Should BG2:EE include the "Ascension" mod by David Gaider?

$

Following different discussions we've had on this forum*, I wanted to get an idea of how people feel about the "Ascension" mod. As a quick reminder, the Ascension mod includes:
- New Slayer forms
- New dialogue with Imoen and Sarevok
- Re-worked epilogues for some of the companions
- A grandiose final battle adding a lot of tactical and role-playing depth
- More difficult and interesting versions of most major battles
- Quality translations in various languages

See http://weidu.org/ascension/Ascension-WeiDU.txt for the full description.

To be perfectly clear, I'm talking about the full Weidu-Ascension mod including all the improved battles.

Checking In: An Open Discussion about Developer Transparency

$

This post isn't going to show you any great spoilers about what's in the next patch or the next game or the next five games (and that number is totally arbitrary, it doesn't mean we're planning to make a Baldur's Gate VII: Advent [Bhaal]Children). Those of you who have been following Trent's twitter feed have seen snippets of what's going on--multiplayer matching being tested, Android not going as smoothly as we hoped, the art assets being lost (though that one's from over a year ago)--and hopefully that alone should tell you that we want to tell you more, even if we don't have the time to post proper newsletters or announcements on the forum.

Unfortunately, we don't have as much time for newsletters or announcements as we'd like. Posts you see from the developers (that's anybody with a blue background in their posts) are made in the thirty seconds of downtime between code projects. Fixing bugs, implementing features, scripting content, all of that is what we're focusing on right now. And that's great news, because it means that when a patch or a new game is released you know that the developers have put in the time and care to make sure it's worthwhile. The next patch is going to be enormous, and we're doing everything we can to make sure that it's done right.

So what is this post for? Well, we've been noticing a number of people asking for greater transparency, and that's something we'd like to explore. The trick is knowing where to draw the line; what information to release, how to release it, what hints or rumors will spiral out of control, and when is that a good thing. So I put it to you, fellow gamers: How should a developer keep the community informed about a project's status, without making unreasonable promises and without levering expectations to the point where they can't be managed safely?

I'm not going to promise that any suggestion or suggestions made in this thread will be used as-posted, but I think it will be an interesting discussion. I imagine there will be a lot of disagreement about not only what information to release, but also how to release it and where. And that's all good feedback. What I'm looking for is ideas, and a discussion of those ideas. I'll be facilitating the best I can, as time allows.

Some talking points to get us started, and to keep in mind as we go forward:
#1: When does a developer reveal too much about a project (be it a bug, a feature, or an entire game)? How can developers avoid saturating the community with information while still keeping people informed?
#2: What is the best way to disburse information about a project (be it a bug, a feature, or an entire game)? What are some possible pitfalls of doing it that way, and how might those pitfalls be avoided?

I think that will be enough to get things started. Tell me what you think!

Best builds for a long term Paladin? (either Inquisitor or Cavalier)

I'm considering running a Paladin from the beginning of BG1 through BG2 and wondering what thoughts you may have about proficiencies to take. I was thinking beginning with:
If Cavalier then ** Two Handed Sword and ** Two handed weapon style (or should I take flail?)
If Inquisitor then **2 H Sword and ** Longbow, likely following up with 2 hand weapon style.

Probably taking flail next, as I know I'll need a bashing weapon for a lot of things in BG2...also considering bastard sword. It does seem important to go with a shield and even shield style for a cavalier though, no?

It's been many years since I've played BG2 and I'm excited because I forgot most of it so it will be all new to explore again, however, I'm also no longer acquainted with the progression of high level 2nd edition DnD characters.

Thanks for any insights.

How dangerous is this "wild" magic then?

Let's say I play a no-reload game and I play very conservatively (e.g. no casting *anything* in crowded towns).
How is the cumulative risk?

What if the wild mage is the PC?
What if it is Neera?

And, also just how much damage does falling cow do?

Here's how to add custom sound sets

$

0
Don't know if this has been addressed yet, but if so I'll post now and apologize later.

So after about a day of tinkering about with my game I finally figured out how to add custom sound sets.
After you've put your correctly named sound set in the sounds folder (Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition\Data\00766\lang\en_US\sounds (replace en_US with your language if not using English)) you need to edit a file called CHARSND.2da.

I would recommend using DLTCEP (just google it) to do this. In the editor press the 'Edit'-menu and select 'Tables'.
From that screen press 'Load Table' and look for CHARSND.

After you open it place the marker at the last column and then press the 'Add column'-button. Name the column the same as your soundset and under it you add the string references you want the sound to have.

Unless you want to actually add new ones for your soundset I would recommend changing them all to 30 which is completely blank. You must do this because keeping it to the default -1 will result in your sounds not being played.
And there you go!

If anything was unclear, just ask.

Example of the 2da-table after I added my custom sound set F_MONK1:

Awesome Wild Surges!

So today while running through the Bandit Camp, I was prepping everybody for battle, and had Neera cast armor with Nahal's reckless dweomer, because that's what I do. I got a bunch of rolls, two of which were "roll twice more". +4 save for one of them...whatever, I can't think of anything that would be harmed by armor unless you could reverse it a la P&P divine magic... Second result AoEd the armor, so it hit errybody! Everybody armor! CHARNAME armor! Garrick armor! Neera armor! Safana armor! Xan armor! That Guy You Can Only Get If You Enter The Right Keys At The Start Screen armor! :D!

There've also been situations where I've accidentally gated in nabassu, run in the other direction as fast as my pixel-legs could carry me, and grabbed some water or tea or giggled while watching those assassins in Gullykin/those hobgoblins outside of the Temple/Bassilus and his undead followers/diseased gibberlings try futilely to attack it because I have die rolls in my feedback window.

And, like, you know, the times I've had silence happen when I meant to cast a chromatic orb. Or the times I've AoEd magic missile spells. Sure, in the latter case it really sucks when I don't have mirror images up, but it's the bee's knees when I've got a bunch of enemies at my heels and all of a sudden they get force energy in their faces and any spells that they might be trying to cast get interrupted.

So I guess this is going to be one of those threads where we go "AWW YEAH" about awesome wild surges that have happened in our Forgotten Realms computer entertainment games. Good or bad, share them, people! But only ones that you liked.
Needless to say, I'm going to make a wild mage and dual it over to Cleric, because of the Gibberlings 3 BG II Tweak Pack.

....what do you believe is the most 'canon' CHARNAME in Baldur's Gate?

Personally, I cannot stand Abdel Adrian and I think his character is incredibly out of place in the saga. Some may hate me for saying that - but it is only an opinion.

I personally go would go for:

My favourite Lawful Evil Assassin who embraces his destiny as the new Lord of Murder. Starting as Lawful Neutral (Gorion taught him well) but taking the alignment change to evil whilst in hell as he is tempted by his fate.

Starting as Lawful Neutral allows the 'canon' party to make sense when transferring to Baldur's Gate. It also allows you to take a neutral ground and not end up alienating some of the more interesting party members throughout the series. As you become evil you can take advantage of the more powerful and interesting NPC's such as Sarevok.

To me, it feels like Baldur's Gate was written to be played this way.

Anyhow, what do you guys think? Any alternatives?

I find the Dragon Disciple extremely attractive as a power gaming class.

They have more HP than any arcane spellchucker, and they get a +1 to CON (I think at level 5).

If you start with an 18 CON, read the Manual of Bodily Health, and get to 5th level, you have a regenerating Sorcerer. That's just awesome!

Is there anywhere in the Baldur's Gate series where having a charisma score over 18 helps (other than store prices)? I usually get the charisma tome and boost my high charisma chars from 18 to 19 but I'm wondering if there is any point.

My favourite changes by far are the little graphical touches. :) What are yours?

Second circles under party members. Corresponding to their colour scheme helps me set them apart :) And it looks pretty

Active icons on character portraits

New clothing colours for RPCs

Coloured text for different damage types. Pretty! And useful :3

New portraits! Oh that one woman is just so pretty :3

Camping scenes in wilderness, dungeons, and inns

New scenes for story chapter endings (or beginnings?)

Adorkable goblins! :D Silly, dopey, with fun voice acting

New music for the new areas, especially in the goblin area

The new areas look so lovingly crafted. From the goblin plains to the goblin caves to the snowy mountains. The art is fantastic! ^_^

Chilly mountain dungeon! ^_^ Get to beat down them trolls ^-^ *fist pump*

Formerly Alternate NPC and PC portraits... because I'm bored with no BG:EE to play. :P

Just as it says on the [former] title. I suffer for want of my game, so I'll make sure you'll suffer, you'll ALL suffer, MWAHHAHAHHA! And I'll do so with 'art'. As I am an avid fan of the BG2 portrait style, I'm trying for getting as close to it as I can, but, yeah, it's not exactly easy, and I'm no artist, so, you've been warned. I'm going to keep posting more pictures as I make 'em. Here is one new and a few you might have already seen posted on a different thread (put here just for the sake of completion). If after I'm done with all the BG1 NPC portraits BG:EE still isn't out, I'm gonna scar you all even more with my pet project - pictures of what would they all look like after putting on that innocent looking, unidentified magical girdle. ]:D
I'll start gently:

Alternate Viconia - features changed to fit more with what Jaheira's and Aerie's pics established as elvish features. Skin color changed because I like black drows better than blue drows (although from the description someone posted, the drow skin does have a purple or blue tone to it, so the original pic isn't wrong, per se, it just isn't to my taste). Cloak and sky color changed just because. :) Original to the left, tweaked version to the right, for sake of easy comparison.
image

My fav PC, Karrion - glued together from at least five different pictures - hopefully you won't be able see any of Frankenstain's Monster in him. ;)
image

Nathaniel, from the mod. I like this mod, but none of the available pictures were quite appealing enough for me, so I messed with the one I liked best and did this:
image

Lady Malica, the evil halfling. If you care to insult her, do remember - she has darts hidden all over her person, AND her teeth are level with your groin. ]:)
BG1picture edited to get rid of the green light, alter her expression and trim the ears a bit, then a lot of other stuff added. (From the character creation screen, halflings are supposed to 'look mostly like small humans', and it was said elsewhere on the board that they do not, in fact, have pointy ears, but... I like pointy ears! So she has them).
Original to the left, tweaked version to the right, for sake of easy comparison.

BIG FAT EDIT on 14.03.2013
Adding information on the first page for ease of finding it:
For those of you who want to use any of my portraits: I uploaded them to @TiaxRulesAll dropbox. (Read his thread http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/8413/bgee-custom-portraits-dropbox-lets-compile-them-all-here-1300-sets-now-with-soundsets-section/p1 to learn how to get them). Folder with my pics is named 'Portraits (Syntia13)'. Below you'll find a chart with subtitled portraits - if you like one, go to the aforementioned dropbox and search the aforementioned folder for 3 files with names corresponding with the subtitle of your chosen pic. Have fun! :)

There is an excellent online Baldur's Gate game out there.

If you ever wanted to experience a really decent MMORPG version of the good old Baldur's Gate game from 1998, the best choice would be to try Baldur's Gate: The Sword Coast Chronicles. It is the best and most popular persistent world ever created for Neverwinter Nights 2, existing for 3-4 years now and still very much alive and thriving probably for many more years to come. What makes it very alluring to Baldur's Gate fans is that most of the game world has been recreated based on the game maps in Baldur's Gate 1.

I will do my best to describe BG-TSCC. Some information about me first. In the past I have played Baldur's Gate 1, Baldur's Gate 2, Icewind Dale, and Neverwinter Nights 1 in single player and six years in multiplayer. I discovered BG-TSCC and started playing it a year and a half ago.

I guess it might be best to provide the description in a form of a FAQ.

--------------------------

Q: What's in there for fans of the good old Baldur's Gate game released in 1998?

A: Developers recreated the world and game maps from the world and maps of the original Baldur's Gate game and the results are quite impressive in my opinion. If you have played the old Baldur's Gate game, you will certainly recognize many places. The world reaches north of Baldur's Gate to Troll Claw Hills and to the south through Friendly Arms Inn, Beregost and Nashkel through Cloudpeak Mountains to Amn, plus there is an entire big world of the Underdark with the city of Sshamath below the surface for players who choose to play as a drow, duergar, svirfneblin or tanarruk. The whole game world consists of at least 120-150 maps. Players and a big dungeon master team have already established a really complex role-play setting with various clans and guilds familiar from the Baldur's Gate game. The world is not static but keeps changing. There have even been some epic and really huge global events such as a war between Baldur's Gate and Amn (described in Forgotten Realms lore) half a year ago, which left Beregost completely razed (rebuilt now).

Q: How is gameplay in BG-TSCC?

A: Gameplay is somewhat similar to gameplay in mainstream MMORPG games. You create a character and explore, hunt monsters, do quests, buy and trade items to NPC shops or between players, join parties or solo some smaller and bigger boss monsters, participate in various events and quests organized by dungeon masters. Your character is stored on the server and remains for many years just like in commercial MMORPGs. An average player might probably remain interested at least for a year playing there but completely new players might stay for as long as five years. The only reason I have become somewhat bored after 15 months of playing a lot there is that I had played NWN 1 online for six years before I joined and many gameplay elements weren't new to me.

Q: How is role-playing in BG-TSCC?

A: One special thing they have is that sometimes characters automatically get RP XP for role-playing. The thing which impressed me most about role-play is that in the Underdark many people actually role-play in the real language of the drow (Siyo, nind telanth ilythiiri xanalress wun Har'oloth gaer). Role-playing between players and interaction between players and NPCS or monsters controlled by dungeon masters can be often quite deep and serious in BG-TSCC. One reason for this is that role-playing can actually bring power or different real consequences to player characters or be reflected in the world. In most online fantasy games role-playing is just empty talk between role-players but it never results or materializes in anything.

Q: Isn't NWN 2 a bad game for multiplayer?

A: As a veteran NWN 1 player I had negative prejudice towards NWN 2 but after I tried it in 2011, BG-TSCC impressed me so much that it was the only computer game I ever played in 2011-2012. I am waiting for BG-EE because Baldur's Gate games are my favourite single player games but BG-TSCC is the place to go for any BG fan who wants to experience Baldur's Gate as an MMORPG. The games sort of complete each other. You can play Baldur's Gate in single player and then you can continue your adventures in the multiplayer environment of BG-TSCC, though with another character and decades after the Bhaal spawn events.

Q: Isn't NWN 2 full of bugs for multiplayer?

A: I tried NWN 2 for the first time in closed beta test in 2005, then bought and played it for a while in 2005-2007. Many years ago NWN 2 was indeed horrible for multiplayer, significantly worse than NWN 1, though I did like the official single player campaign. However, in 2011 when I decided to try the BG-TSCC, I became extremely impressed with the multiplayer aspect of NWN 2. I cannot say for certain whether NWN 2 became so dramatically better due to all the patches between 2005-2009 or because the world of BG-TSCC is optimized really well and bugs removed.

Q: What is so impressive about BG-TSCC from technical viewpoint?

A: I was impressed because it is a world with 150 maps and 90% of them quite decent (knowing how hard it is to make good looking maps in NWN 2). I was also impressed that their server can handle 70 players simultaneously with surprisingly little lag and that during 12 months of playing there I experienced game crashes only 10-15 times in total and got stuck in some spot on a map only two times. All in all, really excellent even by NWN 1 multiplayer standards. It's also impressive that at least for me it runs without problems both on a really old computer built in 2003-2004 (with Windows XP) and on a very modern computer built in 2012 (with Windows 7).

All in all, it feels like a deluxe commercial MMORPG due to the quality of design of the world and enthusiasm of developers and their dungeon master team.

NWN 2 with all expansion packs (includes extra pack Mysteries of Westgate) for $19.99 at GoG.

NWN 1 and NWN 2 with all expansion packs for $29.99 at Gamestop.
http://www.gamestop.com/pc/games/dungeons-dragons-neverwinter-nights-complete/99052

If somebody is starting from scratch, the whole installation and patching process is much more simple than in NWN 1.

1. Install NWN 2.

2. Install Mask of Betrayer (and Storm of Zehir if you have it).

3. Run NWN2Launcher.exe. Click Update to patch the game to the final version released in 2009.

4. Launch the game. Click "Multiplayer". Type in some account name and some random password.

5. Choose "Join Internet Game", then select "Role-Playing" server section and select "Baldur's Gate: The Sword Coast Chronicles".

*Update to step 5*
Gamespy has stopped supporting many older games including NWN 1 and NWN 2. In order to play BGTSCC now you need to select "Multiplayer" and then use the "Direct Connect" button instead of the "Join Internet Game" button. Insert the IP address of the server, which is 208.94.245.10:5121. After this the server will be saved in the "History section" of multiplayer tab.

6. Connect to the server. All necessary files will be downloaded and sorted out in the right folders automatically. This stage can take a few hours even with fast Internet connection when you connect for the first time because there are at least 2-4 gigabytes of BGTSCC files.

7. Create character and play after downloads are finished.

This is not mentioned anywhere on the forums but players who don't have the Storm of Zehir expansion can take only standard base and prestige classes which came with NWN 2 and The Mask of Betrayer. Without The Storm of Zehir add-on It is not possible to take levels in custom prestige classes such as Dread Pirate, Black Flame Zealot, Whirling Dervish or Ghost-Faced Killer, and in certain maps there will be objects with "missing textures". Fortunately, there is still plenty of base and prestige classes to choose from, and 90% of maps do not contain any objects or textures from Storm of Zehir. Otherwise, you can play perfectly fine just with NWN 2 and MoTB without SoZ.

I'll start with Gwen, an Elven Priestess of Talos although I don't know how long she will live with her crippling low dexterity lol. She can barely equip herself and nearly takes her half an hour to do so. I took her first roll of 75, updates to come in the near future
