Your method for distributing stats? (other than min/maxing)

$
0
0
Back when I played the original BG1 more than a decade ago, I used to min/max the most useful stats for my character class. Consequently, I ended up with a lot of paladins with only 3 intelligence. ;-)

With the release of BG:EE, I decided that I wanted to roleplay a character similar to the method described in Tord's famous "Lilly Black" playthrough (see here: image) - which meant creating a character without absurd-looking and obviously OP'd stats.

I made a few "rules" for myself:
1. My character's stat total would not be higher than the highest stat total out of the NPCs (which meant less than Dorn's 90).
2. I would use the individual stats of the other NPCs as a barometer for deciding my own.
3. My char would have only one fully maxed stat.

Here's the character that I eventually created for my current playthrough, a female human vanilla ranger (it took a helluva long time to decide on a portrait, race, and class, but those are topics for other threads, LOL):
image

After only a few rolls, I had rolled an 88 stat total - a very respectable roll, but not higher than Dorn's 90, and only equal with Ajantis' stat total.

Here's a basic rundown of how I decided each stat:

Strength - I imagine my character as having above average strength, but not being a hulking amazon. Looking over the strengths of other NPCs (with emphasis on the female ones), the spectrum runs from 8-9 str wimps like Alora and Imoen, to a singularly unique, 18-plus str amazon in Shar-Teel. I felt that my character should basically be smack in the middle, in the range of warrior-priests like Branwen or Jaheira, so I settled on 14. (Incidentally, as a ranger she's required to have at least 13 str anyway.)

Dexterity - I imagine my char as being very fit, and obviously skilled with a bow (as you can see from her picture), but perhaps just a tad less athletic than a master thief like Imoen or a trained dancer like Skie. So 17 dext was appropriate IMO.

Constitution - I imagine my char as being fairly healthy, enough to get a bonus from her con, but at the same time, I was conscious of not raising too many of her stats too high. So I settled on 15.

Intelligence & Wisdom - I basically just replicated Kivan's and Jaheira's stats for these, since I imagine that my ranger would basically share the same outlooks and sensibilities as they do (i.e: being "nature smart" instead of "book smart"). I imagine my character as being respectably smart and sensible, but not necessarily an outstanding genius in either category. As someone who was raised and educated amidst the books of Candlekeep's library, but always with a secret focus on the outside world, I imagine that she's educated just enough to be literate (which would mean at least 9 int.), but her wisdom should be emphasized thereafter.

Charisma - I decided that this would be the stat that I'd fully max, as there are no other NPCs with 18 char (except maybe Keldorn IIRC) and I wanted to give my char a unique trait that would make her stand out from the other NPCs. Besides, I imagine my char as someone who will generally get a favorable reaction from others (just look at her pic after all, LOL), and from a roleplaying perspective, it would best explain how she'd be capable of gathering and keeping together a motley collection of mercenaries.

So there's my story... Anyone else have their own?

Wand of Lightning Issue?

If I remember correctly in Vanilla BG clicking on an enemy with the wand of lightning uses a charge.

But with BGEE whenever I use the wand it shows a little number that counts down as I click. But my wand doesn't fire off a bolt.

I this a bug or something or am I just not using the wand correctly?

Should I skip BG 1 to BG2?

This has been going on in my mind for quite a while now. I have been playing BG1 for two days and I still can't grasp the experience. The party members annoy me, the villains are too hard to kill, and the exploration is just not that engaging to me. Every time I go to the Nashkel Mines my whole groups gets ambushed and killed. I try to gain experience but that eventually led me to get killed over and over again. I REALLY WANT TO ENJOY IT! But I just can't.

Before I started playing the game, I felt the need to play around with BG2 first. I was so intrigued with the game since I was able to have conversations with my companions, cast lots of spells, level up, and so forth. After watching the scene with Irenicus killing a bunch of fighters and mages, I felt that it was necessary to continue my journey by just playing the sequel.

Should I play through the first one first or not?

Infinity Adventure Maker

The premise is simple and could be a HUGE profit maker: a campaign maker for Infinity Engine style adventures.

Just think, you can make your own IE quest and send it out on the web for others to play.

This is just a basic premise, but I can't be the only one who sees great potential here.

Is there anything similar to Mirror Image Fix from Spell Revisions/SCSII for BG2EE?

$

originally in BG2 (and every IE game) mirror imaged had the bad habit of absorbing any AoE spells thrown at the caster. Spell Revisions contained an optional component which killed this behavior, and made MI all the more adorable, because now fireballs thrown under fire immune chars no longer ate all their mirror images. (and surprise AoE spells made little mages go all over the place on both sides)

however... sadly, this was done by patching bgmain.exe, and spell revisions was not updated for BGEE/BG2EE.

my question is, is there any alternative for BG2EE, or is anybody working on updating it?

New Game +

I have NEVER done this... in the whole 16 years I've played BG1 & BG2. Take the character after finishing the game and starting a new game using that character with the levels and equipment he gain from the previous run. I'm so tempted now. But am curious if this was common amongst other players?

Which BG1 minor NPC would you have liked to have returned in BG2 (Joinable or otherwise)

I've been thinking about some BG1 NPCs who had interesting stories or fun cameos. I personally would have liked to see many again. I'm sure many share this sentiment, but I don't know which characters seemed most popular.

So now I want to see what characters stuck in the minds of most players. I'd like to see some people share what characters from BG1 they would have liked to see in SoA or ToB, and perhaps a word or two about how they would like the reunion to go down (ie place, situation, moment, etc.)

It could be anyone, from Eltan Sivlershield to Larry, Darryl and Darryl

I'll post one of mine below and eagerly await your opinions!

I think there is an SCS option for this right?

What are the thoughts on this generally?
It seems it is a trade off since with it:
- Sorcerer cannot summon Planetar after Planetar (activateable only once)
BUT
- But your F/M that made it lvl 18 finally does not need to trade its singular cast of Time Stop to choose between a Planetar or Comet or whatever.

Is the SCS compromise balanced or should it be viewed as unfair?
(How is it in PnP?)

Firkraag (Spoilers)

How much did BGEE buff him? He's not close to this powerful in the original game. He's hitting for 40+ damage on Keldorn with armor of faith and he's pretty much getting every single hit through (Keldorn has -14 AC) not to mention i'm not touching him, at all. -1 Thac0 on CHARNAME and 2 Thac0 on Keldorn and i'm not getting rid of any of his stoneskins, even with haste up i'm not getting damage onto him.

-14 AC on Keldorn, 125 fire resistance and a shit ton of buffs, and he falls in seconds.

I actually lost a no-reload game now to Firkraag, and that's never happened before.

I'm using 3 fire elementals and 2 mountain bears, haven't even gotten him to barely injured.

Using EE Keeper to use your favorite BG1EE NPC Party in BG2EE

Just curious if anyone besides me did this?
I used EE Keeper to export two my favorite party members from the final save of BG1EE and imported them into BG2EE. Xzar and Montaron. I know the're in BG2EE already as plot related quest, But I wanted them back beyond that quest, So I waited until I finished the Harper Quest/Jaheira Romance before i imported them into my party through Multiplayer. Then save game and copy back to single player. I also extract the're voiceset from the first game and into the BG2EE override folder. Even though the BG2 NPC's don't have pyshical dialog with Xzar and Montaron. They do somehow many to piss them off... some manage to get Xzar to call them a Harlot lol

Your favourite CHARNAME?

A few days ago in a thread about the Cleric/Thief @Lemernis posted a link to a website where people can post their favourite player characters they ever created. Here is the link: http://www.bgthewide.com/Pages/BG1EEFavePCs.aspx

This made me wonder who my fellow forum members' favourite creations are. I'm not asking which character class/kit you like the best, or which is the most powerful build you've ever accomplished (although a character's class and his power level are undoubtedly factors to take into account). I'm talking about the character concept as a whole. This includes the character's backstory you've come up with, their personality, their alignment, how you roleplayed these characteristics, their class/kit, how your character's personality influenced the way they practised their profession, character growth/development, maybe some funny or moving experiences your character had in the game, etc.

I think I have two favourites:
A CG Swashbuckler/Mage who was very charismatic (18 starting stat) and initially overconfident. Even still in Candlekeep he considered himself an excellent swordsman, while he definitely wasn't. His overconfidence made him prone to take risks. So he had to learn modesty the hard way, realizing that he might have bested a certain tougher opponent, but that he had to thank his victory to a large stock of healing potions rather than his fighting skills. He then started to adjust his arcane skills to enhance his swashbuckling skills. He used his magic almost exclusively to buff himself and if necessary debuff opponents so that he became a more fearful swordsman (spells like haste, stoneskin, mirror image, blur, protection from magical weapons, innate DUHM). His progress was gradual. At the lower levels, the lack of proficiency points for my dual wielder hurt, but in SOA he became a very complete character, with most thief skills well developed, his (dualwield and scimitar) proficiencies maxed out, enough memorizable spells. He could do pretty much everything.

Teyl, my halfling Cleric/Thief (Strifeleader of Cyric mod kit) was the first character I managed to roleplay as evil in an enjoyable way. I even considered him likable. I had given him a few 'soft spots' (nature, beautiful women, art), which affected his behaviour in certain events. He was a very cunning type, deceptive and manipulative. And he had to be, because he was a halfling of average strength, so not a strong fighter or even a reliable backstabber. Instead, he was very adept at setting traps and using poisons (the poison weapon ability comes with the Strifeleader kit I played). Teyl required a lot of micromanagement (with the use of cleric spells, careful scouting in stealth mode, setting traps, poisoned backstabs), which I really liked. Despite his lack of physical prowess and arcane firepower, he never felt like a weak character (nor as a relentless killing machine, so pretty well-balanced). The only reason he "died" was because he got charmed in the Cloakwood Mines, and getting charmed means instant death for solo characters.
So please let me know: Who are your favourite, most memorable charnames, and why??

The forum says spoilers so yeah....

Anyway, at that part again in Throne of Bhaal when you're doing the second test in the pocket plane. Alianna the supposed mother of the main guy is saying she was a priestess of Bhaal. Doesn't Gorion claim him and your mother were once lovers in BG1? Why would he be banging a priestess of Bhaal? Is he lieing or is this test made up?

Just wondering....

Custom PC & NPC Portraits

Building on the original thread, started by @Syntia13, this is intended to be a hub to share alternate, fan-made portraits for the enhanced editions of the series. In order to keep the thread running and make it a comprehensive source for portraits, please abide by the site rules and a few guidelines:

Thread Rules

1: Respect artists' creations and their right to them. If portrait-makers ask that you not edit their work, don't. If a mistake is made, simply edit your post to remove the image, apologize, forgive and forget.
2: Do not share images for which you have not received permission from the artists, when possible.* This is particularly true of art from DeviantArt, which hosts many artists who do not want their work shared elsewhere.
3: If you request that a portrait be made, recognize that the artists in this forum do this simply because they enjoy contributing to the community. Be patient, be respectful and say thank you.
4: Be supportive! Many of the artists here are just beginning to learn how to make portraits. Be positive and constructive in your comments, and avoid pointless negativity.
5: If you are making and posting portraits, state who you used as a model (if applicable), either here or on your website. Understand that this still does not make the likeness your property, and be prepared to remove the image if so requested by the copyright holder.

*Understandably, the source of some older portraits is unknown. If in doubt, go to Google Images and drag the portrait to the search bar. You may find the artist or source through that method. Again refer to Rule 1.

Guide to Using Custom Portraits

Portraits in the enhanced editions use three images in bitmap (.bmp) format, the largest of which is only shown during the epilogue in Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal. The three sizes are 210x330, 169x266 (displayed in the character sheet) and 54x84 (displayed on the right UI bar).*

To use custom portraits for your PC:
1: Navigate to your Baldur's Gate directory in (My) Documents.
2: Drop the custom portraits into the Portraits folder.
3: In the game, select Custom when choosing a portrait and select the medium and small sizes. Alternately, if you have already begun your game, select Customize/Appearance from the character sheet.

To use custom portraits for NPCs:
1: Rename the portrait files to match the NPC whose portraits you want to replace. For example, Jaheira's portraits are named JaheiraL, JaheiraM and JaheiraS. There are some portraits in BG1 that do not conform to this, and those in BG2 have their own naming format. Consult this site.
2: Place the portraits in your override folder, located in the directory where you installed the game.

*Note that after the latest patch, the games allow a single large portrait size to be automatically adjusted to the proper sizes. I currently do not recommend this, as it causes pixelation in the small 54x84 version.

If you like the portraits you see here or at any of the sites below, leave a comment here or on the artist's website. We love making portraits, and we love hearing how you connect to them through the game.

If BG were a game of DnD...

How do you think it would be different? A few things come to mind, for one thing one moment Aerie is sobbing about her lost limbs, the next moment hey, you just found a scroll of flight. All problems solved forever.

For another thing I was just in that area where you need to put a beholder eye in a pot of red liquid then activate a machine. This is easy to figure out because the beholder dies there and you have an eye and hey, its those circle arrow thingies that mean do stuff.

Imagine trying to figure this out in a normal DnD game.

I imagine my players will have tried to tunnel out eventually.

another problem is doors that require locks. I imagine it would go like this.

DM:You fail to open the lock.
Thief:What?! I invested all my thief skills into open locks! I TOOK A POTION OF MASTER THIEVERY! I have enchantments up the wazoo to increase my lock opening skills and its still stuck?!
DM:...Er...Yes.
Thief:...How long would it take us to break the door down?
DM:Er. The door is solid metal-
Thief:You said it was wood.
DM:Fine! Wood! But its going take far too long to break down.
Thief:Bullshit. Wizard? Get your fireballs ready.
DM:Its enchanted against magic!
Thief:Luckaly we have a barbarian.
DM:It will take several days to chop through!
Thief:Well, we're waiting then.
DM:...Just go get the sewer golem activation stone already!

How BG1 NPCs are treated in BG2 - huge spoilers

I noticed some venting about how BG1 NPCs end up in BG2 in several different threads recently, and for what it's worth I totally agree. Of course the joinable ones that you can continue adventuring with are developed well enough. But even there I think there is some dissatisfaction. It would be impossible to please everyone, though, of course. For both joinable and non-joinable reappearing adventurer NPCs.

My own brief takes:

Imoen - I guess I can live with her becoming more angst-ridden, and the murky metaphysical Bhaal essence soul stuff. But I personally liked her a whole lot better as a chipper pure Thief. And I know she duals well to Mage. I know. I still don't like her that way, i.e., as a spellcaster. I realize I'm probably in the minority there.

Minsc- Minsc I have no problem with in BG2. I know there's a lot of folks who feel his comedic relief schtick wears thin quickly. It kind of does for me too. But he is too endearing for me to go as far as disliking him. What endears him in BG1 isn't compromised in BG2.

Jaheira - I'm not a fan of romances in the BG series. So while she has a lot to offer in that regard, it's not a major draw for me. I guess her quest is pretty good (though I've rarely had her in the BG2 party and can't remember much about it anymore). Honestly, I liked her much better paired with Khalid, as it felt to me like their personalities sort of resonated with, and enhanced, one another.

Khalid - I know he has to die as a plot device for the Jaheira romance, but I actually liked Khalid a lot. I sort of missed him in BG2. I would have loved to see him develop into a Fighter-Mage with an additional tome or something (he was originally conceived as a F/M, I believe. He'd be multi-classed but same idea as if he'd dualed?)

Dynaheir - It bugs me a little that they killed her off. I guess it has to be in order to not have her paired with Minsc, though. I guess I can accept it.

Edwin - Original developers get the gold star here for developing him in BG2, as it is hilariously well done.

Viconia - I think they did okay here. Again, I'm no big fan of the romances, but hers is tolerable. Sort of like Edwin I think they wisely didn't veer much from what made her successful in BG1 and in fact developed it well.

Faldorn - Can't believe they made her an adversary (even making you kill her off). And a sort of fanatical crazed one at that. I would like to have seen her developed into more of a cool cucumber spy type. She is spying for her order in BG1, actually. Anyway, as a TN type of character I like to imagine her as much more poised and centered.

Garrick - At least they didn't do anything odd with him in BG2. If he can't be playable in BG2, that's fair enough. He's not the most popular NPC to begin with, so I didn't expect him to be playable. But I'm at least grateful that they didn't do anything jarring with his presence.

Coran and Safana - Possibly the biggest fail of all. Two of my favorite NPCs--and ones that I really don't see turning on the PC. If they had been evil, maybe. I suppose Safana has it in her as a CN character. But Coran? Nah.

Xzar and Monty - Okay, this is actually the biggest fail now that I think of it. What were they thinking?

Ajantis - I only recently learned that he makes a cameo in which he is doomed to die. (Or possibly if I knew it back when I had forgotten it.) I guess this does not trouble me too greatly. I liked him well enough, but it's okay with me that he doesn't reappear as joinable. We do have Keldorn and Anomen in BG2.

Quayle - I was never clear--is this supposed to be the same Quayle from BG1? He is totally incongruous with BG1 Quayle. This is a fail, although not a major one. It just doesn't feel anything like the character from BG1.

Tiax - Here they did alright. He's pretty funny in BG2, and very much still in character.

The Enhanced Edition NPCs I have yet to try in BG2, so I'll leave that to others to speak to.

Druid and Ranger "Charm Person or Mammal"

Does this spell really work on people? Or does the target usually make the save against it? I have a game going with Faldorn, and it occurred to me that I've never really tried using this spell on humanoids. Is it a waste of a spell slot? (Other than for animals, I guess; because having a bear help out in a wilderness fight could certainly be an asset.)

Neera - is there a plot past Adoy? is there romance development?

Basically, I wanna juggle all the new NPCs rotating in one spot in the party and do all their quests.
Will removing Neera break romance options etc. even if I come back to get her later?

A "head canon" thread - how does the NPC come to life in your own imagination? (expect spoilers)

$

The NPCs all take life in our imaginations uniquely, and we develop our own personal vision of them.

One example for me is Faldorn, who I'm using now for only the second time in nearly 15 years of playing the game. Because she is charged by her order with the task of investigating the Iron Throne, and because of the True Neutral alignment required for druids which is supposed to be all about balance, I'm currently imagining her as a poised, coolly serene spy. And for this game I made her a whole lot better looking:

image

(She has a Charisma of 15, let's not forget.)

This conception is loosely inspired by Scarlet Johansson's portrayal of Black Widow in the Avengers.

Now, from the standpoint of her lines in the game, about all we get is that she's 1) rather terse, 2) totally devoted to the Oak Father, and 3) once or twice perhaps (if at all) she's apt to voice her contempt towards civilization, given that she is as a member of the Shadow Druid sect. She will get into it with Jaheira, a Harper who embraces civilization. But in my game Jaheira and Khalid left the party much earlier, and I don't expect their return.

And then of course in BG2 Faldorn is developed into more of a hardcore fanatic. So if we take that into account I guess I could have played her more as sort of a grunting, feral, stick figure of a Shadow Druid. But that doesn't seem like as much fun to me.

In my own current game she does have her radical sensibilities about civilization being a blight. But she is tasked with being a spy, essentially. So she does not wear her heart on her sleeve. She keeps her inner convictions under wraps. She is reserved in general, and definitely about her most heartfelt beliefs. And that is in the interest of being effective in completing her mission. I would say that is in accord with high Wisdom.

I felt it would be enjoyable to take some slight liberties with the character concept to make her a little more complex and spice up the game a little bit. I'd like to think that my concept of Faldorn for this game remains roughly within the vague framework the game gives us.

Anyway, that's just one example.

What are some of the ways that the NPCs for either BG1 or BG2 get more development in your own head as you play them?
