[Infinity engine] Critical hits and critical misses

How do critical hits and misses work?

This is what I know:

Critical hits: You score a critical hit when you attack and roll a 20. A critical hit always hits the target, regardless of your to hit number (assuming the target isn't immune to your weapon). Sometimes you also score a critical hit when you roll a 19. This happens when you are proficient in the two-handed weapon style or the single weapon style. A critical hit deals more damage than a normal hit. Helmets protect from critical hits. Some creatures are immune to critical hits.

Critical misses: You get a critical miss when you attack and roll a 1. A critical miss always misses the target, regardless of your to hit number, and your next attack is delayed.

Questions:
 1. How much is your next attack delayed with a critical miss?
 2. How much extra damage do you get from a critical hit? With magical weapons, do you also get a bonus to the extra magical damage?
 3. What else makes you score a critical hit with a 19?
 4. Is it possible to score critical hits with lower numbers (18, 17...)?
 5. Are there critical rolls in any other rolls, like saving throws or thieving ability rolls? If so, how do those work?
 6. Is there anything apart from helmets that protects from critical hits? And from critical misses?
 7. Anything else I need to know about criticals?

Edit: Fixed some mistakes in the questions.

How do magical immunities work?

I want to understand how magical immunities work, there are so many cases in which I don't know what to expect. Two examples:

I attack a rakshasa with a wand of frost. The combat log says "Maharajah: spell ineffective". The description of the wand says "Charge abilities: Cone of cold". AFAIK rakshasas are immune to spells up to level 7, so they must be immune to the spell Cone of Cold. However, the game doesn't say this is a spell, it says it's an ability, so it looks like the rakshasa shouldn't be immune to it.

I attack a golem with the flail of the ages and the golem gets slowed. Golems are immune to magic, so why are they vulnerable to the slow effect? Isn't it a magic effect?

What happens to stealth when you dual from ranger to thief?

Demihuman Charname Thread! Stats, RP ideas, Portraits!

This thread started as just a request for ideas implementing the kobold race as a pc. It became a starting point where people started exchanging ideas for demihuman charnames. So I've renamed the thread and put this new, poorly worded intro to reflect how the thread has evolved. As the title says. Anyone have a good stat guideline and racial abilities? I can make it fit cosmetically with EEKeeper, but does anyone know what weapon animations are supported? Also, can I equip weapons that don't have animations without breaking anything? A way to have "Kobold" show as the race would be nice, but isn't essential. Ooh, maybe we can make this a demihuman thread in general. Share different builds and concepts for unusual races, that people can try.

I'm so I since I emitted that I do like to imagine forum members, (mostly those I tend to have shared more than one actual conversation with) as PC in faerun and the forgotten realms I figured I'll start this topic.

I've decided I'll make this a little pet project, for when I get too depressed yo working on my comic (which seems to be every day now).

So here is the question, what is your...

Class
Race
Gender

For fun ill sketch it, or do a full illustration, or just a portrait.

Things to note:
This is a little side project for me, how fast I update depends on life, work, commissions, and whether not I'm going through yet another 'i give up drawing" episode.

So I think I've included everything. Also, no I'm not counting specific items from the game or dnd lore. That would require more research than I'm willing to do on my part. I do welcome small specific details, (scar on the face, or missing limbs), but lets not get crazy.

*braces for the hundred arm giant request.*

What's Your Signature Weapon and Armor?

A simple question: if you were in a fantasy environment like Faerun, what weapons and armor, if any, would best suit you?

The choice doesn't need to be realistic, and you don't need to factor in weather or expense. This is more about your personal style and preference rather than realism or safety (otherwise, how many people would say no to full plate mail?).

What would you wield and what would you wear if you were an adventurer?

How many hours do you have in the Infinity Engine?

I was recently looking at the Steam store's review page for all the Infinity Engine games, and I noticed that the average playtime is around 50 hours. I thought it would be fun to have a thread for users to compare their play times throughout the Infinity Engine games. I'll start out with my (somewhat embarrassing) times: Baldur's Gate: 311 hours
Baldur's Gate II: 719 hours (Thanks to EET, I mostly play Baldur's Gate in Baldur's Gate II)
Icewind Dale: 179 hours
Planescape Torment: 44 hours
That's a grand total of 1,253 hours I've wasted away in the Infinity Engine over a period of six years (that's 2.3% of those six years!). To be fair, these games are my go to time killer. I'm anxious to see if my times are indeed as crazy as I believe them to be :D

Moving this here so as not to distract from the EEex thread.

@subtledoctor Why not run the game on your desktop and stream it to your ipad, whenever you need to do something that you can't do on an ipad directly?

I don't understand. Set aside that my "desktop" is a laptop in sleep mode on the floor when not in use; if you "stream" the game, how do you control it? The iOS controls are incredibly intuitive (minus the lack of an ability to orient your party when you move); would streaming the game mean using the ipad touchscreen to simulate a mouse and keyboard, to make clicks happen on the game screen? No offense, but that sounds pretty terrible. Like, it sacrifices the main thing that makes the tablet version of the game better.

I´d like to know the reasons why from someone who made the decision of not including B in BG2:EE.

What is the dialect people speak in Baldur's Gate?

I'm curious about the way people speak in the game, some words and grammar are a bit different from standard English. Not being a native English speaker, I've no idea of what kind of dialect it is. For instance, a line from Cromwell: "There YE go, ME friend. Use it well. And if YE COMES across anything else of interest, YE KNOWS where to bring it, AYE?"

Things like "me friend" and "aye" I have heard IRL, although not often. Others, like "ye comes", I've never heard outside this game.

Do we have a barbarian NPC?

We don't, do we? Minsc is a ranger, though I don't see what's so "natural" about him. Maybe Bioware just used what they had. Anything in the mods?

Any blind or beginner Let's Plays?

Hey all!

I'm in the mood to watch some BG/BG2 Let's Plays, but most of what I can find seems to be either expert runs (solos, challenges and the such), or experienced players who stream the game but offer little commentary/opinion.

I'd really love to go with someone on their journey of discovering the BG series and seeing their reactions to all the things that excited me on my first playthrough.

Does anyone know of any good blind or non-experienced (ex: been a long time since they've played, playing evil/good for the first time, never completed the game, etc.) Let's Plays that offer commentary/discussion as they go and are not abandoned projects?

Raising Charname - Minimal Reload Thread (BG1-SoD-BG2 Spoilers)

Hello, since we have an official no-reload thread managed by @Ygramul , I thought we could use an official minimal reload thread to go along with it. This thread will be for people like me who lose their no-reload status, but would like to continue sharing their runs. The main spirit of a good minimal reload is that, first, you only reload if Charname dies. Under no other circumstance can you reload and still consider it a minimal reload. If you think there should be an exception to this rule, it's okay, but just explain that you reloaded and why. The second element of a good minimal reload, is that you keep a counter at the bottom of your posts of how many times you have reloaded, and preferably keep a list of why Charname died and where. The last thing is that you should share your game build, that is, tell what mods you have if any, and give full disclosure about difficulty settings and the like. So, those are the "rules", but they are flexible as long as you explain your reasoning why you "bent" or "broke" the "rules". So, without further ado, here is my current run. I am using version 2.0 without any mods, Core Rules. I first lost my no-reload status during Neera's encounter. It has been changed and re-scripted to make it much more difficult. I kind of got sore and made some sour-grapes posts about that in the no-reload thread. Sorry about that. I've calmed down and accepted that I am playing a BG game that has a lot of changes in it that I don't know about yet, and some dying to those changes is inevitable. After I decided to keep playing and not accept that first death as legitimate, I now have had Charname die without any question of the fairness of the death. I was just plain careless and stupid. I tried to tank an ettercap in a "you have been waylaid..." encounter in the Cloakwood. I got poisoned. I tried to use Bhaalspawn Slow Poison, and it got interrupted. I then tried to drink an antidote, but my aura wasn't clear, so it was far too late. End of no-reload, no argument possible. ;) One thing I really like about 2.0 is that you can see in a single screenshot of the quest journal exactly where I am in the game now without my having to explain it.

Reloads: 2 - Neera's encounter, ettercap random encounter in the Cloakwood Come on, all minimal reloaders! Let's share our runs, even with very short posts showing the quest journal and a reload counter, and make this a thing in our forums! Who will be the first to do a complete minimal reload of the entire trilogy including SoD, with fewer than 5-10 reloads?

Heroes of Baldur's Gate: A 5e PnP Adventure

It looks like there is a new 5e adventure set in Baldur's Gate and it mentions some characters we should all know very well. As an avid DM for 5e I am super excited to eventually run this.

Anyone worried that Axis & Allies might flop?

I've heard very little buzz around this, youtube announcement got few views, the AMA got like 5 questions and all my gaming circles/websites/discords aren't even talking about it. Was this project the right move for Beamdog? Seems like such a far cry from their usual work, as if it came out of left field. Was there any official statement on why this game was chosen? I hate to be negative but I feel like the efforts should have been directed elsewhere. I supposed only time will tell.

Come suggest some theme songs for each NPC!

For the music lovers out there! What songs do you guys think would be fitting for each NPC? Share a tune that fits their character, their story or their attitude. All suggestions welcome! I'll begin with some: Due t his marriage difficulties and his wife's name, I'll give Keldorn "Maria, Maria" by Santana. The pain in his voice when he says "Maria!" after his wife says "What if I don't love you anymore?" is just heartbreaking. Also, Manowar's "Heart of Steel" just describes his attitude toward evil perfectly for me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPLV7lGbmT4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vaqH3v31X4w Dorn must have some kind of song about being badass and evil. The songs "Bad to the Bone" by George Thorogood would fit, but I'm a big metal fan, so I'll give him Iced Earth's "Pure Evil" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dT1H4Iu4vos http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Djj7jW6ny2M Eldoth just has to be an outlaw country song, so I either have to go with "Didn't Your Mama Tell ya 'bout Boys Like Me" by Montgomery Gentry or for a better song, Iron Maiden's "Running Free" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEL5SSpCcTM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9des4HfNJ6o Skie would definitely be the Upper Middle Class spoiled girl who totally thinks she's cool for listening to rrap, so I'd have to give her some Kanye (the go-to artist for these people). She's also the totally non-metal sorority girl who constantly misuses Dio's horn sign while listening to Blink 182 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsO6ZnUZI0g http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7l5ZeVVoCA For Yoshimo you gotta go with http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJBoHa3GArA Please Share! :)

Links to useful knowledge about the games that other way could be lost.

This thread is to create a directory from which to access to the threads that analyzed in deep technical aspects of the games, tactics or other way give information that don't deserve to be buried by the new threads and become very hard to find by the new/old players.

My task is only to maintain the thread, everyone that has relevant links can contribute suggesting them in the thread or sending me a PM, if the links are suited i will introduce them in the OP posts and will become part of the directory. Is up to you fellow players to make this thread an useful resource that allow to anybody to quickly find useful information about the games.

The directory will be divided in few sections.
The first one is about technical aspects of the engine and how the different things (ie thieving skills or casting) work.
The second one is about combat tactics and weapon comparison.
I include some placeholders so if someone suggest new sections them can be introduced at the top of the thread.

This thread is not the place to discuss about that knowledge, if someone want to propose new tactics or else please open a dedicated thread and ask for it to be linked here. To tell that a link is to an obsolete or inaccurate thread obviously is possible and welcome.

Please @JuliusBorisov give evidence to this thread as we already have agreed.
And if somebody can suggest a better title for the discussion i am not really found of the one i use now... :)

Upscaling Infinity Engine Maps with AI

Upscaling NN algorithms have recently became popular and there are some very successful examples with Morrowind and DOOM. Me and some others the gameupscale subreddit have been experimenting with some different games and I decided to have a go at upscaling some Infinity Engine maps. Original (Upscaled x4): Upscaled by AI: More with BG2. and more less successful attempts with IWD. Some of them didn't work out as well as I hoped but it's all about experimentation. I also used Waifu2x when I think I would get better results using ESRGAN, but I don't have the GPU to use ESRGAN with the size of these images. Waifu2x was trained on anime imagery which obviously doesn't translate well to the type of maps in Infinity Engine games. Infinity Engine games mostly still look good today but I think they could still gain a slight benefit from upscaling, especially if you play with enhanced editions and use the zoom feature. We've been experimenting with other games at r/gameupscale as I think these upscaling algorithms have the potential to improve a lot of older games :) I couldn't get them working properly in game though, but I've never worked with modding Infinity Engine games before. I think I'm incorrectly converting them back to TIF as the seams become very apparent.

I have tried to complete Baldur's Gate several and I make it into Baldur's Gate City. That is where the game comes to a complete end. The city is BORING! Anyone out there think the same?
