Dual-class assassin question

$

I have a question regarding the assassin's poison ability. If an assassin duals to another class (fighter or cleric), can she use her poison ability on non-thief weapons (e.g., 2-H sword or war hammer)? Or is the poison ability, like the backstab ability, restricted to thief-permitted weapons only?

Thanks!

Hi

I have BG1 EE installed on my laptop with some mods, and I wonder if it's possible to copy/paste the game folder on my other PC so I could play without re-installing the mods ? Its not a long list but the game is just perfect for me like that and I dont remember exactly what mods are installed...

Thank you

Post your Nightmare Mode experiences here, from challenges to fun moments.

Here's me killing Niz, the Black Dragon in Suldanessellar.

Berserker 7/Cleric
Kensai 9/Mage
Inquisitor
Assassin 9/Fighter
Sorcerer

Apparantly Nightmare mode gives monsters 3 * Normal HP +80, so he should have 680 HP. I managed to deal 686, so that's pretty accurate. The reason I used such cautious tactics was to ensure easy tallying of damage.

I don't they exist in the original game. Is it difficult/possible to add them?
I found this image recently and had to have it as my cat familiar portrait, just so darn cute.
p.s. how do you post images in between text? I only know attaching files give small thumbnails.

Cheers

I realize there are other NPC/PC portrait threads but its difficult to browse 30+ pages if you are only looking for specific NPCs hence this thread. I only have BG2EE unfortunately but if anyone wants to make equivalent threads for BGEE characters feel free.

Feel free to post images you feel are good Jaheira portrait replacements here.
Please don't stray too far from believable likeness to the original portrait please.

I'll open up with these two below.

I'll open up with these two I like very much, they have a whiff of 'fallen noble' about them. I felt the original portraits completely denied any sense of her aristocratic background but her lineage is perhaps the most decisive factor in her character so definitely a miss step.

I'll admit i never liked the original Imoen portrait she looks absentminded which doesn't convey her tragedy. This one might be too melancholic but I think it suites her somehow.

So I'm pretty excited to have a new Spectre 2 to play on as my ipad has been struggling for a while.

I've gone and used BiG World to apply all the mods as I've never tried a heavily modded game.

However, I'm struggling with a few things:

- screen resolution:
For some reason the game is adding black strips on either side even when I found the file and adjusted it manually to the native resolution of 1920x1280 (which at least fixed the problem of the different menus covering up character icons and the buttons on the left side). How can I use the full screen realestate?

- mouseless play
When I press one finger on the screen it makes a box instead of moving the screen like it does on ipad. Is there any way to change that?

- tablet behaviour
Can I add the buttons that you find on a tablet such as the interactable item highlighter button and the select group button so that I can play without the keyboard?

Thanks for any insight :)

Sorc vs Wild Mage vs Cleric/Mage – 2016 Edition, with SCS

Hi all,

I thought for the new year I'd bring up the age old debate of which class is the strongest "pure" spellcaster. Many of you may be on break from college/school/work over the winter holidays and playing BG again so why not? I pretty much consider SCS mandatory now to bring any sense of challenge to the game - your mileage may vary.

One thing I will say is that I'd like to hear views on how these characters actually progress through the game in a party of 5-6 people e.g. how useful they are from beginning, middle to end. One of the tough – but in my opinion fair – aspects of SCS is that the Robe of Vecna is moved to the 5th level of Watchers keep which isn't realistically going to be attempted on higher difficulty modes until you've got at the very least around 5,500,000 – 6,500,000 xp I'd say.

First - the Cleric/Mage. It's a great combination but seems like a bit of a late bloomer and like most casters really only begins to properly kick ass once you can use lots of level 9 spells. Unfortunately for the C/M this is around the 6,000,000m XP mark well in to TOB. For me personally the key spells from the Divine side of things are Flamestrike, Bolt of Glory (Ignores MR), the defensive buffs (e.g. free action, death ward, NPP), Harm, Heal, Firestorm (ignores MR), Sunray, Storm of Vengeance and Implosion (ignores MR). I personally use the Nerfed version of harm which does 150+ damage.

Sure, you can use all your buffs to give yourself a great Thac0, wear good equipment and whack things around but is this something that (a) needs to be done and (b) can't be compensated for through smart use of a greater selection of Arcane Spells. To me Implosion really stands out as one of the few MR Resisting physical damage spells but it still can't be used on an SCS Lich with an improved Invisibility effect right? When I'm using SCS I often find myself in a position when fighting a nasty lich that I'm able to get all of their spell defences away in a time stop but because of their judicial use of combat protections (in some cases granting immunity to all elemental damage) I'll have to wait till the Timestop's over before I get dispel their illusions and actually breach them to hurt them with damage spells.

IMO one of the greatest aspects of a pure caster is the ability to use Project Image for greater spell efficiency and this is something the Sorcerer does best. With a maximum potential for 10 level 7 spells if using all of the best end-game equipment a Sorc essentially has quick access to his entire spellbook an extra 10 times. One of the advantages of the Sorcerer's "flexibility" is that if you want to use Project Image a lot (e.g. more than 5-6 times in a big long fight) and still use lots of other level 7 spells you'll be able to, though the fights where this is actually the case could probably be counted on one-hand. He's an early bloomer and will start being able to use Improved Alacrity/Time Stop at about 3,000,000 xp. I find that spell choices can start to get really tight from about level 7 onwards for the Sorcerer and level 9 in particular is a hard one. I'd personally go for (Timestop, Shapechange, Imprisonment, Chain Contingency) but you still miss really good spells like Wish and Spellstrike. Level 8 and 7 are a little less crowded but 6 is a tough one too. Foes that have partial invisibility can have their brains gobbled by a Projected Image Mindflayer provided they don't have protection from magical weapons so I don't really see what the Cleric's choice of "physically" oriented buff spells can compensate for that Arcane spells can't. Leave enemies that don't deserve this kind of gobbling to fighters imo. Hell, if you don't care about the loot just use Imprison on them.

And then we come to the Wild Mage. I'd argue that the Wild Mage definitely has the hardest start because of bad rolls (though admittedly you can save scum to NRD high level spells earlier than you're supposed to!). To make matters worse:

(a) Chaos Shields of different types no longer stack in EE (e.g. ordinary + improved Chaos Shield) though this is somewhat compensated for by the +15 Circlet added late in the game by TOB
(b) Chaos shields of the same types no longer stack in Sequencers/Contingencies in EE (fair enough)

The new robe added by EE which grants Chaos Shield also "sets" the status and will not stack with spell Chaos shields. Therefore, at 3,000,000 XP, the highest legit +to your rolls you can get at the end of SoA is 18 (level) + 25 (Improved Chaos Shield) = +43, whereas before without using Chain Contingency cheese you would have been able to get 18 (level) + 25 (Improved Chaos Shield) + 15 (Chaos Shield) = +58. When you've hit the TOB level cap you'll therefore cap at +71 to your rolls which is OK though I wouldn't use an NRD in life or death situations. For reference, the EE Wild Surge table from 71 onwards is as follows:

71 Fireball spell centered on target
72 Flesh to Stone spell on target
73 Spell takes effect as normal, and caster is recuperated as if rested
74 Heal spell centered on caster
75 Target dizzy
76 Sunfire spell centered on target (caster unaffected)
77 Target held
78 Target blinded
79 Target charmed
80 Gems created on target
81 Target’s movement rate doubled
82 Random treasure created on target
83 Target polymorphed into squirrel
84 Silence 15-Foot Radius centered on target
85 Target’s sex changed
86 Fake explosion (no damage) centered on target
87 Cow falls from sky, lands on target
88 Target dizzy
89 Spell has 60-foot radius at target
90 Stinking Cloud centered on target
91 Target is itchy
92 Caster’s Hit Points doubled
93 Target held
94 Target hastened
95 80% of gold on target is destroyed
96 Spell cast at double effectiveness
97 Spell cast, -4 to target’s Saving Throw
98 Target’s color changed
99 Spell cast at double level
100 Spell cast normally

6 of those involve casting the spell normally so you'll have about a 76% chance success rate with NRD under ordinary EE rules. A lot of them suck though, so personally, were I to play the game again, I'd modify the Chaos Shield and Improved Chaos shield spells to increment rather than set and make it so that the Wildmage Robe stacks with the spells as well. That way, at the end of SoA you'd be able to get +18 (level) + 15 (Wildmage Robe) + 15 (Chaos Shield) + 25 (Improved Chaos Shield) = +73 and NRD would be useful for most of TOB, and then in the end-game at max level and with the circlet you can choose between wearing the Robe of Vecna (+86) for a little bit of risk or the wild mage robe (+101) for complete certainty with NRD.

Personally, I think that it's fairly even between the Sorc and the Wild Mage, though overall Sorc is still top dog.

Your views welcome!

Edit: Goes without saying that I'd consider the best form of Cleric/Mage the Gnome/Illusionist Variety for them extra spells.

the greatest retardation of ADD is the theif class.

Custom NPC Portraits Masterthread [Spoilers, obviously]

$

Hello everyone :)

First of all, I am aware, that there already exist some threads about custom NPC portraits but I found them all to be rather confusing, so here is my attempt to make a proper masterthread where everyone can easily find whatever portrait(s) they want to use for their game.

This thread is under constant construction!
That's why I highly encourage you to post your own works and finds here (don't forget to source), so that I can add them to the startpost. So check back once in a while, in case there may be the perfect portrait you have always been looking for ;)

Here are a few highly subjective* "quality ensurance" guidelines:
1. The portraits shouldn't clash too much with the in-game art styles (i.e. too cartoony, cell-shading, b/w, etc.)
--- Exception: Complete packs with portraits for most/all NPC companions
2. No simple "facelifts" (meaning that they are only mildly photoshopped versions of the official ones; it would be nice though if someone else could make a different masterthread for these)
3. No obvious "facesteals" (i.e. popular actors, characters from other media, etc.) and joke portraits
4. They should resemble the original designs to at least some degree (i.e. don't just suggest any random drow portrait for Viconia)
*that means that there are almost certainly going to be folks who will disagree with my decisions on wether an image goes into the gallery or not

Depending on how this thread goes, I might sharpen or lighten the guidelines on the go.

Favored Enemy - What's Your Choice?

$
0
0
I considered making this a poll, but I think there's probably too many choices to include, especially taking the whole series into account. Anyways...

When you play a Ranger, what's your preference when it comes to the Favored Enemy feature? Speaking for myself, I tend to go with giant spiders in the first game, because Phase Spiders and especially Sword Spiders are especially dangerous enemies, and since they're also quite common, the more damage you can inflict on them, the better. For the sequel, there's obviously a whole new selection available. For SOA, I tend to go with golems, since my Rangers tend to be either Archers or Stalkers. Since golems are immune to backstab and clay golems are immune to piercing damage, they still cause some serious problems, so that's where I want the extra damage. On the rare occasion I start in TOB, I'd probably go with demons, since there isn't much left that can threaten you, and it'd make level three of Watcher's Keep a fair bit easier.

So, what are your choices, guys?

EE/SCS/no-reload challenges #1: What is a solid way to not die to a Beholder?

$

With the current BG2EE build and current SCS, how can I reliably NOT be killed while attacking beholders and elder orbs?

- assume no Shield of Cheese [I mod it out]
- assume full party [pick any NPCs] - bonus points to do it wihout a Berserker
- if helpful, assume mage variant PC [Sorcerer, F/M etc.]
- assume that you start in sight of the Beholder (i.e. no sending summons without risk)

--
[Note: I heard that Spell Shield used to protect against Beholder antimagic rays? Is that true? How about Spell Immunity: Abjuration? How about potions to lower saves? But what about an elder ord casting Imprisonment (and without a Rage available)? etc. etc.]

Proceed.

Killing Kangaxx with Flasher Master Bruiser Mates

$
0
0
I have just realized that it is possible to beat Kangaxx without using any scrolls or spell protections, at low levels, just by using a weird trick with Jan's Flasher Master Bruiser Mates, the peculiar little skulls that people barely ever use, because of their pitiful damage and low enchantment level. I refer specifically to Kangaxx's demilich form, but the flashers should be just as capable of defeating his lich form.

First, some statistics. The flashers do 1d2+1 damage. They have a stun on hit effect that lasts for 12 seconds, with a save at -1 to avoid the stun. The stun effect does not bypass magic resistance, but has a spell level of zero, meaning it bypasses all spell level immunities. Kangaxx is immune to spell levels 1 to 9, but is not immune to stun. But the flashers have an enchantment level of 1, and Kangaxx can only by harmed by weapons with an enchantment of +4 or more. Jan has 1 base APR, or 2 if he uses the Light Crossbow of Speed. Under normal circumstances, Jan cannot even hit Kangaxx in his demilich form with his flashers.

However, there are two tricks that together allow Jan to hit Kangaxx with his flashers and stunlock him with a high chance of success. I have tested this and it works as intended, though I have yet to beat him with it. But if we have the right setup, it should be possible to defeat Kangaxx using an approach based on flashers.

The recipe is thus:
-Jan and a bunch of flashers (one stack of 20 should be sufficient)
-Firetooth +4 (the crossbow, not the dagger)
-One casting of Improved Haste
-One casting of Polymorph Self
-One casting of Shocking Grasp
-The War Hammer +1, +4 vs Giantkin, and somebody to use it (no pips required)
-The Flame Tongue, and somebody to use it (no pips required)
-And, of course, a way to beat Kangaxx's lich form, if the flasher method does not work.

All this can be easily obtained right out of the first dungeon.

Jan casts Polymorph Self, shapeshifts into a spider, and casts Shocking Grasp via a sequencer or a scroll. He makes on attack, expending the Shocking Grasp attack and allowing him to use normal weapons. He equips Firetooth and his flashers. We cast Improved Haste on him. He now has 8 APR with the flashers. Firetooth is there for the THAC0 bonus, but any other crossbow would work fine as well.
We have one person with bad AC stand next to Kangaxx. Going unarmored or wearing Missile Attraction +2 will work fine.
When Kangaxx comes out in his demilich form, he will spend his first round using the Demilich Wail, which we can survive without spell protections if we make our save. After that, he will start casting Imprisonment, and the only way to avoid it is to use spell protections or a scroll of Protection from Magic or Protection from Undead. In order to survive after the first round, we must kill or disable Kangaxx within about six seconds.

Normally, we can't hit Kangaxx with the flashers. But if we target our high-AC character with the flashers, the flashers will land a hit, explode, and affect Kangaxx as an area effect. Note that the flashers use a unique projectile that, unlike a normal Skull Trap, will not affect the party. We are basically attacking our own party so Kangaxx will be hit indirectly, while our own party will be safe from the flashers.

Kangaxx has a save vs. spell of 4. With the flashers' save penalty of -1, he should have a 75% or 80% chance of avoiding it. Jan will hit our target character 8 times in that first round unless he rolls a critical miss, which means Kangaxx's chance of getting stunned is equal to 1-0.75^8 or 1-0.80^8, which is about an 80% to 90% chance of stunning him. If we fail to stun him, he imprisons us. If we succeed, we can then try to keep him in stun lock by continuing to fire flashers after him, while the rest of the party attacks with the War Hammer +1, +4 vs. Giantkin and the Flame Tongue, or other +4 or +5 weapons if we have them. We hit automatically, so even at 1 base APR, we could take him down within 5 rounds. Kangaxx's chances of escaping stunlock within that time are very low.

Testing found that Kangaxx could in fact be stunned by the flashers, though he only took 1 or 2 damage from the hits, as Firetooth's fire damage bonus has a spell level of 6, which Kangaxx is immune to. I have not used this trick to beat him yet, but he can be stunned with flashers if we attack indirectly.

This means Kangaxx can be beaten at low levels without the defenses we would normally require. Jan and his flashers have tremendous potential if we turn him into a spider, and there's actually a good reason to wear Missile Attraction +2.

Any thoughts?
