BGEE really isn't what I expected haha

Honestly hearing we were getting a full HD 1920x1080 resolution I kinda expected baldurs gate 1 with the gameplay and story intact but the graphics to get boosted to like NWN or Dragon Age 1 levels or at the very least to BG2 levels.

Got it at launch but only played for a little bit as had issues with party controls so yeah asking for help in the other section for that.

Help with Return to Flaming Fist Compound (Warning: Spoilers Within)

Okay, I killed the Iron Throne crew in Candlekeep and am now back in Baldur's Gate. When I approach the compound, the Flaming Fist take me inside to confront Angelo. Angelo throws me in jail, where I find Neb, do his terrible math problem and pop up outside.

But once outside, I'm being attacked by Flaming Fist enforcers. If I kill them my reputation goes in the toilet. If I don't attack them they are following me around everywhere.

What exactly am I supposed to do here? What am I doing wrong?

There is an excellent online Baldur's Gate game out there.

If you ever wanted to experience a really decent MMORPG version of the good old Baldur's Gate game from 1998, the best choice would be to try Baldur's Gate: The Sword Coast Chronicles. It is the best and most popular persistent world ever created for Neverwinter Nights 2, existing for 3-4 years now and still very much alive and thriving probably for many more years to come. What makes it very alluring to Baldur's Gate fans is that most of the game world has been recreated based on the game maps in Baldur's Gate 1.

I will do my best to describe BG-TSCC. Some information about me first. In the past I have played Baldur's Gate 1, Baldur's Gate 2, Icewind Dale, and Neverwinter Nights 1 in single player and six years in multiplayer. I discovered BG-TSCC and started playing it a year and a half ago.

I guess it might be best to provide the description in a form of a FAQ.

--------------------------

Q: What's in there for fans of the good old Baldur's Gate game released in 1998?

A: Developers recreated the world and game maps from the world and maps of the original Baldur's Gate game and the results are quite impressive in my opinion. If you have played the old Baldur's Gate game, you will certainly recognize many places. The world reaches north of Baldur's Gate to Troll Claw Hills and to the south through Friendly Arms Inn, Beregost and Nashkel through Cloudpeak Mountains to Amn, plus there is an entire big world of the Underdark with the city of Sshamath below the surface for players who choose to play as a drow, duergar, svirfneblin or tanarruk. The whole game world consists of at least 120-150 maps. Players and a big dungeon master team have already established a really complex role-play setting with various clans and guilds familiar from the Baldur's Gate game. The world is not static but keeps changing. There have even been some epic and really huge global events such as a war between Baldur's Gate and Amn (described in Forgotten Realms lore) half a year ago, which left Beregost completely razed (rebuilt now).

Q: How is gameplay in BG-TSCC?

A: Gameplay is somewhat similar to gameplay in mainstream MMORPG games. You create a character and explore, hunt monsters, do quests, buy and trade items to NPC shops or between players, join parties or solo some smaller and bigger boss monsters, participate in various events and quests organized by dungeon masters. Your character is stored on the server and remains for many years just like in commercial MMORPGs. An average player might probably remain interested at least for a year playing there but completely new players might stay for as long as five years. The only reason I have become somewhat bored after 15 months of playing a lot there is that I had played NWN 1 online for six years before I joined and many gameplay elements weren't new to me.

Q: How is role-playing in BG-TSCC?

A: One special thing they have is that sometimes characters automatically get RP XP for role-playing. The thing which impressed me most about role-play is that in the Underdark many people actually role-play in the real language of the drow (Siyo, nind telanth ilythiiri xanalress wun Har'oloth gaer). Role-playing between players and interaction between players and NPCS or monsters controlled by dungeon masters can be often quite deep and serious in BG-TSCC. One reason for this is that role-playing can actually bring power or different real consequences to player characters or be reflected in the world. In most online fantasy games role-playing is just empty talk between role-players but it never results or materializes in anything.

Q: Isn't NWN 2 a bad game for multiplayer?

A: As a veteran NWN 1 player I had negative prejudice towards NWN 2 but after I tried it in 2011, BG-TSCC impressed me so much that it was the only computer game I ever played in 2011-2012. I am waiting for BG-EE because Baldur's Gate games are my favourite single player games but BG-TSCC is the place to go for any BG fan who wants to experience Baldur's Gate as an MMORPG. The games sort of complete each other. You can play Baldur's Gate in single player and then you can continue your adventures in the multiplayer environment of BG-TSCC, though with another character and decades after the Bhaal spawn events.

Q: Isn't NWN 2 full of bugs for multiplayer?

A: I tried NWN 2 for the first time in closed beta test in 2005, then bought and played it for a while in 2005-2007. Many years ago NWN 2 was indeed horrible for multiplayer, significantly worse than NWN 1, though I did like the official single player campaign. However, in 2011 when I decided to try the BG-TSCC, I became extremely impressed with the multiplayer aspect of NWN 2. I cannot say for certain whether NWN 2 became so dramatically better due to all the patches between 2005-2009 or because the world of BG-TSCC is optimized really well and bugs removed.

Q: What is so impressive about BG-TSCC from technical viewpoint?

A: I was impressed because it is a world with 150 maps and 90% of them quite decent (knowing how hard it is to make good looking maps in NWN 2). I was also impressed that their server can handle 70 players simultaneously with surprisingly little lag and that during 12 months of playing there I experienced game crashes only 10-15 times in total and got stuck in some spot on a map only two times. All in all, really excellent even by NWN 1 multiplayer standards. It's also impressive that at least for me it runs without problems both on a really old computer built in 2003-2004 (with Windows XP) and on a very modern computer built in 2012 (with Windows 7).

All in all, it feels like a deluxe commercial MMORPG due to the quality of design of the world and enthusiasm of developers and their dungeon master team.

If somebody is starting from scratch, the whole installation and patching process is much more simple than in NWN 1.

1. Install NWN 2.

2. Install Mask of Betrayer (and Storm of Zehir if you have it).

3. Run NWN2Launcher.exe. Click Update to patch the game to the final version released in 2009.

4. Launch the game. Click "Multiplayer". Type in some account name and some random password.

5. Choose "Join Internet Game", then select "Role-Playing" server section and select "Baldur's Gate: The Sword Coast Chronicles".

*Update to step 5*
Gamespy has stopped supporting many older games including NWN 1 and NWN 2. In order to play BGTSCC now you need to select "Multiplayer" and then use the "Direct Connect" button instead of the "Join Internet Game" button. Insert the IP address of the server, which is 208.94.245.10:5121. After this the server will be saved in the "History section" of multiplayer tab.

6. Connect to the server. All necessary files will be downloaded and sorted out in the right folders automatically. This stage can take a few hours even with fast Internet connection when you connect for the first time because there are at least 2-4 gigabytes of BGTSCC files.

7. Create character and play after downloads are finished.

This is not mentioned anywhere on the forums but players who don't have the Storm of Zehir expansion can take only standard base and prestige classes which came with NWN 2 and The Mask of Betrayer. Without The Storm of Zehir add-on It is not possible to take levels in custom prestige classes such as Dread Pirate, Black Flame Zealot, Whirling Dervish or Ghost-Faced Killer, and in certain maps there will be objects with "missing textures". Fortunately, there is still plenty of base and prestige classes to choose from, and 90% of maps do not contain any objects or textures from Storm of Zehir. Otherwise, you can play perfectly fine just with NWN 2 and MoTB without SoZ.

I purchased the windows and ipad version on day zero to support your company.
This was five month ago.

I asked 5 times about the translation status of the ipad version over the last few month - and I did not get even
a glimpse of an information.

Why should you? I, your customer idiot, allready paid, right? You're working on BG2 to make fresh money.

I am very dissapointed and 'll warn every fellow gamer to buy bg1 or 2 and not to hear on your shallow promises.
Next time be honest

Is it so hard to keep customers informed?

Narbucchad's Demise Wizard's Staff

I made quite interesting discovery today while browsing in Near Infinity. I found wizard's staff named Narbucchad's Demise under the name PSTAFM0.ITM (and PSTAFM0A etc.), which I have never heard of before. It has magic ranged attack (magic missile projectile) and also can shoot magic missiles. And most importantly has entirely new icons and animation (however has no inventory animation).

Modding staffs with magic ranged attacks for my mages was one of the first things I did with my BG:EE because it wasn't possible before, but I had no idea that there was already such a staff. I wonder how long it has been there.

Baldur's Gate: A Journal attempt in novelistic style. {{}}

It is a near Universal axiom expounded by all the Ancient Doctors of Literature that great care should be taken in fashioning the first sentence of any opus, even one of such a humble form as this, a Journal. I disagree, holding that the second, in moving away or outward from the first, reveals without insisting upon the point somewhat of the Nature of Life itself.

Within that moving away and outward, what some have called the Universal "On", shadow of the Demiurge, is where I deem our interest should be lodge. A difficult housing indeed but, even so, I have endeavored to begin. And you shall be the Judge.

I remember first strangely, a simple rabbit in a dewy morn, small and grey, that roused me from a low crouch deep in some thicket where, mindless and staring, I had endured the long, slow gathering of light, as Day, unstoppable in its course, unfolded. The rabbit nosed its way about, some 20-30 yards away ~to my left as I looked to the South~ as if nothing was amiss. As if Meaning itself was still an easy assumption. Hopping softly about as it nibbled, now here, now there and briskly looked about.

It occurred to me that if I could carefully make my way to the road that must surely lie not far ahead, without disturbing the rabbit unduly, then that would be a good beginning to what might prove a very long day. But it was not so easy. My normally limber and quite capable physique was a clenched mass of tension and the newly purchased Splint Mail, which had pleased my vanity so greatly just yesterday, was still an unfamiliar challenge to movement. And the new Longbow, a quiver-full of arrows and last, but not least, Bessie, my War Hammer.

In spite of myself, I almost laughed out loud, forgetting a moment, the pain, the fear, the emptiness... Bessie! I had actually christened the Hammer ~with water from Oghma's Temple, no less. Bessie..!

And I became calm. My ability to focus returned.

Surveying the ground I picked out a likely route and moved forward, imagining myself to be like the Rangers I had enjoyed reading of in my latter years at Candlekeep. I actually covered a good 15-20 feet before the rabbit in question, deigned to notice me. It did not flee, merely moving somewhat further away with what seemed a deliberate nonchalance. And it then returned to the business of eating...

I cannot convey how strange that was! A clear joy took hold of me after such hours of terror endured in the night. I forged ahead to the road, The Lion's Way, which was indeed close by and turned to look once more for my disdainful brother, the rabbit, as if to bid farewell. But it was gone and my seized gaze soared over the forest verge as if an eagle had taken flight from my forehead to the place where Gorion's body now lay.

Alas, for Lord Gorion, Master of Candlekeep Fortress, Guardian of Lore, mighty of mind and magic, now, in a moment, gone beyond this frame called Life. For Gorion was surely dead. I shuddered to remember how helpless he seemed at the last, his magic exhausted, having vanquished all of his foes -but one, a tall weirdly armored figure who felled my Foster-Father of 20 years with a single powerful blow from his sword.

The spell or instinct which had held me transfixed in the hiding place from which I had witnessed the furious battle, knowing myself profoundly outclassed, collapsed at once and, heedless of danger, I fled, judging that, if there were others unseen watching for me, my best hope lay in immediate escape and distance.

How do I do it?

I assumed it would be trivial-ish by endgame, but he basically kills everyone in one hit and I hit him maybe once for 5 damage during the course of all of that. He saves to all spells that are savable, mostly.

Is it just a matter of resets, or is there a win-button, where "win-button" does not mean "surround him with removed party members to trap him, then sling him to death."

What is the most powergaming party that you can think of?

two different groups of posts
1) multiplayer created party by player. What classes/races (and items)
2) charname + npc's. What npc's
-this is not 1 vs 2 but creating 2 different threads for 1 purpose is silly
-bg2 tob exp limit
-no mods

and why is this the most powergaming?

for example
F/M/T half-elf - like kensai mage but +100dmg with backstab
Kensai13/Mage - i think everyone know why kensai/mage
cleric/specjalist mage - healer who is almost immortal
mage slayer13/mage - antimage
edwin - most spells

npc's
F/M/T op op
sarevok dualed to mage op
edwin - op op op
aerie - op multi
keldorn - op dispell
Cernd - SS f yeah

like you can see I prefer magic :)

How to RP a follower of Hoar?

Hi everyone, I'm looking for some insight in how you would RP a follower of Hoar.

Which class, race, weapons, attributes, etc, would you suggest?

I'm far from a D&D expert so I only know what I've been reading online. I'm thinking either a human or half-orc as a F/C or maybe F/T with lawful neutral as an alignment. I would then be out seeking revenge during the main plot. Would a dwarf or halfling ever be a follower of Hoar?

I would really appreciate any recommendations on how you would play this character. Would PC even know of Hoar having been stuck in Candlekeep?

Thanks!

BGEE was just released on Steam

Baldurs Gate Heal/Hurt :D (ROUND 36 START!)

-IMPORTANT EDIT: THE CURRENT ROUND WILL BE DISPLAYED ON THE THREAD TITLE. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR VOTING IS CONSISTENT WITH THE CURRENT ROUND'S CONDITIONS.-

Okay so this has been done both on the Spellhold Studios forums and the Giant in the Playground forums in the past and both times, it was really cool and fun.

Okay, so basically, this is a game of Heal/Hurt with the Baldur's Gate characters.

The rules are simple--
Basically you vote for which character you want to heal and which character you want to hurt. Each vote counts as a +1 or -1 for that character. They all start with ten HP, but if healed they can go over 10. Once a character reaches zero, they die. The last one standing wins. Periodically, you will be asked to vote for characters to add to the roster, as we need to keep it at a manageable size so we can't start with all of them. The two characters with the most votes will be added. BG1, BG2:SoA and BG2: ToB are all fair game to draw characters from. The two with the most votes for that will be added. In certain rounds there may be special rules, which will be explained for that round. Once characters get enough heals, the slayer mode comes into play, which I will explain once it happens.
Each round lasts from several hours to a day, depending on the rate at which posts are made.

So, may the most awesome character win!

ROUND 1:

Our starting roster, since I am feeling too uncreative to hand-pick characters right now, will be the same as the starting roster for the Spellhold Studios game of Heal/Hurt (even if it is very...BG2. Remember, you can add BG1 characters as well with your votes.)

-Roster-
Character: ------------HP ------Change ----Slayer Mode?
Minsc-----------------10 --------------------- No
Boo ------------------10 --------------------- No
Jaheira -------------- 10 ----------------------No
Imoen ----------------10---------------------- No
Irenicus --------------10 -----------------------No
Ellesime --------------10----------------------- No
Melissan-------------- 10 ----------------------No
Lilarcor ---------------10 ----------------------No
Cernd ----------------10 -----------------------No
Aerie -----------------10 ----------------------No
Haer'Dalis -------------10----------------------- No
Nalia ------------------10---------------------- No
Anomen---------------- 10 ---------------------No
Saemon Havarian -------10 ---------------------No
Valgyar ----------------10---------------------- No
Viconia -----------------10 ---------------------No
Edwin -------------------10 ---------------------No

RULES FOR THIS ROUND:
-This round, you are allowed one heal, and one hurt.

-This round, you should vote for two characters you want to see enter the fray! (i.e., guys that aren't on the roster yet but you want them to be, either so you can heal them and watch them win, or so you can beat their asses into the ground with your hurts)

Just so everyone knows the voting format, I will start:

Heal: Imoen

Hurt: Ellesime

Vote: Xan, Alora

The Lost Source Artwork

Just finished reading through Trent's interview at Gamasutra: http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/190432/postmortem_overhaul_games_.php

A really good read. Something that stuck out to me was the tragedy of the lost BG artwork. When I think of the truly majestic game that the EE could have been in HD I genuinely feel sad - like the gaming world lost something wonderful that didn't yet exist. I love the EE, don't get me wrong, but it is in some ways a shadow of what it could have been, and I wish we could travel to an alternate universe where the art still exists :)

So .. the question is. Artwork for BG2 / IWD / IWDII / Planescape? Has any of it survived? :(

More kits please!

I love the new kits that came in the last patch...I was hoping for another patch very soon that has many more kits in it. Since Baldur's Gate 2 EE will be more months until release, I need something more to occupy me. I'm hoping for some new kits and replaying BG1EE a couple times. I want a new Ranger kit. That would be nice, and perhaps another Druid kit. But multiple kits would be ideal.
