Plotbreaker and Friends

Once upon a time, Necomancer posted this thread which I became a very active participant of. I said there I might come back and do Watcher's Keep... and I have. Unlike the SoA story which was a clusterfuck of improvisation, I have all the WK episodes finished even as I type this post up. Today I'm posting the intro and then one every day. Probably early in the morning CET.

Okay, now for the people who have NFC what I'm talking about. Plotbreaker and Friends is what I'm calling my story of a PnP SoA party with... different interests. I decided that with 19 SoA episodes, more to come with Watcher's Keep and perhaps even more with Throne of Bhaal, my story has earned its own thread. I've also taken the time to format all the old posts and polish them a little - there's a changelog further down so old readers don't need to scan for changes.

Anyway, the first party member is Tepp Resolox, sorcerer. His name is an anagram of plot exposer. The second is the human thief Sendany Mayocomb, whose name is an anagram of obeys any command. Lastly there's Luna Wafall (tall race) the cleric, anagram of lawful anal. I am quite fond of anagrams and I enjoy names that employ them, but do not expect the characters to perfectly (or perhaps even remotely) represent them.

And now the changelog for returning readers. It's small and rather unexciting. I've changed some lines that didn't feel appropriate and nitpicked myself in some places. I've added the meeting with Drizzt, but it's not particularly entertaining. And lastly, Tepp should no longer in any way flirt with Luna and Luna should no longer in any way kick him in the balls. Above all I would have preferred to have done this way different from the start, but what's done is done and I don't have a fraction of the energy to redo everything - it's way beyond what you could call editing. But enjoy!

EE/SCS/no-reload challenges #1: What is a solid way to not die to a Beholder?

$

With the current BG2EE build and current SCS, how can I reliably NOT be killed while attacking beholders and elder orbs?

- assume no Shield of Cheese [I mod it out]
- assume full party [pick any NPCs] - bonus points to do it wihout a Berserker
- if helpful, assume mage variant PC [Sorcerer, F/M etc.]
- assume that you start in sight of the Beholder (i.e. no sending summons without risk)

--
[Note: I heard that Spell Shield used to protect against Beholder antimagic rays? Is that true? How about Spell Immunity: Abjuration? How about potions to lower saves? But what about an elder ord casting Imprisonment (and without a Rage available)? etc. etc.]

Proceed.

This little thing is very nice. Not only you can get an evil planetar/deva if you are good (and you can cast it even after removing curse the helmet off of you...), but it also changes the familiar you get! Being chaotic good and all, while wearing it, i summoned... an imp! Instead of the fairy dragon. Has anyone else noticed other aftereffects while wearing it?

Asking for help making a Blade portrait. (I can't photoshop)

Hey, everyone! It's been awhile. I'm getting back into Baldur's Gate after finishing IWD:EE, and want to make a kick-ass Blade. I know who I want the portrait to be of, (an actress in a show) but I can't find any good pictures of her that aren't a bad angle or low quality.

Her name is Victoria Smurfit, and she plays a vampire hunter in the 2013 show Dracula called Lady Jayne Wetherby. I have an imgur page with a bunch of snapshots I took from the first season episodes. If anyone can help me take a good picture where she has a victorian dress on, and photo-shop a katana in her hands, I would love you forever.

I asked on reddit a couple hours ago, but I don't think many people there really want to do a Baldur's Gate photoshop request, heh. Not a priority. http://imgur.com/efef06Z That one got solved in 13 minutes. Cuz, you know. Hawt girl.

Thanks in Advance!

Here's my imgur page with lots of Lady Jayne: http://imgur.com/a/5uCUG

Future potential projects: IWD2:EE, PS:T:EE & BG3 - your opinion

i post this thread in response to trent oster's interview http://www.rpgamer.com/games/icewind/icewindee/icewindeeint.html - pls read it first, there the problematic nature of making IWD2:EE and PS:T:EE is brought up

In my opinion Beamdog should make all three games in the following order:
1. develop the 'Infinity Plus Engine, 3E' for IWD2:EE and release it first
2. completely remake PS:T in this new engine (yes, with 3E rules)
3. make BG3 in the same 3E engine

My reasoning for the above:
1. you'll have to do step 1 if you ever want to get IWD2:EE out >>> no other way around it
2. 2E in Torment doesn't work: the ruleset is unnecessarily complicated since the tactical aspect of the game is very straightforward >>> 3E is more straightforward and would suit the game much better (so the engine developed for IWDII:EE should be used)
3. 3E is better than 2E overall and interesting features presented in IWD2 are unused there and in IE games in general >>> making BG3 in 3E instead of 2.5E would make it a better and fresher game

THE ACTUAL POLL QUESTION: What should be the general course of further development and should Beamdog use (the hypothetical) 'Infinity Plus Engine, 3E' in any subsequent projects? (the poll options suggest the answer to this as well)
Simple english - what should beamdog make in the future?

***however*** the questions of whether and how they should make IWDII:EE and the order in which the games should be made/released is not included, because it is a less contentious of an issue i suppose.

I have never seen a translation of the video Game into Pin and Paper. Always wanted to do that myself but as it would detail me going back though the game and playing it again (some 200+ hours) and taking notes I have not. Would be a rather crazy campaign, if I recall they got sicking powerfull in the end. Least my dude did, but he was a fighter/mage.

Did not have Vivionca with my party at the time we met Drizzit. Seems that her and the Palidian had an issue outside the cave of that abnormally large red dragon in BG2. The fight resulted in said palidian going all bad ass on the drow chunking her. Then I went all bad ass (I'm thinking Slayer as well) and whooped the Palidian's sorry ass. Had to reload and find new allies at that point, so I think I went and got Jaherida back. I need the stupid Palidian for some reason I don't know why so his self righteous ass got to stay.

Latter when we found Drizzit and fought with him in the Vampire Lair, one of the Vampires charmed Minc (Just not one of the worlds deepest thinkers) and he was standing next to the famed drow.

Now folks I know he is supposed to be the greatest swords men in the Realms, but he was no match for our mighty Minc. "BUT KICKING FOR GOODNESS!" Drow chunks everywhere when Minc got done.

We took out his crew (Cati, Brewner etc) wile fending off the Vampires. I felt so bad that I had to reload and do the hole mission over again, this time protecting Minc from doing the same thing. :joy:

Neera's Romance: Is it worth it? (no spoilers)

What the title says. I stopped playing BG and coming to the forums for a few months but now I'm back and would like to know if the Neera romance is good. It's just that from what I read of it in a playthrough of SoA I dropped is that she is Chaotic Neutral for a reason.
She basically does what the f*** she wants and I stopped right about when she talks about a relationship she enjoyed but left one day, with no previous notice whatsoever, because she just felt like it!
Now, just for additional information's sake, the only romance I did was Aerie, but I did Viconia's until ToB but stopped due to a nearly gamebreaking bug, so that one is on hold (and the only thing I'm doing Viconia's romance for is to witness what happens in ToB and how the character remains in the aftermath).

Party of how many people do you find the most difficult to play in a no-reload/min-reload runs?

Finally playing SoA!!

The reason I joined this forum just over a year ago was to see if we could get action on the missing Mac patch, without which the game help too much risk to be playable for me (save game corruption bugs).

So finally, after a 15 month wait, 1.3 is out and I am finally playing. Just want to say a big thank you to the team for persevering through the Mac App store process and finally getting this to us - I know you are probably as frustrated as we customers that it took this long to get the working game in our hands, so I'm happy for all of us that it is out!

So this is a post for anyone who has been following along with me these long months, to see how I am getting on now the game is available.

The sad news is that after 15 months of anticipation, I was finally worn out a week or two before it finally shipped - I am really happy to have this in my hands, but you can only hold the excitement for so long. However, I feel a sense of duty to at least finish a play through after investing so much time into the game, and it is slowly dragging me back into the mood, kicking and screaming. At the end of the day, SoA is a great game, and even a jaded curmudgeon like myself is going to enjoy themselves if they give it only a fraction of a chance.

And a fraction is what I gave it. After so long playing many characters through BG, the 'current' play through when SoA landed for me was one of the sillier power-plays. This is one of two characters I decided to go all out godly on and enabled the console (briefly) to Ctrl-8 in character creation. A second red flag is that I played him through the first Black Pits before starting BG, hearing that he will keep xp over max, but not get to spend it until SoA. Given I am shooting for a Cleric->Mage dual, this should have landed me in SoA with just enough XP to dual at 11th, leaving Irenicus dungeon. 11th is a magical level for a cleric of helm - not only do you get your first 6th level spell, but you also get a second use of the funky sword ability. That will be critical to my plans, as it gives me 3 attacks/round, which doubles to 6 with improved haste, which I should be able to cast myself. 6 APR is not bad for a non-fighter, with a 19 str (almost certainly 25 with cleric boosts) and +3 weapon that should hit most things. Note the 'should' have that xp leaving chateau Irenicus. In fact, on starting SoA I had just over 180k xp, a far cry from where I expected to be, and less than leaving the Black Pits. That raised red flag 3 - having planned to leave this chapter dualed and starting over as a mage, I enabled console again to give my character enough xp for 11th at the start of the dungeon, before disabling the console again. 3 red flags kills a lot of satisfaction with my play through, and is mostly a sign of the fatigue of waiting so long, building and dashing hopes for so many PCs...

So griping aside, how am I getting on with the game? Dualing at 11th has given an interesting game to be sure. Taking down the lightning imps at the start of the game with just a first level mage and Imoen was surprisingly difficult. My intent is always to solo/duo the first level with Imoen to max out xp, and then recruit everyone when Yoshimo comes aboard. While I had plenty of xp, I had no kit, THAC0 or AC so the early levels were hard, despite frequent leveling. 4th level spells were also hard to come by, so those slots sat empty when I finally rested. OTOH, using DUHM as a bhaalspawn power, starting from 19 con (all stats 19, except 21 Wis) means a total heal when I rest, and I have 2 cure light's spare for Imoen.

NPC levels is where life gets interesting. Imoen and Yoshi start with 161k xp, while Misc comes with 800k xp! IIRC, Jaheira had around 400k, more than Imoen but a lot less than Minsc. Given my character is playing a CN (trying to be LG, Guy Gardner wannabe, if you know the comics) then Minsc is actually the only member of this initial party in my long term plans, that finally fill the party with Minsc, Anomen, Jan, Neera (continuing romance from BG) and Haer'Dalis. The early game is frustrating as I want to gain as much xp as possible by doing every characters quest line, so I figure that Haer'Dalis will be last to join, and I will try to do everything by swapping an 'active' orcharacter in his slot till each quest is done. The first issue is that it takes forever to complete enough of Jaheira's quest line to drop her - defined as besting Galvarey to win a particularly useful ring. By the time I am dropping Jaheira, my rep is getting dangerously high for recruiting evil NPCs for their quests. Luckily my original plans were to use Korgan alongside Minsc in the front line, but he was just too fractious so ultimately has been replaced with Anomen - but his quest line completed early. Likewise, we grab Hexxat early as her recruitment mission has a nice container for the party to keep. But keeping rep low enough to recruit Hexxat for her next couple of quests skewed the missions I might take, and likewise it took forever before I was ready to look into Edwin, so he has been dismissed with his nether scroll, which is still 'his' as he has not yet read it. Naturally, Keldorn was reunited with his family and will not be seen again, much like Jaheira who was not best pleased to make way for another after standing up to the Harpers.

But now I finally have my final party together, having done all NPC content that I expect to other than Mazzy (and maybe a quick trip with Nalia) and the fun is really starting to come back. That said, the party is just topping out the fun zone levels - Neera just hit level 15, and is 300k xp away from level 8 spells. The Gardner himself (my PC) is just 20k or so away from level 7 spells as I write this. Minsc just scored 2.1M xp for level 15, and is looking to see if he can reach his first HLA before we sail for spell hold. I have just completed the planar sphere, now my stronghold, and still have 3 major quests to go, plus Bodhi to confront, so we'll see (the Unseeing Eye, and both dragons). I can also look forward to the Twisted Rune, several liches (including Kangaxx) and a deep plunge into Watcher's keep. The plan for the godly play through was to make it to the stat boosts of Lum the Mad before spell hold, but I have never been below the second level before (and that was over 10 years ago!)

The oddest thing I have had to come to terms with is NPC xp. As I said, Minsc arrived with 800k, as did Neera, Hexxat and Rasaad. Nalia I recruited much later, but has only 400k, as did Haer'Dalis despite being almost the last recruited. I have had to painstakingly play Jan up from 161k xp, despite others joining with 800k at essentially the same time. Having deferred on Valygar till taking on the planar sphere, he came with 1.2M xp, but that was appropriate for the party by that point (replacing Haer'Dalis with 1.08M at the time). So NPC xp seems highly variable, and waiting a while before recruiting your long-term NPCs might make a positive difference. I suspect some of the NPCs picked a starting level from my dualed (inactive) cleric level, while others were acting on my active Mage level, or some kind of party average.

Anyway, that is 2-3 weeks progress playing since the patch shipped, and it looks like I will be at least another month on this play through, especially as I will finally hit the parts I have never played (lower Watcher's Keep, and ToB). I suspect I will be quiet around here until I have completed said play through - and if you are still reading at this point, what one earth are you doing spending so long in this forum when Faerun is out there, waiting for you, just one more time...

"Maybe this time" [EE/SCS/trilogy/no-reload runs] (Entries Welcome)

In the depths of the old bioware forums, there are arcane threads hundreds of pages long and eons old that recount the travails of countless adventurers that tried to get through the entire trilogy without reloading. There are also already several excellent threads by @semiticgod @Blackraven and many others detailing their no-reload challenges.

I suggest that we share our no-reload/trilogy attempts in a common thread. Bioware forums show that there is synergy in such combined threads that keep solidarity far beyond the attempts of single adventurers.

Here are the suggested rules for a trilogy run [adjust to taste]:

1. no-reload [otherwise, there is no point]

2. SCS
[I recommend the following setup for both BGEE/BG2EE: full AI improvements; improved encounters only without rule-changes to monsters; NO insta-buff mages -- full SCS *will* kill you, if not trimmed as such reasonably.]
(SR would be great, but it is still in beta.)

3. no "munchkining" [personal taste, of course]
a. fair rolls for stats [i.e. don't touch the +/- buttons; re-roll if you want to]
b. no meta-game abuse [e.g. using a thief to scout is fine, but don't buff up for an ambush you couldn't have known about]
c. no EEkeeper abuse [I like making my FMC human for flavor, but it is perhaps overkill to make a Dwarven Defender/Mage with +++++ in Axes...]

4. Any party size, solo or full team. Role play strongly-encouraged (and without such a gameplay theme, I loose interest in my own runs usually).

Personally, in a decade of trying, I never finished a trilogy run (although did get as far Ch. 3 in BG2). I have seen others succeed in completing, so it is surely possible.

Entries welcomed!

Epiphany: Best thing for Beamdog to do: 1.IWD2EE -> 2.new 3E adventure

$

3E is the best of the D&D sets for a CRPG (or rather 3.5E is). No contest.

IWD2 was the best of the Infinity Engine games when it comes to balance and design. It definitely deserves an EE treatment.
But it lacks two specific very important things:

1. No Epic Story! (Bhallspawn saga tied the BG series together in a way that IWD1/2 never had.)
2. No SCS. (Seriously, without good AI a sophisticated game system is useless!)

Challenge to Beamdog:

- Sell us IWD2EE (develop a good frigging AI for it this time though, please, unlike the IWDEE)
- use that version of the engine to sell us a new game (I'm willing to pay $40 for a full adventure.)

Dialogue-pickpocket trick, bug or an "RP feature"

$
0
0
As many may know, after finishing the dialogue with an NPC, this NPC will "focus" on the character which initiated the dialogue for a few seconds(you can walk in circles around the NPC and she/he/it will turn with you). During this time, a PP attempt from another character(I always do it with another character for RP purposes, which I explain latter) won't turn the NPC hostile even if it fails(and you can try many times: pause-try, pause-try, etc).

This is how I'm ALWAYS :D getting some awesome clock on my no-reload runs, as soon as Imoen gets 50 in PP.

Obvious exploiting, right? True. However, it's brilliant from RP perspective: one is distracting, another is "working". Am I right? Am I right?

So, what's your take on this? Aye or nay? :)

The Tale of Euphonia the Half-Elven Skald, and her search for the Holy SCS No-Reload Grail

$

Although I had decided a few weeks back that I'd take a break after Glorydd, I found myself remarkably eager to roll a new character to wash away the foul taste in my mouth left by the Dwarf's death.

This character became Euphonia, Half-Elf Skald. Conceptually it's one of my favorite classes, but my performances with Skalds have been less than stellar. Euphonia's my fourth. Ocker the Dwarf fell to Shoal's (ranged!) kiss of death, Nereniel the solo Skald died against Drasus & co, and an undocumented, non-optimized Skald was drowned by a Water Weird. So I'd say expect little, and who knows she might surprise you all ;)
image
As you can see I got a very nice roll and went with optimized stats, because I think I may need every benefit I can get. Euphonia will journey with (like-minded) companions; besides her kit a second aspect of this playthrough that doesn't bode well for Euphonia hehe.

As always, I play with Rogue Rebalancing, the implications of which can be learnt here: http://readme.spellholdstudios.net/rr_core.html#Bard_kit_revisions.

Euphonia started her adventure with a Wolfskin Bag to store items in, and with a Pseudo-Dragon Familiar, Fluister. Fluister, encouraged by Euphonia's song and Swashbuckler Imoen's arrows was instrumental in the girls' first careful steps toward Sword Coast heroism. In the Red Canyons for example, it knocked a Wolf unconscious (allowing the girls to save Melicamp and seeing him restored by Thalantyr), and it even slew a Dread Wolf.
imageimage
In Nashkel the familiar tanked a Baby Wyvern and killed an assassin who was after Euphonia.
imageimage
At the Friendly Arm Inn Fluister made Tarnesh pay for injuring Euphonia and Imoen, with his life.
imageimage
And near the High Hedge it knocked out various Gnolls for the girls.
image
This is not to say that the girls didn't do any hard work themselves. They slew a rogue Ogre, four Huge Spiders, and two Ogrillons themselves.
imageimageimage
At the Nashkel Carnival, Euph and Imo pawned an enchanted Ring they'd found at the FAI. This transaction, artifiaclly high Charisma, and a heroic reputation allowed the girls to purchase the Fragment of Enlightenment Ioun Stone (+20 Lore) for the Bard and a suit of Caster's Chain (AC 5, allows spell casting), and the Deep Red Ioun Stone (+1 Dex) for the Thief. Both Short Sword wielding rogues are now level 4, and discussing Keldath's request to clear Mutamin's garden, before any other NPCs are to be recruited.

Nashkel Mines Tactical Map

$

0
Assuming the standard 1" = 5' grid, does anyone have an idea of the map sizes for the levels in the Nashkel mines? My friend and I are contemplating running our game group through the mines tabletop style using Dwarven Forge terrain pieces, but I have no idea how big to make the mines. I tried mapping them by moving my characters through them, but it very quickly becomes an incredibly daunting task (especially since you can't rotate the map). I figured that the entrance to the first level is about 20' wide and about 50' long before it begins to open up into the main cavern area and branch off to the left and right. I wish there was a way to toggle a grid (the way you can in Civilization for instance).

Anybody have any suggestions (I know I can just ballpark it, but I'd like to get fairly close to an accurate scale)?
