Dwarves Versus Halflings, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Bilbo
Okay, before I go any further: Halflings are better at thievery altogether, hands-down, no questions asked.
With that said... I saw a kitpack in development a while back where one of the new thief kits was Technician, where the bonus was extra thieving points and the penalty was no backstab. Which is perfect for me as I never actually use stealth (and by extension, backstab) because there are better, more reliable ways of pulling it off for when I do actually need to be sneaky in a low level game like BG. Plus, I fell in love with traps during my F>C game (Imoen never needed spells, her traps were that useful) and decided that I wanted to play around with traps some more.
Ignoring the obvious "Why don't you play a Bounty Hunter then?" question (I will be doing a Bounty Hunter later on in the year), I'm actually going to address the real point of this thread: Halfling Thieves versus Dwarven Thieves. Does the 2 point difference in Dexterity make enough of a difference to negate the dwarf's innate bonus to basically all of the thief skills I actually use?
Again, I'm ignoring the stealth skills - the halfling wins hands down when they're considered. Even though a Dwarf would arguably have better backstab potential since you can reach 19 strength with a dwarf, a halfling can stealth more reliably and really, if you're not backstabbing (Assassin, and arguably Shadowdancer) and you're not teching (Basically every other thief ever), what are you using a thief for?
(The following all reference Play It Hardcore: the Thief entry under Classes and Kits and the Dexterity entry under Races and Stats, and all assume a trueclass thief)
Halflings get an innate +5 pickpocket, +5 open locks, +5 find traps, +10 move silently, and +15 hide in shadows, with no racial bonuses to detect illusion or set traps. +40 in racial bonuses, though only +15 if you don't use stealth.
Dwarves get an innate +10 open locks, +15 find traps, +5 detect illusion, and +10 set traps, with no racial bonuses to pick pockets, hide in shadows, and move silently. Since the dwarf has no innate bonuses to the stealth skills, the dwarf is +40 in racial bonuses regardless of whether you play stealthily or not.
Just by racial bonuses alone, the Halfling favors stealthy play while the Dwarf favors technical play. But the Dwarf's dexterity generates at 17 due to a racial penalty, while the Halfling generates at 19 due to a racial bonus (we can safely ignore the strength part of the equation - the reduction of stealth skill in a dwarf, just from the racial bonus spread, means that the Halfling will always have the higher potential damage in BG1 due to more reliable stealth (and therefore backstabbery) regardless of the 1 point strength difference.
So how much of a difference does dexterity make?
A Dwarf with 17 Dexterity has +20 open locks, +15 find traps, +5 pickpocket, +5 move silently, +5 hide in shadows, +5 detect illusion, and +10 set traps. A starting total bonus of +65, +55 discounting stealth, plus -3 AC and +2 to ranged THAC0.
A Halfling with 17 Dexterity (19 Dexterity values will be in parentheses so that I don't have to write this a third time) has +15(+25) open locks, +5(+15) find traps, +10(+25) pickpocket, +15(+25) move silently, +20(+30) hide in shadows, (and +10 find traps), with no bonus to detect illusion. A starting total bonus of +65(+120), +30(+65) discounting stealth, plus -3(-4) AC and +2(+3) ranged THAC0... unless it's a sling in which case it's +3(+4).
So while the Halfling is still numerically superior once Dexterity comes into play, which one you should use really depends on how you want to use your thief. They're equal in trap finding and trap setting and the dwarf actually has a slight advantage against mages due to 5% in detect illusion that a halfling will always have to spend 5 to match... though the Halfling is superior in basically everything else, (only by 5 in open locks, but significantly in PP and the stealths). Where a dwarf thief would shine (so to speak) is less time wasted between rests as anything with 19 con is healing fully in 8 hours anyway, and 20 con is just overkill even with a warrior class.
And with all that said, I still fully intend to play a dwarf swashbuckler as my next serious BG1 character (since I can't play a technician yet and the potential to get 5/2 APR in shortbows without sacrificing dwarven thievery shenanigans is very appealing)
(If my math or information is wrong, please correct me as I'm slightly tired and slightly braindead as I type this.)

SCS Review - My Playthrough/Experience With SCS
WARNING: Huge wall of text inbound
I just started playing BG2: Shadows of Amn with SCS for the first time, after playing it through 3 times without it...I am really loving it so far, it is a much more difficult challenge...So i was bored and figured i would talk about it here... I am a level 13 Kensai/10 Mage (One of the best classes - i was scared to do a regular class because of what i hear of SCS :D) I have a 4 man party: Jan, Aerie, Keldorn, CHARNAME
All Tactics Section Installed, Spell Tweaks Skipped, AI Enhancements (Smarter Mages/Clerics), etc.
3 Mages/2 Fighter party seems to bode well so far. (although atm i only have 1 fighter until i hit 14 with my CHARNAME)
Challenges so far:
Shadow Dragon (Temple Ruins) - Just beat him, he was relatively easy actually, took a few reloads because of his Shadow Breath kept chunking Jan :D, but in the end it was just "Breach, Secret Word, Lower Resistance, MAGIC MISSLE x1000, Keldorn hitting him.
Firkraag - Still haven't beaten him, i gave up when i first ran in to him, but i was lower level, i plan on taking him on again soon, His HP is ridiculous, and Keldorn could not land very many blows on him at all. I did not have Lower Resistance though...
Twisted Rune - I tried...Oh boy...I don't know how the frick i am supposed to do this...Heh, it was quite easy in vanilla imo, but its a different story this time around...My strategy was: summons distract lich (worked), Keldorn be closest to Beholder with Shield of Balduran so he can absorb him, and my Kensai and mages + Keldorn's True Sight take down the annoying ass mage asap...That part didn't work so well...True sight didn't take away her mirror image...I really am not sure why...She cast double time stops and just competely wrecks my whole party within seconds...Pretty sure if i could kill her quickly, it would be doable, but it was certainly not doable at the level i tried (Same level around when i did Firkraag)
Haer'Dalis's Plane - Whew, this was mostly hard because of two reasons... 1: Lvl 13 Kensai becomes lvl 1 mage...only 1 fighter, and i had to take out the Warden who was a pain the ass, but he went down...And the hardest challenge i had yet was here.....Random Encounter with a "Yuan-Ti" group...OMFG...3 Yuan-ti Mages with Contingency's, Globe of Inv, etc...Then you use breach on 1, and they cast it again...sigh....It took about 500000 Reloads...With the fighters on me, and the mages constantly screwing me over, it became extremely difficult...Eventually i said screw it and had aerie cast 3 cloudkills on em...Got rid of 2 mages, and all but 1 of the fighters..Which was much easier....
Temple District Mind Flayer Lair - Lol, this was quite funny actually, i had aerie cast Sanctuary, then just walk/get the hammer of thunderbolts, then come back, and shut the door...(i didn't think i could take them), then i said: lets go for it! I buff like hell, and open the door, only to see that every single lich/figher/mage/umber hulk in the entire area was clogging the doorway....The mind flayers knew i guess, because they are really smart...however they are incapable of opening doors...soooo....Anyways, after realizing this i super buffed my Kensai and some how tanked all of them, using the doorway to only allow 1-3 creatures on me at once..eventually i ripped through them all, but it took a few reloads...There was on random mage who kept using dispel magic and BS.
Unsee'ing Eye Lich - WTF, lich's are ridiculous now...I tried it at...obviously...a very low level.. but it was very surprising to me how ridiculous he was, he demolished my entire party in seconds...I look forward to fighting it again.
Overall, i love it so far, its fun and engaging and is a completely different experience so it makes it more entertaining...I am hoping life will be MUCH easier as soon as i kill Firkraag and get dat Casomyr :D
Pros:
Much more of a challenge...The monsters are far more difficult, and it makes boss battles far more entertaining.
Cons:
- Random enemy's are almost "too" challenging... Come on, boss monsters should be more challenging then random encounters....But that isn't always the case
- Every random ass thief as 50000 potions of invisibility...it was quite annoying...However it was interesting when i fought Edwin and all of the invisible thief's that surrounded him said "No one crosses the shadow thieves and lives!" all at once, it was actually super creepy and echo'y, it was pretty epic :D
I plan on updating this as i play on :D
Anyways, what do you think of the challenges i faced? Were they similar to the difficulty you had with them? Or were completely different battles much more challenging then the ones i mentioned...I am scared of whats to come :D

Under Review: Nalia
For some unknown reason, my thread committed to discussing Dynaheir recently had a revival, and this was always a character review thread I had wanted to make, as it saves everybody else from seeing me go off on one in the middle of an entirely unrelated thread!
Of the original NPCs, I was quite surprised to find that with the exception of the polarising romance options introduced in the second game (Aerie & Anomen), Nalia as a character seemed to take the brunt of community criticism.
This thread is dedicated to discussing her character, and putting a statistic to the public opinion of Nalia.
Personally, I really liked Nalia, who I thought existed as an NPC in her own right, despite accusations levied against her that she was merely an intermission Imoen before Imoen could be collected. Imoen was originally supposed to die during the events of BG2, however, which suggests that the actual writers had intended for Nalia to be the dual-class Mage centre stage among the optional NPCs. Her personality is a nuanced product of her upbringing that does not always lead with its best foot forward, sometimes compromising the charisma of her character, yet her personality is not inevitably bound up in the story of the protagonist, while Imoen fills the role of an understudy pushing the agenda of the story with little integrity as a personality (at least in BG2). That said, I don't dislike Imoen, I merely refute claims that Nalia is a belittled version in both her build and her personality.
But what do you think?
PS: The options proposed on the poll refer exclusively to the 'canon' content of the game, and does not take account of any Mods or additional writing created for Nalia in the EEs. If these are a factor in your decision, feel free to elaborate this in the comments.

Using EE Keeper to use your favorite BG1EE NPC Party in BG2EE
Just curious if anyone besides me did this?
I used EE Keeper to export two my favorite party members from the final save of BG1EE and imported them into BG2EE. Xzar and Montaron. I know the're in BG2EE already as plot related quest, But I wanted them back beyond that quest, So I waited until I finished the Harper Quest/Jaheira Romance before i imported them into my party through Multiplayer. Then save game and copy back to single player. I also extract the're voiceset from the first game and into the BG2EE override folder. Even though the BG2 NPC's don't have pyshical dialog with Xzar and Montaron. They do somehow many to piss them off... some manage to get Xzar to call them a Harlot lol

Where are the Devs from
I bought the game from steam, but I've been thinking about getting another copy - that I can play unmodded with for some friends - I've been across it before, but could anyone point me to website that they used/are from, or what not.
Figured I could get an extra copy that I don't have to mess with and can support the people that have done a lot of the mods and the EE versions. Thanks!

There's a lot of clicking to do before you can play
So, first I click on the icon. Then I click "Launch" in the launcher. Then I have to click "Shadows of Amn". Then I have to click to bypass the cinematic. Then I have to click "Continue" on the "new adventures" page. Then I have to click "single player". Then I have to click "Load game" (incidentally on the other side of the screen as well). Then finally I can click "load" and start playing.
Surely there could be a way of going directly into "Load Game"? Or perhaps even a button with "Continue playing" that loads the latest save game.
I've nitpicked about this before, but it's even worse now in BG2EE! Brilliant game otherwise of course :)

Immunity: Divination + Invisibility = HOW?
Basically the title....What do i do when a mage has contingency like that: Divination, Invisibility, stoneskin, etc...
How do i dispel that invisibility...I have a cleric/mage and an inquisitor that have dispelling of invisbility type effects, but is there any non-divination way to dispel invisibility?
EDIT: Just found out dispel magic is not Divination :D
Is there anything else?

iPad or PC?
It's been a long time since i last played either BG1 or BG2. I'm giving serious thought to picking up these new EE versions and playing it all over again, but I'm not sure what device to do so on. I assume there's no modding sport for the iPad versions (I loved the idea of Baldur's Gate Complete and a few other mods) and I haven't seen any advice on how to import your character over from the first game into the second on the iPad either so I wonder if that's also not doable. On the other hand the convenience of having the game on a tablet can't be understated and since the price basically he same once you pick up the extra characters it's a tough call.
I wonder what people who have played the games think? Are the controls on the iPad any good? Will I be happier in the long term if I buy the PC version? Or should I wait until he games come up in the steam sale at half price and buy them on both platforms? ;-)

Questions regarding the SCS version of the final battle(SPOILERS!)
So here I am with my illusionist pc and the canon party, we are all XP capped having cleared everything and wielding +3 weapons
I cheesed my way through tazok and the likes of him with cloudkill
My party is hasted, blessed and under the effects of Potion of Storm Giant strength and i'm tanking him for quite some time with fireshield on,also he stepped on the maximum number of traps and I have used the level 5 summon monster spell for the maximum amount of summons allowed(the summons are also hasted)
I swear he's life never drops below barely injured(though he isn't damaging me too hard) no matter what I do he regenerates too fast,my spell run off and he eventually starts killing my party slowly, but the guy is invurneable so speed is not much of an issue
is this normal? or is the canon part lacking in damage? I cannot think of any other way to deal more damage to him...
pff,i once thought I was good in this game when I was completing everything on insane without cheese, guess I'll have to reconsider!

I try to do Neera's quest, but there is no secret camp on the map. I had told Neera to meet me there in the bridge district sequence, but when I arrived there, she wouldn't join. I could talk to her, but she just said banter lines, so I ctrl-q'd her into the party, which is probably the problem. How do I trigger her quest or whatever? She reacted to the gnome by the cart and the snake, but nothing else.

1) I've heard BP is harder than the core game. Does the above party have a fighting chance given their non-min/max'd stats? I intend to play on Core Rules.
2) Can you import a BP 1 party into BP 2? Is that 'intended'?
3) Is there much of a plot to BP 1 and 2? Like enough to bother with roleplaying it? Are they linked? Does it make sense?
4) How is it possible to justify the ridiculous speed of level-ups in BP from a RP perspective?
Edit: Updated and added some new questions.

^^ Still under theory-crafting, her Int and Wis can be re-allocated to satisfy class requirements as needed. If you got ideas on the character, I've asked for suggestions here:

Assassin poison damage
Does the damage done by the assassin's poison ability increase at higher levels? If so, at which levels do the increases occur?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Weapon Proficiencies and APR questions.
So the biggest mistake I probably made in my first blind playthrough was my F/M weapon proficiencies. Since I didn't know what weapons I'd find, I ended up training in stuff after coming across a weapon. I also probably underestimated APR and never used Improved Haste until the very end. That's something I want to avoid for my next Kensai=>Mage Charname.
So I'd like to confirm that my understanding of weapon proficiency, dual-classing and APR is correct, so that I can better plan out my itemisation strategy.
1) Kensai starts with 4 pips. By the end of BG 1 he should be lv 7 or 8, have 3/2 base APR and gained 2 more pips to assign, which can break the ++ barrier of F/M MC.
2) Beginning the Dual-classing at the very beginning of BG 2 (what does a Kensai lose exactly during the Dual-classing process? Just Kai?)... he will gain another + at Mage lv6, and then further +'s at lv 12, 18 and 24. So in total, assuming he gets about 6M xp in total, he will end the game with 10 pips to spend.
3) He never gains more than 3/2 APR base, but with a ++ or better weapon proficiency, he gets another 1/2 APR. (Is it just me or are weapon mastery bonuses pretty tame? I mean +++ to ++++ is just 1 extra damage and speed factor?!) Do u get 1 more APR at +++++? I've seen some conflicting info on this...
4) Belm is good because it essentially provides +1 APR to mainhand weapon, as well as 1 APR with offhand. So with +++++, Charname should have:
3/2+1/2+1+1=4 attacks with mainhand, assuming the Grandmastery +1 APR is accurate and 1APR with offhand Belm. If he uses Improved Haste, that works as 8 APR with mainhand, 2 with offhand? (What happens if u use GWW? Is it just 10 APR with mainhand?)
5) On a related note, why is Kundane so popular? -2 THAC0 and Speed factor really THAT good? It is a +2 weapon, so if u use Kundane and Belm, u can't even hit a lot of enemies in BG 2...
Thanks in advance! :)

Help me theory-craft this character!
I asked this question, or something like it, on the Chinese forum... but there's no one active in there at the moment so I'll throw it out to everybody!
What class(s) would best represent the popular Wuxia character, Xiaolongnü (literally: Little Dragon Girl).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xiaolongnü
Obviously Wuxia and Western fantasy are not quite the same, so some imagination and interpretation is going to be needed.
In summary:
She is a skilled martial artist (which in Wuxia, means some advanced techniques look essentially like magic) who wields a longsword, wears no armour, though she uses long strands from her robes almost like whips or magical binds to strike/disarm/trap enemies. She has gloves that are impenetrable and allows her to grab enemy weapons by the sharp end without fear of injury.
She plays 'guqin', an ancient musical instrument, and can use the music to control a swarm of magical bees to attack her enemies at will. She uses darts (needles) tipped poison from the bees and also has a good knowledge of antidotes to a range of poisons.
My current ideas:
1) Dragon Disciple was the first obvious thought. But that's primarily just playing on her name. She has no association with dragons or exhibit skills like breathing fire. I am tempted to make her a half-elf, because although she is technically human (there are no elves/dwarves in that Wuxia setting), she is portrayed in an almost ageless manner.
2) Druid: the way she uses her robes can kinda be replicated by Entangle, and of course the bees are ideal for Insect Plague, in addition she can heal and counter poisons, which is kinda reflective of her original fictional skills. However, druids cannot use longswords or darts, which is a bit of a shame.
3) Blade/Bard: to play on her guqin skills, and allow her to wield swords, throw darts etc... downside of course is no druid spells.
Edit: A video demonstration of her typical fighting style. Comes to think of it, she isn't depicted using swords very often...
[spoiler]

This is the opening scene where the character makes her appearance in a popular TV series based on "Return of the Condor Heroes", and it depicts her arrival at the Daoist Temple, to find that her elder mentor and companion of the Tomb Sect is dying due to wounds sustained whilst defending a boy who had run away due to bullying. After 'Granny Sun' dies, she demands that the priest who (accidentally) fatally wounded the elderly woman to commit suicide to atone for his crime. When he refuses she attacks him in the heart of the Daoist temple.
