Banter between Nalia, Anomen and Valygar?

$
0
0
I was wondering since Nalia, Anomen and Valygar were all technically Amnian nobles, do they have any banters with each other? You would think that an heiress, a self-imposed exile and a fugitive who are all from the Amnian nobility would have a lot of things to say to each other. Anyway, if they don't have any banters, are there any good mods to rectify that?

A Dwarf's Journeys Through Loneliness (Solo Dwarven Defender Play-Through)

I wanted to play a dwarven defender solo, so I did. This character is completely meta-gamed, with no role-playing aspects. In fact, I’ll be explaining his activities using short sentences and bullet points. (Well, hyphens, but you get my point) I also won’t be using (many) pictures. I’ll take a few, but for the most part it’ll be just text. He’ll also take party members for specific things that he considers greatly important. (Ex. Imoen for the STR tome) Without further ado, here he is. (Just after leaving Candlekeep)

Treyve Goldbeard (shortened to just Treyve in game for simplicity's sake)
image

So he’s pretty well made from a meta-gaming sense. He does have two points in S&S style, but that’s because he’s a dwarven DEFENDER. I’ll put points into 2W style once we reach BG2, but he’s got plenty of points to go around, being a fighter kit.

As for any sort of bio, he’s basically lacking. He was trained by Arkanis and he’s very powerful. He doesn’t really train for any specific reason, however, he just enjoys it. He figures he’ll live in Candlekeep his whole life, eventually opening a shop or something. He’s a little more intelligent than an average man, and has slightly above average wisdom and charisma as well. The intelligence and wisdom mainly play into his combat strategy, while his charisma is due to his jovial nature and general friendliness. He’s not brilliant or charismatic, but he’s a da** good warrior and a fine dwarf. He studies with Gorion but he’s not exactly diligent. He’s learned the basics of life, and really doesn’t care to read and study any more, especially when the books don’t have any practical application to his life.

So now, onward to the game journaling.

Bounty Hunter or Swashbuckler?

I've played a lot with a stalker Charname, which may remain my favorite, however, I'm considering playing an even more rogue-ee character through the saga. I left off assassin b/c my personality is somewhat chaotic good, and an assassin just seems evil to me, or at least neutral. I'm not interested in playing a fighter/thief, as I prefer single classed characters. Which one of these 2 is more fun for you?

Anyone ever run a archer that primarily just used x bows? Was it fun? Does having 1 APR suck as much as I think it would?

Also, is the big metal rod useful as a end game weapon and would it fall under x bow?

How to build Jaheira from BG1 to BG2.

$

I'm playing the GoG (not EE) version of BG/BG2. I have Jaheira now, and I'll be keeping her in the party for the whole series. With her, I'm never sure of an optimal way to gear her up, though I always tank with her. In BG1 her weapon options are pretty limited if I want to keep her with a shield. For RP reasons, I can't give her the dagger of venom (in PnP, only evil characters can use that and I play the video game that way). I could do daggers, and get her a +1 pretty easy/early but 1d4+1 damage? Forget about it. I won't be doing ToSC material for a while (so no +2 scimitar or the staff mace from UB). There are no magical clubs. That about sums it up, right?

So, keeping in mind that:

1) I'm willing to SK her proficiencies when, and only when, I first have her (and change them in BG2 to what I had in BG1)
2) I want to tank with her, which will likely require a shield, at least for BG1 until she gets Ironskins.
3) I'm not killing/PP Drizzt.

how should I build her? Thanks.

We have a successful You know you're playing too much Baldur's Gate when... thread.

Recently, having seen a post by @terzaerian‌ , another idea of a thread came to me.

So, if BG came out today...

1. Each stronghold would have been a $25 piece of DLC

2. Steam would explode with 1 000 000 000 of people currently playing BG

3. People would name their children "Sarevok" and "Shar-Teel"

4. There would appear 1000+ mods about cars, underwear and bras on the Sword Coast

5. We would have the proper TV series about the Iron Throne

I've been wanting to play through the whole trilogy (using BGT and SCS) with a themed sorcerer for a while, but have been struggling with spell selection... It seems impossible to get a consistent repetoire of spells together without leaving nasty gaps in attack or defense, and as I've yet to play a char past level 12 I've only really got the spell desciptions to work from. So, bearing in mind he's not meant to be anywhere near optimal, how badly would this guy do (party or not)?

How is the Shadowdancer?

I remember trying it as soon as it was available, and being disappointed because nothing seemed to work as advertised. Are the problems that plagued the class early in its lifespan gone? Additionally, I'm curious at what people think of the class as a whole, so share your stories if you feel so inclined. I'm busy with my primary play-through (a Shapeshifter), but I'd like a second play-through I can play on the side, and I've always liked the idea of a Shadowdancer.

Adventures of Alandra the Barbarian, with new NPC mod Ellyrian + other mods

Greetings fellow Baldurians!

As I was debating with myself as to what character class I would choose for my next BG:EE playthrough, I happened to come across this picture of a barbarian-looking female warrior and instantly fell in love with it. Problem solved!

image
(I just hope that LadyRhian doesn't visit this thread...)

I've also decided that I've become sufficiently curious about the NPC Project mod (and the mod is reportedly largely compatible with EE) that I've decided to give it a try for the first time ever.

In addition, I'm also very much intrigued by @CaloNord‌ 's cleric/ranger mod NPC, Ellyrian (see thread here: http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/32979/ellyrian-the-cleric-ranger-npc ), and I've decided to give that a try as well. Calo has admitted that the mod is still in a somewhat developmental stage, but I suppose that the opportunity to add a cleric/ranger to my party was just too good to pass up.

Shortly after creating a character and beginning a new game, I came across @Pecca‌ 's mod that installs the BG2:EE interface into BG:EE (see here: http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/31069/bg-ee-gui-mods-grey-gui-and-gui-from-bg2-ee/p1 ), so I added that mod to my game as well.

There's also a handful of other mods that I'm considering possibly installing as well, but I haven't made a final decision on those yet.

In the end, I decided to start this thread not only to chronicle my own adventures, but also to showcase some of the hard work that our fellow forum members have put into either developing and/or improving upon mods. Hope you all enjoy!

********** ********** ********** **********

As I set about rolling my character's stats, I had my sights set on rolling something around 84-86. After only a few rolls, I actually surpassed my goal with a roll of 87.

image

You can see my character's complete stats and proficiencies below (after restarting the game using @Pecca‌ 's interface mod).

image
image

Here's a quick rundown of how and why I distributed my character's stats as they are.

Strength - I was lucky to get an 18 score with /15, which suited my intentions very nicely. With the release of EE, I've moved away from simply powergaming my characters (meaning, maxing all the relevant stats to 18) and focused more on RPing them. Consequently, I've been self-conscious of giving my characters too high strength, because I still want to appreciate 16- and 17-strength NPCs like Montaron and Ajantis. However, as I imagine my character as a tall, Amazonian warrior, I felt that she should have exceptional strength, but be closer to that of Ajantis or Kivan (17 or low 18s) rather than hulking beasts like Minsc or Dorn (high 18s to 19). 18/15 happens to be ideal for me, and with the added bonus of allowing her to use composite bows right out of the gate.

Dexterity - I imagine my character as being very fit and athletic, but perhaps just slightly less than a trained dancer like Skie. Besides, as one of my own RPing "rules," I don't push more than one stat score to the max. So I decided on 17, which is consistent with other well-rounded warriors like Kivan and Shar-Teel.

Constitution - I imagine my character as being very healthy, but at this point, I was conscious of pushing too many of her stat scores too high, and as with the strength score, I still want to appreciate other NPCs who have exceptionally high scores in this area. So I decided on 15, which is just high enough to get a bonus.

Intelligence - As my character's bio states, she had little interest in books growing up. So I imagine that she's just intelligent enough to be literate (and write in a journal), but beyond that, most of her "smarts" scores would be allocated toward wisdom.

Wisdom - Although somewhat lacking in formal education by tutors and books, I imagine my character as still having sensible judgement, but not being "enlightened" to extent of professional priests like Yeslick or Branwen. I decided upon 14 wisdom because... well, no character of mine should be less wise than Garrick! ;-)

Charisma - Despite her barbarian-like nature, I imagine that my character can still be a somewhat persuasive and convincing leader (just look at her picture, after all), so I decided upon a respectable score that would give a moderate (+2) bonus.

I chose a neutral (as opposed to chaotic) good alignment because I intend to play as a good-leaning character, but I typically associate chaotic good alignments with "renegade"-type characters that either have some kind of glaring chip on their shoulder (i.e: Kivan) or are sleazy/douchebaggy in some other way (Coran), neither of which is how I imagine my character. Besides, if Minsc is considered neutral good, how crazy must someone be if they are considered "chaotic"?!

My character's weapon proficiencies were chosen exclusively based on her picture, which shows her wielding a halberd-like weapon (although I think it's actually an exceptionally large axe that requires two hands) and with a quiver of arrows over her back. I know that wielding a 2-handed weapon isn't ideal for a barbarian (who are probably better advised to carry a shield, due to their armor restrictions), but heck, I've never played as a halberd-wielding character before, and I just couldn't resist the lure of it any longer.

These memories related to Baldur's Gate and/or real life which you think will sound very familiar to many of us..

I will start:

Quicksaving+autosaving over my brothers' 4 hour run and getting the crap beat out of me..

Realizing only after three (painful) playthroughs that the attribute points to divide on CHARNAME are not always the same in total and that you can actually reroll.

Playing through all your youth thinking that Charisma is arguably the most important attribute.

Concluding (too late) that - despite his badass sword - Xan is not a champion in melee.

Why can I not dual class in black pits?

Why are some weapons unlinked when others are loved?

$
0
0
I'm just looking for input on something I've often wondered about. Why are some weapons loved while others of equal damage are adored and constantly recommended?

It seems like common thinking is that daggers, a 1d4 weapon, aren't looked at as really viable, but the same players wouldn't blink an eye at speccing a war hammer. Flails are considered amazing but shortswords are an almost completely asset upon option. I know in both of those examples there is a +1 on the blunts, but that's pretty statistically insignificant, it would seem.

Many seemingly equal weapons like spears get the same thinking.

Not baiting or looking to cause flames, I really don't understand the thinking.

Edit: is it simply end-game potential?

"Advertise" Your Written Play-through(s)!

So as I'm sure we all know, there are a lot of really cool written play-throughs of the BG saga on these forums. Some of them are very challenge based, while others are more for the role-play. There are several prominent writers of these as well as a few who have just started and only have one or two of their play-throughs up. Sometimes one of the more well known writers will make a new play-through, (example: @Blackraven‌) but someone who reads all of their work will miss it and only find it a week or two later. (example: me) The idea behind this thread is that writers of these "play-throughs" can "advertise" their play-throughs, thus making for easy access for others, as well as a visible and concise back catalogue for new members of the forums. I'm not going to include my own writings in the main post, but I'll place them in the comments, same as you all. The "format" for these would be...

[Title of the thread/character's name/what kind of challenge it is/however else you'd want to title it] [release status i.e complete/BG1 complete/on break/on hiatus/ongoing/etc.]

[Link to first page of the thread]

[short description of the thread]

Any extra details or notes you might want to add beyond the description is up to you, though I don't know what you'd put in that section.

Now, I'm not sure whether to leave this in General Discussion or Challenges and Playthroughs. I think I'll leave it in General Discussion for at least a week, just so it can garner attention. Once that's done I'll toss it into C&P, since it definitely belongs in there.

With all that done, I'm going to tag a few people who I know have written play-throughs on the forums, since they'll hopefully be interested. @Lemernis@Heindrich@lolien@bengoshi@meagloth@MacHurto@BelgarathMTH@SionIV@Aurorus@Gotural@SharGuidesMyHand‌ and Blackraven (previously tagged)

Can you help me choose a class for my character?

$

Hey guys!

It's a pleasure to be here in this great community.

With the BG:EE's 1.3 patch coming soon, i want to understand which type of character fits better to my playstyle, to start a new adventure that will go from BG:EE to BG2:EE.

I'm unsure about practically everything, but my character must have these requirements, for roleplaying reasons:

1) Race: Human
2) A pure class, i don't want a multiclass character
3) A frontline character, a great tank with a good damage output
4) My character will be the leader of a good aligned party
5) In the case of a dual wield combat style, the weapons must be of the same type (2 flails for example, or 2 blades)

Reading all the forum for about one week helped me to find these solutions:

1) Paladin (Cavalier), two handed sword (Carsomyr)
2) Paladin (Inquisitor), two handed sword (Carsomyr)
3) Paladin (Cavalier), dual wield (Flail of Ages + Defender of Easthaven)
4) Paladin (Inquisitor), dual wield (Flail of Ages + Defender of Easthaven)
5) Paladin (Cavalier), dual wield (Purifier + something else)
6) Paladin (Inquisitor), dual wield (Purifier + something else)
7) Monk
8) Monk (Sun Soul)
9) Fighter (Berserker), dual wield (Flail of Ages + Defender of Easthaven)
10) Barbarian, dual wield (Flail of Ages + Defender of Easthaven)

I have put Fighter (Berserker) and Barbarian in the last two spots because i have found that Human isn't the best race for these two classes, and Fighter is better dual classed.

Guys, now i need your precious help...which combination is the best one for you?

Sorry for the wall of text, thanks in advance and have a great day!

Stuck on Bodhi Bug- Can't Progress in Game

Hello all,

I chose Bodhi as my assistance in reaching chapter 4, but during my first playthrough, I couldn't engage her in conversation after killing Aran. I attempted starting from all points at which I had a save file, but to the same end. After reading very few reports of the same problem and coming across no solutions, I decided I'd encountered a problem unlikely to occur again. Perhaps stupidly, I started a brand new game file and pursued the same choices (Bodhi). This time I saved well before Aran fight, but I'm at the same dead end and I cannot initiate dialogue with Bodhi regardless of the circumstances under which I kill Aran.

Are there other prerequisites to entering chapter 4 aside from the completion of the task Bodhi has assigned me? My Journal reflects the fact that I have killed Aran and should report back to Bodhi. This is my first post for any bug of any game (typically I'm capable of locating a forum on my problem and troubleshoot my own issues), but there doesn't seem to be a reported solution to this bug. Help Please!!!

Doing the unthinkable at the Mana Forge - your ideal alternative resolutions to ToB

Among other things over at my topic on Clerics and Ascension, a little tangent started on alternative courses of action one could theoretically take at the Mana Forge. Sergio mentioned the possibility of giving the essence and portfolios to Cyric while I proffered my own unique take - to actually complete the process of uplifting Amelyssan to godhood, as shown in my own little fanfic, the Unthinkable. Not wanting to derail the other thread from its topic, but still wanting to discuss it, I decided to make this one to discuss this issue more in-depth.

So, do you have an alternative resolution to BG, and if so, what is it?

First ever EVIL campaign?

Yes, I am 27 years old and in all my years of installing BG on new computers every half a decade since I was a teenager, I have never done an evil playthrough.

To be honest, I don't even have the slightest idea how being evil is going to effect the game and how I interact with NPC's in the game and decisions I make. Do I just run around taking all the evil dialogue options? Do I grind commoners and nobles for XP?

Among those questions I also am pretty excited about thoughts on who is going to come along for this journey. Do I tell Imoen to get lost outside Candlekeep? I have ALWAYS wanted to see what it was like to bring Xzar and Montaron into my party for the longhaul. Are they worth bringing along? I also have always wanted to see what it was like having Shar-teel being my frontliner with Viconia being my healer. I also have never considered using Eldoth the bard, I wonder if he is any good?

If any of you guys have done the naughty bhaalspawn run before and have any good tips for me to make this playthrough more enjoyable, I would greatly appreciate it. So far you guys have helped me to understand what a solo run is all about, the pros and cons of min/maxing and roleplaying in your playthrough. I figured it was time to stop planning and thinking about what I want to do in the game and finally get a run going.

So what do you guys think? Should I go for it, or should I be proud to say that I have never played an evil character on this game before and keep up my streak of honor and integrity? Thanks in advance for any comments and criticism. Have a great day guys.

Any way to escape Candlekeep after killing Firebeard??

$

My Halfling assassin simply wants to take this man down this go-round, and after many reloads it certainly is possible. However, Gorion takes it upon himself to instantly kill you when you approach him, which makes things a bit tricky. The only thing I can imagine would work would be a mad dash to the temple to raise your rep with the money you took of the unfortunate old mage you just killed, but if the temple priest is hostile, aren't you pretty much stuck there without a way to move forward??

Edit: Walking around town after is suicide, I would assume the only way to accomplish this is to scrounge up 200 gold, raise your rep one point, then after you kill him you fall to just disliked and not despised. I can't see any other way out of there lol.

Edit again: I forgot I choose Neutral Evil as my alignment, which puts me at nine to start which doesn't really work I suppose. Logically this makes no sense, since as far as I can tell the only type of NPC who can get away with killing Firebeard is a good aligned character.
