This game holds up to the test of time

I have played console games and D&D since the 70's but never got into PC's.

I had a botched surgery and got put in the hospital, while visiting a friend in San Francisco, for 2 weeks. Baldur's Gate had recently come out and my friend brought me a laptop with BG loaded on it. It changed the way I gamed forever. It allowed me to keep my sanity while I was laid up in the hospital and brought back feelings from my days of D&D as a child. I never touch console games anymore.

I bought BGEE recently for $4.99 and I haven't stopped playing it since. It runs super smooth and the load times are way better than I remember them being in the late 90's to early 00's. I love the tactical aspect and the fact you need to know so much to succeed.

I can't wait to play BG2 again.

I do hope they do the same thing with the Icewind Dale series!

Quick question about romance

$

Ok, so I have romance with Aerie and I hadn't had the talk for a long time now.

I checked the Keeper and there is my question:

1) As I understand it, parameter AERIEROMANCEACTIVE with value "1" means that the romance is active, right?
2) So, is the value next to AERIEROMANCE given in real time seconds? If yes, then something happened, because currently I have it 1169388 which would mean over 300 hours till next talk oO

Can someone confirm it? Thanks in advance :)

Come share your odd gaming habits! What do you refuse to do in BG? What wierd ideas do you love?

It seems like a lot of people like to make their games more "realistic" or more "awesome!" by creating their own rules or play-styles. Many people refuse to use certain tactics, or like to adopt some odd, unorthodox techniques for roleplaying reasons. Many others like to sacrifice POWER! for STYLE . Other times people do things or refuse to do things because it would be out of character (like refuse to case Animate Dead with cute little Aerie like @Dragonspear ). Others, like @belgarathmth don't enjoy using bags of holding or switching/carrying copious amounts of items because they think it breaks immersion.

So I thought I'd start a thread where everyone can share their oddities! A chance to share your ideas and eccentricities.

Okay, I'll start.

I never backstab with quarterstaves, because I think sneaking around then poking someone looks lame!

Is it possible to Solo Level 1 the BG Saga?

Is it possible to Solo Level 1 the BG Saga?

Class: FMT
Difficulty: Core, except at Character Creation to maximize HP

Roll = 90
Str = 18/00, Dex 19, Con 17, Int 15, Wis 3, Cha 18
-Fighter for equipments
-Mage for scrolls and wands
-Thief for Find Traps, backstab, pickpocket

-Alignment: Chaotic Good, Find Familiar: One that has invisibility 10 Radius
-All Thief Points to Find Traps -> 55 + drink Potions of Perceptions
-18/00 Str can break locks -> 45 + occasional knock spells / drink Potions of Master of Thievery
-Starting HP = 15, +12 from Find Familiar, +4 from Larloin's Minor Drain, +1d6 from Vampiric Touch (special), +5 from Helmet of Balduran, Max HP ~ 40
-BG2 lose Vampiric Touch, but gain Armor of Balduran +4 HP
-Pips Longsword++, Longbow++

BG1 THACO:
-Range (max) = 2/0: +3 from Dex 19 / +5 from Dex 24, +1 Specialization, +1 Helm of Balduran, +2 Bracer of Archery, +3 Bow of Marksmanship, +4 Arrow of Piercing, +4 Potion of Power
-Melee (max) = 8/4 : +3 from Str 18/00 / +7 from Str 25, +1 Specialization, +1 Helm of Balduran, +1 Gaunlet of Weapon Expertise, +2 Longsword+2, +4 Potion of Power

BG2 THACO
-Range (max, Dex 24) = -1/-2, Same as BG1, replace Bow of Marksmanship with Elven Court Bow +4 THACO, Tarlash Bow +5 THACO, THACO actually increases because some enemies require +2 or +3 arrows (arrow of piercing is normal or +1 weapon?)
-Melee (max, Str 24) = 4/2, Same as BG1, replace Longsword+2 with Blade of Roses +3/Blackrazor +3, Angurvadal +5

-BG1 Strategy: Wand of Summoning/Fire/Cloudkill + Archer, occasional elemental/magic resistance from green scrolls/potions
-BG2 Strategy: Wand of Summoning/Fire, Simularcum + scroll exploits (helmet with 1 free casting per day), occasional elemental/magic resistance from green scrolls/potions
-ToB Strategy: Clay Golem (immune to all except death spell/blunt weapons), Wand of Summoning, Simularcum exploit, occasional elemental/magic resistance from green scrolls/potions

-I foresee that this setup should be able to overcome all storyline encounters except the Amelissan final battle. The only problem in this battle is the initial setup. Amelissan likes to summon a lot monsters and my solo PC will be overwhelmed.
-The only other difficult challenge is the level 3 Watcher's Keep where you have to face at least 1 demons encounter.
-I may miss equipments that can further enhance my PC survival and THACO.

Questions:
-Does a level 1 simulacrum clone automatically die because a level drain of level 1 = level 0?
-Is longsword the optimized melee weapon for the BG saga? I think a shield is necessary for AC purposes and longswords have the most variety, availability and effects.
-How to tell whether a monster deals blunt or slashing attack? It's trivial for opponents that use weapons. What about trolls, werewolves, mindflayers, demons, etc? Stab animation = piercing? Claw animation = slashing? Punch animation = blunt?

Dispel Magic - Help me understand it

$

First of all, just to be clear I do have SCS installed, and that's it.

I'm having trouble understanding Dispel Magic... either that, or I do understand it correctly and just got incredibly lucky against Nimbul. I'll explain:

So my level 1 Inquisitor cast Dispel Magic at Nimbul while he had Stoneskin and Mirror Image up. To my disbelief, it was successful at dispelling both! (and I won the fight). The reason I was so surprised is that based on the spell description, I would've had a 1% change of successfully dispelling, because Nimbul is a level 7 mage/thief apparently... 7 caster level minus 2 caster level (Inquisitor is doubled) equals 5... 50% base chance of dispelling minus 50% (5x10%) equals 0%... and hence only a 1% chance to dispel (hopefully that all made sense).

So unless my logic is incorrect, I just got incredibly lucky... or am I missing something?

Thanks for any help/input!

Dwarven Rune Wardstone, possible bug?

Could be a possible bug, but I really dont know.

Thing is, I entered Durlag's Tower for the first time without a previously obtained Ward Stone from Ulgoth's Beard. And I could clear the top floors and enter the first big dungeon level(1) without problems.
To get into dungeon level2, you need another wardstone, dropped by one of the 4 guardians.

So whats the first Dwarven Rune Wardstone™ for ? Where is it needed?

Manual questions

So far I read that max is 2,950,000XP(Multi and Dual). But on youtube Ive seen players with more than that?
What is the XP/lvl limit?
I recall from PlayersHandbook(PHB), that nonhuman race had a lvl limit and human didn't, I havn't found anything about this here?

When playing forexample a human fighter. 9lvl is 250,000XP. (Max dice HP gain right?)

If you then deside to dual to cleric, do you then start all over with XP, so the clerics max will be 2,950,000XP or 2,700,000XP. I know you start with 1lvl when dual to new class.

Quote:"FinneousPJ":BG2EE comes with ToB where the XP limit is 8 000 000.

Quote:"Yamcha":There are modified files that uncap the XP limit, so you can reach up to level 40 (40/40/40 f/m/t e.g.).
Exp Cap Remover: http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/10212/a-simple-xp-cap-remover/p1

If your fighter is pecialized(special or M,GM), in a cleric weapon, forexample maze, would the cleric then gain XP when using this weapon?
Will the cleric be enable to use the fighters specialization? Or how does this Works now?

Attach, as far as I can see the fighter can't attack farster than 2 APR(PHB said 5/2 for GM) due to spesialization. Then at lvl 7 come 1/2 APR from specialization, giving 5/2 APR right?

A fighter at 9lvl with 18con, have 126HP.
If changing to cleric would the HP gain start again from lvl, cleric lvl 10? -> 128HP? This is much higher than normal cleric at lvl 10 -> 92HP.

Thank you for reading. And I might add, more questions later ;-)

So far I got this manuals, are there other?

Your most memorable moments of BG, PS:T and IWD *SPOILERS*

My first run of BG2 had lots of amazing moments, one of them, I was fighting against the Shadow Dragon, Anomen was lending his armor to Mazzy, I wasn't low level, I DIDN'T HAD A SINGLE GOLD PIECE!! I had like 900 or fewer gold at this time (fuck you Gaelan Bayle and the shadow thieves) so I was doing more quests to buy a full plate armor for Anomen, because he is a knight idiot gave his armor to Mazzy, Charname was in the Traveller's Robe Aerie had, and Hairy D (Haer'Dalis) had a, um, well, he had +2 Chain Mail of the Dead.
image
After some months, I won the game, and a week ago I installed Ascension, and I wanted to give the final battle a try, but before doing so, I installed SCS too. Mazzy got chunked by Yaga-Shura after getting at 21 Hit Points by Illasera's arrows (I think she is the deadliest one, 40 DAMAGE WITH A BOW DAMNED BAATOR!!).
image
Then, no one could even stay alive, but Charname had a trick in his sleeve, Ur, I mean, he had a Chain Contingency set :P but no one died, their Hit Points are over 200!!! (at least for the fighters).
image
But running with the Staff of the Magi didn't save him from the Anger of the Five or either Sarevok, again, damn Illasera for being so tough and Balthazar for having DISPELLING FISTS, still I can't beat them (only tried two times :P) I found this moment of feeling beaten amazingly noobish, and Ascension is a mod worth to try.
But even the PC was dying, then, he won't welcome oblivion, but HE WAS GOING TO DIE! And I couldn't save him :P There was no way to save a M/T with 15 HP and with no protection from those warriors, not to mention that he was dumb enough to sleep in the middle of the fight, he was feeling bad, so he did so.
image
I think I will go to give this yet another try!!!

Exporting Jaheira to BG2:EE - Dexterity and Wisdom

$

I am at the point of BGEE where you can use a tome of wisdom to boost an ability and am wondering if I should use it on my charname or an NPC.

My question is the following: I know that Jaheria's dexterity will be modified to 18 in BG2EE. If I export her from my final save file to BG2EE, will she still gain the 18 dexterity boost and maintain the modified wisdom (18) from the 3 tomes of wisdom I plan to use on her? Or by exporting her, will she keep her modified wisdom and maintain her lower BGEE dexterity?

Tomes/Lum the Mad Boosts? (Stat boosts in general)

$

Who do you use the stat boosts you get from the Tomes and Lum the Mad on?

For the tomes I use them on CHARNAME as only CHARNAME can transfer from BG to BGII.
He left with STR 19/DEX 19/CON 19/INT 10/WIS 16/CHA 19, using all 3 WIS tomes on him and 1 of all the others.

I then got a futher -1 WIS (dream choice), +1 WIS and +1 CHA from the Hell Trials, bypassing the horrible -1 DEX trial (The largest punishment in game for being good, I really dislike this, why punish good characters so harshley?).

When it comes to Lum's boosts I find it a little different as it can be more usefull to boost your party.

On my current CHARNAME (a Cavalier) boosting his INT (10) and WIS (16) will have no affect on him at all, boosting them is pointless.

I can however boost Imoens INT (17>18) meaning she can learn a futher 4 spells of each level, I could boost Aerie (16>17) but Imoen is my main mage on this run through, so getting her to 18 seems like the better idea.

As for the WIS boost I am not to sure who to give it to Jaheira (14>15) or Aeire (16>17), it will grant an extra second level slot to Jaheria or thrid level for Aeire. I feel the extra thrid level is better gameplay wise but RP wise Jaheira is CHARNAMES love interest so I feel I should give it to her.

So who do you boost and why?

Oh and my CHARNAME is now STR 21/DEX 20/CON 20/INT 10/WIS 16/CHA 21 after just one play through, which is nice.

Sorcerer AC?

I am playing the black pits II, and I made twin sorcerers with near identical stats. They both have 18 Dexterity, and currently no magical items granting them AC bonuses. But one of them has 3AC, which I had expected, and the other one inexplicably has a natural -3AC. The one with -3AC has four more points of Wisdom, but I highly doubt that'd make a difference. The -3AC will cast Spirit Armor and have -11AC, which I had thought to be kind of wild. Does the community have any thoughts on how there could be such a huge difference in AC?
EDIT - They are both Dragon Disciples, if that makes any difference.

Question about visual weapon and armor appearance

While i played Baldur's Gate enhanced edition i realized that some weapons don't look like they do on the inventory screen. An example would be the flail of ages. Is there a mod that changes the visuals of the weapons, so they look like on the inventory screen or do i have do configure something?

thief and good alignment question

Ok so I am having a hard time deciding what exactly my MP character's alignment would be: http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/27270/the-bhaalspawn-journals-roleplaying-multiplayer-game/p1

he is a thief, but also makes good decisions in general. he is neutral good atm, but I can't say he is perfect. he is indeed a thief, and I made him do the thieves guild quest and even the telescope quest. so that does not exactly make him the most lawful guy for sure. he doesn't go around robbing everybody in the world either. my robbing has been done on nobles and just quests. for example he is holding onto the golden pantaloons. then in decisions he does indeed make the good response, even sometimes when the law coming into play is the best outcome for the situation. if somebody needs help then he is certainly willing, and in some situations doesn't even want the reward depending on the urgency and the loots he may have acquired as a reward anyway. i have also been making him a bit more chaotic as we go because of Bhaal's influence, but even then he does the good thing, just that he may want to kill to do good because his blood tells him so. in the temple of umberlee when he went to retrieve the child's body he was angry at the way she asked for money for a child's life that she killed, and killed everybody in there.

given this information, what might he be come BG2. i am not sure if the thieving outweighs decisions to make him neutral, but I have a feeling I would at least turn him chaotic good. or maybe he will gain a bit of restraint and retain neutral good in the end. i don't know a lot about how you would consider good thieves, but his thieving seems to be around Imoen, or maybe a bit more than her, and she is also neutral good.
