SoA vanilla no-reload with Fighter/illusionist. Need advice

Hello BG gurus,

I jst recently finished a no reload run of BG1 and David the gnome will be starting his SoA no reload run soon.

BG was quite easy with web spamming and ring of free action (which I am not sure where to get in SoA). What advice in thing to do, things to avoid, tricky fights, quest order you guys have for a SoA no reload run? I plan doing the aerie romance (have never done it after all these years) and take Jan Jansen for stealing/spike trapping in ToB if I reach that far.

Are 3 characters too many people to level up quickly? Is it gonna take me ages to reach 6M PX for level 9 spells?

Solo no-reload pitfalls

I'm sure many people have tackled this challenge before. I have made many attempts and still have yet to succeed. What are so fatal encounters you have experienced in a solo no-reload game? What are the times when you get lucky and miss near-deaths?

In the current game, I always try to play it "safe". My solo FMT always equip the Shield of Harmony (protect against Charm, Hold, Confusion) and occasionally Arbane+2 Shortsword (provides Free Action minus Slow in vanilla BG2) and Dragonslayer (protect against Fear).

My PC just returned from Underdark and there a few many near-death cases. In the encounter with the human party while my PC was a drow, he got blinded by the Imp. The mage then sneaked up toward my PC and cast Maze! Luckily, his 15% MR activated and save his butt! When my PC returned to Athakla, one of the Githyankis from the ambush cast Maze on my PC! Grasp! Unpause and my PC has saved against the spell. I was surprised that the Githyanki Maze allowed a saving throw.

The 75 roll No-Reload/No Resurrection Challenge

Not sure how much interest there will be in this but I'm throwing it out there nonetheless!!!

RULES
- You must use a non-edited roll of 75
- You can re-roll as many times as you like
- You may not min/max any stats or edit any abilities at all
- You may not resurrect any party members
- Core rules
- Update your progress in this thread, whether it be death or success!
- Try to roleplay your character as much as possible :)
- Have fun

I'll start with Gwen, an Elven Priestess of Talos although I don't know how long she will live with her crippling low dexterity lol. She can barely equip herself and nearly takes her half an hour to do so. I took her first roll of 75, updates to come in the near future

First time ever playing BG EE

I will be playing a Sorcerer. I want to beat BGEE, and import my guy into BG2EE. I don't know anything about D&D, but I love RPGs. I have beat ton of RPGs my favorite of all time being Dragon Age Origins. Chrono Trigger, and Final Fantasy 4 are close though.

Since I don't know anything about D&D what should my Sorcerer build be in BG1EE.I' am gonna be an Elf I rolled an 89-str 13, Dex 19, Con 16, Int 15, Wis 10, Char 16 is that OK, or how to spend 89 points.

OCDers guide to SCS no-reload

$

SCS no-reload for BG/BG2 is the single most thrilling gaming experience of my entire gaming tenure. Below are some rules of thumb I learned through hard lessons. I hope others can chime in as well.

* House Rules for gameplay [recommended]:
The following assumes no-cheese & no obstructive metagaming. I personally roll characters without re-arranging stats (i.e. no min-max), but usually reroll for a bit. Minor aesthetic changes via EEkeper is okay (I like my fighter/mage multi to be human, for example), but no hacks like imported immunities or items.) I don't buy back ("recharge") wands or other such shenanigans. I don't use Project Image (it should have been consuming your memorized spells). No maximum hitpoints: too bad if my big burly fighter rolled a 1 at level up.

I use SCS with all AI improvements & some modest challenges, but without major rule changes (e.g. mages don't autocast a dozen spells on round 1; in turn, I don't prebuff by metagaming encounters, except for scouting).

The fundamental rule is: if you die, you are dead. Back to the drawing board...

* Here are my guidelines:

1. Everything can kill you -- if you are careless.
I died to most anything from Shank to Lavok. It's usually because I was thinking "ah, I'm probably safe for a round or two here".
Can you die to two consecutive critical strikes from Gibberlings if you stand your ground now? You will, eventually. Retreat and heal now!

2. corollary: [dons the voice of Sun Tzu] Win the fight before you have fought it.
This means to ask yourself every round of every fight: am I guaranteed to survive this fight? what if I use consumables? if I'm required to use consumables for a guaranteed win is it worth the cost?
If you answer no, then retreat. If retreat is impossible, don't hold back consumables.

3. corollary: scout!
A surprise fight prevents you from asking question 2 controllably and may force you to use your precious consumables.
I always have a dedicated thief searching for traps ahead of the party under Invisibility. The thief doesn't lift a finger, short of an emergency, just observes. Invisibility is a first priority when the party mage gets to lvl 3. Never cover an area without your scout going ahead of you.

4. rest often.
I never keep scouting a map when low on resources (especially spells, but also hit points etc.).
Make sure to keep enough back up spells to fend of an ambush when you rest. If not, consider leaving the area and come back. Rest close to the edge of the map so you can escape from those 3 ogre berserkers when you're hurt and out of healing spells.

5. anti-mage loadout.
Mages are dangerous. Don't listen to those that say the BG1 is light in magic; it may be true comparatively to BG2, but mages still are the greatest dangers. You need mages of your own (at least two!) that begin loading up on anti-spellcaster spells as soon as possible. It is tempting to go all Fireball, but believe me, when you need that Spell Thrust against the enemy mage's Minor Globe of Invulnerability it will not matter how many more Fireballs you have memorized. Druids: get some insect spells. When you face divine casters, hit them with Melf's acid arrow etc. to have a chance to keep interrupting them.

6. memorize spells in batches (use potions of Genius)
no-reload means that your Diviner has a 1/6 chances of failing to memorize that one Stoneskin scroll in the game - if you gulped a potion of genius. If you didn't it's like 1/3 or worse. Except for abundant lvl 1 spells, I usually memorize in batches to minimize spell learning failures.

7. Don't roll saving throws:
what I mean is, avoid having to roll against a Hold, Finger of Death, Petrify etc. Make sure that either you are immune to the effect, or lowered your saving throw to zero (potion?), or you are out of the way.

8. [special] Frontline charnames:
Bad idea! Everything will target you; every mage will target you. Your meager defenses will fail. You will die!
That being said, I play a frontliner myself most of the time [cue the Austin Powers meme "live dangerously"]. I learned to strategically retreat often. If you have a fighter mage, you can have a few guaranteed rounds of safety on the front lines. But you need a second tank. Keep escape options open. If there is anything (e.g. a mage, cleric, umber hulk etc.) that can disable you (e.g. you don't have a Chaotic Commands or Ring of Free Action against whatever you face), retreat NOW!. You can't just wing it and hope for the best. You will eventually fail your saving throw (see 7) and die!

First success against Doomsayer and I want more details about where the damage came from.

My Lvl4 Mages [Imoen and F/M Charname] Webbed him and Wand of Fired him once to begin. Followed by 5 Magic Missiles plus some sort of Magic Arrows and Darts of Wounding.

Jaheira was equipped with +1Sling and +1Bullets.

Kivan and Ajantis [Comp.Longbow+1&Shortbow+1] were firing Magic Arrows of some sort. I was not exactly sure where they came from except that I was trying not to use the Arrows of Biting. Some at least were Flame Arrows.

Branwen cast Animate Dead which served a vital screening function when Doomsayer finally saved against Web. She also was slinging +1Bullets.

Ajantis finally engaged him with Varscona and was healed twice by Branwen before battle ended.

Later I checked the awesome stats for Doomsayer and saw all those resistances. So I am not sure what tactics actually did the job. Perhaps it was just that the Web spell really held up well.

Any thoughts on what has worked well for you in full party playthroughs???

Tips for a Solo Cavalier

I'm wanting to go through the game with a solo cavalier in the future, and while I know it's possible, I was wondering if anyone had any tips.

The idea behind this character is that he's a traditional heroic paladin, doing whatever is right and just. He eschews any assistance so others can stay safe. He doesn't want anyone else to get hurt by traveling with him.

I'm sure I could make it through without any tips, but I'm curious what ideas you guys might have for making the most out of the character. My idea for weapons was to start out with two handed swords and two handed style, and add in other skills as I found uses for them. Between the Spider's Bane and Carsomyr, he's pretty set for weapons for both games. I figured I'd take halberds next since good two handed swords are (from what I've heard) few and far between in the early parts of SoA, and there are good halberds. Also, I'll be able to keep rolling with two handed style then. Other than that, the class is pretty simple. Once I get spells, things will increase in complexity a bit, but I figure he'll mostly be doing whatever will make him able to deal more melee damage\protect himself.

Any ideas are appreciated, even if I don't use them, so if you've got an idea, let me know! Thanks.

Safana - the ultimate back... err... stabber

So, she scouts ahead invisible, because scouting is a necessity (I play no-reload). Fight commences with the Big Bad guy who begins slinging spells.

Safana closes in for a ... kiss....
*mwaah*

Ekandor is now *my*, I mean *her*, spellcaster, flinging a cone of cold at an ogre berserker, summoning a ghoul to paralyze the other red mage, agganazarizing his own body guards etc.

Later on a stinky Mulahey falls to the charms of Safana as well, casting Hold against the Kobolds he just summoned and buffing my, err... her, party.

Can't wait to see what Daeorn will say to her...

Possible lore/info about BG2 dragons - [MINOR SPOILERS INCLUDED]

While reading about canon dragons of Faerun, I was thinking how BG2 wyrms could fit into the whole Realmslore. We just know their goals/motivations within the frame time of SoA, but I was wondering about a few things:
- how old could Firkraag, Adalon, Thaxll'ssillya and Nizidramanii'y actually be. Are all of them great wyrms?
- their backgrounds before SoA - such long lived creatures definitely should had some influence if not on global scale, then on local at least.
- what are/was most notable enemies/rivals of theirs, over a span of the centuries. Most of dragons have one or few fierce rivals, with whom they fight territorial skirmishes.
- could these four dragons clash with each other in past. Do they know each other?
- what's their relationship with the Cult of the Dragon? Did the cultists approach them with an offering of dracolichdom?
- how powerful, comparing to the mightiest wyrms of the Realms, (i.e Daurgothoth "The Creeping Doom", Tchazzar, Imvaernarhro "Inferno", Larendrammagar "Nexus", Palarandusk "The Unseen Protector" or Raulothim "The Silent Shadow") they could be? I mean sheer magical might. For instance "the Creeping Doom" on top of being a black great wyrm dracolich is a 25th level spellcaster and one of the leaders of the Cult of Dragon. His sheer magical powers could even exceed those of the most epic players like Elminster, Larloch, Sammaster or Ioulaum.

How do you think? Did you ever consider what their stories could be? Did anyone tried to write them down?

For instance I always felt that Firkraag is little too sophisticated for a red dragon. I imagine red wyrms as more impatient and more interested in collecting their hoards or conducting rampaging flights after awaking from long slumber. The whole plot with punishing Gareth Windspear is more fitting for green or black dragon than a red one, at least for my taste. But what do you think?

List of evil (low rep) dreams in BG1

Embrace your restartitis

(minor spoilers identifying stages of the game)

Now I have finally created an account, I guess I am ready for another thread on restartitis!

While I was and always will be a chronic sufferer of restartitis, I have no take > 10 characters all the way through BG1, who are now queuing up ready to play BG2. What is the secret of my success? Embrace the restart!

The game is there for us to enjoy and play, and different parts of the game have different appeals. I will admit, one of my motivations is to create characters to play into BG2 (boosted by a full set of Tomes!) but I also love to try out and play vastly different character ideas.

The first part is rolling stats. Sometimes, there is something oddly satisfying about re-rolling for hours looking for that perfect character, typically to hit the re-roll button just before I realize THAT WAS THE ONE! Phase one of my restartitis will generate around 20 characters, all distinct with their own planned play through, and possibly play most of them through the intro and out of Candlekeep so that they are an easy game to pick up when I am ready.

Now, whenever I fancy starting a new game of BG1, there is probably a pre-rolled character of my own creation, raring to go. This is phase two, the eager playing of a new game, with a 'new' character fresh on the road. How this plays out varies greatly with the character, but enthusiasm wanes as I become bored with this concept, and want to play with something that scratches the itch this one cannot reach. Typically sometime between the bandit camp and finishing the Cloakwood Mines, it is time to scratch that itch, and restart!

This is the key, after hitting 'restart' a few times, I now have a bunch of characters around 4th/5th level, entering the mid-game. At some point, THEY will be the fun character to pick up, and my restart is to actually continue with a character I have not played for a while. Phase 3 will typically get bored somewhere in the middle of chapter 5, but that's cool - as we can now see we are building up a roster of late-game heroes as well, for even later restarts.

Eventually, I pick up these folks in Baldur's gate, and typically can make it all the way to the end now, although sometime run out of steam either just leaving candle keep for the last time, or just as we enter the thieves maze towards the end of the game. The end result is just into double-digits number of characters now waiting to take a run at Athkatla. Indeed, a number of them are just waiting for me to pick them up again, having exited Chateau Irenicus and are now spending some time contemplating their future...

Khalid in BG2: Near death??

I just got to the room where Khalid body is. His status is Near Death!

I assume that is just a bug. Or is there anything that can be done with him? Maybe he changes status to Dead after jaheira's dialog triggers? Could we then conclude that she is the one that kills him?

David the Gnome BG2 no reload challenge

After succesfully finishing BG1 without reloading, David is captured by Irenicus. Let's see how long I last without free action and the greenstone amulet :-)

This will also be no reload with the following exceptions
1- aerie's romance. Have never tried it and i like reading all the options. Not really against the no reload spirit, imho
2- iPad bugs. Just got killed by the werewolves in the circus on one hit. Have allowed to reload for that one and then just used invisibility to get to the final boss. Also a reasonable exception (again, imho)

Right now, just left Chateau Irenicus hating imps, killed the group at the 7 dales by the amazing tactic of web+Fireballs+spider spawn+blind dwarf+ shit, web is finished and all but the barbarian are alive + run sir robin run + bring the imp and wizard (that followed) to the guards in the promenade and help the guards kill them (didnt get xp i think) + go again and kill the dwarf after using around 80-100 arrows(!!) as he was drinking potions. Boromir compared to that dwarf only had a flesh wound.

The thief and his invisibility ring legged it when the web dissapeared so I lost the only loot i needed :-(

Then circus, save my future love, have a premonition of my own death (werewolf bug reload) use the 10' invisibility from the fairy dragon, run up and save the day.

Thats where I am at the moment. Will rest, go get Jan jansen to have my full BG2 party of 3 members and then continue with the wasy quests.

Hopefully at some point i have time again and can keep a diary

So Bards...

$

I never liked Bards. I mean i like the idea of Jack of All Traits and people person, but the whole "and you're literally harming/helping others with playing a guitar" is just absurd... I know about martial music in armies but that's something entirely different. Sure, we shouldn't take fantasy literally but I think we all agree that there are some boundaries. And for me, that boundary is crossed with a guy playing an instrument or singing while his party of buddies is torn to pieces. And he's actually making a difference! I just don't know how to interpret it. Hell, how am I supposed to imagine it without the whole thing not being absurd and ridiculous?? Am I missing something?

But... maybe I'm missing something. I would like to play bard some day but the absurd "combat music" always turn me out... So, I'm asking if anyone thought about how silly the concept is? and maybe found a way to make it believable and plausible somehow?

Thanks

What is with the one-hit kill illusionary werewolves?

Playing BGII on an iPad here after years of playing on the desktop. My joy was suddenly breached as I am instantly killed by Kalah's werewolves (which are illusionary and should only hurt if you attack them). This is supposed to be your first low-level quest where you pick up Aerie early because she takes so long to level. Instead, they just tap you lightly and you are dead if you don't get a hit in first, making this harder than Kangaxx.

Is this a new thing they thought would add some challenge? Or is this an example of really bad pre-release game beta-testing? This is horrible.

I finished the game, but mostly through arena combat. I'm picking up an old saved game and hoping to see more of the game outside the arena. I've made it into the hunters' quarters, but I'm guessing there are additional levels, if nothing else beyond the locked door near the entrance to the hunter's area. How do I move on? Thanks!

Charname's Angels

So, I’m thinking about indulging my Restartitis again. I was reading a post about Safana and thought “What about playing Charname’s Angels”. So here’s what I came up with. This would not necessarily be a ‘goodie goodie’ party for reasons that will become obvious later.

Charname – Male Half-elf Bard (subjective and only because I think it fits the character)
Shar-Teel – Front line Tank
Viconia – Primarily healer
Neera – Arcane caster / I could alternately go Imoen, but why?
Safana – Resident Thief of the party

Here’s where I need advice.

For me, it isn’t a party till I have a full boat (6 characters) and I don’t like having tag-alongs “just for a while”. I’d throw in Jaheira because the party really is lacking tankiness, but she comes shackled with ‘The wife’ who I really don’t want along. And I also don’t believe in cheesy “Dumping someone in a house and never going back” style dealing with paired members. I know it can be done and is quite easy, but I just don’t enjoy doing it.

I’d also considered Faldorn as I’ve never played using her, but I’ve already got a healer and what I really need is a tank. Plus, she would come later in the game anyway. And Viccy is WAY hotter.

I suppose I could make Charname some form of fighter and that would solve everything, but I really want to make him a Flashy and charming jack of all trades, but master of none type character. I’m also kind of going for an Archer type vibe wherein the main character ends up “Romancing” all of the party.

And then there’s the question of BG2.

Suggestions?

Discussion About Ideas For Future Challenges And Play-Throughs

$

Hey guys, I come up with a LOT of ideas for cool (at least in my mind) play-throughs, which is part of the challenge involved in actually playing them! My desire to play with a new character overwhelms my desire to continue playing with a current one. I've somewhat remedied this with a combination of willpower and posting threads dedicated to my play-throughs on this forum. I have two currently, and while both characters are still in BG1, they'll be moving on to BG2 and eventually finishing the game one day, so this is a thread where I'll be posting my ideas for new play-throughs, partly as a way to keep myself from rushing ahead with these characters, and partly as a way to judge people's interest in them. These play-throughs will likely be made into threads of their own, some with a deep story and heavy role-playing of the character, and others with a simple recap sort of style, like my Cavalier. Which style of writing they'll get will be decided partly by myself (because I might not be able to make a good story with all of them) and you guys, since your interest in the character bio I make will likely not always be equal. As I come up with new ideas, I'll post them in the comments, and add them into this first post as well, so you don't have to keep checking the first post for new ones. I'm also including a short directory for readers to understand the format I'm using. It may change slightly over time, but it should remain mostly the same.

Edit: After much personal debate (for possibly silly reasons I've listed in a comment) I've decided to officially let people post their own ideas here. (as opposed to unofficially, since I couldn't stop anyone from posting their own ideas, technically) This isn't done begrudgingly, so please don't think I'm going to hate you for posting anything. Please do post your ideas, especially if you plan to make a thread about the character's journeys. The format I've made for the character info isn't required at all, but feel free to use it if you like. I think it's nice and orderly, so if you agree, then use it at your leisure. Words for everyone! Wait, did I leave off a letter? Oh well...

Format: (spoilered to keep this post as short as possible)
Name: The name of the character.
Challenges: This is going to say either none, mild, medium, or hard, depending on the type of extra challenges I've applied. These challenges will be the party size, reload type (none, minimal, or limitless), and SCS. If I come up with other challenge types, I'll address those in future, but for now that's the only kind of challenges I'll have.
Class: The class of the character. Depending on other parts of the character's game, this could greatly increase or decrease the challenge.
Stats: This will say one of seven different things depending on the total roll of the character. They will be Commoner (>75), Amateur Adventurer (75-79), Standard Adventurer (80-85), Exceptional Adventurer (86-90), Hero (91-95), Demi-God (96-100), Deity (101-108).
Biography: This will always be spoilered, even if it's very short, just to keep the format the same. Unsurprisingly, it's going to be a bio on the character, detailing a bit of their life in Candlekeep and their personality and temperament. Alignment will be addressed in this section.
Without further ado, here are the first two ideas I have.

Tribin "The Lion" Murth
Challenges: Mild: Standard party, minimal reload (only on CHARNAME death), no SCS
Class: Fighter
Race: Halfling
Stats: Standard Adventurer (80-85)
Biography:
Tribin is a proud halfling warrior, refusing to believe that his race makes for poor fighters. He's trained his whole life to become the greatest warrior alive, and although he can't be as strong as his non-halfling counterparts, he is as strong as halflings can be. He's also incredibly dexterous, and quite hardy. While he certainly neglected his studies, he is intelligent, and is a cheerful and generally likable person, though certainly not commanding officer material. His refusal to accept facts and naivety however have made him quite unwise, and while this trait is not necessary for a warrior, it can get him into trouble sometimes. He is lawful good, not because he is a stick up the arse paladin, but because he is a hardworking, honest, and loyal person, who would definitely make a good rank and file soldier. His nickname "the lion" comes from his bravery and sometimes foolhardy courage, which has made him challenge even the most skilled among the watchers to duels. When younger, he would often lose, but always stood up again, refusing to lose until the watcher had surrendered, out of fear of seriously injuring the child. He always knew he had not won by his own skill, but would allow the duel to end, challenging them again at a later date. Eventually, he defeated every watcher in the keep in duels, and now desires to become a soldier and become the strongest among the army.
Merlin
Challenges: Mild: Solo, limitless reload, no SCS
Class: Mage (no kit)
Race: Human
Stats: Hero (91-95)
Biography:
Merlin is a wise and skilled young mage, having learned directly from his foster father, Gorion. His foster father has kept him from learning too much, however, but Merlin has studied on his own as much as he could. He has trained in many areas, and is a skilled person in many ways. He is quite brilliant, having studied, it is said, every book in the great library of Candlekeep. He has a great desire for learning, and so when he exhausted his resources for mental training, he turned to the physical, practicing his speed with sprints and races around the library with Imoen. It took time, but eventually he was able to match her in speed, and with this training he also became more sturdy, and learned how to breathe more efficiently while exerting himself physically. His quite book driven life has made him a bit less sturdy than he could be, however, but he accepts this as the consequence for following a life of magic. (he'll still have a 16 CON, but he's still a mage) He has done little in the way of sheer strength, focusing more on speed and endurance, but he is no weaker than an average man. He has also learned the basics of common grace and courtesy, and is a friendly and polite man. He is neutral good, having been raised in a way that would promote a wholesome and righteous attitude about the matters of life. He does, however, not always adhere to the law, believing that there are inherent flaws in it, and that only people of great intelligence are truly worthy of creating laws. And even then he believes there can be flaws in the system.
Custom PC & NPC Portraits

Building on the original thread, started by @Syntia13, this is intended to be a hub to share alternate, fan-made portraits for the enhanced editions of the series. In order to keep the thread running and make it a comprehensive source for portraits, please abide by the site rules and a few guidelines:

Thread Rules

1: Respect artists' creations and their right to them. If portrait-makers ask that you not edit their work, don't. If a mistake is made, simply edit your post to remove the image, apologize, forgive and forget.
2: Do not share images for which you have not received permission from the artists, when possible.* This is particularly true of art from DeviantArt, which hosts many artists who do not want their work shared elsewhere.
3: If you request that a portrait be made, recognize that the artists in this forum do this simply because they enjoy contributing to the community. Be patient, be respectful and say thank you.
4: Be supportive! Many of the artists here are just beginning to learn how to make portraits. Be positive and constructive in your comments, and avoid pointless negativity.
5: If you are making and posting portraits, state who you used as a model (if applicable), either here or on your website. Understand that this still does not make the likeness your property, and be prepared to remove the image if so requested by the copyright holder.

*Understandably, the source of some older portraits is unknown. If in doubt, go to Google Images and drag the portrait to the search bar. You may find the artist or source through that method. Again refer to Rule 1.

Guide to Using Custom Portraits

Portraits in the enhanced editions use three images in bitmap (.bmp) format, the largest of which is only shown during the epilogue in Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal. The three sizes are 210x330, 169x266 (displayed in the character sheet) and 54x84 (displayed on the right UI bar).*

To use custom portraits for your PC:
1: Navigate to your Baldur's Gate directory in (My) Documents.
2: Drop the custom portraits into the Portraits folder.
3: In the game, select Custom when choosing a portrait and select the medium and small sizes. Alternately, if you have already begun your game, select Customize/Appearance from the character sheet.

To use custom portraits for NPCs:
1: Rename the portrait files to match the NPC whose portraits you want to replace. For example, Jaheira's portraits are named JaheiraL, JaheiraM and JaheiraS. There are some portraits in BG1 that do not conform to this, and those in BG2 have their own naming format. Consult this site.
2: Place the portraits in your override folder, located in the directory where you installed the game.

*Note that after the latest patch, the games allow a single large portrait size to be automatically adjusted to the proper sizes. I currently do not recommend this, as it causes pixelation in the small 54x84 version.
