I love you all, but I'm kinda losing my mind atm. Holy cow!

But seriously, my mind is blown, and I'm freaking out right now. It's really, I'm not imaging it.

Why is "shapeshifter" considered such a poor class?

I was surprised recently to see a thread where shapeshifter was rated as one of the 3 worst classes in the game, right alongside wizard slayer and beastmaster. I then looked back over some archived threads, and I saw that this is actually a widely-held opinion.

I've meddled around with shapeshifter characters a bit, but I've never done an earnest playthrough. Still, I don't see what jumps out as being so terrible about them, unlike beastmaster or wizard slayer. I know that they can't wear armor, but that just means that the character (when not in werewolf form) needs to be treated with the same care as a typical mage. When in werewolf form (which they can maintain for an indefinite amount of time), they seem to be a surprisingly handy tank, or at least a flanker, especially in BG1. It seems to me that a werewolf is one of the very best shapeshifting forms available to a druid, perhaps rivaled only by the avenger's spider form, and (unlike the other druid shapeshifts) is available from level 1 onward. It also seems to make a single class druid much more useful in the early stages of BG1, where they don't really have any powerful spells other than healing.

On the flipside, I have read a number of comments about the werewolf form being "bugged," but I couldn't quite understand what the issue there is.

So what am I missing here? What makes the shapeshifter considered so bad by so many people? And what are the supposedly "buggy" issues with the werewolf form, and is it still bugged?

Recap of SoD presentation and Q/A session

This info will likely go to the 'swords not words' thread when @bengoshi gets around to it, but for anyone wondering what happened while they slept, here are the main points:

- Siege of Dragonspear starts two weeks after the defeat of Sarevok, Charname is hailed as hero but suspected of a shared lineage with Sarevok.

- During this time, a holy crusade is rising in the north, besieging dragonspear castle for supplies. They're led by a woman named Caelar Argent (or 'the Shining Lady'), whose origin is shrouded in mystery but could possibly also be a bhaalspawn. The Grand Dukes of Baldur's Gate ask you to end this crusade on their behalf, and you go north leading an army of mercenaries.

- 70 new areas, 25 voice actors with several returning from BG1/2, hundreds of new items, spells and abilities.

- Over 25 hours of new story and a bunch of side content. "Riddled with crannies" according to Phil Daigle.

- New class, shaman. Able to summon "an almost unlimited number of ghostly allies", but is rooted in place while summoning - a shaman NPC will be available.

- Meant to be more accessible than previous games without sacrificing tactical depth: new interface, journal pop-ups that deliver concise journal information (longer entries with more lore are still available); combat health bars (optional); inventory highlighting that suggests which characters to give items to.

- New difficulty modes: story mode (easy combat); "legacy of bhaal" difficulty, similar to heart of fury, for veteran players.

- Combines open-world exploration of BG1, iconic locations from BG2, art and combat from IWD.

From UI and character creation demos:

- Many parts of the UI can be modified drag/drop style from within the game.

- Colour slider options during character creation, increasing the number of available hair, skin and clothing colours.

From the Q/A:

- New level cap is 12, unclear if it's for all classes.

- No new Noober character.

- Will ship when ready.

- There will be multiplayer.

- Interface improvements will be ported to the other EE games.

- Pantaloons quest unchanged.

- Dorn, Neera and Rasaad will return.

- Starting party if you don't import, dependant on your alignment - three different canon starting parties. Can import your full party from BG:EE.

- Equipment you have in BG:EE carries over to SoD.

- Romances from BG:EE carry over.

- No multiclass shaman.

- No stronghold.

- BG2 will be updated so shaman characters can be imported.

- SoD NPCs can't be taken into BG2.

- Modding is supported.

- IE pathfinding has been improved.

- Will be supported for devices that support the EE games.

- BG2 start will be modified to a limited extent, such as SoD items possibly carrying over.

- Easier switching between ranged and 2H/dual weapons will be implemented.

- No Saemon Havarian in SoD.

What do you think about maximum age being implemented?

I recall soloing icewind dale with a human was really not
very realistic, because the resting times got pretty long later...

1) weidu, dltcep, nearinfinity: will they work with it upon release?

How do XP caps for BGEE, SOD, and BG2EE going to work now?

How do XP caps for BGEE, SOD, and BG2EE going to work now? Since SOD is in between BGEE and BG2EE, and we can continue from SOD to BG2EE, does that then mean that our CHAR is going to start BG2EE with a higher XP than pre-SOD BG2EE?

Playing in a virtual machine

Hi all,

Just wondering (before shelling out cash)... is anyone out there playing BG:EE/BG2:EE in any type of virtual machine environment? Does it perform adequately? (... and if so, which VM are you using, what's the host OS, etc.?)

I'm at work and it's boring as HELL, so humor me, who is your favorite and why?

Add your least favorite in the comments, because reasons.

I left out Baeloth and the bards because Beamdog's ballot is baselessly bitty.

My first 97 roll - synchronicity?

Hey, I was just inspired by the character Jon Morgan from Heroes of Might and Magic 6 to start thinking about this new character I might play for the BG Trilogy, including Adventure Y.

And, lo and behold, while trying to establish and save a prototype, I got the first 97 roll I've ever seen in my life!

The character that inspired me was from Might and Magic Duel of Champions, a Haven hero who leads the human faction, hates evil magic, and can heal himself. I've started building a deck that's based on Haven stacking, and he's doing pretty well with it so far (in the card game). I've only recently fired up HoMM6 and started the first tutorial mission, with Haven, but I've found out enough to know that the card game I'm enjoying is completely inspired by HoMM6. All the hero cards come from that game.

He's this guy:

Yada, yada, yada, TLDR, I've found that I really identify with the equivalent of inquisitors/knights/paladins/clerics, human "holy rollers" who hate evil magic of all kinds. And, in youth, I had the brown hair and hairiness of Morgan, symbolized by his beard. So, I started thinking, hey, there's a perfect tie-in to BG here, where I could play "Keldorn".

So, I could play this 97 roll, which I've saved as a new inquisitor file, as though I *am* Keldorn. The one in BG2 will not exist in this hypothetical run. In BG1, I would be this "young" version of myself/big K/Morgan:
image

And, in BG2, I would be the "me" version of the Big K we all know and love, except, of course, I would never have married or started a family, and the canon version of Big K would then not exist in my game.
image

I might even post a journaled run with this dude after Adventure Y is released. I'm kind of tripping on the idea of this version of "me" from youth to middle/old age in the BGT universe, including whatever the new adventure will be.

Side question: Will "Adventure Y" be released on Steam? I'm kind of into the idea of eventually buying all of the EE's on Steam now, so that I can get the nice in-game counter, and the inclusion of the EE's to my general collection.

BG2:EE Story Tweaks Mod (FEEDBACK!)

Cross-posted from the BG2 Modding section - that one's looking for help on the programming side, this one's meant for commentary on the creative aspect.

This is a proposal for a BG2:EE Story Tweaks mod, designed to address certain plotholes and inconsistencies in the EE content. The scale of these proposed tweaks is deliberately small and limited, to interfere as minimally as possible with existing game content.

Attached is the general overview; I've been working on dialogue/banter, but decided to pause and gauge interest in the project before committing any more time and effort.

So: feedback/technical suggestions are welcome!

So I'm planning my second play through, but this time I want to escape my comfort zone, so this time my charname will be avoiding arcane classes completely so I need some recommendation and tips on playing a melee physical character. I don't normally play warriors because ibtens to find them boring. I normally just toss the best armor on my meatshield and spend 90% of my time on my arcane characters or just watching the massacre.

Chances are I'm more then likely going to end up playing a thief or Archer class. Maybe even a monk, but what are some ways to make warriors feel more fun?

Note, in not sure if I'll be starting from BG 1 this time.

If there is no real way, then I might just do a duo run. Jaheira and Sorcerer/ general mage charname.

New Content. When???

One of.... No... The biggest reason I ponied up for all three Beamdog Enhancements is the new content. Ultimately it has been minimal. Mods already had most of it covered. But wishful thinking and hope drives me to support. But we have not rec'd crap since the initial releases. I am talking extra, buyable, downloadable content. I am more than willing to pay as I love the IE engine.

When will New content be available for purchase via the store? Is there a plan?

Beamdog, you up took the IE standard and became its bearer. You rekindled our hearts a few years ago. You are now the true IE fan's Obi-Wan. Help us Beamdog....

EE OSX Versions: Beamdog, GoG, App Store?

I have been running a wineskin version of BGT forever. However, with my retina MacBook Pro I am having trouble getting the widescreen mod to work. Now that most of the mods I use seem to work with the EE version, I thought it might be time to give it a try. I have a couple of questions from those who are running the game on a Mac before I purchase.

1. Is the game the same no matter where you buy it? I have bought a lot of stuff from GoG and I also see that it is in the Mac App Store.

2. I read a couple of reviews on the Mac App store that the game was unplayable with a retina Macbook Pro. Something about text and text tooltips too small to read. Anybody running on a rMbpro and have a good experience?

BG saga

Hey fellow adventurers!
I have this strange problem which I wanted to share. You see, I have been playing BG saga for last 11 years. I began doing it just after my english skills were high enough for me to understand what the story is about. Every year, around june or july I create a new character whom I always love. And every time I spend many, many hours in character creation sheet. Everything must be perfect. Name, race, class and biography. Well, everything. Afterwards my adventure begins. Oh, those goblins and demons! My half brother and his evil plans! Mysterious mage which imprisoned myself and my friends. And eventually comes battle for Iron, sorry, Bhaals throne. At this point, when about 2 months of real playtime has passed, I uninstall my game and seek something else. I have never, not even once finished ToB. I even managed not to read any spoilers about what happens in the end. I have this feeling that if I finally finish whole saga about Bhaalspawn it is going to be the end of it. Fairy tale which will become boring afterwards. So my fellow adventurers, had any of you such problem? Does the game becomes different when it's done?

PS. Sorry about any misspelling. I am writing on my phone and recently have begun learning norwegian and both languages just mixed up.

Got out my old 4 in 1 boxset, installed it and Tutu'd BG for that classic experience. Started a Human Male Abjurer, got a good stat roll (after some time), breezed through Candlekeep, stepped out into the big, wide world, got instagibbed by a Diseased Gibberling in my very first fight outside Candlekeep.

Yep. It's Baldur's Gate alright. Anybody else ever had such a fun start to their adventure?

Playing BG2/SOA but not EE.

So, I'm in the Planar Prison & I've killed almost everything but lost an NPC, Auren, who fell into one of the 'holes.'

I saved Auren's equipment & am ready to raise dead w/Anomen.

But, every time I try to sleep, I go thru the sleep sequence but the game freezes up as soon as I get to the part where I'd be able to start playing again. I'm well into the game so I don't lose this.

The Error Massage says, "An Assertion failed in ObjCreatureAI.cpp at line number 17023.

I have three saves, two of them doing this same thing every time.

I have an Auto Save that is before my party entered the prison & I could go back but I prefer to drive on. Help is appreciated so I can continue the butt whoopin'.
