Tell a joke thread. Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale and D&D related jokes

An idea of this thread has come into my mind recently.

So, let's go!

1. - Did you hear my friend John has been fired?
- Yep, I've just heard it. Apparently he's failed a save, or something.

2. - What is the most useless thing in the world?
- The ring of infravision.

3. [spoiler=because of the size]

(from http://www.ironworksforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2043):

There are three Flaming Fist Mercenaries on horseback out in the river bottoms. As they are riding along a small wounded gibberling runs out in front of them. It stops and turns their way.

The poor gibberling was mortally wounded (slash through the midsection by a long sword +1).

This was no oridinary gibberling, it spoke Common. The three FF mercenaries were astonished and dumbfounded when they heard this.

The gibberling said, "If you help me, I will grant you three wishes, or if you kill me a great death will come upon you."

The FF mercenaries decided to take the lawful way, and help out the poor monster. They took it to the local healer (Temple of Helm) and he gladly helped out anything in need.

After it was all cleaned up it was about to leave. Than it turned to the FF mercenaries and said, "about the three wishes, you must split them up between you; only 1 wish apiece."

The FF mercenaries were not happy; they thought they were getting 3 wishes apiece. The mercenaries were all different in one way. One of them was very fat, the other was a tall and skinny man, and the last was small and fat.

The gibberling then said, "I can see that you are not happy with my decision, but I will give you two days to decide." Once you have decided I will be waiting here for you," said the gibberling.

The mercenaries left and talked on their way back to their houses. "I dont think that is fair, we cared for that little beast and this is how it repays us," said the fat one. "Yea, I say we get the wishes and then we kill it for sport," said the tall one. The small and plump one was happy unlike the others, because he was a poor halfling with a bad house and job (being a FF mercenary must suck).

As they split up to go their seperate ways they waved good-bye. The tall one went to the left, fat one the middle, and halfling the right.

The next morning the local town crier was distributing the newspaper called the Elven Classic. The fat and halfling mercenaries met in the town square where he was. They asked for a newspaper to check out teh local problems. There on the front page, read in large letters "FLAMING FIST MERCENARY MURDERED"

At the site of this, the fat and halfling mercenaries started to panick. They went to their friends house.. and to their suprise there were many guards out in front. They went up and asked one of them what had happened here. He said that the FF mercenary inside was murdered during the night. They said his head was shoved though a wall with slash marks over his body. The FF mercenaries were scared out of their wits that they ran all the way back to the town square.

By this time it was turning darker, and the sky turned a deeper blue. "I better get home soon, incase my wife needs me," said the fat one. The halfling split up and went his own way to his house. As he entered the door he locked it and checked all the windows. He got in bed with his sword and shield by his side. He got up in the morning to find his body was still intact. He went outside with his armor on. He then went to the town square to meet his friend.

Today was the day he would get his wish he thought as he headed to meet his friend. He arrived and did not find his friend inside the town square. There the town crier was selling more newspapers. The halfling bought one and AGAIN on the front read "ANOTHER FLAMING FIST MERCENARY MURDERED".

The little halfling was shocked and at this he ran over to his friends house. There in front were some more guards. He couldn't believe that his only friends had been murdered by some beast. He than thought of the Temple of Helm and his wish. He ran over there as fast as he could. There just as he said so the gibberling had waited for them.

"Where have you been, its late in the day and I must get going," said the gibberling. "Sorry to be late, but my friends were murdered in the night," said the Halfling. "Sorry to hear that *snicker* *snicker* I hope you are ready for your THREE wishes now that your friends are gone," replied the gibberling. "Really!? I get three wishes now! Cool!," said the halfling.

At that the halfling used up two of his wishes, one on a new house and the other on the strongest shield and sword in the land. On his last wish he thought very hard, and decided to bring his friends back from the dead. At these last words the gibberling casted the spell/wish and his friends appeared in front of him. Just as he did this the gibberling said his good-byes.

He ran off down the ridge and over the hill out of sight. The halfling asked his friends if they were feeling ok. They replied in unison,"We are fine, but we still remember what killed us. In the faint shadows we could see that it was a small beast the size of a gibbe...OH MY GOD! YOU LET THE BEAST GO!!!."

At those words, they glanced the way that the gibberling had ran. "Do you think the wound that that gibberling had was from a sword of an unhappy customer?" said the Halfling. "We shall never speak of this again," they all said together. Was it the gibberling who had done the carnage? Or was it another monster still lurkering in the city limits?

Since the latest patch came out, I'm finally dedicating the amount of time needed to go through BG:EE. I'm playing modless, but on insane difficulty. In the past, I've usually reloaded on level up to get max HP on every character. However, this time through, I'm trying to do minimal reloads, and am taking the first HP rolls I get. Well I've had horrible luck. Dorn is level 4 now and has only 20 HP, Rasaad is level 4 and I think he only has 17.

I really think randomizing the amount of HP gained is such a stupid rule for a game that is so heavily combat focused. I wish it was just a set amount of HP received no matter what. Ya I could reload to get max HP like I have usually done in the past, but I always felt dirty when doing it.

Do you guys usually reload to get max hp?

Doing zero damage

You guys may have noticed I that like unconventional playthroughs.

Right now I'm thinking about trying one where I do zero damage -- all kills will have to happen via death magic, stat drain, level drain, imprisonment, or petrification (et cetera?). I might start with SoA, because I can't think of a way to get past Mulahey in BG1.

The only methods I know for lowering stats without doing damage are Ray of Enfeeblement and Contagion. Anyone know anything I'm missing, or have other ideas? I expect success to depend heavily on enemies' (particularly bosses') immunities, and I'm not very knowledgeable about those.

Soo if you take Daystar for example, is it:

a) 1d8 + 4 damage vs evil, or
b) 1d8 +2+4 damage vs evil (in other words 1d8+6) ?

Also, if it says "double damage", does it mean that:

a) base 1d8 damage is doubled (aka 2d8)
b) the bonus damage is also doubled (aka 2*(1d8+2))
c) everything (including STR bonus) is doubled?

Just thought this might be a fun topic to post. While playing the BG saga, do you have any personal canons about certain elements in the story? For instance, I am of the belief that Amylessan is Imoen's mother, though they both don't know it. There isn't any evidence supporting this but neither is there any evidence completely rejecting the idea. To me it just adds more to the story.

Yours?

shadowdancer lore

I was planning to do a shadowdancer in my next run of baldur's gate.

But I could not find too much information about it on the net.

I wanted to know if the shadowdancer had to learn his ability or it is innate like the sorcerer?

Is it tied to mask or shar? Or can you become one on your own?

This is roleplayer question, just to flesh out my character.

So if @LadyRhian or anyone else who know about shadowdancer can help me that will be great.

Dragon Disciple in BG2:EE

Ok, so in BG:EE, Sorcerers got a kit.

And it was cool. Dragon Disciple trades one casting of your level 1/2/3/4 spells per day in return for -2AC, 50% Fire Resistance, +1 con (which isn't really a big deal on mages), better hit dice, and the breath. Basically, a slightly less capable Sorcerer that compensates with slightly better natural defenses and a nifty ability. All in all, this is a fairly even trade in BG:EE, maybe even slightly in the favor of the Kit over the vanilla Sorcerer.

But with BG2:EE on the horizon, a lot of things change. In mid-late SoA and especially in ToB, AC becomes less and less important defensively - enemies with very low, even negative THAC0 and decent APR start to become common. The extra HP from those early levels might save you - from about one additional attack when enemies regularly hit for 20+ damage. And now you're not giving up just low-level spell slots, you're giving up an extra Time Stop or Improved Alacrity, Horrid Wilting or Power Word: Blind, etc.

In short - what is the Dragon Disciple going to get to compensate for the loss of those oh-so-incredible high-level spell slots? I hope it's something beyond further Fire Resistance/AC/Breath Weapon progression!

Any ideas on what D&D game Beamdog may work on next? :)

I'd hope for:
Icewind Dale 2
and maybe Pool of Radiance 2 (the Atari one)

I like how they had quasi 3rd ed rules which for me are way better than the very limited 2nd ed rules, as I like playing stealthily and allowing melee classes more fun abilities than just "smack! smack!"
Despite the fact that I favour playing wizards I find just mere hit point damage as being all melee characters could do *innately* as incredibly tedious, and so wrong (combat is very fluid, 4th ed over complicated in ways but melee classes should be able to MOVE enemies in combat as it did).
And 1st/2nd ed stealth rules *suck* :( Flat percentage, though DMs had optional and very poor rule to adjust for enemy Hit Dice, was just rubbish (and hey I'm a DM and used to adore playing 1st/2nd ed...until their limitations bugged me to hell.)
Also, "feats" and skill sets are vastly better ways to do things than "proficiencies".

and these games would need and deserve major re-workings/improvements IMHO to make them into more modern graphics:
~Eye of the Beholder (which got me into computers, not just "gaming" thanks to my dear old Amiga)
~The Dark Sun games, VERY under appreciated classics, IMHO!

And well of course: Planescape Torment ;)

I'm sure some folks would love to see the eerie Ravenloft games re-done as well :)

A *PROPER* Neverwinter Nights 3 would rock of course but "sword Coast Legends" will kind of fill that gap a bit?

Portraits for BG from Pillars of Eternity

In the latest Pillars of Eternity update we finally got a character portrait in a good resolution. It looks gorgeous!

So, no doubt about it: when Pillars of Eternity are out, portraits from that game will more than suit BG.

By the way, the name of this portrait is "pe_portrait_female_human_580" which leads me to dream that we'll have MANY portraits in Pillars of Eternity for PCs and NPCs.

Timeline Shenanigans

I know I am getting into a quagmire here but I just noticed today the continuity for Forgotten Realms versus the BG/IWD games is wrong/off, creating a bit of a continuity snarl here.

The Time of Troubles (the transition from 1ed to 2ed) happens canonically in 1358 DR. Gods walk the world, a score of them are brutally murdered, others are eaten by other gods, and Bhaal makes sure he has lots and lots of baby making sex before he is cut down.

Fast forward 10 years and Sarevok (who must be in his 30s?) is terrorising the Sword coast and BG1 takes place in 1368 DR (a year later BG2 happens). CHARNAME is also supposed to be 20.
Even the book is off here as Abdel Adrian (who is of an age with Sarevok) was a thing we want to forget.

Additionally IWD takes place in 1291. Prior to the Time of Troubles, so really ought to have been operating under 1ed rules not 2ed.

Has anyone else noticed this? Or cared? lol.

The weirdest place to put your toilet in?

For me it's the one in Chateau Irenicus. Right between the library and the hallway to the otyugh pit.
I don't know about you but I would hate for my goblin slaves to interrupt me while I'm doing my business. That otyugh-odour would also make it even more foul than the worst back-alley tavern you can think of.
And it's right within reach of those 2 annoying mephits too! Who knows what kind of pranks they are up to?

So what's your favourite place to not put a toilet?

They all get new portraits and I would like to know which you prefer: The original ones or the sequel ones.

So I've been offline for a while and all of a sudden I see something about a new BG game beamdog has got in the works. I heard it was set in between the 1rst and 2nd game. That sounds rather odd considering the second picks up right after the first. But I wanna know what you guys know or speculate (:

Charnames Mother [SPOILER] and Gorion

$
0
0
Good day - I feel chatty today, sorry =P
Also, full of Spoilers about BG1 AND BG2:ToB, read only if you finished those.. =P

The background of charname always annoyed me a bit.
In BG1 Gorian claims that charnames mother was a former lover of him and Bhaal forced himself upon
the women.
The Solar in ToB says (If I remember correctly) that charnames mother was a priest of Bhaal who didn't..
realy mind Bhaals advances..

Soo I thought of a theory (which could be a completly old news..):
Both is true (shock!) in a way. Gorion is a good natured Harper, he found a dark women fights her and beats her.
The following time he tries to convert her to the good side and seemingly succeds. She becomes a Harper
spy within the temple of Bhaal (and Gorions lover). In truth, she never converts to ...whatever good god the
Harpers like and instead is a double-agent, feeding false information to the Harpers (but with enough truth in
it, so the Harpers don't realise it.. Sacrificing rivals and getting rid of weeklings and such.)
Bhaal comes, she gets pregnant and needs to lie to Gorion about the forcing part (even though Bhaal could have
forced himself on some people, that part is unclear). He believes her and when the Harper raid comes he saves
charname, maybe trying to find the mother but fails (I think it would be pretty chaotic there, so he *might* even
have killed her in the chaos without realising it himself.), thus thinking she died while giving birth.

The second problem is, why did he only save charname?
Well, according to what many other Harpers think, Bhaals essence is corrupting - and all Gorion knew was
that the temple was filled with the childs of Bhaal and his priesthood, evil parents AND evil environment.
So, he (might have) thought that he could save one of them if he concentrated his efforts (and the rest of his
live) on one child and thus he choosed the most promising one: the one of his former lover, the only "good"
mother he knew - he even might have thought himself as the father of charname, since he loved the mother.

So, he didn't abonden the rest out of malice, but of weakness. It is better to take and save one, then take ten
and lose them all...

Well, what do you think of my rambling? I never thought of this myself and also never saw it before, thus
I thought I could post it here.. sorry if other people had this idea before me >_<

Anyways, thanks for your time and have a nice day!
