Assassin + darts

It would seem that darts would be the best weapon for an assassin to use with the 'poison' ability, given the 3 APR. Or am I missing something?

Just completed this EPIC game for the first time!! (Most Memorable Moments) SPOILERS

After over 240 hours of gaming over the course of the last 6 months, Sima Jin (Charname) stands victorious as Melissan joins Karoug, Aec'Letec, Sarevok, Bhodi, Irenicus, The Five and many others upon the list of the vanquished!

Player Emotion:

Most Memorable Moments: (Chronological Order)

1) First time I used Lightning... Pretty much never touched Lightning based spells again because: http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/comment/452390

2) First time I used Fireball... I one-shot the party again. BUT... I was so impressed with the destructive potential of Fireball that I quickly tried to pack Dynaheir's spellbook with as many as I could. I don't think I used Minute Meteors until BG 2.

3) The "I WAS FRAMED!" moment following the death of the Iron Throne leadership. My law abiding Charname allowed himself to be taken in by the Flaming Fists. Following a brief spat with Angelo, he has Imoen executed. "WTF?!"

4) Karoug the cheesy Greater Wolfwere. Crazy regeneration, I didn't have a single silver weapon on me, and had yet to learn of the wonder that is Melf's Minute Meteors. This is the only encounter in the whole saga that forced me to check the internet for specific answers.

5) Aec'Letec: my favourite battle of BG 1. It was challenging for sure, but oh so epic! Especially the first time I killed him, and was about to celebrate, and then ... "oh crap..."

6) Beginning of SoA. "Dynaheir?! NOOOO!!!"... a few minutes later... "Khalid!?! NOOOO!!!"... a bit after that... "Imoen?!!? NOOOOO!!!". Charname was so shaken he turned from Lawful Good to Lawful Neutral.

7) Yoshimo's betrayal. I was caught totally unprepared. Yoshimo carried all the equipment I planned for Imoen. I swore revenge, and was SO pleased when it was achieved.

8) The Battle of Spellhold. Forget Irenicus, who is his jailer mage?! The bastard killed/petrified Jaheira, Aerie, Imoen and Minsc before Jin and Anomen took him down. This meant that I had to face Irenicus with only 2 battered party members still standing... and an army of psychos behind their backs. It was a miracle that didn't end up being a reload and is probably my most memorable battle of the entire saga, mostly because I totally did not expect to pull it off...

9) First encounter with a dragon. "OMG it's HUGE!"... Thankfully it was Adalon.

10) Aerie turned into a vampire! Another "NOOOOO!!!" moment. Tried desperately to Dispel, and avoid having to kill her. Then found the books that offered hope, and reluctantly had Jaheira carry out the act. Was SO relieved to find her body and SO relieved to have her restored.

11) First Demilich encounter. Stumbled into the one in Watcher's Keep, next to the Githyanki camp. Couldn't work out how to hurt it, and by the time Jin used Slayer form to bring it down, Aerie, Imoen, Minsc and Jaheira had been Imprisoned. I had no idea where to find Freedom Scrolls, and would spend the next few sessions trying desperately to find one in Watcher's Keep with a 'B team of Keldorn, Mazzy, Nalia and Valygar'. Eventually, with Keldorn also Imprisoned by Azamantes, I had to give up my 'blind playthrough' principles for the first time and ask for help.

12) Killing Demogorgon. Ok, it didn't technically happen, cos I chose to trap Demogorgon and the treacherous Vigil Knights in the Vault, but I decided to take on Demogorgon for fun. Pulling it off on the third attempt was a great feeling. "I beat Demogorgon, I must be good!" lol

13) Losing Anomen. Not always my favourite companion, but he sure was the strongest. I was starting to wonder if chunking/permanent death didn't happen in BG 2... and then poor Ano got hit by a ranged attack from Abazigal for 125(?!!) damage. Instantly turning him into a charred corpse beyond any healing or resurrection spells. That was a shocking moment for sure, and so close to the end, a sad end for a character who had come so far.

14) Melissan. WHAT. A. BATTLE.

[spoiler]
Hmmm… this is already a wall of text, I might as well build it taller!

She sure doesn't give a shit about playing fair! On my first attempt, I stumbled in totally unprepared (I expected to have to battle through some minions before actually facing her in battle.) I confidently threw 4 spellbooks (Jin, Aerie, Imoen and Jaheira) at her in what I thought would be a devastating barrage of magical power. She laughed off Timestop, and somehow survived 4 or 5 Horrid Wiltings and Dragon's Breath. Swords eventually completed the job, but before I could celebrate, I realised to my dismay that this was only the first of 4 battles against Melissan, plus 3 groups of other guardians, AND there was no chance to rest. Having used most of the party's firepower already, they were overwhelmed in the second encounter against Melissan.

Second attempt.

This time, I was well prepared. All the subtle utility spells went out of the spellbooks, and I packed as much firepower and magic penetration as I could, and prepared all the useful scrolls, ammo, potions etc that I've hoarded for the entire game until now.

Stage 1:
Because I tried to conserve spells/resources the first encounter ended up being even more tricky than in the first attempt. Minsc got petrified and somebody else needed to be raised with Rod of Resurrection, but I got past it without using many spells.

Air Elementals:
Handled fairly easily by a stream of Earth Elemental summons from a Staff of Earth that I saved up until now, though Jaheira got level-drained, which cost me an Insect Plague and Deva.

Stage 2:
Once more saving resources meant it took longer than I’d have liked, and Rod of Resurrection was needed for one or two again.

Ice Elementals: chewed through my Earth Elementals like paper, so the party had to get stuck in themselves, resulting in many injuries, but I had plenty of Health Potions, so it wasn’t too bad.

Stage 3:
Melissan unloads all her cheese. She opens with a random attack that knocked my entire party unconscious (nothing I could do about positiong, of course), and disrupting all the spells I was about to throw at her. Then before the party recovered, she Timestopped. T_T

Having just about survived that opening onslaught, she teleports behind the big beam of Bhaalspawn essence (wasting more of my spells and making it hard to see what she’s doing) and then starts to summon an endless stream of Balors and Marileth Demons(!!?!!!?) Each time I take one down, another one is summoned immediately. She repeatedly restores her protections, heals herself at least once and mercilessly strips the party of buffs/protections.

Realising that it was hopeless to try to kill the tide of demons, and having already exhausted way more resources than I planned, including my best summons, I decided to ignore the demons and threw the party forwards to try to take Melissan down in combat. This is when Jaheira was hit with a vorpal weapon. I am not sure if it was Melissan or one of her demons. But after almost 240 hours in my company, from 0 xp to over 5M xp… Jaheira was gone! Permanently. T_T

What followed was a bit of a blur, and I was pretty demoralised, but I guess my plan worked. Two more companions fell in battle (not permanently), but Melissan retreated once more.

Fallen Solar and Co:
My party, battered and exhausted (literally all fatigued already), and (wo)man down, expected to find a third group of elementals, maybe Fire, or Earth… Seeing nightmarish Marileth Demons and a Fallen Solar, as well as an Alu-Fiend, emerge from the third Bhaal essence source was crippling news. Keldorn’s (replacement for the fallen Anomen) Dispel Magic thankfully could take down Marileth protections and somehow the party survived… well, with the help of Rod of Resurrection, again.

Final Stage:
I expected this to be hardest stage, which is why I had saved all my Simulacrums, Horrid Wilting and Spell Triggers until now. I literally had only 4 summons left (including from equipment), mostly Aerial Servants and Skeleton Warriors, having used Devas and Juggernault Golem to survive the third stage. However, with 2 Imoens, Aeries and Jins ready to face Melissan, all hope was not lost!

The warriors, (Keldorn, Jin and Minsc) drank the last of the Strength Potions and Potions of Heroism that I had left, and with a prayer to Helm, the battle was joined. Melissan finally withered in the face of the full force of the party’s righteous fury, laying into her with The Answerer, Gram the Sword of Grief and Pison’s Blade, whilst a barrage of penetration Spell Triggers and Horrid Wilting rained down on her. In the end, the final stage was easier than I expected, but I am certainly not complaining! The whole battle took 2-3 hours, and if I fell at the final hurdle, I was not looking forward to doing it all again from the beginning.

EPILOGUE

And so Jin stood victorious as Solar explained his options. The power of godhood tempted him sorely. He had experienced the frustration and pain of powerlessness, as he was unable to protect those he cared for the most... Khalid, Dynaheir, Imoen, Aerie etc... He had sworn to become the most powerful being in the realms so that nobody can ever harm Imoen and Aerie again...

But accepting godhood meant leaving them behind, and a continued existence of constant strife, with more experienced, and possibly more powerful deities like Cyric, counted as his enemies. What good is power if obtaining it would rob him of what he was trying to save and protect in the first place? And could he really control the essence of the Lord of Murder? Will such evil power rob him of whatever is left of his compassion, love and innocence? Will he become the very thing he had been fighting to prevent all long... the rise of a new Lord of Murder.

Thus, Jin looked upon Aerie, his beloved, her belly starting to swell with the growth of their baby boy, smiled, and asked Solar to remove the taint of Bhaal from him, and grant him the freedom to live out the rest of his mortal days with Aerie by his side.

Months later, Aerie would give birth to a baby boy, who she agreed to name Anomen, in honour of Jin's former companion, at times rival, and in the end, great friend. Years after that, a baby girl was born, who they named Jaheira, in memory of the fierce warrior-druid who was Jin's mentor, protector and counsel through his darkest hours, and who fought fearlessly by his side until the bitter end.

[spoiler]
I wish Imoen and Minsc (and Boo!) also hung around with Charname in the future, but the epilogues clearly states that they didn't.

Tips For Noobie?

My friend recently started playing BG2 and he is having a hard time...What tips do you suggest i give him?

I told him:

_Get Keldorn...he is the number #1 NPC imo... Keldorn's True Sight and Dispel Effects + Casomyr makes life so easy. And of course Gauntlets of Dexterity
-Mages are the most useful class, and spells like Breach, Pierce Shield, Warding Whip, etc are extremely important.
-Stoneskin + Mirror Image is OP
-Don't use proficiency slots on: daggers, clubs, short swords, etc if you are a fighter type.
-Thief is super important
-Rest Rest Rest, Save Save Save
-Your gonna want some bags of holding/Potion Cases etc,
-Try to save things...like scrolls, potions etc.
-The game is much easier when all powerful classes are represented: Cleric (Mostly this one)/Druid, Fighter/Paladin/Ranger, Mage, Thief

Thats all i could think of off the top of my head...Any other very important things he should know?

How do I find the BG2 EE portraits to bring them into BG1 EE?

Hey guys,

This is my first playthrough of BG 2, inspired by the master storyteller, 'Tord' of the Youtube Channel, 'mynameisnotlilly'. As a complete noobie to Let's Plays and BG 2, my first few sessions were pretty shaky, but I feel like I am learning and improving in both regards, and will now try to share/publicise my efforts a bit more. Hopefully a few of you will find it interesting/entertaining, perhaps reminiscing about your own 'first time' with BG 2 ;)

My Let's Play is the complete opposite to the only other active Let's Play on this forum (that I am aware of). Whereas 'zur312' is obviously a veteran powergaming silently through a heavily modded game that jacks up the difficulty, I am a BG 2 noobie roleplaying blindly (and not silently) through the Vanilla experience at 'Core-rules' difficulty. Whereas he only uploads the highlights from his journey, I am uploading every minute of mine to retain a complete record of my first adventure.

Anyways enough fluff, more details can be found in my original post below, and also on my youtube channel. Here's some handy links :)

My original post:
[spoiler]
This is my first full playthrough of BG 2, and also my first attempt to record a Let's Play of any game, inspired by the master storyteller, 'Tord' of the Youtube Channel, 'mynameisnotlilly'.

Sadly I do not share his talent for roleplay or his radio-ready voice, so I do not promise any quality or level of expertise, either with regards to gaming or narration. In periods, it basically becomes 'Let's watch this noob play BG 2 whilst thinking out loud.'

I am now recording primarily for my own enjoyment, so that I will be better motivated to remain faithful to roleplay and so that I can look back on what I am sure will be an epic journey through the great city of Athkatla and Empire of Amn beyond. If anyone else might be interested in following my trials and tribulations, then I will steadily upload my adventures onto Youtube.

Oh yeah, I am playing BG 2 Vanilla, with the only installed mod being the BG 2 Fixpack (Corefixes only) from http://www.gibberlings3.net/

I would regard my run as 'semi-blind'. With the exception of the very beginning of the game, I have no idea what to expect. I have avoided all walkthroughs/guides, but I have read the Manual that comes with the download from GOG, and I also use the following resources to help me in my journeys:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/258273-baldurs-gate-ii-shadows-of-amn/faqs/13870

Oh and of course I've sought guidance on this forum. But always in a non-spoiler-ish and specific way.

Under Review: Dynaheir

$

What did everybody think of Dynaheir? It has occurred to me when I was reading through the forums that there are actually a lot of different compliments and criticisms being levied at her.
Personally, I have always thought of Dynaheir as a highly-esteemed Mage whose eyes are set on a larger picture, which alongside her diligent study of magic has left her somewhat detached and difficult to speak to. Furthermore, she has her own mission in coming to the Sword Coast, of which the protagonist is only one part, and she retains a certain level of cold professionalism in her task. Somewhat arrogant, she is occasionally impatient and demanding, eternally accustomed to how she would be treated in Rasheman, and therefore has been somewhat alienated by culture shock in coming to the Sword Coast.

Dungeons & Dragons ... Lots and lots of Dragons (Potential Spoilers)

$

Hey guys!

It's been a while since I made a good little discussive thread on the forums so let's see how this goes down.

So I know there are Demigods, and Tarrasques and half-demon-half-undead-werewolf-ogres a myriad of unimaginably powerful creatures riddling Faerun and the many adjacent planes. Yet more so than any of these enemies do I find the classic Dragon to be the coolest and most frightening of the great enemies an adventuring party is likely to meet their end to.

Yet, there seems to be a very flippant disregard for the rarity of Dragons in the setting, as if to assume that because they are in the title they are commonplace - and I feel that at level 10 or at level 30 a Dragon should still be a troubling sight for a party. However, once you've killed 4 Dragons, you're less inclined to feel that kind of trepidation. I have finally just completed BG2:EE , and with the inclusion of 2 Dragons in Dorn Il-Khan's ToB sidequest, I'd wager I've killed about 8-10 Dragons throughout the course of BG2:EE. In my character records, every single member of my party's most powerful vanquish was one of the Dragons that can be found throughout SoA and ToB.

If it were me, I would be happy for the game only to have 3 Dragons spanning the length of it. I retain that Dragons look so badass in BG and their grandeur never tires, but it is a little underwhelming to find that actually there are as many Dragons between Amn and Tethyr as there are goblins.

So what are your thoughts on the matter? I realise that BG2 cannot possibly be as low-magic as BG1, and it is exactly this contrast that makes both such wonderful games, but nonetheless I would like to think that I can expect Dragons to be a rare occurrence in RPGs, despite their common recurrence in most medieval-esque fantasy games.

Lets make a sorcerer!

I'm about to make a sorcerer for a full playthrough with a sorcerer. And I want to spice things up for my spell selection!
This is how I will proceed, five spells per level (i will remove XP cap) each with a different rule on what I will pick.
Here are the rules:
first spell, you pick it,
second spell, i pick it (not from the same school as spell one)
third spell, random spell
fourth spell, random from a predefined school ( i cannot pick any spell from that school except if it's a random spell or random school)
fifth spell, i pick it from a random school at each level.

I need your help for two things : help me pick one spell per level and help me pick a school from which I will have one spell at each level.
Thanks!

Edit: changed the fourth spell rule and second spell rule

What about now, how successful is BG:EE and BG2:EE?

How successful is BG:EE (ipad and pc) and BG2:EE (ipad and pc)? Did it was a financial success for Overhaul Games/Beamdog? I for instance bought these 4 products and I'm an happy customer.

In fact I would like to know if these 2 projects were a good operation, if Overhaul Games/Beamdog are happy with the results (if they are good) and if they still want to develop or enhance this kind of isometric games?

In my opinion, it was a great year for us with the release of BG:EE and BG2:EE and the next one will be even better, I'm thinking of Tides of Numenera, Pillars of Eternity, The Banner Saga for example. But still, I would love to play on an enhanced edition of Icewind Dale and Icewind Dale 2 on my pc and my ipad and equally to a next title of the Baldur's Gate Saga.

So I'm wondering.. What about now?

[Edit] @Heindrich1988, correct.

Whether it is with a character you can't normally romance or with a new character from the mod, which is your favorite?

So this is just a thread for interesting things that people have picked up over the years. While most of the information has been freely available for some time, the game is big enough that you might find something you missed. If not, it's still fun to see just how much detail the developers put in.

Did you know that if you are playing an elf named Drizzt, and your reputation is under 12, Drizzt will attack you? Did you also know that if you kill the three mages guarding the skyship devices in Baldur's Gate, then Shandalar skips the 'asking' part of sending you to the Ice Island? Not surprising, given that they were his daughters. Guy is probably a bit angry at you.

One of the changes that got me excited about the enhanced editions were the addition of new potential party members and their various quest-lines. Of course now I have to decide who of the old guard I can take out of my party so I can see what the new characters have to offer. To help with that, I'm curious what others here think of the new characters. Who is your favorite/which is your favorite questline of these and why?

I've never really used this skill... Always wanted the extra points for dungeon crawling/scouting, and never really wanted the extra risk factor.
Apart from raiding shopkeepers, what other goodies are available, and where? Does being hidden/ invisible improve your chances?
Thanks for the help...

How Much Harder Is SCS?

$

I played with it in BG1 for a short time, but it kind of frustrated me...Smarter mages was so ridiculous with no breach...Anyways i got to the last battle in BG1 and couldn't beat it, i posted for some tips, got some really good ones which knowing now im sure i could beat it, but still i kinda gave up on it and never beat that last battle :D

Regardless, in my mind i thought "Smarter mages would not be a big deal at ALL with breach" considering thats what you need anyways...

So how much harder is it really?

To get a base for my skill level

I beat BG1 normal twice, Core Rules twice, once core rules solo (Archer)
I beat BG2 + TOB Three times, once normal, twice core rules

My last playthrough of BG2 was kind of a breeze. Don't get me wrong, it certainly has its challenges that i feel will never go away unless i cheese battles, but it was certainly done with much more ease than i had before...I actually got through the Melissian fight without a single reload for once, and without abusing wish...lol

Anyways, my question is, could i handle SCS? How much harder is it really? And will it be frustrating?

Am i correct in believing that BG1 SCS without breach is a nightmare? P.S. I figure if CHARNAME was an inquistor with true sight, it would be much easier :D.

Anyways let me know...Thanks

The no reload challenge (spoiler warning)

One of the most fun thing to do in BG is to play with no reload.

The point of the thread is for you to describe your attempts (failed or successful)

I'll start with mine (i just list the significative attempts, not the ones in which i died after 5 minutes). All these playthrough were on core rules difficulty (save for leveling, to get max hp)

- Fighter/mage/thief. Solo. Died in baldur's gate (level 5/5/6) from the mages upstairs of the magical shop (forgot their were casting horror...)
- Berserker. Solo. Died at level 6 from an ankheg, ambushing me while resting
- Inquisitor. In group of 4 (imoen, minsc, viconia). Still in progress (in cloakwoods)
- Berserker / mage (dual 7/8). Solo. Sill in progress (in catacombs at candlekeep). I should succeed it with this one (unless i do something dumb), as he is now 7/8 and almost unkillable (berserker kit is awesome)

My next try will be a solo sorcerer.

Some advices for those who want to try it :
- i find solo play easier than group play (as defense is paramount in no reload, and much easier to get on one character than on 6)
- very good knowledge of the game is necessary.
- when playing solo, never roll to save against a deadly effect (paralysis, horror, charm....) -> you need to get immunities (potions, items, abilities, spells) or you will die.
- always have an invisibility potion ready, as a panic button

Best Thief Build for Backstabbing/Melee?

I know this a BG:EE forum, but I am playing BGT. This forums seems more active than the ones I use to frequent for BG2.

Anyhow, my favorite class is a Fighter -> Druid (Kensai or Berserker). I am playing the game again and I have been trying a Gnome F/I (Lvl 4/4 right now or thereabouts). I was getting kind of bored and thinking of trying athief build. This would be for a BGT run through the whole series.

I remember a lot of buzz about Kensai -> Thief. However, how much would Kensai suck in BG1 portion? I'd probably dual at lvl9. How are they at melee? Great at backstabbing no doubt, but after that . . . I am sure with UAI much better, but that is way off.

So, what would be a good dual class build for a thief strong in backstabbing but still able to hold his own in melee?
