Something is up with to hit rolls

I turned on displaying to hit rolls because I have a character missing way more than they probably should. As near as I can figure, the first number is the roll, and the second number is the bonus to the roll. I have a base THAC0 of 19, adjusted to 17 for my current weapon. My strength is 18/04, so that should be an extra +1 to hit, and I'm specialized in the weapon. Yet, my to hit rolls say roll + 0. Meanwhile, Imoen has a +2 and both Jah and Khalid have +3s.

Can anyone figure this out? Thanks.

The no reload challenge (spoiler warning)

One of the most fun thing to do in BG is to play with no reload.

The point of the thread is for you to describe your attempts (failed or successful)

I'll start with mine (i just list the significative attempts, not the ones in which i died after 5 minutes). All these playthrough were on core rules difficulty (save for leveling, to get max hp)

- Fighter/mage/thief. Solo. Died in baldur's gate (level 5/5/6) from the mages upstairs of the magical shop (forgot their were casting horror...)
- Berserker. Solo. Died at level 6 from an ankheg, ambushing me while resting
- Inquisitor. In group of 4 (imoen, minsc, viconia). Still in progress (in cloakwoods)
- Berserker / mage (dual 7/8). Solo. Sill in progress (in catacombs at candlekeep). I should succeed it with this one (unless i do something dumb), as he is now 7/8 and almost unkillable (berserker kit is awesome)

My next try will be a solo sorcerer.

Some advices for those who want to try it :
- i find solo play easier than group play (as defense is paramount in no reload, and much easier to get on one character than on 6)
- very good knowledge of the game is necessary.
- when playing solo, never roll to save against a deadly effect (paralysis, horror, charm....) -> you need to get immunities (potions, items, abilities, spells) or you will die.
- always have an invisibility potion ready, as a panic button

Complementing the canon party

I'm probably overthinking this, but after 16 years of this game, one digs deeper. :P

I'm currently running through two different characters (kinda switching back and forth). My plan is to finish BG1 with one of them, then take them through BG2. I'm also planning to stick with -only- the canon party, taking along BG2 NPCs only as necessary to do their quests. So, for BG1, it's Imoen, Jah, Khalid, Minsc, and Dynaheir. Then, for BG2, it's just Jah, Minsc, and Yoshi->Imoen.

The two characters I'm running are a cleric/illusionist and a Cav. The BG1 party is doing a lot better with the Cav. In fact, he's stealing the show. The Cav tanks, while Minsc (with dex gauntlets) and Khalid are on archery support. The girls, otoh, don't really have anything to do. Imoen -can- help with a bow, but it's not even needed. I can put Jah on a sling, but at 1 APR for maybe 1d4+1, it's like a poor man's first level magic missile.

I have the opposite problem with the cleric/illusionist. Jah has the dex gauntlets and is tanking. Minsc is set up to be a dual wielding striker and I send him in after Jah draws the aggro. Khalid is on bow with minimal help from Imoen. If my cleric/illusionist can work a sleep spell, then we're golden. Otherwise, I'm just hanging out with Dynaheir occasionally tossing out a blindness or magic missile. I think I'm eventually going to have way too much spellcasting in this party, as I'll also be dualing Imoen. So, that's effectively 2.5 mages for a level spread where mages are at their weakest.

I'm trying to decide who I want to keep developing. For BG2, I'll have Jah and Minsc, both solid frontliners. Jah's stats are better suited for tanking. Minsc can still be a good striker. I'll have Yoshimo for BS and archery (for whatever the latter is worth). You would think that the C/I would be the easy choice but it isn't. The way I see it, mages are decent strikers, but they make even better controllers. In that regard, I can have that covered when I get Imoen back (which I plan to do pretty much ASAP). Futhermore, with this party, I'll have nobody on 2h swords, and I would especially have to pass up the holy sword. By mid- to late-game, I thinking that a jacked up paladin is going to contribute more than the 1/2 cleric & 1/2 mage. With the paly, Imoen can be on controller duty, while the three of us can hack away.

I should mention that, if I stick with the C/I, I'm going to SK him into a Cleric/Wild Mage at the beginning of BG2. The concept is that Irenicus' experiments twisted his magic powers, which is why he has the wild surges. So, I'll have access to necromancy, but also have the risk of wild surges. This doesn't worry me too much because when I play a WM, NRD tend to be my favorite first level spell.

Anyway, I think if I go with the C/I, BG1 will be a little rough with the mage overkill. I think the C/I will be a real asset in BG2 until I get Imoen back, then we might have some redundancy. However, with the Cav, I'll mow through BG1 with a party as dead weight, and probably still hog the spotlight in BG2. Though, I'll have no arcane support until I get Imoen back.

I know either would work, but what I'm optimizing for is team synergy (not necessarily uber-munchkiness). I don't want charname to hog the glory, but I also don't want him to be redundant. Perhaps neither is a terribly good fit with these party plans and I should consider something else? Anyone care to weigh in?

Noob's Guide to Custom Portraits

I recently purchased and downloaded BGEE and BG2EE. I am wondering how a player can use custom portraits for the single player game. I remember in the original games, all you had to do was make a portraits folder in the game's folder and have a .bmp file of two different sizes. Where do they go now, what size, and what format?

Thanks for any reply, and sorry if this is answered someone else. The links for the manuals aren't working for me, and a quick perusal of the forums didn't turn up what I'm looking for.

The tale of a Drow (no-reload)

It is a dark time for the forum, the recent inactivity has caused fear and lack of no-reload playthroughs to read. In a world where @bengoshi‌ 's hero, Yahiko, is still nowhere to be found and @Blackraven‌ hasn't been illuminating us with one of his run for weeks ...

Some forumites started to lose hope, the prophecy of the return of summer and the World Cup at the same time is fulfilled once again.

But someone will try to stand up once again against this monster of a challenge that is SCS no-reload, he already failed in the past, but he is still going to give everything he has.

It will be hard, many rough fights await, but he is going to play his favorite game with passion and in difficulty lies joy and fun.

Rules and mods:

-Solo
-No-Reload
-Insane difficulty at all times
-Completionist
-Start with 1 reputation and can't earn reputation through donating
-SCS (full prebuff for casters)
-Item Randomiser
-BG2 Tweaks
-aTweaks
-Rogue Rebalancing
-IWDification
-BG1 casting sounds
-Dark Horizons (Blind)
-T'was a slow boat from Kara Tur (Blind)

To face this difficult challenge, I present you Yami, a 108 roll Neutral-Good Drow Berserker/Wild Mage/Shadowdancer because why not ! Let's see if a character this powerful can be enough to overcome the challenge.

Living as a Drow in the realms is far from easy. Even when you are raised by a powerful and respected Mage in a small closed library. The folks here started to trust Yami and to consider him as a good fellow. He was truely kind-hearted, something that wasn't common with the others members of his race. He learned the art of magic with his foster father, Gorion had a lot of hopes for him even if sometimes his innate power was bursting, he practiced his swordmanship with the watchers and played a lot with Imoen during his youth. He was kind of a jack-of-all-trades and had a strong inner will.

He is specialized (** pips) in Dagger and Scimitar. Being a Berserker, he can't assign more than 1 pip in a ranged weapon, so he is actually throwing daggers. He started his mage career with Sleep and Find Familiar memorized and his Thief career with 30 points in Open Lock.

In Candlekeep, Yami did all his chores and picked some chests, most notably those in the Inn. He looted a very beautiful sapphire which was worth 1.000 gold. He also encountered some bounty hunters, Shank and Carbos weren't threats. After speaking with them, Yami simply threw a dagger, which was fatal. However, he also met another guy in the basement ...

[/spoiler]

Maybe he was the source of the rat infiltration in the fortress. Anyway, Gorion was right, this place was becoming too dangerous and Yami decided to join his foster father and to flee Candlekeep. He spoke with Imoen before, she wanted to travel with him but knew Gorion wouldn't permit it.

Gorion told him that they were going to travel this night if they could. The shadows would help them to escape, unobserved.

This was but a terrible mistake.

After 4 hours of walking, they were ambushed by a group of bandits. They wanted Yami at all cost, but Gorion refused. After he yelled to flee, Gorion started to cast some powerful spells and dispatched most of them. But in the end, the armored figure slayed him. Hidden in a tree, Yami saw all the scene and he was destroyed. The man who raised him, gave him education and a chance to live in this ruthless world was taken away from him. A part of him died at the same time Gorion felled to the ground. He didn't even know why they were after him and why Gorion had to pay the cost of his ignorance ...

A few Hexxat problems (obvious spoilers)

Okay I was having a blast with the (real) Hexxat, and I think I learned how her death/regeneration worked. Then in the epic shodown with the Shade Lord, she was struck down with a Finger of Death. (I think a vampiress should be immune to this spell, too.) and then after the battle, she never regenerated and came out of her coffin. Her portrait was there but all grayed out. I rested for days and nada, as a last ressort I had Jaheira use Harper's Call on her grayed out portrait, she was raised and she died immediately and formed the gas cloud. This time, after 8 hours she regenerated normally. Is this a bug, as is, when slain by an insta kill attack Hexxat needs to be raised from the dead first? I wonder what happens if she gets disintegrated, will she be gone for good like normal NPCs?

Other problem. I had Neera with me and we raided the Red Wizard Enlcave in Waukeen's Promenade. Wow, that was a brutal fight. I think SCS is to blame but the merchant wizards in the entrance forced me a reload. (I play minimal reload and have reloaded only once up to that point.) My party was confused and finished off by Gul Dukeem's Horrid Wilting. My pc (an invoker specialised in ice magic) was cornered by enemy guards and mages, but he was invisible. So I waited for the buffs of mages to expire, (one mage used Oracle but I re-invisibled) and then blasted off with a cone of cold that killed the closely knit guards and 2 of the merchant mages, shattering them into frozen chunks. (yay!) Gul Dukeem got me with an Incendiary Cloud, however. (I think he is an invoker with scs too)

So I was pissed off and reloaded. This time, Neera bit it with a chromatic orb that petrified her and she was shattered afterwards:gone forever. I did not reload, I was a bit curious how the Neera plot would play out with Neera gone forever. It makes a dramatic story too, she was all hot, angry and crazy to kill the red wizards, but she was the first to be struck down when the battle started. Anyway, trouble is she was carrying Hexxat's Cloak and all her items are now gone. I had hoped the cloak was marked as 'quest item' so was immune to disintegrate/petrification but apparently, this was not the case.

We avenged Neera, this time I was more prepared and Jaheira's Insect Plague wrecked the merchant mages. Gul Dukeem was neutral this time too (selected another dialogue option) and we finished off others. I ordered drinks three times to cause a revolt in the bar and ran like chickens, the mercenaries killed off the red wizards, though they suffered heavy casualties as well. (it was interesting to see AI vs AI action there) I scouted where Lenneth was and bombarded her with Ice Storms and Cloudkills from afar, she panicked, pleaded and retreated into inner chamber. Managed to charm/dominate a few guards and killed her off in the end, though she was very, very smart:running around the enclave, casting stoneskin/mirror image as I breached her, and taking pot shots with her wand of paralysation:that felt like fighting a real, thinking human being:I believe it is thanks to SCS?

Anyway, after the battle, I saved what wild mages I could, and now Neera gone, and Hexxat's cloak gone, she dies when she is out in the sun. This makes her mighty unplayable, and I was thinking on doing her quests. Is there no way to keep her alive in the light now? I guess I can travel only at night but that is not very convenient.

where to get dispel magic in bg1

I think I found a scroll somewhere in BG1, but I must have given it to Dynaheir thinking I could buy another from High Hedge. The problem is that Dynaheir is having an unusually long visit with Firebead since I dualed Imoen over to a mage and am now using Safana temporarily for thieving duties. Furthermore, High Hedge apparently doesn't sell Dispel Magic. I'm fairly certain it can be bought in the city, but I haven't even done the Bandit Camp yet, and I want to have it for a few things before I even get access to the city (e.g. Cloakwood and the Kahrk fight). Anyone know anywhere else I can dig up a scroll? Thanks.

getting into the bandit camp

In every other play through, charname lies to some bandit lieutenant in Peldvale/Larsville about wanting to join the gang, and that's how I get in. This time around, I was thinking of taking a more, "Screw you guys, I'm here to stop you" approach. Is this going to cause a problem with finding the camp?

All you wanted to know about the “Adventure Y”

Now with BG2:EE released and we all know about Hexxat at last it’s time to anticipate something new.

So I think the discussion about the “Adventure Y” is going to be the next hit.

There’ve been several threads on this forum about this topic but I will try to gather EVERY piece of information and update it when something new is known. I hope @TvrtkoSvrdlar and others who started topics about the Adventure Y in the past excuse me ;)

A little bit of history first.

Tweets by Trent Oster, 12 May 2012

Adventure X is going to be standalone. Keep your ears peeled for Adventure Y, which is intimately linked to the Bhallspawn storyline

Adventure X is a side adventure, while Adventure Y is an optional storyline piece in the Bhallspawn series

Tweets by Sam Hulick and Trent Oster, 23 May 2012

SH: Listening to the #BGEE Adventure Y main theme on repeat while doing paperwork. Never has something so mundane felt so heroic & adventurous.

TO: I do the same. It can become a liability when the #bgee Adventure Y theme is going hard and you are trying to do contracts.

Later PhillipDaigle tweeted that the Adventure Y can be set at or near Boareskyr Bridge, accidentally the place where Cyric killed Bhaal.

Dee in November 2012 said (http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/comment/142403/#Comment_142403) the "Adventure Y" hasn't been finished yet, and will likely be released post-ship.

Here (http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/comment/369710/#Comment_369710) is said the Adventure Y has been confirmed for after BGE2:EE (release). This post (9 October 2013) is promoted by LiamEsler.

Basically there were no news at all after that.

All of a sudden PhillipDaigle here on the 30th of November 2013(http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/comment/418768/#Comment_418768) said something that can be interpreted as:

1) it’s wrong to think that the Adventure Y is planned for after BG2:EE, or
2) it’s wrong to think that the Adventure Y in not going to be released in the next patch, or
3) it’s wrong to think that the Adventure Y is set after BG2:EE.

We know elminster (a Beta Tester) (http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/comment/346026/#Comment_346026) said the Adventure Y will cost money although in the past Tanthalas (also a Beta Tester, Private Beta Moderator) (http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/comment/14040/#Comment_14040) had thought about the Adventure Y as a part of the new content for EE and not a DLC.

So, we know the Adventure Y is tied with the Bhaalspawn plot and has its own theme.

Taking into account those words about money and realizing the Adventure Y has not been definitely released before BG2:EE it seems reasonable to agree with the 3rd variant and say the Adventure Y is set somewhere before the story of the Bhaalspawn ends.

Moreover, I think it’s safe to conclude from PhillipDaigle’s post the Adventure Y is meant to be content for BG:EE, not BG2:EE.

There’s an idea that the Adventure Y takes place after Sarevok's defeat and shreds some light on those “circumstances much darker than anyone would have thought” under which the Bhaalspawn left for Amn. So this adventure would probably take place between the two games and end with the Bhaalspawn getting captured by Irenicus.

It’s interesting to take into account that TrentOster - after looking (6 September 2013) at a feature request of an interlude chapter that narrates the happenings between Sarevok's ending and the capture of the Bhaalspawn by Irenicus - said “Sounds kind of adventurey. Could be a fun concept.” (http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/comment/350159/#Comment_350159)

One can interpret “adventurey” as “adventure y”.

So, right now it's everything from what has been confirmed.

Suffice to say he didn't last long afterwards.

Fun fact: Kivan has a Protection from Magic spell on him, which was a misclick on my part as I forgot ProMag can't be targeted in BG1EE. I didn't notice until Isra went in and DK started casting spells, then this happened.

Least Effective Parties and Most Effective Parties.

In your opinion what is The Least Effective or Most Effective Combination of NPCs for BG1 and BG2 (vanilla game, excluding EE characters and Mods). Please include PC as well, it adds to the uselessness or usefullness of the entire party

Is this song in this game?

You know you're playing too much Baldur's Gate when...

1. You complain to your family about having to live in "such a pissant town"
2. You search for objects at the base of every tree you see.
3. You walk into a complete stranger's house and start rummaging through his drawers.
4. You go into your basement to kill spiders.

30. Everytime you see a huskie you cry "vampire wolf!" and run.
31. You are trying to change your appearance, but you cant find the "customize" button any where.
32. You buy a hamster for the sole purpose of naming it Boo.
33. When it starts to snow/rain/thunder&lightning out, you complain that you can't find the gameplay menu to disable weather.
34. When something catches the corner of your eyes and you frantically try to hit the .

39. You stand up in the middle of a meeting and start yelling "Less talk and more fight".
40. You are in your car looking at a street map and you can't figure out where to go, because no other sections are highlighted.

Cult of the Eyeless, Beholder dead, still have the charged wand

So I took on the big bad beholder, and killed it. I forgot to use the wand, so i still have it. What does it do? Do I have any use left for it?

Most Difficult Non Storyline Fight

In your opinion, what is the most difficult Non Main Quest Fight in the Entire Series?

To us SCS, or not to use SCS, that is the question....

I've never actually installed this mod, indeed the only two I have found essential in all my searching and surfing are the BG NPC mod and the improved Wizard Slayer kit. What kind of difficulty increase am I looking at on Core difficulty?? Is it a across the board nerve-wracking every battle is knock down drag out fight, or just a more intelligent and strategic way to play the game?? And any other mods that are required to go with it??

Wizard slayer + Ranged Combat?

Does anyone know if the wizard slayer fighter kit applies the %casting failure when using a ranged weapon, or is it only applied on melee attacks?

Custom Portrait Help

I require a Custom Portrait for my CN Dragon Disciple.
The Original Portrait I used is Edwin's Portrait from Vanilla BG1, because that is the closest to how is probably looks, as he wears Orange-Ish and Reddish Clothing, but feel free to change that robe color, as I can easily change it myself.
Notes
1. Zaram is vibrant, and usually likes to think positive (usually) so don't give him any dull colors if you decide to change the colors he wears.
2. Despite the Fact that Zaram is trigger happy with his breath weapon ability, I'd prefer him not to be breathing fire in his portrait.
3. Zaram is fairly arrogant, so a smirk would be really nice :)
4. Zaram is pretty greedy too, but Gold in the mix. Anyway you like, surprise me.
5. Zaram's Familiar (A Cat) on his shoulder is Mandatory. Because that's just cute :P

If you can give me some instruction as to how to install this picture as well, that would be very kind of you

Couple of questions about Yoshimo in BG1 and a tavern rumour...

When you first recruit Yoshimo, you have a dialogue option that implies you've heard of him. I think it's ''THE Yoshimo? Feared by all?'' option. Now Yoshimo's journal (if you have unfinished business and took his heart to a temple of Ilmater) states that he spent some time in Beregost in the Jovial Juggler. So, I'm wondering if there are any hints that are about Yoshimo appearing in BG2 that were in BG1, just like Centeol and Jon Irenicus. Something like a rumor after donating to a temple or buying a drink at a tavern.

On the topic of taverns, I have another question, The rumours that appear after buying a drink are usually connected to some sort of quest. One rumor involves unrest among Maztican slaves in an Amnian colony. To my knowledge, there hasn't been a quest that expands on it but I could be wrong. If so, was it originally planned, but cut due to time restraints ala the wonderfully brilliant kidnapping of Boo? If not, then are there any compatible mods that expand on it? Or was it just a vague teaser of Anomen's TOB ending, since he does end up going to Maztica and defeating a crazy dark priest?

Thanks in advance.

playing as a fallen ranger...

Are there any mods that specifically allow a ranger to use his abilities even if he has fallen status without adding extra "fluff" mods? Or a way to ee keeper it?
