Morality & Magic

I have recently been considering rolling an Inquisitor, and while I realize that an Inquisitor is not necessarily opposed to *all* magic, I am still somewhat worried about having one as a party leader from a roleplaying perspective.

I do intend to have mages in my party, most likely Xan and dual-classed Imoen in BG1, but a lot of the effective magic in the game(s) seems to be...Kind of evil, dishonourable and/or cruel. To use a few relatively low level spells as examples:

Blindness:
The mage's version of throwing sand in the opponent's eyes, but far more effective. Robbing someone of one of their most important senses for hours and then killing them while they're having trouble fighting back doesn't exactly seem like the domain of someone dedicated to truth, justice and the Tyrian way. (Or am I drifting into Tempus territory with rules of warfare here?)

Charm/Dire Charm:
Invades the mind of the target and manipulates it to do your bidding. Dishonourable as hell, and of grey morality at best even if used against evil enemies.

Melf's Acid Arrow:
Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't the use of poison kind of banned or heavily restricted for Good-aligned characters in P&P Dungeon's & Dragons? Using poison to win seems dishonourable, and the incredible agony Melf's Acid Arrow causes doesn't exactly seem benign, to say the least.

Stinking Cloud and Cloudkill:
There's a reason why we have the Geneva Protocol in our world. Using poison gas to win while you look at a webbed enemy dying in agony from a distance is not exactly the most righteous of paths.

Any thoughts on using such spells in a good-aligned party led by an Inquisitor (again, from an RP perspective), and if it would be viable to do a trilogy run without magic that my Inquisitor would see as distasteful at best?

How is magic treated in the P&P version of the game? I know that there's alignment restrictions on some weapons like the Dagger of Venom, but I've never heard anything about any magic being put under similar restrictions.

All you wanted to know about the “Adventure Y”

Now with BG2:EE released and we all know about Hexxat at last it’s time to anticipate something new.

So I think the discussion about the “Adventure Y” is going to be the next hit.

There’ve been several threads on this forum about this topic but I will try to gather EVERY piece of information and update it when something new is known. I hope @TvrtkoSvrdlar and others who started topics about the Adventure Y in the past excuse me ;)

A little bit of history first.

Tweets by Trent Oster, 12 May 2012

Adventure X is going to be standalone. Keep your ears peeled for Adventure Y, which is intimately linked to the Bhallspawn storyline

Adventure X is a side adventure, while Adventure Y is an optional storyline piece in the Bhallspawn series

Tweets by Sam Hulick and Trent Oster, 23 May 2012

SH: Listening to the #BGEE Adventure Y main theme on repeat while doing paperwork. Never has something so mundane felt so heroic & adventurous.

TO: I do the same. It can become a liability when the #bgee Adventure Y theme is going hard and you are trying to do contracts.

Later PhillipDaigle tweeted that the Adventure Y can be set at or near Boareskyr Bridge, accidentally the place where Cyric killed Bhaal.

Dee in November 2012 said (http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/comment/142403/#Comment_142403) the "Adventure Y" hasn't been finished yet, and will likely be released post-ship.

Here (http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/comment/369710/#Comment_369710) is said the Adventure Y has been confirmed for after BGE2:EE (release). This post (9 October 2013) is promoted by LiamEsler.

Basically there were no news at all after that.

All of a sudden PhillipDaigle here on the 30th of November 2013(http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/comment/418768/#Comment_418768) said something that can be interpreted as:

1) it’s wrong to think that the Adventure Y is planned for after BG2:EE, or
2) it’s wrong to think that the Adventure Y in not going to be released in the next patch, or
3) it’s wrong to think that the Adventure Y is set after BG2:EE.

We know elminster (a Beta Tester) (http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/comment/346026/#Comment_346026) said the Adventure Y will cost money although in the past Tanthalas (also a Beta Tester, Private Beta Moderator) (http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/comment/14040/#Comment_14040) had thought about the Adventure Y as a part of the new content for EE and not a DLC.

So, we know the Adventure Y is tied with the Bhaalspawn plot and has its own theme.

Taking into account those words about money and realizing the Adventure Y has not been definitely released before BG2:EE it seems reasonable to agree with the 3rd variant and say the Adventure Y is set somewhere before the story of the Bhaalspawn ends.

Moreover, I think it’s safe to conclude from PhillipDaigle’s post the Adventure Y is meant to be content for BG:EE, not BG2:EE.

There’s an idea that the Adventure Y takes place after Sarevok's defeat and shreds some light on those “circumstances much darker than anyone would have thought” under which the Bhaalspawn left for Amn. So this adventure would probably take place between the two games and end with the Bhaalspawn getting captured by Irenicus.

It’s interesting to take into account that TrentOster - after looking (6 September 2013) at a feature request of an interlude chapter that narrates the happenings between Sarevok's ending and the capture of the Bhaalspawn by Irenicus - said “Sounds kind of adventurey. Could be a fun concept.” (http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/comment/350159/#Comment_350159)

One can interpret “adventurey” as “adventure y”.

So, right now it's everything from what has been confirmed.

Battle In The Pits (A Role-Played Black Pits Adventure)

$

So put simply, I wanted to take a crack at doing a role-played play-through of the Black Pits. First of all, here's the team:
Paladin (Cavalier):
Name: Vivienne Lightbringer
image
image
Age: 26
Stats:
STR 18/75
DEX 18
CON 18
INT 12
WIS 13
CHA 18
Bio: Vivienne is a relatively young paladin of Torm. She was born to parents who were both paladins, and she never questioned the fact that she would follow their path. She took to the path with exceptional skill (I was planning for a 93. Then I rolled a 97) and has proven herself a talented member of the order. While resting at the order’s headquarters, she was abducted in the night. She will strive to lead this group with wisdom and skill, and keep the whole team safe in their journeys.

Ranger/Cleric
Name: Eryk
image
image
Age: 32
Stats:
STR 18/65
DEX 18
CON 18
INT 12
WIS 18
CHA 11
Bio: Eryk grew up in a house divided. His mother was a druid, and his father was a cleric of Lothander. Before running away at age 14, Eryk was forced to deal with many arguments over religion. Despite his hatred of these arguments, much of the philosophy of both parents seeped in to him, and in the end he chose a path that neither of his parents would have ever considered. He became a ranger/cleric. He worships both Mielikki and Lothander, and despises the undead with a passion, while believing in the sanctity of nature. His views on good and evil have come mostly from his father, however, and he does not believe in “true balance” like his mother did. He chooses to fight for justice, though most of his life has been spent communing with nature and hunting the undead. He was grabbed in the night as he slept under a tree, and he longs to escape his gladiatorial prison and flee back to the woods which he so loves.

Monk:
Name: Crimson Drake
image
image
Age: 23
Stats:
STR 18
DEX 18
CON 16
INT 12
WIS 12
CHA 10
Bio: Crimson was born a peasant in a small kingdom, and her life was a hard one. Forced to work long hours in the hot sun despite her youth, she was practically resigned to a life of sorrow and early death. One day, however, she saw two men, dressed plainly, walking towards her father and mother. She thought little of this at first, but the four of them talked for what seemed like hours before the two men handed her father a sack of gold and came to her. Her father told her that these were her new brothers, and they would take her someplace where she didn’t have to work in the fields anymore. She didn’t understand what was going on and thought she had been bought by slavers, and so tried to run away. The men showed an incredible agility and caught her, however, slinging her over their shoulders and carrying her away, though they tried to comfort her with their words. All the while she cried out for her parents, half cursing them for selling her, and half begging for their help. Her cries were meaningless, however, as the men carried her away. Eventually she cried herself to sleep, and when she awoke she lay in a soft bed in a stone room. She soon came to learn that her parents had sold her to a temple, where a group of monks lived. They added to their numbers by purchasing children from peasants, so as to help the parents, the children, and themselves. While the life was far more comfortable than she had experienced before, she was still forced to work, training her body and mind. Her name had been Crimson, due to her hair, but now she was given the last name of “Drake” as well, as this temple was known as the drake temple. These monks were her family now, and family they were. She grew strong, and excelled at the things she was taught. She chose to don crimson robes instead of the simple brown ones her fellow monks wore, and became known as the “crimson dragon”. She is a force to be reckoned with, and while kind, she appears incredibly intimidating to strangers. While on a mission to assist a small village near the temple, she was abducted. The monks at her temple worry for her, for the village was burned to the ground and Crimson’s corpse was nowhere to be found.

Bard:
Name: Jiro
image
image
Age: 36
Stats:
STR 18
DEX 18
CON 16
INT 18
WIS 4
CHA 15
Bio: Jiro is a human bard from Kara-Tur. He was originally the son of a noble and was trained in the art of fighting with a katana, however his father was assassinated and he was forced to leave his home. He had always been gifted with music, and so became a traveling musician. He has traveled for many years, but his road has always been peaceful. He’s talented, but quite unwise, having never been forced to do much but wander, fight off weak foes, and perform. Picked from the road while traveling, he has been thrust into the arena. Time will tell how he fares.

Fighter/Mage/Thief
Name: Hawke
image
image
Age: 28
Stats:
STR 18/98
DEX 19
CON 17
INT 18
WIS 6
CHA 9
Bio: Hawke is a drunk, a lecher, and a scumbag, but da** if he isn’t good. While he may be almost as foolish as Jiro, he’s more skilled than any of the rest of the group. He’s stronger than Vivienne, faster than Crimson, and as smart as Jiro. Not to mention he’s more multi-talented than anyone. He can hold his own on the battlefield, in a dungeon, or in a bar, and he’s seen more of the world than any of the others. No one knows much about him, however, as he says little of his past, other than that he’s traveled the world far and wide and seen more marvels and ales than anyone. He figures he was captured by Baeloth because Baeloth wanted a drinking buddy. He wields bastard swords, which he says is an intentional pun, and whether you hate him or not, he doesn’t care. He’ll grin his goofy grin, wink, and laugh.

Sorcerer
Name: Mira
image
image
Age: 21
Stats:
STR 12
DEX 18
CON 16
INT 12
WIS 12
CHA 15
Bio:
Mira is an unusual mage. She’s neither terribly smart, terribly well trained, nor terribly high-class. She was born as the daughter of an elven blacksmith in a small village. From a young age she found she had magical powers, which she thought was interesting enough, but she never indulged them. She enjoyed her life as an attractive young elf woman in a small town. She was to be married to a handsome young cobbler, but the week before her wedding she disappeared. No one knew what had happened, and many wonder if some creature could have taken her in the night.
And here's the opening part of the story. I'll update more tomorrow, but for now I'm just going to post this.

Prologue:
The group appeared in the pit, looking around in utter confusion. Suddenly Jiro pointed and yelled “Monsters!” The group spun around to see three Tasloi charging them. There were crude weapons laying on the ground at the group’s feet, and they quickly grabbed them and prepared to fight. The battle was over quickly, and a djinn appeared, saying that they “qualified” before teleporting them again. They next awoke in a large circular room and slowly stood up as they heard a high pitched voice say “What’s next? Ah! This group. Are they awake yet? Up! Rouse yourselves, you lice-laden layabouts. Stand up and salute your new master, Baeloth the Entertainer!” The group looked up to see a grinning drow standing there, wearing exquisite robes. “Who?..” Vivienne asked. The drow outright ignored her and continued talking. “You may also thank me, since your meaningless lives are about to become infinitely more exciting and quite likely… abbreviated. You have been brought here by an unlucky roll of the die. Well, unlucky for you. Gather some equipment, gird your loins, and prepare to fight. Najim, my obedient slave, take care of them. And don’t forget to give them a little spending money!” With this the djinn reappeared and began to speak. “As my master commands, take these coins. Speak with the dealers gathered here to equip yourselves. Once you are prepared, report to Master Baeloth. Do not attempt to escape lest he command me to snuff out your life.” “Where are we?! What’s going on?! I demand an explanation!” cried Vivienne, now quite furious from being ignored before. The djinn spoke again, no emotion visible on his face. “You have been summoned to this island fortress by Baeloth. We are in a complex known as the Black Pits, dug by Duergar slaves. You are to fight in the battle pits for the amusement of Baeloth’s guests. I have answered your questions, now prepare for battle.” The group looked at each other and sighed. “It seems we have no choice.” Jiro said. Crimson piped up. “Wait! Baeloth said you are his slave. Together we could rise up against him!” Najiim looked down, almost sadly, before responding. “I am bound by an undying geas. Otherwise, I would have slaughtered Baeloth long ago.” Baeloth, now at the edge of the room, turned his head and grinned. “I can heeeeeear you!” Najiim paid him no mind. “Prepare yourself for battle, mortal. When you are ready to face your fate, speak with Baeloth.” Hawke shrugged, grinned, and said “I don’t like it, but I can feel the effects of the geas too. Might as well comply for now.” With this, the djinn disappeared and the group went to the bedrooms to rest and talk. They talked for nearly an hour, sharing each other’s backgrounds, abilities, and opinions on these circumstances. Eventually the group decided that Vivienne was the most qualified to lead them, as she had been trained to lead others, while the rest of them were lone wolves. With this done, Vivienne, Mira, and Jiro went to purchase goods for the group, while the rest of them relaxed in their rooms. They knew little of the harsh battles that would soon beset them... Hey guys. Just wanted to know if this worked in EE (it worked in the original BGI)

Human Fighter (heck, Berserker or Kensai make this even better!)

Go to level 7, with **** in any weapon. Suggestions include Quarterstaff, Scimitar, Long Sword. The other ** go into the appropriate fighting style.

Dual Class to Thief.

When you reach level 8 as a Thief, you can get ***** in your chosen weapon.

If you only plan on playing BGI, this is the best Fighter I can think of. Importing to BGII changes the game, of course. With Grandmastery in a weapon, you have a better combatant than a single classed Fighter.

Does this still work?

Icewind Dilemma

My IWD Heart of Winter copy is lagging desperately even in offline. It seems to just freeze and then proceed as normal again every 5-10 seconds. It's very distracting and dampens my enjoyment of the game, however I see no thread when I Google the dilemma that provides me with a solution. Lacking any other outlet for community aid, I thought maybe I would try my luck here.

Does anybody have any thoughts? I disabled 3D Acceleration, which seemed to be the common fix, but nothing came of that.

Sorry for spamming what is no doubt the incorrect area of the forums, but it felt equally inappropriate to post it as a bug, for it would only be a greater distraction to the developers if it were contaminating their already-heavy workload.

Thanks in advance to any who might offer a helping hand!

What are the Geneva Conventions in Forgotten Realms?

$

So, in a world with magic, demons, and multitudes of gods granting actual powers, *War* could take many disturbing turns. But it is to be expected that the major forces of the 'civilized' world would still agree on what can and cannot be employed in an act of war.

If the major powers of the Forgotten Realms were to agree on rules of engagement, what would they be?

- is all Necromancy detestable?
(A lich scouring the country side with a swarm of zombies is likely not tolerated, but one of the ruling top Red Wizards of Thay is a lich.)

- how about demon summoning?
(Is it okay to use some friendly mephits as helpers in your lab? How about as city cleaners?)

- are Clerics protected during battles?
(in the same way that medics are supposed to be down here)

- Gas attacks (Cloud Kill, Death Fog etc.) are banned, perhaps?

- is mind control considered taboo?
(Dire Charm and Domination to make one kill their comrades)

- is there a limitation on the 'calibre' of weapons used for peacekeeping?
(no greater than +2 enchantment; or non-lethal damage only for city patrol)

- how about biological warfare?
(Contagion, Mold Touch)

So as I'm sure we all know, there are a lot of really cool written play-throughs of the BG saga on these forums. Some of them are very challenge based, while others are more for the role-play. There are several prominent writers of these as well as a few who have just started and only have one or two of their play-throughs up. Sometimes one of the more well known writers will make a new play-through, (example: @Blackraven‌) but someone who reads all of their work will miss it and only find it a week or two later. (example: me) The idea behind this thread is that writers of these "play-throughs" can "advertise" their play-throughs, thus making for easy access for others, as well as a visible and concise back catalogue for new members of the forums. I'm not going to include my own writings in the main post, but I'll place them in the comments, same as you all. The "format" for these would be...

[Title of the thread/character's name/what kind of challenge it is/however else you'd want to title it] [release status i.e complete/BG1 complete/on break/on hiatus/ongoing/etc.]

[Link to first page of the thread]

[short description of the thread]

Any extra details or notes you might want to add beyond the description is up to you, though I don't know what you'd put in that section.

Now, I'm not sure whether to leave this in General Discussion or Challenges and Playthroughs. I think I'll leave it in General Discussion for at least a week, just so it can garner attention. Once that's done I'll toss it into C&P, since it definitely belongs in there.

With all that done, I'm going to tag a few people who I know have written play-throughs on the forums, since they'll hopefully be interested. @Lemernis@Heindrich@lolien@bengoshi@meagloth@MacHurto@BelgarathMTH@SionIV@Aurorus@Gotural@SharGuidesMyHand‌ and Blackraven (previously tagged)

I think the portrait of Jaheira at the bottom right-hand corner of this picture is probably my favorite that I've ever seen. Unfortunately, I've yet to come across a watermark free version.

I found the portrait at this site here: http://forums.blackwyrmlair.net/index.php?showtopic=3645 It was posted by "Kiwi Rose" (Candice Rigby, according to the watermark), who said that she would be posting a watermark-free version at her forthcoming website.

Does anyone know anything about this artist, or where I could possibly find a watermark-free version of this pic?

ranged weapons suffer from +4 penalty to ac when attacked by melee and suffer from +8 Thac0 penalty in melee.

it is very very very very very seriously important information to all gamer. isn't it?

BUT there is nowhere explaining about it. (it is not in the manual and the game)

this information was explained original game loading screen (when I was young, I had seen this and remembered barely after my character died).
loading screen is gone on EE now and THIS information is also gone together, but this mechanism exists even now.

It must be explained at the manual and game tutorial. why does player suffer from hidden game mechanism?
you beamdog should explain this before the newbie suffer from hidden mechanism.

......
edited - additional explanation

smart person could use composit longbow in melee because composit longbow has better Damage Per Round ( (1d6+2) x 2 rate of fire and additional 1 thac0 ) at early game stage than other early game weapons (even better than two handed sword) unless they actually know the melee penalty.

long sword = 1d8 = 1~8
two handed sword = 1d10 = 1~10
composit longbow = (1d6 +2) * 2 rate of fire = 4~14 (actually better high damage rate)

the player could reasonably use ranged weapon in melee if the player don't know melee penalty.
right?
that's why the penalty should be described.

[BG2 ToB] Takin' Saverok or not... That's...

Hi guys!
I guess there's already a lot of threads like this one.
I tried to search for some in the searchbar, but it gave nothing. And, I don't have the patience to look through all the pages.

So, it's the first time I'm playing BG2. I've played a lot BG1 back in the days, but I was such a fool that I never thought that playing with higher level guys will be great. Now, I did BGEE & BG2EE, and I'm beginning Throne of Bhaal. I've got a goody-do-good party who constitues of :

Cheesy Half-Elf Fighter / Mage good with bows and... halberds? (yeah, I know he's such an hipster)
Minsc
Keldorn
Jaheira
Imoen
Aerie

Now, I'm to the point where I need to chose if I take Saverok in or not.
My four spellcasters are really fun and strong to play with when backed with two strong killers. Crazy-guy-with-chipmunk and old-white-suprematist-chevalier are really perfect in those roles.
Minsc is full plate dual-wielding the mighty Crom Faeyr (25 strength, guys, 25) and the best long sword or bastard sword for what's to chop. Keldorn is, of course, wielding Carsomyr, and I find his inquisitor skills so useful (spellcasters have no need of memorizing dispel magic or illusions). For Minsc, I found him fun, but I've read that he have no interesting RP in ToB. Plus, when I SMASHED REAL BAD BLOODY Irenicus, Minsc got beserk and killed Jaheira (in full plate with shield) with his 25 in a few blows. I'm starting to think that maybe I should have let him in his cage in Irenicus Dungeon.

So, I know Saverok have the best skills for any NPC, but he can't match 25, !25! of strength (sorry guys in all my humble games of AD&D, I've never seen a human with a 25). He starts at an lower level, but sure he will level faster than the specialists fighters. But he looks like really more fun in RP than Minsc or Keldorn. And I've read that you can change his alignement to goody-good.

I'm sure a lot of you guys faced this dilemma, and if you're eager to share your experience and advices (I've never played ToB, and didn't do Watcher's Keep, so I don't know what I will face, and which AWESOME weapons I'll find), I thank you very much.

Baldur's Gate Syndrome... A dictionary knows this word

I'm in a strong belief the so-called BG Syndrome is what any of us has. But it seems such a word combination exists in an urban dictionary. Although the meaning is a little bit different it is still hilarious.

Baldurs gate syndrome
The act of constantly quick saving while playing an RPG because you played the original Baldurs Gate game which had a tendency to bug out every five or so minutes.
Per: Make sure you save a lot because when I played Operation Anchorage in Fallout 3 the last quest bugged out for me.

Putte: I suffer from Baldurs gate syndrome so I do that all the time.

After finding this dictionary I've checked several BG-related words and although it gives the standard meanings to such words as Elminster and Drizzt, as well as the game title itself, some word definitions are just LMAO. Here you go then.

Khalid
Name: Khalid meaning immortal. people with this name are amazingly handsome they have a high intelligence level, and are very well endowled. Khalid's are quite modest. Usually wearing hoodies they can get quite aggresive and kill.
Khalid just took a knife out and killed someone over a slice of cake

Drow is "word" spelled backward.

Therefore, a "drow" is a word that becomes a DIFFERENT word, if spelled backward. This is not to be confused with a palindrome, which is a word that reads the SAME backward and forward. Both definitions can be extended to phrases or sentences.

This term was coined by Dr. Benjamin Whang, the father of Suzanne Whang, host of HGTV's #1 show, "House Hunters."
"Stressed" is a drow, because when spelled backward, it becomes "desserts."

"Diaper" is a drow, because when spelled backward, it becomes "repaid."

Since so much has been written about BG2:EE's poor technical state (almost 400 confirmed bugs at last count), I'd like to shift the focus away from that and look at Beamdog's contribution to the games purely on the creative level, figure out what works and what doesn't, and maybe generate some discussion about that.

To do that, I'd like to talk about Rasaad yn Bashir, Neera, Dorn il-Khan, Baeloth Barrityll, Hexxat and Wilson as characters, as storylines, and try to highlight problem spots that - much like gameplay bugs - could potentially be smoothed over and patched.

For this particular installment, we'll be talking about:

Dorn il-Khan

Of the four main additions to the cast (Baeloth and Wilson are, after all, easter eggs), Dorn is, at a glance, the simplest to understand.

What we need to recall, prior to his introduction, is that BG has a very curious approach to representing alignment in-game. On the one hand, the player is almost always penalized for choosing Evil actions over Good: you'll get less XP, less gold, less rewards. This would seem to suggest that the game is not-so-subtly steering you away from actually RPing an Evil character... except that the Evil NPCs are (with some exceptions) among the most powerful ones you'll find. No arcane caster, not even the PC, can match Edwin's Red Wizard bonuses; no cleric has Viconia's high dexterity and innate magic resistance; Shar-Teel can be automatically dual-classed into a very dangerous thief; Korgan's physical strength is exceeded only by Sarevok in ToB.

But while you have more than enough characters for a full party in BG1, BG2 reduces you to three characters in SoA and one more in ToB. And then we have Dorn. Mechanically, it's clear that he's meant to serve as a champion in the mold of Ajantis, Keldorn and Minsc; and, in keeping with the BG tradition, he's far more powerful than his Good counterparts: he can poison greatswords, debuff enemies, drain health... all that and the 19 STR of a half-orc to boot, plus the immunities of the new blackguard kit.

Dorn's introduction in BG1 is a clever bit of misdirection, because your first assumption is that he's just like any other NPC: you find him, you talk to him, you recruit him. But Dorn is in the middle of his own quest, and won't give you the time of day. (He's also voiced by Gord Marriott, who, it must be said, does an absolutely flawless job.)

Now, players may certainly be stumped at this point, since the game doesn't actually provide any hint as to what's meant to happen: a random encounter near Nashkel will reintroduce Dorn properly, and allow you to recruit him. This encounter also sets up Dorn's questline, hunting down a quartet of former companions who left him to die in Luskan.

Here's where we find our first major problem: this encounter allows Dorn to cross two names off his list, cutting his storyline in half before it even begins. Unlike Rasaad and Neera, Dorn's quest doesn't come with any new locations at all: you'll find Kryll in the Gibberling Mountains, and ringleader Simmeon just outside Baldur's Gate. By taking out both Senjak and Dorothea in that first initial encounter, you can't help feeling like the plotline's being fast-tracked.

This sense of "moving too quickly" recurs with the romance subplot - all EE characters can initiate a "prelude" romance that's meant to build into the second game (despite the fact that, at the time of writing, BG2:EE doesn't seem to recognize romance variables set in BG:EE). We should, at this point, recall that a major point of contention with Dorn at the time the character debuted was that he could romance both male and female characters - and while this has spawned long and often-torturous discussions both on this forum and elsewhere, suffice to say that I give Beamdog much credit for taking quite possibly the least-expected - and therefore least-explored - route.

The discrepancy between Dorn, Neera and Rasaad comes up again here, as Dorn's romance concludes on such an abrupt and vague note that many players were left uncertain as to whether they'd actually seen it through to the end. One can, of course, make the argument that Dorn's characterization and the details of his storyline do (and should) set him apart from the conventional approach to romance... but that's probably something that could have been clarified in-game.

Still, for the character that Dorn is designed to be - the one who revels in Evil-with-a-capital-E - it's fair enough to say that he doesn't need pathos or moral ambivalence. Neither does Korgan, after all.

In BG2:EE, after being ordered by his demon patron Ur-Gothoz to pursue more and more dangerous missions, Dorn is approached by a mystery woman named Azothet, who claims she can help him escape his master's chains. One of the nice things about the set-up to this scenario is the player's ability to influence how Dorn carries out Ur-Gothoz's missions: there are several options, meant to conform to the player's own idea of what constitutes Evil. Do you slaughter an entire wedding party, or just take out your target? Do you trick a priest into helping you, or cut him apart? Dorn skirts the edge of being difficult to control, and unlike any other NPC, you can sometimes feel that you have to be careful what you say to him, because the wrong word could cause him to mutiny. Which is, again, perfectly in line with who he is.

Those small choices also play out during the new location assigned to Dorn's quest: Resurrection Gorge. Do you sacrifice a party member to complete a ritual? Do you raise a druid only to cut him down yet again? And then, of course, we get the reveal, and a classic roleplaying choice: do you encourage Dorn to drop his tanar'ri master Ur-Gothoz for the baatezu Azothet, who promises to be a more considerate patron? Do you stick with the demon you know? Or do you take out both would-be patrons, and cause Dorn to lose his blackguard powers altogether?

Unfortunately, the build-up to this choice is a bit flawed. While the player is able to openly distrust Azothet at every opportunity, the reality is that you have very little reason to turn on her until she reveals her true form. Even if she is lying about some or all of what she's told Dorn, Ur-Gothoz is comparatively worse in every way.

Fun bit of trivia: the cambions who emerge to aid Simmeon in BG:EE are named "Thralls of Azothet". In other words, Ur-Gothoz's rival was responsible for empowering Dorn's mortal enemy. This feels like information the player (and Dorn) should have been given before reaching the final area of Resurrection Gorge: when you face that choice of binding either Ur-Gothoz or Azothet, you should know that you're choosing between a demon that openly dislikes you and a mystery woman who has, in the very recent past, directly worked against you. Does that affect your choice? It should.

(As an aside: it's very strange that Dorn receives an item reward only if he sides with Ur-Gothoz against Azothet, and yet his default state in ToB is being Azothet's blackguard - surely she would have given him a different item to compensate?)

Dorn's BG2:EE romance may be abbreviated in comparison to, say, Viconia, but it manages to do a few interesting things that are unique even when taken in the context of BioWare's present-day efforts. There's a whole separate discussion to be had regarding the awful way BG2 originally handled the female love interests - you have to refuse intimacy with Aerie when the subject first comes up in order to continue the romance, and she'll get pregnant the first time you do it; Viconia is on the other end of the spectrum, with some very awkward faux-dominatrix nonsense (and you can, of course, reach such heights of sexual gratification that her alignment changes).

Dorn follows a much less complicated route: he likes sex, and given the life he leads, he'll take his kicks where he can get them. This leads to an amusingly twisted take on Aerie's romance, with an impromptu wedding ceremony that involves bloodletting and promises of divine power. Again, it's not deep, but it's as crazy and over the top as an Evil romance should be.

The wheels come off in ToB, though, for two reasons. While Dorn's quest in Lunia is indeed epic, and again gives the player some interesting choices when it comes to the Scroll of Retribution, a problem emerges with the blackguard-exclusive sidequest to corrupt the Holy Tree. Namely, it contradicts the conclusion of the Resurrection Gorge quest. No matter which patron you choose, that patron will claim that Dorn is too valuable an agent to throw away on pointless suicide missions. And yet both Ur-Gothoz and Azothet will order Dorn to defile a tree in Lunia itself, surrounded by planetars and silver dragons and whatnot, for absolutely no reason. There's no explanation, there's no profit or gain, it's back to where the character began with "Do this thing because I told you to".

The second - and arguably most problematic - issue for Dorn in ToB is his epilogues. Both the default and romanced endings are perfectly logical extrapolations of his characterization: on his own, he pays the price for his many, many crimes; a romance may start out with the PC and Dorn as partners-in-crime, but it's an inherently unstable pairing that inevitably ends badly. So far, so good, despite the fact that Mercy Whitedove should have been introduced at some point in Dorn's storyline, if only to foreshadow where they're heading. The name will mean absolutely nothing to anyone who doesn't play the Black Pits.

The trouble is this: ToB is designed in such a way that if a character chooses to become a god at the very end, the epilogue for their love interest defaults to the non-romanced epilogue. So if you have a child with Aerie, and then choose ascension, her ending won't mention the baby at all. And if you romance Dorn, and explicitly promise to share power with him... he still ends up with the default ending. I don't know if this is a technical limitation, but it's a false choice in which the player is led to believe they're selecting a specific course of action, when in fact all roads lead to one outcome. And this won't be the first time that particular mistake comes up with the EEs.

The same becomes retrospectively true of Dorn's SoA quest: he gets the same ending whether he's a blackguard or free of his patrons. Why, then, would players choose to free him at all, given that it amounts to a net loss (Dorn loses his blackguard powers, the Tree sidequest and any blackguard-specific equipment that may be lying around)? What's the point of offering us a choice if nothing we choose makes a difference? It's baffling that this is the case, given how many smaller choices are woven into Dorn's storyline from the word go, all the different things you can do to complete his objectives.

Still, while the unsatisfying conclusion detracts from Dorn's appeal on the whole, the character still has a lot going for him: a dynamic storyline, top-notch voice acting, an impressive array of abilities, and some very entertaining exchanges with original and EE characters (Dorn, Sarevok and Korgan vowing to lay waste to the next tavern they visit is the sort of thing that makes Baldur's Gate great).

Next time, I'll tackle undoubtedly the most controversial character in the Enhanced Editions: the vampire thief Hexxat.

The Candlekeep Party (spoilers) - including a speed game competition

Note: This idea developed into a speed game competition. For details go to this comment. To see all the characters designed for the competition consolidated onto a single page see here.

I'm considering making a custom multiplayer party of six consisting of Candlekeep residents. Imoen will of course be on the team. I would like to see if I can tie in a few kits that I still haven't gotten around to trying yet.

I can't have anyone higher than level 1, so Firebeard and Tethtoril are out.

In addition to Immy, I was thinking Hull and Reevor as the tanks. I've never used a Dwarven Defender, so I could make Reevor one.

Phlydia feels mostly like a mage to me. Although similarly she could be a sorceress or bard, I guess... I dunno, I was thinking maybe something a little wild and funky like Dragon Disciple Sorcerer, just for the heck of it? I've never tried a Dragon Disciple before. There is a bit of interesting FR lore about what actually lies in the depths of the Candlekeep catacombs. In my head I might tie that in some way to Phlydia:
It does not appear in the game, but the keep is guarded by the ghost of an ancient female silver dragon named Miirym. She is very friendly and may sometimes be found haunting the catacombs and caves beneath the fortress. IIRC (?) I think she may even be a little forgetful, like Phlydia!
The priests of Oghma aren't named... And they don't really have any personalties... So the PC is probably going to have to be a priest of some sort.

One of the monks could be a bard?... Maybe Karan, Parda, or Shistal?

There's Obe the Illusionist, to whom the Gatewarden directs you for training. But I'm going to guess that he would be too high level if he is able to do what he's doing for the tutorial...

Two of Obe's projections (?), Deder and Arkanis, appear in the Candlekeep catacombs--as real persons, evidently. Obi must create his projected images from real people at Candlekeep then? It isn't clear to me whether the party Obe teaches you with is real or projected. Anyway, I've seen threads on using Canderous, Osprey, Deder, Arkanis, and Mordaine before. But using the less obvious residents feels a little more appealing to me at the moment.

Anyway, I guess the party would be then:

CHARNAME (Cleric or Druid; specialty priest?; Fighter/Cleric; Cleric/Mage?) dual-class Cleric/Mage
Imoen (Thief)
Phlydia (Dragon Disciple Sorcerer)
Hull (Fighter)
Reevor (Dwarven Defender)
Shistal? (Bard)
Theodon (Jester)

Anyone want to help with stats? Or make other suggestions?

Stupidest things you have done in Baldur's Gate

So... I just found a cool potion in this game that reminded me of a story from way back when I was like 13. I found this really cool looking potion in one of the bandit camp rooms. It was called an "Oil of Fiery Burning".

"Sweet! Maybe I'll shoot fire out of my hands or become like the Human Torch or something"
gulp
"OUCH!"

BG can be crazy hard sometimes, and when you are young the enormity of the game can confuse you. I also remember being fatigued and thinking how lazy my characters were and another time being shocked that my potion of healing wouldn't cure my poison.

There are so many areas where you can just screw up in hilarious ways as a new player. I'd like to hear some stories like this. Come share your growing pains and have a laugh or two at your noob past selves

The afternoon of DOOM! And it is going to be ICY and WINDY ! ! !

Yesterday @PhillipDaigle‌ said this...
Keep your jorts on, we've got more in the can for tomorrow.
I have also learnt he cannot attend PAX as he needs to be at Beamdog HQ to flick the switch...

Also many reports say that all Gnomes, Elves, Dwarves, Halflings and Orcs should keep their eyes focused on the forums...

What will be revealed?

What switch will be switched?

Will Phillip receive double pay for services rendered on a weekend?

...

The sun has crept past its zenith GMT time... Guess away...
