Little things that annoy you

I has been bugging me for some time: why does the Amaunator avatar give you a shield that belongs to Bane worshippers? It is even called the Saving Grace!

Are there other little inconsistencies in the game bug you?

PS: Hurray my first evil party in BG2, Dorn's wedding crashing ability really lowered my reputation. There seems to be very few banters though.

Hilarious Kivan-Khalid banter

I can't believe I've never seen this banter before:

Kivan to Khalid: "Your courage shames the others."
Khalid to Kivan: "Th-thank you."

I mean, come on! :-D In close competition with Garrick, Khalid has to be the most cowardly NPC in the game. And Garrick is at least not a fighter by profession...

Stats from a roleplaying perspective.

$

Hello once again GD! I'm currently playing through IWD:EE using the wonderful tome and blood mod and when I was making my characters it got me thinking. What do the stats actually mean? My knowledge of D&D in general comes from 3.5, Pathfinder, and 5th edition and there it makes sense. Such as 10 is average, 12 is slightly above average, 14 is good, 16 is great, and 18 is you're a god among men in that stat.

At least that's how I think it is. I may be wrong. Can the same logic be applied to 2nd edition games? I'll use one of my favorite characters, my gnome sylvan sorcereress (It's a fae themed sorcerer introduced in tome and blood) as an example.

I heavily dislike rolling for stats as I usually have a set way I want my character to RP out.

She'd have 10 in strength because while she's not typically weak she's not strong either (average).

She'd have a 14 in dex as she is generally quick on her feet.

10 in Constitution because again she can take a hit but isn't particularly resilient.

16 in intelligence as she had proper schooling and is quite intelligent when it comes to book smarts.

8 wisdom, she might be intelligent but is incredibly oblivious to the world around her. Sort of "In her own little world" situation going on.

18 charisma. Using her adorable personality and charm she can be very convincing and persuasive.

So out of this she only has reduced store prices and and increased lore from her int but then decreased by her low wisdom.

Is this sort of character set up without any particular bonuses or minuses viable and do they make sense from a roleplaying standpoint? When I see characters with more than one 18 I cringe as I feel like they are too perfect.

Also, maybe sorcerer is a bad choice because their spells don't really scale off a certain stat like other casters do but I think you guys get the gist of what I mean.

So I guess to rap things up

TL;DR
Is having 3+ stats in the 16-18 range normal for a character and does the game expect you to be like this or is it more to be a mix of average and slightly high numbers with maybe one or two high stats? Also, can we say that 10 is average, 12 is above average, 14 is good, 16 is great, and 18 is perfect or does 2nd edition scale differently?

Cheesiest of the KenSages

Out of curiosity, I just tried importing my end-of-Black Pits Kensai into the start of BG, and naturally we start the original game with level cap 161k xp. As this PC was always planned as my first censure, I wondered what would happen if I dualled now? As it turns out, I have a 0xp mage with 250k xp in the old class, interesting. I quickly try Fuller's quest to confirm - I am stuck at 0xp and cannot advance this game. Which actually might lead to an interesting play through.

At first, I am OP with way too many hit points to ever really be in danger. Every NPC I recruit will be at 6th level, so we will sail through the early game, all the time becoming increasingly worried that my Bhaalspawns bizarre affliction that they simply cannot learn anything as a mage. Have I doomed my PC to eternal ineptitude, lost to memories of some strange adventure, hounded by a dark elf (that will be an interesting re-encounter!) that seem like a lifetime ago... All growth limited to the 6 bhaalpowers that will ultimately be awarded...

Cut forward to importing into BG2. If I understand correctly, the game still tracks the XP that has not been awarded. Suddenly, the PC springs to life in Chateau Irenicus, the powers truly unlocked by that psychopathic wizard. Suddenly, the story is ripe with possibilities... (and if I do the math correctly, there is a good chance we could even unlock the Kensai abilities, pay-off for having the whole of BG1 as the worst kind of downtime!)

Not committed yet, but this may be my holiday play through.

Here's me killing Niz, the Black Dragon in Suldanessellar.

Apparantly Nightmare mode gives monsters 3 * Normal HP +80, so he should have 680 HP. I managed to deal 686, so that's pretty accurate. The reason I used such cautious tactics was to ensure easy tallying of damage.

Zhurlong's Boots - Things you've never noticed in years of playing

I just noticed you can find Zhurlong's Boots on the Ulcaster Ruins map. Somehow, after years of playing the game, I have never had that happen before. I've since read that in the original BG you could apparently score two sets of boots by going to both locations, but I managed to miss that too. Perhaps it is because I had fallen into a set pattern of play, and lately I've been changing things up to keep the game interesting (I'm trying to finish up all the characters in my save folder before I start any new ones). A fun find, in any case.

I also just recently discovered that people around Baldur's Gate will remark on the player character having discredited and chased off Sarevok at the palace. I've always been so focused on finishing the game at that point that I never bothered to stop and chat. I thought it was a nice touch to have added those extra bits of dialog, even though players like me would likely never think to look for it.

It's nice to find something new after all this time. What unexpected things have you stumbled across lately?

Baldur's Gate & Icewind Dale Jeopardy! (May contain spoilers!)

Dear Ladies and Gentlehamsters,

welcome to the Reverse Question Thread, or
"Baldur's Gate Jeopardy" if you like.

In this thread I want users to provide answers.
But without any questions asked beforehand.

Instead it works the other way around.
You present answers and the others must find
appropriate questions that fit your given answer.

Example: Answer: "Boo"
Possible Questions: "Who's the cutest miniature space giant hamster?"
"What's the name of Minsc's animal companion?"
"What is Oob spelled backwards?"

Please post only one new answer at a time.
However you may post several questions to all answers given so far in this thread.
Answers and questions have to be Baldur's Gate related.

I'll start first:
Answer: "Plug tails"

Now it's your turn to think of questions that fit that answer or to provide
a new answer.

Have fun!

for clarification: You can provide questions to old, given answers as many as you like.
The rule above just says that you must not provide more than one new answer at a time.

for example: You do not always have to provide a question to the latest answer.
Just provide questions to any previous answers you like.

Announcement: With the upcoming Icewind Dale:EE I hereby extend this thread to the Icewind Dale games.

Replaying BG:EE and BG:EE2 with a character, that has completed BG:EE2 earlier

Hello!

I'm not sure what is the right discussion area for this, but here we go.

I'm the kind of a guy, that likes to grind my characters and perhaps the duration of the games is too short for me to grind enough. So i often like playing BG:EE2 just to import character from an older save (BG:EE2) to just start the BG:EE2 again. But i am not sure how well it would work to import character from BG:EE2 to BG:EE? I have used the BG2 Tweak Pack on both games, but i'm still not sure how well the game would work to start the original game again with a character from the sequel. For example, how does the original game handle spells and high level abilities from the sequel? And is there some other stuff that simply would not work when trying to replay like this?

Thank you!

There has been alot of talk about how useless Garrick is because of his horrible stats, and of how much of a coward Khalid is. Which got me thinking...could I do any better than them? So I decided to find a way to put my stats down on paper. I'd encourage other people to try to. It certainly makes me more impressed by the NPCs that I used to somewhat look down upon.

As a reference, I used two tests: http://www.angelfire.com/dragon/terragf/back/xstattest.html

Str: 11
Dex: 10
Con: 12
Int: 17
Wis: 11
Cha: 14

http://www.kevinhaw.com/add_quiz.php

Str 13
Dex 12
Con 12
Int 17
Wis 12
Cha 13

For the sake of my own ego, I'd go with the latter. ;)

Compare my stats to Garrick.

Str 14 (+1 vs me)
Dex 16 (+4 vs me)
Con 9 (-3 vs me)
Int 13 (-4 vs me)
Wis 14 (+2 vs me)
Cha 15 (+2 vs me)

His dex blows mine out of the water. He's stronger than me. Give him a crossbow and he's ok in the back ranks, so his low con isn't much of an issue. As a bard, he's got a good lore score, and he's got a pretty high charisma.

And to compare classes...my guess is that I'd be a fighter/mage. Because I'm a lawyer who is in the national guard. For proficiency points, the D&D equivalent of what I'd have would probably have to go into crossbows and maybe daggers. And yes, my dex score is about right for when it comes to shooting. I qualified with my rifle, but it wasn't easy. I'd pretty much need the gauntlets of 18 dex to be usable, and even then it'd just be as a mage/crossbow user.

The point of all of this? By trying to put myself into their shoes, it just goes to show how extraordinary the majority of NPCs are. And it makes me all the more appreciative of guys like Garrick, who I identify with all the more now.

baldursgate.com has got a redesign. How do you like it?

On January, 30, I've checked that http://icewinddale.com had been changed. Now, http://baldursgate.com has gotten a complete redesign as well.

Among other things, the new site mentions the Adventure Y:

"This year, the eagerly anticipated Adventure Y will finally navigate the dark underground caverns of development and venture out into the Sword Coast. We’ve mentioned before that Adventure Y will be an addition to the Baldur’s Gate line using the Infinity engine, bridging the gap between Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition and Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition. Keep an eye on the Beamblog in late spring for announcements regarding the content and release date of Adventure Y. We have an exciting release planned for this game, something bigger than we’ve ever done before. If you’re looking for more information on Adventure Y, check out these pictures which were mysteriously leaked to the forums."

So, do you like the change of the site? What's your opinion?

I have a problem: I'm in the maze with Hexxat and about to fight against the false lich. All the times I try the fight ends with the lich not destroyed, Hexxat keeps on starting the same dialogue about the Casque not working properly, and I can't open any other door leading me to the end. Can anyone help? Thank you in advance!!!

The Party of Spiders: No-reload SCS2 run

$

I have started a new no-reload run of BG2 with SCS2 installed. I want to see if it's possible to play a melee-oriented party that does not have any fighters in it. So, I will be playing with only spellcasting characters, but I will be trying to use as few spells as possible, and focus instead on melee and ranged combat.

So, no Keldorn, Mazzy, Valygar, Minsc, Jaheira, or Korgan. No Sarevok, either, if I make it to TOB.

The Bhaalspawn in question is Sil, a Human Cleric of Lathander:
17 STR
8 DEX
16 CON
18 INT
18 WIS
10 CHA
She duals at level 11 for the extra casting of Boon of Lathander, which grants +1 to APR, THAC0, damage, and saving throws, stackable (I'll have two castings in total, for 3 base APR). She'll need about 1.5 million XP to get her levels back. That's 3 times as much XP as a Kensai(9)/Mage, so she'll be in pretty bad shape after she hits level 11.

I completed a handful of quests so far. I delayed posting this for fear that I would get killed in Chateau Irenicus.

I have tried a no-reload run of SCS2 once before. Lavok killed me with a Fallen Planetar and Dragon's Breath. Let's hope things go better this time.

What level do you pick up your party members?

In Baldur's Gate the NPCs scale with you (to an extent, I suppose it's more relevant in BG1).

I've always been curious how others go about grabbing their buddies, at first it seems obvious to grab them later, get that sick solo xp then rock out with your brand new "high level" party members...
Bbbbbbbbuuuuuuuuuuttttt they have spent their proficiencies/thief points all wonky and their hp rolls can sometimes be a bit.... :/

So I'm wondering what people do with their npcs (Obvious when they're not soloing :P ). Do you tend to grab them ASAP? Or Grab them later? Or a bit of both? I dunno! I'm curious!

Is Backstab still useful in SCS?

$

0
All of my past parties peculiarly lacked backstabbers, so I'm giving them some regard in my next runs.

In my current one, featuring SCS for the first time, Montaron consistently obliterates everyone, but killing mages is tricky, if not cheesy. I have to position him behind enemy mages before they spot me, and pray that he lands his blow as soon as they turn hostile and before they cast their contingency Stoneskin.

I'm probably playing a Stalker for my next run, which I'll take from Candlekeep to Throne, and I'm already afraid that the SCSII mages will render his signature move useless. Any tips to circumvent them?

What do you think would be a fair price for "Adventure Y"?

$

Note: this poll is only about the most expensive version of Adventure Y i.e. the PC version. Android and iOS versions are generally cheaper.

What is known? Naught but their names. The mage is Jon Irenicus. The girl is Imoen

Adventure Y is a DLC currently developed by Beamdog. It will be about the time between BG1 and BG2 events and will cover the circumstances "much darker than anyone would have thought" under which CHARNAME who had defeated Sarevok and thus had saved the Sword Coast had to escape to Amn and was kidnapped by Irenicus.

It will be released not earlier than spring of 2015.

Adventure Y will have at least one new NPC whose name starts with "Gl". Also, there can be more: "There are a few characters in Adventure Y I'm just in love with. One in particular I plan to use as my next PC if I ever find time to get involved in a p&p game again" (Andrew Foley). Maybe in the future this or these NPC (s) will appear in BG2EE.

The UI in Adventure Y will be previoosly unseen one, but will include all the enhancements Beamdog made to BGEE and IWDEE.

There will be both absolutely new locations and remastered and repainted areas from BG1 in Adventure Y.

Adventure Y (English version) will be voiced-over. We will hear the magnificent Dave Warner's voice (Irenicus) again. Maybe Jennifer Hale will be also involved. Trent Oster mentioned that the price they had to pay for VO was very high.

There will be new abilities for characters (at least one that looks like a transformation into a goblin) and/or a goblin companion.

There will possibly be new kits and spells. And items, of course.

Now, when we know all this, what do you think would be a fair price for such expansion or game (whether it's an expansion or a standalone game, remains to be seen):

Custom PC & NPC Portraits

Building on the original thread, started by @Syntia13, this is intended to be a hub to share alternate, fan-made portraits for the enhanced editions of the series. In order to keep the thread running and make it a comprehensive source for portraits, please abide by the site rules and a few guidelines:

Thread Rules

1: Respect artists' creations and their right to them. If portrait-makers ask that you not edit their work, don't. If a mistake is made, simply edit your post to remove the image, apologize, forgive and forget.
2: Do not share images for which you have not received permission from the artists, when possible.* This is particularly true of art from DeviantArt, which hosts many artists who do not want their work shared elsewhere.
3: If you request that a portrait be made, recognize that the artists in this forum do this simply because they enjoy contributing to the community. Be patient, be respectful and say thank you.
4: Be supportive! Many of the artists here are just beginning to learn how to make portraits. Be positive and constructive in your comments, and avoid pointless negativity.
5: If you are making and posting portraits, state who you used as a model (if applicable), either here or on your website. Understand that this still does not make the likeness your property, and be prepared to remove the image if so requested by the copyright holder.

*Understandably, the source of some older portraits is unknown. If in doubt, go to Google Images and drag the portrait to the search bar. You may find the artist or source through that method. Again refer to Rule 1.

Guide to Using Custom Portraits

Portraits in the enhanced editions use three images in bitmap (.bmp) format, the largest of which is only shown during the epilogue in Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal. The three sizes are 210x330, 169x266 (displayed in the character sheet) and 54x84 (displayed on the right UI bar).*

To use custom portraits for your PC:
1: Navigate to your Baldur's Gate directory in (My) Documents.
2: Drop the custom portraits into the Portraits folder.
3: In the game, select Custom when choosing a portrait and select the medium and small sizes. Alternately, if you have already begun your game, select Customize/Appearance from the character sheet.

To use custom portraits for NPCs:
1: Rename the portrait files to match the NPC whose portraits you want to replace. For example, Jaheira's portraits are named JaheiraL, JaheiraM and JaheiraS. There are some portraits in BG1 that do not conform to this, and those in BG2 have their own naming format. Consult this site.
2: Place the portraits in your override folder, located in the directory where you installed the game.

*Note that after the latest patch, the games allow a single large portrait size to be automatically adjusted to the proper sizes. I currently do not recommend this, as it causes pixelation in the small 54x84 version.

Artist Links

If you like the portraits you see here or at any of the sites below, leave a comment here or on the artist's website. We love making portraits, and we love hearing how you connect to them through the game.
