Mage dueled to Figher or Thief (Early)

Hi all

Just wondered if anyone had played Baldur's Gate with a mage that they then dueled to a figher or theif early on (like level 2). This would give you access to some first level spells and (i believe) the ability to use all mage only items while becoming a decent fighter. Anyone tried this? See any issues with it?

What is Conan's class and stats (the Howard/Busiek et al. character)?

... and before you can say "Barbarian. Duh!", consider all this:

- He 'duals' into 'Thief' early in his career.
- Later gains 'prestige classes' as a... err... 'Champion' [leadership bonuses, though not healing spells, as well as some mystical immunities, which probably approximates a non-spell casting Paladin].
- He is not a typical 'good-guy' but his word is his bond (though he is not bound by laws of the land); he attempts to protect those that ask for it (especially 'damsels', but also those linked by a battle-bond)
- He is superbly intelligent in the tactics & tricks that he employs; also has the wisdom to discern his path
- He successfully battles Wizards
- His minds is impervious when in 'rage' (e.g. 'God in the Bowl' etc.)

I'd say, he should be:

Berserker 6 / Thief 5 / Pirate 4 [Skald-like thief kit] / 'Champion' 10 [imaginary paladin kit]
Neutral Good
18-75/16/18/14/14/17
(e.g. his dex is high, but not as high as, say Janissa)

with a scattering of special abilities corresponding mental save bonuses etc.

Anyone else wanna give a shot at this?

So I'm wanting to romance Jaheria and try a different party (After 15 years I find that I get a little bored with the standard approach to things, and yet have never romanced Jaheria!) with the following underused (by me) characters:

Valygar
Mazzy
Jahera (romance) - will edit to NG
Neera (if she drives me crazy then I'll Nalia instead)

And I'm thinking Cernd because he's also underused (I may shadowkeeper him to Avenger since werewolf is bugged) This obviously leaves me thief-less, tankless, cleric-less.

For the sake of the party I'm wanting to be good, for romance need to be male human or half-elf and it needs to be something fluffy.

Fighter-cleric of Lathander?

Make my own NG Avenger (since most of the party is nature themed in some form) and add/keep Minsc ?

Forgotten Realms novels

So, I was browsing the Baldur's Gate wiki when I more or less stumbled upon the fact there have been novelizations done about the games, most everyone seems to think their utter jokes however upon using google, so I will be skipping those.

However, I also came to the realization I don't really know all that much about the forgotten realms setting other than the random lore scroll I occasionally went past while playing.

What books would you consider worth the time reading that has a relation to characters, events, deities and so on hinted at or seen in game?

Collection of user-friendly Walkthroughs and FAQs

So...

Some time ago, I took an interest in learning how to properly play this game, rather than just cheating my way through it; all joking aside, pressing ctrl-y to kill all your enemies gets old really quickly after the 100th time doing it. To begin my education, I figured I'd drop by GameFAQs and see if anyone had made a Walkthrough for either game's Enhanced Edition. Until a while ago there was only one for each - both written by a user called "Haeravon". You can find them at these addresses:
BGEE: http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/663933-baldurs-gate-enhanced-edition/faqs/66126
BGIIEE: http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/663934-baldurs-gate-ii-enhanced-edition/faqs/68513

After much reading and ctrl + f searching, I think my reaction can safely be surmised in the picture below.

While this was originally going to be a rant-thread, I have decided to do otherwise. Since the guides linked are so user-unfriendly, how about we instead track down guides, walkthroughs and FAQs for the series, EE and otherwise, and link to them in this thread? I know people could just search for decent walkthroughs if they really wanted to find them, but Google searching is a double-edged sword and I think a list of references makes a good place to start.

Unorthodox Tactics with NPCs

After reading a few consecutive comments that suggests that Mazzy is used as frequently for sword & shield strategies as for her mastery of shortbows, I wondered what other methods people use with the Baldur's Gate NPCs that do not line up with the obvious. What do you guys like to do?

The main one for me is making Viconia my primary tank. HP never meant a whole lot to me - at least not in BG2. With her super high Dexterity, access to the best armour, and natural Magic Resistance, Viconia can hit -10AC before you throw any buffs upon her, whilst disregarding most Mage attacks. That's pretty huge: I think you have to drop down into The Underdark in SoA before things that aren't Dragons start to hurt her. I've seen her do some neat damage with a sling before, but I don't think it is as much as Haer'Dalis, for example, can do with his weapons if Viconia is keeping the enemy attention away from him.

My secondary arcane spellcaster (usually Imoen, or Jan) tends to exclusively use the 'other' spells: Breach; Dispel Magic; Spell Shield; Summon Monster. Because this character is always able to use a Thief's array of weapons (Edwin is never a secondary spellcaster, and Aerie is never in my party), they tend to do damage that way whilst covering the bases. They come to the fore mainly in the big battles, or when all the Fighters have to step aside and let two Mages duke it out in a chess game of disarming spells.
Meanwhile, I leave it to the primary arcane caster (Edwin/Nalia/PC) to throw on the Robe of Vecna and toss out Chain Lightning, Fireball, Chaos, and the critical spells that change the early stages of a battle, before relaxing them back into Aganazzar's Scorcher, Magic Missile, and other low-artillery spells and letting the secondary caster facilitate changes in the battle.

PnP justification for Blackguards being human only?

Okay, regular paladins i get. In adnd 2nd ed they were specifically a human order. But blackguards don't seem like an "official" order, just dudes who buddied up with demons. Is there any lore-based justification for why an elf or dwarf couldn't become a blackguard, or is this an engine limitation?

Xvart Raids - quest

I tried looking for this quest everywhere on the internet but I cannot find anything related to it. There's this farmer in AR4400 (http://www.gamebanshee.com/baldursgate/walkthrough/ar4400.php) by the name of Hulrik that gives you the quest "Xvart Raids" once you successfully protect his cow Arabelle from a raid of xvarts:

"It appears that xvarts have been making regular raids on the livestock around Nashkel. They must be operating from a base nearby, but where, exactly, I cannot be sure."

I then went to the Xvart Village and kill "Nexlit the Xvart" and his entourage as well as the bear and the bear in the cave but there is no closure to the quest.

Either way, I am more interested in the knowledge of this quest since I cannot find ~any~ reference to it online.

Baldur's Gate: Gold Edition Big Box

Something I have been wondering, way back i got a box of pcgames and it had a mint baldurs gate gold edition big box and contents. Is this apparently a rare pc big box game? Checking around I see it not listed anywhere or for like $300+? I also researched that it came with both TotSC and a copy of fallout 1? I dont see a fallout 1 disc so i have idea if it is true or totally complete. I am just surprised because you can find mint BG2 collectors editon for like $25 bucks... And it was similar but more contents.

Anyone here have this BG gold edition box set?

Single click sometimes double click

I am playing BG2EE, latest patch.

I have an issue where the game is a little quicker than it should be it seems. When I do a single click, its sometimes interpreted as a double click, so I routinely put back in a single click an item Im trying to move in my inventory, and sometimes I think my orders in combat get messed up because of this. It feels like the game is a little too fast but it could also entirely be an issue about the detection of mouse clicks, I'm not sure.

Any known issues I should know about or possible fixes? Or is it entirely on my end?

Hey,
I just tried to install IWDification( http://www.gibberlings3.net/iwdification/ ) and everything workes well and fine in BG2ee but I can't seem to get it to work in BGee :(

I get the new spells and they work but none of them have descriptions and show up like this:

Since I'm not getting this in BG2ee I'm guessing I'm doing something wrong or missing something, anyone used this mod before and had the same problem but managed to fix it? Anyone knows what's wrong?

I was really looking forward to a full playthrough with additional druid spells and I would love to get it to work in BGee :(

Post your Nightmare Mode experiences here, from challenges to fun moments.

Here's me killing Niz, the Black Dragon in Suldanessellar.

Berserker 7/Cleric
Kensai 9/Mage
Inquisitor
Assassin 9/Fighter
Sorcerer

Apparantly Nightmare mode gives monsters 3 * Normal HP +80, so he should have 680 HP. I managed to deal 686, so that's pretty accurate. The reason I used such cautious tactics was to ensure easy tallying of damage.

Is cloud-saving still a development priority?

There was some talk a while back about allowing saves to sync across multiple devices. I know that's probably quite difficult to implement when you're talking about syncing games between a PC and an iPad, but has anyone found some good solutions for saves between PCs?

I travel a lot for my work and have been using Google Drive (as well as a thumb drive because I don't always have internet on both machines) to transfer saves between my desktop PC and my notebook. It works, but it hasn't exactly been convenient - are there any plans to implement a cloud save/syncing feature within the game itself?

Did you *actually* know?

I started posting random trivia about Baldur's Gate and Co. on the activity page, but it have become so many that I decided to start a new topic. If you have you yourself know an interesting piece of trivia, feel free to share.

Either way, here we go:

Did you know?

Alora isn't a halfling, she actually is a really short and petite gnome.

Bhaal and Cyric used to be lovers but Bhaal cheated on him with his sister which is why Cyric killed him.

Dynaheir sings "These boots are made for walking" by Nancy Sinatra because Dynaheir used to be Nancy Sinatra's old D'n'D player character.

CHARNAME isn't actually a Bhaalspawn, they were accidentally switched as a newborn with the temple's janitor's child. Alaundo's prophecy is just a fraud.

There is a squirrel with a powerful magic ring somewhere in the original Baldur's Gate.

Icewind Dale was named after Dale Ace Windy, a famous Canadian popstar from the 80s.

If you shoot a Magic Missile at Gorion in the very beginning of the original Baldur's Gate in Candlekeep, he will give you some very useful potions in return.

Adventure Y was originally supposed to be called Adventure Z but the devs reconsidered to avoid a potential legal suite from Bandai because of the similarity to Dragonball Z.

Kivan never had a wife, he just made the story up as part of his wrestling persona.

Sarevok was voiced by Jaleel White, who is most famous for his role as Steve Urkel in the 90s sitcom "Family Matters".

Nothing can stop the Smooze.

Edwin is actually a virgin, he is just overcompensating all the time.

When your familiar dies you may lose one constitution point, but if you keep it's corpse, Cromwell will forge a Katana +4, +2 bleeding damage/ round for 10 rounds from it.

There are actually no spambots on these forums, the mods just ban random people because the motherbrain tells them to do so.

If you wish to save Clara you need to choose the following dialogue options after meeting her: 2, 4, 1, 1, 3

There is a glitch that let's you one-hit Beholders, if you cast barkskin *and* stoneskin on yourself and then attack them with a Quarterstaff +1.

Gorion and Jaheira used to be a couple back in the day.

How long can someone survive being petrified?

This is something that I've always wondered about - how come certain characters can be "saved" after being petrified, but not others? I had assumed that this was because characters eventually die from being in the petrified state for so long, but Tamah was apparently petrified for so long that her house corroded and sunk underwater.

WEREWOLF ISLAND: All die upon arrival, does anyone know why?

As stated in the title, I've run into a major bug (I think?) as my whole party simply dies within seconds upon arrival to the island. I have some mods installed: Mini quests and encounters, Romantic encounters, NPC-project, Level 40 rule set, various NPC mods. All except the first two I've had previously installed without any problems. After some googling I'm beginning to fear that no one else have experienced this "bug" which means that no one knows how to fix it... Hence, I'm reaching out to the members of this forum.

I am also considering the possibilty of the instant death-thingie is connected to some quest or something from the first two mods which is causing this but I havent been able to figure out what to do yet to solve the problem.

Suggestions anyone?

Themed Parties - noblesse oblige

$

So, an idea hit me today.

Keldorn (noble)
Anomen (noble)
Nalia (noble)
Jaheira (noble...even though she was smuggled out as a baby and raised by druids, she still has and acknowledges her noble blood)
Vaylgar (noble)

You could have a balanced party where everyone inside of it is of noble blood.

Have Charname be a fighter to complete the ensemble. Somewhat noble-ish due to having divine blood, and you end up having social status given Nalia's keep. I'd probably make Charname a fighter/mage for this, as it just seems more posh.

Really makes me want to try it. Anyone else have any themed party ideas which really jump out at them?

7 = 3x4; 8 = 3x6; 9 = 3x8 ("Do unto the AI as you would have the AI do unto you.")

For the first time, I successfully managed to get a Sorcerer to lvl 14.
After some agonizing, I picked Spell Sequencer as my first lvl 7 pick and had an epihany:

** Sequencers function like mini-Time Stops. **

Allow me to explain:

My Dragon Disciple now starts any non-trivial fight with SIX spells within the first 7 seconds, i.e., by the time of the beginning of the second round, I have:
* fire Spell Sequencer -> cast Spell Sequencer -> fire the newly loaded Spell Sequencer

So, within first 7 seconds I typically end up casting (reflecting my current spell picks):

(Blur + Fire Shield + Imp Inv) + (3 x Ice Storm OR 3 x Fireball OR Slow+Glitterdust+Acid Arrow)

I suppose Spell Trigger opens options such as:

(PfMW + True Sight + Spell Imm) + (Malison [picking it later] + Chaos + Slow OR 3 x Chain Lightning)

I know this may be already obvious to the experts, but I just noticed the impact of such triggers on the power curve:

You expand one lvl 7 [8] spell [and another one before you engage; possibly at rest] to cast SIX lvl 4 [6] spells in the opening round of a though fight.

I realized that my Dragon Disciple can in principle destroy any cluster of Vampires:

1. buff with (PfMW + Chaotic Commands) just in case
2. unleash 6 x Fireball before they can even hit you (the last 3 likely need to be targeted on yourself as they will rush you)

(On principle, I'll refuse to pick Project Image [it should exhaust your own spell book; not duplicate it].)

I probably stumbled on something obvious to the experts, but it is very exciting.

What are some awesome combinations people successfully used?
How about Cleric/Mages?
Do you keep Sequencers memorized regularly or just use them as emergency backups?
