Shag, Marry, Kill: The Baldur's Gate Version

Okay, classic game. You choose among the romance interests in the Baldur's Gate Trilogy one to spend a single, memorable, steamy night with, one to spend the rest of your life with till death do you part, and one to chunk in any way you see fit. Try to choose options compatible with your gender/preference/orientation/whatever. Feel free to explain your choices :)

I'll begin:
Shag: Jaheira (I feel like she'd have some crazy primal nature side. Hopefully not too freaky... being called "omnipresent authority figure" may be a bit much)
Marry: Aerie (I don't like blondes, but she's a sweetheart and my kids may get wings... sweet!)
Kill: Viconia (Almost shagged her... but then she may kill me first, so there you go. Close call just couldn't bring myself to kill Neera)

Neera ain't wifey material, too non-committed and wild surges may not be safe during conception...

Berserker/Thief vs. Fighter/Assassin (obviously keepered, taken through the whole saga)

Also what race would you make the character... I would probably make the character chaotic neutral and plan to run Korgan, Mazzy and Jan. I guess I might take Anomen for once as a healer or alternatively take aerie... Imoen is likely as well but can be convinced to deviate for once from taking her. I am a fan of neera too.

I remember aerie fights with Korgan though, but I feel like having a real turn undead rather than viconia's this run even though I'm considering making a male character for the romance for once.

Bg1 I'll probably just take imoen, branwen, one of the couples and coran or something for op bows.

Well, I'm not sure how many of you have seen this, but I thought I'd bring it to the attention of those who haven't: http://media.wizards.com/downloads/dnd/MiBG_Launch Weekend.pdf

For those who don't know, basically, it's something of a distant sequel to the Baldur's Gate series, featuring... Abdel Adrian.

Yeah, I can hear your sighs from here.

That said, his portrayal here seems to be somewhat better than his novel portrayal, if only because he doesn't get to open his mouth too much.

So, better than it could have been overall, though it still absolutely ***** the plot of the games over.

Do you suspect any of these NPC drive their wagons on the other side of the road?

Okay, im not sure... But... if I was to talk to Gaelin from the Shadow Thiefs about getting help to find Imoen. After paying him and moving to chapter 3. Will i be missing out on anything in chapter 2?

Hammerspace

Hello, the use of Hammerspace is starting to bother me more and more lately and causing me to lose immersion and willing suspension of disbelief in Baldur's Gate and games like it.

For a definition, if you don't know what that is, see here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hammerspace

I find it ludicrous to think that any warrior could switch at will from fighting with archery to pole weapon to large blunt weapon or sword and shield. I also don't find it believable that a shield and a large sword can be mounted on the back in addition to a heavy backpack, as is done in Dragon Age and many other games that use Hammerspace.

I am starting to self-restrict myself in my runs based on what I can imagine is actually possible. So, for example, my player character berserker is using archery, but, I am forbidding him to use either a polearm or a shield. He explores areas with his bow in hand, a quiver on his back or waist belt, and a notched arrow. On sight of enemies, he fires, as do his ranged-equipped companions.

Once his position is overrun, I am imagining that he throws the bow on the ground, and draws a weapon, which must be sheathable on the belt, on the side opposite the quiver.

"Squishy" characters are allowed to switch freely between short sword, dagger, or small hafted weapon and bow, being imagined to hold the bow in the left hand while fighting with the drawn light weapon in the right, which can be re-sheathed easily if there's a chance to go back to archery.

Crossbows require two hands to operate. One to hold it, and one to load it and crank it. There is no way that I can see that you could have any melee weapon on your person other than a light one (short sword, dagger, or light hafted) and still hold and operate a crossbow and its bolts, while being able to switch to melee if and when your position is overrun.

There is *no* way you could have a heavy shield strapped to your left arm, and then fight with your right hand with anything but a one-handed weapon. So, I am starting to self-restrict my shield warriors from using anything but darts or throwing axes as ranged weapons.

I am making an exception for clerics and slings, where I am imagining that they are actually using darts, as the idea that a cleric wouldn't use a dart is also very silly to me. A real sling would take two hands to operate. There is no way you could use a sling with a heavy shield on your left arm. *Maybe* you could do it with a buckler on your left wrist.

What are your thoughts about this?

I just wanted to give well-deserved praise to DavidW for SCS -> Awesome!

I've been playing BG since BG1 came out originally but never went for any modding. But boy did I miss something, it's a completely new experience and I love it.

Of course he's an evil b****rd for placing beholds in the good old sewers that cought me with my pants down when I just wanted to quickly kill the sea troll and locking the door at the Crooked Crane lich when my thief wanted to quickly pop in and grab Daystar for the first trip to the graveyard. ;)

I've never sweated as much with the druid grove like this time with the spectral trolls (and I didn't even enter their lair...) and been postponing D'Arnise keep after this experience. Didn't even try to take out the shadow dragon yet at level 11. Now I scout everything before walking blindly into the ambushes and fall back on tried and tested stacks of webs plus AoE and Cloud goodness because I need every lever I can get my hands on.

The most transformative thing for me is that breach gets blocked by the spell defences now and I finally need to face the mage antispell battles and that made me rethink my complete party composition. Probably for the first time ever I'll have 3 arcane casters when Imoen rejoins.

If you've never tried it -> do so, it's worth the installation effort (even on a mac where it took me about an hour to get it to install properly...)

Help me choose a 3 member party for BG2

I've been playing with 6 member parties forever for the interaction and all. Decided to finally try a smaller party for once, mostly because of the faster xp rate, I'd like to at least be of the same level as the enemies once. I mean, it's like every mage you face has bloated levels when compared to your characters, that and less micromanaging.
Charname will be either Fighter 7>Mage so he already starts dualed or Fighter 9>Mage, it's just my favorite class combo.
I'd rather have a thief so I can disarm/unlock, Jan fits like a glove especially since he can cast spells as a specialist and can also achieve very high pickpocket values for mass stealing even at the beginning of the game.
Who should my third member be? I'm guessing either Viconia or Korgan, Anomem would be better but his personality is.... urgh.
Korgan's a beast when it comes to tanking, especially against enemy mages. Viconia can't really do much besides buffing and healing, but as a single class cleric she levels pretty fast and will quickly achieve max Skeleton Warriors and a powerful Dispel Magic.
Hmmm which one do you guys think I should choose? Also, how hard is the beginning with a small party? My plans are basically going to be stealing all I can with Jan for good gear/money fast, and I guess I could always start hard battles against humans with a GM+Chaos... using SCS so I'm not sure how decent summons like those from spider figurine/horn of valhalla/etc will be considering mages have a tendency of always casting Death Spell.
I also realize it'd be better as a party of custom characters, but I'm not really a fan of a bunch of silent guys.

The crtl + i Command

$

For all my years of playing BG I remain a total amateur with the programming elements of the game (and, indeed, of every game). So without blowing my query out of proportion into a lengthy dissertation, how does crtl + i work? I ask because I tend to hold it down, and the feedback/text bar then scrolls through a myriad of unintelligible commands. Sometimes my characters turn towards one another and utter one of their generic command acknowledgement phrases but don't actually initiate a dialogue with anybody. Any information that might help me understand how the command works would be really appreciated, if not just out of interest :)

Best NPCs for my character concept

Okay, I'm planning a playthrough of BGII:EE with a human F "Neutral" Ken->Mage. For purposes of RP, assume she's a F/M; I just don't like how F/Ms work in general and esp. in non-solo run throughs.

The character concept occurred to me as I was driving one day, and I thought that despite the fact that BGII comes off, to me at least, as a fairly light-hearted game, its really pretty dark. Maybe this is because while I love the isometric presentation, it does rely on the writing to convey pretty much all the emotions in - I don't really feel too upset by Irenicus torturing me in the beginning. Now Rielev on the other hand scares the bejeezus out of me.

Anyway, I tried to come up with a character concept that started with a relatively blank slate at the start of BG 1, and see how they would feel at the start of BGII, and I realized, man does a lot of terrible stuff happen to the PC.

Spoilers, obviously.

1. Gorion gets brutally murdered in front of you and you flee in terror and desire not to be similarly chest ventilated.

2. If I remember correctly, the first people you're likely to meet after Imoen are Xzar and Montaron...Um, yeah. Plus, even if you like them, they meet a not-so-great fate in BGII at the hands of Harpers.

3. Assassins hound you constantly throughout much of BG1.

4. Khalid and Jaheira join you (so you get some guidance/replacement parental figures; hey, a positive event!).

5. IIRC a whole bunch of Candlekeep people you grew up with get murdered and replaced by dopplegangers, which is enough all by itself to **** with your mind.

6. At least temporarily, you're framed and arrested in BG and have to cooperate with a child-murderer and perhaps worse to escape, thus helping him escape.

7. BG culminates in you killing, in a brutal knock-down drag out brawl, your "brother."

Oh, and by the way, all of this happens to you because you're the spawn of the God of Murder which, by the way, you had zero choice in.

Then, BG II opens with:

1. You being kidnapped and tortured.

2. One half of your pseudo parental replacement being tortured to death (whoops, so much for that positive event!).

3. Your (theoretically) constant childhood companion, who made it all the way through the assassins and other stuff in BG, being at best kidnapped and imprisoned.

So I'm guessing by this point the PC is seriously messed up. I can't see them realistically being any kind of "good" figure, unless they really are a hero/saint; they just have zero constancy in their life and terrible things keep happening to them, besides an inborn desire to basically murder. So while I'm not designing a deliberately evil character, I do see the PC as someone, by BGII, with a lot of bitterness and hate, serious trust issues, and a temper, and someone who starts to believe the only thing they're good at is killing - and maybe starts to embrace that.

As an example, I don't see the PC as the type to, say participate in poisoning the Druids; why would she, there's nothing in it for her, really, and surely the bad-guy whose name escapes me there can't be trusted, and is condescending besides. The PC would do everything possible to get back Garrick's kid, just to spit in Firkraag's face as much as possible. But the PC also would probably not give two damns about Hendak, or the cursed Amaunator people, and would gut Mencar Pebblecrusher.

Now, given that concept, what NPCs do you think would make sense?

Imoen: Definitely a connection and trust there, and I think it would make sense the PC would feel motivated to rescue her. But I'm not sure exactly what mindset the PC would be in by the time she makes it to her. Plus there's the part where she has no content for all the stuff pre Ch 4. Is her dialogue in ToB fixed by EE?

Minsc: Nope. PC has no patience for a deranged do-gooder ranger w/ miniature giant space hamster.

Jaheira: This one is interesting to me. Potential love interest (with tweak, obv), that might make sense if I also use a mod to allow me to choose some of the harsher options without breaking it. Wouldn't be the most stable of romances, but the PC isn't exactly stable. Plus I think the harper quests and possible responses really fit in the well with the theme of the PC. But Jaheira, despite her alignment, is really a goody-two-shoes.

Yoshimo: Well, the PC has trust issues, so I'm not quite sure why she'd let him come along given the meeting circumstances. But the mid-game twist would fit delightfully; might be worth it just for that.

Aerie: Lulz.

Anomen: My PC would absolutely murder him. Actually, is there an option that leads to violence at all with him in his initial dialogues? IIRC he just leaves. Pity.

Edwin: Personally, I think he's hilarious, and my PC might too. I don't know that he fits or doesn't fit, but he's definitely a potential inclusion.

HD: Ehhh...I don't my PC would ever really allow him to join? PC might murder the wizard, grab the stone, help with the portal, and maybe even (bit of a stretch) go after them out of anger when they're snatched, but that's about it.

Jan: No. PC has no time for turnip peddlers. PC will probably have his ass thrown in jail.

Keldorn: Super-lulz.

Korgan: Hm. I like that he's uncomplicated and a nasty killing machine. But he also has a nasty habit of gutting his own teammates. But he fits the PCs temperament pretty closely. But maybe too closely?

Nalia: Must...resist...urge to murder...right away. Must...get quest...then murder Countess...then murder Nalia...so hard not to murder immediately...

Viconia: This one is another difficult call. PC might see her as a kindred spirit, always being betrayed. But drow are notoriously untrustworthy. But PC would have some guarantee of trustworthiness since everyone else wants to burn her at the stake. As much as I'd like a cleric, I think she might not make the cut.

Cernd: No. Stop talking like that.

Mazzy: Super-duper lulz. I'm not entirely sure I can even think of a reason my PC would want to do the Umar questline at all; PC isn't motivated by altruism or greed, and Shade Lord hasn't shafted her in any way, so...

Valygar: I kind of thought this might make sense; he's a pretty edgy dude, plus the PC would definitely side with him over the CW after she finds out what a crap job she's been given. But he hates wizards, and really would NOT trust the PC. (Plus, I find him to not have very much personality; I feel like he has fewer banters or something).

Rasaad: Haven't played with him, but doesn't seem like he'd work. But maybe? I don't know enough about him. Definitely would conflict with some evil characters, I'm guessing.

Neera: No, just did a duo run with her (was a lot of fun; there were probably some spiders).

Dorn: I really like his voice acting, and haven't tried him out, and would like to. He's a wee bit snuper-evil for the PC, who might balk at the initial quest. I also don't know how the romance would potentially fit. I'm guessing that aside from the initial quest, most of his reactions/interjections might suit the PC well.

Hexxat: Also haven't tried her much. Well, the initial recruiting is a bit of a stretch, because it's sort of manipulative. But I guess it isn't really, so much as preys on the PCs curiosity. And other than that I have to imagine they'd get along well and I think her quest probably fits the right themes. No idea about romance.

Mr. ToB: With geas, mos' def.

So that leaves me with Imoen, Yoshi, Jaheira, Edwin, Korgan, Viccy, Dorn, and Hexxat as potentials. Imoen and Yoshi can be swapped, and Imoen and Mr. ToB come late. I wouldn't have both Viccy and Jaheira, and I might not even have either.

So does anyone whose played with the new NPCs more or just remembers particular banters, etc., have some thoughts as to who goes best?

I've been curious about this ever since I came across him in ToB, and was forced to resurrect him. I haven't asked earlier cos I didn't want to be spoiler'd encase he had a further role to play in ToB.

Now that I know he doesn't and confirmed that you indeed had no choice but to resurrect him, I wonder what other players did regarding Sarevok...

This is going to be a kinda pointless thread but I just felt like sharing this for some reason. Without fail, every time I go to the old temple of Amaunator underneath the Athkatla sewers (part of the unseeing eye questline) I have to stop and very carefully examine something in the area before moving on. So strange and ever so slightly dirty looking is this object that it is almost impossible to not stop and ponder what it could be for about 30 seconds.

So thoughts anyone? What is this thing? Has anyone else wondered about it or is it just me?

Hi Friends,

I had some custom Baldur's Gate Lego minifigs created by Saber Scorpion. They were handed out last night at the Beamdog christmas party, check them out:

image
Jan, Viconia, Minsc (and Boo), Korgan, Yoshimo, Edwin

image
Neera, Baeloth, Hexxat, Dorn, Rasaad

Sarevok, Melissan, Irenicus, Bodhi

Unfortunately these aren't a retail product that you can purchase, but Saber Scorpion does all manner of custom minifig orders if you've just got to have a Lego-Minsc of your own.
