New love for the Fighter/Thief and the Potion of Magic Shielding

I finished an all Elven party run last night with an F/T, Kivan, Coran, Viconia, Secret NPC and Xan and it was awesome. Luckily aside from the occasional sniping, Viconia and Kivan never came to blows despite having them both as early as possible and never needing to drop them (with an 18 charisma, up to 20 after the nymph cloak).

And yeah, the f/t was killer. as soon as i was able to pick up the staff+3 and the sand thief ring, combined with some invisibility spells from xan and mr.b and DUHM and she was hitting for huge amounts of damage, possibly my new favourite class

and lastly the Potion of Magic Shielding (50% damage reduction from magic, all saving throws automatically successful). Now in all my playthroughs i'm something of a hoarder and i'll never use any potions or wands much, but i decided this playthrough to splash the cash and invest in the potions of magic shielding, blocking and protection. i used the PoMS against Aec and i smashed him first time, fairly easily, without even having to backstab. the f/t holds his attention, while the rest of the team kills the mage and the cult members, then we all pitch in and finish him. then sarevok, i probably could have solo'd with the PoMS and PoMB. the rest of the team stayed at the door and ambushed the mage when he teleported over and the f/t backstabbed with the staff of striking, sandthiefed, rinse and repeat.

tldr: f/t are awesome, potions of magic shielding and blocking makes anybody awesome.

Mr first time ... (several spoilers)

I just finished my first game of BG playing evil! To be fair, my CHARNAME was chaotic neutral, but my party was evil. My party was CHARNAME (gnome illusionist / cleric), Dorn, Kaigan, Imoen & Tiax. My plan was only four party members to level up CHARNAME faster, but once I hit the city, I decided to add Tiax to the mix. It was actually pretty fun. I've played ton's of BG over the years, but I've always played good. Generally, I hate losing reputation, so I was pretty surprised that my problem was keeping my rep high enough that the guards weren't always attacking me. There were lots of people that just had to die.

A few observations:

- Being evil is Expensive! Really expensive. The escalated price of the basic items aren't a big deal, but when you're paying $15,000 extra for a robe of the arch-magi, that's a lot of dough! This was the first time I've ever struggled with affording things.

- Imoen's loyalty knows no bounds. Regardless of how low my rep was, Imoen hung on there with me. She wasn't always happy, sometimes she was downright cranky. She even resorted to nasty name calling. I'm not sure what "mongering" is, but I am NOT doing it to sheep. I may be Riff Raff though.

- There's a lot of Kaigan love in the forums. Everyone always says "that guy can take a hit!" And it's a good thing he can take a hit, because until you get him some dexterity, he stands there like a pylon and gets pounded on. I could always just imagine cursing at him "You know, you can try and dodge right?" At least you don't have to use as much healing on him. Oh, and he has priorities right. I need an ale!

- Some of the rep stuff is just weird. I go to High Hedge, and slaughter Thalantyr's golems. Thalantyr get's pissy about that, so I have to kill him too. No reputation penalties yet. Then I figure, I've got Melicamp standing there watching everything, so I better off the only witness to my slaughter, and bam! -2 reputation. So, leaving a witness = no reputation loss while killing the only witness = reputation loss.

- I didn't know that there were different Bhaalspawn abilities depending on alignment. That was kind of cool, although I did miss the healing abilities.

The 75 roll No-Reload/No Resurrection Challenge

Not sure how much interest there will be in this but I'm throwing it out there nonetheless!!!

RULES
- You must use a non-edited roll of 75
- You can re-roll as many times as you like
- You may not min/max any stats or edit any abilities at all
- You may not resurrect any party members
- Core rules
- Update your progress in this thread, whether it be death or success!
- Try to roleplay your character as much as possible :)
- Have fun

I'll start with Gwen, an Elven Priestess of Talos although I don't know how long she will live with her crippling low dexterity lol. She can barely equip herself and nearly takes her half an hour to do so. I took her first roll of 75, updates to come in the near future

Tips on starting a new no-reload game?

I started a new no-reload game with a fighter/mage/thief and ended up getting trashed by that mage at the FOA. I was wondering if anybody had some advice on dealing with him.

While I'm not doing a solo playthrough, I didn't want to pick up xzar and montaron (good alignment) so I only had Imoen with me.

The problem was this: without cheesing by stealthing and just backstabbing the guy before he talks (I don't want to metagame) it was impossible to kill him before he casts charm and kills me due to the mirror image protection. Any ideas on how to deal with this? (would prefer tips that don't involve simply selecting a different class like an Inquisitor that's immune to charm)

Romance Reviews?

Any thoughts on the romances? I'm trying to decide if I want to go for the Neera romance with a male character, or the monk as a female character. I can't possibly see the monk as being interesting, but I havn't encountered him yet, so. I'm not even going to ask about the 'insane psychopathic half orc' romance, because I couldn't care less about that one.

Every day you should learn something new. What have you learned today?

I learned that.... The Cursed Sword of Berserking grants you the same immunities as Minsc's ability

I've also learned that... there IS a difference between the Black and Brown Bear shapeshifting forms (-1AC)

Fighter, Mage, Thief

Fighter, Mage, Thief - the holy trinity of RPG games.
Hitter, Caster, Trickster. Soldier, Tinker, Spy. Tank, Damage, Utility... I could go on.

Three basic classes, three basic styles of play. Because this is AD&D which split the usual Mage user to an Arcane and Divine, I've added a Cleric.
Which style of play defines you most?* Which class do you like the most and find the most interesting and fun to play?
What is YOUR game?

I would like to know.

* Notes: - if you prefer a dual/multi class, please choose the style, that is dominant. A F/T who backstabs a lot and places traps wherever possible has a different dynamic than a F/T who hacks everything to pieces and uses thief skills to just open locks and disarm traps. Please try to choose one of the four.
** T/C atrocities, please automatically choose 5th answer.

To roll, go to http://www.random.org/ Change the numbers from 1000-9999. Roll Twice, and create your character. You can store your best roll under Abilities.

Perhaps post your rolls/character to bump this Discussion? I know not all rolls will work out so make best with you can or reroll.

Just noticed new feature - "copy note"

Wow, I continue to be amazed and impressed at how well Overhaul is supporting our game. I just started a new run with the latest patch, and, as soon as I collected Gorion's correspondence with Elminster off his body, I noticed a new button that said "copy note."

So, I clicked it, and lo and behold, the text of the note appeared in my custom journal notes screen!

I think that that is so awesome! I've always carried around notes and books through the whole game, taking up precious inventory slots, because I wanted to be able to read through them later, and not risk accidentally throwing away a quest letter. Now, that is no longer a worry! Thanks, Overhaul, you guys are the best!

Pop culture references in BG

NPCs called 'Bub Snikt'... The 'Peter North' conversation... References to the development staff... And a lot more.

How generally do the old-time fans view these?

Fun easter-eggs that bring a knowing smile to your face?

Or pointless fourth-wall breaking silliness that detracts from immersion?

Just curious...

Help With Drulag's (possible spoilers...)

I'm going through a multiplayer session of Drulag's Tower and I can't get to all three of the golem things before Drulag's ghost brings you to the next area. I got the first two, the fear and who's fault it was, but i can't find the third. I read that it was supposed to be the statue in the room that had the spiders, but nothing is there and when i mouse over the statue mouse doesn't change like it did for the others. I'm playing the original in Tutu. Help please.

Will I run into trouble?

So I decided to create a new character actually using npc instead of creating my whole party

Protaganist
Human
Wizard Slayer
Lawful Good
Strength 18.65
Dexterty 18
Constitution 18
Intelligence 13
Wisdom 10
Charisma 18
(Got that on my third roll probably the best roll ever)

Hopefully I want gm in crossbow, long swords and single weapon style

Kahlid and Minsc will be my front line fighters while I'm picking people off with my crossbow from behind.
My main mage will be the lovely Neera and wild crazyness.
Jaheria will be my healer.
Imoen will be my thief and I plan to duel class her to mage when her lock pick, find traps reach 80. I don't really care for pick pocketing.
I know there will be a problem with Minsc and his witch, but I plan to kick Neera out briefly bring the witch in and have Minsc kill her. Than kick her dead body out and bring Neera back in. :)

So do you guys foresee a problem?

This may be old hat to folks, but I found a new way to engage in petty thievery today, and I thought I'd share.

When ever so politely acquiring the belongings from homes across the Sword Coast, simply opening a cabinet when in the view of the occupant usually results in an unwanted visit from the Flaming Fist or other assorted guards. One solution, of course, is to grab the belongings, and before the guards show up, hide in shadows, then waltz merrily from the building. Simply running out often won't work, as the guards may follow you into the streets.

However, there's another way, made easier when you have a full party. If a home has a floor plan with separate rooms or even some barrier of some sort of another, then you can wait until the occupant wanders into an area where they can't see the cabinet or chest with their precious belongings. At that point, all you need to do is swoop in with everybody in your party that isn't a thief, and block off the occupants exit from their present position. In order to engage them in lively conversation, of course.

Meanwhile, your erstwhile thief is now free to rifle through the occupants' belongings at leisure. Once every good has been obtained, simply leave the building, with no guards to trouble you on the way.

There are a few catches with this technique. If the occupant happens to see the pilfered chest on your way, if you tarry too long, then the guards might be called.

The strangest catch to this was when I was in the Hall of Wonders at night. Imoen had raided the Hall's wares, as we... uhhh... kept watch... for Alora. Afterwards, Alora asked to join our merry band. We acquiesced, just to humor her for the moment, and removed Imoen from the party. Once we did, all the alarms in the Hall went off, because our pilfering had been spotted. Apparently Imoen, no longer in our party, was now somebody who could view our stealing, and thus the guards were alerted.

Anyhow, it takes a bit longer to wait for the occupants to move into the proper spots, and some home layouts don't have a spot they can move, or the occupants don't move at all. But otherwise, this works out pretty well. Enjoy!

Phandalyn the Paladin *Spoiler*

I'm just curious if there is any way around the whopping 9 point reputation loss for killing Phandalyn in baldurs gate?

basically he's a Paladin that will attack you on site if he detects any evil members in your party

he must be one of the only guys who initiates a fight and causes such drastic rep loss

All you need to do is sling, sling, sling...

$

Once you get to Baldur's Gate, your back-line, sling-wielders will get an option with slings. The sling +1, which is +1 THAC0 and +1 damage, and the sling of unerring accuracy, which is +2 THAC0, with no damage adjustment. Later in the game, another better sling may be available, but at this point in the game, which would you prefer? A bit more accuracy? Or a bit more damage when you do hit?
