I'm fine with the first hit being a Critical Hit and stunning him for two rounds, but I was shocked I could STUN him!
Now... I can confirm that the Stupifier is by far the most useful weapon in BG1, where (ALMOST!!) everything can be hit with a +1.
And I wasn't cheesing here, just because the Demon Knight is the 'little brother' of Aec'Letec...
And there I buffed to become immune to everything... L I T E R A L L Y ! !

Can Scroll of Magic Protection be Dispelled?

$

As title suggests. I'm following the current discussion raised by Josh Sawyer on the Obsidian forums regarding sucker punches performed by GM's - so was wondering if the latest version of BG:EE or BG2:EE allows for any dispelling of the scroll on the player, or if the player still can use it on enemies (such as a lich) or boss.

Rethinking Storyline [first-run] because of Dualing Imoen at Level 4 instead of Level 5

That is a big change for my good party. Now I am thinking of getting to Coran as early as possible so I can get his Trap-finding to 100% eventually for Durlag's Tower.

My Chap 7 party should be Charname F/M; Minsc, Coran, Yeslick, Branwen, Imoen [dualled]. NPCs recruited and retired along the way will have been Jaheira, Khalid, Kivan, Dynaheir and Ajantis.

I am still torn up by the choice between Minsc and Ajantis. Perhaps if I roleplay him as an elderly Sean Connery type who gets worn out along the way or perhaps falls in love with Joseph's wife and decides to become a Lay Deacon at the Temple of Helm. That could happen... Yeahhh!

OK then. Looks like I will not have quite the same OP party for Chap. 2-3. So now I have to balance getting enough Gold to buy top quality stuff before Nashkel Mines vs. not wasting XP by having Imoen hit Level 4 too soon... hmmmm.

Lots to think about. Fun!!!

Changing Character Portraits (not the protagonist)

I've been learning how to change my character portrait in BGEE II. I'm having so much fun scouring the internet and archives here looking for cool custom portraits.

I've been wondering...can you change a character portrait for others on your team? For example, can I change Jaheria's portrait after she joins my party? I'd really like to do this and if anyone knows how, please share your wisdom. Thanks in advance.

Elven Swashbuckler/Mage No-Reload SCS playthrough

$

Yesterday I decided to recreate a character I've been relatively succesful with once in the past, an elven Thief/Mage kitted as a Swashbuckler. I did this because my no-reload performances with my last five characters have been less than stellar to say the least:
- Bounty Hunter (killed by Jenkal in Gullykin)
- Cleric/Thief 1 (charmed in Cloakwood Mines)
- Wizard Slayer (killed by "pnp Battle Horrors" in Davaeorn fight)
- Cleric/Thief 2 (stunned and killed by Rayic Gethras in Athkatla)
- Transmuter who could only cast Alteration spells (kissed to death by Shoal on the Sword Coast - she was a female charname and I thought that Shoal only kissed males; I might continue her run if I learn to bear with minimal-reload).

In other words, only one out of five made it into BG2, and even that one didn't last very long there. I still have a run with Aya the Avenger, which has evolved into a roleplay adventure. I shall continue posting about her progress here.

The purpose of the present run with the Swashmage is to get her into Amn as fast as possible, because it's been a while since I last played SoA & ToB (except for a few quests with the Cleric/Thief). So unlike previous runs I've journalled on the forums, this one will be a more technical run in which I'll be more generous in using my metaknowledge of BG1. I'll be solo'ing most if not all of BG1, for quick experience gain even though I shall adhere to the XP cap. I'm still debating whether or not to pick up Coran along for romance purposes. If charname makes it into SoA, gameplay will likely change because my knowledge of SoA/ToB is (even) less comprehensive than that of BG1. I'll probbaly end up using various NPCs in SoA & ToB.

So here is Gylliane:

image
My mouth fell open after about about 20 minutes of rolling for good stats...
image
For pure powergaming purposes I should have invested more in WIS, for Wish and lore, but I always want my Swashies to be highly charismatic and I wasn't willing to compromise on physical stats or INT, so this is how I redistributed her rolls:
image
She starts out with two pips in Scimitars. At levels 4 and 8 she'll invest proficiency points in Two Weapon Fighting so that dualwielding becomes viable by mid/late game. In the beginning she will be using her shortbow quite a lot, despite her Thac0 penalty for non-proficiency (which is partly offset by high DEX). The thing is that the Swashbuckler doesn't get many proficiency points to spend, compared to other 'fighter' types. And for a multiclass Swashmage, progression is even slower in this respect.

Backstory/Personality:
She trained for years with the Candlekeep guards but rather than copying her instructors she developed a fighting style of her own, relying on her agility and preferring light or no armor over the movement restricting heavier armors the guards would use, and slender curved blades rather than the more common but weightier longswords and bastard swords. Her fighting style makes her a fairly good dualist for a beginning adventurer but it also makes her vulnerable against groups and archers. Fortunately Gylliane has an attunement for the arcane arts and she has learned to use some basic arcane spells, thanks to Gorion's teachings, that enhance her fighting prowess. But as many inexperienced adventurers, she'd benefit greatly from more advanced magical training. Spells that buff her as a fighter and spells that strip her foes' protections interest her more than damaging spells or crowd control spells, though she will soon learn that especially the latter may well be indispensable for her to survive as an adventurer. With Imoen she practised certain thieving skills, especially sneaking and picking locks, but in a context of play and even mischief rather than one of formal training.

[I gave her the True Neutral alignment so that she wouldn't be affected by Unholy Blights that some priests cast in SCS (nor by Holy Smites that future party members may cast), but I I'll try to roleplay her true to her alignment. The fact that I'll be metagaming more than I usually do, does not detract from that. The metagaming will manifest itself more in quest order, rather than in behaviour toward NPCs.]
Unlike seekers of balance between good and evil such as Jaheira or unbiased mercenaries such as Greywolf, Gylliane isn't committed to neutrality as such. She's simply a flawed person, too flawed to be good-aligned. For example she adores elegant blades, especially the cutlass and the scimitar (along with the wakizashi and the ninja-to the only blades she's developed an affinity with so far), and she wouldn't hesitate to resort to theft to acquire an enchanted blade for herself. Other flaws include her somewhat quick temper and her resentfulness, both consequences of a sensitive and passionate nature when it comes to her interaction with others. In contrast, she'll often be indifferent about social issues that other people would have strong feelings about. This is due to a distinctly libertarian outlook on life. In her liberal worldview people ought to leave each other alone and at peace as much as possible. However she's highly deferential of life and liberty and disapproves not only of the lowlife murderer but also of the presumptuous paladin who kills a stranger to "enact justice". She loves a good duel, one of her favourite activities, but she's unlikely to pick fights and would resort to bloodshed only in self-defense. She's unlikely to display outright evil behaviour and she may even combat evil, though not retro-actively (to punish or enact justice when the damage has already been done, like the aformentioned paladin might do). Note that indifference may as well cause her to refrain from taking action in a given situation.
I'll post a first installment tomorrow.

I have read that in Baldur's Gate 2, enemies have such high THAC0 that having a high AC is pointless. Is this true?

So, the odds that a wizard-slayer will succeed are basically zero, aren't they?;) A WS solo run

Those who stay in touch with this forum probably know I'm currently on a totemic druid solo run, already in Amn. I'm having fun with this character and will continue. It looks like this month there will be more spare time for me so I'll be able to start another adventure and will switch between them.

I like challenges, especially those that seem to be unpopular ones. The question about which class (kit) is the most difficult for a solo run through BG games seems is being raised quite often. I'm yet to finish the saga with a druid but it seems my nature just wants more.

I will place here just several of threads where in one way or another people say that a Wizard Slayer is one of the hardest characters to solo a game.

I tend to agree with this point of view. In my runs I rely heavily on potions, wands, amulets and other items. Having just finished BG1 with a druid, I can say that the main keys to the success were the Greenstone Amulet, the Shiel Amulet, potions of Magical Blocking (Protection), different rings and so on. Basically, the game was beaten by items rather than a character himself. What if there are no such items, some of them being considered OP by some people?

You know what? Challenge accepted.

I've created a dwarven WS, Valthur Blackrock is his name.

Being restricted by items a lot, a WS needs good saving throws and stats. No dualling here, because any dual-class can strongly improve a WS. No WS mods (although there's an excellent http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/24181/wizard-slayer-rebalancing-for-bg-ee-and-bgii-ee/ mod) because I want to test this kit as it is.

I know that in 1.3 patch a WS bonus against casters will cover ranged weapons as well as melee ones but while this patch is not out yet I won't change the game mechanics. As @ZanathKariashi‌ pointed out one day, WS's ability is not, and never should apply to ranged weapons, in every incarnation, even PnP, it requires a melee weapon, in melee combat. So while there's no official word on it, no modding in this part.

I have some basic ideas how I can overcome no items (except armor and weapons). Stupifier + a shield. Acid Arrows that count as +1 and do 2-12 acid dam no save, Arrows of Detonation, Arrows of Dispelling. I'm sure I'll find some other tactics as the run goes on but now I see a mace and a bow as a good combo. Throwing axes could give more damage and they get a WS bonus but there're no effects on axes, such as Biting, Piercing, Dispelling, Detonation and so on. Stupifier may be not so impressive, damage-wise, but it can stun even the Death Knight.

Having studied some rules about dwarven names and surnames (for i.e., http://www.stoneandsteelguildhall.com/names.html/), I've discovered their names often consist of 2 parts - prefix and suffix, while their surnames often reflect something about their clan, history or character.

Val means Magic/Magical and Thur means Hunter. And Blackrock just rocks;)

image

How (and whether) is it possible? Well, this attempt is here to bring some evidence to the myth about a WS. Will I become a Mythbuster? Or will I just prove this is unreal? We'll see.

I’ll try to play a no-reload SCS run with an option for minimal reloads if the character will be killed but I will feel myself attached to it. Also, your reactions, ideas and just a general discussion is much appreciated, as always ;)))

Let's Talk About Strength

$
0
0
I thought I could begin a weekly series here about the ability scores of NPCs in the game, comparing them with each other and seeing whether they make sense to the community, what reasoning there is behind them, and any other interesting stuff. Strength is a nice one to begin with because it's quite straightforward: a simple measure of physical might. It affects carrying capacity, what weapons the NPC can use, and whether they will get bonuses (or penalties) to hit and damage rolls.

STRENGTH Scores

8: Quayle, Alora.

The lowest score, but still not low enough for roll penalties, are represented by the two smallest races, perhaps reflecting that gnomes and halflings tend to be weaker on average. People who played the original Baldur's Gate will remember that Quayle came equipped with a weapon he was too weak to use - at 8 strength NPCs can just barely wear splint and chainmail, and wield light crossbows.

9: Imoen, Edwin (BG1), Tiax, Jan

Still on the low side of average, we have the other two gnomes here, making them the race with the lowest average strength. Still, the fact that they're all casters is probably some reason for that. Imoen's low strength is her only small downside in the stats department. At 9 strength a character can wield a mundane warhammer (there are always exceptions for magical weapons, which tend to be lighter).

10: Edwin (BG2), Viconia, Aerie

Edwin gained a little muscle mass in the sequel, his peers at 10 being two female elves, lol. 10 strength gets you battle-axes, scimitars, and maces (that's to equip and wield them effectively, not merely to carry them in your pack).

11: Dynaheir, Skie, Neera

Not much to say here. 11 is still around average, and the three NPCs are casters and a rogue, who don't need to work out to be effective in battle. Morning stars and bastard swords are available at 11.

12: Faldorn, Baeloth

12 I guess is the pinnacle of average. It's the benchmark to equip plate mail armour and medium shields, and wield heavy crossbows. For these reasons, I would guess it's the minimum you have to reach if you want to be a professional soldier in the Realms.

13: Branwen, Xan, Safana, Cernd

Around here we find non-combat characters who might like to get their hands dirty (though we won't be getting bonuses to rolls until we hit 16). I'm slightly surprised Xan is this high, given his very low CON suggests a frail character. Could he have had martial training as a Moonblade wielder? Flails and halberds are available at 13.

14: Xzar, Garrick, Coran, Nalia, Clara

A couple of surprises here. First, Xzar is rather burly for a caster, which I like: after all, there's no reason mages *have* to be physically weak. A bigger surprise for me is Nalia. Given how she is outclassed by Imoen in every other department, maybe the game makers wanted to give her a large (but mostly useless) strength advantage. Coran is the stereotypical finesse fighter, but his 14 strength is just enough for him to take up mighty two-handed swords. Garrick too!

15: Khalid, Jaheira, Yeslick, Mazzy

All four of these NPCs are warrior classes, and their strength is somewhat low for that role, but nevertheless 15 is the benchmark for elite warriors, as they can equip full plate mail and large shields. And in two cases, 15 is quite high for the NPC's backgrounds: Yeslick struck me as being slightly old and past his prime, whereas Mazzy is a Halfling, which have strength penalties. And striking a blow for gender equality we have the Harper duo with equal scores.

16: Montaron, Kagain, Eldoth, Rasaad

At 16 we finally get a bonus to damage. Montaron is a beast for a Halfling, just one point below their 17 cap. Eldoth is a big surprise here: somehow I saw him as being physically weak, to match his slimy personality. In fact he could've been a fine fighter with that strength, though maybe he just works out out of vanity, and to pose as a dashing hero.

17: Ajantis, Yoshimo, Keldorn, Valygar, Haer'Dalis

Ahh, fine company here. Professionals all, people who take their jobs seriously. I'm guessing that in his prime, Keldorn was an 18, and that Ajantis would reach 18 as he gets more experience. Yoshimo is very strong for a pure class rogue, and Haer'Dalis I'm guessing has some fiendish heritage that grants him superior strength.

18/Exceptional: Kivan (/12), Anomen (/52), Shar-Teel (/58), Korgan (/77), Minsc (/93), Sarevok (/00)

No NPC has a plain 18, after all only warriors would have the everyday lifestyle to get this strong. If 17 were the professionals, these are the people that take it almost too far. I almost can't imagine Shar-Teel in real life, with our perceptions of women being weaker than men, but she could tie Edwin or Cernd into knots (ok, Cernd would shapeshift, but you get my point). Kivan in my head-canon is a pinnacle of elven martial prowess, Anomen I feel trains excessively for self-esteem reasons, Korgan and Minsc live to fight, and Sarevok lives to kill. Oh, and at 18 you can use composite long bows for some reason.

19 Dorn, Wilson

For reference, 19 is the average strength of hill giants. Does that mean that Dorn could beat a hill giant at arm-wrestling? Seems a bit far fetched, but why would you have a half-orc NPC without 19 strength anyway? It's pretty much their one big draw. Wilson's strength is hard to place in comparison since a bear is built differently from a humanoid, much more for pure power.

20 Hexxat

Supernatural. 'Nuff said.

Phew, so that's it. Does your perception of NPCs change now you can see their strength scores up against each other? Are some just badly scored? Surprises, comments? Does it change your head-canon at all? How important is strength when you pick up NPCs? And finally, do you like the system they had in 2nd Ed where 25 was as high as strength went? Plus, just post your random thoughts about strength! Thanks for reading!

Discussion About Ideas For Future Challenges And Play-Throughs

$
0
0
Hey guys, I come up with a LOT of ideas for cool (at least in my mind) play-throughs, which is part of the challenge involved in actually playing them! My desire to play with a new character overwhelms my desire to continue playing with a current one. I've somewhat remedied this with a combination of willpower and posting threads dedicated to my play-throughs on this forum. I have two currently, and while both characters are still in BG1, they'll be moving on to BG2 and eventually finishing the game one day, so this is a thread where I'll be posting my ideas for new play-throughs, partly as a way to keep myself from rushing ahead with these characters, and partly as a way to judge people's interest in them. These play-throughs will likely be made into threads of their own, some with a deep story and heavy role-playing of the character, and others with a simple recap sort of style, like my Cavalier. Which style of writing they'll get will be decided partly by myself (because I might not be able to make a good story with all of them) and you guys, since your interest in the character bio I make will likely not always be equal. As I come up with new ideas, I'll post them in the comments, and add them into this first post as well, so you don't have to keep checking the first post for new ones. I'm also including a short directory for readers to understand the format I'm using. It may change slightly over time, but it should remain mostly the same.

Edit: After much personal debate (for possibly silly reasons I've listed in a comment) I've decided to officially let people post their own ideas here. (as opposed to unofficially, since I couldn't stop anyone from posting their own ideas, technically) This isn't done begrudgingly, so please don't think I'm going to hate you for posting anything. Please do post your ideas, especially if you plan to make a thread about the character's journeys. The format I've made for the character info isn't required at all, but feel free to use it if you like. I think it's nice and orderly, so if you agree, then use it at your leisure. Words for everyone! Wait, did I leave off a letter? Oh well...

Format: (spoilered to keep this post as short as possible)
Name: The name of the character.
Challenges: This is going to say either none, mild, medium, or hard, depending on the type of extra challenges I've applied. These challenges will be the party size, reload type (none, minimal, or limitless), and SCS. If I come up with other challenge types, I'll address those in future, but for now that's the only kind of challenges I'll have.
Class: The class of the character. Depending on other parts of the character's game, this could greatly increase or decrease the challenge.
Race: Self explanatory
Stats: This will say one of seven different things depending on the total roll of the character. They will be Commoner (>75), Amateur Adventurer (75-79), Standard Adventurer (80-85), Exceptional Adventurer (86-90), Hero (91-95), Demi-God (96-100), Deity (101-108).
Biography: This will always be spoilered, even if it's very short, just to keep the format the same. Unsurprisingly, it's going to be a bio on the character, detailing a bit of their life in Candlekeep and their personality and temperament. Alignment will be addressed in this section.
Without further ado, here are the first two ideas I have.

Tribin "The Lion" Murth
Challenges: Mild: Standard party, minimal reload (only on CHARNAME death), no SCS
Class: Fighter
Race: Halfling
Stats: Standard Adventurer (80-85)
Biography:
Tribin is a proud halfling warrior, refusing to believe that his race makes for poor fighters. He's trained his whole life to become the greatest warrior alive, and although he can't be as strong as his non-halfling counterparts, he is as strong as halflings can be. He's also incredibly dexterous, and quite hardy. While he certainly neglected his studies, he is intelligent, and is a cheerful and generally likable person, though certainly not commanding officer material. His refusal to accept facts and naivety however have made him quite unwise, and while this trait is not necessary for a warrior, it can get him into trouble sometimes. He is lawful good, not because he is a stick up the arse paladin, but because he is a hardworking, honest, and loyal person, who would definitely make a good rank and file soldier. His nickname "the lion" comes from his bravery and sometimes foolhardy courage, which has made him challenge even the most skilled among the watchers to duels. When younger, he would often lose, but always stood up again, refusing to lose until the watcher had surrendered, out of fear of seriously injuring the child. He always knew he had not won by his own skill, but would allow the duel to end, challenging them again at a later date. Eventually, he defeated every watcher in the keep in duels, and now desires to become a soldier and become the strongest among the army.
Merlin
Challenges: Mild: Solo, limitless reload, no SCS
Class: Mage (no kit)
Race: Human
Stats: Hero (91-95)
Biography:
Merlin is a wise and skilled young mage, having learned directly from his foster father, Gorion. His foster father has kept him from learning too much, however, but Merlin has studied on his own as much as he could. He has trained in many areas, and is a skilled person in many ways. He is quite brilliant, having studied, it is said, every book in the great library of Candlekeep. He has a great desire for learning, and so when he exhausted his resources for mental training, he turned to the physical, practicing his speed with sprints and races around the library with Imoen. It took time, but eventually he was able to match her in speed, and with this training he also became more sturdy, and learned how to breathe more efficiently while exerting himself physically. His quite book driven life has made him a bit less sturdy than he could be, however, but he accepts this as the consequence for following a life of magic. (he'll still have a 16 CON, but he's still a mage) He has done little in the way of sheer strength, focusing more on speed and endurance, but he is no weaker than an average man. He has also learned the basics of common grace and courtesy, and is a friendly and polite man. He is neutral good, having been raised in a way that would promote a wholesome and righteous attitude about the matters of life. He does, however, not always adhere to the law, believing that there are inherent flaws in it, and that only people of great intelligence are truly worthy of creating laws. And even then he believes there can be flaws in the system.
Yamyra
Challenges: Mild: Standard party, Minimal Reload (only on CHARNAME death), No SCS
Class: Shadowdancer
Race: Halfling
Stats: Amateur Adventurer (75-79)
Biography:
Yamyra was born to be in the shadows. From a young age she was shy and timid, preferring to be in the shadows and avoiding others. She even avoided Gorion, for though she cared for her foster father, she hated his teachings and admonishments. Poor Yamyra was a little slower than others mentally, and hated learning, because she always felt as though Gorion judged her for her poor performance. She was not stupid by any means, but simply was a little slower. Yamyra’s only true friend in Candlekeep was Imoen. Yamyra connected with Imoen, as they were both orphans, among many other things that were similar. They spent a great deal of time together, and would often race each other around Candlekeep for fun. Yamyra often won these foot races, due to her superior speed and endurance, but due to her shorter legs, Imoen was still a challenging competitor. Around Imoen, Yamyra never felt judged, and was a cheerful and friendly girl. She was cute as well, and often noticed Deder, the only other halfling in town, glancing at her. This only made her more embarrassed and shy, and she avoided him more than anyone else in town. She was not what you would call beautiful, though, but she was curvy and had an attractive face. It was hard to tell what she looked like, however, since she usually wore a loose fitting black and blue hooded shirt, and matching pants. She kept the hood up almost always, and was embarrassed to leave it down for long. As with most halflings, she was sturdily built, and her foot races with Imoen made her even more hardy. For someone so athletic, it makes sense that she would be somewhat stronger than the average person, but she was certainly no warrior. As for her alignment, she’s Chaotic Good, being a good person who would help others in trouble, but her shyness and general simplicity makes her dislikes laws and arbitrary rules.
Name: Enthar Ebonfist
Challenges: Mild: Solo, limitless reload, no SCS
Class: Monk
Race: Human
Stats: Hero (91-95)
Biography:
There isn't really a biography for this guy. He's a pretty standard monk with no special background. I've always wanted to do the solo monk thing, and I really wanted to do it now. His reason for going solo would be a journey of self-discovery more than anything. As for his alignment, it's a purely metagamed choice. Lawful Good gets me Rasaad's boots, (yes I will recruit him for them) and I might even consider getting a very nice scimitar as well, with a little help from a certain bard... It's not really a "solo" choice, but I know I could solo him if I wanted to spend frickin' forever on it. I don't know for certain whether or not I'll take the scimitar, but I may. We'll see.

Pre-post edit: I decided I won't take the sword. It's just too out of character for a lawful good character. Still going to take Rasaad's boots, though.

A note on this character: This guy is not going to be role-played. I had a nifty idea for taking the "canon" BG1 team and then leaving them behind after seeing the havoc wreaked by taking others with him in BG2, but I just don't feel like trying to build a background for the character.
Merged: General questions!

Some general questions about spells, importing characters etc.

I have some questions regarding the BG:EE and BG2:EE. Thank you!

First off, is it possible to import your character from BG1:EE to BG2:EE as per the vanilla Baldur's Gate series?

Secondly, does the spell "Spell Immunity: Divination" in BG2:EE protect your character from True Sight and the like of which dispels the effect of e.g. "Mislead", "Project Image", "Simulacrum" etc.?

Thirdly, is it possible to export the portraits and/or soundsets of BG1:EE into BG2:EE?

Background: I wish to play through BG1:EE with my mage, but only if it's possible to continue into the Shadows of Amn and the Throne of Bhaal without having to "recreate" the character. I think that the enhanced editions of the Baldur's Gate series are very well made and big thanks to the developers.

I've been searching around the net and I have come across instances in which I believe you can gain multiples of great items without cheating/importing, I'd like to see if you guys can confirm these or mention of any notable items I have missed from BG1 Vanilla (I have no money for EE <3):

Dead shot x2 :
First time found on Hakt, Bandit Camp. Second time I believe on a Ghost in Firewine Ruins (unknown if possible to collect in BG1 (Shar-Teel will be testing this with a Dagger of Venom and Greater Masion in effect).

Gauntlets Of Weapon Expertise x2 :
First time found in Firewine ruins. Second time, in only vanilla unmodded, on Tazok if you kill him at the Bandit Camp, tested.

Plate of the Dark x3 :
First time on Tamoko, killing her the first time you meet her is surprisingly simple. Second time, I believe on a Ghost in Firewine Ruins, untested. Third time, on the demonknight when he first appears in Durlag's Tower, untested.

Ring of Free Action x2 :
First time underneath Candlekeep. Second time, on a gnome in Ulgoth's Beard, untested.

Robe of the Neutral Archmagi x3:
First time sold once at High Hedge. Second time on Shandalar, tested. Third time on Dradeel, yes I am heartless <3.

Wolfsbane Amulet x3 :
I believe 3 can be found from Dradeel, untested.

Evermemory, Robe of the Evil Archmagi and the Stealth Boots are too well known to be included ^^

So what's up with BG 3 and what would you like to see it be?

Ever since these remakes of my favorite RPG came out, I've been looking at what's been said about the possibility of BG 3 being a possible project. I'm excited about this, because if it continues the original storyline then your main character and the NPC's that transfer through will attain a ridiculous level and I would like to see what they do with new abilities for these levels. I only have two real concerns though that I feel are relevant. One is that I'm worried they might deviate from the established storyline which is a huge turn off for me as a day-one player. By that I mean that I think they might do their own thing with BG 3 if they make it, and while that could make for a great game, it might be a kick in the nuts for the people who played when BG was on six disks. That concern aside, my real worry is what rule set they will implement if they make the game. I know 4e is the new thing out there, and while I haven't played 4e yet, I haven't heard much in it's favor either. Now mind you, I don't know anything about 4e rules or gameplay, I just know that I've been told it's poorly balanced and some have even said that it really sucks compared to 3e and the 3.5 revisions. I've been playing 3e and 3.5 for a good long while now, probably not since it came out, but for a long time. I know most of the content of that rule set and I have to say that I was happy with what NWN did with 3e. People in the older posts here have been saying that "IF" they make BG 3 it would "HAVE" to be 4e and to be frank, that notion in ridiculous. Personally, I believe that 3e and the 3.5 revisions are very well balanced minus a few points like Deathless Frenzy and other similar game breaker capable character abilities. Not to mention the plethora of content available for 3e, if you count any of the non WOTC books there are in the area of 90+ books to draw from. And even if you don't include non WOTC content there are still a ridiculous number of classes, monsters, feats, spells, prestige classes, playable races, etc. Five Monster Manuals, Fiend Folio, Complete Mage, Complete Divine, Book of Exalted Deeds, Book of Vile Darkness, and on, and on. I would love to see the complexity that 3e and 3.5 offers brought to life in its entirety. Multi-classing beyond two classes, meta magic feats, monstrous races for PC's, actual feats when you level, the complete collection of available spells and class features, you know, playing a warlock/fighter that can use hideous blow through his full blade because you have the option of taking exotic weapon proficiencies... that kind of stuff. Now tell me that last sentence didn't make you at LEAST think of the possibilities a bit more than before. Playing a Dragon Wrought kobold, or implementing actual skill checks, allowing you to make your own build and not just some cookie cutter pre fabricated character. I don't know about you guys, but I would pay 100+ dollars, right now, for a game that accurately presented all 3e - 3.5 materials in their entirety. And I would probably play it until my fingers fell off and my eyes bled, and then I still might try with my feet by ear. I've heard it said that the amount of work it would take to make such a monster of gaming would be massive, and I agree with that. But God help the rest of the RPG world when a company does make such a game, because they're going to flood the block with it and absolutely decimate any semblance of competition in their franchise. I can see Beam Dog metaphorically disemboweling gaming giants like Blizzard with a masterpiece of such epic magnitude. To hell with WOW, let's see MMORPG BG 3 with single player functionality and full 3e - 3.5 content... and BOOM goes the dynamite. A nuke to the gaming world leaving nothing but shadows on the concrete, the only remains of once proud companies that thought they knew what an RPG was, but woe to the ignorant fools, they had not truly seen the sun, for it was only just the dawn... a bit much? I can see gamers putting down their dice and grabbing keyboards and mice like they had been poisoned and the antidote was in their computer. I see the bar being raised to an unattainable level in the RPG world and the stragglers being left forever in the dark. In short, I see a new standard of gaming excellence only inches from Beam Dog's fingers. An RPG that was instantly accepted as an awesome triumph, more that ten years dead, risen like the Phoenix, and the possibility of a sequel to bring the Lord of Murder back onto the field with the massively expanded possibilities of 3e - 3.5 content. Two things that come to mind are the Epic Level Handbook and The Book of Elder Evils for things that could challenge a God. Maybe Asmodeous, or possibly Orcis, the possibilities are so open it's ridiculous. Maybe our character has offended the Gods by ascending from a mortal and we have to duke it out with Helm or Mystra, who knows? No one, that's who, unless someone makes the game. All I can tell you is that if such a game were to come into being, I would throw down mighty on it! Sorry for the REDICULOUSLY long post, but God I'm excited about the possibilities for BG 3... anyone who made it to the bottom of my ranting, please let me know your opinion. :)

I will be playing a Sorcerer. I want to beat BGEE, and import my guy into BG2EE. I don't know anything about D&D, but I love RPGs. I have beat ton of RPGs my favorite of all time being Dragon Age Origins. Chrono Trigger, and Final Fantasy 4 are close though.

Since I don't know anything about D&D what should my Sorcerer build be in BG1EE.I' am gonna be an Elf I rolled an 89-str 13, Dex 19, Con 16, Int 15, Wis 10, Char 16 is that OK, or how to spend 89 points.

When you enter the catacombs and find your old friends who are dopplegangers, does this mean they were always dopplegangers? Or have they been killed by them and taken their forms?

(It's been a while since I played this part :P)

I am planning on doing a special run, where all the characters play the exact opposite of their normal roles, e.g. mages fight on the frontlines with fighters healing them up ^^

So far I have:

Kagain, a brilliant fighter however in this run, he becomes a healer/meatshield XD I will get the Vampire sword on to him, then use the Sword to heal my guys after/during battle and simply rest him to heal off the damage :D

Mordaine/Xan, both good mages but with the right items, they can become deadly in combat. Xan has no health? Potions of Fortitude will solve that no problem :D (remind me what happened if you drank a potion before a level up?)

Those are a few of what I have lined up for this fun run but I want more ideas on which I should run :)
