Anyone notice that the dialogue with Dorn changes based on your intelligence? I'm discussing the dialogue during the ambush. With high intel you recognize him as a blackguard with low to average you don't. I found this interesting, and am now wondering if dialogue anywhere else changes at all.

The no reload challenge (spoiler warning)
One of the most fun thing to do in BG is to play with no reload.
The point of the thread is for you to describe your attempts (failed or successful)
I'll start with mine (i just list the significative attempts, not the ones in which i died after 5 minutes). All these playthrough were on core rules difficulty (save for leveling, to get max hp)
- Fighter/mage/thief. Solo. Died in baldur's gate (level 5/5/6) from the mages upstairs of the magical shop (forgot their were casting horror...)
- Berserker. Solo. Died at level 6 from an ankheg, ambushing me while resting
- Inquisitor. In group of 4 (imoen, minsc, viconia). Still in progress (in cloakwoods)
- Berserker / mage (dual 7/8). Solo. Sill in progress (in catacombs at candlekeep). I should succeed it with this one (unless i do something dumb), as he is now 7/8 and almost unkillable (berserker kit is awesome)
My next try will be a solo sorcerer.
Some advices for those who want to try it :
- i find solo play easier than group play (as defense is paramount in no reload, and much easier to get on one character than on 6)
- very good knowledge of the game is necessary.
- when playing solo, never roll to save against a deadly effect (paralysis, horror, charm....) -> you need to get immunities (potions, items, abilities, spells) or you will die.
- always have an invisibility potion ready, as a panic button

Try dual-classing all NPCs for whom it is possible in the same game (spoilers)
It's interesting to note that there are enough tomes available to dual all of the dual-classable NPCs in the game. Hence the "NPC Dual-class challenge" wherein you dual-class all of your NPCs. The roster includes:
Imoen - no tome needed to dual to Mage
Shar-Teel - no tome needed to dual to Thief
Xzar - 1 Wis tome to dual to Cleric; or the Dex tome to dual to Thief
Dynaheir - 2 Wis tomes to dual to Cleric
Branwen - Dex tome to dual to Thief
Safana - Int tome to dual to Mage
For reference sake here are the tome locations.
Some rules of thumb:
- Obviously you can't take them all, just five among the six.
- You can't dual Branwen and Safana until you reach BG city. Ditto for Xzar if he's dualing to Thief. (Int and Dex tomes are in the big city.)
- If Xzar is dualing to Cleric and he and Dynaheir are both included in the party, then Dyna isn't able to dual until you return to Candlekeep, which is very late in the game.
- You can also dual Xzar to Thief with the Dex tome. Then you're not taking Branwen (as there is only one Dex tome). In this case you're dualing Xzar in Chapter 5, and dualing him to Thief. This frees up 2 Wis tomes for Dynaheir to dual to Cleric before entering BG city.
This game would definitely be a challenge. There's a bit of a tank deficit. Not that you can't beat the game without tanks. Anyway, you'd probably want the PC to have the ability to tank, and perhaps also to heal. In BG:EE you're limited in the number of creatures you can summon, so magic is going to play a big role. And of course, depending on when you dual the characters they're climbing through low levels of their new class with original class deactivated.
Who would you assemble? When would you dual them? Would your PC also dual-class? Which classes for the PC? Inquiring minds want to know.

Trouble with voices
I've encountered some problem while adding my own voice set to Baldur's gate 1. I know where to place the .wav files and I know how to name them correctly, but for an unknown reason, I seem unable to make the voice sets work properly. Only one sound of the set actually work (XXXXXXXi.wav : Action Acknowledgement 1) and the voice sets are not available at all in multiplayer games.
Anybody had the same problem? How did you solve these issues?

decisions, decisions... trying to decide plan for my next game... (spoilers)
Apologies from the getgo that this is such a longwinded post. Hopefully you can skim it without too much trouble.
I've got three basic ideas in my head about what my next BG:EE game will be. Maybe you all can help me decide!
Whichever game I pick it will be with SCS:EE installed.
There are two main character builds I'm thinking of trying. One of them includes a concept for the entire party. The other character build is a little more free form as to who else is in the party (any assortment of NPCs and/or other characters I might create.)
And finally I want to try a particular "RP concept" game that would bring a lot of interesting twists, turns, and unexpected challenges.
Dart Hurling Fighter 3/Mage
This is primarily going to be a human Fighter who takes out mages with darts. I'd dual-class to Mage because I think I'll likely get bored using just a ranged weapon Fighter. With a F/M I can mix some spells in along with the ranged attacks.
Hurling Darts with High Mastery (++++) and three attacks per round, should be pretty devastating against enemy wizards. Especially using Darts of Stunning and Wounding. I'll Haste or use oils speed liberally.
(I'm thinking also to install the BG:EE "Need a Shuriken?" mod to this game, just to test them out.)
I'll have plenty of spell slots as a generalist Mage. And I'd like access to all schools.
High Mastery in Darts comes at human Fighter 3/Mage 6 (40,000 XP) which is only 8000 XP more than a plain Fighter would require. For me, that's well worth that cost to be able to cast spells.
The other two weapons profs at character creation will go into Axe so that I can use either a) the magical throwing axe that returns to the user's hand, and, b) launch some surprise attacks against mages while invisible using Bala's Axe alongside the party's Thieves.
This game I'd leave open to assembling any sort of party. I've got no plan in mind for that with this guy.
Dagger & Axe Wielding Wizard Slayer 3/Thief
This too is a mage-killer build. Early in the game he'd dual-wield Axes +1. As we know, with a Wizard Slayer each successful hit reduces the enemy mage's chance to cast by 10%.
I'll eventually have him dual-wielding:
- Bala's Axe (each successful hit causes Miscast Magic, i.e., 80% chance of spell failure)
- the new Golden Axe +1 (each successful hit brings 10% chance of casting Dispel Magic on target).
With this build I figured I might get bored with just a plain fighter. So dual-classing to Thief is mainly to add some flavor. But also it works quite well tactically, since the stealth ability gives him the vital element of surprise against mages.
At Wizard Slayer 3/Thief 4 (that's only 9000 XP, mind you) he'd have
Axe +++
Two Weapon Style +++
Dagger +
Single Weapon Style +
2.5 attacks per round dual-wielding
THAC0 main hand: 11
THAC0 main hand: 13
and backstab multiplier x3.
This character would launch attacks with the Dagger of Venom (single weapon). Then he'd follow up by switching to dual-wielded axes. I expect most mages will probably explode when backstabbed. He can then target other spellcasters or take on the tanks with his axes. The axes will be good for heavily armored enemy clerics.
At Thief 8 I could put the last remaining weapons prof into either Dagger or Axe. By Thief 9 he'll end up with a backstab multiplier x4. But even before that, as noted, with the multiplier x 3 he'll probably chunk most mages outright with his backstabs anyway. So I may put the final prof in Axe for when he turns his attention to the tanks.
With this character I think I would create my own MP party of characters and try a run without using any arcane magic. To round out the party I'd have
Inquisitor
Berserker
Barbarian
Assassin
Cleric of Talos
"Let the Fates Decide" Concept Game
I play a lot of games where I do the same things every time. I'm doing that by rote, basically.
In this game I wouldn't do that. Instead I'd use some simple means to decide Yes or No: such as having a deck of playing cards at hand, and if the next card turned over is a red suit that's a Yes, and a black suit then it's a no.
I'd be selective about what I do this for. Not every little thing. Just as the mood strikes me.
I'd extend this a little to more complex choices. Eg, if I want to go exploring the wilderness, for which direction to travel I'd roll a d4 where each die number represents a cardinal direction.
For example, I could use this to determine whether I'd initiate dialogue with a joinable NPC. Then turn a card over again re: whether to take his or her quest. Who to drop from the party in order to add the new NPC? Roll a d6 (reroll if it's a 1; the other die numbers represent the order that each NPC joined the party).
So this sort of game would force some interesting strategies in combat, depending on who is in the party.
Now that I think about it, this game cries out to be led by a Chaotic Neutral Wild Mage main character. :)

"Let the Fates Decide" Game Journal
I've started a game that will be determined much by chance. For a great many decisions I'm turning a deck of playing cards to answer yes or no, such chat a red suit equals yes and a black suit equals no. For other types of questions I'm rolling dice. Eg, what direction might I go exploring? Roll a d4 where each number equals a cardinal direction. And so on.
So I figured I would play a Diviner. Seems fitting from a roleplaying standpoint. The dice were pretty good to me after 5 rolls.
Str 12

He scribes Blind, Identify and Sleep, memorizing the latter two.
Alright, I'm initially just testing this out to see if I really want to do it. From just outside the door of the Candlekeep Inn I roll a d4 which determines go North. Righto. Of course I run directly into Phlydia. Do I talk with her? I turn over a red card. So yes. She asks me to look for her book. Do I want to do it? I turn over another red card. So sure thing, Phlydia, I'll fetch your book.
I do this in earnest, roleplaying as if I'm really looking for the thing. (No dice rolls here, just looking where one would normally think to search.) And that takes me into the house where Shank is waiting. I had no weapons. I had Sleep memorized... but I figure, look, I'm a Diviner! What the hell do I know about fighting some guy who's trying to kill me? So I get the hell out of there.
I run towards a Watcher in front of the inn, assuming he'll do his job. Can you guess what happens? Bingo. He ignores the homicidal maniac on my tail. (Wth?) So I run into the inn. (Maybe Firebeard will help!) Again, they don't seem concerned in the slightest that a madman is chasing me around with a knife. (Hmm, maybe I wasn't so popular there in Candlkeep growing up.)
I run into the Candlekeep library garden, in the hope that either Tethtoril or Gorion will protect me. Shank is in hot pursuit. I run straight through the Chanters in a panic. They immediately scatter like a flock of frightened birds. That elicits a laugh right there. And for just a moment I seem to be outrunning my attacker. Maybe a Watcher finally responded! So I look back to see what's going on.
I actually just caught a glimpse of the Voice of the West whacking Shank with his staff. You see my Diviner there basically staring in disbelief.
So anyway, yeah, this game is definitely on.

Ugh... Level Up Changes and NPC Minimum Level When Acquired
I was unpleasantly surprised when I went to Nashkel and discovered that upon picking up Edwin, he was level 2 instead of level 1. This is despite the fact that while my main character had leveled, I had yet to level up (she still showed level 1). In the old game, you were considered your previous level until you applied the changes. Now it seems its based on EXP total. I guess its intended... blah!

A 2 Man Party
I just finished Planescape Torment with Morte (fighter) and Nameless One (thief/fighter). It was not too bad as I gained extra experience from wisdom and low party numbers. I had a fun time and I was wondering if the same type of setup can be worked in this game. Ive already beaten this game once as a fighter/thief who mostly used cheap tactics. This time I was wondering if something like that setup can work.
However, Baldurs Gate 1 is a much harder game than PS:T, so will last boss fight prove too tough if I use my diversion tactics? I usually like to take a tank (morte for this example) and deck him out with protections/armor boosting and other stuff, let him engage the main group of enemies and have my character fight next to morte while he is getting hit. Its worked all the time and positioning the right way can cause my character to land higher damaging blows while morte is landing smaller ones and taking less damage.
Would that possible character scenario work in this game. Ive heard that summoning creatures helps with smaller parties. Thanks for any help.

Has anyone had a non-magic Katana or Ninja-To /Wakazashi break on them?
I was wondering if anyone has had a non-magic Katana or other "eastern" weapon (i.e. Ninja-To and Wakazashi) break? If you look in NearInfinity these all have the "breakable" flag set, but others have claimed that whether a weapon breaks or not in BGEE is handled in a different way and that these "eastern" weapons do not break - is this true or has anyone experienced any of these breaking?
I've certainly experienced non-magic scimitars breaking, but none of the others yet, though I've not used Katanas much. Given that some ogre mages now drop katanas, I'm considering using them for a character concept I have...

The 75 roll No-Reload/No Resurrection Challenge
Not sure how much interest there will be in this but I'm throwing it out there nonetheless!!!
RULES
- You must use a non-edited roll of 75
- You can re-roll as many times as you like
- You may not min/max any stats or edit any abilities at all
- You may not resurrect any party members
- Core rules
- Update your progress in this thread, whether it be death or success!
- Try to roleplay your character as much as possible :)
- Have fun
I'll start with Gwen, an Elven Priestess of Talos although I don't know how long she will live with her crippling low dexterity lol. She can barely equip herself and nearly takes her half an hour to do so. I took her first roll of 75, updates to come in the near future

Backstabbing, Role playing & Metagaming
I have a hard time using backstabbing in BG. I mean, I've done it, and it can be devastating, but I have a hard time deciding to do it.
I get the idea of hiding in shadows, and scouting ahead. But I can't really backstab many of the adversaries I find while scouting unless I'm doing some pretty serious metagaming. The vast majority of adversaries aren't hostile until after some sort of interaction with my party. I know they are going to attack, but my thief doesn't know that.
Then, from a role playing perspective, it always seems a bit off if my thief runs away to find a spot to hide while the rest of the party is actively engaged in combat. Yeah, it might be for the greater good if he/she can hide, and then come back and deliver a devastating backstab, but it still seems wrong.
How do you make backstabbing work for you? Do you repeatedly hide and stab in the heat of battle? Do you have your rogue hidden in the shadows before every encounter, just in case it turns hostile? Or do you just metagame it, and backstab the baddies before the party interaction?

Would you be interested to Buy NPC followers that didn’t make it or died in BG2 From BGEE Store Shop
This got me thinking if you play BGEE you notice that in the game there is a store shop that you can or could buy future BGEE content. Like new portrait or new NPC followers.
Now the question is wouldn’t it be great if Overhoul Games used this feature in future BGEE2 to sell us NPC followers that never made it to BG2 from BG1 (or Died in BG2 in front of you Like Safana,Tiax and so on ) or didn’t make it Like Shar-Te, Ski, Alora and the rest
store shop future would help Overhoul to gain more money and used it to pay their own employers, hiring Voice actors and writers for the BG Followers who died (but now can be resurrected cause you bought that NPC follower in Store shop and now she or he has a story why she/he joins you) or those who didn’t make it to BG2 from BG1.

100% MR in BG2
I was wondering if it is possible to get to 100% Magic Resistance by the time I get to BG2. It's always something I wanted to try but it's been years before I gave it a shot. Can anyone tell me if it's possible with a thief with UAI. I'd rather do it without Carsomyr. I was also thinking of taking a Wizard Slayer through BGEE to Thief to get an extra 15% MR or so if I can't get to 100% with only items.
Also, has anyone actually done this? How useful is it? I picture my 100% MR to allow me to brush of liches and Fire Giants. Is that actually the case?
Thanks!

The Ethics of Opening a Door
Dear Bhaalspawn, if you are roleplaying a lawful good character do you believe that it is ethically or morally correct to unlock a locked door to a house for example in Beregost or Nashkel?
While the action could be perceived as a thief breaking into a house, the conundrum is in some circumstances you then receive a quest that if completed provides benefits to the inhabitants of those houses e.g. finding Joseph's ring for example.
Thoughts & opinions welcome!
