powergaming party (BG2 TOB,NPC and multiplayer)

$

What is the most powergaming party that you can think of?

two different groups of posts
1) multiplayer created party by player. What classes/races (and items)
2) charname + npc's. What npc's
-this is not 1 vs 2 but creating 2 different threads for 1 purpose is silly
-bg2 tob exp limit
-no mods

and why is this the most powergaming?

for example
F/M/T half-elf - like kensai mage but +100dmg with backstab
Kensai13/Mage - i think everyone know why kensai/mage
cleric/specjalist mage - healer who is almost immortal
mage slayer13/mage - antimage
edwin - most spells

npc's
F/M/T op op
sarevok dualed to mage op
edwin - op op op
aerie - op multi
keldorn - op dispell
Cernd - SS f yeah

like you can see I prefer magic :)

Had a moment of panic yesterday....
Swapped over from a Samsung S3 to a shiny new HTC One M9.

But thankfully, everything still works on the new phone - BGEE, BG2EE and Icewind Dale.

Good job Devs!

Post your Nightmare Mode experiences here, from challenges to fun moments.

Here's me killing Niz, the Black Dragon in Suldanessellar.

Berserker 7/Cleric
Kensai 9/Mage
Inquisitor
Assassin 9/Fighter
Sorcerer

Apparantly Nightmare mode gives monsters 3 * Normal HP +80, so he should have 680 HP. I managed to deal 686, so that's pretty accurate. The reason I used such cautious tactics was to ensure easy tallying of damage.

As I learn more from this forum, I realize how much about the game I didn't know about. There were items, strategies and spells that could have made my life a lot easier against various monsters. There were dialogue options I had never been given. Easter Eggs I never knew about. Etc, etc.

I was interested in seeing this kind of topic ever since my boy @Quartz‌ said that he never made Crom Faeyr. So I made this thread for us all to confess our Baldur's Gate sins. Come and admit that you never completed your stronghold, you've never even heard of Kangaxx, never killed Firkraag or are still dying to know where Hull misplaced his longsword.

I'll begin:

Confession: I have never done the Viconia romance.

Confession: I have never played a thief character.

Is cloud-saving still a development priority?

There was some talk a while back about allowing saves to sync across multiple devices. I know that's probably quite difficult to implement when you're talking about syncing games between a PC and an iPad, but has anyone found some good solutions for saves between PCs?

I travel a lot for my work and have been using Google Drive (as well as a thumb drive because I don't always have internet on both machines) to transfer saves between my desktop PC and my notebook. It works, but it hasn't exactly been convenient - are there any plans to implement a cloud save/syncing feature within the game itself?

Help justify this playthrough please

Well I find myself back plotting another play through, and I really want to, in one fell swoop, experience a blade, DD, and Archer. So Im thinking do an scs run with 3 pc chars only. Problem is im having problems justifying why a half elf , elf, and dwarf are roaming around together and are all super powerful (im not on board the randomized roll train )... can someone give me a good kick start on the creativity? Really dont wanna start it up unless i have a good RP angle to keep me going.

High level dualing, when is it worth it?

Topic was observed in passing in another thread, but I thought it worth discussing in its own right.

Traditionally, the best time to dual is around level 9/10 when the first class has picked up most of its perks, but the xp/level has not yet flattened out. The 'obvious' alternatives are something like dualing from fighter, where delaying till 13th gets you an extra 1/2 attack/round an another weapon pip, or from druid who benefit from low xp/level up until 12 (and then the xp curve takes a nose-dive).

However, occasionally we hear about folks taking the original class up to a HLA or two before dualing, so I am curious to hear about good reasons for doing so. At this point, we are no worried about the downtime, but more that we see a real benefit /after/ the downtime, compared to the equivalent multiclass. If there is little difference, then the multiclass would seem the more playable way to reach your goals, and may actually be superior as it will have another 6-12 HLAs picked up during that downtime. So any comparison must allow for the multi having more HLAs, and the ability to choose from both class HLAs at each subsequent level. The latter may be less of an issue for a highly-planned character, who is in the 'correct' final class for preferred HLAs (e.g., cleric -> thief dual is more useful than thief -> cleric).

So what does a dual class buy us? It buys us a character kit from the class we dual out of. That can be a significant boost, but varies from kit to kit on how much additional benefit you get from more levels. Which kits are most compelling for a high-level dual? Swashbuckler -> Fighter is one example that comes to mind. Full fighter THAC0 and HLAs, with a further +5 from swash kit.

Also consider that while you cannot dual /into/ a kit (without mods) you can get an illusionist kit into a multi class, thanks to gnomes. Given it is unusual to dual /out/ of mage, especially once the 9th level spells are flowing, I would be very interested to hear of benefits from late specialist mage dualing that justify not being a gnome.

Finally (of the points I am aware of) there is the question of a fighter's weapon pips. Being able to take grand mastery is privilege of the dual class, not available to the multi - but this can be achieved at 9th level, and a popular bug in the game engine allowed the dualed class to continue taking weapon proficient past 2 pips, even with their non-fighter level. So while the pips are nice, I'm not sure I see much benefit past the traditional 9th/13th level switches, unless there is some 'grand master of many weapons' role that has so far eluded me. Maybe you need a specific fighter HLA (in addition to 5 pips) before dualing? But why not dual /into/ fighter if that is the case?

So for the creative character builders out there - what are the high level duals that really shine, or offer something unique?

I role-play a neutral evil mage and my reputation is 20.

I don't think the game tailors at all to an evil play. I've been role-playing a neutral evil mage, and I ended up with reputation of 20 and with good companions.

In contrast to real life, being good in the game is enormously more advantageous than being bad. There are simply not many, if any at all, evil choices that my MC would deem worthwhile to hard his reputation as a hero party, despite his more selfish and evil interior motives and personality.

In addition, why would anyone want to travel with 'evil' companions that will likely sell you out for golds? Even if my MC is evil, unless he is either stupid or lunatic, he is going to travel with good companions for the public display and their loyalty as long as he can conceal his real motives. The notion that evil MC would want to travel with evil companions doesn't make sense unless the MC has chosen a job of bandit or serial killer, neither of which are feasible choice in the game.

There hasn't been single evil choice(few in BG2 and TOB but non affecting reputation) the prospect of which seem profitable enough to reveal my MC's true intention. Hence the 20 reputation and good natured companions.

If reputation played bigger parts that your good companions won't abide by even one evil choice you do and there were some evil paths that profits you greatly, playing an evil MC might have been feasible. In real life good companions will probably attack you for killing one innocent civilian instead of tolerating a murder for every 1000 gold you pay to temples.

Having HLA spells as abilities instead of top level spells

I think there is an SCS option for this right?

What are the thoughts on this generally?
It seems it is a trade off since with it:
- Sorcerer cannot summon Planetar after Planetar (activateable only once)
BUT
- But your F/M that made it lvl 18 finally does not need to trade its singular cast of Time Stop to choose between a Planetar or Comet or whatever.

Is the SCS compromise balanced or should it be viewed as unfair?
(How is it in PnP?)

Is there any mod that makes learning magic costly?

AFAIK, in D&D, writing a spell to a spellbook takes a day and 100 golds per level of the spell(9 days and 900 golds for a level 9 spell). Is there any mod that replicate this behavior? Requiring certain materials to cast magic would be unfeasible, but this I could see being implemented via a mod. I would love to lose 900 golds trying to write down level 9 spell and fail. After all there are too much golds to spend in BG1/BG2.

In addition, are there any more of these kinds of mods that replicate PnP rules and overall makes the game more hardcore(not in cheesy way)&RP friendly, such as making INN fee more expansive?

There seems to be a lot of mods but not many that overhauls the game. I love BG so much that I've been replaying the game many times, and I would love to see some fresh changes.

Is resting cheesy in RP perspectives?

I've never had much difficulty with BG1/2 even in my first playthrough; I rested after each fight, and my party was almost always fully buffed, in full HP, with arsenal of various spells ready.

Replaying the game with BGEE and BG2EE with Roleplaying mindsets, I am restricting myself by not using any buffs before combats and not using meta-knowledge for things like spell choices. (that's why I always memorize at least one protect from petrification.) This adds a bit of unpredictability. However, I feel it is not enough and magic still feels a bit overpowered. I am thinking of resting in each area only once.

The problem is that I don't know if it makes any sense RP wise. In PnP or real life, how often do adventurers rest? Do they refill used spells after each fight? Or do they clear a dungeon without resting? I can justify it with some made up explanations, but I would like to know which way is the most fitting RP wise. Rest after each fight? Rest after x number of fights? Don't rest until you've returned to INN?

I love wild magic!

Story time.

I'm doing a no-reload run with wild magic. My character is a chaotic neutral int 16 half orc barbarian. The idea is that because everyone assumed he was dumb, his entire life has been doing manual, unskilled labor in Candlekeep. No training with the watchers, no tutelage...just labor. His fighting style is maces/flails. Blunt objects swung with force. While his one dream was to be a mage like Gorion, he has bought into the idea that he is a dumb brute who is good for nothing besides lifting heavy objects. The only people he feels comfortable with are those who he sees as being outcasts or underdogs. As such, his part is composed of Neera, Viconia and Baeloth. I'll probably add in Tiax later.

Well, for wild magic...I ran into Nimbul. Magic missiles were cast by Neera and Baeloth. A large group of soldiers turned to fire. My eyes popped as a cow dropped from the sky. It exploded, killing all but one soldier. My reputation went down to '1.' For the first time in any playthrough, I have bounty hunters and mercenaries after Charname.

It is amazing! A single spell changed the entire tone of the game. People died...and the authorities won't believe that a half-orc, half-elf and two drow are innocent. Sure, there was no 'intention' for the murder of so many innocents. But that isn't here or there.

I have a new found respect for the power of a surge. I dread the idea of a demon being summoned. Up until now the worst I had seen was having strange colors appear.

Wild magic is my new best friend. Though I'll likely be more careful about casting anything when innocents are around...

Has the difficulty been toned down in BG:EE?

$

I play both BGEE and BGT due to the latter having more mod compatibility, and BGEE seems to have an easier start. I played both on core difficulty without mods.

In BGT, I occasionally met dire wolves and even dread wolves(650xp!) in the first area after I left candlekeep. In my last play, I killed 2 dread wolves on that map alone without resting. However, I haven't seen dread wolves in BGEE so far and the number of spawns seem less in BGEE.

I'm not a fanatic purist but lowering difficulty, if true, seems bad because it breaks the immersion for me. I love the feeling of accomplishment from being desperate and weak in BG1's start and becoming more powerful later on. Could anyone confirm/deny this?

I read some claims that many developers from the original BG1/BG2 worked on BGEE and BG2EE. Does anyone know details as to who they are, and which position they had in developing the original BG1/BG2? Are there any core members such as senior designers/lead director/writers from the original game?

The “Adventure Y”. Swords, not words. Only facts

This thread is for official facts ONLY.

New posts will be added with every new news available. For discussion, go to http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/26673/all-you-wanted-to-know-about-the-adventure-y-the-unofficial-thread-for-this-project

1. This year, the eagerly anticipated Adventure Y will finally navigate the dark underground caverns of development and venture out into the Sword Coast. We’ve mentioned before that Adventure Y will be an addition to the Baldur’s Gate line using the Infinity engine, bridging the gap between Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition and Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition. Keep an eye on the Beamblog in late spring for announcements regarding the content and release date of Adventure Y. We have an exciting release planned for this game, something bigger than we’ve ever done before.

http://www.baldursgate.com/

The closest thing we have to a release date is (hopefully) sometime in the 2nd half of 2015.

2. The scope of the Adventure Y.

"Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition DLC Content, English: 396,359 words

Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition: 573,247 words

Adventure Y will come in well above the BGII:EE DLC Content, and somewhere below IWD:EE."

http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/comment/618298/#Comment_618298

3. Who will be the main character of this Adventure?

It is CHARNAME from the BG line.

http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/2msl96/we_are_beamdog_developers_of_baldurs_gate_i_ii/cm780aq

4. There will be NPCs in the Adventure Y. The ones we can take into a party.

http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/2msl96/we_are_beamdog_developers_of_baldurs_gate_i_ii/cm7810d

Adventure Y will have at least one new NPC whose name starts with "Gl". Also, there can be more: "There are a few characters in Adventure Y I'm just in love with. One in particular I plan to use as my next PC if I ever find time to get involved in a p&p game again" (Andrew Foley). Maybe in the future this or these NPC (s) will appear in BG2EE.

5. Will the Adventure Y be dubbed?

Yes, we are going to record English voices for the major characters. As for other languages, we'll have to wait and see and the costs are very high for the quality we demand.

We're going to use the BG1 method you reference as our model.

http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/2msl96/we_are_beamdog_developers_of_baldurs_gate_i_ii/cm79l8h

6. Will the Adventure Y be released as a standalone game?

We are still talking this through with everyone involved. So far we are still leaning in the expansion direction.

http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/2msl96/we_are_beamdog_developers_of_baldurs_gate_i_ii/cm77yin

7. The plot.

There’s an idea that the Adventure Y takes place after Sarevok's defeat and shreds some light on those “circumstances much darker than anyone would have thought” under which the Bhaalspawn left for Amn. So this adventure would probably take place between the two games and end with the Bhaalspawn getting captured by Irenicus.

It’s interesting to take into account that TrentOster - after looking (6 September 2013) at a feature request of an interlude chapter that narrates the happenings between Sarevok's ending and the capture of the Bhaalspawn by Irenicus - said “Sounds kind of adventurey. Could be a fun concept.” (http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/comment/350159/#Comment_350159)

One can interpret “adventurey” as “adventure y”.

8. The writers busy with the Adventure Y.

"Trent laid down the basis for the Adventure Y campaign. I (i.e. Phillip Daigle) am directing Adventure Y, and in doing so provide oversight for game plot and text. Andrew and Amber are the lead writers. Liam has done some writing for Adventure Y, but he's not a full time writer on the project and has other responsibilities.

Most of the development team has contributed to the game text in some way, and after release I'm sure they'll come by to tell you about all the easter eggs they hid in the game."

http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/comment/614871/#Comment_614871

9. Importing and exporting of your BG saves and the Adventure Y.

"You'll import your BG:EE save, and then you can export from Adventure Y to BG2:EE."

http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/comment/610307/#Comment_610307

10. Your XP and the Adventure Y.

"We had a lot of talks about how big is too big, how small is too small, and in the end I think people will be pleased with the direction we took.

Early on we had discussions about how we would make it work if you can gain a couple more levels than SoA expects. We've put in some work on that front and we're predicting it won't be an issue.

As for the size of the adventure, Adventure Y has shaped up to be larger than ToTSC but not quite the size of ToB.

From a chronological perspective it happens over a quite limited period of time, so it should fit in nicely with the other games."

http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/comment/608099/#Comment_608099

11. There will be a shorty NPC or two in the Adventure Y.

"I wouldn't be surprised if CHARNAME encountered a shorty or two hanging around on their journey through Adventure Y."

http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/comment/605034/#Comment_605034

12. Fan gets to name/design a character

Fan's character will not be a gnome and will be of a playable race (with the hope that someday he is made into an NPC mod).

13. Its not BG3

14. New music by Sam Hulick

15. Jennifer Hale was talked to at one point about another project (Providing voicework for Dynaheir perhaps?)

16. VO work is being done in both Edmonton and LA.

17. BG2EE related reveals.

-Rasaad mentions Jaheira and Khalid being separated at Bridgefort (a stronghold near Boareskyr Bridge)
-Neera mentions Khalid making her soup when they were in Bridgefort
-Neera's ToB quest refers to Charname as the Victor of the Dragonspear Crusade

http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/comment/607695/#Comment_607695

18. Adventure Y will use the same ruleset as BG:EE and BGII:EE i.e. you can play all three parts with the same character.

- The Bhaalspawn left Baldur's Gate and travelled to the south. Why? Why did he have to leave?
- This will indeed be explained. One more thing, Bioware kept notes on what happened after BG1 and why the characters ended up where they appear at the start of BG2. Just saying, we're not exactly guessing here.

http://www.rpgcodex.net/forums/index.php?threads/beamdogs-adventure-y-interquel-set-between-bg1-and-bg2.96369/page-2#post-3684770

19. David Warner (Irenicus's voice) comes back.

http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/comment/492571/#Comment_492571

20. Trent Oster talked again about the domain buying habit after an idea that the main quest in the Adventure Y will be the Siege of the Dragonspear Castle - the same thing happened with the IWDEE domain.

21. A hint that the Dynaheir's quest about the Bhaalspawn will be in the Adventure Y.

"You'll note that this doesn't preclude her from searching for Bhaalspawn other than the PC or Sarevok."

http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/comment/599446/#Comment_599446

22. The period between BG1 and BG2: it's one year.

BG1 starts on the 1st of Mirtul, 1368. BG2 SoA starts on the 1st of Mirtul, 1369. This means that BG1 (and adventure Y) is supposed to take a year (according to the games chronology).

Given that the Bhaalspawn crisis is supposed to be over in 1369 I think if anything there is more leeway in terms of having a game set between the two games, compared to having it set between Shadows of Amn and Throne of Bhaal."

http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/comment/607846/#Comment_607846

23. The UI in Adventure Y will be previoosly unseen one, but will include all the enhancements Beamdog made to BGEE and IWDEE.

It comes from the leaked screenshots (now edited out)

http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/comment/565436/#Comment_565436

24. There will be both absolutely new locations and remastered and repainted areas from BG1 in Adventure Y.

It again comes from the leaked screenshots (now edited out)

25. There will be new abilities for characters (at least one that looks like a transformation into a goblin) and/or a goblin companion.

It again comes from the leaked screenshots (now edited out)

26. Developers think that a price of 17 USD at least would be fair

buahahaha

27. How about a SoA->ToB expansion?

If Adventure Y is a success I would like to do a SoA->ToB expansion. This isn't a guarantee or promise, but rather something I'd (Phillip Daigle) personally like to do.

What is the value of gold in FR?

$

I want to understand the value of money in Forgotten Realms.

For example: if we consider, that 1(one) gold per night in the inn without any comfort is NORMAL, what are normal costs for other things? Can it be a starting point, a basic unit? How much is the fish))?
But... in the same inn the cheapest ale also costs 1 gold. I don't think they are equivalent. For this reason, one night must cost about 4-5 gold.

Let it be ok. But we can see, that same persons drink every day. Let us assume, they drink 3 ales per day. With one vaction day in a decade. In this case, they spend 81 gold per month for booze. At the same time, they also must carry about families and work somewhere. So, their monthly paiment must be over 150-200 gold.
How much a common farmer can gain in a month in FR, does anybody knows?

And if we compare this to a true medival? What was a price for a common sword in relate of monthly income of a medival citizen?

If we meet Scar for the first time we enter Baldur's Gate, he offers us 2000 gold for the hard quest. I think, that must be very much, but by this time we have cash ten times bigger... And his money are no sense for this mission. We even couldn't buy any usefull stuff in exchange. So, the amount of gold, that may intrigue us, must be about 10000 gold or larger. But isn't this the same sum, that Flaming Fist officer earns for whole year? Or not?...
