Describe a character in just one sentence (Spoilers, probably)

As the title suggests, pick a character from BG and Co. and try to descibe them in only one (short) sentence.
Don't name the character, that's up for the readers to guess ;)

I'll start:
Emo elf who's out for revenge.

April, 25 and your chance to speak to the Developers. The game exhibition with Beamdog in Edmonton

This year, there will be a big game development event called the Game Discovery Exhibition (GDX).

It's happening on April 25th, 2015, and the hope is to bring together the game community in Edmonton to show off their projects and portfolios, network with other developers, and generally celebrate game development. Ideally, they'd like to make this a yearly gathering for Edmonton-based game devs and players.

The format is going to be a lot like GDC, PAX, IGF and so on. Developers will be there showing off their demos and portfolios of work. There will also be panels on serious games, indie games, and both the tech and art side of the games industry.

Beamdog will be in attendance and on panels, so if you're interested in game development, it's definitely worth checking out! We also want to encourage anyone who's interested in playing games to check out the projects on display, so feel free to invite anyone you know!

So, you can come and speak with the developers.

Warning for IPAD gamers - IOS version 8.3

All

I learned this the hard way two weeks ago. The latest version of IOS disables the use of iFunBox to transfer savegames to and from your Ipad. the latest IOS pretty much renders iFunBox useless, it doesn't allow iFunBox to interact with the subfolders of virtually any app. Its an issue specific to IOS 8.3 - iFunBox has come with a minor patch that allows CERTAIN apps to interact with iFunBox (things like VLC player, but also games like Star Wars - Knights of the Old Republic). However, none of the BG-style games are on that list - it has something to do with how the app interacts with IOS. Furthermore, neither IOS 8.2 nor 8.3 are jailbreakable.

If you've upgraded, here is a very useful guide to downgrade to IOS 8.2

http://www.redmondpie.com/how-to-downgrade-ios-8.3-on-your-iphone-or-ipad/

Not sure if I should post this to the individual game folders or here - its applicable to BG, BG2 and IWD. I'd say the best possible suggestion would be to email the developers of the games to issue an update that mods the games to have "Itunes File Sharing" enabled. I'm not sure if thats the only working fix - somehow Star Wars - KOTOR, still allows the transfer of saved file. Here's a post detailing the issue and the fix.

hope this help anyone who ran into the same problem I did

IWD2EE speculation

I see a lot of people mentioning IWD2EE. I am genuinely curious as to what they (and others) think could be enhanced with that, other than technical features like HD, zoom, etc.

While the BG series is (now) mostly in 2.5e, IWD2 is mostly in 3.5e. As such, vanilla already has half-orcs, and even tieflings, drow, aasimar and other sub-races. Monks are also already present, and while not all classes have kits, the Cleric has more choices than BG2. Dual- and multiclassing is a non-issue because of 3.5e, and that gives both powergamers and roleplayers virtually unlimited freedom in building their character. You can build your half-orc wizard or dwarven sorcerer, or a quintuple-class character. ...and I can have my ranger/sorcerer.

Icewind Dale 2 was the first Infinity Engine game I ever played, and I still love it to bits. This is not to bash any ruleset, but wouldn't IWD2 in the BGEE engine technically be a downgrade? Would there be issues concerning the rights to the game, because of the difference in ruleset?

Let us share our thoughts. :)

Castle Ravenloft IE game, Beamdog/WOTC why not??...or at least Dragon Lance

Just wondering now that were seeing a resurgence of the IE games enhanced editions and new ones as well (Adventure Y) which I love but have been wondering how come they havent made a good ravenloft game after Strahds Possession/based on castle ravenloft which I think still stands as the best D&D product out there in terms of numbers?

Would look at it as IWD style but different (and refreshing) change which now with the all horror genre in movies/tv etc so popular would for sure be a big hit plus you have all the great Ravenloft lore to go with castle ravenloft which can continue i.e house on gryphon hill, darklords/Azalin/Lord Soth, grand conjunction etc.

Talking about Lord Soth he's actually back in Dragonlance I think but that would make a great game as well.

Am I the only one here thats been wanting this and think it could even rival BG series or am I on crazy pills??

Hey everyone! In case it got lost in the "news" section, I thought I'd post here about our new enhanced Beamblog. We kicked it off yesterday with a contest (you could win a cool book) and today we have a post about our D&D game. Tomorrow there will be something special to wrap up the week of posts!

(Not adventure Y related so don't get your hopes up.)

How much does 'raising dead' cost in PnP? I want to change the price accordingly.

Hi there. I posted a thread asking whether resting is cheesy in RP perspectives/balance-wise a few days ago. After hearing various opinions, I decided that I am only going to rest in INNs or only once in each area after cleaning the area of dangers for a role-playing purpose. I enjoy restricting myself from any kind of abuses of game mechanics. (resting after each battle = infinite spamming of level 9 spells)

I have come across another one of these balance problems; that is, raising dead. In the game, it is treated so casually that it's a common practice to raise the same dead party member over and over again throughout the course of the game. Afaik, raising dead should be extremely expansive, restrictive with Constitution-based chance and such, and only doable by few individuals favoured-by-gods. PnP's gold value also must be more valuable than in BG where gold drops like rain everywhere you go. In game raising the same party member like 100 times won't even be a strain to your coins. Chunking does not happen as often as I like, so I felt I want to make a house rule.

I do not want to abuse the raise-dead function and want to change the price at temples accordingly using DLCEP. I want to find a right balance so that raising the dead is not an obvious choice but something that you will consider carefully. Of course, raising the dead will in most cases preferable to abandoning the dead party member, but at least I want to make it so I have to work towards it by doing some quests and collecting loots.

I need some sort of reference from PnP to decide what price will be appropriate. I cannot implement time restriction(only raise within 24 hours, for instance) and I do not want to over complicate this, so I just want to adjust price. I've thought of two options so far. I would like to hear your feedback as to RP relevance and balance.

1. increase price by 10 times. 1000 to raise dead at level 1, 2000 at level 2, etc upto 300,000 at level 40ish.

2. increase price by 50 times at level 1 and fix it to that amount. 5,000 gold to raise dead throughout the game.

In both cases, when I have an access to raise dead spells/scrolls, I will only use those as much as affordable then donate the appropriate money to temples as soon as possible. If I used raise dead spells 5 times, with the rule 2, I will donate 25,000 gold to temples after wards. If I feel the party member is not worth the price, I will simply drop him/her from the party.

However at this point these numbers are completely arbitrary and I have no PnP knowledge or RP perspectives to justify the number. Some feedback would be appreciated.

Good PC for evil-ish all-women party?

I've played through BGEE a couple of times and I've only just barely gotten out of the first dungeon of BG2EE and I finally know enough about 2 and the NPCs that I like that I want to do a full run of the trilogy. I'm interested in a party only containing women (no gender change belt or anything either) and with only vanilla NPCs. I also don't have to use a full group, but I would like at least 4 so as not to run into the EXP cap too early.

So far, my picks for both games are:

BGEE:
CHARNAME
Viconia
Shar-Teel
Neera
Safana
Jaheira (??? maybe?)

BG2EE:
CHARNAME
Viconia
Hexxat (because I'm really really gay, okay)
Neera
Jaheira (again a maybe)

I don't mind a bit of a challenge, and I'm not really personally interested in playing either a F/M (whether multi or dual) or a Blade. The weakness I see is that there isn't really a strong frontline attacker in BG2 because I'm not using Dorn or whatever the dwarf NPC was named, so I'm considering either a Berserker or Blackguard but I don't want to get bored with click/wait for the enemy to die.

But yeah, recommendations? Could I maybe go crazy and try without a frontline fighter and instead go with something like Avenger or Stalker? I'm also open to a lot of multi-class options, although I'm a little reluctant to dual because of downtime and the encouragement to powergame more (I like my RP which is what makes me reluctant to be a bloodthirsty Blackguard.)

If BG came out today...

We have a successful You know you're playing too much Baldur's Gate when... thread.

Recently, having seen a post by @terzaerian‌ , another idea of a thread came to me.

So, if BG came out today...

1. Each stronghold would have been a $25 piece of DLC

2. Steam would explode with 1 000 000 000 of people currently playing BG

3. People would name their children "Sarevok" and "Shar-Teel"

4. There would appear 1000+ mods about cars, underwear and bras on the Sword Coast

5. We would have the proper TV series about the Iron Throne

If BG was released as an MMO with poor business choices...

As inspired by @bengoshi 's "If BG came out today...", let's imagine a completely HORRIBLE world where Baldur's Gate was a terrible MMO that used every tactic it could to suck the gold our of your purses!

[["Gems" is my term for in-game currency that is only obtainable by spending real money]]

0. First off, the game would cost ~$30 beforehand. You can buy the "Enchanted Enhanced Edition" for $55, and it comes with a starter pack, 100 free "gems" and a limited edition Dorn skin. Or, you could buy the "Extra Enchanted Limited Edition Enhanced Edition" for $120, which comes with an extra portrait pack, 200 free "gems", free Premium membership for a month, a "super rare" item and an extra Neera skin, but NOT the Dorn skin. You need to purchase the game twice for the extra Dorn skin.

1. Rerolls, instead of being infinite, would cost "gems". If you get a crappy roll, you're stuck with it.

2. To make matters worse, you can't get a roll higher than 82, because you need to buy a premium account to unlock "the full potential of your dice".

3. Treasure becomes a lot worse, but you have the option to "Reloot" certain objects for a "Higher chance at super rare items!" (Something like a 0.1% chance), at the cost of "gems", of course.

4. Your level cap is 10, but Premium Members get a level cap of 15, Super Premium Members get a cap of 20, and Super Extra Premium members get a level cap of 30.

5. [The final boss] becomes five times harder, forcing you to need the higher level caps. When you beat them, there's a chest that requires a special golden magical key to open, which can be purchased at "The Super Shop".

6. "The Super Shop" is only available to Super Premium members, where you can buy various secret items such as a "special golden magical key"... all for the price of gems, of course.

7. Purchasing a Super Extra Premium membership will give you a "cool limited edition badge" on your forum profile.

8. Any modifications made to your copy of the game through means of third party tools will result in a permanent ban. No refunds on any memberships, "gems", DLC, or anything else you may have purchased.

9. Always Online DRM. Disconnecting through means other than pressing ESC and selecting "quit" will result in both a temporary ban and a 10% reduction of your current EXP and gold.

10. Premium classes and races that are stronger than the default ones. Alongside this, premium "Cool" portraits for male characters and "Sexy" portraits for female characters... all bought with "gems". Oh, and you're limited to one character, unless you spend "gems" to unlock more character slots!

...and why is it the Bounty Hunter?
Goddamn I love this guy so much. Scout the place, set the traps, backstab a sucker and let the rest chase you, hear that nice SNAP sound and watch everything explode.
Stand aside ASSassins and swashies, Bounty Hunter is king.

first no reload attempt

So I generally solo but also decided to run a no reload attempt.

First game (charname is blade), killed by random encounter with 6 or more bandits using short bows on transition to fai.

Second attempt, blade again, exact same thing happens... Couldn't even escape screen in time.

What gives? At least I can run away from wolves... 8 hp is like 2 arrows...

BG1(Enhanced, BG2(Enhanced), or Pillars?

So I want to start playing one of the three games posted in my title. Does anyone have any recommendation for which I should begin first? I've heard BG2 is a vast improvement over the first, however is it recommended to start at the first game?

Looking for someone with experience that could help give me some insight.

Thanks.

I can't find Saemon!

I finished up Spellhold, went to the tavern and was given the quest to get the horn at night. So I got the horn at night, and I went to the docks to search for Saemon. He was nowhere to be found where he normally was, so I figured the enhanced edition relocated him.
Did I do something wrong? How do I fix it? I need to find Saemon because I really enjoy the Fish City, and from a roleplaying perspective the 2nd encounter with Spectator in Ch. 9 won't make any sense if I don't run into him in Ch. 4
Is there possibly a cheat code I can use to spawn Saemon? Did I not look in the right place?

Spells that don't interrupt

$

I know this isn't down to particular spells because sometimes the same spell will be interrupted, sometimes it won't.

For example, fighting Bassilus just now and was sure I generally interrupt his rigid thinking spell (his first cast), then use a potion of free action if I cannot interrupt his hold spells next. This time, hit him with an arrow during casts of both and he has pain animation but spell is still cast.

I've noticed this since vanilla but have never understood it... as I understand a spell should be interrupted 100% of the time if the enemy has the pain animation.

Fast (safe) XP in early BGEE

Some I know of...

Killing Firebead (cheesy and evil), I never personally do this. IIRC he is worth 4k or something and he still appears in Beregost later.

@Blackraven suggested sneaking along the High Hedge border into the North Coast area and taking down Shaol they nymph with ranged weaponry for a fast 5k.

Talking down Marl and carrying out Firebead's quest in Feldpost's is a fast and safe 1200xp (works out to a guaranteed level up if a solo char on level 1.

I wonder whether Basilisks are doable (at least some of them), with Korax the Ghoul's help (just stay well back and pepper with ranged weaponary). IIRC they're worth 7k (greater) and 4k (normal).

Anyone else got any decent/ better ones?

Replacing NPC portraits: Do you do it?

$

Lately I've been ranting about the BG2 portraits a lot because frankly every time I see them I sort of want to gouge out my eyes. I've overridden every single one of mine and am very pleased with my party's appearance now.

Two characters, Nalia and Mazzy, I don't really think even fit their portraits. That's just not how I picture them, and I especially hate the hair. Why is Bioware so obsessed with that same random braided shoulder-length style? I've replaced both ladies with completely different appearances altogether:
This is what I use for Nalia:
photo NNaliaL_zpsa20543e6.png
by hel999 on deviantART
When I saw it I immediately thought it was perfect. A young noble girl with a slightly defiant look to her eyes but still overall poised and proper. Her hair is neat and simple but not overly fussed over.

And for Mazzy:
photo NMazzyL_zpsf7584d1e.png
from the original Neverwinter Nights
Just looks far more like a proper knight to me, and I can hear her voice from that image more too. I just ignore the hair color inconsistency.
It's made me curious if others ever do this. Are there any NPCs that you picture differently in your mind? Have you ever seen a picture and thought that it really fits an NPC better than their default one?
