Companions & Cooties: Gender composition of your parties!

ANOTHER SCARY_WIZARD PRODUCTION!

So back in the Meme Thread 2nd Edition (give it time, I'll screw that one up with things I haven't playtested) (mine is the BECMI of Meme threads, it is therefore perfect in my eyes) we (meaning like a grand total of under umpteen members and maybe one moderator) got to talking about gender ratios in our Infinity Engine adventuring parties. Then I got the brilliant idea to make a thread about it!

THIS IS THE THREAD

So, Infinity Engine gamers, do you tend to prefer equal gender balance in your groups and take efforts to enforce this? Do you not allow any cooties into your groups? Or do you not care?
This will REALLY show in games like Icewind Dale, where you control the composition of your party!
also vote and discuss this fee-nummy-numm (that is, phenomenon) to your heart's content, but please keep the discussions civil. Anything above a remark about "cooties" or roleplayed behaviours is going to get a Dwayne Johnson eyebrow from me. Seriously.
DWAYNE JOHNSON EYEBROW
That aside, if you post here, feel free to add a FUN FUN FUUUN RATIONALE to your party's composition!

Myself, I usually find myself playing in groups where there are four to five members of one gender, and one or two of the opposite gender. Not counting familiars or Boo or Keto's Harp and Bottle. Or, in some cases, I'll end up with a party that's all one gender.

In my current (Dragon Disciple) playthrough, I have...
-Gorion's Ward (F). See, an elf and human loved each other very much and had a daughter, and uhh plot happened to their daughter, and...
-Branwen (F). It was either take Branwen along or don't take a healer along at all~
-Neera (F). "You're in trouble, I'm in trouble! Let's be friends!" So it's pretty much one Wild Mage who...didn't get her talent from study but from being Wheatley, and someone whose ancestor banged a brass dragon.
-Garrick (M). He's along because Gorion's Ward felt bad about killing Silke, and because she uhh found a letter of recommendation on Silke's body!
-Safana (F). Safana was pretty hot for Garrick and Rasaad, but since Rasaad went away she's now really only been following the group because weeeeellll they helped her get some good stuff in the past so why not stay with them. I mean Garrick's pretty awkward, and he totally acts confused when Safana asks for footrubs. :/
-Faldorn (F). Faldorn knows how to make Aloe Vera Balm, which is really good for burns. So Gorion's Ward was like, "yeah you can come with us".
Item Transfer on NPCs from BG2 to ToB

If I leave the gear on the NPC's, do they carry on to ToB or do I have to collect them first of them.

What's the news on Baldur's Gate 3?

Can YOU Brave the Sword Coast? - Real-Life Ability Scores! CHALLENGE MODE!

So guys there was this thing I found a while back (I think this guy that I was friends with gave it to me?) that is like a quiz. Except it doesn't tell you who your Final Fantasy or The Lord of the Rings hubby is, it tells you what your ability scores would be in real life.

http://www.angelfire.com/dragon/terragf/back/xstattest.html

Because having a script quantify your attributes makes total sense! I'll admit, the Strength questions are ********, but it's fun. :3

HERE IS MINE
Strength 8, Intelligence 13, Wisdom 11, Dexterity 16, Constitution 15, Charisma 15

I'm a 78-Point Character!

All the alignment tests I've seen are pretty "eh", so I'll spare you all. I tend to vary between Chaotic Good and Neutral Good, though, so I'll go with Neutral Good, Chaotic tendencies.

THAT SAID. I guess take this test and make a character based on the results and run them through the Baldur's Gate computer vidya gehm series! I'm going to!

Assassin/Fighter questions. Poison Weapon and APR.

I'm thinking of starting one of those guys pretty soon.

Being recently convinced of the effectiveness of Poison Weapon ability I'm thinking of starting an assassin that focuses on ranged weapons instead of backstabbing. He/she will be backstabbing for sure, but what I have in mind is maximizing APR for PW with ranged weapons. I'll play through SoA and ToB with this PC.

1. I need advice on best weapon to achieve grandmastery in. I'm thinking short bows because of Tuigan and Geshen. Would that be best or perhabs using my points elsewhere and throwing daggers?

2. Also, Dualing at lvl 13 for x5 backstabs enables me to reach GM in SoA?

3. Now this is a question I wanted to ask for a long time. The proficiencies I choose with my first class, stay for the second? i.e. if i get 1 point into short bows with my assassin and then dual to fighter. When I get my assassin powers back, do I get my proficiency point back? does it stack with any points I might have put into short bows while leveling my fighter?

4. Does starting in SoA hurts me too much? starting with 18 str instead of 19 (that I would get from a tome in BG1) kinda puts me off. Same for dexterity.

Thx for the attention.

If BG were a game of DnD...

How do you think it would be different? A few things come to mind, for one thing one moment Aerie is sobbing about her lost limbs, the next moment hey, you just found a scroll of flight. All problems solved forever.

For another thing I was just in that area where you need to put a beholder eye in a pot of red liquid then activate a machine. This is easy to figure out because the beholder dies there and you have an eye and hey, its those circle arrow thingies that mean do stuff.

Imagine trying to figure this out in a normal DnD game.

I imagine my players will have tried to tunnel out eventually.

another problem is doors that require locks. I imagine it would go like this.

DM:You fail to open the lock.
Thief:What?! I invested all my thief skills into open locks! I TOOK A POTION OF MASTER THIEVERY! I have enchantments up the wazoo to increase my lock opening skills and its still stuck?!
DM:...Er...Yes.
Thief:...How long would it take us to break the door down?
DM:Er. The door is solid metal-
Thief:You said it was wood.
DM:Fine! Wood! But its going take far too long to break down.
Thief:Bullshit. Wizard? Get your fireballs ready.
DM:Its enchanted against magic!
Thief:Luckaly we have a barbarian.
DM:It will take several days to chop through!
Thief:Well, we're waiting then.
DM:...Just go get the sewer golem activation stone already!

Managing spell casters

Plaid threw the game with an archer. Wow that was harsh. I felt mighty. I imported to bg2 and found my archer not so powerful.

Now I'm back in bg1 ( bg1 ee on steam ) I've made a party of spell casters. I keep running into the same 2 problems.

1) I'm a man of the mind I'm not playing darts! I pause. cast my spells, then un pause. Some in my party are faster than others at casting the same spell... the one who's first out the gate then wants to take em all on bare handed and starts closing there distance to give evil a good smack to the head. Is there no " hold your ground option? "

2) Someone has cast a spell on me and I cant remember who these people are I'm with. Might as well try and kill them... After failing to dispel me, Dynaheir is quick on her draw and gives me a dose of her wand of paralyzation. This happens allot... now my party want to attack me because I'm the closest hostile... I have to walk them away from me before they will not target me. I think this is a bug. My non affected party cant even throw a magic missile if there standing too close to me. They keep getting distracted with my poor mind altered paralyzed self. I never had this problem with my archer party.

Pause, Dynaheir! cast magic missile on evil dude over there! the one that is trying to kill us. The spell icon comes up. Unpause, but then she steps toward poor mind altered Rova and starts throwing punches. Driving me nuts! is there a fix to this? Never attack part member unless I say so button I don't know about?

I also wish there was a training room where you could duel with your party members to work out how spells work instead of testing them out in combat. i.e. I didn't know color spray affected everyone. you only have the rear party member cast that spell once! also I get my math wrong all the time. Minsc seems to be better with two one handed than one two handed. If I need 5 damage to kill someone, hitting them from 5 or hitting them for 20 means nothing, he's dead Jim.

The Tale of the Totemic Druid

Inspired by this tread and thanks to @bbear here I’m going to tell a story about Karasu no Yoru, a totemic druid raised in the Candlekeep and destined to become a major figure in the history of the Sword Coast.

The name of the character is in Japanese and means his name actually is Yoru (night) and he comes from the Karasu (crow) clan known for shamans and spirits.

Here's the character sheet at the start of the game.

The main incentive is to find out what it takes to successfully solo the whole game (from the start of BG:EE to the end of BG2:EE) with the totemic druid. There’s a discussion about which class is the hardest for a solo run in that thread and it seems many people vote for a druid. So I’ve decided to test it and will gladly write about it for those who are interested in the concept.

I’m playing on the Core difficulty and here’s my weiDU log:

I consider myself an experienced player, had different playthroughs in the past but have never tried the totemic druid. This kit seems interesting to me because it shows the true, from my point of view, nature of a druid – a summoner. In the past I played as an Avenger and liked it much but the Avenger feels more like a druid/mage, while a Shapeshifter obviously feels more like a fighter/druid. A vanilla druid is fine as well but I just like using a kit and not a vanilla version (if it’s not a dual- or multi-class). So, the totemic druid it is.

I understand the problems that can arise because of the SCS but I hope that my knowledge of the game will help to overcome these difficulties. I seriously think that with some meta-gaming even the power of SCS can be not so dangerous. I think than so bad (yeah) thing as the meta-gaming needs serious countermeasures such as not OP class, not min-maxed stats, smarter AI and so on.

As a rule, I try to role-play my character and his party as much as I can but this time it will be different. And I’m so excited – it’s a challenge, and a good one. I’ll try to play a no-reload run with an option for minimal reloads if the character will be killed but I will feel myself attached to it. Also, your reactions, ideas and just a general discussion is much appreciated ;)))

What's your best stats roll?

I just started vanilla BG2, and wanted to make a character. I tend to play with the first 80+ roll for my PC. But this one I got upon the very first roll (after stats re-assignment).

STR 18/99
DEX 17
CON 19
INT 14
WIS 10
CHA14

Total 92 with a 18/99. Jesus.

SPOILERS: Anomen quest triggering in Underdark

Hey guys. The part of Anomen's quest when a messenger comes to inform him that
his father has been killed
is triggering while I'm in the Underdark, in the Illithid lair. Well, sort of. He says "Wait, one approaches..." etc., but (unsurprising considering our location) the messenger doesn't appear. Is this going to break the rest of his quest? And is there a way to fix it? I would prefer a solution involving eekeeper, but not the CLUA console if possible, because once I enable that I have a very hard time resisting the temptation to use the cheat keys. :P

Priest of Lathander

How do you guys think this kit compares to a fighter/cleric dual or multi? I know those options will probably be more powerful in the long run but I feel like the kit might actually not be that far behind.

Am I right to think the Boon spell stacks so its possible to get 4 apr with a one hander or 5 with a dual? Basically lathander priest can buff up to 25 strength, catch an improved haste and get 10 apr. Is that right?

NonSequitur Black Pits II - Recruiting Phase

I have some really bad cases of restarteritis in both BG2EE and Black Pits II and to get over it, I decided to start a new non sequitur Black Pits "documentary". By now, I know how to recruit all NPC gladiators, but still haven't found a use for all quest items, so this should be interesting. It won't be a "walkthrough" or "strategy guide", more a documentary of the fights, merchants, quests, NPCs and general advise.

It's been a while since the last non sequitur run and I don't know if the old party is still alive/around. That means time for some fresh faces - aka a recruitment call.

The wise and just paladin (inquisitor, tank) Ser Eyewin Lannister will lead the brave gladiators of Thay and hopefully find the following comrades:

♦ a berzerker/cleric taken or cleric/ranger, dual wielding damage dealer
♦ a vanilla sorcerer, primary caster
♦ an assassin/mage, secondary caster and mage disabler
♦ a druid (avenger or totemic preferred), primary divine caster, utility

and either:

♦ a bard (jester or doomsinger preferred), ranged/secondary caster taken
a monk, kitted or vanilla both welcome (Note: I've never played monks, it's just something I considered trying out for a while. I don't really know how to play them though.)

○ Duals are created as the first class and are to be dualed during the first tier, for convenience.

○ Sprites can be anything except large circle creatures (no giants, dragons; they don't fit in the small resting area). Walking speed is no concern.

○ Provide your class, race/sprite, alignment, preferred weapons (anything goes; Ser Eyewin uses Long Sword + Shield, but there are enough to go around for double profs), portrait if you have one.

○ Stats will be somewhat min/maxed, but I'm not patient enough to roll for an hour, so it depends a bit on luck. I try to go for high 80ies or higher rolls for everyone, if really neccssary or not.

○ Illegal race/class is not completely out of the question, but I prefer minor tweaks only. (No non-human duals, but if you want to have a gnome bard, I'm not stopping you.)

○ Active forum poster; it's appreciated if the "players" add some advise for their characters/classes in the topic, because I'm scatterbrained and will forget a lot. :)

Please send me a message with your character suggestion, so this topic will be only actual Black Pits documentation; I'll make a party introduction posting and update it with the final team/character sheet screenshots.

Boo's NPC Polls Part 4: Who's do you think is the Perfect Paladin? (or paladin-like character?)

Ok... totally cheating here. I count Mazzy as a semi-Paladin due to her personality and abilities, and Anomen can join the Order and Fighter/Clerics share some traits with paladins...
okay, I cheated, so sue me! If you disagree then simply don't vote for those options

As always, please vote and maybe share your reasoning, as I am eager to hear :)

Seems a lot harder to find good male portraits...

Big diggin' around, looking for alternate portraits for Charname. I've been having such a hard time finding quality male portraits, that more or less blend in with the game portraits, that I either end up playing a female or just using one of two male stock portraits in the game. Anyone have any particularly good ones they are willing to share?

Stuck in sendai room

Hi all, i could need some help to deal with the following problem :
After beating sendai, i get sent back to the pocket plane, i get the solar speach and get sent back to sendai room.
However, once there, i cannot leave the room : when i click on one of the exits, nothing happens.
I can go back to the pocket plane to make the challenge, but once this is done, i get no choice, other than getting back to sendai room, where i cannot do anything.

Anybody else has encountered that problem? Is there anything i am missing?
Please note that i play on ipad so console is not possible to solve the issue.

Thanks for your feedback

Your method for distributing stats? (other than min/maxing)

Back when I played the original BG1 more than a decade ago, I used to min/max the most useful stats for my character class. Consequently, I ended up with a lot of paladins with only 3 intelligence. ;-)

With the release of BG:EE, I decided that I wanted to roleplay a character similar to the method described in Tord's famous "Lilly Black" playthrough (see here: Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
image
) - which meant creating a character without absurd-looking and obviously OP'd stats.

I made a few "rules" for myself:
1. My character's stat total would not be higher than the highest stat total out of the NPCs (which meant less than Dorn's 90).
2. I would use the individual stats of the other NPCs as a barometer for deciding my own.
3. My char would have only one fully maxed stat.

Here's the character that I eventually created for my current playthrough, a female human vanilla ranger (it took a helluva long time to decide on a portrait, race, and class, but those are topics for other threads, LOL):

After only a few rolls, I had rolled an 88 stat total - a very respectable roll, but not higher than Dorn's 90, and only equal with Ajantis' stat total.

Here's a basic rundown of how I decided each stat:

Strength - I imagine my character as having above average strength, but not being a hulking amazon. Looking over the strengths of other NPCs (with emphasis on the female ones), the spectrum runs from 8-9 str wimps like Alora and Imoen, to a singularly unique, 18-plus str amazon in Shar-Teel. I felt that my character should basically be smack in the middle, in the range of warrior-priests like Branwen or Jaheira, so I settled on 14. (Incidentally, as a ranger she's required to have at least 13 str anyway.)

Dexterity - I imagine my char as being very fit, and obviously skilled with a bow (as you can see from her picture), but perhaps just a tad less athletic than a master thief like Imoen or a trained dancer like Skie. So 17 dext was appropriate IMO.

Constitution - I imagine my char as being fairly healthy, enough to get a bonus from her con, but at the same time, I was conscious of not raising too many of her stats too high. So I settled on 15.

Intelligence & Wisdom - I basically just replicated Kivan's and Jaheira's stats for these, since I imagine that my ranger would basically share the same outlooks and sensibilities as they do (i.e: being "nature smart" instead of "book smart"). I imagine my character as being respectably smart and sensible, but not necessarily an outstanding genius in either category. As someone who was raised and educated amidst the books of Candlekeep's library, but always with a secret focus on the outside world, I imagine that she's educated just enough to be literate (which would mean at least 9 int.), but her wisdom should be emphasized thereafter.

Charisma - I decided that this would be the stat that I'd fully max, as there are no other NPCs with 18 char (except maybe Keldorn IIRC) and I wanted to give my char a unique trait that would make her stand out from the other NPCs. Besides, I imagine my char as someone who will generally get a favorable reaction from others (just look at her pic after all, LOL), and from a roleplaying perspective, it would best explain how she'd be capable of gathering and keeping together a motley collection of mercenaries.

So there's my story... Anyone else have their own?

Boo's NPC Polls Part 6: Who is the Thickest Thief?

We here at this forum are as thick as thieves! (thanks to @JLee for the term)

Pick your fave (based on whatever you want) and give a brief explanation if you are so inclined.

PS: I really wanted to add Hexxat and Nalia, but the space was limited to 10. I didn't add Hexxat because I felt bad leaving off an original character, but would love to add see her as a "write in candidate". Nalia only has four levels, but would still be a legitimate option.

Sorry guys :( Just too many thieves trying to display their skill and expertise, andthe world will just have to be blind to some of their passing.

edit: I think "write in candidate" section section is Hexxactly what we need
Hexxat: 2 votes
Nalia: 0 votes

Boo's NPC Polls Part 10 (The Final Chapter): Who is the most Magnificent Mage?

The one you have all been waiting for.

You know the rules. Vote and comment as you see fit.

I'm very sorry about the lack of Baeloth. I had to leave someone out, even though I love him and he is very popular. It is unfortunate, but I didn't even have room for the "just show me results" option so I had to leave out the Easter Egg character, despite him being the magnificent masterful maestro of the alluring art of alliteration.

Boo's NPC Polls Part 8: Who's is your Favorite Fighter?

I often find fighters to be a bit boring and one-dimensional, but there are some great ones out there. I'd like to see your options

Of course, please vote and share if you wish to qualify your response.

Note: I included Dorn since it did not feel right to put him in the paladin poll, and Rasaad because this is the only place where he really fits. Also did not include duals or multis since space was limited.
