Average height of the races

Hello all,

Something I would like to know is if there's an official average height for each race and sub-race for FR. I've read about the races etc on the FR wiki, but not sure if it's all correct. I've also seen a couple of pictures depicting different races standing next to eachother but they seem off, as far as I've read in replies to them.

I would like to see, if one exist, a picture like this but with all the races or one for each race and its sub-races. Is there an official one with all the canon races and there respective heights?
http://www.3dnews.ru/documents/3708/elf_rase.jpg

I'm mostly interrested in the shorty races; halflings, gnomes and dwarves in respect to humans.

I have no experience from PnP, thus I've not read any handbooks.

(I did a forum search but couldn't find a thread with this topic)

Cheers,
//Skat.

BG1 NPC personas vs. BG2 NPC personalities

One of the most prevalent (and valid) complaints when comparing BG1 and BG2 NPCs is that the BG1 NPCs have substantially less dialogue and interactions than the BG2 ones. While this is certainly accurate, I don't agree that this is entirely a drawback for the BG1 NPCs.

While the BG2 NPCs are more talkative, I've always felt that the BG1 NPCs projected the more interesting and memorable personas - i.e: Kivan as the quiet, no-nonsense tough guy (picture Dirty Harry with a bow instead of a magnum), Shar-Teel as a defiant, man-hating ultra-feminist, Eldoth as a charming scoundrel, Ajantis as a youthful, overzealous do-gooder, Safana as a conniving seductress, etc. By contrast, many of the BG2 NPCs, despite talking a lot more, often seem either forgettably bland (i.e: Keldorn, Mazzy, Cernd, Valygar), or just annoying (Anomen).

I'll admit that there are definitely times when playing BG1 that I wish the NPCs would interact more than they do. At the same time though, I also appreciate that the "less is more" approach of BG1 interactions allows you to form your own interpretations of the characters. For example, although not explicitly scripted, I've always imagined that there was a burgeoning romance developing between Kivan and Branwen, based on the obvious admiration that they show for each other (which is especially significant since Kivan never seems to have anything nice to say about anything else).

I also find that in many cases, the more a BG2 NPCs talks, the less likable or interesting they actually become. For example, the interactions between Mazzy and Valygar, while admittedly humorous, also make Valygar look like a lifeless wuss and Mazzy like a bit of a naive snob - which is not how I would picture either character otherwise. In BG1, Viconia presented to me as a sympathetic, persecuted character, and I was only too happy to accept her into my party and keep her under my protection. While she initially presents the same way in BG2, as soon as you rescue her, she starts berating Aerie (and also has some unkind remarks about Imoen IIRC), so much so that I just can't bring myself to accept her into my party (at least, not as long as Aerie is still in it). Likewise, Anomen is just such a flat out jerk to other party members that I often come to wonder whether I should keep him in, and whether I really should care whether he ever becomes a knight (heck, for the sake of the Order, I should probably not want him in it, LOL).

As I'm currently playing BG2 with BG1 NPCs imported through multiplayer, I currently have a party that is a mix of BG1 and BG2 NPCs, and I've been able to observe the differences side-by-side. While the interactions between the BG2 NPCs can make the game seem more spontaneous, I just can't bring myself to feel bonded to the BG2 NPCs the way that I am to the BG1 ones. For example, I recently swapped out Branwen for Anomen, but after playing with him for a while, I quickly felt so disinterested in him (and the game in general) that I revisited the save from prior to the swap and restarted playing without him.

So, if anyone out there has had the patience to read through this post, do you share any similar feelings?

This might not be your favorite character--just the one you find most interesting, compelling, developed, or in some other way appealing.

So
for the longest time I've been in love with the dark magicks of Necromancy. I mean, I still am in love with it. Though, I'm finding myself more and more attracted to Bards and support classes. I'm actually thinking of making the Bard my main class over the Necromancer. Like

In Baldur's Gate:EE on my iPhone I'm playing a Blade Bard that only learns Necromancy spells and am super enjoying it. More-so than my Cleric or Wizard Necromancers. In NWN2 the Bard is the most fun I've ever had with a class.

If I can combine Necromancy and the Bard style I will like with the Dirgesinger prestige class in 3.5 or the Dirge Bard archetype in Pathfinder. In 5e I think loremaster Bards can pick up animate dead so I'm covered there.

Should I go through with this conversion to maining Bards in games from now then? I adore their versatility and support playstyle.

Can Baldur's Gate be used to teach English and Math skills?

I've always been a die hard fan of the BG Franchise - it's one of the few games that I love as much as an adult as I did as a kid (maybe even more so). I've always felt that playing BG as a kid gave me a bit of a "leg-up" when it came to reading and later in life BG even made it easier for me to understand Shakespeare. Maybe if I had been paying more attention, it could have helped me with my Math skills too!

In the past few years, I've begun working as a teacher using video games - its an emerging movement called Digital Game-Based Learning (in the US). I haven't had the chance to use BG with students yet, because I have not yet had the opportunity to work with anything other than elementary age students. However, I have begun writing reviews of games from an educational viewpoint for Edu-Gaming.com - and Baldur's Gate was a top priority for me.

Check out my review and let me know your thoughts in the comments below: https://edu-gaming.com/reviews/27-rpg/315-baldur-s-gate

Boxed-product wise, I don't see retail working well. I see the demand as not uniform and hard to meet with a blanket retail approach.

I just started vanilla BG2, and wanted to make a character. I tend to play with the first 80+ roll for my PC. But this one I got upon the very first roll (after stats re-assignment).

STR 18/99
DEX 17
CON 19
INT 14
WIS 10
CHA14

Total 92 with a 18/99. Jesus.

Why do Half-Orcs have 19 str?

Half-Orc high str rating confuses me, yes your average half-orc should be stronger than your average human, but isn't 19 str a bit excessive?

19 str is Hillgiant str right? or at least the the average Hillgiant str.

For a half-orc to be able to match str with a 5m tall 650kg monster seems kind of implausible.

Does anybody know the standard str of a Orc?

I have a decision to make and I am not sure what would be the best course of action. Here is the story: I want to have my mother play BG 1&2 from start to finish. After many failed attempts to finish vBG1 since its release way back when she has finally finished her first vBG1 run about 2 years ago. I started her on vBG2 but she barely got out of Chateau Irenicus before I things got messy. BG2:EE got released and I kinda stopped getting together with her to watch her play (I think she prefers to play with me watching her). So now I figured I should get her to play BG again and see if she can finish a run finally. The problem is that I am not sure how to go about doing this. She has not played BG1:EE ever and some of the things in BG2:EE, especially the new characters, may not make complete sense to her. I mean, I would kinda like her to have a background perspective on what the characters were like in BG1:EE. That said I would much rather her play BG2:EE than vBG2. So these are some of my options as I see it:

*Make her play BG1:EE before doing BG2:EE (I don't think she wants to go through BG1 again, at least not with the same character.)

*Just move her on to BG2:EE with the closest approximation to her character I can make (I would have to explain the new NPCs as she meets them I guess).

Some additional information: She likes paladins, a lot. I am sure she would want to play BG2 as a paladin (I would recommend inquisitor to her and she will likely take it). I want her to use Keldorn at some point because, knowing her, she would just love everything about him (this ties in with her paladin fixation). I wouldn't want her to use Keldorn if she is a paladin, but we will see what happens with that I guess. Maybe I can convince her to play again from start to finish eventually as something else and she can take Keldorn then.

So how does everyone think I should go about doing this?

Protection from Evil

I apologize if I'm "double posting" or whatever folks call it and get angry about. I tried searching but didn't really find the answer I was looking for. In BGEE and BG2EE, do the Protection from Evil spells give a +2 bonus to saving throws? I've noticed that the spell description does not mention this, but I know that this bonus was originally given before.

So, between our two shortest races, which is the most cute? I like gnomes more due to their connection to Fey (and therefore canonly being able to have crazy hair colors).

F/T main, options for a good/neutral 4 char party?

$

Of course I suffer from always starting a new character before actually finishing (furthest so far is with Illusionist/T , levs 5/6.) Now, I've rolled up a half orc F/T and I'd like to travel with a smaller party, preferably 4 person, but I don't want to bring along anyone evil.

Thoughts on decent party? (I also don't want to have wait 'too long' to acquire the team.) It seems like the biggest difficulty is finding a decent mage. Dynaheir seems like the main choice, but she requires Minsc unless I get him killed. Some options I was considering...

Branwen
Minsc - Can he tank well enough, in a 4 person group?
Dynaheir

Branwen
Garrick (mage/wand) - Would he be able to work as enough 'mage-like' support?
Ajantis - Tank?

Other thoughts?

Kitties aside, it's time for rules. Let me see, here...

Keep It Clean-ish: Let's keep this thread PG-13.
-I'm not saying "Let's make jokes that are appropriate for Leave It To Beaver!", just avoid the profanity and sexual content.
Don't Spoil The Fun!: As far as spoilers go, well, it'd be mighty fine if you could put spoiler tags ( [ spoiler ] [ /spoiler ] , without the spaces) around such things, so people new to this game in need of a quick giggle don't get spoiled like I did on Wikipedia in 2006. :( Now I regard spoilers twice as much.
Play Nice: Like Alora says, "Careful, everyone, play nice!". This is a "space" for us to have fun. Let's play nice, and not bait or antagonize (troll) others.
Something Is Wrong, Here...: SCARY_WIZARD thinks you should contact some moderators if a rule appears to have been broken. We have, to my knowledge, @Dee (formerly Aosaw, if you've been absent for a while; the sentientest wombat I ever read things from!), @mInevese, @Nathan, @Coriander, @LadyRhian, @Cuv, @CamDawg (THEY MAKE COOL THINGS), @Jalily, @Metalloman, or any of the other Staff members (whose text happens to be on a blue or grey background).
PLEASE, let us not discuss what caused the other thread to be locked, lest this one get locked, as well, and future meme threads be prohibited!

Here's how to post an image, if you're like me and know HTML and vB Code/UBB Code, but are derpy.
Copy this: image, and paste it, replacing "LINKGOESHERE" with the URL of the image you want to post. Attaching is cool, too, but you might be like me and want to just link.
Here's some stuff on formatting your posts: forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/161/how-to-format-your-posts/p1
I don't do that, but I'm not exactly the best example, am I.

No, this thread is not about your local postal service or nautic traveling, it's about the non-canonical relationships between all those colourful characters that roam the Swoardcoast and beyond.

- What are your favourite ships?
- Are there any ships you hate?
- What are your headcanons on them?
- Why do you ship them?
- Anything else on the subject?

Feel free to share any fanart and fics of your ships here as well. (Don't forget to give proper credit.)
PS: Try not to name Charname X ???, that's boring.

Happy ship wars >:D

What alt portraits do you use for NPCs?

$

I've always loved the style of the original BG1 NPC portraits - they're far and away my favorite of any RPG, including the other IE games. However, I won't pretend that they're entirely perfect, either. So for me, the ideal NPC portrait replacement is one that stays fundamentally true to the original, but makes a few tweaks/"upgrades."

For example, I don't like that a number of the original portraits are cluttered with sparkle/glow effects that obscure the character itself. So I use this alt portrait for Kagain, which removes those effects so that you can clearly see his face and helmet (the latter of which looks quite nice).
image

In the same vein, I also use this "cleaned up" portrait for Khalid.
image

I love this portrait of Kivan, which gives his face a more chiseled, "tough guy" look, more befitting his "Dirty Harry"-esque persona and voice set, with a look of determination/vengeance in his eyes.
image

This is what Viconia was always meant to look like IMO - her skin tone is more appropriate for a drow than in either of her original BG portraits, and a red gleam in her eyes hints at her evil essence. I love the shimmering armor style too, which reminds you that she is indeed a cleric (unlike her BG2 portrait, which makes her look like a hooded mage).
image

I've always gotten the impression that Branwen was intended to be attractive - i.e.: the carnival master describes her as a "warrior maiden," and both Coran and Ajantis will openly marvel at her beauty - but her original portrait is rather plain IMO. This portrait is closer to how the game portrays her IMO.
image

This portrait of Safana trims away the folds of flesh under her chin to give a (more appropriately IMO) younger, leaner look.
image

In some cases, a bit more "overhauling" is required for portraits that, regardless of their inherent quality, just don't suit the character. This was never more apparent in the case of Coran, whose original portrait portrays him as an ancestor of the Joker rather than a debonair elf. This portrait is much closer to how he's portrayed in the game IMO.
image

Although I do love Imoen's portrait, like many people, I also agree that it looks too old/mature for her character. This is an ideal alt portrait for me, which gives her a younger, leaner look, while still retaining her distinctive cheekbones and smirk.
image

I use this portrait for Faldorn, which is better suited to her quiet, enigmatic demeanor than the snarling original IMO.
image

In one of the rare instances in which I've replaced an NPC's portrait with something entirely different, I use this portrait for Neera. I feel that the short, "punky" hairstyle better captures her spunky personality, and the scar on her face is suggestive of the many travels and hardships that she's had to endure before meeting you (or perhaps, a mishap caused by one of her wild surges).
image

Thoughts? What are some examples of alt portraits that you folks use?
