The perennial question

$

What to play?

I've finally managed to get a satisfactory set of mods installed on my iPad, which is the only feasible vehicle for playing games right now. And my own mods are in a pretty stable state, and I don't have time to do much more modding anyway. So, for the first time in at least three or four years, I'm actually going to play Baldur's Gate. :open_mouth:

But that raises the question: what profession should Charname be?? I've only played IWD lately, so I'm spoiled by its ability to create 6 characters. If I can only make one, what will it be?

This will necessarily be informed by my list of mods. Scales of Balance is installed, so every stat matters and rogues are a bit more capable offensively. And Might & Guile is installed, so fighters and thieves get fun feats to play with, and bards get all sorts of cool capabilities. Tome & Blood is installed, so single-class wizard specialists are actually pretty unique and powerful, and 1st-level spells are now infinite-cast cantrips. And Faiths & Powers is installed, so there are literal tons of priests and champions and mystics and druids and rangers to choose from.

Finally, most importantly, NPC_EE is installed, so the in-game NPCs can be more varied:
- Imoen is a multi thief/mage
- Jaheria is a single-class druid
- Khalid is a ranger... I'm thinking Mage Hunter would suit him (and his ultimate fate) pretty well
- Minsc is a plain fighter, he'll be a Berserker, natch
- Montaron is a single-class thief... Assassin, surely
- Xan is a fighter/mage... with that sword, I think he needs to be a Bladesinger
- Branwen is a multi fighter/cleric
- Safana will be a Swashbuckler
- Coran is a single-class thief, probably either a Hunter or a Sniper
- Skie can be a Jinxer, which is like a half-bard/half-thief/half-hexblade
- Alora is a cleric/thief... I know that sounds crazy but I'm thinking she will not so much be a real priest, as a 'Chauncey Gardiner' type - like, maybe there is really wisdom underlying her bubbly babbling, but not really, but maybe, but no seriously not, etc.

For mod NPCs, there are Finch (cleric), Vynd (assassin?), Indira (F/M), Valerie (sorcerer), Sirene (paladin), Isra (paladin) and Tenya (cleric).

There are really tons of NPCs in this game, every class is pretty well-represented. Maybe I should try something a bit more out there, like a Psypher (psionicist) or an elemental Mystic Warrior.

Anyway, I've spent so much time with Weidu and modding and completely ignoring these kinds of conversations... I'd appreciate input from all you people who have talked this through and played this through so many times. Cheers!

EDIT - I'll hopefully play through BG2 as well - I've installed a dummy mod so all of my mod kits should match up in kitlist.2da and kit.ids, so hopefully I should be able to import the character into BG2EE without messing that up. So high-level considerations and 2nd-game party makeup can also be taken into account.

Bad taste

The encroachments of bad taste are numerous. In these games, especially in everything after BG1, IWD and Torment, I see so many things that make my tongue behave as if it tastes tan, that wonderful nomad beverage of sour milk, salt and, I think, armpits. But nothing is so bad as when I read about players' tactics and what they take for granted, how they behave, what they do with their wizards. AD&D, the spirit and the letter, hasn't just been buried - people are using its tombstone for a skate board. Somehow even Diablo is less crude than this, maybe because it had no real claims to being a role-playing game. It was dubbed "RPG," but everyone knew it was just action. And here?

Yes, these used to be treated as role-playing games... What a strange old phrase that is. Computer role-playing... and the hyphen... mysterious. What was that even supposed to mean? There must have been something. Back then, we took the... and put them in the... we tried to... Damn, I can't remember. It must have been in another century, another millennium, why, so it was. No, no, it's all about levels, kits and builds and the next attack spell Beamdog invents.

Sorcerer defensive spell choices

Hi all, I'm trying to up my game and add a defensive wrinkle to my sorcerer builds, and I'm wondering if there's any point in taking both the spell turning series and the globe of invulnerability series. I'm guessing it's better to wait for spell turning?

Context: I want to create a sorcerer who can do it all. He can dish out some punishment but also play a bit of mage chess. I've always been a little weak on the defensive side of things when it comes to arcane casters. Thanks in advance for any advice, and feel free to expound on your defensive tactics or other aspects of the spell slinging trade.

Stranger Things **spoilers**

So I'm currently rewatching series 1, enjoying it even more than the first time. And have finished series 2.

So, as it's something of a big hit at the moment, mentioned everywhere, and it shows the children playing D&D, thought there should be some acknowledgement here for it.

I haven't played D&D except for BG so was hoping those more knowledgeble would post any things they have picked up on that would only be known to "real" D&D players.

So I obviously got Demagorgon and was ridiculously delighted when there was an episode called "Mind Flayer" but anything else only a true D&D person would pick up?

Also, does anybody think this will cause reknewed interest in D&D?

Character Viewer / Sprite Sheet

Hey guys,

Is there any program or website where I can browse the different characters/sprites from BG/IWD?
I'm asking because I've been messing around a bit with EE Keeper, and it's pretty cool that it allows me to, for example, change a character into a goblin but... It has a crap-load of goblins, and the only way I can see the different types is by changing my character into (for example) Goblin1, load the game, look at it; change it to Goblin2, load the game, look at it, etc... It's time consuming and boring.
So... Yeah. Any help?

I may play BG again.

So I've been gone a while due to life. Life who needs it, am I right? Anyways I was thinking of attempting my first no reload, but I need some tips from you all who have been doing these things longer than I have...

Here are the things that I'm none negotiable with...

MC- mage- wild mage
Party- no more than four
Mods- always welcome, but it's been a while so I'm open to mods that make the game more alive, make magic more interesting, or make the world more difficult then I'm all for it. So yea, I'm open to suggestions.

I'm probably going to walk the path of neutrality and favor decisions of magic.

I think that is everything.

What do we have for gaze attackers between BG1 and BG2?

Basilisks, Aec-Lectec... Period, I think. Vampires in BG2 don't have a charming gaze, do they?

Cleric or Druid as an offensive caster?

$

Hey everyone,

Basically, I'm stuck between what class to roll for a playthrough of the Baldur's Gate trilogy, time old conundrum I know!

I'd like to play a caster, that much I'm sure. But I really, really want to avoid relegating my charname to a buff/healbot. So ideally, I think I'd like to play as a more offence oriented caster.

Now I know Mages and Sorcerers are the 'best' choice here by a wide margin (at least, that's what I believe) - but my question is, how do Druids and Clerics stack up in this role?

To be clear, I'm asking about their casting abilities, I don't want to play, for example, a cleric, who buffs him/herself up to monstrous fighter proportions and then bashes heads in. Instead, I'm asking basically if it's more-or-less feasible to have a Cleric or Druid pew-pew-ing enemies with their actual spells, throughout the entirety of the trilogy.

Enemy alignment

Is there a database to check creature alignements? SoD has Modron Stone which gives improvement against chaotic so which enemies are chaotic, are trolls chaotic? Paladin can't yet cast Know Alignment in SoD without xp uncap.

Icewind Dale III

I want you to make an opinion on bringing back to life Icewind Dale series. A lot of people is talking about Baldur's Gate III, but as we already know BG story is over and shouldn't be touched IMO. But what about making IWD III with a spirit of BG? The new story with references to previous IE games (BG included). With joinable characters like in BG series, some NPCs from IWD I & II and BG series. The rule set from IWD II would be great with all that diplomacy, bluff, class, gender etc. checks in the game. BG is a finished story and there shouldn't be any new game under this name. IWD storywise, on the other hand, is still an open book and "Icewind Dale" as trademark had also a lot of marketing potential and old fans.

BG:EE, BG2:EE and IWD:EE are on sale on GoG.com (-50%)

If you could cast just ONE spell...

What would it be? It can be any spell from the IE games, cleric or druid or mage or innate, or even a spell that's not available to the player without EEKeeper or a mod.

You get to cast the spell once per day as if you were level 10, and it works just like it would in the original game (not in PnP). For the sake of argument, let's say you're picking the spell that would be most enjoyable for YOU personally, just so all you do-gooders out there won't feel obligated to pick Heal so you can cure diseases and be a big humanitarian and stuff.

Female Charname Romance Suggestions

Doing a very rare female charname run soon-ish, and I'm looking for suggestions on romance choices. I'm not a fan of the selection in the vanilla game, though Rasaad is adorable, a monk is difficult to run in my typical party setup. Are there any really good mod npcs that have good romances? I'm a big fan of Jaheira, Aerie, and Rasaad, so roamnces similar to Dorn or Viconia are right out.

I don't understand Bhaal's Logic.

$

If killing Bhaalspawns would return the essence to Bhaal in the Abyss so that he can be revived, what was the logic behind spreading his essence to as many Bhaalspawns as possible? Wouldn't it make more sense to copulate with his most trusted priestess and have her bear his Bhaalspawn (with the majority of his essence inside) and then sacrifice the child to revive Bhaal, just like what Bane did with Iyachtu Xvim, his half-demon son?

It just seems inane of Bhaal to dilute his essence to so many Bhaalspawns who could very well venture somewhere remote and live their lives undisturbed and their essence forever trapped inside (just like many minor Bhaalspawn characters who were brought to Saradush only because of Melissan's ambition).

Or am I missing something here?

Why do peoople like Icewind Dale 2 so much?

so somewhat recently I've being seeing more and more talk about IWD 2 and the fact that beamdog was trying to make an EE for it but couldn't because they didn't have the assets for it and all that good jazz, and people were bummed out and all that yadda, but is there really enough people out there that like this game to make an EE for it?

in my personal opinion I found IWD 2 to be an incredibly weak link in the isometric black isle RPG game line up, in fact, I didn't like it at all, I've never found IWD 2 to be fun ever, the game felt very unpolished and broken, and I felt more "ugh" than "wow this is great" when playing it, playing IWD 2 felt more like a chore than an enjoyable experience for me at least

so I'm wondering, who out there actually liked this game and why?

Choose your party by your alignment range.

Hey ya!

Just for fun, what choices would you make if you had to choose your party by alignment same as in ToEE?
The rule is that you can only choose companions that are either the same aligment or vertically or horizontally attached to yours.

For instance: A Lawful Good character can only have Lawful Good, Neutral Good and Lawful Neutral characters in his party, while a True neutral character can have TN,LN, NG,CN and NE allies.

Here's a picture to make your choice easier, don't forget to justify your answer!
