There Can Only Be One

If you were able to play only one of the Infinity Engine games, which'n one would you choose?
Consider the first four options as Schrödinger's Enhanced Editions - the choice reflects either EE or original game; BGEE with or without Siege of Dragonspear, depending on your preference.

Choose your party by your alignment range.

Hey ya!

Just for fun, what choices would you make if you had to choose your party by alignment same as in ToEE?
The rule is that you can only choose companions that are either the same aligment or vertically or horizontally attached to yours.

For instance: A Lawful Good character can only have Lawful Good, Neutral Good and Lawful Neutral characters in his party, while a True neutral character can have TN,LN, NG,CN and NE allies.

Here's a picture to make your choice easier, don't forget to justify your answer!

Fireball blasts a little too big?

I get a feeling the blasts were smaller in the original BG, or somehow more manageable. With the resolution that we had then it still took effort to walk out of my own fireballs' scope, but be that as it may, I have little use for the huge coverage of EE fireballs. Mostly I'm concerned about maneuvering the party out of there. What about you?

There's steam sale. I didn't enjoy IWDEE and BGEE. I enjoyed IWD2 and BG2EE. I feel like IWDEE AND BGEE grow so old it's visible through story, atmosphere, maps. On the other hand, IWD2 is awesome to me, just like BG2EE.

Wild Surge Issue 6 - Ghosts and Spirits

Ghost and goblins and ghouls, oh my! The sixth issue of the Wild Surge magazine has materialized from the mists, bringing with it tales of ominous spirits and woe.

Dip into the Belgariad's lore and discover the tragic Marags, then learn how to raise the dead from their eternal slumber in Diablo 3: Rise of the Necromancer.

Explore the Weeping Widow Inn in the snowy wastes of Targos (Icewind Dale II) and peer into another's souls through a Watcher's eyes in Eora (Pillars of Eternity).

And what's a good ghost story without a few crumbling ruins? Hear the tales of Durlag's Tower, a bard and her singing ghosts, and the remains of an ancient chapel.

But fear not, good reader, for when your heart is racing and your mind is tired, our good storyteller Anduin the Gnome will bring you back home. Just, ah... Mind the mummy trappings.

Sweeping thanks go to everyone who made this issue possible: @deltago, @O_Bruce, @SFisch, @mlnevese, @typo_tilly, @JuliusBorisov, @Anduin, @Vallmyr, @Nonnahswriter, @semiticgod, and, of course, you guys! Fellow forumites of the Baldur's Gate and Beamdog community. :)

All of our previous issues can be found at https://www.wildsurge.ca/archive. If you have any questions, comments, concerns, or would like to get involved in the Wild Surge, please email us at the.wild.surge@gmail.ca.

We sincerely hope you enjoy! And Happy Halloween... :naughty:

Your dream RPG

Ok, here is the deal. You are the lead developer, well, at least manager (for instance, I me personally can't program, at all, so I think it would be a stretch to call myself a developer) with a multi-million dollar backing and absolutely free hands. The only rule is that it must be a RPG.

Here is my tl:dr; a "camera behind the back" action RPG with slowmo, that switches to top down when you issue orders, and first person when you aim a ranged weapon.

For longer version, mix the following ingredients;

Pillars of eternity

Steal: Importance of distance, position of NPC, skill system uses per day etc. PoE is so streamlined it is ridicolous. Definitely have the best combat system of any RPG to date.

image

Steal: For tactical gameplay, Myth 2 rules supreme.

image

Steal: Watch 6:29. The importance of outwitting your opponent. Button mashing simply just wont work in this game, you will get your ass handed to you.

image

Steal: The platformning only, obviously. Button mashing DOES work in this game, so I want to be clear about that I am uninterested in the combat system of this game. I dunno why oh why they dumbed down the combat system from probably the most advanced fencing in any game, in the very least of that era, to no brain button mashing, but they did. Now, I don't want all chars to be able to monkey about like the prince, just those with high dex and many points in acrobatics skill or whatever.

Grim Dawn / Champions of Norrath:

Steal: Both these games have incredibly responsive controls. I want that.

image

Red Steel 2 is such a great game. It is criminally underappreciated. Yes, I mean that literally. If I was dictator of the world, I would put people in prison for badmouthing this game.
Steal: Everything!!! Unfortunately, button mashing DOES work, once you aquire a special blocking move. You can keep repeating it indefinitely, and you will block everything followed by a riposte. I am 100% convinced that spamming that move is an exploit and not intended to be part of the game, so I pretend it is not possible.

image

Steal: The wall attachment feature (cover system). Also seen in games like Gears of War. I think at least - I have never actually played that game, just seen footage.

Secret of Mana:

Steal: Jump in, jump out system. Games like Baldurs Gate are actually HORRIBLE online, because one person is so clearly the leader, therefore, everyone else gets bored out of their skulls in between fights. Games like Diablo works for online play... by sacrificing storytelling and plot submerge all together. So, I propose jump in jump out combat. One person plays the game - others are allowed to jump in jump out when they feel (and, of course, if they are invited), taking control of one of the companions. This way, you can take the best of two worlds. Yes, you can eat the cake and keep it. Lovely!

Mortal kombat / DAO:

Steal: Finishing moves. Being able to execute opponents (at least bosses / minibosses) in style just adds a certain, well, touch to the game.

Many games: Slowmo systems

I want 3 skills.

1) A "reflex" skill, where time slows down if you pass a "reflex" roll, and you are given blue arrows indicating which buttons you must press, and if you do in time, you dodge the attack. Bonus to the skill if you have a shield.

2) A "leadership" skill. You see, you cannot have direct control of your team mates, they have their own mind and GOOD AI, but you can bark out orders to them, that they will hopefully follow. If you are not engaged in a melee fight, you can press a button, and time will come to a complete halt for a couple of seconds (the more leadership and intelligence you have, the more seconds you get) and during this time, you get a top down view, like Myth II or PoE, and you can give orders. When time resumes, you will start barking out the orders, and your companions, depending on their loyalty, your charisma, how dangerous task you give them, how scared they are, etc, will attempt to perform the orders you give, rather than doing what their AI suggested. Once you have issued orders, the leadership skill enters cooldown for some time, before you can use it again.

3) An "execute" skill - when an opponent is dazed, fumbles, badly injured and similar, time will slow down, and you can clickety click in a key combination for a finishing move. Which you then perform, if you clickety clicked it in time.

Sigma;

A game with "behind the back" view (like Prince of Persia 3D), which, when you aim carefully with a ranged weapon, switches to first person view, like Red Steel 2, and, when you issue orders, switches to a top down view, like Myth II. Ranged combat is like Gun, Red Dead Revolver and Red Steel 2, while melee combat is like prince of persia 3D. There is a cover system, you can attach to any wall. The biggest and baddest ranged weapon out there will be crossbows, wands and muskets. Extremely high firepower with high rate of fire of course discourages melee, so that is out.
Skills make you more likely to succeed with, well, whatever you are attempting, but you still need to control your characters every move like in Red Steel 2, Champions of Norrath and Prince of Persia. Melee combat VERY MUCH depends on outwitting your opponent, just like fencing in Prince of Persia (3D).
Squad tactics, that is, position of your characters, height advantage, cover, traps etc etc etc matters.

All of that alone makes a great game, even if the storytelling is on pair with Diablo.

But for good measure, I pour some solid storytelling on top, like the icing of the cake.

Your turn.

Projectile AoE size in Near Infinity

They say if you don’t understand, just ask :)

Two examples:
Death Fog, it’s 256 in NI, and 30 ft radius in in-game description, ratio: 30/256=0.1171875
Shield of Fyrus Khal, it’s 90 in NI, and 10 ft radius in in-game description, ratio:10/90=0.1111111

My question is, what do those 256, 90 numbers stand for and which of the above (or other) ratio value should I use as a standard to calculate other ft radius?

Thanks!

How to get the original games after purchasing the Enhanced Editions on GOG

  1. Have or purchase any of the Enhanced Editions by Beamdog on GOG
  2. Select game in GOG account library (not in GOG Galaxy)
  3. Select "more" -> "serial keys"
  4. On the serial key page, use the link provided to redeem a free copy of the original game
And just in case anyone is confused by the wording of the serial to redeem being named as Enhanced Edition:
Hello, these keys are for the classic editions, they are just named in a bit of a misleading way, as they are bonuses FOR these games - if you enter these pages and click "continue", you can look up the contents of the code before finally redeeming it - or not.

The topic has come up recently, and a couple times in the past, regarding the availability of the original games on GOG.
I can't find the original games for download at Steam, GOG, or Gamersgate, however Amazon has the (4) originals for about $10
The reason why they can no longer be found is due to them being merged; while not exactly the same, it's similar, as mentioned before, to the 'Remastered' editions of the Broken Sword games. When you purchase a copy of the Enhanced Edition for Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate II, or Icewind Dale, there will be a message under the product information in your library.

Copies purchased prior to the merge will still be listed in your library. Whether you purchased a copy of the Enhanced Edition before or after the merge, you will be eligible to get a free copy of the original along with the Enhanced Edition. If you select an Enhanced Edition in your games library, you'll see the following message (the example is Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition, but applies also to Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition and Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition).

Note the message at the bottom:
Message from GOG.com

Baldur's Gate Classic Edition gift code in now available in the "more" -> "serial keys" section.
Following the instructions here will provide a link to redeem the original, 'classic', version of the game.

Call to Arms... I mean Aid... Help! BG1:EE The Enemy Within [Work in progress]

Greetings everyone! So, this is a call to help finish a mod I started about 3 years ago. However, with my current situation in life, there is no change I will ever be able to finish the mod. I might still be able to do some work for it (most likely artwork and such), but not much, if any at all. @LavaDelVortel already agreed to help, but don't want to push all the help on one person, so more help is always welcome.

Here is a link to discussion about the mod and some pictures and so forth: https://forums.beamdog.com/discussion/46446/the-enemy-within-a-new-mod-coming-work-in-progress/p1

If you got interested, any help would be welcome. Send me a message, here on discussion or private, and I will send you a link to download the mod and check it out if you want to help (the mod is NOT ready: it's not worth downloading for actual playing and might BREAK your current play through).

Has Project Image Been Nerfed?

$

Just something I noticed on my current BG2 run, where I planned on taking down that one Balor the same way I've done several times before - by having a mage cast Fireshield: Blue, plus Stoneskin, Mirror Image, PFMW, and all that good stuff. But all that with a Project Image clone, to reduce risk and spell consumption. And so I sent my Edwin hologram to do its thing, and well...

A couple problems emerged. Big one was that although Edwin had two PFMW prepared, my clone didn't have a single one ready to cast. Also, I noticed that he only had one Mirror Image prepared, even though Edwin had two. Looking down the spell list, it looked like a fair few of Edwin's prepared spells were missing. Is this a bug, or did they nerf the Project Image spell? I'm not sure I could blame them if they did, since it's one of the most OP spells in the game, but still, I'm sick, sick sick of patches and updates I don't even hear about changing a dozen different rules without telling me. So, yeah, if anyone else has experienced this, I can get to the bottom of this issue.

Ur-Gothoz Lore Question [Dorn Quest Spoilers]

I very vaguely remember at some point someone mentioning that Ur-Gothoz is originally from another D&D setting, does anyone know anything more about this?

Also, if Dorn chooses to betray Ur-Gothoz and becomes a fallen Blackguard, what would theoretically become of him after he dies, assuming that Charname didn't become his new patron post-ascension or Charname didn't become a god at all. I am not sure if demon-worship counts as a legit faith in Kelemvor's eyes so would he treated as a False (for betraying his faith) or would he be treated as a Faithless, meaning he'd end up in the Wall of the Faithless? Or does he maybe bypass judgement and Ur-Gothoz snatches his soul away for revenge?

Magic in BG and Forgotten Realms

Hi guys, ive got a question regarding the casting of magic in the world of BG and the greater world of FR.

In BG, when spellcasters like priests, clerics or mages cast spell, they murmur incantations, which if i didn't recall wrongly, are in Latin. (See here for eg. image)

1) My first question being: Is this also the case in the rest of the FR world, or is it only unique to BG? If it's the latter, then what kind of language do spellcasters use in the FR or even D&D in general?

2) My second question relates to the difference between priests and wizards/mages.
Correct me if I'm wrong, priests can only cast their spells by chanting a prayer to their respective god. So, should they be fallen (ie. a priest who lost their god's favour), they won't be able to cast any spells. Is that right?

Whereas for wizards/arcanists in general, they do not draw their powers from their respective deities but from the Weave (or Shadow Weave). Which explains why in the novel "Elminster: The Making of a Mage", Mystra has to enlist the help of Elminster (or select her Chosen) to defeat unruly magelords. Mystra cannot directly disconnect spellcasters' access to the Weave, no matter how much she disapproves of their actions. Is that correct? Hope that makes sense! Thanks.

Solo Cavalier the easiest playthrough?

I'm currently chapter 3 at SoA and I feel like I just murder everybody without a sweat. Using only EET with level cap removed and SCS difficulty. You can get Cavalier to 100MR and/or 93DR with the best Saving Throws. Of course you can tweak abilities here and there, but this is potentially the most powerful version I think:

Cavalier Base

18/00 STR (-3TH)
18 DEX (-4AC)
18 CON (+4HP)
17 THAC0
6 AC
14 HP
12/14/13/13/15 Saving Throws

Items

30MR Purifier +5 (ToB)
20DR 1AC Defender Of Easthaven (SoA)

10MR 1ST Amulet Of Seldarine (SoA)
10MR 2AC 2ST Ring Of Gaxx (SoA)
3AC 3ST The Warder's Signet (SoA)

1ACb Full Plate Mail (BG)
1AC 1ST 1TH 5HP Helm Of Balduran (BG)
22STRb Girdle Of Fire Giant Strenght (ToB)
10HP Paladin's Bracers (SoA)
7MR Star-Strewn Boots (SoD)
25MR 1ST Cloak Of Balduran (BG)

5MR Machine Of Lum The Mad (SoA)
10HP Deck Of Many Things (SoA)
10MR 2ST -1DEX -2HP Hell Trials (SoA)
2STR STR Tome, MoLTM (BG, SoA)
2CON CON Tome, MoLTM (BG, SoA)
2DEX DEX Tome, MoLTM (BG, SoA)

40DR Hardiness (lv18, lv20 10 rounds)
25DR Armor Of Faith (lv28, 31 rounds)

97 Magic Resistance
85 Damage Reduction
10 Saving Throws
22 STRb
1 DEX
2 CON
-6 THAC0
-6 AC
23 HP

Cavalier Potential Lv28

22 STR
19 DEX
20 CON
-11 THAC0
-10 AC
194HP (233HP lv34)
97 Magic Resistance
85 Damage Reduction
-9/-7/-8/-8/-6 Saving Throws

Only thing I can see being a problem is Imprisonment spells, which you can avoid directly with Protection From Magic-scrolls or Spell Turning from Book Of Infinite Spells. Every other danger there's an common item to use I think. Soloing you can use the best equipment, not bother with squishy companions or micro management, fly through the map with with Boots of Speed and Oil Of Speed, and you're almost always very well leveled to any baddie.

Are there more powerful characters?

Deathmatch Tournament?

Got this idea from my solo Cavalier playthrough, and as there's multiplayer in the game already, has it been done, or is there a mod that lets you pit different characters/creatures against each other?

Easiest rules would be:

one window area
to the death
no time restriction
max level characters
any items they can use in the series
1 potion/scroll/wand and max 3 quick slot items

, but that would eliminate mages pretty much on get go when everybody would just use Protection From Magic scrolls, and it would become a slug fest, which my Cavalier would win no doubt.

On the other hand don't allow PfM-scrolls, and mages will time stop, imprison and so on everybody. So there should be some middle ground there.

Anybody got wbms to share?

That's the movie format for the IE games from Beamdog. I think the original movies were biks, an antique file type. But lots of games used it. Does anybody have anything from the good old days converted into wbm? Some fun game introductions? Thinking of Red Alert 2 here... I'd like some different movies for my movies folder, because as I modder I get to launch the game, like, 57 times a day for testing, and I'm just sick of whoom-shoom, logo, the Nietzsche quote... You know, "That which does not kill me, drives me nuts." Yet files with these names in the movies folder are required for Near Infinity, the modding software, to know which game it is dealing with. I can't delete the files, but I can put something else there and preserve a little sanity. So, any good stuff to spread around?

The 75 roll No-Reload/No Resurrection Challenge

Not sure how much interest there will be in this but I'm throwing it out there nonetheless!!!

RULES
- You must use a non-edited roll of 75
- You can re-roll as many times as you like
- You may not min/max any stats or edit any abilities at all
- You may not resurrect any party members
- Core rules
- Update your progress in this thread, whether it be death or success!
- Try to roleplay your character as much as possible :)
- Have fun

I'll start with Gwen, an Elven Priestess of Talos although I don't know how long she will live with her crippling low dexterity lol. She can barely equip herself and nearly takes her half an hour to do so. I took her first roll of 75, updates to come in the near future
