RP decision: what would you do (here as Coran)? (spoilers)

In my "Let the Fates Decide" game I now have Coran burgling Ramazith's tower. I'm in a spot where I'm just curious how others might handle it.

First a quick bit of setup: With this gaming method I use card flips (red suit = yes, black suit = no) or die rolls (via WotC die roller) to make some decisions, either for fun value or because I'm genuinely uncertain what the character would do. However, what I imagine a character would likely do always takes precedence over using chance in response to a situation. But again, as mentioned, the card flips and die rolls do also add fun value for a lot of things in the game by adding a random element. (Hope that all makes sense.)

Coran is wearing the Boots of Speed. And included in his inventory are two invisibility potions, one potion of magic blocking, one oil of speed, one healing potion, and one poison antidote potion.

So... Coran picks the lock. He everso slightly cracks the door (didn't think of it, but I guess I could have flipped a card for whether the door creaks! Oh well.) I guess we may presume Coran can pick the lock and peer in undetected because he is a fourth level Thief in stealth mode. So he peers in. And he spots Ramazith, who is right there on the first floor of the tower. From a RP standpoint I like to get a little creative with something like this; yes, Ramazith is there on the first floor, but let's say he doesn't literally have to be facing the door. The question I formulate then is: Does Coran have access to get to spiral stairs undetected, i.e., for example, is Ramazith facing away from the front door engrossed in a book such that Coran may slip past him up the stairs unseen? The card I flip is a red suit, so yes. Coran may advance. Which RP-wise I figure Coran (ever the risk-taker) would do.

Up the stairs he goes. On the next level are mustard jellies. Not a problem.

Still in stealth mode of course, Coran carefully creeps up the stairs on the second floor and peers up to the third floor level. There he spies no less than five ghasts shambling about. Myself, I don't think it is believable that he could stealth past five of them undetected even with boots of speed.

So the question I pose to you all now is...

Within this gaming method would you

a) RP that Coran gulps down a potion of invisibility and advances?

b) RP that Coran turns back? (Five ghasts on only the third floor of a tall tower is not a good sign of what may lie ahead.)

c) flip a card as to whether he advances upward with the potion of invisibility?

As I learn more from this forum, I realize how much about the game I didn't know about. There were items, strategies and spells that could have made my life a lot easier against various monsters. There were dialogue options I had never been given. Easter Eggs I never knew about. Etc, etc.

I was interested in seeing this kind of topic ever since my boy @Quartz‌ said that he never made Crom Faeyr. So I made this thread for us all to confess our Baldur's Gate sins. Come and admit that you never completed your stronghold, you've never even heard of Kangaxx, never killed Firkraag or are still dying to know where Hull misplaced his longsword.

I'll begin:

Confession: I have never done the Viconia romance.

Confession: I have never played a thief character.

Difficulty and Challenge

Hello everyone,

I wanted to get some feedback on this. I see a lot of people say that they only play on core rules because it is the same as its pnp dnd counterpart. This always bothered me because a video game cannot mirror pnp simply because your opponents are AI versus a human DM. With a DM, the core rules make sense. The challenge would likely be greater as you have to pit your character's actions against the mind of the DM.

So my questions is this, is core rules enough of a challenge for those that are very comfortable with Baldur's Gate game mechanics? If not, in what ways do you increase your challenge of the game? (or do you bother?)

For me, I like to use as few mods as possible, so I do not use scs. I instead increase the difficulty to hard and sometimes insane. While it does not "fix" the AI like scs does, it makes it so that if you screw up something, you WILL pay the price. That is exactly how I like to play most games in general.

I was always surprised that it seemed like most people seem to have quite the aversion to upping the difficulty from core in this game.

Thoughts?

Edit: Nightmare - Insane.

Config Utility for Enhanced Edition

Is there any way to bring up the Configuration Utility that the original games had for the Enhanced Editions? Specifically, I was looking to change the setting which allowed you to increase the pathfinding nodes, which usually resulted in better pathfinding. The pfing for EE seems to be even worse than I remember it, maybe it's just nostalgia but I would like to be able to improve it. Any opinions?

Bards/Blades Pick Pockets and Lore

So I'm considering the possibility of running a bard once again. I won the original BG2 with a blade like 10+ years ago, and had no where near the grasp of the game as I do now. Does anyone know what the max pick pockets/lore score is for a bard? For a blade? I'm considering running a vanilla bard this time to take advantage of these being higher. Thoughts?

Shag, Marry, Kill: The Baldur's Gate Version

Okay, classic game. You choose among the romance interests in the Baldur's Gate Trilogy one to spend a single, memorable, steamy night with, one to spend the rest of your life with till death do you part, and one to chunk in any way you see fit. Try to choose options compatible with your gender/preference/orientation/whatever. Feel free to explain your choices :)

I'll begin:
Shag: Jaheira (I feel like she'd have some crazy primal nature side. Hopefully not too freaky... being called "omnipresent authority figure" may be a bit much)
Marry: Aerie (I don't like blondes, but she's a sweetheart and my kids may get wings... sweet!)
Kill: Viconia (Almost shagged her... but then she may kill me first, so there you go. Close call just couldn't bring myself to kill Neera)

Neera ain't wifey material, too non-committed and wild surges may not be safe during conception...

Random Loot

I'm not sure if this has been posted before but...

I'm doing a playthrough of Icewind Dale (though, I'm sure this is still relevant to the Baldur's Gate saga) and I want to get a specific item. I've looked on Game Banshee and it tells me it's random loot between a dagger, a ring and the boots I want.

I did a playthrough and I got the dagger (without realising it was a random loot in that area). So I restarted and the loot is now a ring. Is there any way that I can get the boots I want without constantly restarting/cheating? I've tried loading up save games and resting but the ring is still there D:

What life lessons do you think can be learned from the Baldur's Gate games/saga? Not just from the perspective of the CHARNAME and storyline but from some of the other joinable characters.

Obviously not including the Nietzsche quote and jokey ones like "Never trust a butch guy in scary armour and burning eyes".

((This is an SCS, no-reload, trilogy run, technically, speaking. I have yet to complete one of these after a decade of trying.))

I figure, I should try and record my glorious escapes and close shaves with death, rather than my pitiful deluded triumphs (why, yes, I do have Xan in my party why do you ask).

After almost dying in the Firewine dungeon...

http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/31224/firewine-is-hard-chills

...my ragtag team cleared Gullykin of the treat of the Ogre mage after three descents and retreats. Then cleaned the country side a bit and headed to Ulcaster, which will be my next post.

** In the mean time here is my house rules:

No-cheese & no obstructive metagaming. I personally roll characters without re-arranging stats (i.e. no
min-max), but usually reroll for a bit. Minor aesthetic changes via EEkeper is okay (I like my fighter/mage multi to be human, for example), but no hacks like imported immunities or items.) I don't buy back ("recharge") wands or other such shenanigans. No maximum hitpoints: too bad if my big burly fighter rolled a 1 at level up.

I use SCS with all AI improvements & some modest challenges, but without major rule changes (e.g. mages don't autocast a dozen spells on round 1; in turn, I don't prebuff by metagaming encounters, except for scouting).

Currently running, a LG Human multiclass Fighter/Diviner (EEkeepered for flavor; no more special than a gnome F/I). In this run Imoen is kept a sorcerer from day 1. The rest of my team is Branwen, Jaheira, Xan, Safana.

My no-reload run almost came to an end there after a certain mage proceeded to Minor Globe -> Web -> Lighting Bolt -> Stinking Cloud -> Fireball his way to almost obliterate my party in those narrow corridors.

I ran.
Safana and Jaheira dead.
After several minutes of Benny Hill Show *cue chase music*, and his second Minor Globe wearing out, I managed to stick a last ditch Blindness at him. He promptly disappeared. (Invisibility, maybe?)

I grabbed the gear of my fallen and ran my ass out of the dungeon. (He even used a Fireball scroll on me, I think; damn! I could have used that scroll!)

Build a power party...

Ok, so I was pondering what the most powerful party (Charname + 5 NPCs) would be… but, as has been well argued elsewhere on here, with enough meta-knowledge ANY combo can be game beating.

So the scenario is this:
You have to put together a party to clear a totally unseen BG2 dungeon… you have zero meta-knowledge, other than that you'll be locked in (as with the Planar Prison), you could be in there for a while (Watcher's Keep-esque), and you have to play it in minimal/no reload style ("There are no continues, my friend.")

My attempt:

Charname - Ranger/Cleric - full suite of divine spells, strong self-buffing capabilities (narrowly beating Kensage)
Korgan - Main tank… shorty saves & 'zerker immunities
Keldorn - Mage buster extraordinaire
Edwin - Massive spells/day makes him a naturally versatile primary caster
Jan - Thieving skills will be essential in a blind scenario, and he's also a solid support caster
Rasaad - Magic resistance is cool, but this pick is mostly because monks rock!

If the Realms had Twitter...

So seeing a hashtag in the post #ConfessionsOfABhaalspawn got me thinking, what if CHARNAME and the various NPCs had access to social media and obsessively tweeted every major and minor highlight of the saga? I mean, apart from the numerous storyline breaking moments that would arise from the characters telling everyone where they are and what they're doing, of course. Let's ignore that. I'll start out, someone jump in with another "tweet" to advance the story and we'll keep going from there... or everybody disregard my stupid idea and leave me feeling hurt and rejected. Whatevs.
@Charname WTF?? Foster dad is all "get ur stuff we gtg on a trip nownownow", hittin up @Winthrop 4 sum gear 1st though #ElvenArse

Oh, sure, that's an invasion...

Wendric tells you that there is zombie invasion going on in his farm, but there are only 20 freaking zombies actually, and it looks like most of the times, that you have to search in the map for the zombies because they are pacifically "zombyifying" themselves (aka they are doing literally nothing).image
So I thought of 'enhancing' this a little more with the console, hence this happened:
image
a real zombie invasion started, I spawned around 760 zombies, and killed them all, that was worth around 50k XP, which is pretty much for a single class Priest of Lathander.
image
They easily fell to Turn Undead, I changed my tactic because hitting them with the Stupifier was taking too long and I got hit several times that way.
image
And finally, some could say that it was a slaughtering, or a massacre, but... They were already dead! And as a Priest of Lathander, my duty is to destroy evil undead, right?

Does it make any difference whether it has been Identified? It just seems wrong to sell Mage Robes, etc. for 1 GP and then later

solo cleric of Ilmater? (spoilers)

In a thread on life lessons from Baldur's Gate, MonaCanalla posted
-Capitalism wins. The more you adventure out there, the more coins you posses. Also, the game is full of beggars and other people with the same miniature that obviusly aren`t strong enough to get their own coin in the Realms.
This made me think of the challenge of the opposing vision: soloing as a cleric of Ilmater who eschews personal accumulation of wealth. He or she would never even touch a coin, or any sort of treasure. The character wouldn't gather any loot drops, and would use only a wooden staff and mundane sling/bullets. In order to survive such a character would have to rely on spells anyway.

I'm wondering how feasible this character would actually be early on... I guess he or she could side-quest a lot and level prior to taking on the Nashkel mines. But even then I'm thinking this is going to be next to impossible just to get to chapter 3. Making it to chapter 4 would also be very tough.

Can one just grab Mulahey's Holy symbol and the letters in the chest in his lair without fighting him? Sanctuary would work for that.

Anyway, thoughts?

monk as tank? - 1. ioun stones vs criticals; 2. dual wielding

Basically, can the Ioun stones block critical hits in BG2EE? (Otherwise a monk has x2 damage vulnerability even with the best AC.)

Also, can it gain +++ in dual wielding?

If yes to both, a monk dual wielding katanas in the frontline with magic resistance boosting items seems to be a formidable opponent and a much better wizard slayer than the wizard slayer, no?

How much cheese can you tolerate?

Cheeeeeeeeese.

Anyways title and poll.

Examples of the different degrees of cheese.

1. I use cheese whenever possible - Abuse the engine whenever possible. Fake talk, metagaming, offscreen nuking, etc. If you can do it and it makes your life easier, do it.

2. I only use cheese when I can RP justify it - Only using cheese when it makes sense, regardless of how 'cheesy' it is. Examples: using the Shield of Balduran, Web stacking, trap stacking.

3. I only use cheese under desperation and otherwise avoid it - Basically, you fight a boss about 20 times, can't do it, get frustrated, then resort to cheese just so you can progress before you break your keyboard. Otherwise you play fair.

4. I never use cheese under any circumstances - Self-explanatory.

I'm a 2 personally.

My take on Rasaad's epilogue (non-canon) (Spoilers)

$

I wasn't particularly satisfied with Rasaad's fate in two out of three of his endings, as I felt that a man like him deserved at least a little more. I'm not one to believe that every character should have a happy ending, but his non-romanced path felt... unfinished, for lack of a better term. So I went and wrote my own version:

Rasaad Epilogue - Non-romanced
Though Alorgoth was not seen again for many years after the events in the Deepstone Mines, the Bringer of Doom was not killed there. By the time Alorgoth resurfaced, Rasaad's name had been almost forgotten by the world. After the events of the Bhaalspawn saga, Rasaad, hoping to reconcile with the brothers and sisters of his order, returned to Calimshan, hoping that the tales of his heroism would redeem him. However, he was unable to convince them to the truth of his 'betrayal' of their teachings, and gentle words soon became fierce combat. Rasaad battled against hundreds of his fellow Sun Soul monks, sustaining grievous injuries and forced to flee the temple. His wounds should have spelled his end that day, but whether by the grace of the Moonmaiden or his own force of will, Rasaad held onto what strands of life he had. Assumed dead by the order, Rasaad wandered the deserts as a nameless traveller for many years.

Inevitably, the return of Alorgoth would happen, and as though by premonition, Rasaad would be ready. On a moonless night, the Sharran order of the Dark Moon launched a devastating attack upon the main temple of the Sun Soul, overwhelming the monks with ease. The grandmistress of the order, Haraan Sixscar, faced Alorgoth personally before being stabbed in the back by the monk Gahan, an agent of the Dark Moon order who had decided Rasaad's guilt. When all seemed lost that night, Rasaad returned, fending off both the Dark Moon monks and his own brothers before meeting his nemesis face to face. The two monks, the strongest of their respective orders, struck simultaneously without a word. By the words of those who watched, the battle between light and dark would be one worthy of song for many years.

Despite his skill, Rasaad knew he could not slay Alorgoth, as the two were equal in combat and the Sharran was devious. In an act of desperation, Alorgoth attempted a last maneuver, summoning a portal for his escape into the Plane of Shadow once more. Rasaad, in one final effort to defeat his enemy, charged towards Alorgoth sending both monks plummeting once more into the Shadow Plane... forever this time.

The Sun Soul order had achieved victory that day, but neither Rasaad nor Alorgoth were ever seen again. However, though Rasaad was gone, his legacy would remain. Redeemed in the eyes of his brothers and sisters, a statue of Rasaad was raised in the rebuilt temple, the first monument of its kind ever to be made. It is said that in the brightest of days, the statue would glow as though with the light of the sun itself, and the monks of the temple would pray for Rasaad's final victory over Alorgoth and his return.
A bit too much like Keldorn's, I know, but that's why I left Rasaad's fate ambiguous for the possible hope that he will return victorious one day. Whether he does or not? Who can say :P

Now, his romanced ending was a different story. I actually like the direction it took, and I'm a sucker for tragic romances for sure, but having CHARNAME die was just awkward to read. A bit more grim than the above, but I like this one a little better.
Though Alorgoth was not seen for many years after the events int he Deepstone mines, the Bringer of Doom was not killed there. But by the time Alorgoth resurfaced, Rasaad's focus had moved from avenging his dead family members to caring for his new ones. Unable to convince the Sun Soul order of his dedication to them, he and CHARNAME went and made a home together in the Cloud Peak mountains. Their six children enjoyed an idyllic childhood, brought up according to the tenets of the Sun Soul philosophy. But the children were of the Bashir bloodline, and it was only a matter of time before the darkness that plagued their father found them as well.

One pleasant spring evening, Rasaad and CHARNAME were set upon by Sharran assassins. CHARNAME, at the time several months pregnant with her seventh child, was an easy target for them. Rasaad, knowing that his lover was in mortal danger, stood between his family and countless Dark Moon monks and assassins, a single man against insurmountable odds. Whether blessed by Selune or fueled by righteous fury that day, Rasaad fought with more strength than anyone had ever seen, narrowly evading blows that surely would have been fatal and defeating each and every foe who attempted to slay him.

Tirelessly, Rasaad fought off the attackers for what seemed to be countless hours, until finally, as the last of the Sharrans had either died or fled in terror, the injuries the monk sustained, coupled with exhaustion which would have destroyed a lesser man, dropped him to the ground. With the last of his strength, Rasaad lifted himself to face CHARNAME and whispered his last words into his wife's ear before passing away under a sky with a full moon and endless stars.

Soon afterwards, CHARNAME conceived her seventh child, a strong boy who resembled his father more than any of his siblings. In memory of her husband's past, CHARNAME named him Gamaz, Rasaad's brother who had lost his way and died by his hand many years ago. Gamaz would grow up to be the strongest of any of Rasaad's children, and as Rasaad did for his brother, swore an oath of revenge towards Alorgoth for the cruel fate that befell his father. Posessing the skills of both his Sun Soul father and his Bhaalspawn mother, Gamaz led his brothers and sisters on a crusade of vengeance and justice against the Dark Moon sect, an epic struggle which the Alorgoth would suffer his greatest defeats from.
I think this one is rather close to Viconia's romanced ending, but I hope it feels unique enough. I certainly would have preferred it end like this compared to vanilla.

Please do give your opinions. This was just my attempt at some writing for fun, seeing as I don't get much inspiration from other sources these days, so I write for video games instead. XD
