Baldurs Gate high res artwork!

Did you know?

So this is just a thread for interesting things that people have picked up over the years. While most of the information has been freely available for some time, the game is big enough that you might find something you missed. If not, it's still fun to see just how much detail the developers put in.

Did you know that if you are playing an elf named Drizzt, and your reputation is under 12, Drizzt will attack you? Did you also know that if you kill the three mages guarding the skyship devices in Baldur's Gate, then Shandalar skips the 'asking' part of sending you to the Ice Island? Not surprising, given that they were his daughters. Guy is probably a bit angry at you.

Chronic Restarting Detox Camp

Hi, my name's demented and I'm a chronic restarter. I wasn't always this way, I use to play games with only one character and saw it through to the end. There would be no roleplaying or multi-classing. Baldur's Gate changed that. Now I can barely get an hour in without restarting the game. There are just too many possibilities.

I might start with a monk who's devoted to justice. She eventually gets kicked out of her order for her actions and becomes a Kensai warrior who metes out her form of justice to those she sees as guilty. Then I'll think of a cleric/wizard who's determined to uncover the deepest secrets of magic, but eventually goes insane from his quest.

I've tried playing other video games but I just get bored. For Bhaal's sake I played Metal Gear Solid 4 for the first time yesterday and all I could think about was my wild mage Anansi. I need help.

As I learn more from this forum, I realize how much about the game I didn't know about. There were items, strategies and spells that could have made my life a lot easier against various monsters. There were dialogue options I had never been given. Easter Eggs I never knew about. Etc, etc.

I was interested in seeing this kind of topic ever since my boy @Quartz‌ said that he never made Crom Faeyr. So I made this thread for us all to confess our Baldur's Gate sins. Come and admit that you never completed your stronghold, you've never even heard of Kangaxx, never killed Firkraag or are still dying to know where Hull misplaced his longsword.

I'll begin:

Confession: I have never done the Viconia romance.

Confession: I have never played a thief character.

Boxed-product wise, I don't see retail working well. I see the demand as not uniform and hard to meet with a blanket retail approach.

Im making this a Twitter comment forum, dont think everybody has a twitter account.

Inst-ed of making a icewind dale enhanced edition bemdog should focus on a baldurs gate three. There could be much potential if done right. Make a good story. For example take us back to the sword coast, no bahllspawn but a simple peasent. Have different paths such as ability to join flaming fist army and rise to war with amn and ecentually become king. Or a theif who rises to the greatest assain in the land. there could be many more, baulders gate three will make money. nuff said

Portraits for BG from Pillars of Eternity

In the latest Pillars of Eternity update we finally got a character portrait in a good resolution. It looks gorgeous!

image

So, no doubt about it: when Pillars of Eternity are out, portraits from that game will more than suit BG.

By the way, the name of this portrait is "pe_portrait_female_human_580" which leads me to dream that we'll have MANY portraits in Pillars of Eternity for PCs and NPCs.

Has any brave soul taken it as his/hers project to bring Ascension to bg2:ee.

'Dungeons & Dragons Dice Masters' tabletop game featuring BG characters

For any fans of unplugged gaming out there, it looks like at least one Baldur's Gate favourite will be making it to the tabletop in the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons Dice Masters customizable dice game. I've played the Marvel version of the game and it's pretty cool, but I have to say I wasn't that excited about the prospect of a D&D version. However, that all changed when I saw this:

http://deviramericas.com/categoria/wizkids/dd-dice-masters-battle-for-faerun-minsc-and-boo-promo-card-and-die/?lang=en

From what I know about the game mechanics, it's most likely that, though this is a promotional card, the playable character Minsc & Boo probably won't be exclusive to the promotion and will just be a different version of a character that comes in the base game. It looks like it's a tie-in with the upcoming 'Legends of Baldur's Gate' comic, so I'm really hoping the comic features some other BG characters (Edwin, PLEASE!)

Anyway, just thought you guys might be interested. There's not much else released about the game just yet, but what has been revealed can be found here:

Is a Cleric/Conjurer overpowered?

$

My no-reload challenge with a Cleric/Illusionist ended after I was too careless while trying to get a tome from some flesh golems. RIP Cleric/Illusionist, keep reaching for that constitution point.

So now that I've worked out how to use EE-Keeper... I want to make either a Cleric/Conjurer or a Cleric/Necromancer in another no-reload run.

I have a feeling that the Cleric/Conjurer might be overpowered, although still not as powerful as a single class Wild Mage or Sorcerer. The Cleric spells can more than make up for the Conjurer's weaknesses, e.g. True Seeing. But it would be pretty cool to get those extra mage spells per level afforded by the mage speciality. And this might all be balanced out by the fact that it's a no-reload run. Ideally, I'd use Charname as the ultimate party support character with buffs and control spells.

Cleric/Necromancer would be decidedly weaker, since he'd miss out on PI and Mislead. But there's something very appealing from a flavour/roleplaying perspective in having a Cleric/Necromancer. It also might force me to try new spell strategies, and to rely less on Project Image in ToB.

Anyone tried either of these builds? Any thoughts or suggestions?

What would you like to see in an NPC mod.

I would like to try to approach this from a bit of a different angle. I have seen many post about what is a “good” NPC or “bad” NPC mod. This approach makes me a bit uncomfortable for several reasons. For one thing it seems to often get boiled down to an intense discussion naming a few different mods that some people have really taken a dislike to. I have even seen people who like such mods being labeled as having “bad taste”. From that point on, I see few other opinions being expressed.

Without giving the name of specific mods, what I would really like to know is what people would like to see more of. If you could write a mod, what are some of the things you would include. Remembering of course, that all peoples opinions are valid.

Just a few examples:
More interactions with other party members.
More personal quests.
Having the NPC fit in nicely with the PC’s quest.
Humor.
More serious situations.
More romance.
Unique NPC equipment.
Unique classes.
Mature content.
PG content.
Or anything else that you have always wanted to see.

2 man party covering f/c/m/t, 160 total attribute points

Which combination would you make to take through from bg:ee to bg2:ee, the added challenge being you have 160 attribute points between the 2 characters (how would you distribute them?). No dual-classing, only multis, you can replace mage for illusionist, in the case you're picking a gnome. And you can only have 1 of each class to make up the multis combos, so f/m/t & f/c won't fly!

Elaborate with your builds and starts below

The Most Underrated Spells

$

Every BG guide says that Abi-Dalzim's Horrid Wilting, Magic Missle, Time Stop and Skull Trap are all great spells. But what do you guys think are underrated spells, irrespective of level?

I'm trying to change my spell strategy to become more diverse and interesting. I've finished the game before by spamming ADHW and skull traps until the cows come home, but want to expand my tactics.

From my own experimentation, I've noticed that Ray of Enfeeblement is a great spell (for BG:EE, at least) that isn't really hyped up in the BG guides. A few times I've noticed that when Jaheira is being pounded by an ogre or whatever (no, not in *that* way - you pervert), a Ray of Enfeeblement spell really neutralises his attack so that he induces minuscule damage. This is sometimes way more helpful than a Magic Missile or Chromatic Orb.

Any recommendations for underrated spells (divine or arcane) that I should try out?

What the biggest "experience split" that you have allowed in your party?

$

For BG2 I want to have a party with Aerie, Jaheira, and Viconia. If my PC is a single-class or dual-class person then the experience will be split 6-ways.

I thought about being a dual-class fighter/mage but I'm apprehensive because then I'll have to spend a long time as a wimpy mage before I can regain my fighter skills. So I'm thinking about being a multi-class fighter/mage, but then the exp would be split 7-ways, which seems like a huge hindrance.

powergaming party (BG2 TOB,NPC and multiplayer)

What is the most powergaming party that you can think of?

two different groups of posts
1) multiplayer created party by player. What classes/races (and items)
2) charname + npc's. What npc's
-this is not 1 vs 2 but creating 2 different threads for 1 purpose is silly
-bg2 tob exp limit
-no mods

and why is this the most powergaming?

for example
F/M/T half-elf - like kensai mage but +100dmg with backstab
Kensai13/Mage - i think everyone know why kensai/mage
cleric/specjalist mage - healer who is almost immortal
mage slayer13/mage - antimage
edwin - most spells

npc's
F/M/T op op
sarevok dualed to mage op
edwin - op op op
aerie - op multi
keldorn - op dispell
Cernd - SS f yeah

like you can see I prefer magic :)

Monster party!

Just wanted to share my custom EE keeper party and ask what you think?image Here is the merry adventuring party of a shadow thief(fighter/thief), Kua-Toa(swashbuckler), rakshasa(fighter/illusionist), minotaur(berserker), genie(cleric/conjurer) and a lich(dark moon monk).imageimageimageimageimageimage

Can't seem to put text where I want it so I will write it here instead. The minotaur accidentally got a lower movement speed but I thought I could make it up with +1 to strength and constitution. As for the lich I found several different models were one was a big black skeleton with what looks like a crown,a small floating skull and the normal robed lich. I wanted to make the Kua-Toa a sahuagin but I could not find any good portraits :/

The Challenge

Everybody seems to be proud to solo the game with a powerful kensai/mage or with a sorcerer.
Weeeeeell, very great, indeed. You are a war machine.

But I propose an alternative challenge.

Make a clone of Cernd, Garrick or other lame NPCs when you create a character, with the same stats and class; or alternatively just CLUAConsole a little (by summoning or teleporting) and then CTRL-Q them (and CTRL-K your PC) before returning to the starting area.

This is a solo challenge!

Anybody solo'd the whole thing with a single classed thief?

All the way through the entire saga, i.e. BGEE + BG2EE?

I have never played a thief in the game at all (although, have employed their skills in the form of companions). I think this would make for a really challenging game.

Custom PC & NPC Portraits

Building on the original thread, started by @Syntia13, this is intended to be a hub to share alternate, fan-made portraits for the enhanced editions of the series. In order to keep the thread running and make it a comprehensive source for portraits, please abide by the site rules and a few guidelines:

Thread Rules

1: Respect artists' creations and their right to them. If portrait-makers ask that you not edit their work, don't. If a mistake is made, simply edit your post to remove the image, apologize, forgive and forget.
2: Do not share images for which you have not received permission from the artists, when possible.* This is particularly true of art from DeviantArt, which hosts many artists who do not want their work shared elsewhere.
3: If you request that a portrait be made, recognize that the artists in this forum do this simply because they enjoy contributing to the community. Be patient, be respectful and say thank you.
4: Be supportive! Many of the artists here are just beginning to learn how to make portraits. Be positive and constructive in your comments, and avoid pointless negativity.
5: If you are making and posting portraits, state who you used as a model (if applicable), either here or on your website. Understand that this still does not make the likeness your property, and be prepared to remove the image if so requested by the copyright holder.

*Understandably, the source of some older portraits is unknown. If in doubt, go to Google Images and drag the portrait to the search bar. You may find the artist or source through that method. Again refer to Rule 1.

Guide to Using Custom Portraits

Portraits in the enhanced editions use three images in bitmap (.bmp) format, the largest of which is only shown during the epilogue in Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal. The three sizes are 210x330, 169x266 (displayed in the character sheet) and 54x84 (displayed on the right UI bar).*

To use custom portraits for your PC:
1: Navigate to your Baldur's Gate directory in (My) Documents.
2: Drop the custom portraits into the Portraits folder.
3: In the game, select Custom when choosing a portrait and select the medium and small sizes. Alternately, if you have already begun your game, select Customize/Appearance from the character sheet.

To use custom portraits for NPCs:
1: Rename the portrait files to match the NPC whose portraits you want to replace. For example, Jaheira's portraits are named JaheiraL, JaheiraM and JaheiraS. There are some portraits in BG1 that do not conform to this, and those in BG2 have their own naming format. Consult this site.
2: Place the portraits in your override folder, located in the directory where you installed the game.

*Note that after the latest patch, the games allow a single large portrait size to be automatically adjusted to the proper sizes. I currently do not recommend this, as it causes pixelation in the small 54x84 version.

If you like the portraits you see here or at any of the sites below, leave a comment here or on the artist's website. We love making portraits, and we love hearing how you connect to them through the game.

Monster Party Members

Now that there's a vampire on the roster, let's talk about other non-PC-races you'd like to see as recruitable party members!

I'm going with Duergar simply because Magda was easily the best thing about the first Black Pits and I would have loved to have her join up in BG2:EE...
