Maximum spells per level: Worth following?

After a lot of hours playing, I just realized that the reason why it was so difficult to find new spells for Haer' Dalis, Aerie and Jan is... That they've already reached their maximum number of spells (11) in most levels! This was so frustrating, I've spent hours carefully checking all the spell stores looking for the green highlight that indicates that a spell is available for them to learn.

Had I been aware that they had reached their limits, I might have removed the less useful spell in each level to make sure that the game highlights all the spells they don't have. However, I'm starting to wonder if even that is a good idea. I mean, at this stage (I'm currently beginning ToB) they have already filled up half of their spell levels. This means that, in order to keep the green highligt useful, each time I go to a store I need to fully review each of their spell levels, check if it has already reached the 11 spells limit, and if it has, decide which one of their current spells is the less useful one and remove it just to reactivate the green highlighter. That's so much micro, and not a lot of fun!

I think that a mod would be very helpful here. Something like an improved highlighter, which, apart from the current green and red highlights, uses a third one, say, amber. The amber highlight means that your wizard doesn't know that spell but they have already reached their spell limit for that level, so you'll have to get rid of an old spell if you want to learn this new one. On top of that, it might also give you a warning each time learning a new spell means you have reached the limit. And also let you know in the spell book the levels that have reached the limits already (by greying those out, for instance). Such a mod would save hours of micro. Unfortunately, AFAIK nothing like that has been done. I'd love to do it myself, but I'm just starting to learn the ropes of modding, so such a mod is most likely way above my current modding level.

Until such a mod is created, I'm thinking that the best I can do is just using The Tweaks Anthology to remove the limit of spells per level altogether in order to save myself hours of boring micro.

Share your custom parties

I made a custom party that I intend to use throughout the entire trilogy which I hope is balanced and not over powered. Keeping each characters stats to something similar to those of an NPC you would find perhaps. Share your custom parties that you've played through or one that you intend to use and import into BG2:EE. Tell us how you made them to play, or what theme you wanted to use. I wanted to create a party where I had one of each race, the full spectrum of alignments with a variety of roles. Tank, off tank, 2 ranged dps, a melee dps, 2 thieves, loremaster, disabler, party buffer, healer, leader, offensive mage, offensive priest. To have each character wield different weapons, 1 sharp and 1 blunt eventually where applicable. To have nearly each character wear different armour types. Tomes that are spread out equally. Used mainly as a support for whatever the situation requires. Primarily serves as ranged but in tougher fights, uses some party buffs such as Haste and Invisibility 10' Radius. Will cast self buffs such as Improved Invisibility, Stoneskin, Strength etc before making the initial backstab. Retreats to ranged once he's accomplished it. Severon will also be the main thief, putting skill points into Lockpick, Find Traps and Stealth. He'll be the character that uses the DEX tome. Image may be NSFW.

Grakas Half-Orc Chaotic Evil Barbarian STR 19 DEX 15 CON 16 INT 7 WIS 9 CHA 8 Axe: ++ Two Weapon Style: ++ Grakas is the melee damage dealer of the group. Does nothing else but charge in, tearing enemies limb from limb which he does well at. His Rage ability will help ensuring that there's always pressure on the enemy spellcaster. He'll get the STR tome. Image may be NSFW.

Kasdi Dwarf Lawful Evil Fighter / Cleric Warhammer: ++ Sling: ++ Kasdi is the secondary tank when required. When she's not needed for the front, she'll remain at ranged with her sling. Aliora Human Chaotic Good Fighter / Mage STR 15 DEX 17 CON 8 INT 17 WIS 9 CHA 18 Long Sword: + Long Bow: ++ Single Weapon Style: + Aliora starts off as a Fighter as a ranged damage dealer. When she reaches level 5, she duels to a mage and becomes the primary offensive spellcaster. She'll be the one to cast the Magic Missiles, Fireballs, Thunderbolts etc, whilst remaining an archer when not using her spells. She's also the diplomat and tends to be the one doing most of the talking and shopping. She'll get the CHA tome. Image may be NSFW.

Quorry Gnome Lawful Neutral Illusionist / Thief STR 9 DEX 16 CON 10 INT 19 WIS 17 CHA 12 Dagger: + Crossbow: + Quorry is the main disabling spellcaster. Casting Blind, Sleep, Web, Chaos etc. His thieving abilities will primarily be focused on Set Traps and then Pickpocket. This is mostly due to character flavour, due to being a gnome and tinkering with contraptions and devices. He's also the designated loremaster reducing the need for having to memorise Identify spells. To this end he'll get the INT tome.

Having some difficulties for next playthrough (SoA + ToB)

I would like to start a new game for BG2 Soa + ToB, but I'm having some difficulties:

1) Are you able to play Soa and ToB without playing BG1 first? In the past I was very much able to, but I feel like the fact that I roleplay a character even in BG1 makes it extremely difficult to start straight in BG2.
2) Are there any suggestions you can give me to actually decide which character should I make ?
3) Should I just straight out avoid playing paladin, given that their ethos would actually forbid me to do many things and make the roleplaying totally unidimensional? See this: Image may be NSFW.

4) How do you decide what to play in next playthroughs?

If you gave a shaman a totem, what would it do?

So I'm reading up and apparently Shamans often use totems, little animal carvings, in much the same way that clerics use a Holy Symbol.

So if you were to put a Totem anywhere in the series, for a Shaman to use, where would you put it and what would it do?

Your Class!

I'm so I since I emitted that I do like to imagine forum members, (mostly those I tend to have shared more than one actual conversation with) as PC in faerun and the forgotten realms I figured I'll start this topic.

I've decided I'll make this a little pet project, for when I get too depressed yo working on my comic (which seems to be every day now).

So here is the question, what is your...

Class
Race
Gender

For fun ill sketch it, or do a full illustration, or just a portrait.

Things to note:
This is a little side project for me, how fast I update depends on life, work, commissions, and whether not I'm going through yet another 'i give up drawing" episode.

So I think I've included everything. Also, no I'm not counting specific items from the game or dnd lore. That would require more research than I'm willing to do on my part. I do welcome small specific details, (scar on the face, or missing limbs), but lets not get crazy.

*braces for the hundred arm giant request.*

Please rate my party!

I'm planning a Trilogy playthrough. All tactical mods possible, minimal (hopefully no-) reload, maximum difficulty. And I want to attempt the Siege of Ust Natha. I also want to experience the EE content (which I've never played before). How does the following team sound?

Korgan: Dwarven Defender
Damage resistance tank, awesome saves, general enemy distractor, and epic bants. (In BG1 I'll take a Berserker Kagain.)

Viconia: F/M/C
I'll need a Cleric, but without Mage spells they are weak in SCS and other tactical formulations, and I'll need Fighter melee power. Viconia rocks as an original character, plus she has that incredible 65% Magic Resistance.

Dorn Il-Khan: F/D
The first truly unorthodox choice. I want a F/D for the extra heals, high-level shape-shifting and damage resistance, plus other decent tanking/buffing/disabling spells. I want an evil crew, so D fits. What do you think? Can you picture him as a F/D? Do you have a better suggestion?

Hexxat: F/M/T
I don't know what race she was supposed to be, but I'm going to pretend it was Half-Elf, to allow this MC. I heard she's a bit Lara Croft-y, so I reckon it fits. Technically this MC is a slow-growing powerhouse, filling a lot of shoes and later utilising Mislead and backstabs to deal terrific damage. (In BG1 I'll take a Bounty Hunter Safana.)

Edwin: Sorcerer
His amulet coupled with the Sorcerer's spell-casting is simply ridiculous. I love his conversations, his quest, and his demeanour. He will focus on buffs and debuffs, winning the Mage chess game. (In BG1/SoD I'll take Baeloth, who has a similarly powerful ring, and whom I also want to experience!)

Charname: Dragon Disciple
I want a nuker, and I'm planning to use Wish resting. This guy will combine heavy damage spells, high-level Mage debuffs, and general self-protections, to stay alive and hit them where it hurts. It also gives me a chance to experience another of the EE classes. Moreover I find the idea of a dragon heritage entirely too fitting for the future successor of Bhaal. Starting with 18 CON will lead to regeneration by the end of BG1. Fire Resist./Regen. really doesn't hurt, either! Image may be NSFW.

So there's the plan. I would be deeply appreciative if you have any thoughts or suggestions. Does Dorn fit F/D? Is the overall class synergy OK? Do you have a better suggestion for Charname? I was also considering Shaman or Shadowdancer, how would they compare in the above context?

BG3 confirmed!

Help! Stuck in Durlag's Tower (spoilers)

I'm in trouble. I'm doing a minimal reload run, so "reload and try again" would be my last option. This is what happened:
Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
6cwjwdob4ze8.jpg

I got teleported on the chess board, so I can't go back. I went through that door and downstairs, met the ghost of Durlag who told me what I'd have to do, and his wife offered me the option to transport me out.
I've put all my companions' stuff into a container so that it won't disappear.

If I accept Islanne's offer to teleport me out of there, will I be able to go back after Raising my companions, to get their stuff and maybe even finish the tower?

If it's not possible to go back after being sent out by Islanne, will I be able to get back into the tower if I finish it going solo? And yes, I know that would be very difficult, especially because it's my first time in Durlag's Tower (if you don't count a run in 1999 or 2000 which I don't remember), but that's not the point.

I'd really, really appreciate any help. I'd just try to go ahead, but it would be frustrating to notice after several hours that I'd have to reload anyway and then repeat everything.

Kickstarter for Baldur's Gate 3 please

Dear Beamdog, It's time to get going on BG3. Get a Kickstarter going and make it happen. If Obsidian can get enough backers to be working on PoE2... you guys can get enough backers to get BG3 going. Make it happen.

Sarevok in Soulcalibur

With BGIII on the rise, I decided to try and give it a shot. Overall, I'm pretty satisfied. The palette looks off, but eh.

Clarifications about spell descriptions

I'm creating a mod that attempts to improve the descriptions of some spells, and I have some questions about some descriptions:
  1. What's the area of effect of Time stop and Farsight?
  2. Is Spirit fire party friendly?
  3. The descriptions of Blade Barrier and Globe of Blades say that "Any creature attempting to pass through the blade barrier suffers 10d10 points of damage" What's the meaning of “pass through the Blade Barrier”? Does it mean making a melee attack against the caster?
  4. Blindness: How does it affect the range of sight of the victim?

Standalone installers for offline install/backup?

Is there a way to download a standalone installer that can be installed offline? I would like to be able to back up these games to disc, etc...

“Staff Mace” and weapon style proficiencies.

While doing a little independent research on different staff options in Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition, I stumbled upon a curious little item: the Staff Mace (https://baldursgate.fandom.com/wiki/Staff_Mace).

This is supposedly a Quarterstaff +2 which “transforms” into a mace. It seems as though it is always wielded as a one-handed weapon in-game despite reportedly falling within the quarterstaff proficiency. This got me thinking: if one was to give something like the Staff Mace to a character, what would be a complimentary weapon style to put proficiency points into?

Two-Handed Weapon Style? If the Staff Mace is indeed counted as a quarterstaff, then this makes sense. However, this quarterstaff is unusual in that it seems to be wielded with one hand, rather than two, which makes me think that Two-Handed Weapon Style may not apply.

Singe Weapon Style? Again, if the Staff Mace is wielded in one hand, this makes sense. However, the fact that it is counted as a quarterstaff (and is in the quarterstaff proficiency) could mean that it wouldn’t be recognized as a valid weapon for Single Weapon Style.

Two Weapon Style? Sort of an extension of Single Weapon style, in that if it is eligible for one, then I imagine it would be eligible for the other as well. If the Staff Mace is wielded in one hand and you dual-wield with another weapon, would you get the benefit of Two Weapon Style, despite the Staff Mace technically being a quarterstaff (which is typically a two-handed weapon)?

I could see good arguments for all of these scenarios and thus thought I would pose the question here to see if anyone has any further insights to share.

The great Shadows of Amn conspiracy!

I bet someone else thought about it... I always have seen some clues on something "bigger" going on in Shadows of Amn, so I gathered some clues here and there : 1) Kalah, the tiny little gnome illusionist, mentions in his final breath that he was promised something. He achieved great power in that tent, even though Aerie said his skills weren't ever that powerful. It is possible that he wanted that in his own ambition, as stated that Gnomes are pretty much just made fun of in Athkatla, or hunted down as criminals. But what if his motives weren't his own, but rather he was controlled? 2) In the de'Arnise hold, Glacias, Lord Arnise's personal bodyguard as well as friend states that his new masters shown him the truth through magic. Incidentally, TorGal didn't have ANY magic, but he *did* have some beasts that made holes through the underground - the Umber Hulks! 3) In the dungeon at Windspear hills, we meet Tazok... *again*, even after having him decapitated, splattered in tiny pieces of minced meat... well, you get my meaning. Interestingly enough, he has new masters and new plans this time around and carries a key with him, key that opens a secret door to the sewers in Athkatla! I am pretty much sure there are other clues scattered around, but I forgot them by today. Yet one thing is certain - all clues lead to the Illithids indirectly. Are those dudes trying to conquer the world or are they simply testing the protagonist? Cut content? Pretty damn sure it was. What do you guys think?

Controversial Opinion: Constitution is a surprisingly good dump stat

It takes 9 Constitution points to go from 7 to 16, which is the most you can benefit from in most classes.

Those 9 points only get you 2 hp per level.

You can do so many things with those 9 points.

If you're a mage your protections will make HP a moot point most of the time anyway. Thieves are gonna want to make a hasty retreat if they end up in the line of fire most of the time. Clerics have a level 2 spell that will eventually be able to boost their constitution by up to 6 points. Theives probably rely on their constitution the most but they all to various degrees can afford to lose some Con points.

Paladin kits which is best?

So I'm thinking of running a pally, because I hardly ever have the nutters in my party, because I really don't like paladins much. Then I thought hey if I made a pally and made him a half-elf or elf "I use tweaks/SCS, so shhh" and RP'd him as not lawful stupid most of the time, it could be pretty cool. A high dex pally that never wore anything heavier than chain, because he valued mobility over defense."and I value the chain mail elf sprite over the horrible plate mail elf sprite." Now I'm just trying to figure out which kit to run, I'm leaning toward a Undead Hunter or a Cavalier, because you get enough dispel out of Carsomyr and party mages take care of all the real debuffing anyways. So Inquisitor is not looking so great, True sight is not really worth it, rogues detect illusions is just better. Also I like the idea of CHARNAME being a hunter of something, undead, demons, dragons it matters not. I don't want to play a Blackguard, because I'm almost finished a Assassin run and using the OPness that is poison weapon again just doesn't seem fair. Plus I don't feel like doing a evil run. But all of this is beside the point. So which paladin do you think is best overall?

Weird AI hotkey

The E key in my BG2 game has a weird hotkey behaviour. Every time I press it a label is displayed on top of my summoned creatures that first says "AI active" and then "AI inactive". I've mapped my E key to Select All and I use it all the time, so this is quite annoying. I don't know if it has any actual effects in the game.

My key bindings setup correctly shows the E key mapped to Select All. I guess this might come from a mod, but a quick look didn't reveal this hotkey in the documentation of the mods I use. Just in case, anyway, my mods are Tweaks Anthology, SCS, Portraits everywhere, Lighting pack, Jimfix, EE UI Tweaks, Inferno. I reinstalled everything a few days ago (to upgrade to SCS v32, not to fix this), but it's still happening in this fresh installation.

What does "better part of valor" told by Khalid mean?

I can't find any informations on google or if it is a reference.

I never heard it being pronounced by anyone as well. What does it mean?

AD&D General Mechanics

@Raduziel

OK, let's continue here our discussion....

So, Hit Die refers also to the level the creature is supposed to be.... This means that Umber Hulks are always a level 8 creature and Goblins a level 1 creature.... But does this rule apply if the creature under consideration is, say, a FIGHTER (i.e., a playable class)? I'm asking because in SoD there are certain goblins coded as level 2/3 FIGHTERs....
