Some Serious love on the artwork coming out of beamdog

I dont know where these guys get their goods but the cut scene changes (love em) the art work accompanying these games in ads and in the games themselves hold up so well. They capture that artistic style of the infinity engine how you feel like your characters are moving, living, breathing, parts of a great painting. I dont know if they get the stuff from DnD or what but it's great. here's some serious love coming at ya.
When I saw that beholder picture on the website for the first time I almost ducked under my desk out of fear. Thing looks spot on.

Devs -- Please restore spell 'Emotion'

Dear devs,

Please restore the Bioware version of the spell 'Emotion'. Enemies should remain prone for the duration of the spell. The current version of the spell is now weaker than 'Hold Person'.

From http://baldursgate.wikia.com/wiki/Emotion-Hopelessness

Emotion-Hopelessness is a 4th wizard enchantment spell which causes victims to lie down where they stand and cease any movement as effect of losing the will to live if the save vs. spell, fails in their favor.

This spell has a second effect; it instills courage in the caster, restoring lost morale and removing fear effects as well as preventing them from working on the caster for as long as the spell lasts. Magic resistance and other such things affects this part of the spell.

Advice to get better at the game?

I recently finished Icewind Dale and intend to play the Heart of Winter expansion next. Icewind Dale is the first Infinity Engine game I've finished and I finished it on Normal. However, I'm interested in learning more and challenge myself further than that, especially for my playthrough of the HoW expansion, but also for future playthroughs. I'm a huge fan of the Souls series and have done several challenge runs in all three of them, and the Infinity games seem to bear the same potential from what I've seen from solo runs etc.

So what are the best advice you can give to somebody who kind of knows what they're doing, but is not an "expert"? Such as, the most viable party setup, which spells and items to use(potions, arrows, quick-use items etc)for different situations etc.

I am aware that doing successful challenge runs include a great deal of knowledge. However, I'd like this thread to be as spoiler free as possible when it comes to locations of items, but rather be more focused on general and combat advice and minor tips and tricks that takes you farther than the Normal difficulty, and even further perhaps.

Spells for a Dwarven Mage?

$

I want to try a totally new character next time, and after some thoughts I landed on a Dwarven Assassin/Mage. I love poison and backstabs, I love mage spells and I too seldom play dwarves. Yes, I know I'll have to use EEKeeper, but that is fine.

Thorfin will use the Dagger of Venom and the Crossbow of Speed, at least in BG1. I also plan to really use traps for a change. But what spells would a dwarven mage prefer to learn and memorize? Give me your best guesses for BG1 and onwards! :-)

This is the portrait I made for him today. The snapshot was taken by my wife, as usual.

Part 1: Leaving Candlekeep

--------------------

"Again!"

The young dwarf grunted as he was pushed back a step. An older, grayer dwarf snarled as he swung again with his axe.

"Ye call yerself a dwarf? Eh?! Ye weak livered son o' an elf!"

Another blow came crashing down on the shield. The younger dwarf grunted as he planted his feet, using his low center of gravity to keep himself from being pushed back again.

"Oh? So ye're a gnome now, is it?"

The axe fell again. His arm was getting tired. It was getting harder to hold it against the constant blows.

"Ye make me sick! Ye rat bastard. Ye know what I do to-"

Suddenly, the dwarf surged forward, using his shield to hammer a blow into the older dwarf's face. The gray haired dwarf roared in pain as he was pushed back a step himself. The younger dwarf swung out with a hammer, but it was easily batted away.

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa464/grumbaki/Baldurs Gate/IMG_0772.png

The young dwarf, Durak panted as he held the hammer in front of him, ready to swing again. No more than twenty winters old, he was a beardling by any dwarf's standard. An oddity, all things told. While many a shield dwarf grew up within the confines of a human settlement, very few were ever actually raised by a human. For Durak, his foster father was the mage Gorion. A wise, gentle man, Gorion had taken the young dwarf in long ago and over the objections of Ulraunt. While he did all he could to be a father figure, Gorion was still a mage and a man of books. Knowing that young Durak would never follow in his footsteps, he instead shared his training with two others.

Where Gorion did his best to impart a love of knowledge on the young dwarf, Reevor took on the role of a combat master. The old dwarf took to it with relish, treating the beardling like a soldier from his far away clan. Durak was raised in the traditional art of the dwarven defender, to use hammer and shield as if though it were part of his body. In this, he excelled beyond Reevor's wildest expectations. There was a strength in the dwarf that far surpassed his years. He grew up as strong as an ox and as tough as any dwarf had a right to be. Even at the young age of twenty, he was a hearty as a dwarf with a full beard. The more promise that Durak showed, the tougher Reevor became. If it were not for the influence of Gorion, the older dwarf might have truly done his best to break the youngster, just to see if he could. As is, he merely pushed him as far as he reasonably could while still being welcome in Candlekeep.

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa464/grumbaki/Baldurs Gate/IMG_0794.png

Looking at the panting Durak, Reevor had to admit to himself that he was just as tired. Moreso, if he was honest with himself...something he certainly didn't have a mind to be.

"I thought I told you to clean the rats out of this building yesterday, already. Hop to it! Get in there!"

With a nod, Durak did just that. Hefting his hammer, he went to the dire task of using his hammer to clear out a rat infestation, without breaking anything of value. Reevor stood aside as he watched the beardling charge in, a look of pride and jealousy in equal measure written on his face. He knew that Durak would be leaving soon, something he had complained long and loud for ever since he was 'saddled' with the burden of training the beardling. He could hear the sound of the hammer falling and 'squeaks' from within. "I'll miss the wee bastard", he thought to himself.

When Durak came out, a smile not quite hidden from his face, Reevor grunted and tossed him five gold crowns.

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa464/grumbaki/Baldurs Gate/IMG_0795.png

"Ah yes, kill them like the rats they are! A glorious battle unlike this world has ever seen. Here's five gold pieces. Don't spend them all in one place."

With that, a smile truly did break across Durak's face. "Aye! Thank ye!" Reevor knew that the gold would turn to ale soon enough. He successfully fought back the smile.

"Well, what'yre ye waiting for? Ye going to keep Arkanis waiting, ye faerie fondling nitwit?"

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa464/grumbaki/Baldurs Gate/IMG_0790.png

This led Durak to Arkanis' forge. Arkanis was another of his tutors. Where Reevor had taught him the art of dwarven combat, Arkanis had taught him of the forge. It was something that Durak didn't quite take naturally to. It seemed to Arkanis as if though the art of killing ran in the beardlings' blood. His great flaw was that he always swung his hammer as if though he were to kill something. But he did his best, Moradin knew that. So Arkanis toiled away, doing all he could to temper the beardling the dwarven way - with a hammer in hand and an anvil before him.

When Durak came in, he found Arkanis talking animatedly to Deder. One of Arkanis' good friends, Deder was another one of Durak's closest companions. A source of levity in a life full of books, hammers and anvils. It was rare to see the halfling look serious. Durak came to a halt and looked at the pair uncertainly.

"What's the matter? Am I late? I dunnae think I'm late..."

Arkanis looked at Deder and then shook his head.

"Nay, ye're nay late. But...ah, fook it! Lad, ye're leaving. An' shut it when I'm talking, ye hear? Master Gorion says that it's nay safe here for ye. Moradin knows why, but he's told ye to pack up ye belongings an' get to him now."

"But...what? Why? How could it not be safe here? This place is a fortress-"

"Oi! Did I nay say shut it? Look, keep ye shield there. Nay ye worry about Reevor, I'll explain it to him. Now, one last thing. Ye're to get ye arse o'er to the priests' quarters. I've got me war-hammer there. I want ye tae have it. Nay that smithin' hammer ye've been swinging around." He reached over and pulled the light hammer out of Durak's confused hands.

Arkanis then reached out and put a calloused hand on the beardling's shoulder. "Ye take me hammer, an' ye do me proud. Ye remember, that e'ery time ye swing it, ye remember that there best be a reason on why ye're swinging it. Ye dunnae dare disgrace me hammer, ye understand."

"I under-"

"Oi! I said shut it." Deder looked away, suddenly finding something interesting on the wall to look at. "Not get out o' here. An' the next time I see ye...fook it. Jus' go."

Hesitantly Durak nodded, and then ran off. He spared one look back, and was gone.

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa464/grumbaki/Baldurs Gate/IMG_0778.png

When Durak got to the priest quarters, he opened the door and found a hooded man waiting for him. He was sitting in a chair, fingering a dagger.

"Oh goodie goodie! I've gone and found ye first! You are the ward of Gorion, no doubt?"

"I am. What can I do for ye?"

...

Durak was shaking. He looked down at the man's body. He had grabbed the nearest thing at hand - a priest's quarter staff. It was covered in blood. The man had come at him with the dagger. ready to take his life. He wasn't ready for how quick the dwarf was...or how strong. Neither was Durak, truth be told. He reached down and tapped at the man. He didn't move. Slowly he started to accept it. He had just killed someone. Durak thought back to what Arkanis had said. That it wasn't safe here.

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa464/grumbaki/Baldurs Gate/IMG_0781.png

He went and retrieved Arkanis' hammer. He held it in his hands. It felt right. This wasn't a tool for smithing. It wasn't for creating. It was for destroying. It was a tool of death. He stared at the body of the would-be assassin. He didn't want to admit it to himself, but for someone reason it just felt right in his hands.

With that, Durak ran from the quarters, leaving the body lying there. He hoped that Parda wouldn't find it. He didn't know what the kind hearted priest would think if he saw something so gruesome lying there. But at that moment he didn't want to think about that. He just hoped that someone like Hull or Fuller would find it first. They would dispose of it quietly. He hoped, as he ran. He had to find Gorion. Durak didn't understand why this was happening, why someone would want him dead. But he knew that he had to leave.

EEKeeper changing from multi T/I to half orc C/T ?

I'm only level 3/2 on my gnome T/I and I'd like to possibly switch to a T/C without having to redo all this early stuff over again (since I've been through it so many times with different characters as of late... yea yea I know finish a complete play through once already :) Anyway, it seems like using EE Keeper I'd have to know a lot about what to change in order to make the class switch... set the right number of spells etc, proficiencies etc. I guess what I need to do is figure out how many proficiencies, how many spells are available for a C/T at say 2/3 ? I don't want to cheat by giving myself advantage over the stock multi class... am I trying to do something slightly too difficult based on my limited knowledge of what the multi class C/T would have available?

Keeper question: proper way to add innates

$

I wanted to add in the Bhaalspawn powers (SPIN101, etc.) but does the innate tab record your maximum or current? Some characters have an innate by level line on the max memorization tab but that makes no sense for innate as they are memorized individually and not by level. In any event there is no way to add an innate line to the memorization tab; even adding a kit does not do it. And yet I have done this before, so poo.

The most entertaining NPC in the saga

I want you guys/damsels to vote the most entertaining NPC in the saga in your opinion.

You can vote for any NPC be it Bioware, Beamdog or Mod. I will regularly check the topic to update the OP with the votes. I'll do it manually since you can only have 10 poll options.

Note: NPC "enhanced by mods" will still be counted as a vote for said NPC.
Edit: To avoid scattering votes, you can only vote for playable npc!
Stating why you vote for said NPC is most welcome.

NEW IDEA: Add your favorite quote (doesn't need to be 100% exact) from said character.

I vote for Xan thanks to the Xan friendship mod.

At what moments have your no-reload games ended?

So, many people here have done no-reload games. For you, what were the moments where they ended?

For me:

Swashbuckler->Fighter dual. She was going strong, with 5 levels in swashbuckler and then got high enough in fighter to get them back. She was dual wielding two +2 scimitars, which were as good as she was going to get. Then I thought to myself: "You know what she needs? Drizzt's scimitars." I got him down to 'badly injured' before he cut her down. So aye, she got his scimitars. Right to the face.

Berserker->Druid dual. He was going strong. Got all the way to Baldur's Gate. Then I decided to go into the house with all of the helmed horrors and invisible stalkers. I should have paid attention more. I didn't, and he died, thus ending the run.

Berserker->Thief dual. I was trying a solo-no reload run. I took one other PC to try to take down the ogre mage who has the magical helm on the coast...I didn't time my interrupts right with the wand of magic missiles. The ogre killed the second NPC and then charmed my PC. Game over.

So yeah...I've only finished a single no-reload run so far. Those are where my other ones ended. Anyone else care to share their stories of untimely ends?

The Baldur's Gate Soundtrack MIDI Covers

Hi everybody!

This is my attempt to recreate a MIDI mockup of Baldur's Gate videogame soundtrack that I loved so much, starting from simple listening composer Michael Hoenig's OST audio cd.
Everything has been played and recorded entirely by ear, listening and analyzing to the original soundtrack.
The lack of any available orchestral score sheet or midi file (as much as I know) made the task particularly complicated, due to texture complexity of the original arrangements.
Therefore, this work does not claim to be an exact copy, but a cover, played with today's virtual instrumentation technology.
On the other hand, I tried to remain as faithful as possible to the original sound for obvious reasons of loyalty and gratitude to this great soundtrack, as it is.
Analyzing arrangements and instrumentation has been a useful task as well as exciting.
I put all my enthusiasm for this project, hoping that my efforts can be understood in its pure meaning of paying a homage to BG music, which gave me fun, in those years when I was little more than a kid, beginning to approach movie soundtracks.
I apologize in advance for any inaccuracies and possible error in this "impossible mission". I too am a human being with all my own limitations!
Any question or suggestion will be appreciated, feel free to post any comment you want.

What the title says... assume you can only add one kit.

Power play or RP reasons are fine.

I've discounted Dwarven Defender mostly due to the scarcity of Dwarf FMTs, and also the lack of available options... so you can just be angry at me about that if you like...

As I learn more from this forum, I realize how much about the game I didn't know about. There were items, strategies and spells that could have made my life a lot easier against various monsters. There were dialogue options I had never been given. Easter Eggs I never knew about. Etc, etc.

I was interested in seeing this kind of topic ever since my boy @Quartz‌ said that he never made Crom Faeyr. So I made this thread for us all to confess our Baldur's Gate sins. Come and admit that you never completed your stronghold, you've never even heard of Kangaxx, never killed Firkraag or are still dying to know where Hull misplaced his longsword.

I'll begin:

Confession: I have never done the Viconia romance.

Confession: I have never played a thief character.

Exporting and final saves

Is exporting a character after the final fight in BG:EE and importing that character file into BG2:EE functionally identical to importing from the final save created? Or does the save game keep other variables?

I remember reading somewhere on here about "overflow" xp beyond the 161k cap transferring with one of the methods but I can't seem to find that now.

An idea of this thread has come into my mind recently.

So, let's go!

1. - Did you hear my friend John has been fired?
- Yep, I've just heard it. Apparently he's failed a save, or something.

2. - What is the most useless thing in the world?
- The ring of infravision.

3. [spoiler=because of the size]

(from http://www.ironworksforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2043):

There are three Flaming Fist Mercenaries on horseback out in the river bottoms. As they are riding along a small wounded gibberling runs out in front of them. It stops and turns their way.

The poor gibberling was mortally wounded (slash through the midsection by a long sword +1).

This was no oridinary gibberling, it spoke Common. The three FF mercenaries were astonished and dumbfounded when they heard this.

The gibberling said, "If you help me, I will grant you three wishes, or if you kill me a great death will come upon you."

The FF mercenaries decided to take the lawful way, and help out the poor monster. They took it to the local healer (Temple of Helm) and he gladly helped out anything in need.

After it was all cleaned up it was about to leave. Than it turned to the FF mercenaries and said, "about the three wishes, you must split them up between you; only 1 wish apiece."

The FF mercenaries were not happy; they thought they were getting 3 wishes apiece. The mercenaries were all different in one way. One of them was very fat, the other was a tall and skinny man, and the last was small and fat.

The gibberling then said, "I can see that you are not happy with my decision, but I will give you two days to decide." Once you have decided I will be waiting here for you," said the gibberling.

The mercenaries left and talked on their way back to their houses. "I dont think that is fair, we cared for that little beast and this is how it repays us," said the fat one. "Yea, I say we get the wishes and then we kill it for sport," said the tall one. The small and plump one was happy unlike the others, because he was a poor halfling with a bad house and job (being a FF mercenary must suck).

As they split up to go their seperate ways they waved good-bye. The tall one went to the left, fat one the middle, and halfling the right.

The next morning the local town crier was distributing the newspaper called the Elven Classic. The fat and halfling mercenaries met in the town square where he was. They asked for a newspaper to check out teh local problems. There on the front page, read in large letters "FLAMING FIST MERCENARY MURDERED"

At the site of this, the fat and halfling mercenaries started to panick. They went to their friends house.. and to their suprise there were many guards out in front. They went up and asked one of them what had happened here. He said that the FF mercenary inside was murdered during the night. They said his head was shoved though a wall with slash marks over his body. The FF mercenaries were scared out of their wits that they ran all the way back to the town square.

By this time it was turning darker, and the sky turned a deeper blue. "I better get home soon, incase my wife needs me," said the fat one. The halfling split up and went his own way to his house. As he entered the door he locked it and checked all the windows. He got in bed with his sword and shield by his side. He got up in the morning to find his body was still intact. He went outside with his armor on. He then went to the town square to meet his friend.

Today was the day he would get his wish he thought as he headed to meet his friend. He arrived and did not find his friend inside the town square. There the town crier was selling more newspapers. The halfling bought one and AGAIN on the front read "ANOTHER FLAMING FIST MERCENARY MURDERED".

The little halfling was shocked and at this he ran over to his friends house. There in front were some more guards. He couldn't believe that his only friends had been murdered by some beast. He than thought of the Temple of Helm and his wish. He ran over there as fast as he could. There just as he said so the gibberling had waited for them.

"Where have you been, its late in the day and I must get going," said the gibberling. "Sorry to be late, but my friends were murdered in the night," said the Halfling. "Sorry to hear that *snicker* *snicker* I hope you are ready for your THREE wishes now that your friends are gone," replied the gibberling. "Really!? I get three wishes now! Cool!," said the halfling.

At that the halfling used up two of his wishes, one on a new house and the other on the strongest shield and sword in the land. On his last wish he thought very hard, and decided to bring his friends back from the dead. At these last words the gibberling casted the spell/wish and his friends appeared in front of him. Just as he did this the gibberling said his good-byes.

He ran off down the ridge and over the hill out of sight. The halfling asked his friends if they were feeling ok. They replied in unison,"We are fine, but we still remember what killed us. In the faint shadows we could see that it was a small beast the size of a gibbe...OH MY GOD! YOU LET THE BEAST GO!!!."

At those words, they glanced the way that the gibberling had ran. "Do you think the wound that that gibberling had was from a sword of an unhappy customer?" said the Halfling. "We shall never speak of this again," they all said together. Was it the gibberling who had done the carnage? Or was it another monster still lurkering in the city limits?

New cleric kits, pretty please?

$

0
So my favorite class by far is the cleric! Divine magic might not be the most popular out there, but i actually enjoy divine magic more so than arcane. Throw in the fact that you can put on a full plate, still cast your spells and have nifty abilities like turn undead, couldn't enjoy playing the cleric more... or could i?

The only problem i have with clerics in Baldur's Gate are the kits, which force you into a specific direction and removes many of your choices. Let's take a look at the cleric kits now, and i'm going to take the cleric stronghold in Baldur's Gate 2 as part of this discussion.

Priest of Talos - You're evil, deceiving and brutal. You'll sell your own mother AND dog if it makes Talos happy. While the stronghold quest is probably the best one out of the 3 cleric ones, it really awards you for backstabbing and being as mean and cruel as possible. Tell someone to go kill their wife's lover, kill someone yourself and frame someone else. It's fine if you're into being 100% cruel, but i'm rarely 100% anything so it fails there for me.

Priest of Helm - I love the idea of the Priest of Helm when it comes to alignment, I'm a sucker for lawful neutral. But once you do the stronghold quest it really annoy me how they follow the rules 110%. I'm all for following a set of rules, hence why i play lawful neutral, but when you have to do it every single time. The stronghold quest are so hit or miss for me. It doesn't help either that the watcher's keep should be a wonderful thing for Priest of Helms, but looking at those helmites, they really are fools all of them. This together with Anomen whom i'm not to keen on, really makes Helm stand out as something bad in my mind. Still it's the one i prefer out of the choices.

Priest of Lathander - You're good, like really good, and nice! Oh and you are good at slaying undead! I'm normally all for playing good, but it turns a bit too sweet with Lathander. And reading the description in the game of Priest of Lathander "And there are numerous wealthy temples devoted to him" makes me raise my eyebrow, what is this? Sune? Some greedy god? I'm probably taking it the wrong way but for me a temple of Lathander should be a spartan temple with only the necessary things. The stronghold is fine although very bland in my opinion, comes in last place on the list.

So for cleric strongholds : Talos -> Helm -> Lathander
And for cleric kits : Helm -> Talos -> Lathander

So what i would like to get introduced are a few kits that aren't so 100% following their alignment. I really liked what they did with the two new kits in IWD but no one have ported them as a mod to Baldur's gate yet and i'm a horrible modder. I'm curious as to why Beamdog doesn't add them to Baldur's Gate? And secondly why aren't there more cleric kits to start with? I would imagine they are very simple to do, the gods and history is already out there, you'll only have to add 2 spell like abilities and that's it. Yes i'm not expecting them to make new strongholds, but I'm sure that you could put them into one of the existing strongholds and i wouldn't mind. I can see from a roleplay view my character working for some other god that is friendly/close to his own god and in that way make choices that the other god might not agree with.

There was a BGEE mod out there for new cleric kits that also gave these kits to NPC's. This was awesome and i really enjoyed it, sadly the mod got broken with 1.3 and it doesn't look like it'll get fixed anytime soon.

Anyway, that's my rant!

Is there a reason that she isn't getting 10% open locks from it? She gets 10% in every thieving skill except open locks. This was something that beamdog added (which is awesome!) and i'm curious what is the thought behind not adding 10% open lock as well so she gets 10% in all thieving skills.
