Today I'll be attempting to destroy the elven pantheon with my sister Bodhi. BRB with results.

I want to be a bad boy in BG:EE

I want to make my 1st evil playthrough in BG:EE, even if I did it a million times with a good party. I'm not sure about party composition.
I have a lot of mods installed including the hardest settings of SCS so this is intentionnally power gamey.

My mind is set on 4 of my companions:
Dorn
Baeloth
Edwin

And from Dark Horizons

Morwen Alanadel

Race: Half-elf
Class: Skald Bard (specialised in bows)
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral

STR 12
CON 10
DEX 18
INT 16
WIS 12
CHR 16

If I take Viconia, I'll have to roll a thief variant. Fighter/thief looks best I guess.

If I take a thief NPC which one should it be? (I have Vynd NPC in mind http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/29207/vynd-drow-assassin-npc-now-available-for-bg-ee-tutu-and-trilogy ). But then what of my PC? Priest of Helm looks very strong (dat Seeking Sword) but RP-wise it doesn't seem to fit -there are Paladins of Helm iirc- or multiclass fighter/cleric. Fighter/cleric dual is not and option imo: while stronger eventually, I need the healing spells early.

My last option is to replace Baeloth/Edwin for Kagain since I have a Skald. I want to know what you guys think about this? If you guys think it better to get the dwarf, I'll probably remove Baeloth since I want Edwin's banters -people say they're great- unless there's a good Baeloth banter pack.

Life and Times of a Bhaalspawn

Based on no particular Bhaalspawn, but I like to think everyone's thought of something along these lines at least once.

Narrator: Hey there, Billy! Do you want to be CHARNAME, a Bhaalspawn of incredible power?

Billy: Do I ever! That sounds neato!

Narrator: Great! The first thing you need to know is that your daddy is Bhaal, God of Death and Murder!

Billy: Wowzers!

Narrator: AND DADDY HATES YOU

Billy: W-what?

Narrator: The sole purpose of your creation was to serve as a sacrifice to empower his resurrection.

Billy: Then what about my mummy?

Narrator: She also hates you, and if things had gone as Bhall originally planned, would have been the one sacrificing you.

Billy: Oh...

Narrator: Not to worry, Billy! You get an awesome adoptive father, who guides and teaches you!

Billy: Yay!

Narrator: And who is then killed by your brother. Who hates you.

Billy: Nooooooo

Narrator: But don't worry Billy! There's plenty of perks to being CHARNAME, especially for a strapping young man such as yourself. Just look at all these lovely ladies you can romance in the second game! Introduce yourself to them, Billy!

Billy: Hi, I'm Billy.

Jaheira: MY HUSBAND IS DEAD

Billy: Oh...

Jaheira: But CHARNAME is here... Yeeeeeeeeeeessss....

Billy: Uh... I'm not sure I'm comfortable right now.

Jaheira: Young, virile CHARNAME....

Billy: I-I need an adult.

Jaheira: I AM AN ADULT!

Narrator: Haha, that's about enough, you crazy cougar. Perhaps Jaheira isn't quite right for you, Billy. But what about Aerie?

Aerie: Hi there! I'm cute as a button!

Billy: Uh, I guess you are.

Aerie: Oh, you said it. You just admitted I'm cute.

Billy: I guess I did?

Aerie: Well, now I'm going to fawn over you and make you deal with all my crushing self-esteem problems for the next fifteen hours.

Billy: W-what?

Aerie: SAY YOU LOVE ME OR I LEAVE THE PARTY

Narrator: Alright, so maybe Aerie isn't ideal for you either, Billy. Let's try Viconia.

Viconia: Here's a walkthrough for my romance. Read it.

Billy: But I wanted to play without a walkthrough...

Viconia: Then I'm almost certainly going to leave your party in a huff at some point. On an unrelated note, can you pass me Crom Faeyr?

Billy: Then... If I follow the walkthrough, you won't leave?

Viconia: Yeah, sure.

Billy: OK! I can work with this!

Narrator: That's great, Billy! You've found love!

Billy: Yay!

Narrator: Now to make it really hard for you to enjoy that love, I'm going to install Ascension.

Billy: W-what?

Narrator: Don't worry, you won't be affected by it for the next 150 hours at least.

*150 hours later*

Billy: WHAT IS THIS

Narrator: That's the stuff, Billy!

Billy: WHY ARE THERE DRAGONS EVERYWHERE

*190 hours later*

Billy: Well, I made it.

Narrator: Good job, Billy! You've claimed the Throne of Bhaal, and rejected its power to be with your love, Viconia! Don't you feel fulfilled?

Billy: You know, despite how horrifyingly difficult the whole journey was, I do!

Narrator: That's great! By the way, Viconia dies in her epilogue, leaving you to begin a crusade of vengeance.

Billy: W-what?

Narrator: Good job, Billy!

Offhand Discoloration

I wanted to put this up to ask if anybody else has encountered this 'bug', assuming it is one.

So, I have a Cleric/Ranger dual-wielding Flail/Morningstars and War Hammers. In BGEE latest, there is no issue: (pic 1). I have no mods on it, clean install.

In IWDEE, there is discoloration on the weapons (pic 2). I have a few mods on it: APR on Spec, aTweaks, BG2 Tweaks, Wizard Slayer Rebalancing, and the BG2 Pickpocket Values.

In BGIIEE: there is discoloration (pic 3). No mods currently on this one: I just updated my game to the beta 1.3 through Steam.

So, has anybody else noticed this? Is it worth putting into the bugs section? Is it because of a mod?

The Baldur's Gate Soundtrack MIDI Covers

Hi everybody!

This is my attempt to recreate a MIDI mockup of Baldur's Gate videogame soundtrack that I loved so much, starting from simple listening composer Michael Hoenig's OST audio cd.
Everything has been played and recorded entirely by ear, listening and analyzing to the original soundtrack.
The lack of any available orchestral score sheet or midi file (as much as I know) made the task particularly complicated, due to texture complexity of the original arrangements.
Therefore, this work does not claim to be an exact copy, but a cover, played with today's virtual instrumentation technology.
On the other hand, I tried to remain as faithful as possible to the original sound for obvious reasons of loyalty and gratitude to this great soundtrack, as it is.
Analyzing arrangements and instrumentation has been a useful task as well as exciting.
I put all my enthusiasm for this project, hoping that my efforts can be understood in its pure meaning of paying a homage to BG music, which gave me fun, in those years when I was little more than a kid, beginning to approach movie soundtracks.
I apologize in advance for any inaccuracies and possible error in this "impossible mission". I too am a human being with all my own limitations!
Any question or suggestion will be appreciated, feel free to post any comment you want.

Life and Times of a Bhaalspawn: Verse 2: Chapter 2: Electric Boogaloo

$

Read Life and Times of a Bhaalspawn to gain an appreciation for what's going on here. Or don't. Suffice it to say, Billy took Viconia's epilogue hard.

Narrator: Hey there, Billy! Why the glum face?

Billy: I am death given form. All I touch turns to ash in my grasp. Those I love, perish. My love, Viconia, is gone, and I am torn between throwing myself into dark feelings of revenge, and casting that vengeance aside to give my son a better, more peaceful life

Narrator: Wow, Billy! That sounds super interesting! But you know what else is interesting? Dual Classing!

Billy: Leave me to grieve for my departed wife.

Narrator: First of all, let's talk about all the Dual Classing options. You have Fighter > Mage, Cleric > Mage and Thief > Mage!

Billy:... What about the other options?

Narrator: Don't be silly, Billy! Nobody dual classes to anything but a Mage!

Billy: What about dual classing from a mage to something else?

Narrator: AHAHAHAHAHAHA Christ, Billy, are you serious?

Billy: Cleric's are good. Viconia was a Cleric. I loved how she would smile slightly when healing someone, if only out of satisfaction gained from her own talents as a Cleric.

Narrator: Let's be serious, Billy! First off, let's talk about Fighter > Mages! Like you, Billy!

Billy:...

Narrator: I need you to show some enthusiasm, Billy.

Billy: Neato.

Narrator: That's the spirit! So, Fighter > Mages are used for several reasons! First, to gain higher HP! Second, to actually be able to use weapons as a viable alternative to magic! Thirdly, to gain access to Fighter gear as a Mage!

Billy: Coolio.

Narrator: There are several kits to be used as a Fighter > Mage. Which do you think is best, Billy?

Billy: The one which would give me the power to save my wife.

Narrator: You have to pick one, Silly Billy! But the real answer is: Berserker! Did that surprise you? I bet you thought it was going to be Kensei! I know how you love being a Kensei > Mage!

Billy: No. Once I saw my wife waste away in front of my eyes, I realized my own powerlessness. All my training as a Kensei. All the lessons of magic that Gorian imparted to me in my youth, that I only began to capitalize and use after Irenicus had tortured me, mastering the arcane as a Mage... None of it could save Viconia. I know well my own flaws.

Narrator: I love how you wove your backstory and reasons for dual classing in there, Billy! But yes, Berserker > Mages are the best Fighter > Mage dual class, due to the immunities inherent in the Berserker's Rage ability. The negligible bonuses from Kensei simply aren't as valuable as that, and Wizard Slayer > Mage is just plain horrifying to even imagine. A plain Fighter > Mage dual class is certainly solid, but lacks the advantages of Kensei/Berserkers.

Narrator: Now, Cleric > Mages are a whole different kettle of- Billy, why are you trying to sneak away? You aren't a Thief > Mage, Billy! And why would you want to be, considering the game is overloaded with them anyway! I mean, wow, there's two of them and a Thief/Illusionist multiclass in-game. But I can see you're tired, so maybe we should talk about a bad dual class to cheer you up!

Billy: I need to sleep on whether or not to launch a vengeful crusade against the drow.

Narrator: Oh, you absolutely do that.

Billy: W-what?

Narrator: What, didn't you finish reading the epilogue?

Billy: No, my tears blurred the screen.

Narrator: Didn't I tell you before? Viconia's epilogue is pretty harsh.

Billy: Hypothetically, what would have happened if I'd gone with Aerie or Jaheira instead?

Narrator: You'd have lived happily ever after, heck, Aerie would have even met her parents again!

Billy: Then... why only Viconia...

Narrator: I don't know, Billy. But you know what I do know?

Billy: What? What do you know? Is it about Viconia? Is she at peace in the afterlife?

Narrator: I know all about Dual Classing! So let's talk about Thief > Fighters now! Yaaay!

Which race is your Fighter/Thief?

$

We all know Fighter/Thief is one of the most versatile multiclasses available, but which race should you play as, and why? I think an argument could be made for all of them honestly (except human of course).

I chose an elf for the 19 DEX and sword and bow to hit bonuses. The 17 CON can be easily increased with the Manual of Bodily Health, the low racial thief skill bonuses are remedied by the high DEX, the sword to hit bonus makes them deadly dual wielders, and they are simply the best archers in the game.

Which race did you choose?

I want you guys/damsels to vote the most entertaining NPC in the saga in your opinion.

You can vote for any NPC be it Bioware, Beamdog or Mod. I will regularly check the topic to update the OP with the votes. I'll do it manually since you can only have 10 poll options.

Note: NPC "enhanced by mods" will still be counted as a vote for said NPC.
Edit: To avoid scattering votes, you can only vote for playable npc!
Stating why you vote for said NPC is most welcome.

I vote for Xan thanks to the Xan friendship mod.

Baldur's Gate & Icewind Dale Jeopardy! (May contain spoilers!)

Dear Ladies and Gentlehamsters,

welcome to the Reverse Question Thread, or
"Baldur's Gate Jeopardy" if you like.

In this thread I want users to provide answers.
But without any questions asked beforehand.

Instead it works the other way around.
You present answers and the others must find
appropriate questions that fit your given answer.

Example: Answer: "Boo"
Possible Questions: "Who's the cutest miniature space giant hamster?"
"What's the name of Minsc's animal companion?"
"What is Oob spelled backwards?"

Please post only one new answer at a time.
However you may post several questions to all answers given so far in this thread.
Answers and questions have to be Baldur's Gate related.

I'll start first:
Answer: "Plug tails"

Now it's your turn to think of questions that fit that answer or to provide
a new answer.

Have fun!

for clarification: You can provide questions to old, given answers as many as you like.
The rule above just says that you must not provide more than one new answer at a time.

for example: You do not always have to provide a question to the latest answer.
Just provide questions to any previous answers you like.

Announcement: With the upcoming Icewind Dale:EE I hereby extend this thread to the Icewind Dale games.

Apologies if this has already been addressed, and/or if this is in the wrong section of the forum.
I just got a MacBook to replace my Windows PC, and was hoping my PC purchases of BGEE, BG2EE, and IWDEE would include OS X installers, but I can't seem to download them without repurchasing.
I imagine if I'd bought them on Steam, I could download them without buying them again—am I mistaken in this? I purchased directly from Beamdog in order to give you guys more of the money from the sale. Do I need to spend another $55??
If so, I can't help but be disappointed :(

What would you have done?

We complain alot on this forum, about new content, old content, about how our level 1 bard just got shanked for the fifth time in a row officially making me give up on no reload challenges.

So what would you have done different? I'd like to make a request that this not become a debate over whats good or bad. Everyone has a right to like or hate what they want and more often then not its a matter of taste. In the same spirit of posting try to keep complaints down as well unless you have a change you think would make it better. I want this to be about expressing ideas and flexing creativity or balance skills. If its about how you would have made a fight harder, balance classes, re-write certain things, completely replace large bits, please post it and if you like someone's idea please click like so they get that warm little glow inside.

That all being said let me start with one of my biggest problems in the entire series. Melissan. Putting my ideas behind spoiler boxes, cause I'm about to do a few big text walls here.

1.Change her design.
One of my biggest problems with Melissan is that she was advertised everywhere. Right on the box art. Looking like a druid with a claw fetish rather then a super evil villain. Look at Sarevok, he looks like the kind of dark lord that'd make Sauron go "Daaaamn, looking good boy!". Look at Irenecus, he looks as mad as he is and as tortured as he feels. Melissan? Druid with a claw fetish. Worse of all, her face is *right there*. You could see it from the very beginning. You knew she was the final boss and were expected to just go along with it. Nothing will ruin immersion like this.

I remember back in my days on City of Heroes(God I miss that game) we had a member of our anti-hero/vigilante group who was evil. He said how evil he was out of character *constantly*. Made no attempt to hide it and was bad at hiding it in character as well, but we couldn't call him out on it. Why? Because that'd be metagaming (using out of character knowledge in character). Never mind your excuses, you got labeled as metagaming. It was the most frustrating thing ever and its basically what you go through in ToB. You *know* shes evil but part of you spends the whole time wondering if its because shes bad at hiding it or if you've had it spoiled for you already. Its immersion breaking and frustrating at the same time.

So what would I do? Change her design considerably. Consider Sarevok, remove his helmet and tattoos and you can't tell its him. Do the same with Melissan. Heck, make her look inhuman. Shes full of Bhaal essences, right? make her take on a slightly more humanoid slayer like look. Have her claw armor extend to cover her entire arm, a good portion of her upper body and her neck and mouth. Suddenly all you can see is eyes, yellow and glowing and her breasts are hidden so gender is not so obvious. Replace the feathers with horns. There you go. I think this design would be nicer looking and wouldn't ruin the surprise of her being the big bad...Well, okay. It'd still be ruined for other reasons, wich I will move onto now.
2.Change her voice/dialogue.
Now, I want you to understand. I think her voice actoress was mostly fine. Once she revealed herself to be evil her voice was wonderful and fitting. Up til then? No. It was like Aladin trusting Jafar (I know I made a disney reference and yes I am ashamed.) Everything about the guy's voice drips of evil, as does Mellisan's. It doesn't help that she comes off as a terrible actor.

Take the whole indecent after you kill the mace wielding bhaalspawn super orc. She shouts "NOOOOO!!!" in the most horribly and ridiculously exaggerated way. Seriously. Its just screams of bad acting. What did she think would happen? We come to a gentleman's agreement and shake hands? He was a mad half-orc and we're *both* bhaalspawn. She should have simply expressed regret but not surprise, not shouted like a maniac. In this I can't blame the voice actress. Thats the sort of line that you can't do much with because its not a realistic reaction to the situation. Regardless, it doesn't end there.

When Saradash was destroyed her reaction was...underwhelming. Considering how she reacted to you killing a insane and violent orc it just came off as insincere. What they should have done was have her express deep regret, possibly even cry, but put on a brave face as there was still more work to be done. Maybe it was just me but she seemed awfully unashamed of the fact that her attempt to "help" got all those she swore to "protect" horribly murdered. Like I said, I can't blame the voice actress too much here, the writing was horrid. Regardless, moving on!
3.Change villain's reaction to her.
This is a minor one, at most, but I remember growing so frustrated that two of the game's main villains said "She was up to something" and I couldn't suspect a thing, because apparently I was captain McDumbButt. I find ToB in general has far too many cut scenes that lead to things I couldn't have possibly known. Really, I can see keeping the whole orc warlord taking her away because hes suppose to be insane and paranoid (though I'd try to give examples of him acting this way prior to him taking away Mellisan to enforce this). When Balthazar (I think I'm missing an A there) does it its just...annoying. They should have had him just mention it happened and possibly even have him be the exposition that reveals that Mellisan was up to no good the whole time. Much more natural flowing then summoning fire giants back from the dead to tell you, and then you chase her down, find her, she teleports you to your own pocket plane as a demonstration of how powerful shes become then BEGIN FINAL BATTLE! After being given the choice to ask about her motivations of course.

Like I said, this is minor, but still annoying.
4.Change her "past"
If I remember right Mellisan's whole deal was "I help the bhaalspawn and protect them because reasons and yes." She had no motivation in her fake story and that got me suspicious ASAP. It wouldn't have been hard to change this either. Say shes a cleric of Illmator, who knows how the bhaalspawn suffer and wishes to help them through it.

Better yet, have her say her child was a bhaalspawn who was killed for what he was. After that she became dedicated to making sure no other bhaalspawn suffered the way her son did, at the hands of an angry mob, riping him apart as he was set aflame and she was held back, helpless and unheeded.

Also, make the story partly true. She did have a son with Bhaal (seriously. Look at her. If I was Bhaal I'd hit that so hard she'd have twins). Her son was murdered by another spawn of Bhaal and in her grief she may have beseeched what little of Bhaal remained in this world and asked how to bring her son back, the one who was destined to be the new lord of murder, and Bhaal? He just laughed. His time was coming closer and he cared not whom his vessel was nor for his priestess's pitiful whining.

And so she hunting down the bhaalspawn who murdered her son, killed him herself, took upon her bhaal's essence and felt her son had, in some way, returned to her. She knew then what she had to do. Become the new lord of murder, forsake Bhaal for how he threw her away, and then perhaps she could even bring back her son.

After all, even chaotic evil is capable of loving their children. Mind you, at the end battle you could point out how just a bit of Bhaal's essence brought back Sarevok, that Mellisan may have been able to bring her child back the whole time but did not, that perhaps her child was not the reason, but the excuse. She used his death to make a grab for power she always wanted regardless. Such an argument would make her wroth and angry, I mean, foam at the mouth angry...And god damn would that be satisfying to say. You might even be able to offer to bring her child back yourself, something wich would only anger her more. Possibly because she never wanted to bring him back, only the power to do so, or she never thought to try. Either way, she would have to kill you now for being a smartass.

Regardless, this might turn Mellisan from a MWAHAHAHA I AM EVIL villain to a somewhat sympathetic villain. Her motivation is love, or at least her excuse is.
I don't claim to be the best writer, or super awesome, but I think these few changes would greatly enhance Mellisan in terms of character and story. If you disagree, please, post your own ideas. Be it for Mellisan, an NPC, gameplay, a kit change, or whatever. Tell us what you would do different if you had the power to do so.

BG2 Solo SCS Spell Guide

BG2 Solo SCS Spell Guide

Introduction

Spell guides: there are dozens already out there and while everybody's opinions differ, we all know that Magic Missile, Mirror Image, Skull Trap, Stoneskin, Breach, Protection From Magical Weapons, Project Image, Abi-Dalzim's Horrid Wilting and Time Stop are all you need, right?

Trouble is that nearly all the spell guides already written are for the vanilla game, where indeed a handful of powerful spells are all you need to conquer everything. See a mage? Breach him. Melee opponents getting to you? Stoneskin. Want to kill a bunch of enemies? Horrid Wilting. And so on.

When I first started playing with SCS I was amazed at the additional complexity of the AI. In particular the improved mages were remarkable. In the vanilla game I had never blinked at seeing a Yuan-ti mage. Now with SCS they were an utter nightmare, they hung around for ages, dispelled all my protections, and peppered me with Magic Missiles. The game had changed and the old tricks no longer worked.

At first I had no idea how to get through layers of magical defences. Then I read through the spell descriptions and gradually began to work it out. So I need a Secret Word to get rid of that. But first a Spell Thrust to remove this. And only then can I Breach. Do I have a Secret Word and Spell Thrust? Of course not. Who in the vanilla game even looked at those spells, let alone memorise them?

For the last few years I have exclusively played solo no reload. Party games no longer appeal to me, I know the companions, I love the roleplaying, the story is great. But I've already been there and now the challenge I'm interested in is the strategic combat aspect: to fight the full array of BG2 opponents at their utmost power, with their AI enhanced by SCS. And to do it without any kind of cheesy tactics or crutches, and most importantly, with just the one life. To survive everything they can throw at me and to find a way around it and ultimately to have the Bhaalspawn prevail.

I have lost count of the number of no-reload SCS games I have played. Most fail quickly (damn you Dire Charm!); some last longer (how the %*$! am I supposed to deal with the Shade Lord's aura?!). Some get very far and then succumb to restart-itis (Okay I'm in Suldanessellar but how cool would a Berserker-Assassin with Swashbuckler AC bonus but no armour and no traps be?).

One thing I've realised from my experience is that while all kinds of classes and combinations can do well if utilised intelligently, mage types have a far better chance of survival than any other class. Moreover, the sheer complexity of arcane magic adds a huge amount to the strategic element of the game. If you're ever going to beat a no-reload SCS, you need to understand the magic system.

I decided to write this spell guide from a specific perspective. This is not a vanilla BG2 spell guide, nor is it a guide for party play. This guide is for a solo character with SCS. My explanations and ratings for each arcane spell below are based on my experience playing the game under no-reload conditions. Naturally if you play with reloads, you might not weight so heavily towards some defensive spells that I rate highly. I should also add that I play with Item Randomiser, which I think is a wonderful mod which makes every game different. As such, I have not assumed that you will have specific equipment that would otherwise be easily or quickly obtainable and which would make certain spells obsolete.

Finally I should point out that this guide is written for BG2, ie SoA and ToB. If you're playing from BG1 then bear in mind that while the majority of the guidance and explanation is still relevant, some of the nuances are different. For example spells like Sleep are very useful in BG1 and totally useless in BG2, so the rating below would not be applicable for the BG1 portion of the game.

Two Types of Casters

In the descriptions below I make reference to two types of casters: pure spellcasters and fighter-types.

Pure spellcasters are those classes that rely almost exclusively on magic. These include single class mages, sorcerers, cleric/mages and most types of thief/mages. Pure spellcasters have to use spells to cover all functions: summoning, damage, defence, debuffing, crowd control etc. They therefore require a wide ranging spellbook and do not get too much mileage from spells that enhance combat prowess.

Fighter-types are those classes for whom magic complements their weapon skills. These include the various types of fighter/mages and swashbuckler/mages. Fighter-types have slightly different requirements from their spellbook: they do not need magic for their damage output, they can use their weapons and thereby get by with fewer damaging and summoning spells. Fighter types can instead concentrate on defensive spells as well as debuffing and crowd control. They are especially interested in spells that enhance combat capability.

While the value and utility of most spells are similar for spellcasters and fighter-types, certain spells have nuances that favour one type more than the other. I have noted these where applicable. Likewise some spells get a higher rating for one type over the other.

Explanation of Ratings

I have rated each spell out of 5, with 1 the lowest rating and 5 the highest. Below is an explanation of what each rating means.

1: These spells are either useless or of such limited utility that you will hardly ever need them. You will pretty much never need to memorise these spells.
