Was anyone ever be able to kill Terminsel?

CLUAConsole:CreateCreature("jatermin")

I will not spoiler his true identity, but he is probably the most powerful magician in the game.
(If you do not have well armed and prepared group on high levels, you will be dead within a few seconds.)
His defeat is challenge itself, but killing him is almost impossible because he is immune even against cheats.

But everything can be killed...

Dual classing enhancement - not a request

$

Seeing a few threads recently on dual classing, I thought I would spin up my feature requests that I don't think can be implemented within the current game engine, unless paying down the technical debt that Trent said has been occupying the team of late has had a signifiant refactoring of the engine. Still, in the idea world, I would like...

1) Per PnP, there were very few restrictions on dual-classing. I want to dual-class any primary class into any other - although would be happy to accept no dualing from a fighter into another clear warrior class, such as Paladin to Ranger. Monk to Sorcerer should be well within scope though ;~)

2) Given the limitation that we can only dual along the lines of a valid multi-class, I want to dual-again! There should be twelve valid routes to triple-classing (if you happen to have the magic stats):

fighter -> cleric -> mage
fighter -> mage -> cleric
fighter -> mage -> thief
fighter -> thief -> mage
cleric -> fighter -> mage
cleric -> mage -> fighter
mage -> fighter -> thief
mage -> fighter -> cleric
mage -> cleric -> fighter
mage -> thief -> fighter
thief -> fighter -> mage
thief -> mage -> fighter

The PnP rules said you could "dual-class" as many times as you liked, as long as you satisfied the 17-stats requirements for additional classes. Indeed, in classic 1st Edition AD&D, the Bard was a (very different) class that was available /only/ as a third class - the original prestige class!

I am probably more interested in (2) than (1), but suspect the file format of the game engine means that neither would be possible without totally rewriting the character code and data structures.

(I do remember using paladin->ranger silliness in the classic Gold Box games)

Carsomyr has been included into the "60 Iconic Weapons from fiction" list

Status effects

@NIV5T suggested, that we can make a table containing the various negative status effects and their counter effects. A nice idea, it's confusing sometimes what will shield against from various stun/hold effects for example. Here i start to make the table, feel free to give advices/corrections in the comments below, i edit the OP accordingly.

The Elven Party

$

So I got a new phone and lost all of my old saves. So I started a new character: an elven ranger. Rolled a 95, so quite happy with him. By the end of BG1 he should have:

S19
Dex20
Con18
Int10
Wis17
Cha19

BG1 I have...

Archer (Charname)
Jaheira
Khalid
Xan
Coran
Kivan
(briefly taking Neera for her quest and ditching her for being so rude at the end)

So all elves and half elves.

What would be best for BG2 to keep this going?

Archer (Charname)
Jaheira (halfelf)
Aerie (elf)
Neera (half-elf)

This leaves me with 2 slots. I need a thief...so what should I take?

Options:

(1) Haer'Dalis (He is a tiefling, but at least uses the elven character image so he would like like he fits in. Plus the bard song he gets in throne of bhaal, stacked with archer bonuses, should make Charname stupidly powerful)
(2) Wilson (A horrible character, but with a ranger and a druid in the party, he would fit thematically)
(3) Jan (He is a thief...and another mage. So three mages and an archer would bring on some serious hurt. I suppose because Aerie worships a gnomish god, he would sort of fit the party as well)

Anyone got any advice to keep this 'elven' party playthrough on track thematically when it reaches BG2?

A psionic class?

I know there was a discussion about what classes/kits should be added next, but anyway.

What about a psionic class?

There were psi characters in Dark Sun and I there are also some (or a lot) in the Forgotten Realms
and Planescape. The class that I have seen (in the Psionic's Handbook?) was a bit suicidal, If I Recall Correctly,
having a 10% chance to die when using the Desintegrate Power, but at least it was another way to have
non-divine healing. And it's always nice to have that in D&D.

The psionic classes in 3E also weren't that bad and there also was some psi in 1E AD&D, I think.

Companion team vs effective team.

Make a group, storyline.
Make a group, what you need to finish it.

Storyline:
CHARNAME FIGHTER
Viconia - Romance
Imoen - Most caring person about CHARNAME, she never leaves him does not matter what.
Hexxat - Not a storyline but i do like her ways.
Aerie - Back up cleric and much fun with Viconia when them argue.
Jahiera - Good romance full of fights.
--Remove Jahiera put Sarevok in tob.

Effective:
CHARNAME FIGHTER
Viconia - Top cleric with hight fighing abilities.
Jen - Thief skill mostly and bonus for his class.

Half-Orcs: PnP vs BG/IWD

$

I was checking the Complete Book of Humanoids yesterday to help my DM build a NPC for our PnP game and had a little surprise checking the Half-Orcs max and min stats. Here they follow:

Adjustments: +1 STR, +1 CON, -2 CHA

STR: 18

DEX: 17

CON: 19

INT: 17

WIS: 14

CHA: 12

So, why in BG and IWD can we get way beyond these numbers (specially STR that is sort of gamebreaking)?

If those bonus and penalties are to be applied after the stated numbers above, should the Half-Orc be allowed a max of 20 natural Constitution?

Is there another source that overcomes CBoH and I'm not aware of?

Thanks!

Inquisidor x Wizard Slayer

So, who's the ultimate wizard killing machine?

We won't add Carsomyr or Bala's Axe into this thrend, because it would be unfair with the WS to say the least.

Inquisitor have bonus in saving thrown (for being a Paladin), a very effective Dispel Magic, True Sight (for naughty Mislead and Improved Invisibility and Shadow Door), and can wear tons of gears.

Wizard Slayer have a natural MR, natural Miscast Magic at will (and with ranged weapons), can achieve Grandmastery in every weapon, have all the ready-to-go gear (helmet, shield, boots, weapons and armors), can be of any alignment (may not be a big deal if you're more a power player then a roleplayer), can be of any race (gaining shorty save throws or starting with 19 Strenght/Constitution), don't need to spend stat-points in Charisma and Wisdom, advance level faster and are able to Dual-Class.

A little help? :)

IMHO the best of both world would be a Dwarf Inquisitor. But it is not an allowed combination.

Unpopular opinions

An idea has come to me to make a thread where we can share unpopular opinions about things in BG and other IE games.

1. Cernd is far from being useless NPC.
In fact, he has tons of high-level druid spells and if CHARNAME is not a druid, than by not having a second class Cernd offers a lot of variety in lvl 6-7 spells if compared to Jaheira. If use the high-level druid spells right, almost any fight in SoA becomes a lot easier.

2. Darts can be a good choice as a ranged weapon for a fighter.
Thalantyr's shop in BG1 has tons of useful darts, Sorcerous Sundries make it even better. There's an unlimited +3 dart on the first level of the Watcher's Keep, available not long after escaping from the Irenicus dungeon. Darts provide 3 APR and with addition APR from specialization and fighter class your darts stay a wonderful weapon from the Candlekeep and to the Hell.

3. 2 thieves in a party is not too much.
I prefer to focus on setting traps and dispelling illusions with one of them and to hide in shadows for backstabs with another. Also, there're Open Locks and Disarm Traps skills. There're always multi-class options available. For example, your character can be a multiclass fighter/thief with amazing backstabs while Tiax or Jan Jansen is focused on setting traps to the place you lure your enemies to. Or maybe a half-orc assassin for backstabs and poison weapon and Hexxat for other thieving skills.

4. Mazzy's relatively low starting STR is not a problem.
She has innate Strength spell, there're lots of STR-enhancing items in BG2, so that leaves you with a shorty fighter (and thus all saving throws bonuses) who has a chance to become GM in any weapon you like (or choose a standard short bow proficiency providing 5 APR with the Tuigan bow).

5. Keep trying using every and each consumables in any fight if you have any.
You won't believe how easier it will become if your fighters nearly always have 22-23 STR for fights and get their saving throws improved drastically. Wands will often be enough to defeat even bosses.

Carry on! Share the things that are relatively not popular among BG fans.

Dispel VS Remove magic.

It seems like most of the stuff I read is about the efficacy of Dispel magic. I know the Inquisitor ability is extremely potent. But other than that remove magic seems like a better spell just by looking at the spell descriptions. Just wondering what you guys thought.

A plea on behalf of cleric/thieves everywhere

$

Please let us use or defining ability - the 'thief' skill (disarm traps/pick locks) - whenever we want, just like a regular thief, or mage/thief, or fighter/mage/thief, or fighter/thief, or dual class variant of the above, or ...

Feedback from the SoD livestream is that despite significant engine revisions, the cleric/thief will still not have access to this commonly used skill on the primary user interface. That is unfortunate, but given hotkeys I can live with that if you at least fix it suddenly becoming a magic ability that does not function in no-magic zones, or when other effects cripple magic abilities, now that it has scrolled onto the special-abilities page, but /only/ for cleric/thieves.

Beamdog engine?

(Perhaps this has been brought up before, I don't know, but..)

To the developers:

I wonder if you ever intend to create your own game engine?
I remember recently seeing in some thread, Trent Oster saying that "the technical debt has been paid".
As someone who works in software development(to some extent games, but nothing close to game engine-refactoring) I understand that you do not want to pay the technical debt, that is to say, spend time, money and effort refactor and object-orient all night long for a long time only to switch to something new in the near future.
(That makes no sense programming-wise or business-wise, I think)
Will Beamdog continue to use the Infinity Engine for a long time?
There are probably a lot of factors at play which I do not understand at all(the business-side of fact that it's Bioware's engine, the inner workings of the engine, fan opinions, the relationship with WotC, etc.), but to me it would seem like a huge advantage to build a new engine:
- Get rid of old code that's been bothering you for 15 years.
- Get a chance to rethink the architecture based on lessons learned.
- Make it even more moddable.
- Shorten future contents development time by adapting everything to modern methods.
- 3D(Not necessarily perspective-wise 3D like Neverwinter Nights, but for example a locked-camera perspective-wise de facto 2D leveraging 3Ds advantage of using models instead of pre-rendered sprites, etc.)
- Ingrained cheese removal(Although then I would be scared of beholders..)

Is it like, you want to do that but it's too expensive and/or resource-consuming, or you just don't want to do that?

(I have been playing BG/IWD since it was first released, but my understanding of the Infinity Engine is limited to haphazardly opening random files in a text editor last week..)

How one Christmas can change everything. An amazing story of one of The Darkest Day creators

While surfing the web today, I've found a story I couln't believe in at first. This is a part of an autobiography of Max Schnur, one of the creators of the Darkest Day mod for Baldur's Gate 2. http://www.teambg.org/thedarkestday/

This unbelievable story started on December, 25, 1998.

Patch 1.4 Question

So I feel like I need closure on a certain issue, and I'd appreciate an official response from @Dee, @Amber_Scott, whoever.

With everything that's changed at Beamdog over the past year, do the devs have any plans to use patch 1.4 to change or update BG2:EE's story content?

If that's not on the agenda, and the game's just going to be what it is, that's fine too - I'd just like to know for certain, one way or the other. Three years is a very long time to be hanging onto false hopes, and I'm ready to move on.

So I only have room for two on my device at the moment and I plan to keep BG:EE on because it has my save for my Bard I want to transfer to SoD. Should I get IWD:EE on there as secondary or BG2:EE so I can run a full Black Pits run?

Enhancing Fighters

$

I've been thinking lately about how the Fighter class could be expanded beyond its tank-point-click-smash existence and how to differentiate it from its Warrior brethren.

One idea that occurs to me is the standard fantasy trope of the skilled/experienced warrior training his comrades or marshalling them in combat (think Jon Snow with the Watch, or Boromir sparring with Merry and Pippin).

Is there any scope within the engine for Fighters (and I mean specifically Fighters rather than Paladins, Rangers, etc) to gain some skill or passive trait to represent this?

Perhaps an aura similar to a (properly implemented) Bard's song that develops as she levels up?

You'd have to properly differentiate the Bard's abilities too, which would be a challenge, but I think it might be worth it.

Maybe to represent the training aspect she could have an ability which she can "cast" on a teammate, granting the ally proficiency (or greater) in a particular weapon type?

Thoughts or other ideas welcome...
