Before anyone asks. Yes, I'm, at least, level 5 (Level 7 Kensai-> Level 5 Mage) and I've been to Larswood before. I've tried console commands to force it, but it always tells me the file doesn't exist. I've used the console before to get the Elven Chainmail for Eldoth after it didn't appear, but none of the commands I've found for Baeloth work. They always tell me the file doesn't exist

How the hell does one *thief*? (sneak OR search, really?!)
This has annoyed since the release of the original game:
If you are sneaking you cannot search for traps. If you are searching you stop sneaking. (Though there is a few seconds of delay when you can do both, if you don't mind repeatedly switching.)
How do *you* thief?
I just don't know how to.

Random Question: Symbol, Death: Is it worth it?
I am not sure if a thread about this exists, but I don't think enemies in the majority of BG2 have less than 60 hit points. So my question is, is it worth it?

Another solo playthru - What to choose?
Hi there.
Been a while since I've been soloing stuff in BG1+2. Most of my solo playthrus happened as a Sorcerer or F/T/M. I do even remember attempting a solo run as a Blade (who became quite powerful later on). Also went for a Kensai/Mage, tho it became quite boring later on.
So far, I was playing on normal difficulty. Soloing is a hell easier than it should probably be. But my next solo run will definately be on insane difficulty, as my first really big challenge. I am trying to run BG1 -> BG2:ToB straight and it's my goal to kill and achieve everything that's kill- and achievable in game.
Any advices, which class/combination I should pick? Some guy told me that high-end Palas are unstoppable, since they are even able to vaporize Liches and other high undeads. I guess this also applies to high-end Clerics, since they are even better considering divine stuff, lol.
What about a human berserker who duals at some point (lvl 7 probably?) and becomes a cleric? It makes independant considering alignments (not that it would be such a big deal at all, but I don't run the danger to loose Pala stuff once I did bad stuff).
Besides the powers to vaporize undeads 'n stuff... Any other recommendations? As allready mentioned, I've already tryed Kensai/Mage, F/T/M Multi and Blade.

The Most Underrated Spells
Every BG guide says that Abi-Dalzim's Horrid Wilting, Magic Missle, Time Stop and Skull Trap are all great spells. But what do you guys think are underrated spells, irrespective of level?
I'm trying to change my spell strategy to become more diverse and interesting. I've finished the game before by spamming ADHW and skull traps until the cows come home, but want to expand my tactics.
From my own experimentation, I've noticed that Ray of Enfeeblement is a great spell (for BG:EE, at least) that isn't really hyped up in the BG guides. A few times I've noticed that when Jaheira is being pounded by an ogre or whatever (no, not in *that* way - you pervert), a Ray of Enfeeblement spell really neutralises his attack so that he induces minuscule damage. This is sometimes way more helpful than a Magic Missile or Chromatic Orb.
Any recommendations for underrated spells (divine or arcane) that I should try out?

Crazy Ideas
I wanted to start a discussion of bold, risky but possibly fruitful ventures.
WHAT IF, you dual-classed your mage at 18 into rogue? THAT would be interesting. But man, starting from level 1 (THEN AGAIN, in BG2 leveling will not take long for 1-7 since you get much more exp throughout the game, but it isn't much for higher levels). Instead of rogue-to-mage, you can get one level 9 spell, a distant list of spells and by the time your rogue reaches 19 you can be equipped with a POWERFUL list of spells and some powerful rogue attributes. Sure, it'll take a massively long time, but at least it won't take as long as leveling a pure-class mage to 31. I think, although you lose some of the benefits of mage power, you can eventually have a rogue with its HLAs and some magic to boot. BUT in bg2, it is a risky venture. And some might resort to power-gaming and import into a new game or black pits and level up that way before importing back into the original save. Which is disappointing if you do so, but I wouldn't blame them entirely.
Also, Mixing a Wizard Slayer with thief. Sadly, you can't use equipment that would provide good sneaky boosts, but the magical resistance can help make up for the thief's inability to use really good armor, and if you specialize the thief in hide in shadows and move silently, you can possibly make a great backstabber, especially against mages. This is assuming it is possible (haven't tried).
If you have ideas besides dual-classing, I'd like to hear them.

Baldur's Gate Jeopardy!
Dear Ladies and Gentlehamsters,
welcome to the Reverse Question Thread, or
"Baldur's Gate Jeopardy" if you like.
In this thread I want users to provide answers.
But without any questions asked beforehand.
Instead it works the other way around.
You present answers and the others must find
appropriate questions that fit your given answer.
Example: Answer: "Boo"
Possible Questions: "Who's the cutest miniature space giant hamster?"
"What's the name of Minsc's animal companion?"
"What is Oob spelled backwards?"
Please post only one new answer at a time.
However you may post several questions to all answers given so far in this thread.
Answers and questions have to be Baldur's Gate related.
I'll start first:
Answer: "Plug tails"
Now it's your turn to think of questions that fit that answer or to provide
a new answer.
Have fun!
for clarification: You can provide questions to old, given answers as many as you like.
The rule above just says that you must not provide more than one new answer at a time.
for example: You do not always have to provide a question to the latest answer.
Just provide questions to any previous answers you like.

If BG came out today...
We have a successful You know you're playing too much Baldur's Gate when... thread.
Recently, having seen a post by @terzaerian , another idea of a thread came to me.
So, if BG came out today...
1. Each stronghold would have been a $25 piece of DLC
2. Steam would explode with 1 000 000 000 of people currently playing BG
3. People would name their children "Sarevok" and "Shar-Teel"
4. There would appear 1000+ mods about cars, underwear and bras on the Sword Coast
5. We would have the proper TV series about the Iron Throne

Never Finished ToB; Let's do This
I've beaten BG1 and SoA multiple times but never got around to going through ToB. Now that I have BG2EE I'm going to remedy that. I don't have time for marathon playing sessions like when I was younger so I don't want to have multiple games or multiple restarts this time.
Help me choose between a couple of ideas I have for my current play through.
Option 1:
Charname Skald
Korgan, later replaced with Keldorn
Minsc
Yoshimo, later replaced with Imoen
Aerie
I'll use the sixth spot for npc's when I do their respective quests but probably only keep five for chapter four and beyond.
Option 2:
Charname thief/mage multi class
Korgan/Keldorn
Minsc
Aerie
Then use npc's for their quests and eventually pick up Imoen.
I've beaten SoA with an Inquisitor, Archer, Kensage, and a Kensai/Thief. As you can see, the characters I created before were usually getting over 80% of the kills. I was wanting to use a character in more of a utility role this time for something different.
I know I could beat SoA with the groups I mentioned but was wondering if they would work well in ToB.
Thanks for any advice.

The Candlekeep Party (spoilers) - including a speed game competition
Note: This idea developed into a speed game competition. For details go to this comment. To see all the characters designed for the competition consolidated onto a single page see here.
I'm considering making a custom multiplayer party of six consisting of Candlekeep residents. Imoen will of course be on the team. I would like to see if I can tie in a few kits that I still haven't gotten around to trying yet.
I can't have anyone higher than level 1, so Firebeard and Tethtoril are out.
In addition to Immy, I was thinking Hull and Reevor as the tanks. I've never used a Dwarven Defender, so I could make Reevor one.
Phlydia feels mostly like a mage to me. Although similarly she could be a sorceress or bard, I guess... I dunno, I was thinking maybe something a little wild and funky like Dragon Disciple Sorcerer, just for the heck of it? I've never tried a Dragon Disciple before. There is a bit of interesting FR lore about what actually lies in the depths of the Candlekeep catacombs. In my head I might tie that in some way to Phlydia:
It does not appear in the game, but the keep is guarded by the ghost of an ancient female silver dragon named Miirym. She is very friendly and may sometimes be found haunting the catacombs and caves beneath the fortress. IIRC (?) I think she may even be a little forgetful, like Phlydia!
The priests of Oghma aren't named... And they don't really have any personalties... So the PC is probably going to have to be a priest of some sort.
One of the monks could be a bard?... Maybe Karan, Parda, or Shistal?
There's Obe the Illusionist, to whom the Gatewarden directs you for training. But I'm going to guess that he would be too high level if he is able to do what he's doing for the tutorial...
Two of Obe's projections (?), Deder and Arkanis, appear in the Candlekeep catacombs--as real persons, evidently. Obi must create his projected images from real people at Candlekeep then? It isn't clear to me whether the party Obe teaches you with is real or projected. Anyway, I've seen threads on using Canderous, Osprey, Deder, Arkanis, and Mordaine before. But using the less obvious residents feels a little more appealing to me at the moment.
Anyway, I guess the party would be then:
CHARNAME (Cleric or Druid; specialty priest?; Fighter/Cleric; Cleric/Mage?) dual-class Cleric/Mage
Imoen (Thief)
Phlydia (Dragon Disciple Sorcerer)
Hull (Fighter)
Reevor (Dwarven Defender)
Shistal? (Bard)
Theodon (Jester)
Anyone want to help with stats? Or make other suggestions?

A Title for your Party
Hey everyone,
as I'm following the news about Dragon Age: Inquisition I noticed that the devs gave parties consisting of different members various titles.
As such they talk about:
"• Team 'Humans Are Crazy': Elf (possibly elfquisitor but maybe could be the two elf companions), Iron Bull, Varric.
• Team 'Crushed Expectations': Solas, Sera, Cole.
• Team 'Talking, But Not To Each Other': Sera, Viv, Cole.
• Team 'YOLO': Iron Bull, Sera, Dorian.
• Team 'Mutually Respectful Moral and Theological Debate': Cole, Cass, Solas.
• Team 'Vulgar': Sera, Iron Bull, Blackwall.
• Team 'Grim Determination or Team Maker’s Breath Will You Stop Talking about the Jousting?': Varric, Blackwall, Vivienne.
• Team 'I Swear I Will Pull this Inquisition Over Right Now if You Don’t Stop': Cass, Sera, Cole."
I thought it would be funny if we did the same for our Baldurs Gate 1 and 2 parties.
So who would be in Team "YOLO" in Baldurs Gate? Or Team "Vulgar" ?
Of course you can make up any new title for any possible combination of NPCs.
I'd start with the obvious one.
Team "Canon": Imoen, Jaheira, Khalid, Minsc, Dynaheir

Was the original BG this ridiculous? (ambush by ~40 kobolds)
So, if you rest in Firewine area with a party of lvl 6-7 you can get ambushed by a sea of kobolds (almost 40 of them).
This... breaks immersion. I mean a few are fine, but that many?!
I don't remember this kind of "level scaling" in the original. Perhaps it should be toned down...
(Well, to be honest, one Fireball to the face still clears ALL of them [you may want to keep one front liner in place to delay the tide]. But it's still annoying.)

Baldur's Gate Alphabet
While I've been reading this, I've thought about making a new thread where we can make a new alphabet - the one which every BG fan knows.
If there're several variants per one letter, the community will evaluate each one and by the number of reactions it will be evident which variant is the best.
Let the new forum game begin!
So, let me start:
A - Amelyssan
B - Baldur's Gate
C - Candlekeep

Is it possible to Solo Level 1 the BG Saga?

-Fighter for equipments
-Mage for scrolls and wands
-Thief for Find Traps, backstab, pickpocket
-Alignment: Chaotic Good, Find Familiar: One that has invisibility 10 Radius
-All Thief Points to Find Traps -> 55 + drink Potions of Perceptions
-18/00 Str can break locks -> 45 + occasional knock spells / drink Potions of Master of Thievery
-Starting HP = 15, +12 from Find Familiar, +4 from Larloin's Minor Drain, +1d6 from Vampiric Touch (special), +5 from Helmet of Balduran, Max HP ~ 40
-BG2 lose Vampiric Touch, but gain Armor of Balduran +4 HP
-Pips Longsword++, Longbow++
BG1 THACO:
-Range (max) = 2/0: +3 from Dex 19 / +5 from Dex 24, +1 Specialization, +1 Helm of Balduran, +2 Bracer of Archery, +3 Bow of Marksmanship, +4 Arrow of Piercing, +4 Potion of Power
-Melee (max) = 8/4 : +3 from Str 18/00 / +7 from Str 25, +1 Specialization, +1 Helm of Balduran, +1 Gaunlet of Weapon Expertise, +2 Longsword+2, +4 Potion of Power
BG2 THACO
-Range (max, Dex 24) = -1/-2, Same as BG1, replace Bow of Marksmanship with Elven Court Bow +4 THACO, Tarlash Bow +5 THACO, THACO actually increases because some enemies require +2 or +3 arrows (arrow of piercing is normal or +1 weapon?)
-Melee (max, Str 24) = 4/2, Same as BG1, replace Longsword+2 with Blade of Roses +3/Blackrazor +3, Angurvadal +5
-BG1 Strategy: Wand of Summoning/Fire/Cloudkill + Archer, occasional elemental/magic resistance from green scrolls/potions
-BG2 Strategy: Wand of Summoning/Fire, Simularcum + scroll exploits (helmet with 1 free casting per day), occasional elemental/magic resistance from green scrolls/potions
-ToB Strategy: Clay Golem (immune to all except death spell/blunt weapons), Wand of Summoning, Simularcum exploit, occasional elemental/magic resistance from green scrolls/potions
-I foresee that this setup should be able to overcome all storyline encounters except the Amelissan final battle. The only problem in this battle is the initial setup. Amelissan likes to summon a lot monsters and my solo PC will be overwhelmed.
-The only other difficult challenge is the level 3 Watcher's Keep where you have to face at least 1 demons encounter.
-I may miss equipments that can further enhance my PC survival and THACO.
Questions:
-Does a level 1 simulacrum clone automatically die because a level drain of level 1 = level 0?
-Is longsword the optimized melee weapon for the BG saga? I think a shield is necessary for AC purposes and longswords have the most variety, availability and effects.
-How to tell whether a monster deals blunt or slashing attack? It's trivial for opponents that use weapons. What about trolls, werewolves, mindflayers, demons, etc? Stab animation = piercing? Claw animation = slashing? Punch animation = blunt?

-How to tell whether a monster deals blunt or slashing attack? It's trivial for opponents that use weapons. What about trolls, werewolves, mindflayers, demons, etc? Stab animation = piercing? Claw animation = slashing? Punch animation = blunt?
