What Am I Missing Here?

Right, so this character has Mastery of Long Bows, and has one equipped. However according to this window, I'm only receiving -2 to THAC0 instead of the -3 it claims I should be.

Also, do the bonuses from the Archer kit apply as Missile Adjustment?

http://s2.postimg.org/8nghzbxyx/proferror.jpg

Mighty confusing.

Here's my WIEDU list though I can't fathom which mod would cause this (possibly True Grandmastery from Kit Revisions??)

Advice requested about spirit animal abilities

Hey, I was thinking of creating a totemic druid character, and I would appreciate some general tips about the spirit animals.

@bengoshi , Wasn't that you who did a solo run as a totemic druid and became kind of an expert on the class?

What I'm looking for is tips about which spirit animals are best for which enemies, like "Use Snake against mages because his poison will interrupt their spells", "Use Bear against heavily armored melee fighters", Use Wolf against archers because he can get to them the fastest", and that sort of thing.

My favorite spirit animal is Lion, but from studying the ability table, it seems like the other three animals are better as far as combat ability. Is there anything Lion does better than the other three?

I've lost the link to the spirit animal abilities table, so I'd also appreciate if anyone can repost that here.

One of my favorite enhancements provided by the EE's is that they fixed the spirit animal ability so that you can control which one you summon, instead of getting a random animal. Great job, Beamdog.

Things you have always wondered about

This is kind of the reverse of the Did You Know? -thread. Share any questions you might have about the series, big or small, that have always puzzled you and you've never gotten an answer to. It can range from anything, from the story behind an item or a character, to bigger, speculative questions regarding the plot or lore. And yes, I do realize that a lot of these questions could just be solved by a simple Google search, I think it would be more fun to collect them under this thread, just for the sake of discussion.

Here are are a few things that have always intrigued me
- In one of the houses in the Bridge District, you run into a band of adventurers (one of them is called Valeria, I think.) They are automatically hostile and leave behind no item of lore hinting at their purpose. Who are these people? Are they connected to some quest I do not know of?
- Speaking of the Bridge District, in Reijek Hidesman's basement, you run into a mage called Vellin Dahn who makes a menacing statement about 'commanding your death' and then promptly teleports away, leaving behind a couple of ghasts, a bone golem and three Rune Assassins for you to deal with. Who is this guy? What about the assassins? Could they be connected to the Twisted Rune, as implied by their name? This brings me to my next question
- Apart from being a cool fight and yielding you the best mage item in the game, is there any lore or backstory to the Twisted Rune that I do not know of?

What do Clerics actually DO? Advice on spells

I need healing. So I bring a cleric around when I play. But in combat, they are usually just a buffer before and then a bad fighter later. They are basically in my party just to heal, cast restoration and occasionally cast chaotic commands once in a blue moon.

I end up getting Anomen so he can hit things or Aerie so she can use mage spells when they are not healing, essentially ignoring most of what it means to be a cleric. It seems wasteful, especially when I want to take Viconia for my next playthrough.

In other words... I suck at using clerics.

What spells (like debuffs or damage dealers) should I be using IN combat? I don't mean buffs or stuff like Defensive Harmony, but things that can be used in the heat of the battle that might turn the tide of combat?

Any advice on using priests would be welcome.

Did you *actually* know?

I started posting random trivia about Baldur's Gate and Co. on the activity page, but it have become so many that I decided to start a new topic. If you have you yourself know an interesting piece of trivia, feel free to share.

Either way, here we go:

Did you know?

Alora isn't a halfling, she actually is a really short and petite gnome.

Bhaal and Cyric used to be lovers but Bhaal cheated on him with his sister which is why Cyric killed him.

Dynaheir sings "These boots are made for walking" by Nancy Sinatra because Dynaheir used to be Nancy Sinatra's old D'n'D player character.

CHARNAME isn't actually a Bhaalspawn, they were accidentally switched as a newborn with the temple's janitor's child. Alaundo's prophecy is just a fraud.

There is a squirrel with a powerful magic ring somewhere in the original Baldur's Gate.

Icewind Dale was named after Dale Ace Windy, a famous Canadian popstar from the 80s.

If you shoot a Magic Missile at Gorion in the very beginning of the original Baldur's Gate in Candlekeep, he will give you some very useful potions in return.

Adventure Y was originally supposed to be called Adventure Z but the devs reconsidered to avoid a potential legal suite from Bandai because of the similarity to Dragonball Z.

Kivan never had a wife, he just made the story up as part of his wrestling persona.

Sarevok was voiced by Jaleel White, who is most famous for his role as Steve Urkel in the 90s sitcom "Family Matters".

Nothing can stop the Smooze.

Edwin is actually a virgin, he is just overcompensating all the time.

When your familiar dies you may lose one constitution point, but if you keep it's corpse, Cromwell will forge a Katana +4, +2 bleeding damage/ round for 10 rounds from it.

There are actually no spambots on these forums, the mods just ban random people because the motherbrain tells them to do so.

If you wish to save Clara you need to choose the following dialogue options after meeting her: 2, 4, 1, 1, 3

There is a glitch that let's you one-hit Beholders, if you cast barkskin *and* stoneskin on yourself and then attack them with a Quarterstaff +1.

Gorion and Jaheira used to be a couple back in the day.

I need help overcoming my aversion to Lawful alignments.

Hello! In an upcoming PnP game I'm going to be playing a LN Doomguide of Kelemvor. My only issue is I normally hate being a lawful alignment due to feelings of being tied down and restricted. How do I get over this feeling?

Edit: Derp, not PnP. I mean Multiplayer BG game. >_>

The Tale of the Totemic Druid

Inspired by this tread and thanks to @bbear here I’m going to tell a story about Karasu no Yoru, a totemic druid raised in the Candlekeep and destined to become a major figure in the history of the Sword Coast.

The name of the character is in Japanese and means his name actually is Yoru (night) and he comes from the Karasu (crow) clan known for shamans and spirits.

Here's the character sheet at the start of the game.
image
The main incentive is to find out what it takes to successfully solo the whole game (from the start of BG:EE to the end of BG2:EE) with the totemic druid. There’s a discussion about which class is the hardest for a solo run in that thread and it seems many people vote for a druid. So I’ve decided to test it and will gladly write about it for those who are interested in the concept.

I’m playing on the Core difficulty and here’s my weiDU log:

I consider myself an experienced player, had different playthroughs in the past but have never tried the totemic druid. This kit seems interesting to me because it shows the true, from my point of view, nature of a druid – a summoner. In the past I played as an Avenger and liked it much but the Avenger feels more like a druid/mage, while a Shapeshifter obviously feels more like a fighter/druid. A vanilla druid is fine as well but I just like using a kit and not a vanilla version (if it’s not a dual- or multi-class). So, the totemic druid it is.

I understand the problems that can arise because of the SCS but I hope that my knowledge of the game will help to overcome these difficulties. I seriously think that with some meta-gaming even the power of SCS can be not so dangerous. I think than so bad (yeah) thing as the meta-gaming needs serious countermeasures such as not OP class, not min-maxed stats, smarter AI and so on.

As a rule, I try to role-play my character and his party as much as I can but this time it will be different. And I’m so excited – it’s a challenge, and a good one. I’ll try to play a no-reload run with an option for minimal reloads if the character will be killed but I will feel myself attached to it. Also, your reactions, ideas and just a general discussion is much appreciated ;)))

Help me with my evil

I'm looking to make an evil play through, actually 2 of them. But I'm kinda stuck when it comes to my party.

I'm kinda a paladin lover, so playing the opposite seems fitting. That leaves me with the following:

Blackguard PC
Xzar
Monty
Edwin
Viconia
Dorn or Kagain

In particular here, I'm torn between Dorn or Kagain, offense v defense. Now, I will be a 2h sword using blackguard (and prolly spears). That said I could also take both if I dual xzar to cleric. Kinda stuck on this party cause I'm not sure about evil thieves. Also wondering about bealoth in the party.

Of course my second party (arguably better for bg1 but suffers in bg2):
Assassin
Kagain
Dorn
Viccy
Edwin
Bealoth

My only issue with this character is that it overlaps with hexxat in bg2.

Anyway, just looking for a sounding board, really interested in the thought of a skelly/summon happy evil party for once

Adding too many things to BG:EE/BG2:EE.

So before i start writing this, I would like to mention that I'm probably a minority when it comes to thinking like this. What I'm about to write hasn't happened yet and it might not happen at all, it's just a slight worry I'm having about the future of BG:EE and BG2:EE.

When BG:EE came out I was skeptical about it and worried that it wouldn't be the same game, when i saw the NPCs i cried "Doom!" and wanted to dig my head into the ground, trying to ignore it. It took me over a year to make the change from TuTu/BGT to BG:EE. Yet to this day I'm not too fond of the new NPCs, it's not that i dislike, I just don't feel anything for them. I've actually played with all of them and I'll have to admit that i like Rasaad, he was the closest to the original in my opinion. What i did like a lot about BG:EE was the improved AI, GUI and all the small improvements and tweaks, it was still like the game i fell in love with so long ago, just a bit improved and made easier to install.

BG2:EE came out a bit later and i was really looking forward to it, not so much for the added content, more for the amazing AI/GUI improvement we had seen in BG:EE. Beamdog did not disappoint and i was finally able to play an improved version of two of my favorite games.

So at this point what had been added to the game was the following : Improved AI/GUI, new NPCs and a few new classes. Nothing of this stood out very much, and it was still the game i had fallen in love with so long ago, just improved. Life was good for me and then Beamdog dropped IWD:EE and i was in love again. They took IWD:EE and added the improvements from BG:EE along with throwing in a few new kits, I was SOLD! I gained a lot of faith in Beamdog with IWD:EE and in my opinion it has no flaws, it's better than the original in almost every possible way.

When we heard about adventure Y and then later on SoD i was really excited, went over to my brother to bang on his door, screaming "They are making a Baldur's Gate sequel! We finally get to experience how we ended up in that cage!". My brother wasn't nearly as excited as me, but that didn't matter, I could have entered a meeting for depressed people and cured them instantly (joke, no touchy feelings), I was radiating like that solar in ToB and nothing could bring me down.

After quite some time, a few pictures came out of SoD and I was a bit like "Whaat...?". While I was amazed at the improved graphics and the interesting and refined GUI, I couldn't help but to notice a lot of things (small and big) that were new, and they were many. We're actually getting a new class and not just a kit, HP bar above our names (which can be turned of, but still) and many other changes. Well i ended up shrugging my shoulders and thinking "Ah well, It's just SoD" but then there was a quote from somewhere that said something like "We'll tune up the early BG2:EE to make the level jump from SoD (12) feel less severe" and It struck me that this isn't just SoD anymore. We also got information that the Improvements from SoD will be patched later on into BG:EE and BG2:EE. Now recently there have been talking about introducing the SoD NPCs into BG2:EE if 'SoD sells well' (this is a rumor so far). I understand that SoD is a completely new game and they have to make changes for it to sell, but with the connection between the games you'll have the inevitable - changes made to SoD, will most likely end up in the other games too, so they aren't just making SoD a brand new game, they are changing BG:EE and BG2:EE even more.

So there I was, sitting down and pondering what does this mean for my beloved games. I was a bit frustrated and a lot of confused, it didn't help that people were making threads about getting the IWD:EE spells into BG2 to improve the druid and cleric, making even more changes.

Here comes the part where I am certain that I'm in the minority, I don't want all these new things. For me BG:EE, BG2:EE and IWD:EE is a wonderful remake of the game, but still at core the same game. I'm feeling now that there are plans of adding too many things to the game and it's getting to the point where I feel like someone should say "Stop!", more is not always better. This leads me to another question, when will it stop? Will beamdog keep adding more stuff to the game and update it, or will they accept that they have done the improvements needed and not have the game stray too far away from the original. It doesn't help my anxious mind that there are talks about a real expansion for BG2:EE. I'm not against this at all, I would love to get more content to BG2:EE, but I'm worried about what new changes there will be, and certain things they add that is wanted today in the gaming market (HP bar) might actually contaminate the original game. / From what I've heard the HP bar is a thing you can toggle on and off, which is great, but I'm certain there are many new features you can't do the same with, or the options menu will require a field manual.

I don't want this to come of as Doom 'n gloom, and it might not be like I'm thinking, once it gets released. But right now the way I'm looking at it, even if I don't buy SoD (which i will) my games (BG:EE, BG2:EE) will still be changed with the upcoming patch. It's gotten to the point now where I feel that Beamdog has done what they can with BG:EE and BG2:EE, and they should put all this energy into another game (that I'll most certainly buy). Worst case scenario i can see myself on purpose install and play one of the earlier versions of BG:EE/BG2:EE.

I would like to stress that this is the way I'm feeling, it's my opinion, you might not agree with it but that doesn't change the way I feel about it. Feel free to add things if you want, but do it in a civil tone please.

PS... MAKE ARCANUM PLEASE! :)

Question about Steam Purchases

Does Overhaul benefit the same amount from Steam purchases, or does Steam take a fat cut? I'm recommending some friends get Baldur's Gate but not sure if buying directly from Beamdog actually effects their profits. I know they give Steam keys if you've purchased it through Beamdog anyway but I'm just curious.

Thanks!

Xvart Raids - quest

I tried looking for this quest everywhere on the internet but I cannot find anything related to it. There's this farmer in AR4400 (http://www.gamebanshee.com/baldursgate/walkthrough/ar4400.php) by the name of Hulrik that gives you the quest "Xvart Raids" once you successfully protect his cow Arabelle from a raid of xvarts:

"It appears that xvarts have been making regular raids on the livestock around Nashkel. They must be operating from a base nearby, but where, exactly, I cannot be sure."

I then went to the Xvart Village and kill "Nexlit the Xvart" and his entourage as well as the bear and the bear in the cave but there is no closure to the quest.

Either way, I am more interested in the knowledge of this quest since I cannot find ~any~ reference to it online.

Quick questions about posting

Hello everybody!
I am new in the forums and I would like to make my forum posts have more style -like the ones I see actually- and be easier to read. I think and hope that this is the right category for this post :D.
As a result I have a couple of questions:

-How can I insert a member's name in my post? (for example like @Mirage ?) ups...I just learned that!! :D

-How can I insert whole or part of another member's comment in my post? This is indeed very useful for quick reference.

-How can I insert a "spoiler warning" section in my post?

I would like to start posting my no-reload runs, hence the questions!

ps. Ups, I have a last one for the experieced ones: How do you guys make these long [no-reload]-runs posts? Do you create a draft and make additions while you play the game?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Where do i find Rasaad in BG2:ee?

i haven't seen him yet and been through almost all of athkathla... i would like to recruit him as early as possible though and can't find anything about him on google and the likes so where can i find him? also did they add any new companions besides neera, dorn and rasaad?

Where would you want the Forgotten Realm game to be? (Also my argument for why Thay is Perfect)

$
0
0
As we well know Neera's, Edwin's stories all tie into Red Wizards of Thay him being one, and her escaping them. My argument for why Thay be perfect is two-fold, one it been set up just as well as Neverwinter was with all the references to the places in Icewind Dale and later Neverwinter. Two, we already know the Red Wizards are immensely powerful organization who machinations few know and could imagine. We could easily go down the route of Neera story being wild mage, perhaps they crack it and are able to utilize chaos or perhaps with problems on Sword Coast they start causing problems in Thay.

Another reason we have had most biomes, snowy tundras and temperate areas even more hotter climes, but not actual desert places and Thay would be massively intriguing since different Sword Coast and Athlakata we know Red Wizards are both political and powerful, who knows perhaps they even hire the hero or heroine, perhaps they could be the ones in danger from even greater power.

Now for details I found on this site:

http://www.realmshelps.net/faerun/thay/index.shtml

Best known for the crimson-robed Red Wizards who rule the land with an iron fist; Thay is a realm shrouded in mystery. Few outsiders have traveled extensively within its borders unless abducted and sold into a short life of slavery there: The Thayans who do talk about their homeland speak of it with such pride as to make most listeners doubt their amazing claims - were it not for the fact that these same rumors surface again and again from a dozen different sources.

The Thayans have endeavored constantly to expand their borders since they won their independence from Mulhorand in 922 DR. In fact, it was only twelve years after that momentous date that the Thayans launched their first invasion of Rashemen. The Thayans have been beaten back numerous times from both Aglarond and Rashemen, but though their armies failed to subjugate these realms, they still brought the Alaor, the Priador, the Sur and Umber vales, and the cities of the Wizards' Reach under Thay's control.

The borders of Thay have changed little since the conquest of the Wizards' Reach fifteen years ago. The Red Wizards keep their armies at home these days, while their merchants have spread throughout the lands of the Inner Sea, selling valuable magic items in well protected concessions and Thayan enclaves. Rivers of gold, goods, and slaves pour into the zulkirs' coffers from this expansion of Thayan trade. Szass Tam and his colleagues have come to understand that gold can conquer lands that resist swords and spells, and Thay's monopoly on the manufacture and sale of magic items might be the weapon that brings the Red Wizards dominion over all Faerûn.

Which BG1 minor NPC would you have liked to have returned in BG2 OR SIEGE OF DRAGONSPEAR??????????

I've been thinking about some BG1 NPCs who had interesting stories or fun cameos. I personally would have liked to see many again. I'm sure many share this sentiment, but I don't know which characters seemed most popular.

So now I want to see what characters stuck in the minds of most players. I'd like to see some people share what characters from BG1 they would have liked to see in SoA or ToB, and perhaps a word or two about how they would like the reunion to go down (ie place, situation, moment, etc.)

It could be anyone, from Eltan Sivlershield to Larry, Darryl and Darryl

I'll post one of mine below and eagerly await your opinions!

The many runs and trials of Dragonspear (Will be crossposted in Playthroughs)

$

I figured I'd announce it here, both to bounce ideas off other forumites and so I can keep things steady in one continuous topic, rather than having them all spread out.'

The premise is fairly simple, it was either the BG series again or the ME series again. Nothing else is interesting me at the moment. Thus, this topic (and my continued presence) are born.

Now first, I need help deciding the various classes that I will have pre-generated, as I will inevitably die. A few will be constants, because they're either classes I love (Cavalier) or really wanna play to the point that I have them in my head (Blade). Feel free to add more, as I'll likely go down the list and start back up again.

Current List:
1. Arveene Dragonspear
(LG Human Cavalier) 2h Sword, Spear, warhammer, bastard sword, longsword etc

This one is fairly straightforward, and a regular take on my main character throughout these games. Plus, with Dragonspear coming out, I want her namesake ready to go for its release.
2. Aundrea Dragonspear
(NG->NE Blade) Longsword and either Crossbow or Dagger

I love the concept of blades, and fighter/mages in general but I hate multiclassing. There will be a question regarding this character in the following post, but suffice to say, she's definitely starting good. By the time she reaches the trials in hell though, I see her going evil, just because she wants the sword blackrazor. Poor girl has a thing for pretty swords
3. Lia
My elven archer that I've sworn to beat the game with one day. One issue I've had with her is convincing myself why I'd give up my BGEE longbows for the shortbows in BG2EE. That's always been the one thing that's stopped me, having to relearn bows in a new game =(
4. Zippo
She fancies herself a wannabe war wizard from Cormyr. DEFINITELY an invoker
5. As yet unnamed cleric
Prolly of helm, although this might be one of the rare times I multiclass. If so, it'll be a dwarf.
6. As yet unnamed assassin
It'll likely be either an elf or a shorty, but never underestimate my love of stupidly playing humans.
Other than that, the only limitations I'll be putting on myself is no re-loading. So when ole-Minsc dies, it's so long until BG2 =( And as I said, if a character dies, it'll be moving on to the next on the list. As far as difficulty, I haven't decided if I'm going to go for the hardest, or just stay on core.

Xzar's Saved by the Spell

A user by the name of Myrmuzduur discovered a way to save Xzar from the Harper Assassin. I couldn't find this story anywhere else but here.

http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/258273-baldurs-gate-ii-shadows-of-amn/66939866?page=1

I did it!

Imprisonment was the answer. He has to be imprisoned a split second before the Harper spawns, just as he finishes casting the polymorph spell which causes her to spawn.

Here is the timing I managed to achieve. Edwina casts Imprisonment and just as the cage animation appears, I talk to Xzar:

And here is the dead Harper, minus Xzar who is imprisoned:

Here is Xzar, saved from ignominious instant-death, ALIVE AND STANDING ABOVE THE CORPSE OF HIS MURDERER, just like I said he would be:

That's all he'll say to me now as well. No more dialogue. Would have been nice if they'd snuck in something there but oh well.

Mission accomplished.

Mage dueled to Figher or Thief (Early)

Hi all

Just wondered if anyone had played Baldur's Gate with a mage that they then dueled to a figher or theif early on (like level 2). This would give you access to some first level spells and (i believe) the ability to use all mage only items while becoming a decent fighter. Anyone tried this? See any issues with it?
