What race is he?

So, I like having a folder full of all kind of portraits, specially for my Black Pits parties. The thing is, a lot of times I find it hard to difference the race of some of the character portraits. I'm not always absolutely sure of their sex part of the time...

Take for example this well known in-game portrait:

image

I suppose it has to be a halfling, but that little beard sometimes makes me doubt. I keep reading that halflings can't grow beards.

If I am not the only person with this" obsession" (am I?), this could be a good thread to analyze portraits.

Custom NPC Portraits Masterthread [Spoilers, obviously]

$

Hello everyone :)

First of all, I am aware, that there already exist some threads about custom NPC portraits but I found them all to be rather confusing, so here is my attempt to make a proper masterthread where everyone can easily find whatever portrait(s) they want to use for their game.

This thread is under constant construction!
That's why I highly encourage you to post your own works and finds here (don't forget to source), so that I can add them to the startpost. So check back once in a while, in case there may be the perfect portrait you have always been looking for ;)

Here are a few highly subjective* "quality ensurance" guidelines:
1. The portraits shouldn't clash too much with the in-game art styles (i.e. too cartoony, cell-shading, b/w, etc.)
--- Exception: Complete packs with portraits for most/all NPC companions
2. No simple "facelifts" (meaning that they are only mildly photoshopped versions of the official ones; it would be nice though if someone else could make a different masterthread for these)
3. No obvious "facesteals" (i.e. popular actors, characters from other media, etc.) and joke portraits
4. They should resemble the original designs to at least some degree (i.e. don't just suggest any random drow portrait for Viconia)
*that means that there are almost certainly going to be folks who will disagree with my decisions on wether an image goes into the gallery or not

Depending on how this thread goes, I might sharpen or lighten the guidelines on the go.

Jon Irenicus subrace (SPOILERS)

$

Hello everyone, let's get straignt to business, since i do not think, that Joneleth Irenicus needs some introductions here.

1. As we all know, Baldur's Gate allows us to play as an "Elf" race, without selecting any subtype of it (Moon Elf by default?). And I question myself: which type of Elf was Jon Irenicus? Obviously, he is non-Drow, but I cant truly guess: Suldanessellar is said to be an "Elven city", nothing more specific, but on my mind, it fits Forest Elves more, yet I doubt, that Jon is Forest one (Sun/Moon Elf, perhaps?)

2.His name. I know, what it means, but I can't find any D&D Elven dictionary with actual statements about word "Irenicus", and I saw only a few matching name suffixes for name Joneleth. From which source it is exactly taken?

Just his concept is very inspiring, i would like to make something similar, but not exactly same for a character, lol.

I'm a loser... and you can too! --BG bad habits thread

Hi all,
I love BG series, but sometimes I can't help but think that playing it is just reinforcing some bad personality traits. I'm flawed, no big deal. But just for fun, i thought we could share our bad habits that BG brings out. I'll go first. Hope I'm not the only poster.

Charname always seems to be the biggest baddest character in the party. All +20 stats, cheese tactics galore. I don't really want a challenge. Just looking for some fantasy to stroke my fragile ego. How bad is it? Well, while in a romance with Viconia, Aven the Human would never let her cast energy blades, because there is a bug (on the ipad at least) which would keep her APR at 10 after they were used up. So after she was done mowing down enemies with the blades she'd keep mowing them down with slings and maces. Usually I'm fine with cheese. But when a NPC is it's wielder? No, not cool.

Things that never happen in Baldur's Gate

I remember many years ago reading a series of jokes called "Things that never happen on Star Trek":
http://www.inflection-point.com/jokes/3.htm

.. and I wondered what it would be like if applied to Baldur's Gate?

Things that never happen in Baldur's Gate:
1. Someone in a town commits a serious crime which puts everyone in a difficult dilemma, but thanks to prompt action by local authorities, the situation is promptly resolved before the arrival of charname & party.

2. Sarevok, using his Iron Throne money, pays 20,000 gold to hire a high-level assassin stationed at the Friendly Arm Inn, who uses hide in shadows and backstab to chunk the unsuspecting arriving charname beyond all recognition.

3. Charname's party members gets pissed because charname keeps taking all the good loot, they go on a strike and demand equal pay(distribution of loot) as well as the right not to be sent on a naked orc hunt the second a better party member shows up.

New Power Word spells

After just threatening Dee with Power Word 'Tickle' (in order to get the 1.3 patch released), I started thinking there's a lot of potential here with these power words. It'll be entertaining to see what you all can come up with. After presenting your newly christened power word, maybe suggest what spell level you think it should be as well. I figure 'Tickle' would probably be 2nd level as it would be pretty distracting to any enemy who wasn't a complete grump...

Using Near Infinity

I have been trying to Add backstab to a normal class ranger using near inifinity, i have changed an effect ( dagger prfoficiency ) to be backstab and copied the whole effect page to be similar to a stalker backstab effect but it still does not show up on my normal ranger. Is there anyone good with near Infinity that can tell me exactly how i can successfully add 2 x backstab on my normal class ranger ? as i cannot get it working.

Many thanks

( i know its cheating but it adds a bit of spice to the normal ranger class :) )
Also i have tried using the EEkeeper but it does not seem to be possible to add backstab with that.

As I learn more from this forum, I realize how much about the game I didn't know about. There were items, strategies and spells that could have made my life a lot easier against various monsters. There were dialogue options I had never been given. Easter Eggs I never knew about. Etc, etc.

I was interested in seeing this kind of topic ever since my boy @Quartz‌ said that he never made Crom Faeyr. So I made this thread for us all to confess our Baldur's Gate sins. Come and admit that you never completed your stronghold, you've never even heard of Kangaxx, never killed Firkraag or are still dying to know where Hull misplaced his longsword.

I'll begin:

Confession: I have never played a thief character.

Did you *actually* know?

I started posting random trivia about Baldur's Gate and Co. on the activity page, but it have become so many that I decided to start a new topic. If you have you yourself know an interesting piece of trivia, feel free to share.

Either way, here we go:

Did you know?

Alora isn't a halfling, she actually is a really short and petite gnome.

Bhaal and Cyric used to be lovers but Bhaal cheated on him with his sister which is why Cyric killed him.

Dynaheir sings "These boots are made for walking" by Nancy Sinatra because Dynaheir used to be Nancy Sinatra's old D'n'D player character.

CHARNAME isn't actually a Bhaalspawn, they were accidentally switched as a newborn with the temple's janitor's child. Alaundo's prophecy is just a fraud.

There is a squirrel with a powerful magic ring somewhere in the original Baldur's Gate.

Icewind Dale was named after Dale Ace Windy, a famous Canadian popstar from the 80s.

If you shoot a Magic Missile at Gorion in the very beginning of the original Baldur's Gate in Candlekeep, he will give you some very useful potions in return.

Adventure Y was originally supposed to be called Adventure Z but the devs reconsidered to avoid a potential legal suite from Bandai because of the similarity to Dragonball Z.

Kivan never had a wife, he just made the story up as part of his wrestling persona.

Sarevok was voiced by Jaleel White, who is most famous for his role as Steve Urkel in the 90s sitcom "Family Matters".

Nothing can stop the Smooze.

Edwin is actually a virgin, he is just overcompensating all the time.

When your familiar dies you may lose one constitution point, but if you keep it's corpse, Cromwell will forge a Katana +4, +2 bleeding damage/ round for 10 rounds from it.

There are actually no spambots on these forums, the mods just ban random people because the motherbrain tells them to do so.

If you wish to save Clara you need to choose the following dialogue options after meeting her: 2, 4, 1, 1, 3

There is a glitch that let's you one-hit Beholders, if you cast barkskin *and* stoneskin on yourself and then attack them with a Quarterstaff +1.

Gorion and Jaheira used to be a couple back in the day.

Other than powerful mages, what fighter classes pose the biggest threat to drizzt and artemis?

$

I guess you could say the finesse fighters of 5th ed are

bards with spells of attacks and healing and fighting prowess
Fighters with high dex and power from feats
Rangers with high dex and animal companions and light stealth
Rogues with sneak attack and stealth
Monks which are obvious

Strength fighters would be

fighters, barbarians, paladins, clerics (with high strength and buffing)

After reading the books mages cause major problems for artemis and drizzt but what about the classes listed based on their stats in dnd?

A Warrior's Tastes in Launchers

$
0
0
When I make a warrior type character who I plan to have use launcher weapons frequently I usually prefer to pick one of two weapons to put proficiency points into: Slings or Crossbows. What I really don't get about this is that it seems like a majority of people prefer to use longbows and shortbows instead. What confuses me further is that those who prefer longbows and shortbows seem to frequently say that crossbows stink. As for slings... I can't seem to recall hearing about anyone even discuss slings on a warrior. It baffles me that relatively few people seem to like these two weapons... I think they are quite awesome! I actually think longbows and shortbows are, while not terrible options, highly overrated and slightly inferior in most ways to slings and crossbows.

Crossbows are probably my favorite launcher weapons. They are all around solid options in both BG1 and BG2. In BG1 there are two respectable launchers: the Army Scythe and the Guide. The Army Scythe may be a bit lackluster in terms of THAC0 and damage output, but I think it makes up for it with the extra APR it gives. The Guide is incredibly accurate and can be really helpful for those hard to hit enemies. By swapping both of these crossbows depending on your situation your warrior is well prepared for just about anything. The ammo for the Crossbow, while not as wide ranging a selection as available for the longbow and shortbow, is still quite respectable. Bolts of Lightning are quite capable and plentiful, if a bit lackluster. Bolts of Biting are the real power ammo for the crossbow being both plentiful and possibly the most potent of poisons money can buy. Bolts +2 are the best for added accuracy, but are unfortunately quite limited in supply. In BG1 crossbows are a solid pick, but admittedly somewhat lacking when compared to longbows and shortbows; this changes in BG2 however. In BG2 there is no shortage of good crossbows to pick from, but there is only one crossbow that truly bears mentioning: Firetooth. I would almost say that Firetooth is the king of all launchers in the series. It has a huge THAC0 bonus, a huge damage bonus (including additional fire damage), unlimited ammo, and, as if that was not enough, it has an enchantment bonus high enough to hit just about anything. Just when you think you couldn't dream of more, Cespenar upgrades it to make it even better! The ammo you get in BG2 gets an upgrade as well. Thanks to the craftsmanship of various fish, you now have access to stunning bolts. The Paralytic Bolts of the Sahuagin, while in somewhat short supply, do more base damage than your typical bolt (1d10) and stun those they hit for 6 rounds unless they save vs. spell. The Kuo-Toa Bolts are very similar, but do even higher base damage (2d6) yet have a slightly shorter stun duration of about 3 rounds (actually 20 seconds, which is a tad longer) with the same save vs. spell to avoid. (There are some errors in the descriptions of these two bolts. What I say here is there actual function.) The only issue with the crossbow bolts in BG2 is that most of them only count as +1 weapons so many things are immune to them. If that isn't enough for you then how about using the pantaloon ammo? Things will die... Fast... Guaranteed...

Slings are probably the most underrated launcher. They are kinda boring for the most part in terms of added effects. They may not do much other than add THAC0 and damage, but they do that better than any other launcher. In BG1 there is only one sling really worth mentioning: Arla's Dragonbane. It is a mighty +3 sling. The bullets of choice would probably be +2 bullets. Slings are also the only launcher that get a strength bonus to damage. In BG2:EE all slings will now have the strength bonus to damage as well. There are 3 slings that I consider the best. The Sling of Everard's main claim to fame is its unlimited +5 ammo. It's high enchantment level is good for hitting creatures immune to lower enchantments, but it does much less damage than most of the other slings. The Lupine Sling is no joke. It may only be +2 but that disease effect it has is unique among slings and makes it worth keeping. The disease lasts 1 turn and slows those hit while doing 1 damage per round. The nice thing about this is there is no save vs. the disease meaning if you are lucky you can disable even the toughest of foes. Probably the best sling, however is Erinne Sling. It Is highly accurate and damaging, but its real strength is the +4 bullets it makes. The +4 bullets are the uniquely highest enchanted ammo out there. I know slings are almost completely bereft of versatility, but they have incredible raw accuracy and damage output which I think makes them more than viable throughout the entire series.

Make no mistake; I am not saying longbows and shortbows are bad. Far from it. In BG1 I would even say that they may very well be the best of the launchers. They have amazing versatility in terms of added effects, well beyond any of the other launchers. They can do lots of damage and are quite accurate. There are plenty of good launchers for them. They can even do things that no other launchers can do with such things as Arrows of Dispelling and Arrows of Detonation. They have a great APR too. The problem I have with them comes when BG2 comes around... In BG2 almost all their ammo suffers a mysterious nerf plague which makes the iron shortage of BG1 look like a joke. Bolts were affected to some extent too, but not nearly to the extent that arrows were, while bullets were completely unaffected. (I swear I will make a mod to reverse the mysterious ranged nerf plague of BG2. Some day...) The longbows and shortbows themselves are a bit questionable in BG2 as well. Among all launchers they alone suffer from the nerf plague. Bonuses to hit are plentiful but the bonuses to damage have mysteriously disappeared for the most part. Longbows are the only launchers ranged weapons without any unlimited ammo specimens at all! Shortbows are barely any better, but they are at least passable and Gesen's bow is quite good.

Eech... I made an unholy wall of text didn't I...

Which Non-Recruitable NPCs Do You Wish Were Recruitable?

$
0

This is inspired by @booinyoureyes‌ very interesting thread, http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/30485/which-bg1-minor-npc-would-you-have-liked-to-have-returned-in-bg2-joinable-or-otherwise/p1 , but the point of this thread is simply what NPCs do you wish you could recruit? From BG1 or 2.

My personal picks:

Brage: This poor captain of the guard who found himself a cursed sword and went on a berzerker rage through Nashkel is IDEAL for a good party, especially if he had his own quest line, helping him to redeem himself. The priest Nalin actually says that rather than executing him, he should instead find atonement. If you had a party reputation of 15+ (or whatever number you get the heroic title at) then I could easily see Nalin saying that he should join you, since you're a group of heroic adventurers with which Brage can do a great deal of good.

Firebead Elvenhair: Yeah yeah, this guy might be considered a little old for adventuring life, but gosh dangit there aren't enough old wizards in BG anyway! Besides, if you've ever fought him, you know he's no pushover, so for BG1 at least, he could be a handy party mage. I suppose he might join you because he knows you, as a service to Gorion, or something.

The Surgeon: Davaeorn's brother, this guy appears to be a mage, yet casts divine magic to heal you. A good cleric\mage dual could be a handy party member, and since you yourself want to deal with Davaeorn, it makes good sense that you might ask him to join you, once you have evidence to prove you're after Davaeorn. All in all, it could be an interesting character with ties to the main story. And he could have an awesome backstory and\or conversations, in which we learn his real name and more info about his youth and Davaeorn's past.

Those're my ideas. What can you guys come up with?
