Persistent BG habits

(just to have something to talk about while waiting for the release): I've been wanting to start this topic for a while and seeing other topics drift off to silliness for what I see as a sign of mixed boredom and nervousness for us beign close to the releasedate without new trailers, screenshots or info to talk about, I offer this to discuss:

Are there things in BG you always do, no matter what party you pick or character you choose?

It could be obsessive compulsive behaviour or well-founded choices (though part of my diagnose is not OCD nor do I believe in free will, but your mileage my vary),

share what's your persistent habits!

I got these:

- I always keep all of the quest items, even after the quests are completed. Once my inventory gets too full of books, letters, special items that only have a one-time function, I stash them all in one place, the same for every walkthrough I do: in BG I store them all in the wizard Zhurlong's tent, in BG II in the container just outside the left entrance of the copper coronet (after the Sphere has arrived so the map won't change anymore).

- I am very compulsive in always going for the best result in a fight. I suffer from chronic reloading. If a fight turns out bad, I reload for a better result. What I especially don't like, is one of my characters falling in battle. I know I can resurrect them, but sorting out the inventories of the remaining characters to create place for the dropped items, carrying it to a temple and then re-equipping the fallen character I find more of a hassle than reloading the fight.

So, Xzar not being a party member in BG2.

Xzar, my favorite joinable NPC in BG1. I was quite upset when I learned that he could not be in my party when I started playing BG2. I considered anti-depressants when I saw him viciously, unjustly slain by a filthy harper. Anyone else feel this way? Not just about him mind you, any other NPCs.

Thinking about choosing a half-elf instread of an elf fighter/mage

Recently I've strangely been considering playing a half-elf fighter/mage instead of an elf, even though it would mean losing out on the elf weapon bonuses and high charm resistance, just so that I can romance Viconia in BG2, LOL! Also it would make me feel like I have a greater choice of weapons (e.g. axes, crossbows), as wouldn't feel I'd be missing out on the elf sword/bow bonuses.

Has anyone else thought along these lines, or am I the only one deranged as such?

Axes as a viable ranged weapon choice?

I've been re-thinking my planned figher/mage build for BGEE (even perhaps playing as a half-elf, see: http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/6648/thinking-about-choosing-a-half-elf-instread-of-an-elf-fightermage ) and was wondering whether axes would be a viable ranged weapon choice to take me through to BG2?

I know there's only a couple of magic throwing axes in BG1 (a +2 one in Candlekeep Dungeons and Bala's Axe in Durlag's Tower, which can be used both for melee and ranged), which means lugging around the heavy non-magical ones for much of the game and having to restock often (though I think shop supplies are pretty much unlimited - is that true), but axes have a few things going for them:

1) they're one of the few ranged weapons (other than some magic hammers in BG2, I think, and one sling) which add strength to damage, so good for fighters with high Str

2) they're one handed, so can use a shield with them

3) some of the magic throwing ones in BG2 pretty good (e.g. Azuredge, which is +4 vs. undead, though you have to be Good to use this, and the +2 Hanguards axe and +3 Rifthome Axe, though I can't remember how easy these are to get early on), as are some of the melee ones (e.g. Frostreaver, Axe of the Unyielding).

4) Don't require buying magic ammo (though I know the same could be said for one shortbow and one crossbow in BG2, but my main archer will be using the best of these), and +3 magic arrows aren't available until ToB

I guess if going for these, would make sense to also go for two-weapon fighting in the long-run, rather than two-handed, though the off-hand abilities of axes are not amzing, though would probably go for Belm (+! APR) or that sword (a Katana?) that gives bonus spells in the off-hand

There's a +1 melee axe avilable early on in Beregost, though the +2 one isn't available until you get into Baldur's Gate itself.

Was thinking that could start in BG1 with :

Axes ++
Two-weapon fighting ++

Then:

Level 3-7
Scimitar ++ (picking up the +2 one on Durlag's Tower late game)
[Or perhaps an extra pick in two-weapon fighting first]

So would start BG2 with both these "ready", would mean missing out one quarter staves early on, though, but I guess these would be my next picks (or maybe Katanas for the one that gives bonus spells)

What do you reckon, are axes worth it over bows for my fighter/mage in the long-run?

Do thrown weapons get their magical +1/+2/+3 etc. added to damage?

$

I was wondering, do thrown weapons (axes, daggers, darts, and the dwarven thrower hammer) get their magical +1/+2/+3 etc. added to damage? I'm aware this *isn't* the case for arrows and bolts (at least in the BG2 engine, which is what I assume BGEE will be using), but thought magical damage might get added to throw weapons. Can anyone confirm whether this is the case and which thrown weapons (if not all) this applies to?

I'm aware that the throwing axe is the only thrown weapon (perhaps the dwarven thrower also) which gets the characters strength bonus applied, but am unsure about the magical damage.

Hacking Files from BG:EE

This has probably been answered in another thread somewhere (sorry), but do we think that the PC version of BG:EE will save games in the same format as the game does today, and if so, will Gatekeeper or other tools that are used today be compatible to hack game files or will something new have to be used?

do we know anything about surprise which was mentioned by Trent Oster for this who pre-pre ordered BGEE?

4 Slots in Two-Handed and 2 Slots in Bow / Or 4 Slots in Two-Handed and 2 Slots in Two-Handed Style?

In BG I always took a pure fighter who was focused on two-handed. This always left 2 slots for a bow. Now that we've got styles, I'm curious if I should put all 6 slots into my sword (4 in sword and 2 in Style) or if I should keep the bow around. I'm thinking to keep the bow because obviously if I'm going two-handed I can then use a two-handed bow as opposed to if I dual-wielded or used a shield. Anyway just looking for opinions.

Complaint about being Electronic Artsed over $2 in pre-ordering

I strongly support this project, as Baldur's Gate and the other infinity engine games are my favorite games of all time. It is a shame that this branch of RPG development was stunted in favor of unsightly 3D action genre nonsense without gripping storylines masquerading as RPGS.

That being said, here is my complaint.

Y'all raised the pre-order price from $18 to $20. I was planning to pre-order because the price was better. I assumed the prices would remain constant as they were announced. $18 to pre-order, $20 after launch. I figured I would wait a little longer to pre-order since the release date got pushed back.

But suddenly the pre-order price has changed. So why pre-order? Why not just download the game for free out of spite? I'm still going to buy the game, just like I did every other infinity engine game. And Baldur's gate II EE. And whatever else is churned out by this team. I support the cause.

I do ask that you the developers act with honor and treat me the fan/customer with respect. I put on pants in the morning. I stand up when I go to the bathroom. I don't take a long time in the shower. I keep my cars and guns oiled. I eat vegetables.

Don't electronic arts me over $2. This is not a case of "too bad" and "tough luck" and "stop complaining about nothing." Does this portend more Maddenesque behavior by Beamdog, or can we reach an accord of future upright conduct?

Portrait dimensions for BG:EE

So it's that time of year again where I go about making a big catalogue of portraits for all the BG NPCs, but I'm wondering on the dimension sizes for the portraits for BG:EE. I remember the old format was 38 by 60 for smaller portraits and 110 by 170 for the larger ones. But I am wondering if the dimensions will be different for BG:EE. Any developer imput would be appreciated.

Generally it was a resolution issue, I used to play my BG2 on the second highest supported resolution at the time. And the portraits looked fantastic, but many of them would not imput back into a non resolution modded BG1.

Any help is appreciated.

I'm seriously OCD. I restart Icewind Dale and Baldur's Gate *TOO* much. Does anyone else have this problem? If I miss something or find out I could do something better, or decide to change my stats, etc. etc. etc. I just start over lol. Ugh. I think its a sickness.

This thread is gonna look old really quick... Who cares! In 10 days I will be leaving Candlekeep! Yay!

I am going to install a lock on the door and then smear Marmite around the door frame to prevent demons and the wife from crossing the doorway and disturbing me.

I have already stocked food for 3 days gaming in the corner.

Ablutions will have to be few and far between but I think I can wee out the window...

What preparations are you making?

EDIT: Time update...

Hi,

I would like if it will be possible to start a game on the PC version and to continue it on the iPad version, and to continue on the computer, and so on... I explain I would like to play on my computer when I'm home, but during the day (travel or lunch time for example) I would like to continue on my iPad.

Will it be possible?

Thank you

Interview with Oster at PC Gamer praising the fans for their excellent translations.

Trent Oster gives an interview at:
http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/11/16/baldurs-gate-contains-close-to-a-million-words-of-dialog-and-how-fan-translations-helped-the-enhanced-edition/

Excerpt from the interview, which will be posted in its entirety next week:

PC Gamer: I’m curious to know if, going through all those source files, you know just how much writing is in Baldur’s Gate. It must be tens of thousands of lines.

Trent Oster: I’m not sure the exact number of lines, but if I remember correctly, I think there’s close to a million words of dialog.

PCG: Wow, a million? I ask because the other day the Dishonored guys were talking about the number of dialog lines in their game. I thought it was an interesting statistic, because we don’t always think of it in that sense—that these are novel sized or bigger works.

TO: Yeah, the most hilarious example I can think of is when we [BioWare] signed Neverwinter with the Atari guys. So they sent us their localization form and it had three boxes on the form, and it said: “Number of words of dialog: Less than 100; 100 to 1,000; 1,000-plus.”

I made a fourth box on there, checked it off, and wrote “1.2 million words.” I sent the e-mail back to them, and got a call the next morning from the translator saying, “You’re kidding, right?”

And I’m like, “No, I’m dead serious. There’s 1.2 million words of dialog in Neverwinter Nights.”

And they’re like, “Oh my God, oh my God.”

And they hung up on me and I didn’t hear from them for a week. Apparently they had a big meltdown in their localization department as they realized the volume of what they committed to.

Have you ever noticed any errors in the Baldur's Gate or Icewind Dale series that cracked you up?

Was playing through Icewind Dale today in anticipation for BG:EE. Thought it was funny that the game takes place in 1281 but that Gerth in Kuldahar has a book for sale in his shop on the "Recent History of the North" talking about the year 1367. Whoops. I bet that's a best seller that one.

The best thief build?

I love the thief class, and I very often play as one. Last time I've played BG2, I was an assassin.
But I'm sure someone have made something much more powerful.
So what is the best (in your opinion) thief build? It can be any kit or any multiclass, but it has to be thief.

Not sure if this has been asked before, but will there be a remake of Baldur's Gate 2 and its xp as well? And put together like BGT did?

Awesome fan video in anticipation of BG:EE
