they've wanted for years: Keep your party from BG1 through the entire Bhaalspawn Saga and alter the start of BG2, integrated BG1 NPC project mod, integrated Ascension mod as well as other Enhancements such as 10 person parties, easy moddability for creating new classes, dual classes, and multiclasses, brand new massive quests, new areas, and more!

Even if Interplay never reneges on its insistence to no changes to existing content, Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition Trilogy will still likely be made, new quests and areas not within BGEE, BGSoD, or BG2EE would give more reason to buy the combined game as would the integration of the new SoD NPCs into BG2EE. Engine features such as 10 person parties, moddable more single, dual, and multiclasses, subraces, and more could be added.

The main obstacles to an official Enhanced Edition Trilogy game would be money and time. If Siege of Dragonspear sells well, it paves the way for an eventual Enhanced Edition Trilogy game. Timewise and moneywise, it would make sense to wait some years after the release of Siege of Dragonspear to release this game after sales have died down somewhat.

6. Prediction:
Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition Trilogy will be released some years after a successful Siege of Dragonspear game release. After that, there will never be another Infinity Engine game commercially produced.

How does Sun Soulray work?

$

I cannot for the life of me figure out how the monk ability Sun Soulray works. What is the shape / area of effect of this ability? It seems utterly random. I can have Rasheed use it on an enemy that is surrounded by 3 or 4 enemies and it will only just hit 1 ... other times it hits every single evemy on the screen, plus eveyr single party member that's behind Rasheed (even my archers!).

Is it a 30 ft blast? It doesnt seem like it because sometimes it hits allies that are 20 feet behind him and sometimes it doesnt.. sometimes it hits 1 enemy in a cluster of enemies, other times it hits all of them.

I'm just trying to figure out how to use this stupid ability without frying my party members, but I cant do it without understand the shape / area this ability has. At least fireball tells me it has a 30ft radius so I know how to cast it and avoid hitting my friends... but there's no detailed description for this ability and even after using it a dozen times I can only deduce the shape and area of the attack are utterly random.

Top 5 NPCs, and bottom 5 NPCs! best party combos

When I first played BG back in the beginning of the century, I was primarily concerned with getting the strongest party together to kick the most butt.
This time through, I want to spend more time with as many NPCs as deserve it.

Who are your fav 5 NPCs to travel with, and who are your least fav 5?

Their effectiveness in game matters, but I am more concerned with who had a good quest, has good interparty dialogue, and who you look forward to traveling with again. I also want to know who you think the coolest party combos are.

(you can certainly have more than a top or bottom 5, I am just throwing out a number to get the ball rolling.)

I am familiar with CRPG mechanics enough to be confident I can succeed without concerns for party strength, and I know some of you on here know every little bit about this game, so this is a good opportunity for you to school some of us on some hidden gems in this game.

The latest version of IOS disables the use of iFunBox to transfer savegames to and from your Ipad. the latest IOS pretty much renders iFunBox useless, it doesn't allow iFunBox to interact with the subfolders of virtually any app. Its an issue specific to IOS 8.3 - iFunBox has come with a minor patch that allows CERTAIN apps to interact with iFunBox (things like VLC player, but also games like Star Wars - Knights of the Old Republic). However, none of the BG-style games are on that list - it has something to do with how the app interacts with IOS. Furthermore, neither IOS 8.2 nor 8.3 are jailbreakable.

If you've upgraded, here is a very useful guide to downgrade to IOS 8.2

Not sure if I should post this to the individual game folders or here - its applicable to BG, BG2 and IWD. I'd say the best possible suggestion would be to email the developers of the games to issue an update that mods the games to have "Itunes File Sharing" enabled. I'm not sure if thats the only working fix - somehow Star Wars - KOTOR, still allows the transfer of saved file. Here's a post detailing the issue and the fix.

Using EEKeeper to Kit Multiclass Characters

I apologize if this has been definitively established, but after a bit of searching around the forums, I just wanted clarification on the process of putting a kit on a multiclass character. Is the simple fix to lower a character's level to 0, change the class to a specific kit, and then level up? If someone could provide a step-by-step explanation, that would be incredibly helpful.

Why was this of all things changed? Am I missing something because I don't see the need for this particular change. It was much better as a skull imo.
