Black Pits - tips on fighting Fire Giant + Elementals?

$

Hi. I am going through The Black Pits as a newbie to Baldur's Gate. I have a full party consisting of Fighter, Dwarven Defender, Barbarian, Ranger, Illusionist and Priest. They are all level 10 with a decent array of blessed weapons and armour, and some magical clothes and accessories.

I am up to the penultimate battle against a Fire Giant + 4 Fire Elementals, and I can't see any way I can win. Every time I fight the battle my guys get killed very quickly and don't come close to killing the giant, let alone the elementals. Every character has drunk a potion of Fire Resistance before the fight, and my illusionists casts Cone of Cold.

I'm not sure what else I can do - are there any special tactics, spells or items I should use here?

Rangers and Deities

Are Rangers of the Forgotten Realms supposed to follow a deity? If so, is there such a thing as a ranger who somehow doesn't worship any gods? Where would they draw their divine powers from?

Shouldn't a deity have qualms about imbuing a ranger Charname with powers knowing that he's a Bhaalspawn?

Last, is it mentioned in the games if Minsc, Kivan or Valygar follow any deities?

Moar Necromancy questions! Party?

So, in line with almost all of my threads being about Necromancy, what sort of party do you guys think in BG1 and BGII would fit with a necromancer charname?

I suppose I'll divide this into two parts.

One party for a Cleric Necromancer that goes for TN and is a Master of Life and Death (Healing and Harming, balance sort of thing)

and another for a NE/LE Wizard Necromancer who's obsessed with Necromancy and improving his research.

I imagine Dorn and Viconia would be two people for such characters as a Blackguard makes a good bodyguard for a Necromancer and Viconia is practically one herself.

Edit: Also, I can never bring myself to leave Imoen behind and I always recruit Alora because she's my favorite NPC.

I'd rather take people more fitting of a black magick party but how do I deny Imoen and the cutest little thief girl to ever exist ever QQ

Pausing and red text?

What has happened to my game? Every time i pause i see in this bold red text : the date, year and how long time I've been playing? I'm 110% positive i didn't have this before as i can't play with this on. I pause a lot in this game and it's REALLY annoying to see this bold red text every time i pause and unpause.

Please tell me it's possible to remove this?

The great Shadows of Amn conspiracy!

I bet someone else thought about it... I always have seen some clues on something "bigger" going on in Shadows of Amn, so I gathered some clues here and there :

1) Kalah, the tiny little gnome illusionist, mentions in his final breath that he was promised something. He achieved great power in that tent, even though Aerie said his skills weren't ever that powerful. It is possible that he wanted that in his own ambition, as stated that Gnomes are pretty much just made fun of in Athkatla, or hunted down as criminals. But what if his motives weren't his own, but rather he was controlled?

2) In the de'Arnise hold, Glacias, Lord Arnise's personal bodyguard as well as friend states that his new masters shown him the truth through magic. Incidentally, TorGal didn't have ANY magic, but he *did* have some beasts that made holes through the underground - the Umber Hulks!

3) In the dungeon at Windspear hills, we meet Tazok... *again*, even after having him decapitated, splattered in tiny pieces of minced meat... well, you get my meaning. Interestingly enough, he has new masters and new plans this time around and carries a key with him, key that opens a secret door to the sewers in Athkatla!

I am pretty much sure there are other clues scattered around, but I forgot them by today. Yet one thing is certain - all clues lead to the Illithids indirectly. Are those dudes trying to conquer the world or are they simply testing the protagonist? Cut content? Pretty damn sure it was.

What do you guys think?

Does Your Forum Name mean anything?

I am curious about names it would appear, very curious... Deadly Curious! (Actually I am curious about many things and it tends to get me in all kinds of trouble, but that is a story for a different time). So if your forum name has some kind of meaning or a story to go with it I would be interested to hear it. It might be possible to arrange some cookies for your time by the Ferret-Master @Nimran of the Thieves Guild if you do. Although he is a fickle and unpredictable sort.. so they say.

What protects from Stun? [e.g. Celestial Fury stuns you through Free Action]

Okay: so, I just quit my Guarded Compound fight mid-fight, when I realized that Koshi (wielding Celestial Fury :: which has Stun-or-save on every hit) managed to, in fact, stun me, even though I am protected by Free Action (the cleric spell).

Is this a bug? (Using SCS v28)

What protects you from a Stun?

How about the Free Action Ring (don't have one yet) or Arbane (sword) or FoA +5 (much much later) or Greenstone Amulet (don't have that either)?

Or maybe Spell Immunity:Whatever-school-Stun-is?

Chaotic Commands maybe?

One more try: the SCS solo no-reload tale of Glorydd, Dwarven Fighter/Thief

For good fortune I'm doing this again in a separate thread rather than in "We're all doomed". (It worked pretty well for Norgath after all).
I'm kind of close to wanting to take a break, but I still had Glorydd, a female Dwarven Fighter/Thief. When I loaded her game, I found the enthusiasm again to give it a shot with her. I like her portrait, quite baldurish and a bit enigmatic (hence her True Neutrality), and she has Annah's (PS:T) Scottish voiceset, very enjoyable.

I think that Fighter/Thief is a class that I'm relatively comfortable with (maybe even good at, though the cautiousness that straight Thieves require me to exercise may even suit me better). It's also a combination of the two classes I've performed best with so far, so here's hoping for a first no-reload Trilogy success :D
image
Glorydd ('Silver Queen' in AD&D Dwarvish) is currently a level 3/3 Fighter/Thief thanks to having been a good lass with the common folk of the FAI, Beregost (including Melicamp, who had wandered quite far off), and Nashkel; and thanks also to having made the areas surrounding those places a bit safer.

Hopefully I can report some nice progress soon...

Restoring Game Under Steam

Steam has a nice feature in which it checks the integrity of game files and redownloads/reinstalls as necessary. What needs to be deleted in order to reset an install in preparation for a new set of mod installations?
What I know so far:
1. Empty the override folder.
2. Delete the weidu.log

Anything else?

Custom Portrait Help

Once again, I call upon the Baldur's Gate Forum community for help with the portrait of my CN Dragon Disciple Zaram. The last portrait I was given was most likely given to me without the permission of the artist, and as such I am removing it from my Youtube Series and putting disclaimers on the videos that I have already posted. I feel terrible for even accidentally using someone's elses work without consent, and I want the source artist (if there is one) referenced in the desc of the photo so that I may ask permission to use such a photo
Again the things you need to know are
1. Zaram is vibrant, and usually likes to think positive (usually) so don't give him any dull colors if you decide to change the colors he wears.
2. Despite the Fact that Zaram is trigger happy with his breath weapon ability, I'd prefer him not to be breathing fire in his portrait.
3. Zaram is fairly arrogant, so a smirk would be really nice :)
4. Zaram is pretty greedy too, but Gold in the mix. Anyway you like, surprise me.
5. Zaram's Familiar (A Cat) on his shoulder is Mandatory. Because that's just cute :P

Do you max your HP/level rolls?

So in my current game I am using core difficulty on SCS, and I notice that - especially on the lower levels - it's really annoying to have characters with low hp. A lucky kobold or a single spell can kill my characters in one time! So I thought about simply using the max hp/level difficulty slider workaround, but then i kind of feel like cheating... so I wonder, how do you guys play it?

Myself, I've used the following rule: I have to accept any result that it at least half of the max possible. So if I level up a thief which, could get a max of +6 hp/level, I am allowed to reload if he only gets 1, 2 or 3 hp on level up. But a 4, 5, or 6 will stay.

How do you do it?

Solo Melissan FMT - Need Advice!

I haven't had any trouble with any of the encounters but can't for the life of me kill Melissan at the very end of the game solo.

Here is the stats of my (pretty much wet dream best in slot) character:

Elven Dual Wield FMT (Capped) 18/17/22

++ Scimitar
++ Warhammer
++ Long Sword
+ Two Handed Sword
+++ Two Weapon Style

22 Str (25 Crom Faeyr)
20 Dex
19 Con
20 Int
11 Wis
11 Cha

Main Gear Set:
Crom Faeyr
Scarlet Ninja-To
Robe of Vecna
Amulet of Power
Gauntlets of Extraordinary Specialization
Helm of Balduran
Ring of Gaxx
Ring of Protection +3
Montolio's Cloak
Boots of Speed
Golden Girdle

146 HP
-6 AC
-12 MH THAC0
-10 OH THAC0
5 Base APR, 10 with imp haste

I have a ton of offweapons and items such as the beholder shield, simulacrum helmet, carsomyr +6 for sexy whirlwinds, etc.

Most of my HLA's are Time Stop traps, Greater Whirlwinds, and of course UAI so I can use Scarlet Ninja To, Carsomyr, Montolio's Cloak.

I can't seem to beat Melissan. My basic strat is traps (time) + simulacrum + haste + mirror image + stoneskin etc and that has lasted me all game but now I am stuck. I die way too quickly and can't get to the third guardians. Die in between the 2nd and third guardians.

What strategies can I use?

Thanks!!

What do you think would be a fair price for "Adventure Y"?

Note: this poll is only about the most expensive version of Adventure Y i.e. the PC version. Android and iOS versions are generally cheaper.

What is known? Naught but their names. The mage is Jon Irenicus. The girl is Imoen

Adventure Y is a DLC currently developed by Beamdog. It will be about the time between BG1 and BG2 events and will cover the circumstances "much darker than anyone would have thought" under which CHARNAME who had defeated Sarevok and thus had saved the Sword Coast had to escape to Amn and was kidnapped by Irenicus.

It will be released not earlier than spring of 2015.

Adventure Y will have at least one new NPC whose name starts with "Gl". Also, there can be more: "There are a few characters in Adventure Y I'm just in love with. One in particular I plan to use as my next PC if I ever find time to get involved in a p&p game again" (Andrew Foley). Maybe in the future this or these NPC (s) will appear in BG2EE.

The UI in Adventure Y will be previoosly unseen one, but will include all the enhancements Beamdog made to BGEE and IWDEE.

There will be both absolutely new locations and remastered and repainted areas from BG1 in Adventure Y.

Adventure Y (English version) will be voiced-over. We will hear the magnificent Dave Warner's voice (Irenicus) again. Maybe Jennifer Hale will be also involved. Trent Oster mentioned that the price they had to pay for VO was very high.

There will be new abilities for characters (at least one that looks like a transformation into a goblin) and/or a goblin companion.

There will possibly be new kits and spells. And items, of course.

Now, when we know all this, what do you think would be a fair price for such expansion or game (whether it's an expansion or a standalone game, remains to be seen):

powergaming party (BG2 TOB,NPC and multiplayer)

What is the most powergaming party that you can think of?

two different groups of posts
1) multiplayer created party by player. What classes/races (and items)
2) charname + npc's. What npc's
-this is not 1 vs 2 but creating 2 different threads for 1 purpose is silly
-bg2 tob exp limit
-no mods

and why is this the most powergaming?

for example
F/M/T half-elf - like kensai mage but +100dmg with backstab
Kensai13/Mage - i think everyone know why kensai/mage
cleric/specjalist mage - healer who is almost immortal
mage slayer13/mage - antimage
edwin - most spells

npc's
F/M/T op op
sarevok dualed to mage op
edwin - op op op
aerie - op multi
keldorn - op dispell
Cernd - SS f yeah

like you can see I prefer magic :)

A Wizard Slayer Bhaalspawn (Who Likes Wizards) in IWD

$

I know that BG and IWD are supposed to be completely separate adventures, but in my own head-canon, Gorion's ward is the only person/demigod capable of leading adventurers against Belhifet and his posse. As a matter of fact, he's also the only person, in my mind, who can defeat Baeloth in the Black Pits . . . But maybe I'm just biased. Either way, here is my rationalization behind an almost impossible tale:

First, it should be noted that the character in this little tale is a Wizard Slayer, though this class was born of circumstance rather than some deep-seated hatred for magic users. After all, the Bhaalspawn grew up in Candlekeep surrounded by and tutored by mages. Mages also trained him in the art of combat, and through this training he learned techniques that were especially effective against magicians. This training also allowed a natural magic resistance to build up within him, which was a hinder emcee only in the sense that it stopped him from taking advantage of most magical items.

Shortly before fleeing from Candlekeep with his foster father, the Bhaalspawn met a group of five traveling adventurers in the tavern and, over a pint or two, listened to their stories of epic battles against dragons, ghouls, and other horrors. It was then that the group of six slightly intoxicated companions were spirited away to Baeloth's domain. Gorion's ward's Bhaalspawn heritage allowed him to survive, and even thrive within the arena, and eventually slay the Drow himself. Of course, the ward had no idea whatsoever that his godly lineage was what drove him to greatness as a gladiator. After the final bloody duel against Baeloth, the Bhaalspawn awoke to find himself in the Candlekeep inn, outfitted in enchanted armor and holding high quality long swords. Feeling woozy with no memories of what had transpired, our hero decided that he was simply hungover and that the armor and weapons were gifts from the kindly adventurers with whom he had been speaking the night before.

Fast forward to Larswood, circa one week after Gorion's demise: Upon meeting Baeloth once more, the Bhaalspawn regained some memory flashes. Not many, mind you, but just enough to realize that this particular Drow was dangerous and not to be trusted. Nevertheless, he was accepted into the party so that Charname could keep an eye on him. After all, having a powerful spell caster on your side is never a bad thing, especially when the alternative involves having said spell caster roaming the countryside, potentially plotting to kidnap some other heroes. As for Baeloth's reasons for keeping quiet about his prior relationship with our hero and joining his party? Quite simply, he wanted revenge. If his former captive could not remember him he could get close enough to crush him at the most opportune moment. More so, however, he wanted a chance to reclaim some glory and fame that was lost after his exile. What better way to do so than to take down Sarevok? Revenge would come later . . .

After Sarevok's death, Baeloth and the Bhaalspawn hero part on good terms, having come to rely upon one another during their travels. So much for that revenge!

Next, the Wizard Slayer heard of an evil presence to the North, in the Spine of the World. Not wanting to place his friends in danger, he traveled alone, leaving in the dead of night. Suppressing his Bhaalspawn nature as much as possible so as to avoid detection by the great evil he came to destroy. After recruiting a party of brave adventurers and smiting evil everywhere in the frozen north, the Bhaalspawn returned to Baldur's Gate where he met up with some companions and set off for Amn. Sigh . . . A hero's work is never done.

Anyway, this is my story and I'm sticking to it. Adventure Y may force me to have Charname leave for the Dale after ToB, but either way, he ends up in all of my adventures! Other than start dates (They're never accurate for my games anyway with how much I rest) is there any reason this tale could not be true? I spent a lot of time rationalizing my hero being in all three Enhanced Editions :)
