Custom PC & NPC Portraits

Building on the original thread, started by @Syntia13, this is intended to be a hub to share alternate, fan-made portraits for the enhanced editions of the series. In order to keep the thread running and make it a comprehensive source for portraits, please abide by the site rules and a few guidelines:

Thread Rules

1: Respect artists' creations and their right to them. If portrait-makers ask that you not edit their work, don't. If a mistake is made, simply edit your post to remove the image, apologize, forgive and forget.
2: Do not share images for which you have not received permission from the artists, when possible.* This is particularly true of art from DeviantArt, which hosts many artists who do not want their work shared elsewhere.
3: If you request that a portrait be made, recognize that the artists in this forum do this simply because they enjoy contributing to the community. Be patient, be respectful and say thank you.
4: Be supportive! Many of the artists here are just beginning to learn how to make portraits. Be positive and constructive in your comments, and avoid pointless negativity.
5: If you are making and posting portraits, state who you used as a model (if applicable), either here or on your website. Understand that this still does not make the likeness your property, and be prepared to remove the image if so requested by the copyright holder.

*Understandably, the source of some older portraits is unknown. If in doubt, go to Google Images and drag the portrait to the search bar. You may find the artist or source through that method. Again refer to Rule 1.

Guide to Using Custom Portraits

Portraits in the enhanced editions use three images in bitmap (.bmp) format, the largest of which is only shown during the epilogue in Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal. The three sizes are 210x330, 169x266 (displayed in the character sheet) and 54x84 (displayed on the right UI bar).*

To use custom portraits for your PC:
1: Navigate to your Baldur's Gate directory in (My) Documents.
2: Drop the custom portraits into the Portraits folder.
3: In the game, select Custom when choosing a portrait and select the medium and small sizes. Alternately, if you have already begun your game, select Customize/Appearance from the character sheet.

To use custom portraits for NPCs:
1: Rename the portrait files to match the NPC whose portraits you want to replace. For example, Jaheira's portraits are named JaheiraL, JaheiraM and JaheiraS. There are some portraits in BG1 that do not conform to this, and those in BG2 have their own naming format. Consult this site.
2: Place the portraits in your override folder, located in the directory where you installed the game.

*Note that after the latest patch, the games allow a single large portrait size to be automatically adjusted to the proper sizes. I currently do not recommend this, as it causes pixelation in the small 54x84 version.

Drow portraits

Although I am very impressed by much of the art that I have seen on the forums, especially by artastrophe and the like, I am afraid that most drow art/portraits, even that found via google or on deviantart, just doesn't capture how I envision in my mind the dark elves of the forgotten realms.

Most dark elf art is either too cartoony, way too world of warcraft (total blegh!), or too sexualized. There is so much excellent art and portraits out there for high elves and other white elves, but when it comes to the evil drow of the realms, I am just underwhelmed.

As a side note, I have found more male drow art that appeals to my tastes than female drow art, which is sad because female drow are so much more awesomazerful.

See the following URLS for an idea of my tastes.

So I'm probably going to play a neutral evil cleric/mage (TnB mod for Elf Cleric/Pale Master and I'll use the Scales of Balance wizard kit changes if it's out by then) as my full run of BG, BG2, and ToB. It's the sort of evil of like, "I use the darkness for good!" so evil alignment for using dark cleric magicks but has like a 20 reputation. Now, the RP story I've been putting together all college semester is that in BG1 I'll adventure with Val'myr (Myself), Viconia, Dorn, Alora, Imoen, and probably Rasaad or Baeloth. Then in BG2 I want to go with Val, Viconia, Dorn, Rasaad, Mazzy, and Imoen (Yoshimo beforehand, I've never used Yoshimo).

Now, In BG1 I'm going to RP a romance with Alora which will be the basis for the BG2 Alora mod I'm going to make after my run of all three games. I'll RP that she dies at the start of BG2 along with Dynaheir and Khalid. In BG1 I'm going to save Dynaheir with Minsc and use Jaheira/Khalid until after Nashkel.

Anyway, once Alora dies and Val is utterly heartbroken I'm debating if I want to replace one of my party members with Aerie because she's super cute and might be the one that keeps Val out of depression. I just don't know who to replace for Aerie >_>

I might also just RP a romance with Mazzy. Then I'd have to write a mod for that later.

Either way I plan on this occurring.

Val starts as Chaotic Neutral at the start of BG1. At the beginning of BG2 Val goes Neutral Evil because of his contempt of the world and Alora's death. Then Mazzy/Aerie/Whomever convinces Val'myr's alignment to go True Neutral.

So, I'm wondering, can an evil character romance a good character and see their virtues as attractive despite themselves being evil and such? Also, do you guys think it would be alright to RP alignment shifts and use EE-Keeper to change them?

What are some restrictions I can have that make the game challenging for a new player

I'm fairly familiar the ruleset and have played a fair bit. I'm playing with the mod called Battle Enhancer. It only works with BG1 to my knowledge.

I've never actually completed the game but I don't want it to be "easy". In terms of "stack wands, potions, scrolls, kill things.

So far my plan is taking Imoen, Minsc and whoever else. Main character is a wild mage/cleric (edited save).
All I came up with so far is: don't save and reload during fights (I'm keeping reloading to a minimum. If five out of six die and I have to travel to resurrect them, that's fine but a party wipe means a reload). I'm going with that only arcane magic based characters can use wands. Scrolls can only be used by mages.
I'm trying to come up with a realistic limit on scrolls/potions/wands, etc. But I have never played far enough to have a basic idea on what I need.

Other than only resting at inns or where it seems safe (ie explored most of the area) and setting a limit on how much gold I can have at once and keeping it on core difficulty, I'm not sure how else I can make it more challenging.

One thing I'm curious of, how does enemy respawning work? Do enemies respawn if I leave the area and renter it? For example going from the first area with Imoen after Gorion dies, to the Inn and then travelling back to that area, will enemies respawn if I haven't rested or do I need to rest to have enemies respawn?

Oh and a note for mods: I didn't put this in the challenge section since I felt it was better here to get a better general idea of how to make the game harder without doing a specific challenge.

what would be the bare minimum for a laptop to run the enhanced editions?

My wife will be moving in with me soon and i would like to get a cheapish laptop to play the enhanced editions. as my pc is connected to the tv, it isn't fair to completely take that over but i can sit next to her with a laptop. problem is i have no idea if integrated graphics will run the games in a playable fashion. i don't want to break the bank as it will just be a small laptop for basic gaming.
has anyone here had any experience with the enhanced editions on a laptop with integrated graphics? what would the community recommend in terms of hardware? the sites i have looked at have all pointed me towards dedicated graphics but i was playing bg2 when it came out on a computer less powerful than my phone so i think they aren't quite with it.

would this be alright?

Setting Controlled Scripts on Android/iPad

$

I don't normally go in for using the AI scripts other than the general attack scripts, but I've noticed that the Cleric Controlled and Thief Controlled scripts are really useful for undead turnin' and trap detectin'. Of course, they're easy to use on a desktop (you just hit the key to issue the desired command) but that's something difficult to do on Android/iPad.

Is there a way to trigger these scripts on these form factors? Specifically, how to get the "v" and "d" inputs?

Baldur's Gate & Icewind Dale Jeopardy! (May contain spoilers!)

Dear Ladies and Gentlehamsters,

welcome to the Reverse Question Thread, or
"Baldur's Gate Jeopardy" if you like.

In this thread I want users to provide answers.
But without any questions asked beforehand.

Instead it works the other way around.
You present answers and the others must find
appropriate questions that fit your given answer.

Example: Answer: "Boo"
Possible Questions: "Who's the cutest miniature space giant hamster?"
"What's the name of Minsc's animal companion?"
"What is Oob spelled backwards?"

Please post only one new answer at a time.
However you may post several questions to all answers given so far in this thread.
Answers and questions have to be Baldur's Gate related.

I'll start first:
Answer: "Plug tails"

Now it's your turn to think of questions that fit that answer or to provide
a new answer.

Have fun!

for clarification: You can provide questions to old, given answers as many as you like.
The rule above just says that you must not provide more than one new answer at a time.

for example: You do not always have to provide a question to the latest answer.
Just provide questions to any previous answers you like.

Announcement: With the upcoming Icewind Dale:EE I hereby extend this thread to the Icewind Dale games.

"Advertise" Your Written Play-through(s)!

So as I'm sure we all know, there are a lot of really cool written play-throughs of the BG saga on these forums. Some of them are very challenge based, while others are more for the role-play. There are several prominent writers of these as well as a few who have just started and only have one or two of their play-throughs up. Sometimes one of the more well known writers will make a new play-through, (example: @Blackraven‌) but someone who reads all of their work will miss it and only find it a week or two later. (example: me) The idea behind this thread is that writers of these "play-throughs" can "advertise" their play-throughs, thus making for easy access for others, as well as a visible and concise back catalogue for new members of the forums. I'm not going to include my own writings in the main post, but I'll place them in the comments, same as you all. The "format" for these would be...

[Title of the thread/character's name/what kind of challenge it is/however else you'd want to title it] [release status i.e complete/BG1 complete/on break/on hiatus/ongoing/etc.]

[Link to first page of the thread]

[short description of the thread]

Any extra details or notes you might want to add beyond the description is up to you, though I don't know what you'd put in that section.

Now, I'm not sure whether to leave this in General Discussion or Challenges and Playthroughs. I think I'll leave it in General Discussion for at least a week, just so it can garner attention. Once that's done I'll toss it into C&P, since it definitely belongs in there.

With all that done, I'm going to tag a few people who I know have written play-throughs on the forums, since they'll hopefully be interested. @Lemernis@Heindrich@lolien@bengoshi@meagloth@MacHurto@BelgarathMTH@SionIV@Aurorus@Gotural@SharGuidesMyHand‌ and Blackraven (previously tagged)

Wow, summoning exploit still has not been fixed. A question to the developers.

You can summon a whole army using simulacrum and project image. It's always been the biggest exploit in BG2 because you can bypass the summoning cap of 1 for celestial and 5 total for the party.

I remember summoning 20 planetars and dog-piling on Demogorgon back in the day. I left the monitor unpaused and the poor demon prince was still swimming in waves of red planetars when I came back from the kitchen.

I expected this to be closed by BG2EE, since it's a well known exploit with improved invisibility + spell immunity cheese. Unfortunately it's still there. I think II+SI cheese is still there, too. (this allows a mage to finish the game without ever getting attacked. SI against abjuration/divination prevents dispel and true seeing while improved invisibility blocks breach attempt; as long as you cast defensive spells your mage is invincible and won't take 1hp loss throughout the entire game because the enemies have no means of removing your defensive spells.)

Since BG2EE won't be getting updates soon, I would like to hear from developers the intended behavior so that I could restrict myself adhering to that behavior and I don't think you wanted players to summon 30 army that can hack most enemy bosses in few seconds.

Is the summoning cap to be any larger if you use clones, or is it still intended to be 5 no matter what? If the former, what's the intended limit on summoning cap if you use clones? For now I'm going to stick to the party limitation of 5 because clones shouldn't up the cap if your companions can't increase the cap.

I was researching Cragmyr Keep (a day's ride south of Beregost) Source: "Elminster's Notebook: Lord Kuldak Maurancz" in Dragon #200) http://annarchive.com/files/Drmg200.pdf [Page 144 or 146]

Well I spotted a sword of sharpness within the Keep's Dungeons and for all who don't know this: a sword of sharpness is like a minor Vorpal sword that can sever limbs but not heads on a critical hit.

So what happens and how is it handled In-Engine if I chop your arm off in Baldur's Gate?
Hey @elminster You wrote the notebook so could you weigh in on this? (" ͡° ' ͜ʖ ͡° ')

What do you think would be a fair price for "Adventure Y"?

$

Note: this poll is only about the most expensive version of Adventure Y i.e. the PC version. Android and iOS versions are generally cheaper.

What is known? Naught but their names. The mage is Jon Irenicus. The girl is Imoen

Adventure Y is a DLC currently developed by Beamdog. It will be about the time between BG1 and BG2 events and will cover the circumstances "much darker than anyone would have thought" under which CHARNAME who had defeated Sarevok and thus had saved the Sword Coast had to escape to Amn and was kidnapped by Irenicus.

It will be released not earlier than spring of 2015.

Adventure Y will have at least one new NPC whose name starts with "Gl". Also, there can be more: "There are a few characters in Adventure Y I'm just in love with. One in particular I plan to use as my next PC if I ever find time to get involved in a p&p game again" (Andrew Foley). Maybe in the future this or these NPC (s) will appear in BG2EE.

The UI in Adventure Y will be previoosly unseen one, but will include all the enhancements Beamdog made to BGEE and IWDEE.

There will be both absolutely new locations and remastered and repainted areas from BG1 in Adventure Y.

Adventure Y (English version) will be voiced-over. We will hear the magnificent Dave Warner's voice (Irenicus) again. Maybe Jennifer Hale will be also involved. Trent Oster mentioned that the price they had to pay for VO was very high.

There will be new abilities for characters (at least one that looks like a transformation into a goblin) and/or a goblin companion.

There will possibly be new kits and spells. And items, of course.

Now, when we know all this, what do you think would be a fair price for such expansion or game (whether it's an expansion or a standalone game, remains to be seen):

An analysis on Necromancy (Focus on IWD:EE but may apply to other games).

$
0
0
So, today I've decided I'm going to try and act like I know what I'm talking about and do an analysis on Necromancy spells within the infinity engine games. I'll go through each class that has a necromantic flavor and then compare wizard and cleric spells and abilities. Also, this primarily focuses on IWD:EE but information can be relevant to BG:EE and BG2:EE especially if you import IWD:EE's spells to them.

Classes:

Classes suitable to perform necromancy in my opinion are Wizards and Clerics as the top contenders followed by Blackguards, Bards, and Sorcerers. Monks can also have a necromantic flavor with the Dark Moon Monk and modded kits.

Human Wizards have access to the Necromancer specialist. They gain saves vs necro spells, one extra spell a day, and an increase in chance to scribe necromancy spells by 15%. They lose access to Illusion and Enchantment spell schools and have a -15% chance to scribe spells from non-necromancy spell schools. The Wizard seems to focus more on the "Black Magicks" side of things. Will go into more detail later. They can learn animate dead as a 5th level spell at level 9.

The Cleric is a divine spellcaster and is more suited for the "Master of Life and Death" type of necromancer. If you're good or neutral aligned you turn undead which first fears them but at later levels can outright destroy them. If you're evil you may rebuke undead. This will still fear them but instead of destroying them you dominate them under your control. Unlike the wizard, you lose out on many spells depending on your alignment. Good Clerics gain many life spells such as the powerful Resurrection while evil Clerics gain necrotic spells like Destruction and Wither. Neutral Clerics gain some of both. Will go into more detail later. Clerics learn animate dead the earliest as a 3rd level spell at level 5.

Blackguards make fine unholy warriors but certainly lack in the spells department. You won't be casting animate dead until level 13. Despite this, the Aura of Despair, Poison Weapon, and undead immunities make the Blackguard a great character if you want that black magic feel while being a primary melee character. Like the Cleric, they also gain the ability to rebuke weaker undead.

Bards learn the wizard necromancy spells but at a slower rate as they only start beginning learning the arcane from level 2 onwards and can only learn up to 8th level spells. They only gain one 8th level spell at level 29(!) which makes them not-so-great for a legit primary necromancer. There are mods you can use such as Song and Silence which adds a Dirgesinger Bard which has great necromantic flavor which a debuffing bard song and a SLA to animate dead at level 10. Unfortunately the Song and Silence kits only seem to currently be working in BG:EE and BG2:EE. IWD:EE the kits do not work to my knowledge. So, as a Bard, like the Blackguard, you will gain the ability to learn animate dead at 13. Keep in mind Bards level very quickly with their rogue level-progression.

Next are Sorcerers. It may be argued they can be equally good necromancers (well, they can actually); however, they do not have a great necromantic flavor as the Wizard has the Necromancer specialization and the Cleric has dominion over the dead as a modal ability. If you already have a scroll-learning character in IWD:EE it may be nice to have a sorcerer so they can innately learn all the necromancy spells. It may also be useful if you don't know where to find certain necromancy spell scrolls within the game. They learn animate dead as a 5th level spell at level 10.

Forgot about Monks on my initial writing of this. So Dark Moon Monks combine dark magicks and martial arts. They can use frozen fist which is similar to chill touch. As they level they may also cast Blindness, Blur, Vampiric Touch, and Mirror image.

Multi-Classing and Dual-Classing:

Unfortunately this is where my knowledge falls short. I do not know much about Dual classed characters and how I would create a necromancer. However, I do have some knowledge on multiclassing.

If you're seeking to multi-class I would say the best way to go about being a "True Necromancer" is to be a Half-Elf Cleric/Mage. This way, you gain all the arcane and divine spells along with turn/rebuke undead. If you want to focus on life spells, go good. If you want destructive spells, go evil. Then, if you want to generalize, go neutral.

The spells you will be using as a Necromancer:

Here is a list of all the necromancy spells used by both divine and arcane means. The arcane list was provided by @Merina in her thread, here: http://forums.beamdog.com/discussion/41493/wizard-spell-lists-icewind-dale-enhanced-edition#latest

In the divine list I note any alignment restrictions as well as any comparisons to the arcane list.

Mods of Note:

Tome and Blood adds Elves to be able to become Necromancers along with the Revenant Bloodline for scorcerers and two sub-kits for necromancers. The Pale Master is much like it's 3.5 counterpart and gives you undead immunities as you level as well as a d6 hitdice. The Pale Master is Neutral and Evil only. For Good and Neutral you can be the White Necromancer of which I can assume is based on Pathfinder's class by the same name. It gives you raise dead as well as a number of healing spells to your spell list.

http://www.gibberlings3.net/sns/

Song and Silence adds the Dirgesinger bard so if you want to use that in BG:EE or BG2:EE you're perfectly available to. Also, if you use this version's shadowdancer they have summon shadow which is also an undead type creature.

http://gibberlings3.net/forums/index.php?app=downloads&showfile=706

Divine Remix adds the Strifeleader of Cyric Cleric kit. If you want that death god flavor for your Cleric Cyric is a pretty good way to go.

http://www.gibberlings3.net/iwdification/

IWDification adds many of the spells from IWD to BG:EE and such.

http://forums.beamdog.com/discussion/33657/scales-of-balance-post-hac-kits-and-tweaks/p1

Keep and eye out on this mod. It's soon™ going to also overhaul the wizard kits and so necromancers will auto-learn necromancy spells! Also has cool cantrips for each mage specialization among either neat stuff!

Both of these mods also contain a monk of the Order of the Long Death which make other good death-themed martial artists.
@elminster thanks for the link n_n

Ending notes and biases:

Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

I personally cannot decide which type of char I like more between pure Cleric, pure Wizard, or Cleric/Mage. Wizard definitely has the better offensive spell collection as a lot of the Cleric's spells are healing or protection spells. However, Clerics gain animate dead at a much earlier level, 5 compared to 9. This with the ability to rebuke undead as en evil cleric makes it a tough choice to make. On the wizard side you gain badass spells like Soul Eater that kills enemies and turns them into skellybros which is super special awesome! Also, EE keeper is fun. Sometimes with the TnB mod I'll make a Cleric/Pale Master and such.

If I got any information wrong or have any input I'd super be appreciative of any comments and such n_n
