How do I use CluaConsole in BG2:EE?

Dummy question, I know. But I'm terrible with computers. I imported my paladin from BG1 and I really want to get the Cloak of Balduran back. Google tells me I need to add to the Baldur.ini file, but I'm having real trouble actually finding it.

Finally finished!

Just thought I'd share...it took me about 7 months, but I finally got all the way from Candlekeep to the end of Throne of Bhaal. My M/T (Larry) was a real trooper.
I've got a pretty good backlog of games I want to get to, but I also kind of want to jump right back into BGEE with a new character. What an amazing couple of games these are!

In general, is a Thief required?

For most of all the IE games. If I wanted to solo the game as say, a druid or something like that, would I be able play the game without thieving skills (detect/remove traps and lockpicking) or the knock mage spell, or would I be missing out on good loot from chests / locked areas that would be game changing? Just wondering what you guys thought about it. I really wanted to try to solo the game as a druid or something similar. I just don't know how vital a thief is to the party, especially when you don't have access to the mage spell counterparts to their abilities.

So I have debilitating rerollitus. Its so bad I can't bring myself to even get to BGEE2.

I would really appreciate if you guys could take a class you've enjoyed and try to convince me to play it. I really need to lock a character in and stick with it and I could truly use your help.

I will RP as much as possible so please include any back story/ motivations you have.

Right now I don't have a preference for fighter, caster, divine, arcane, whatever. I'm open to anything.

The only class I'm not interested in would be any form of Bard as my only complete play through was with a Blade.

Thank you in advance!!

Sorry to start a new thread about this wonderful little tool, but I am having a heck of a time determining what the newest available version is and where to get it from. Could someone point an itinerant Bard in the proper direction?

Dualling Imoen with BGT (spoilers)

I just finished the BG1 portion of BGT, having kept Imoen a thief the entire game. After getting Yoshimo in Irenicus' dungeon, I dualled her to mage, and she was level 5 by the time she was whisked away to Spellhold. My primary question is--will her XP change at all by the time I get to her? Or will she still be a level 5 mage without thief skills for another 6 levels or so?

This could determine the makeup of my party, as well as how fast I try to get to Spellhold, since she has been my primary thief. I can just keep Yoshimo, but replacing him with Imoen could cause me to be without a thief for the rest of that chapter. Or I could pick up Jan, although that might make my party a bit heavy on arcane (I'm a sorc, and I'd have Imoen too).

As I learn more from this forum, I realize how much about the game I didn't know about. There were items, strategies and spells that could have made my life a lot easier against various monsters. There were dialogue options I had never been given. Easter Eggs I never knew about. Etc, etc.

I was interested in seeing this kind of topic ever since my boy @Quartz‌ said that he never made Crom Faeyr. So I made this thread for us all to confess our Baldur's Gate sins. Come and admit that you never completed your stronghold, you've never even heard of Kangaxx, never killed Firkraag or are still dying to know where Hull misplaced his longsword.

I'll begin:

Confession: I have never done the Viconia romance.

Confession: I have never played a thief character.

Custom PC & NPC Portraits

Building on the original thread, started by @Syntia13, this is intended to be a hub to share alternate, fan-made portraits for the enhanced editions of the series. In order to keep the thread running and make it a comprehensive source for portraits, please abide by the site rules and a few guidelines:

Thread Rules

1: Respect artists' creations and their right to them. If portrait-makers ask that you not edit their work, don't. If a mistake is made, simply edit your post to remove the image, apologize, forgive and forget.
2: Do not share images for which you have not received permission from the artists, when possible.* This is particularly true of art from DeviantArt, which hosts many artists who do not want their work shared elsewhere.
3: If you request that a portrait be made, recognize that the artists in this forum do this simply because they enjoy contributing to the community. Be patient, be respectful and say thank you.
4: Be supportive! Many of the artists here are just beginning to learn how to make portraits. Be positive and constructive in your comments, and avoid pointless negativity.
5: If you are making and posting portraits, state who you used as a model (if applicable), either here or on your website. Understand that this still does not make the likeness your property, and be prepared to remove the image if so requested by the copyright holder.

*Understandably, the source of some older portraits is unknown. If in doubt, go to Google Images and drag the portrait to the search bar. You may find the artist or source through that method. Again refer to Rule 1.

Guide to Using Custom Portraits

Portraits in the enhanced editions use three images in bitmap (.bmp) format, the largest of which is only shown during the epilogue in Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal. The three sizes are 210x330, 169x266 (displayed in the character sheet) and 54x84 (displayed on the right UI bar).*

To use custom portraits for your PC:
1: Navigate to your Baldur's Gate directory in (My) Documents.
2: Drop the custom portraits into the Portraits folder.
3: In the game, select Custom when choosing a portrait and select the medium and small sizes. Alternately, if you have already begun your game, select Customize/Appearance from the character sheet.

To use custom portraits for NPCs:
1: Rename the portrait files to match the NPC whose portraits you want to replace. For example, Jaheira's portraits are named JaheiraL, JaheiraM and JaheiraS. There are some portraits in BG1 that do not conform to this, and those in BG2 have their own naming format. Consult this site.
2: Place the portraits in your override folder, located in the directory where you installed the game.

*Note that after the latest patch, the games allow a single large portrait size to be automatically adjusted to the proper sizes. I currently do not recommend this, as it causes pixelation in the small 54x84 version.

Two Weapon Style vs. Two Handed Weapon Style (Power Gaming vs Roleplaying)

$

Hey guys, I would assume somewhere in the past this thread has been done before, but I have a few things bugging me about the debate. One thing I have always hated to do in life, is ride the fence on any subject. Sometimes it pays to be in the middle and sometimes not so much.

When I approach any RPG, whether it be a single player or MMO, I always seem to fall directly in the middle of Min/Max power gamer and Roleplayer. For example in the MMO Everquest, all the Min/Maxers say that if you want to play a Warrior, it has to be an Ogre. Any other race is just not good enough. In their argument Humans and Dark Elves are the worst Warrior tanks in the game. I bet you can guess what race warrior I would be compelled to play? At the same time, it would bug me that my choice was considered much weaker and sub-par.

That brings me to the thread topic. I don't know how each melee class goes about deciding which is the better option between Dual Wielding and Two Handers, but lately I have been brainstorming up a Barbarian. For some reason, when I think of a Barbarian, I think of a big bad ass dude in light armor with a giant 2 handed axe or sword. When I read the description of the Barbarian, everything about the class sounded perfect until I saw the part about them getting a bonus pip in Two Weapon Style. Is it that sole fact that Barbarians get a 3rd pip in dual wielding that makes it the best option, or is dual wielding just superior to two handed weapons?

If this is the case, then why do certain classes benefit more from a two handed weapon and others benefit more from dual wielding?

Pretty much the root of this thread is that I want to play a Barbarian that wields a two handed axe that slices and dices his opponents up like a butcher. That is the RP side of my argument. Then on the other side, it is also extremely bugging me that the Min/Maxers are saying that Barbarians pretty much have to Dual Wield.

TL;DR

Can I create a powerful Barbarian that uses a two handed weapon, or am I going to suffer so much of a damage nerf from not going dual wield that it is just not worth going that rout?

Thank you to everyone for your time and input on my nerdy gamer questions. So far everyone has been very kind and intelligent in their comments and responses. I am sorry if my posts can sometimes seem a bit long and winded, but I really enjoy coming to this forum and getting your opinions because where I am from, there are not many people locally that share in the interests that we do.

Dualling Imoen at Level 3

I am thinking of an all female playthrough with Fighter/Thief Charname then recruiting Jaheira, Branwen and Garrick [RPing that he is afraid of retribution from Silke's relatives and uses the Ogre's belt to hide his identity].

My question is what Thief skills should I choose for Imoen before she duals to Mage at Level 3. I am currently thinking of putting everything into Stealth and simply being unable to open difficult locks if Knock doesn't turn up.

The path finding in these games is so bad...

I know it's not really that big a deal. But the path finding is so bad. So many times if I have to walk down like a narrow hallway at least one of my party will just randomly start walking in the opposite direction entirely. Also no matter what formation I put my party in it always seems my warriors get hung up on something and a lone mage or something will end up rushing into a group of enemy's ahead of them and get owned. Just had to vent.

super choppy framerate

I finally got my game started, and I'm noticing that the framerate is super choppy. I mean, I know the game is old and a little rough, but it's flat out skipping, which it never did before when I ran it on an older system.

If it matters, I'm running a laptop with an i7 processor and no dedicated video card. But this machine should be able to handle that. Is there something I need to tweak to smooth things out a bit? Thanks.

Most fitting character build for good playthrough

$

I'm thinking of replaying BG EE and BG2 EE, and I'm wondering what would be the best character build for a good playthrough. I mean storywise of course, not in terms of most effective or easiest to play, for example for an evil character you could play an assassin trying to live up to Bhaal's legacy since Bhaal himself was an assassin when he was a mortal. Anyway, thoughts would be appreciated.

Assassin or shadowdancer?

$
0
0
Hey guys. I just got bgee. I've tried bg a long time ago but never got to beat it. I did so with bg2 and had a blast with the assassin, I just loved stabbing people to chunks.

Now, I wanted to know how good does the shadow dancer come in terms of gameplay? In bg2, I could only later do multiple stabs per target by abusing the boots of speed or rings/potions. Is this class trade off worth the lower stab multiplier? Does the shadowdancer stealth mechanically work differently than chugging an invis potion? What about his progression into bg2ee? Do we get the option to go on with the same class as it wasn't available in the original?

Ultimately, I want to know from those that loved the assassin and tried the shadowdancer their impressions!

"We're All Doomed" - a thread covering Blackraven's Charnames' attempts at No-Reload Trilogy runs :D

$

0
Hey folks, I've decided to just use a single thread, this one, to report on the progress I make with different Charnames in my SCS No-Reload playthroughs. So far they just keep on falling, in early SoA at the latest, which is why I think it sensible to use a single thread instead of starting one or two new ones every week.

Most of the time I play a heavily modded version of the game, still BGT rather than EE as there are a couple of non-EE mods that I'm quite attached to (such as Item Randomization, Hard Times, Song & Silence, aTweaks).

Some of my playthroughs are heavily role-played whereas others can be seen more as technical/tactical... experiments, and may be more metagamed, though I do generally stick to Charname's alignment and personality. Other rules I tend to apply is to not abuse resting (which makes playing a spellcaster a bit more challenging), to give all creatures in the game including Charname and party members full hitpoints at level up as I don't like the 'luck factor' there, and to play no-reload. I still have a few savegames of fallen Charnames and I often tell myself I'll pick those games up again, but somehow I always end up rolling a new Charname. I might be convinced though by readers to go minimal-reload if they think a character was particularly interesting to read about.

OBITUARIES
Other Charnames you might have read aren't included here because they never died. My playthroughs with Aya the Avenger and Grynne the 2nd (Half-Orc Wizard Slayer) are lost due to game crashes and simplified re-installs, with less mods. I kind of gave up on Serene (Half-Elf Beast Mistress) after a bug at near death status, but strictly speaking she never died.
† Nelsy †
CG Halfling Bounty Huntress
Date of Death: Unknown
Cause of Death: Insta-killed by Jenkal’s backstab.
Nelsy was a friendly, kind-hearted and naive young Bhaalspawn. She died a premature death in Gullykin where she had wanted to meet more of her (Halfling) kind and make some friends. The villagers all received her amiably and one, Alora, had even joined her, much to Nelsy's joy, until Jenkal ended her bliss. Maybe she was a bit too soft to be a successful Bhaalspawn or even adventurer.

† Elloysia †
CN Gnome Transmuter
Date of Death: Unknown
Cause of Death: Shoal’s kiss of death proved that not only males have to be wary of Nereids.
Elloysia was an aspiring young mage, and a very unlucky one at that as she could only cast Alteration spells. Would a wider range of spells have saved her though? Probably not.

† Teyl the 1st †
NE Halfling Priest of Cyric/Thief (solo)
Date of Death: Unknown
Cause of Death: Charmed by Hareishan in the Cloakwood Mines.
Truth be told Teyl was a bit of a jerk: a double-crossing, conniving little trickster who was only out for himself and expected no less of others. Many would underestimate the sneak due to his unimpressive physique, his dapper appearance and the absence of friends surrounding let alone protecting him, but that’s exactly how he liked to work.

† Teyl the 2nd †
NE Halfling Priest of Cyric/Thief (solo)
Date of Death: Unknown
Cause of Death: PW Stunned by Rayic Gethras and subsequently slain by the wizard’s MMMs.

† Grynne the 1st †
LN Half-Orc Wizard Slayer
Date of Death: Unknown
Cause of Death: Fainted in Mulahey’s Stinking Cloud and finished off by the latter's ‘improved’ Battle Horrors
With her honesty and her sense of honor Grynne could have been a Paladin if only she had been human, and probably a bit less suspicious of magic. She distinguished herself as a merciless hunter of evil arcane magic users, and had difficulty staying her hand even against non-evil casters.

† Gylliane the 1st †
TN Elf Swashbuckler/Mage
Date of Death: Unknown
Cause of Death: Webbed by Kysus at the Cloakwood Mine entrance and finished off by the latter and two of his Ogrillon minions
Gylliane was a typical ‘what you see is what you get type of girl’, turning heads wherever she went with her elven beauty and very no-nonsense in her dealings with others: courteous when she could, ruthless when she had to.

† Gylliane the 2nd †
CG Elf Swashbuckler/Mage (solo)
Date of Death: Unknown
Cause of Death: Unknown. During the final showdown she had already taken down Angelo and was gaining the upper hand against Tazok when all of a sudden she instantly died. One theory is that Semaj successfully petrified her, but it’s something we’ll never know.

† Lenno †
CN Halfling Swashbuckler
Date of Death: Unknown
Cause of Death: Combination of (modded) Traps and Flesh Golems at Alaric’s Cave
Flamboyant, risk-prone and with an unmatched talent to choose the wrong friends and generally fail at missions, Lenno was unlikely to live a long and healthy life. Even so, his unfortunate death in a pirate cave came disappointingly early.

† Ocker †
NG Dwarven Skald
Date of Death: Unknown
Cause of Death: Charmed and death-kissed by Shoal.
Ocker was a good Dwarf, noble of heart. A brave warrior poet who took his role as the leader of an adventuring party very seriously, Ocker would inspire his companions with his battlesong but suffered when he saw his friends in trouble, causing him to step into battle ill-prepared on more than one occasion. His valor in the end also meant his death.

† Vallon †
LG Human Undead Hunter
Date of Death: Unknown
Cause of Death: Panicked, cornered and slain by TorGal at Nalia’s Keep.
Vallon combined his outstanding fighting prowess with an impeccable moral integrity, and a humble disposition he often found lacking in fellow Paladins. He singlehandedly saved the Sword Coast from the brute Sarevok and was already making a name for himself in Amn before mind-altering magic ended his life.

cleric/mage, when to dual? or maybe a sorc?

$

I'm feeling nostalgic and taking another run through the series. My plan is to create a cleric, then dual over to a mage at some point, using shadowkeeper kit it to a wild mage. My original plan was just a wild mage, but then I thought, why not take some cleric level for a few extra low level buff spells? I'll still max out as a mage, and will have better HP on top of it.

Anyway, I'm not sure when to dual. At first I figured at level 8, as that would still let me get to level 34 as a mage. However, that would have me playing a lowly mage near the end of BG1 and for the rest of the game. However, the mage pretty much maxes out his castings/saves/etc. at level 28, so I could probably milk the cleric levels a little longer. HLAs are based on total experience, not level, so I don't even have to worry about that being an issue.

Then again, I've never played a sorcerer. So, maybe I should install that thing that lets me play bg1 in the bg2 engine and play one of those.

So, I suppose my question is when is a good time to dual the cleric? Or, if you prefer, can you try to sell me on the sorcerer (aside from telling me how uber it is, because I already know that)? Thanks.

I think I did something backwards. When I returned to Baldur's gate after doing the tales of the sword coast. I am arrested, got out of that but I can't get back into Flaming fist to save the Duke. Every time I try 1/2 my party gets killed. I do not know how far to go back or if I should just stat over. I really do not want to do Durlags tower again. I also killed the assassins in the under cellar because they attacked me. What do I do now. Just let the Duke die?
