Scare tactics (no, not that idiotic show on Syfy)

While my knowledge of the game is fairly good, I'm nowhere near an expert. So, in an effort to improve my efficiency, I'd like to hear what some of you experts do to effectively use spells and abilities that scare enemies (e.g. horror). For the most part, I never end up using them because of the problems it creates, such as chasing down an enemy only to be drawn in to more enemies. So what are your secrets?

illegal abilities on NPCs - how do you feel about them?

Edwin's extra spells.
Minscs beserk ability.
Coran's extra bow proficiency.
Aerie's illegal multi-class combo.

... What do you think is all right for an NPC to have?

I'm sure I left out some options: there's an 'other', though! :D
(Also I couldn't find the older thread on this... sorry! n.n')

Mission Pack Save

I'm wondering if there is any way to get the Mission Pack save for EE?

It is curious that they left it out - Abdel Adrian and the Mission Pack is a solid part of TOTSC..

Hey guys,

I know It's a bit ridiculous that I dropped this key. I should have assumed I would need it. I've been roaming around trying to find the key after I had dropped it. Is there any way that I can retrieve this key again? or do I either a) have to restart from a previous save before I killed the guy who held it or b) find where I dropped it.

I think I dropped it onto a dead body that has disappeared... -_-

Someone teach me how to use buffing potions!

Hey guys, so I've been thinking. I never use potions other than for medicinal purposes. Very useful to cure disease, remove poison effects and heal hp.

Yet I've been thinking that I'm missing out on a lot and have been considering branching out my medicine cabinet to include the various types of steroids. I know potions of invulnerability are great for your saving throws, but what else should I use? I have a huge problem saving ALL my expendable resources (wands, potions, bolts for my party with no proficiency in crossbows, etc.) so it may also be important to know WHEN I should use them.

Can anyone give a little guidance on the best potions in the game, and for what situations I should use them? Also where are the best/cheapest potions available?

Thanks :)

isn't it funny how Imoen would call say to a dwarf that "you sure grew tall quick!!"

it almost sounds like a nasty comment about my height as a dwarven defender...

Do they eventually make you choose between them? I have read conflicting posts but they were older posts on different forums.

How Does Proficiency's Work With Dual Classes?

$

I notice in shadowkeeper that there is 1st class and 2nd class proficiency slots. I would like to know how that works.

I think i know, but i am unsure, any clarification would be appreciated. I think it goes something like...

For example, say i want to be a Cleric/Fighter, and i start with a Cleric as my first class,

I become proficient (one slot) in War Hammers, and Two Weapon Style

Then i dual class to fighter, i lose the proficiencies gained in cleric...Now, as a fighter, i get "Mastery" in War Hammers, and "Specialized" in Two Weapon Style...Then when i finally reach the xp of my original Cleric, both are combined, thus: Grand Mastery in War Hammers, and Mastery in Two Weapon Style...

Is that how it works? or does it work differently? Thanks.

What Is Your Favorite Cleric Kit?

They all have interesting advantages actually, and i was surprised to learn that the one i think is the best...or at least my favorite, is considered the worst by "playithardcore.com"

The 3 kits, if you didn't know, are:

Priest of Talos:
Advantages: May cast "Lightning Bolt" once per day for every 5 levels of the caster (starts at 1st level with one use.) May cast "Storm Shield" once per day per 10 levels of the caster (starts at 1st level with one use).
Disadvantages: None.

Priest of Helm:
Advantages: May cast "True Sight" once per day per 5 levels of the caster (starts at 1st level with one use). May cast "Seeking Sword" once per day per 10 levels of the caster (starts at 1st level with one use).
Disadvantages: None.

Priest of Lathander:
Advantages: May cast "Hold Undead" once per day for every 5 levels of the caster (starts at 1st level with 1 use). May cast "Boon of Lathander" for every 10 levels of the caster (starts at 1st level with 1 use).
Disadvantages: None.

------
While Storm Shield and Boon of Lathander are far superior to "Seeking Sword" (exception perhaps for early BG1), I love being able to use "True Sight" for Priest of Helm. I feel like i am a paladin (inquisitor) with it :D. And it frees up my/my mages level 6 slot for better spells.

I didn't understand how good that was until i picked up Keldorn, being able to cast True Sight like 6 times a day was amazing, and imperative in Shadows of Amn.

Still, i can definitely see Priest of Lathander being perceived as the best, as those are great combat buffs.

Priest of Talos seems a little subpar to me compared to the others, as Storm Shield, while definitely pretty amazing, is somewhat situational, and the immunity you want is usually just one of the things listed (fire, lightning, etc), and can be remedy'd by lower level cleric spells such as Resist Fire, etc.

On second thought, i completely forgot that it can stack with other buffs (dur thats what clerics do)...hmm, ya thats pretty damn good...

Idk, its tough to choice for me. Although i understand that you can simply pick up Keldorn for True Sight instead of using the PC, it would be interesting to go without him, and i would serve as the true sighter. However objectively i can see the Good Priest being the best....

Of course, i lack the experience of testing these out, so i could be wrong in judging any of them.

Anyways, what is your favorite kit? And which one do you think is the best? Im trying to decide which one to do for Shadows of Amn.

Update System Requirements

Based on this quote from Trent, I think the system requirements should be eventually re-written and updated for BG:EE and BG2:EE. I was able to run BG:EE seamlessly before 1.2 and BG2:EE has the same FPS issues as 1.2 with my hardware. The fact of the matter is that certain hardware that met the posted requirements for the game can't run it smoothly anymore since 1.2 and many people who met the BG2:EE requirements have the same issue with slowed down gameplay.

We've re-written major chunks of the file and memory handling, so performance choke points have changed.

These are the listed System Requirements for BG2:EE from the website

Operating System: Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo or equivalent
Memory: 256 MB
Storage: 2.5 GB of hard drive space
Video Card: Direct X 9.0c capable videocard

And these are the listed System Requirements for BG:EE from the website

Required System Memory (MB) 512 MB
Minimum Graphics OpenGL 1.1 compatible
Processor Speed (GHz) 1 GHZ

I guess the system requirements aren't exactly based on running the game smoothly, but the minimum hardware required to run it in general.. I don't know. I think it should be updated in the future

Missed Opportunities

Originally, I was going to write something about charm dialogue (because I couldn't find that thread), but, as I wrote this out, I realized it was more about missed opportunities in character development.

This weekend, I spawned most of the recruitable NPCs and charmed them (except Viconia, which I didn't want to bother with because of her MR) and then spoke to them. Some of them, like Ajantis, are no different when charmed v. not. Some of them talk about themselves a bit (Garrick talks about his music, Xzar tells you he's Zhent and has been sent to figure out who is spreading rumors about their organization), some of them give you info (Xan will actually give you a journal update on the Iron Throne - he says he is a diplomat of sorts between Evereska and human lands, is investigating the Iron Throne, but was locked up before he could find anything out). Two kind of caught my attention, though:

Safana, when charmed, will say something about how you're the only person she doesn't have to pretend to be attracted to.
Kagain got me. When you charm him, he says something along the lines of "I don't have any friends, so I don't know why you're talking to me. I don't know anything." Heart-breaking!

Really, I wish they hadn't just thrown all these characters out in BG2. I wish they'd developed them more deeply because so many of them have these interesting backgrounds we get little snippets of. Safana could have been a romance option and you could slowly peel back the layers to find a rather fragile girl, who masks her insecurities with sluttiness. Could have also unlocked another triangle with Coran (and one that would be better than Aerie and Haer'Dalis - yuck).
Kagain, maybe a friendship, maybe even the ability to change his alignment. A sad dwarf who results to violence as a result of his loneliness.

What other characters do you wish got more development? Recruitable or not.

Now that we have a clean slate, let's review the relevant stuff from the previous thread.
I said:

Corvino said:
Spook is arguably the best of the bunch. It's single target but gets a hefty save modifier (up to -6) as you level up. It's very useful against tough enemies that cast or have special abilities, because enemies that are panicked usually stop using their casting scripts and will often just stick to melee.

So hitting Firkraag with Greater Malison, Doom and then a couple of Spooks to beat his MR turns a nasty dragon who uses wing buffets, dragon breath and various spells into a frightened melee target. He hits hard, but at least he's not toasting your mages for giggles.
nano said:
You don't have to chase them; just proceed as normal and they will come back one at a time to be cut down. Chaos (and SCS blindness) is problematic too because enemies will run around willy-nilly and might go after your characters anyways. At least fear is predictable. They always run away and don't attack (or do they? I've never see them do it but @Corvino says feared Firkraag can melee). You can also stick to using it in enclosed areas, like fights in inns and bandit tents and so on.
deltago said:
Location, location, location.

If it is a wide open map, I usually don't use fear attacks. Having the enemies run around in different directions and out of sight lines can be annoying and their are more efficient ways to handle outside mobs.

Closed off indoor areas are ideal (think cloudpeak monastery or Windspear dungeon) as it is easier to contain and pick off fleeing enemies with range weapons andn it is also party friendly unlike other AoE spells.

However, closed off areas with a lot of corners (such as below candlekeep) can be even more annoying than wide open spaces because once the sight line is broken, your characters will stop attacking even if the target re-enters sight range. This makes it difficult to track down that one remaining enemy especially if there are traps in the area. Once again, it is more efficient to use other disabling tactics in these types of areas.
Edit: For some reason the quotes aren't properly being credited.

Can't believe I just noticed this cool BG2EE feature

Hi, I have only just now noticed that the interface pause button, that gives you the time of day if you hover the mouse over it, now has a sunup-sundown icon on it.

As the day wears on, you see a little sun icon that rises and then sets in the far bottom left on the icon. As the night wears on, there's a little moon icon that rises and sets.

So, the player can now see at a glance where he/she is in the day-night cycle.

It's gotten to where I really miss things like this and the red-diamond loot pickup feature whenever I play BG1EE.

Are there any plans to backport the BG2EE interface features into BGEE in a future patch? I would really like to have the day-night cycle and loot pickup features added into BG1EE.

Come share your odd gaming habits! What do you refuse to do in BG? What wierd ideas do you love?

It seems like a lot of people like to make their games more "realistic" or more "awesome!" by creating their own rules or play-styles. Many people refuse to use certain tactics, or like to adopt some odd, unorthodox techniques for roleplaying reasons. Many others like to sacrifice POWER! for STYLE . Other times people do things or refuse to do things because it would be out of character (like refuse to case Animate Dead with cute little Aerie like @Dragonspear ). Others, like @belgarathmth don't enjoy using bags of holding or switching/carrying copious amounts of items because they think it breaks immersion.

So I thought I'd start a thread where everyone can share their oddities! A chance to share your ideas and eccentricities.

Okay, I'll start.

I never backstab with quarterstaves, because I think sneaking around then poking someone looks lame!

Want to do every quest (possible) in game: Which PC?

As the title says, I'm looking for a PC capable of doing every quest in game, and ideally every NPC quest as well, and more to the point I want it to make sense. Since I feel I'd need to be some type of neutral to justify it, I'm thinking some type of bard, however, I am open to the opinions of the forum.

PS: This means in BG1 and BG2.

Possible Enhanced Treatments

Now that both Baldur's Gate games are rapped up, what will Overhall do with D&D from here? I know this is a stretch, but if Overhall were to do enhanced editions to the rest of the Infinity Engine games, what would they do first? I'm thinking they would do Icewind Dale, since it's share the most in common with Baldur's Gate. Imagine what Icewind Dale II would be like enhanced; they could possibly add cut D&D3 features.

Using BG1EE NPC Party in BG2EE

Just curious if anyone besides me does this? I exported my party from the final save of BG1EE and imported them into BG2EE. Just Xzar and Montaron. I know there in BG2EE , But in this play through, I considered them imposters :P

Thalantyr

Does anyone wish there was more about Thalantyr? He was an adventurer who retired, so I wish there was something more about his past reflecting in how the PC goes about his travels.

There just felt like there could be something a little more to Thalantyr than a retired conjurer locked away in his keep.
