What would you like to see in an NPC mod.

$

I would like to try to approach this from a bit of a different angle. I have seen many post about what is a “good” NPC or “bad” NPC mod. This approach makes me a bit uncomfortable for several reasons. For one thing it seems to often get boiled down to an intense discussion naming a few different mods that some people have really taken a dislike to. I have even seen people who like such mods being labeled as having “bad taste”. From that point on, I see few other opinions being expressed.

Without giving the name of specific mods, what I would really like to know is what people would like to see more of. If you could write a mod, what are some of the things you would include. Remembering of course, that all peoples opinions are valid.

Just a few examples:
More interactions with other party members.
More personal quests.
Having the NPC fit in nicely with the PC’s quest.
Humor.
More serious situations.
More romance.
Unique NPC equipment.
Unique classes.
Mature content.
PG content.
Or anything else that you have always wanted to see.

Any BG:EE Twitch.tv streamers ?

I noticed there was a thread about streaming BG:EE in twitch.tv, but it's an old topic. Are there any other live streamers still doing BG:EE in Twitch?

Twitch is getting massive and I hope we'll be seeing more streamers for BG:EE, since I've seen so many awesome youtube videos of BG playthrough! :-)

Iam not huge fan of advertising my stuff, but today I started streaming Baldur's Gate. If you're interested, here's the channel; http://www.twitch.tv/heavyline/

Who is the maddest gnome of all?

Ladies and Gentlebeholders,

As we all know one of the most dangerous species ever is
the gnomes.

They tend to get mad, insane, outright crazy and banana.
The question is:

Who is the maddest gnome of all?

This poll is based on the assumption that
Neb and Crazy Celvan are regarded as gnomes, for which
@CrevsDaak looked them specifically up in both games:

"Neb is a Dwarf (checked in BG1:EE) in BG1 and a Gnome that looks like a Dwarf in BG2 (check in BG2:EE), and Crazy Celvan is a Gnome that looks like a Halfling (checked in BG2:EE)."

Note: No gnomes were harmed by the production of this poll. May contain traces of nuts.

Poison immunity does not include spells like Poison and Cloudkill.

Charm immunity does not include Dire Charm or Domination. Who casts just Charm?

I want to be more immune to those things. I've taken the vow of chastity, I've consumed demon poop to build up my immunity. Come on man.

A Dwarf's Journeys Through Loneliness (Solo Dwarven Defender Play-Through)

I wanted to play a dwarven defender solo, so I did. This character is completely meta-gamed, with no role-playing aspects. In fact, I’ll be explaining his activities using short sentences and bullet points. (Well, hyphens, but you get my point) I also won’t be using (many) pictures. I’ll take a few, but for the most part it’ll be just text. He’ll also take party members for specific things that he considers greatly important. (Ex. Imoen for the STR tome) Without further ado, here he is. (Just after leaving Candlekeep)

Treyve Goldbeard (shortened to just Treyve in game for simplicity's sake)
image

So he’s pretty well made from a meta-gaming sense. He does have two points in S&S style, but that’s because he’s a dwarven DEFENDER. I’ll put points into 2W style once we reach BG2, but he’s got plenty of points to go around, being a fighter kit.

As for any sort of bio, he’s basically lacking. He was trained by Arkanis and he’s very powerful. He doesn’t really train for any specific reason, however, he just enjoys it. He figures he’ll live in Candlekeep his whole life, eventually opening a shop or something. He’s a little more intelligent than an average man, and has slightly above average wisdom and charisma as well. The intelligence and wisdom mainly play into his combat strategy, while his charisma is due to his jovial nature and general friendliness. He’s not brilliant or charismatic, but he’s a da** good warrior and a fine dwarf. He studies with Gorion but he’s not exactly diligent. He’s learned the basics of life, and really doesn’t care to read and study any more, especially when the books don’t have any practical application to his life.

So now, onward to the game journaling.

Come suggest some theme songs for each NPC!

For the music lovers out there!
What songs do you guys think would be fitting for each NPC? Share a tune that fits their character, their story or their attitude.

All suggestions welcome!

I'll begin with some:

Due t his marriage difficulties and his wife's name, I'll give Keldorn "Maria, Maria" by Santana. The pain in his voice when he says "Maria!" after his wife says "What if I don't love you anymore?" is just heartbreaking. Also, Manowar's "Heart of Steel" just describes his attitude toward evil perfectly for me
image
image

Dorn must have some kind of song about being badass and evil. The songs "Bad to the Bone" by George Thorogood would fit, but I'm a big metal fan, so I'll give him Iced Earth's "Pure Evil"
image
image

Eldoth just has to be an outlaw country song, so I either have to go with "Didn't Your Mama Tell ya 'bout Boys Like Me" by Montgomery Gentry or for a better song, Iron Maiden's "Running Free"
image
image

Skie would definitely be the Upper Middle Class spoiled girl who totally thinks she's cool for listening to rrap, so I'd have to give her some Kanye (the go-to artist for these people). She's also the totally non-metal sorority girl who constantly misuses Dio's horn sign while listening to Blink 182

Looking to mod the game, but I don't know where to start.

I posted this in the mod section a few days ago and have gotten no response at all. Probably because everyone hangs out here. So I hope you don't mind me bringing it up again, here.

I'm looking to full voice the "ENTIRE" game. This including non-essential NPC's. Due to the fact I personally, have to strain my eyes to read the dialog at all and I'm sure there are others suffering similar to myself. It's not good for your health.

What I "NEED" to find out is, how would I implement my voice recordings into the game, match them up to the dialog being shown on the screen and to each response?

I'm highly motivated to do this. I'd love to get started ASAP and actually make some progress. Though I'm not even sure where to start. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Are Party No-Reload Runs a Challenge?

I've never tried a No-Reload Run before. But I think a solo run might be too difficult. So, to ease myself in, I was planning a No-Reload Run with a party.

Is this still reasonably challenging?

The Candlekeep Collection - seeking feedback on this mod idea (spoilers)

$

(Note: I originally posted this in General Modding > BGEE, and it isn't getting responses there. But this is really more about gauging whether the mod concept offends sensibilities for the end-user, not how to mod it. I'll move this thread back to BGEE mods eventually, but I do want to get a sense from the player base what they think about it.)

Just as a lark I created the Candlekeep Collection to be used for a MP game to provide a tactical challenge. But that got me thinking that one day as a future project I might try to get some further practice with mod-making by taking the next step with this, and add the characters I created as joinable NPCs. They are:

Bendalis
Carbos
Dreppin
Erik
Fuller
Hull
Jessup (I'd have to commit to one of the two versions)
Jondalar
Karan
Parda
Phlydia
Piato
Reevor
Shank
Shistal
Theodon

Please note that for a full-fledged mod all 28 of the traditional NPCs would of course still be joinable as well.

But as I have been conceiving it, the mod would:
 • Via patching replace the Candlekeep versions of the characters with my versions as joinable NPCs.
 • Do away with the fetch-it quests and the assassination attempts before departing Candlekeep.
 • IIRC the only characters from among the collection scripted to interact with the party are Theodon, Jessup, Bendalis, and Piato (in Chapter 6 of course). (Karan and Parda wouldn't spawn in the Prologue because the assassination attempts by Shank and Carbos are removed.) I would place those characters somewhere on the Candlekeep grounds in the Prologue; and in their locations within the library per the game if they are not selected as party members at the start. Those four monks would be scripted to respawn as joinable NPCs inside the library if they are not among the party members. And any of the joinable NPCs that weren't added to the party would still be there on the grounds, of course.
 • The scripts that Bendalis and Piato have to speak with the party I would assign to other monks on the same floor.
 • Remove the characters' dopplegangers in the eight side-rooms of the catacombs around the great hall where all the skeleton archers are. (I suppose I could replace them with the Chanter, the four Voices (of the cardinal directions), the two priests of Oghma, and the Gatewarden. But, really, those doppelganger encounters don't really add that much to the game imho. If only Winthrop, Gorion, Elminster, and Tethtoril appear down there as per the game that would be fine, I'd say... I would probably then relocate Winthrop to some place before Elminster, Gorion, and Tethtoril are encountered.
Now, it has been pointed out to me that it would be preferable to simply add the interactability as joinable NPC in order to avoid conflicts with other mods. And because a basic principle that many modders adhere with is to never change original content, only to add to it.

I dunno, though. Maybe this is heretical of me, but after the first playthrough I don't see the original content provided by each of these characters (although endearing) to be terribly significant to the game. I know that if I were to play with a mod like this, I would prefer to just replace the characters with the playable NPCs.

What are your thoughts about the sanctity of original content versus offering a more strongly modified version of the game that removes their original content?

What kind of familiar would *you* become?

By a strange twist of fate you are forcefully teleported into the mids of the Baldur's Gate Trilogy. Stranger still is that you're not even a person anymore... but an familiar; summoned by some greenhorn spellcaster you never met or heard of before. Life sucks!

The rules are simple: choose the familiar which would most likely represent your personality, habits, or any other connection you may feel between yourself and your soon-to-be alter ego and vote for it. That's all!
Please note that the choices presented within this poll are not meant to be influenced by whether special abilities they have at their disposal in the games. So don't let them hinder your choice. ;)

To the Roleplayers amonst us: Feel free to slip even deeper into the role of those buggers by conjuring a little side story to share with others. Or drop a line as to why you did vote for whatever creature you made if you feel like it. The choice is yours!

In my case, I'd probably become a Dust Mephit... summoned up by some good-for-nothing Transmuter in the middle of nowhere. Not because I smoke, mind you (I don't... at least not anymore). But more like due to their grim and yet humorous outlook on life. There would be so many opportunities to display my sarcastic, black humour in such an situation.
And from the looks of it they seem to appreciate coffee and black tea. So there's that too!

Why does the "Enhanced Edition" engine suffer the same indignities as the original?

$
0
0
I know it's probably too late to cry over spilt milk, but didn't the devs have access to the source code fully?
Many issues of the original could have been fixed at the engine level (which many mods try to bypass with TobEx or whatever).

Some pet peeves of mine as example:

- Thieves cannot sneak AND search at the same time
(as per: http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/33957/how-the-hell-does-one-thief-sneak-or-search-really )

- multi-class combo limitations (I *really* wanted to make a Sorcerer/Paladin -- and damn the cheese!)

I'm sure others will chime in with occurrences of "engine doesn't let it" (even though, e.g., IWD2 had improvements over BG2 in terms of engine capability).

The tale of a Drow (no-reload)

It is a dark time for the forum, the recent inactivity has caused fear and lack of no-reload playthroughs to read. In a world where @bengoshi‌ 's hero, Yahiko, is still nowhere to be found and @Blackraven‌ hasn't been illuminating us with one of his run for weeks ...

Some forumites started to lose hope, the prophecy of the return of summer and the World Cup at the same time is fulfilled once again.

But someone will try to stand up once again against this monster of a challenge that is SCS no-reload, he already failed in the past, but he is still going to give everything he has.

It will be hard, many rough fights await, but he is going to play his favorite game with passion and in difficulty lies joy and fun.

Rules and mods:

-Solo
-No-Reload
-Insane difficulty at all times
-Completionist
-Start with 1 reputation and can't earn reputation through donating
-SCS (full prebuff for casters)
-Item Randomiser
-BG2 Tweaks
-aTweaks
-Rogue Rebalancing
-IWDification
-BG1 casting sounds
-Dark Horizons (Blind)
-T'was a slow boat from Kara Tur (Blind)

To face this difficult challenge, I present you Yami, a 108 roll Neutral-Good Drow Berserker/Wild Mage/Shadowdancer because why not ! Let's see if a character this powerful can be enough to overcome the challenge.

image

Living as a Drow in the realms is far from easy. Even when you are raised by a powerful and respected Mage in a small closed library. The folks here started to trust Yami and to consider him as a good fellow. He was truely kind-hearted, something that wasn't common with the others members of his race. He learned the art of magic with his foster father, Gorion had a lot of hopes for him even if sometimes his innate power was bursting, he practiced his swordmanship with the watchers and played a lot with Imoen during his youth. He was kind of a jack-of-all-trades and had a strong inner will.

He is specialized (** pips) in Dagger and Scimitar. Being a Berserker, he can't assign more than 1 pip in a ranged weapon, so he is actually throwing daggers. He started his mage career with Sleep and Find Familiar memorized and his Thief career with 30 points in Open Lock.

In Candlekeep, Yami did all his chores and picked some chests, most notably those in the Inn. He looted a very beautiful sapphire which was worth 1.000 gold. He also encountered some bounty hunters, Shank and Carbos weren't threats. After speaking with them, Yami simply threw a dagger, which was fatal. However, he also met another guy in the basement ...
image

After a Sleep spell.

image
Maybe he was the source of the rat infiltration in the fortress. Anyway, Gorion was right, this place was becoming too dangerous and Yami decided to join his foster father and to flee Candlekeep. He spoke with Imoen before, she wanted to travel with him but knew Gorion wouldn't permit it.

Gorion told him that they were going to travel this night if they could. The shadows would help them to escape, unobserved.

This was but a terrible mistake.

After 4 hours of walking, they were ambushed by a group of bandits. They wanted Yami at all cost, but Gorion refused. After he yelled to flee, Gorion started to cast some powerful spells and dispatched most of them. But in the end, the armored figure slayed him. Hidden in a tree, Yami saw all the scene and he was destroyed. The man who raised him, gave him education and a chance to live in this ruthless world was taken away from him. A part of him died at the same time Gorion felled to the ground. He didn't even know why they were after him and why Gorion had to pay the cost of his ignorance ...

Cav vs. Cleric/Wild Mage

$

I've been playing two runs concurrently. One with a Cleric/Illusionist (that I will switch to a Cleric/Wild Mage in BG2 using SK) and the other with a Cav. I don't want to keep switching between games, but I'm still having trouble deciding which run to finish.

The Cav (with Jah, Minsc, Yoshi/Imoen, and Aerie): Great front liner. He's really a one man wrecking crew. In a way, this is a bad thing, as I want to play a more team-oriented game. One of his pros are that he'll be able to use Lilarcor in BG2 (my favorite weapon in the game) until get gets the holy avenger. In general, I like the fighter bling over the mage bling, so I'm more interested in gearing him up than my cleric/illusionist. I'd have him on Two-handers, Minsc dual wielding, and Jah on scimitar/club and shield until the better staffs become available. He's not a good team player, though. He's a better tank than Jah and only a slightly worse striker than Minsc. The way this plays out is that Jah ends up hanging out and I end up tearing up everything, occasionally with Minsc's help. On some maps, I just send the paly around to take out everything if I'm not feeling patient. Also, if I keep him, I have to take Aerie for BG2, as this party doesn't have a controller and she's the best (aside from a properly built charname). Taking Aerie, in my book, is a con, as she's so annoying. Still, the paly is much more uber than the C/WM, and he gets a lot more play (see below).

Cleric/Wild Mage (with Jah, Minsc, and Yoshi/Imoen): Definitely more of a team player. For BG2, the core party is just going to be Jah (tank), Minsc (striker), and him (controller). I'll also have Yoshi as a trap monkey until I get Imoen back. With these three, I have the team synergy trifecta. However, most encounters are just Jah drawing aggro and Minsc dancing around the melee chopping things up (max DW), while my guy is just hanging out. Or, if it's an easy map, Minsc just runs around all choppy-choppy. All it took was a single prot. from pet. spell and he cleaned out the basilisk map all by himself (minus the Kirian party encounter). The C/WM only needs to get play for the more challenging encounters, so it's kinda boring most of the time. The harder the fight, the more fun the C/WM is. With a hard fight, the C/WM is more fun than the paly, but those are pretty much just the occasional boss battles.

So, how about voting to help me make a decision on this? :D And, if you care to explain your choice, I'd like to hear it.

The Tale of the Totemic Druid

Inspired by this tread and thanks to @bbear here I’m going to tell a story about Karasu no Yoru, a totemic druid raised in the Candlekeep and destined to become a major figure in the history of the Sword Coast.

The name of the character is in Japanese and means his name actually is Yoru (night) and he comes from the Karasu (crow) clan known for shamans and spirits.

Here's the character sheet at the start of the game.
image
The main incentive is to find out what it takes to successfully solo the whole game (from the start of BG:EE to the end of BG2:EE) with the totemic druid. There’s a discussion about which class is the hardest for a solo run in that thread and it seems many people vote for a druid. So I’ve decided to test it and will gladly write about it for those who are interested in the concept.

I’m playing on the Core difficulty and here’s my weiDU log:

I consider myself an experienced player, had different playthroughs in the past but have never tried the totemic druid. This kit seems interesting to me because it shows the true, from my point of view, nature of a druid – a summoner. In the past I played as an Avenger and liked it much but the Avenger feels more like a druid/mage, while a Shapeshifter obviously feels more like a fighter/druid. A vanilla druid is fine as well but I just like using a kit and not a vanilla version (if it’s not a dual- or multi-class). So, the totemic druid it is.

I understand the problems that can arise because of the SCS but I hope that my knowledge of the game will help to overcome these difficulties. I seriously think that with some meta-gaming even the power of SCS can be not so dangerous. I think than so bad (yeah) thing as the meta-gaming needs serious countermeasures such as not OP class, not min-maxed stats, smarter AI and so on.

As a rule, I try to role-play my character and his party as much as I can but this time it will be different. And I’m so excited – it’s a challenge, and a good one. I’ll try to play a no-reload run with an option for minimal reloads if the character will be killed but I will feel myself attached to it. Also, your reactions, ideas and just a general discussion is much appreciated ;)))

What is the most powergaming party that you can think of?

two different groups of posts
1) multiplayer created party by player. What classes/races (and items)
2) charname + npc's. What npc's
-this is not 1 vs 2 but creating 2 different threads for 1 purpose is silly
-bg2 tob exp limit
-no mods

and why is this the most powergaming?

for example
F/M/T half-elf - like kensai mage but +100dmg with backstab
Kensai13/Mage - i think everyone know why kensai/mage
cleric/specjalist mage - healer who is almost immortal
mage slayer13/mage - antimage
edwin - most spells

npc's
F/M/T op op
sarevok dualed to mage op
edwin - op op op
aerie - op multi
keldorn - op dispell
Cernd - SS f yeah

like you can see I prefer magic :)

Should "barbarian" have been a ranger kit?

I figure most people probably won't agree with me on this, but I'll at least try to make my case anyway.

Since EE was released, I've been wanting to play BG1 as a barbarian (and even moreso now that I've found this portrait here:
image), but I've always had trouble trying to RP as a barbarian. The most troublesome aspect is probably the fact that your character wasn't actually born among barbarian tribes, but rather, was raised in a secluded library fortress and then "adopted" the lifestyle of a barbarian after a chance encounter with one (which really should make the character a berserker rather than a barbarian, based on their respective kit descriptions). IMO, that kind of background suggests that being a barbarian isn't merely having the misfortune to be born in remote northern lands, but that there's actually some sort of greater purpose to being one.

I've never quite understood how an "elective" barbarian should behave toward others - should I be naive and foolish, gruff and nasty, etc.? But I began to think that being a barbarian would make more sense (at least from an RP perspective) if it was a ranger kit instead. There does appear to be some overlap between rangers and barbarians (they both have a certain connection with nature, for example), and many people here (including myself) will argue that Minsc would more appropriately have been a barbarian than a ranger (again, from an RP perspective). IMO, being a ranger kit would give a barbarian a greater sense of purpose (i.e: protecting nature, guiding and defending lost travelers, etc.). The fact that a barbarian has armor restrictions would also fit in well with the other ranger kits. From a mechanical perspective, it would also mean that a barbarian would begin as specialized in dual wielding, have a racial enemy, and eventually gain druid spells. On the flipside, it would also mean that a barbarian would be restricted to good alignments, and human and elven races - which would probably be enough to turn most people off of this idea.

Still, is there anyone here who shares my view on this, at least from a purely RP perspective?
