Problem with the radiant heart paladins

$

So here's what happened:
I'm a chaotic neutral Mage so I like to do random things sometimes. I wasn't to worries about the paladins I killed in windspear hills (never liked paladins lol) so I told Garren to bite me. I then went back to the city straight to the docks and a group of badass paladins appeared, so naturally as a chaotic neutral I changed my mind and went to see Garren, he fixed the issue with the paladins, I saved his kid and all is happy. But the paladins are still standing at the entrance to the docks and I can't kill them lol. How can I fix this? I really don't wanna go back and start again (didn't keep any early save games because I'm an idiot lol). Please any help would be much appreciated.

Zero'd Stats?

One thing I found somewhat funny is how instant death occurs if any stat at all reaches zero. With the case of the Rod of Terror which reduces CHA permanently it can result in permanent death.

I can understand how having 0 STR, DEX and CON result in death (inability to move, intolerance to pathogens, etc.) and I'd assume 0 INT means brain death, but how would 0 WIS and CHA result in death? What would having 0 WIS and CHA even be like? I'd like to hear some interpretations.

The exploits of Teyl, the Evil Strifeleader/Thief (no-reload, initially solo) Spoiler alert!

Hello everyone, after my halfling bounty huntress's abrupt death in Gullykin at the hands of Jenkal, it is time for Teyl Shimmerdusk to enter the stage. Teyl is another halfing but one much darker of heart than the late Nelsy: a NE (shadowkeepered) Strifeleader of Cyric/Thief.

image

image

Teyl, unlike his megalomanic and reckless gnomish counterpart Tiax, is a cunning, conniving and calculating figure. He isn't overtly evil or violent nor does he enjoy cruelty or the suffering of others just for the sake of it. He takes good care of his appearance and image, is generally polite to strangers and even willing to do "good" if he sees personal benefits that make his benevolence worthwhile. He has no reservations about making promises or accepting commitments he won't be likely to live up to, if such behavior serves his interests. In such situations Teyl tends to avoid outright lies though, preferring to rely on ambiguity or omission of information in order to manipulate reality in his favor, without having to fear that any blame is going to be pinned on him. His subtlety and seemingly mild manners may not make him a prototypical Cyricist, but his ways might well be the more effective, or so at least he believes.
The presence of such guiding figures of unquestionable moral calibre as Tethoril, Imoen, the priests of Oghma and above all Gorion have given Teyl a sense of morality he might otherwise not have had, but unlike the people that surround him Teyl believes that everyone ought to look after their own interests. Teyl appreciates nature, female beauty, and art.

Teyl isn't a physically imposing figure, even for a halfling. He makes up for this however with his wit, his knowledge of poisons, an affinity with trap setting, and the powers bestowed upon him by Cyric.

His stats are the result of a legit 93 roll (in a best of 100). After starting the game I reluctantly changed the distribution of his stats in shadowkeeper to fit his character better, i.e. lower STR (the original roll was actually 17), higher INT and CHA. The high CON (also original roll) can be justified in part by his exposure to the poisons he experiments with, which has fortified his health. On the other hand I favored Teyl by maxing out his DEX.

Like Nelsy, Teyl will be partly relying on traps to survive, since I'm (again) playing/experimenting with a mod called 'trap revisions'. This mod, as its name implies, changes the trap setting system. A trap's damage output and other effects depend on the level of the trap (not the player). The level is decided by the number of skill points invested in set traps (so one could go way over 100 skill points, to get stronger traps). Traps are categorized in different tiers: basic, advanced, expert, master, with master being the HLA traps. Setting a single trap costs between 50 and 2500 gold depending on its tier. The mod introduces a number of new traps, some of them class-specific, such as the cleric/thief-only 'divine trap'. The trap revisions mod is the main reason I'm playing BGT (rather than EE, for which the mod isn't available as of yet). The readme can be found here: http://www.shsforums.net/topic/45268-trap-revisions/.

I awarded Teyl with a second set trap skill at level 1, one more than a normal thief and one less than a bounty hunter (who gets other benefits besides 3 traps at level1) in the aforementioned mod. I did this so that it actually makes some sense investing skillpoints in trap setting from the outset. (Being able to set only one trap until I get to level 6 as a thief, is little incentive to develop one's trap-setting skills early on.)
I also gave him a set of Shadow thief apprentice armor, which at AC6 gives a +1 AC advantage over normal studded leather as well as a 5% bonus to HiS. I did this mainly for esthetic reasons, as normal studded leather looked awfully light brown on Teyl, who prefers black, and anthracite.
Both adaptations of the original character are slight cheats I'm aware, but by no means game-breaking.

I'll be playing core rules, with maximum hitpoints for all characters in the game.

HELP Needed {Most Annoying}

Hi, not sure if this a bug or what but jesus it's so annoying that i might have to restart to whole game.
because i had to change from having a good clan to becoming very bad.

Basically on Chapter 2:
Anomen revenging his sister's death{which i kind of} told him to Seek revenge on Saerk which he does and kills everybody. Which then makes both Aerie and Keldorn both leave the party. And then to make things worse you end up having random attacks from Amonian Legionaire's accompanied by a few Wizards, which appear randomly every so often
. The only way to get rid off them is 2 keep killing them {which are pretty damn hard} or rest. So annoying i feel like breaking the pc.

Is their a way to stop them from coming?

A sixth for my evil party?

My next playthrough will be a half orc thief/fighter with using EE keeper to make thief assassin and I will dual wield daggers because style. More importantly, this will be my first evil party. In BG2 its obvious who I'll have with me but for BG1 I'm coming to a bit of a dilemma.

So far I will have Shar-Teel, Dorn, Edwin and Viconia. With two front liners, thief handled and arcane and divine both delt with I find myself unsure who to recruit as my sixth. Baeloth would be nice but I'm using BG1NPC banter pack because I'm addicted to story and plot (Seriously. I think I need a support group) and I'm fairly sure Baeloth has no new banters. Faldorn would add a bit more divine power and round out my party gender wise (Woo! Gamer OCD!) I also never really traveled with her before. Kagain would add alot of physical power to an already very melee oriented group, and I never actually played with him in my party for longer then one minute (I didn't even know he existed when I was a kid). I also am considering Safana because then I can focus on stealth skills instead of worrying about locks and traps but shes also not evil for some reason.

Any advice? As you can tell I'm not very good at planning mechanically effective parties since all my reasons have little to do with stats and how well those three would work with the others, so advice in this area would be greatly appreciated as well.

So Bards...

I never liked Bards. I mean i like the idea of Jack of All Traits and people person, but the whole "and you're literally harming/helping others with playing a guitar" is just absurd... I know about martial music in armies but that's something entirely different. Sure, we shouldn't take fantasy literally but I think we all agree that there are some boundaries. And for me, that boundary is crossed with a guy playing an instrument or singing while his party of buddies is torn to pieces. And he's actually making a difference! I just don't know how to interpret it. Hell, how am I supposed to imagine it without the whole thing not being absurd and ridiculous?? Am I missing something?

But... maybe I'm missing something. I would like to play bard some day but the absurd "combat music" always turn me out... So, I'm asking if anyone thought about how silly the concept is? and maybe found a way to make it believable and plausible somehow?

Thanks

Imoen's comment at the start of the adventure

Started a new game at bg:ee (could not find time to play bg2 and felt disconnected from my character there) I realised something when Imoen joined the party at the beginning of the new chapter:When we killed a monster for the first time (alousy gibberling, as it turned out to be) she commented 'good on you if you save the day!'

I think this was her happy comment she used back in BGT games when party rep was high, but in bg:ee she always does this comment when the party kills a monster for the very first time. She wants to encourage the player perhaps? Can anyone try and start a new game and confirm this? :

Tips for a Solo Cavalier

I'm wanting to go through the game with a solo cavalier in the future, and while I know it's possible, I was wondering if anyone had any tips.

The idea behind this character is that he's a traditional heroic paladin, doing whatever is right and just. He eschews any assistance so others can stay safe. He doesn't want anyone else to get hurt by traveling with him.

I'm sure I could make it through without any tips, but I'm curious what ideas you guys might have for making the most out of the character. My idea for weapons was to start out with two handed swords and two handed style, and add in other skills as I found uses for them. Between the Spider's Bane and Carsomyr, he's pretty set for weapons for both games. I figured I'd take halberds next since good two handed swords are (from what I've heard) few and far between in the early parts of SoA, and there are good halberds. Also, I'll be able to keep rolling with two handed style then. Other than that, the class is pretty simple. Once I get spells, things will increase in complexity a bit, but I figure he'll mostly be doing whatever will make him able to deal more melee damage\protect himself.

Any ideas are appreciated, even if I don't use them, so if you've got an idea, let me know! Thanks.

How do you guys pronounce certain names in BG

$

I've been thinking about a couple names that I have pronounced incorrectly over the years (took me for ever to realize that her-me-oh-nee was incorrect...stupid movies)

For example, the "Kh" in Khalid sound is meant to represent the "strong k" that you find in Arabic. I have also noticed a variation in the amount of emphasis people put on the letter "h" in Dynaheir.

The number one question, though, is how do you pornounce the "j" in Ajantis?
Do you go
a. Ah-Jan-Tis with the middle syllable pronounced as it is in "January"
or
b. Ah-Yan-tis with the middle syllable sounding more like the football club from Amsterdam?

A Blade's journey

I've just started a solo run with a Blade, I rolled very little and got stats that are highly roleplayed in my character, who's Lawful Neutral, I named her Xzirvanya. image I picked Long Sword and Darts as level one proficiencies. image
-Candlekeep:
I talked to Gorion who urged me to leave the citadel of Candlekeep, where I lived most of my life, I brought an armor, a sword and darts for myself. Later I visited the guards and done a little errand for one of them, just buying quarrels from Winthrop and carrying them through the half of the citadel, very exciting, but I was glad to help (and he rewarded me nicely)! A man tried to kill me, I don't know his name, but he was almost as tall as me and had a dagger, by forcing my spirit into battle and empowering myself (used Offensive Spin) I could concentrate and hit him once (3 damage done with my Long Sword), he threatened me by saying "I've got a blade with your name on it", as the time he stabbed me with his dagger (just 1 point of damage luckily), I ran outside of the construction, but he followed me, I concentrated to not to run and to use my will to protect myself (used Defensive Spin), he couldn't hit me. But I could do so, as he was dead, Karan approached and talked to me, he also urged me to leave, maybe Gorion knows about this, I will ask him later. I have spoken with my friend Imoen, she asked me if she could come with me, but I think that it's a decision that is up to Gorion, and that I will ask me about that too. Gorion decided to leave immediately, he ordered me to go to the Friendly Arm Inn in case that he dies or we are separated, there I can meet with some friends of him, they can help me, he said. A Priest of Oghma from the local temple healed the wounds the assassin had caused me before we leaved, a thing we did.

What was your first time playing Baldur's Gate like?

Did you start from BG1 or was SoA or ToB your first exposure to the bhaalspawn saga? What class did you play? Who was in your first party? What do you remember about your initial impressions? Were you a D&D noob, or did you come from other forgotten realm computer games and/or PnP?

My first experience with the game was when I was in 7th grade shortly after Shadows of Amn was released in 2001. My friend's older brother blew through the game as he had played the first game and was eager for the second. My friend and I sat in the closet that his family computer was kept in and spent hours creating characters, playing through Irenicus' dungeon, and exploring Amn. I remember the quest arc through the slums district blowing me away the most. I was pretty much instantly sold and bought it at Wal-Mart for myself shortly after. I had had no prior experience with D&D and very little experience with computer games. In fact I think it was the first one I ever bought for myself.

My first character was a fighter/mage/thief because I had no idea what was powerful and figured that 3 classes is better than one. I absolutely loved pick pocketing everyone so most of my thief skills went to that. I didn't have any mind for tactics so all of my mage spells went to strait up damage spells, and most of the time I just ended up meleeing everything anyway. My first party was the first 5 good/neutral people I ran into so: Minsc, Jaheria, Arie, Anoman and Yoshimo. I remember getting pissed in Spellhold when Yoshimo betrayed me and getting Imoen back, severely underleveled. I ditched her as soon as possible and picked up Jan, who was still underleveled but a hilarious character to have around where as Imoen just seemed whiny. I didn't really get into the game play and mechanics until my second and third playthough, but I found the story and fights so engrossing and epic that it kept me going. I learned about cheat codes not far into my first playthough, (editing the .ini file made me feel kind of like a hacker) so I abused the hell out of them. I ctrl+J'd around all of the maps and spammed ctrl+R on my party though most fights (and still was not able to kill any of the dragons). Despite all of this noobishness I rushed home from school every day to play and have come back to the game and played BG1 - ToB+Ascension at least 6 times since then. I hope I never get tired of this series.

My friend and I found Suldanessellar hilarious because we pronounced it "Sold-in-a-cellar," and to this day we are still able to recite the opening lines of the torture scene and shadow thieves invasion in the beginning. " 'MORE. INTRUDERS. HAVE ENTERED. THE COMPLEX. MASTER.' 'They ACT sooner than we had anticipated...No matter, they will only prove a slight delay...' "

Also the manual for this game was amazing. I still read over it occasionally, mostly for nostalgia's sake.

Scoring an early Web without attacking Borda!!

Getting Web before Nashkel Mines has always been a problem for me and my good parties. The only script offered in the Borda encounter which leads to battle does not roleplay with Good alignment without a lot of invented backstory.

So I have always made do without until Web is available later in the game. But this most recent play-through I found one in the Fisherman's Village map.

Not sure whether it was a random good luck thing or whether it is always 'nestled' there.

The effect of death on romance and other character interactions

Does death and resurrection of a party member have any effect on dialogues, character interactions, or romances? I remember this being an issue long ago, but I assumed it was fixed. But Jan is completely silent now :(. Before his death and revival I couldn't get him to shut up.

Bounty Hunter or Swashbuckler?

I've played a lot with a stalker Charname, which may remain my favorite, however, I'm considering playing an even more rogue-ee character through the saga. I left off assassin b/c my personality is somewhat chaotic good, and an assassin just seems evil to me, or at least neutral. I'm not interested in playing a fighter/thief, as I prefer single classed characters. Which one of these 2 is more fun for you?

These memories related to Baldur's Gate and/or real life which you think will sound very familiar to many of us..

I will start:

Quicksaving+autosaving over my brothers' 4 hour run and getting the crap beat out of me..

Realizing only after three (painful) playthroughs that the attribute points to divide on CHARNAME are not always the same in total and that you can actually reroll.

Playing through all your youth thinking that Charisma is arguably the most important attribute.

Concluding (too late) that - despite his badass sword - Xan is not a champion in melee.

Which group should I use for my first ever playthrough of Baldur's Gate?

I got BGEE and BG2EE and I intend to play through both. I've never played the Baldur's Gate games before, though I do remember playing one of the Neverwinter Nights games.

I've been trying to balance the intense desire to powergame with the purity of experiencing what is apparently an epic storyline (this is a big part, to my knowledge, of what gives the series consideration as the top RPG, or even game, of all time) unspoiled for the first time. As such, I've attempted to look into how to distribute my attributes and how I want to build my party without giving away too much of the story.

What I'm trying to decide is if the "canon" party, or a party consisting of the five members who will carry over to BG2, will give me the best first experience playing through both games. I think the new EE characters carry over as well, but I can leave that for a later playthrough.

I've already determined that my character will be a Chaotic Neutral Elven Fighter/Mage. I like the bonus to longbows and longswords, and however bland they may be as far as weapons go, that's just what I want to be and do. It only makes sense to also have some magical prowess as an Elf raised by a powerful mage. Or use that as an excuse to powergame.

So, the question becomes, do I use the "canon" party - Dynaheir, Imoen, Jaheira, Khalid, and Minsc - or the "continuation" party - Edwin, Imoen, Jaheira, Minsc, and Viconia - to get the most out of this playthrough.

On paper, I obviously like the continuation party better; the canon party seems better suited to a playthrough as a fighter/cleric, ranger/cleric, or cleric/mage (it just doesn't have a ****ing cleric, wth?). I probably wouldn't bother to dual class Imoen to mage with the canon setup, since I spoiled myself in regards to the Robes of the Magi, and there aren't enough to go around. I'd put Khalid's points into axes because I've already got dibs on the best longswords, and while I will happily do this for my own character, I don't feel like micromanaging his inventory every time I want to swap between ranged and melee. As it stands, I've played up to Beregost thus far, and Khalid's shield went to Jaheira since she can wear it while using her sling (I presume he will be able to do the same with throwing axes).

The continuation party seems way more balanced, and powerful. I could also dual Imoen to a mage and still distribute Robes of the Magi to all who need them. I'm kind of concerned that loopholing Dynaheir and Khalid out of the party will be too storybreaking. Though I have to admit, I hate Khalid's cowardly dialogue, and I would find it enjoyable to make him walk naked into a bear, or just tuck him in for a dirtnap my damned self. What would be really storybreaking is if Edwin and Minsc fought to the death, since they both appear in the second game. Maxing str, dex, con, and int doesn't leave me room for more than 13 cha if I don't want to leave autoroller on all night, which feels too cheesy anyway. I'm happy enough to spend a few minutes on a 92, and minmaxing point distribution is about as cheesy as I want to get.

I must have your opinions. What say ye?

Belt of Antipode should have been cursed and other shennanigans

$

It is really silly that they made an item that annuls an entire enemy (Winter Wolf). It should at least have been cursed (since Remove Curse is an expansive luxury in early BG) and its handicap is a highly risky endeavor (just have many time have you encountered a Winter Wolf along with a Fire Elemental or a Fireball slinging mage.)

This is about as bad as the Shield of Cheese (which I remove by the SCS option from the game).

It really shouldn't be too difficult to balance some of these items with clever handicaps:
- Shield of Cheese : every time it block a ray you take a random -2 STAT damage for one day
- Staff of Magi : remove invisibility (already in SCS) OR use up random memorized spell for every use

And for cursed items:
- Brage's +3 Cursed Sword : make berserk a 10% per hit chance AND/OR random +1 STAT increase for one day for every killed enemy

etc.
