Gorion Shot First

@Dee you requested it, so here it is. ;)

None of you can deny it. Gorion shot first. He cast his lightning bolt at that ogre before Tamoko even had a chance to cast her flame arrow at CHARNAME.
In the EE, you have bandits shooting first.

Imprisonment and Romance (BG 2 Vanilla)

So... a good few hours (ingame) after this disaster...
image
... I finally managed to get Aerie back in my party. I thought her romance would be messed up, since she had been removed from the party, and was just about to fix it with Shadowkeeper, when I noticed that the global variables for pre-imprisonment and post-freedom for Aerie seem identical.

Am I missing something here? When Aerie got Petrified in the past, the romance was clearly killed, which was rather annoying. Was Imprisonment always different, mechanically speaking?

The variables I know are:

AERIEROMANCE 6108453
AERIEROMANCEACTIVE 2
AERIESUMMONED 2
AERIESWORD 1
AERIETRANSOFORM 2
AERIEVAMPIRE 6

Is there anyway I can check ingame whether a romance is working normally?

Thanks!

Hey guys. Going through ToB, having a minor problem.

I got down to the final level of Watcher's Keep, talked to Demogorgon. Went back up to the knights, yelled at 'em. They went down, the ghost appeared, and I took the scroll.

Then I went to do a bunch of quests.

Now that I'm back, I'd like to kill that mofo. But when I get down to the final level, I can't talk to Demogorgon. The little dialogue thing won't appear. Is that right? I was pretty sure you could go and kill him at that point.

Also, one of those quests was Rasaad's quest. So now, whenever I have my party stopped anywhere, those little purple circles appear with a loud noise. Every few seconds. Um...anyone know how to stop that?

I appreciate any help!

Ranger/Cleric or Fighter/Mage/Cleric?

I'm going to start a new game, and I'm trying to choose what class I'm going to play.
I'm hesitating between R/C and F/M/C.
I want a character who is reliable in melee, can deal a lot of damage, and offer support to the party (by tanking, hhealing, buffing or de-buffing).
What class do you think would be best?

Beastmaster dies when familiar dies?

$

I (probably mistakenly, LOL) decided to give a beastmaster a go for the first time. I actually was enjoying it until my familiar was killed by a single blow from a dire wolf (must've been a critical hit?), and my character instantly died along with it. At that time, I was at level 1, with 15 constitution, 11 HP at start and 17 total with the familiar present.

My understanding is that a character loses a point of const plus half the familiar's HPs when a familiar dies. Since my character's starting HP was 11, shouldn't she have lost 1 HP for the loss of con (the bonus point gained from having 15 con), plus 6 HPs as half the familiar's HP total, still leaving her with 5 HPs?

On a side note, if I had actually made it to the 2nd level and level'd up, would the familiar have level'd up too? I know familiars are more powerful if your character is at a higher level, but is that only if the familiar is created at a higher level?

Caster Incantations.

Ever wonder what the casters say as they cast a spell? Does it have any meaning? Or is it just random gibberish?

I've been doing a bit of research. Each school of magic (Conjuration, Evocation, Illusion, etc) has a different "chant" associated with it. They are all in Latin. Latin words have various interpretations/meanings, and these words are not sentences. Individually they mean something, but when put together, a coherent sentence they construct not. Neverthless, we can get a rough meaning for them. For example, "Voco" can mean to call/summon/invite, depending on the sentence you use it in.

For another example, anyone casting a Necromancy spell will say "Vita Mortis Careo," which means "I am deprived of life." (This is one of the clearer ones.)

So here are the eight schools, covered with their (approximate) meaning/meaning of words contained within the incantation:

Abjuration: "Manus, Potentis, Paro." Roughly translates to "The hand of the Mighty One is set."

Alteration: "Praeses, Alia, Vero." Roughly translates to "Protect(ing) another with certainty." (This should have been assigned to Abjuration, methinks. Nevertheless, onward we proceed...)

Conjuration: "Facio, Voco, Vere." Roughly translates to "Yes, I summon it truly."

Enchantment: "Cupio, Virtus, Licet." Roughly translates to "May I have the power I desire," or "I desire power, may I have it."

Divination: "Scio, Didici, Peto." Roughly translates to "I have learned for I have asked," or "I know for I have sought." (Very fitting.)

Illusion: "Veritas, Credo, Oculos." Roughly translates to "I believe the truth is in the eyes." (I love the irony of this.)

Evocation: "Incautus, Pulcher, Imperium." Roughly translates to "I command beautiful, uncertain/unforeseen things."

Necromancy: "Vita Mortis Careo." Roughly translates to "I am deprived of life."

Now, I do not know Latin. I merely looked up the different words/derivatives and drew my own conclusions from them. Some were easy to translate, others were not.

(Ah, very good. I have deciphered this "Latin" scroll without the unfortunate side effects of my last research project. I should be impressed with myself, but of course, this is a tiny fraction of my capabilities, and thus, nothing overly impressive for a man of my stature.)

Interesting Dual Class Combinations

Everyone knows about the tried and true combos such as Berserker->Cleric and Kensai->Mage. But I wonder if anyone has tried dual class combinations that may not be optimal but are interesting.

Maybe something like an Assassin dualed to Fighter at lower levels for the +1 to hit and damage and poison weapon. Emphasis on ranged weapons. Not much of a thief, but certainly a different take on the fighter. Could also be dualed to mage for Melf's Minute Meteors + poison.

Or has anyone tried dualing a spell casting class into one that isn't? Of course, it wouldn't be anywhere near as effective as going the other way around, but I wonder if anyone has tried it and made it work.

Anyways, I'm interesting in hearing people's ideas and experiences.

Chronic Restarting Detox Camp

Hi, my name's demented and I'm a chronic restarter. I wasn't always this way, I use to play games with only one character and saw it through to the end. There would be no roleplaying or multi-classing. Baldur's Gate changed that. Now I can barely get an hour in without restarting the game. There are just too many possibilities.

I might start with a monk who's devoted to justice. She eventually gets kicked out of her order for her actions and becomes a Kensai warrior who metes out her form of justice to those she sees as guilty. Then I'll think of a cleric/wizard who's determined to uncover the deepest secrets of magic, but eventually goes insane from his quest.

I've tried playing other video games but I just get bored. For Bhaal's sake I played Metal Gear Solid 4 for the first time yesterday and all I could think about was my wild mage Anansi. I need help.

Are Belt and Liia Jannath supposed to be pushovers? (spoiler warning)

So, I'm doing a solo run as a sorcerer and just did the little even at Duchal Palace.
My question is really regarding our dear Grand Dukes, who died like flies the first few tries.

Liia Jannath is supposed to be "a mage of no small power" according to herself, and yet all she does is run around with her dagger trying to kill the doppelgangers. A few spells, stoneskin etc would be a nice addition to her. She shouldn't be trying to melee them at least.

Belt is supposed to be a lvl 19 fighter according to http://forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Belt and yet he dies quite easily as well. Must be a day off for him...

Is this working as intended? @Dee

Stalkers are...awesome!

I've not ever played this class till now and currently my character is level 21. He is an absolute beast! I have to give thanks to 'thespace' for recommending this kit. If you want a stealthy light fighter then I think Stalkers are arguably the best. Single class, tons of proficiency points, awesome THACO, stealth, great APR, backstab, and some very cool spells to boot. The kit is definitely more of a specialist but man I'm amazed how good they are. At first I thought the x4 backstab would feel weaker compared to x5 but I didn't notice any difference especially when paired with critical strike. So for anyone who hasn't played one, I recommended it big time. They seem to be often overlooked. I know that was the case with me. At any rate, thanks for allowing me to go off on a tangent...lol. Oh and Merry Christmas to one and all!

The Tales of Sima Jin - A Noober's Journey in BG 2 (Let's Play Series)

Hey guys,

This is my first playthrough of BG 2, inspired by the master storyteller, 'Tord' of the Youtube Channel, 'mynameisnotlilly'. As a complete noobie to Let's Plays and BG 2, my first few sessions were pretty shaky, but I feel like I am learning and improving in both regards, and will now try to share/publicise my efforts a bit more. Hopefully a few of you will find it interesting/entertaining, perhaps reminiscing about your own 'first time' with BG 2 ;)

My Let's Play is the complete opposite to the only other active Let's Play on this forum (that I am aware of). Whereas 'zur312' is obviously a veteran powergaming silently through a heavily modded game that jacks up the difficulty, I am a BG 2 noobie roleplaying blindly (and not silently) through the Vanilla experience at 'Core-rules' difficulty. Whereas he only uploads the highlights from his journey, I am uploading every minute of mine to retain a complete record of my first adventure.

Anyways enough fluff, more details can be found in my original post below, and also on my youtube channel. Here's some handy links :)

My original post:
This is my first full playthrough of BG 2, and also my first attempt to record a Let's Play of any game, inspired by the master storyteller, 'Tord' of the Youtube Channel, 'mynameisnotlilly'.

Sadly I do not share his talent for roleplay or his radio-ready voice, so I do not promise any quality or level of expertise, either with regards to gaming or narration. In periods, it basically becomes 'Let's watch this noob play BG 2 whilst thinking out loud.'

I am now recording primarily for my own enjoyment, so that I will be better motivated to remain faithful to roleplay and so that I can look back on what I am sure will be an epic journey through the great city of Athkatla and Empire of Amn beyond. If anyone else might be interested in following my trials and tribulations, then I will steadily upload my adventures onto Youtube.

Oh yeah, I am playing BG 2 Vanilla, with the only installed mod being the BG 2 Fixpack (Corefixes only) from http://www.gibberlings3.net/

I would regard my run as 'semi-blind'. With the exception of the very beginning of the game, I have no idea what to expect. I have avoided all walkthroughs/guides, but I have read the Manual that comes with the download from GOG, and I also use the following resources to help me in my journeys:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/258273-baldurs-gate-ii-shadows-of-amn/faqs/13870

Oh and of course I've sought guidance on this forum. But always in a non-spoiler-ish and specific way.

How do I find the BG2 EE portraits to bring them into BG1 EE?

Your most memorable moments of BG, PS:T and IWD *SPOILERS*

$

My first run of BG2 had lots of amazing moments, one of them, I was fighting against the Shadow Dragon, Anomen was lending his armor to Mazzy, I wasn't low level, I DIDN'T HAD A SINGLE GOLD PIECE!! I had like 900 or fewer gold at this time (fuck you Gaelan Bayle and the shadow thieves) so I was doing more quests to buy a full plate armor for Anomen, because he is a knight idiot gave his armor to Mazzy, Charname was in the Traveller's Robe Aerie had, and Hairy D (Haer'Dalis) had a, um, well, he had +2 Chain Mail of the Dead.
image
After some months, I won the game, and a week ago I installed Ascension, and I wanted to give the final battle a try, but before doing so, I installed SCS too. Mazzy got chunked by Yaga-Shura after getting at 21 Hit Points by Illasera's arrows (I think she is the deadliest one, 40 DAMAGE WITH A BOW DAMNED BAATOR!!).
image
Then, no one could even stay alive, but Charname had a trick in his sleeve, Ur, I mean, he had a Chain Contingency set :P but no one died, their Hit Points are over 200!!! (at least for the fighters).
image
But running with the Staff of the Magi didn't save him from the Anger of the Five or either Sarevok, again, damn Illasera for being so tough and Balthazar for having DISPELLING FISTS, still I can't beat them (only tried two times :P) I found this moment of feeling beaten amazingly noobish, and Ascension is a mod worth to try.
But even the PC was dying, then, he won't welcome oblivion, but HE WAS GOING TO DIE! And I couldn't save him :P There was no way to save a M/T with 15 HP and with no protection from those warriors, not to mention that he was dumb enough to sleep in the middle of the fight, he was feeling bad, so he did so.
image
I think I will go to give this yet another try!!!

Alright, I entered the tomb of Dragomir and defeated him and Hexxat showed her true form. She said meet me at the Copper Coronet in 2 hours, but no matter how much (or little) time lapses he does not appear at the Copper Coronet. I have the cloak of Dragomir in my inventory, and I have tried going at night. Is there something I am missing, or is this a bug?

NPCs who best represent the main 8 classes.

$
0
0
I've been curious to see what characters people think are the best representation of certain classes. In other words which character best represents a mage, fighter, etc... The criteria is a based on authenticity, so a depiction that comes across as being genuine, convincing or realistic of what that class means to you.

It's going to be a purely subjective thing, especially in the case of something like a druid which relies on the concept of neutrality and that varies. Not to mention we all look for different qualities in people. So don't feel compelled to say what you think the answer should be, just go with your gut. I could see rationales for pretty much all the NPCs... well aside from Dorn since he is purposely the antitheses of the paladin, being that he is an Anti-Paladin. But if you are into playing evil alignments, then feel free to speak from the evil perspective.

Probably best to restrict the discussion to NPCs that join your party, but there might be a case where no joinable NPCs are good candidates, so then you could give suggestions of which non-joinable one would make the best Paladin, Cleric, etc...

When it comes to dual or multi-classing, then that NPC can be considered for both. So Anomen could be a candidate for best cleric or fighter, Aerie for best mage or cleric. With Rasaad, he could be considered a cleric or fighter, since the monk usually falls within those categories. Even their stated Class is probably inaccurate like how Coran could be considered suited to the Ranger archetype than Fighter or Thief, so there is some room there. You could even say that Eldoth is the best portrayal of a thief, even though he is a bard or Anomen as best Paladin.

---

Here are my picks.

- Khalid for best Fighter. I usually see the Fighter class as being fairly generic and reserved for the token human of the group. So while Khalid is a half-elf, I find that he fits that role quite nicely. He does have the quirk of his lack of courage but I see it as being quite realistic of a front line fighter, since blind courage seems more fitting of a paladin.

- Coran for best Ranger. I'm ruling out Minsc because he is more of a Berserker to me and Valygar is out because he is too much of a hybrid. I was going to say Kivan but what changed my mind is that I see the Ranger as a bit of a vagrant or wanderer, someone who had a purpose but has since walked away from it. Kivan's vendetta against Tazok is what rules him out for me. Coran is the candidate for me because he isn't bound to follow anyone and jumps from one thing to the next without responsibility.

- Keldorn for best Paladin: I was going to say Ajantis since I typically see the paladin as being quite one dimensional but he lacks the authority that I find Keldorn possesses. Not to mention that Keldorn also has the status of what I think a paladin should have with society. Even his strained relationship with family is quite realistic of what sacrifices a paladin should make.

- Yeslick for best Cleric: This one gets a bit tough since there are some good candidates. I personally love Branwen the most but when it comes to embodying the cleric, I think Yeslick edges her out. Yeslick may also be a fighter with the backstory of a blacksmith, but I find he has the temperament of what I think a cleric should be. While the other clerics are all rather volatile, aside from Aerie who I find too passive.

- Faldorn for best Druid: This is another tough one but I find that Faldorn is the most committed druid of the bunch. Jaheira seems more caught up in being a Harper than druid and I see that her half-elf lineage helps
contribute to her infinity to nature. While Cernd seems to be more of a Native American caricature. With Faldorn she pretty much embodies the work of a druid to a fault, it's pretty much the entirety of her character.

- Dynaheir for best Mage: Probably not most people's pick but I like my mages to be rather mysterious with a bit of exoticism to them. It's one thing for them to cast spells, and to do them well but it's another thing for their character traits to be rather magical.

- Alora for best Thief: In the Forgotten Realms I see the thief as being a dextrous street urchin and Alora fits that perfectly. It also helps her case that she is a Halfling which pretty much dominates the thief class. Montaron is also another good pick for best Thief but he's too antagonistic for me.

- Garrick for best Bard: He pretty much wins by default since Eldoth is like a fallen Bard and Haer'Dalis is too otherworldly that his Bard qualities are overshadowed.

---

I'm a bit of a fantasy traditionalist so it's probably no surprise I have a preference for the BG1 NPCs who are rather safe portrayals. I imagine someone from another roleplaying background or someone who plays with an evil party would have a very different set of 8. Doesn't help that I was influenced by things like Tolkien and the DnD cartoon from the 80s at an early age, so I have a very rigid view of the 8 classes.

It would be also interesting to see who people think are the worst NPCs at embodying a class. That would probably yield a more interesting discussion. I'm seeing Nalia/Skie for Worst Thief, Quayle for worst Cleric with Mazzy/Jaheira for worst Fighter to start.
