Themed all-PC party builds

$

0
Ok, a confession... I probably spend more time on RPG's creating character concepts than I do actually playing the game. This leaves me with lots of low-mid level saves and very few complete runs.
In that vein, and just for fun, here are a few themed parties from non-D&D media translated into BG:

The classic:
Aragorn - Paladin
Gandalf - Sorcerer
Legolas - Archer
Gimli - Dw.Defender
Frodo - Shadow Dancer
Boromir - Fighter

Discworld all-stars:
Vetinari - Assassin
Vimes - Berserker
Cohen the Barbarian
Lu-Tze - Monk
Rincewind - Wild Mage
Carrot - Paladin

Firefly:
Mal - Thief>Fighter
Jayne - Barbarian
River - Sorceress
Simon - Priest
Book - Monk
Inara - Blade

Batman Villains:
Joker - Jester
Bane - Berserker
Ra's al Ghul - Blackguard
Ivy - Avenger
Catwoman - Thief
Scarecrow - Enchanter

Skyrim:
Dragonborn - Dragon Disciple
Karliah - Thief
Cicero - Jester
Farkas - Fighter
Faralda - Invoker
Delphine - Cavalier

Anyone else play around with these sorts of builds?

Quick loot?

Was the quick loot feature not supposed to be implemented in this patch in bgee? Think I read that somewhere....

I can't find my way to the upper level of the keep. I think I've been out every door to the roof, and I can see two more doors at higher levels but I can't get there. Anybody remember ? Also, is there a way to make the coordinates show on the map?

Has someone noticed this before in the south area between Beregost and Nashkel (it's a cave entrance)?
Cut from the original game?
I'm sure there should be a travel trigger and a simple cave area.

What do you think?

P.S.:
I wish that someone could continue the UB mod work.
It would be really great to see such stuff like:
Ajantis and the monks quest
Nim Furlwing and the hunting dogs quest
Llindellyn and the lucky arrow quest
Welt and Pooch and the rats quest

or even the dreamsequence...

Does anyone else remember this? When I first played BG I could've SWORN that Keldorn's armor did this.

Experience cap question

$

I am playing the original 1999 BG:TotSC, with no mods (because my computer always spazzes out when I install mods). I have always soloed BG, but now I am deciding to play with a party of 3 or 4 NPCs.

The experience cap is at 161,000 exp. So if I have a party of 5 single-class people, does this mean that each person will only be able to reach 32,200 exp? Or will each individual be able to accumulate 161,000 exp?

Here's MY BG2 beginning!! (**UPDATED**)

$

Like many people here, I'd always been frustrated by the piss-poor continuity between BG1 and BG2, mainly because the so-called "canon" party is one that I would never willingly choose to finish BG1 with. The only one of that party that I genuinely like is Dynaheir, and she's long dead and gone before the game even begins! (at least Khalid gets to have his body shown). Not only that, but other of my favorite BG1 NPCs, like Kivan, don't even get a mention in BG2.

Then came @Vasculio's thread here,
http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/comment/457132
...and it turned my whole world upside down - or should I say, right side up!

I'm nearing the end of my current BG1 run, with a party that includes Kivan, Dynaheir, Branwen, and Coran, which I intend to complete the game with. Minsc had briefly been in my party long ago, but took a fatal stroll into a kobold arrow in the Naskel mines and was never raised. Although I won't actually finish the game with Khalid and Jaheira in my party, they had previously spent a fair amount of time in my party and were still alive when I dismissed them.

So I decided to create my own "canon" beginning for BG2, using Vasculio's method for importing BG1 NPCs into BG2, as well as a few other tricks up my own sleeve.

Assembling my BG2 party, starting the game in multiplayer. Recognize any familiar faces?

image

Be sure NOT to choose this dialogue option - or else they'll be a reference to a certain BG1 ranger who is no longer above ground.

image

The NPCs are released from their respective cells. Dynaheir's boots are still made for walking.

image

Valkur's buttocks are still strapping.

image

Kivan's soul still aches for his lost Deheriana.

image

Kivan still retains the 19 strength that he gained from a tome in BG1.

image

Better yet, Branwen retains the 19 wisdom that she gained from the 3 tomes in BG1. Look at all those bonus spells!

image

Branwen also retains her innate spiritual hammer ability (for anyone who ever actually uses this).

image

Dynaheir can still cure poison.

image

Branwen, what are you doing?!? Poor Dynaheir does not feel well inside.

image

Go swing that hammer somewhere else, Branwen! Should she stay here, or head off to the Copper Coronet?

image

Of course Jaheira doesn't recognize Branwen. They were never in my BG1 party at the same time.

image

What's in this cage? Oh nevermind - it's just a rat.

image

Pantaloons, shmantaloons! How about the Big-Fisted Belt instead!

image

Erm, the description seems to be a bit off. (Does anyone possibly know how this could be corrected?)

image

But hey, it still works!

image

What you see above actually required only a very minimal amount of EE-keepering - which is ideal for me, since I don't really like to hack games because I don't want to be perceived as "cheating," and also for fear that I'll break them. Most of the work involved exporting, renaming, and overriding existing files.

Obviously, this still isn't a perfect transition, but it's still a helluva lot better than what the original game offered.

I didn't want to mess around altering the game-generated NPCs, so Imoen is still a thief/mage dual (whereas I always keep her as a thief in BG1), and I didn't import Coran because he appears later in the game with an associated quest. I decided to allow the game-generated Jaheira to remain as a recruitable option too - even though I don't intend to finish BG1 with her, she at least will still be alive when the game ends, and she's associated with some of the best quests/subplots in BG2 IMO.

You know you're playing too much Baldur's Gate when...

1. You complain to your family about having to live in "such a pissant town"
2. You search for objects at the base of every tree you see.
3. You walk into a complete stranger's house and start rummaging through his drawers.
4. You go into your basement to kill spiders.
5. You buy an Irish wolfhound and name him 'Ruffie'.
6. You tell your boss, "I don't like the way this company is working out. Perhaps better leadership would help."
7. You try to pawn severed heads.

9. You have a collection of odd-looking sticks which you believe contain magic, but haven't been identified yet.
10. On your resume, your education is listed as 'lore'
11. You demand discounts on the grounds that you are a hero for getting a cat out of a tree.
12. You rest for exactly 8 hours every night.

that you will meet the person to whom it belongs and return it.
16. You've been wearing a cloak around the office lately.
17. You scan every square inch of the ground looking for hidden objects when on the way to the store.

39. You stand up in the middle of a meeting and start yelling "Less talk and more fight".
40. You are in your car looking at a street map and you can't figure out where to go, because no other sections are highlighted.

2nd Robe of Neutral Archmagi

We all know we can buy one from Thalantyr, but did you know there is another one in game?
Well Ghost of Ulcaster wears it!!!! Surround him with your party so he cant move, and kill poor old ghost.
How?
I am not sure is it against rules or not, but Dagger of Venom procs (if no saves) damage it, same as Arrows of Biting. DoV makes his 15x1dmg, arrows do 20x1.
There is no way to land any other blow (at least my archer with -3 thac0 couldn't do it), unless you roll 20. Even then u receive message "Ulcaster was immune to my weapon".
Upon killing you ll receive only 175exp only and your reputation will suffer -10 (if u are heroic20 as i was). He has no other items except that valuable robe.

I mean why didn't I get to choose what folder I install BG2EE in while getting that option for BGEE. Why is there a startup screen for BGEE that allows for updating, but to update BG2EE I need to update with beamdog?

Why I Won't Be Buying Future Overhaul Games

$

I bought both games, and I posted a criticism of BG2:EE today of the gay content in BG2:EE, which was removed by Dee, the forum administrator. I was told that criticism of gay content is hate speech and offensive (despite the fact that I was offended by the gay content), and that I'm simply in the wrong place. Conservative dollars don't matter here, despite the fact that a lot more of us are buying their games than gays buying their games. I am a paying customer being accused of falsehoods, threatened, and being told that what I think doesn't matter and isn't worthy of expression.

Overhaul, good luck, your editions are too "enhanced" for me.

Respawning Creatures in BG:EE - What's your preference?

$

(Note well: This poll is not official, nor a promise to change any of the game's current behavior.)

In Baldur's Gate's original release in 1998, creatures in most wilderness and dungeon areas would respawn almost immediately after being slain. You walk into a room, kill the kobold in there, walk out of the room, and then a minute later that same kobold is back again shooting your party from behind.

In Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition, most - if not all- of these spawn points were changed to only fire once when encountered; so that once you clear an area of the dungeon, that area is cleared for good. No more painful backtracking on your way back to town to buy more arrows or revive dead companions, but also no more resident creatures once you've completed Firewine Ruins.

Some people preferred the original, more aggressive method, while others enjoy the less punishing style in the Enhanced Edition. Obviously, the people who prefer the current method are less likely to complain, since the current behavior works best for them. For those who prefer the old ways, it may seem like a bug.

I should note right now that the results of this poll will not change what we do in the Enhanced Edition - or I should say, will not necessarily change what we do. I just want to get a broader perspective.

The third option in the poll is to make it so that creatures respawn after an hour of game-time, rather than immediately. This would allow players to backtrack through a cleared area if need be, but would also allow areas to repopulate when the player rests or travels (or simply spends too long in one spot). There's a small sampling of what this would look like here: http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/comment/543193/#Comment_543193

Is Alora's rabbit's foot bugged?

$

I've installed the component of the NPC Project mod that makes Alora available in Gullykin. Although I've taken a look at her in prior games just to check out her new and improved rabbit's foot, this will likely be the first time that I use her in earnest. However, I've read on another site that her rabbit's foot is actually bugged.

http://playithardcore.com/pihwiki/index.php?title=Baldur's_Gate:_NPC_Rundown#Alora
"It's worth noting her lucky charm is supposed to keep her under the effects of luck but is bugged. There's probably some mod out there that fixes it if you want to hunt one down. (If you do, feel free to edit where it is and what it does here!)"

Is this accurate? In what way is/was the foot bugged, and was it ever corrected in a subsequent patch?

I should note that I haven't downloaded the latest patch yet - did that patch address anything related to Alora's foot?

Greetings!

My party personnel keeps on dying to the drow battle in the arena.

What can I do?

My party personnel consists of blackguard, dwarven defender, priest of talos, skald, shadowdancer and a wild mage. My party´s theme is "we´re evil, hail & kill!".

Should I roll a new party?

And you make it sound like it's good news?

I know I will get fireballed for this, but: for me this is bad news. It only means even less resources for the BGII patch which we're waiting for since November 2013 where we still have different versions on all platforms and glaring to gamebreaking bugs. I was an evangelist and had bought four EE versions of BG and BGII. My son is still waiting for the multiplayer I had promised him last Christmas.

No more.

A company that so blatently disregards its existing customers, continously overstretches their resources and is deaf to any argument will ot get any more money from me, at least until they have shown a change of heart and at least three patches for IWD are out (2020 I'd assume going by past performance).

It really pains me to say this but it's time to put my wallet to where my mouth is. I really really loved the company and that they support mac but there is no learning from past mistakes visible at all.

Stealing Everything That's Not Nailed Down

With the help of pharmaceuticals (i.e. Thieving Pots), you can almost deprive whole cities of their wealth. Almost like robbing every house in Manhattan and never getting caught. My question is, is there some role-playing caveats or restrictions that you impose on yourself or your thief in the group (whether it's alignment, need, or something else)?

In my experience, the rush of accumulating so much wealth is fun and all - making sure I nick that last piece of gold from that haughty noble or rude merchant, or selling a pompous merchant an item them stealing it back to sell to a fence. I never rob fences though - it's just bad business, even in real life. At the end of it all, I kinda feel guilty doing it since I like playing the Chaotic Good alignment. There are some instances where I can justify it - the ransom for Imoen at the start of SoA for instance, or maybe buying that item that I really, really want early on in the game. I make sure not to go overboard though.
