specialist mage memorization bonus/penalty?

$
0

Some older threads mention that specialist mages get a +-15% bonus/penalty for spells that are/aren't from their specialty school. Is that true?

(That may explain why my mages fail much more frequently than they should.)

Also, if true, how does this effect ultra-high INT: 25 with INT (with potions etc.) would still give a 15% failure chance?

The Tale of the Totemic Druid

Inspired by this tread and thanks to @bbear here I’m going to tell a story about Karasu no Yoru, a totemic druid raised in the Candlekeep and destined to become a major figure in the history of the Sword Coast.

The name of the character is in Japanese and means his name actually is Yoru (night) and he comes from the Karasu (crow) clan known for shamans and spirits.

Here's the character sheet at the start of the game.
image
The main incentive is to find out what it takes to successfully solo the whole game (from the start of BG:EE to the end of BG2:EE) with the totemic druid. There’s a discussion about which class is the hardest for a solo run in that thread and it seems many people vote for a druid. So I’ve decided to test it and will gladly write about it for those who are interested in the concept.

I’m playing on the Core difficulty and here’s my weiDU log:

I consider myself an experienced player, had different playthroughs in the past but have never tried the totemic druid. This kit seems interesting to me because it shows the true, from my point of view, nature of a druid – a summoner. In the past I played as an Avenger and liked it much but the Avenger feels more like a druid/mage, while a Shapeshifter obviously feels more like a fighter/druid. A vanilla druid is fine as well but I just like using a kit and not a vanilla version (if it’s not a dual- or multi-class). So, the totemic druid it is.

I understand the problems that can arise because of the SCS but I hope that my knowledge of the game will help to overcome these difficulties. I seriously think that with some meta-gaming even the power of SCS can be not so dangerous. I think than so bad (yeah) thing as the meta-gaming needs serious countermeasures such as not OP class, not min-maxed stats, smarter AI and so on.

As a rule, I try to role-play my character and his party as much as I can but this time it will be different. And I’m so excited – it’s a challenge, and a good one. I’ll try to play a no-reload run with an option for minimal reloads if the character will be killed but I will feel myself attached to it. Also, your reactions, ideas and just a general discussion is much appreciated ;)))

What Baldur's Gate does right? (Lessons for Spiritual Successors)

$

So we know Baldur's Gate Series has spawned asmall number of spiritual successors:

Neverwinter Nights
Dragon Age
Pillars of Eternity

Just to name the most well known. So I'm curious from a fan's perspective what you think Baldur's Gate did RIGHT that should be focus points for newer successors to take note of?

For me it's always been the class diversity, granted they already had existing rulesets that made balancing easier but the sheer number of classes, kits, multiclasses, and dual classes combined with the number of races and the six party limit gives BG an almost infinite amount of replayability and depth to do challenge modes and so on. It was such a slap in the face when I got Dragon Age Origins expecting a more modern BG to find a measly 3 class system. Honestly I've never found another game since even close to BG's level of class diversity (There's classless hybrid systems like Elder Scrolls but that's a different beast altogether).

So what do you think is it that makes Baldur's Gate such a monumental game even 13+ years after it's sequel came out that modern PC RPGs could really LEARN from?

Berserker->Cleric or Druid and Which Deity?

$

I'm about to start my a trilogy run and I've decided to take a Berserker through BGEE and dual to either a cleric or druid in BGEE2. I'm very torn between these classes so I'm looking for some opinions.

I have done a comparison of both druid and cleric only spells and man are there some good ones on each side.

For the cleric we've got Sanctuary, Animate Dead, Holy Smite, Restoration, Raise Dead, Aerial Servant and Blade Barriers. And of course the three buff spells that make the cleric a melee powerhouse.

Druids have got Insect Plague, Iron Skins, Pixie Dust, Elemental Summoning and Nature's Beauty.

I know the druid spells seem a bit light but Insect Plague, Iron Skins, and Nature's Beauty seem to make up for any other shortcomings.

A big difference seems to come down to weapon choices. My Cleric would probably dual wield FoA and DoE while the druid will have Spectral Brand and Belm.

So many great options and I would really appreciate your thoughts on the matter.

And from an RP perspective which deities would you recommend? I'm thinking Tempus for the cleric and Nobanion for the druid. Both seem to offer fun RP options.

Also, I'm sitting on a 93 roll for a berserker so the stats to dual for a druid aren't a problem. I also know a ranger/cleric would solve all my problems but it feels a bit like cheating to me. Plus I want the Keep as my stronghold in BG2 so I wouldn't dual until after Nalia's quest.

Thanks in advance!

Dwarf and 18 charisma.

If you look at it from a roleplay perspective, why wouldn't it be possible for a dwarf to have 18 charisma?

I'm thinking about creating a dwarf paladin, and the -2 charisma is kind of preventing me from doing this. Is it just a gameplay limitation or would there be a reason for a dwarf not being charismatic?

SCS No-Reload with a band of Specialist Mages

$

Inspired by orginal playthrough-ideas by @Lemernis ("Let the Fates decide") and @SionIV ("Trilogy no-reload 'bad' NPC run"), and convinced that solo'ing is actually easier than playing full parties, I've been thinking of possibly interesting and challenging playthroughs.
Ideas I've come up with so far include Shorties only, Elves only, and Thieves only. Especially the latter sounds really interesting. It would include ideally only pure thieves or fighter/thieves. In BG1 it's easy to form such a band of thieves. A party would consist of Charname (CN male Swashy), Imoen (Adventurer kit from Song&Silence mod), Safana (Bounty Hunter maybe?), Alora (Burglar kit from Song&Silence mod), Skie (maybe a plain Thief), and Coran or perhaps Tiax (CLeric/Thief) since I've got a BG2 mod for him. This sounds like a merry band!
In BG2 it would be difficult to play a similar band of affable scoundrels for a lack of thieves, so I'd probably accept Jan into the group (also because he's quite roguish) and play with mods. A party could include Charname, Tiax (mod Cleric/Thief), Jan Jansen (Illusionist/Thief, Imoen (Adventurer no dual), Yoshimo (Bounty Hunter) to be replaced with Dace Linton (mod Bounty Huntress), Alora (Burglar, mod). Hexxat in BG2EE wouldn't allow me to play the NPC mods I fear.
What I just came up with was to run a group of specialist mages who may only scribe and cast spells from their own schools.

In BG1 there are many specialists. My party would consist of:
- Xzar: Necromancer,
- Xan: Enchanter,
- Edwin: Conjurer,
- Dynaheir: Invoker,
- Quayle: Cleric/Illusionist,
- Charname: CN Female Elven or Gnomish Transmuter.

In BG2 I'd have to edit some of the NPCs. For BG2/TOB my proposed party would consist of:

- Edwin: Conjurer,
- Imoen: edited into Thief-> Invoker, she casts a Magic Missile at Irenicus, and I somehow feel this school fits her best (along maybe with Illusionism, but I'd already have Quayle/Jan for that school); what I don't like is taking her along in BG2 if I don't use her in BG1. One option wuld be to dual her into an Invoker in BG1 after she's met Dynaheir, e.g. level 4. Or I could use Nalia Thief 4 -> Invoker.
- Aerie: Cleric/Abjurer (seems to fit her due to the high WIS requirement and with the Cleric's protector role),
- Xan: Enchanter (mod),
- Jan: Illusionist/Thief,
- Charname: CN Female Elven/Gnomish Transmuter.

I'm really enthusiastic about this specialist mages playthrough. I think it would teach me how to make optimal use of arcane spells.

As to my choice for a Transmuter, well I had only two options open: Transmuter or Diviner. All the other schools are already taken... Transmutation is generally considered to be one of the worst schools, but that's based on their opposition school, Abjuration, which is quite powerful. But things are different if every school but your own school is an "opposition school". Besides the other remaining school is Divination, which would allow me to do nothing but cast Identify, Detect Evil, Detect Invisibility (which is actually a good spell), and at later levels True Sight (a fine spell).

Any thoughts/tips/views are welcome. I'm especially curious as to how viable you consider this on SCS no-reload. Would it be recommendable if I made my charname a Fighter/Transmuter? To have at least some fighting power in my party? Do you agree with my specialist school picks for Imoen/Nalia/Aerie? Any tactical advice?

Kensai/Conjurer/Assassin no reload solo BG2

$

Find out about the Multi-kit mod here instead of asking about it!
Today I've started a BG2:SoA/ToB (another, I lost the saves again in vanilla, but not the ToB saves, just THAT save) run with Kensai/Conjurer/Assassin, and I wanted to post something about this somewhere as it is difficult (I play in Core Rules) in low levels because I can't use armor nor bracers nor anything, but I have an ultra-OP-Bhaalspawn.
so....
I'll role-play this run, she (Darhaina) is Chaotic Evil, but she does like helping so she can mess in other parts, but nothing will be done without a reward!!
I gave her the Cure Light Wounds and Draw Upon Holy Might instead of Vampiric Touch and Larloch's Minor Drain, as she is able to cast Arcane spells but not Clerical spells, so.... Well, I've edited much things, but nothing more relevant than that!
I played a little before taking the screen shots, sorry but I forgot about lvl4 spells, I have none so I think is does not matter.
image

image

image

image

image

image

image

image

image
The Journal of Darhaina, narrated in a pretty epic third person:
After watching the Irenicus torturing the PC, a thief got disintegrated and Imoen opened the door for me, I got out the jail and sent her to sell fried food to Alaska (what means that I kicked her from my party) and went to save the other NPCs for the XP of their quests, went to pick up a Two-Handed sword, an Axe, 3 Potions of Healing I used later and a Dagger+1, I turned off the Mephit-spawning-machine and killed the only one that spawned, answered a rouge Genie that I was going to press the hypothetical button he was talking about and killed the Ogre Mage that the Bastard Genie (is he a Dao or a Djinni?) spawned, killed a group of goblins, looted the room with the Sewage Golem for another Potion of Healing to replace the one I used when fighting the goblins, 3 Potions of Superior Healing (one was used later), a scroll I scribed for 3000 XP (FIre Arrow, level 3) and a Unidentified Long Sword+1. I set a trap and rested, went to fight the Lesser CLay Golems, I hit on one and ran away so he could activate that trap, I killed the other with a Poison Weapon and a Draw Upon Holy Might (through it was immune to Poison :/), went into the room with the jars and the Steam Mephit, I used a Mirror Image but got stunned, killed both mephits and grabbed the treasure, an Unidentified Staff+1 and some gold I think, then I killed another two group of goblins with two Sleep and an innate Horror spells, I picked up to Identify scrolls I can't use but she's going to sell them.

Adopt a monster

Hello everyone,

roaming the realms I have come across poor abandoned
"monsters". In most cases their parents either abandoned them
or they were killed.

Yet what we perceive or call monsters are just living beings like anyone
of us. They need love and affection too so that they can grow and prosper.

Just recently while I was travelling to Ten Towns I met this poor
abandoned polar worm. It was lonely and almost starved if I had not found it.

His name is "Fluffy". Fluffy eats a lot! He likes to play "Catch the meat"
and he is very cuddly. Fluffy needs 3-4 meals a day and likes
to play outside couple of times a day.

He is already house-trained and won't leave any unwanted "surprises"
in the house.

Fluffy is looking for someone he can look up to. Someone who can give him
love and affection (and food!). Someone who can train him in all the necessary ways
a Remorhaz needs to know.

I already taught him to catch a stick! And to bring in the newspaper in the mornings!

If you have a place in your heart for Fluffy let me know and Fluffy will be yours.

image

*Fluffy looks excited in your direction. Will you be his new owner?*

What's this all about?
In this thread you can either offer "monsters" you have met for adoption -
or you can accept such an offer from others and adopt a "monster" yourself.
You can see it as a roleplaying "adopt a monster" thread.
Furthermore time after time you can tell in roleplaying style what you have
done with your adopted friend, what you taught them and about the adventures
you experienced with them.

Disclaimer: This is supposed to be a fun-thread. Stay light-hearted and have fun :)

I am a indecisive buttface. Wich thief kit should my fighter/thief use?

$

An earlier post said I was going to be an evil fighter/thief half-orc using EEKEEPER to get myself a kit because why not. However I find myself horribly indecisive as to what I want to play. Assassin seems fun and honestly I've never played a stealthy character before. It'd be nice to try something new but its likely I'd just fall back into old hack and slash habits, in wich case swashbuckler would be awesome to try and net me more thief points. Still, perhaps theres something shadowdancer offers that I'm not aware of. Note that I do not want to be a bounty hunter. I know they're powerful and probably alot of fun but I don't want to resort to trap cheese just yet.

Also, if anyone knows, does changing kits with EEKEEPER work flawlessly or do I need to add abilities I didn't get from my first level? Like, say, if I change from ranger to archer, do I gain all the called shots I am do or do I need to level first or add them manually in EEkeeper?

Please help this indecisive twit be the best half-orc he can be.

I recently tried to use this combination, but whilst under the effects of Tenser's Transformation, my Blade could not enter an Offensive Spin.

Is this a bug, or are these supposed to be mutually exclusive?

Also, does Tenser's Transformation work with Haste/IH?

Thanks!

So how do you feel about baldur's gate atm?

$

I like this game, i like it a lot, but then, i played it for almost 15 years. I'm tired of the main history atm, sometimes i force myself onto a run, to just gave it up later when i reach middle++ game, and this is happening both in BG:EE and BG2:EE.

Ok, some ppl maybe flame me, others will say that i have to use more mods (i used almost everything avaliable for new tastes), others maybe feel the same way.

So some ppl will ask: Why r' u making a thread to share this? Well the answer is, i'm curious with one single situation.

The fact i gave up many runs is a show of boringness, yes. But what can explain why i START so many times? What compel me to start new runs over and over for 15 years without getting bored of starting new games on Baldur's Gate?

Is every RPG like this? Hell, no. That's i'm sure about. I can't even think in restart a Heroes V or VI run without starting to feel bored. Mass Effect? Has the inverse effect on me, i can maybe play a middle + game from ME2 forward, but start a mass effect 1 from the start? Never (atm). Dragon Age 2 is the same, can't even feel compeled to play that again... so what's the answer for Baldur's Gate Mojo?

The answe is simple my friends, the game system. When i start a new character, i can see him into a probally future with many different buildings. Another game that make me feel the same (but the urge to play sustain for a shorter time than Baldur's Gate) is Neverwinter Night 2. The worst main history i played, but i liked so much that engine that i made it to the end.

SO now, the main point of this post:

Why not make new adventure histories inside Baldur's Gate (and Oblivion Engine of NWN2 as well if you ppl have the Copyrights). Make them short if needed, some you start at low level others at a mid level and some few at high level. Tell short tales with these micro adventures. Some could be crossover histories with Bhaalspawn saga, other could (and should) be totally new and different adventures.

Would WotC allow this? Has ATARY any saying in adventures that doesn't make use of Bhaalspawn saga? Only use the engine and the D&D system?

Hell, you ppl revived this engine and now is that? End of the game? Maybe the famous adventure X (or Y) and that's it? Explore your product, because we have something good here, let's make a good use of it.

So after a long time with this heavy and hard to understand feeling in my chest, i think i finally got it right in how to share my feelings on the actual moment of Baldur's Gate and Infinite Engine.

No reload-no(almost) metagaming trilogy run

$
0
0
The point of the run is to do a trilogy with the following rules :
- no reload
- core rules. Max hp at level up (really useless but for some reason, i always do that)
- keep the original xp cap in soa (3mxp). The 8m cap just kills the game when you play solo
- no metagaming abuse : forbidden to attack neutral groups before speaking with them, forbidden to use short term prebuffing. The authorized prebuffs are either long term buffs or before an encounter previously scouted. Prebuffs or potions for traps are forbidden.
- metagaming regarding the order or quests should be avoided. That means no starting with basilisks,...

The point is to be as close as possible from a first play through.

Given these rules, i need a thief component for my character. Traps would be otherwise too deadly to be dealt with without using prebuffing or potions.
Arcane magic being also essential i had to choose between a illusionist / thief and a fighter/mage/thief
The illusionist/thief is stronger for the end game (level 9 spells, hla traps) but the fmt is better before.

I finally chose the fmt.

Alright, alright, before you roll your eyes at me and sigh, this perennial discussion seems to have resurfaced over in 'Teh Meme' thread again, with some pretty good suggestions too, so rather than clog that thread up with OT stuff let's gather them all here. (Or of course we could summon Xzar to perform thread necromancy on about a dozen other similar threads!

Does anyone have a link to a guide suggesting which encounters in BG1 need to be prepped with various potions other than Health. -Speed and Invisibility I can imagine, but when to use stuff like Giant Strength and Heroism??

So far, other than Health, the only potion I have used was the weird Strength potion from Carnival. That was so Imoen could tote a bushel of Ankheg shells to Beregost.

I do not have access to the potion and scroll bags in BGEE and find myself amassing quite a hoard of them in Beregost and am still in Chap. 3.

~Also, is there some place where I can get good value for magical items such as Chainmail+1,etc. that I am not using.

Ditto for Ankheg shells after I have the Ankheg Armor from Talruum. Thanks.

I am using an ipad 2, enhanced version of B.G. I’m stuck on the way from candlekeep to beregost.
I’ve searched the forum for hints but found nothing to help me yet. I came out of candlekeep until I reached the east edge of the first wilderness map. I cannot go further east. I also traveled north and south and reached edges i cannot pass.
The global map shows a lot more area. In the game, or on the local map, if I tap at the edge, I see a little wheel. When I tap that wheel, the display changes to the global map. I tried zooming in; no change.
How do I journey to beregost, or to anywhere?
Thanks for your help.

Come share your odd gaming habits! What do you refuse to do in BG? What wierd ideas do you love?

$

It seems like a lot of people like to make their games more "realistic" or more "awesome!" by creating their own rules or play-styles. Many people refuse to use certain tactics, or like to adopt some odd, unorthodox techniques for roleplaying reasons. Many others like to sacrifice POWER! for STYLE . Other times people do things or refuse to do things because it would be out of character (like refuse to case Animate Dead with cute little Aerie like @Dragonspear ). Others, like @belgarathmth don't enjoy using bags of holding or switching/carrying copious amounts of items because they think it breaks immersion.

So I thought I'd start a thread where everyone can share their oddities! A chance to share your ideas and eccentricities.

Okay, I'll start.

I never backstab with quarterstaves, because I think sneaking around then poking someone looks lame!
