What party for BG2?

$

0
I am getting close to finishing up my current run of BGEE with a blade PC (neutral half-elf, with proficiencies in scimitars, daggers, and 2-W fighting). Imoen (dual-classed to mage once she was a level 7 thief, to promote continuity with BG2) and Viconia are in my current party, and I'd like to have them in my BG2 party.

I eventually would like to add Sarevok (in ToB). Since I don't want to remove a character I've had in my party throughout most of SoA when I add Sarevok, I'd prefer to have a 5-member party in SoA.

So the question arises, who should the other two members of my party be?

In other words, I plan to have:

1. PC (half-elf blade)
2. Viconia (drow elf cleric)
3. Imoen (human, thief>mage) [Rejoins party in Spellhold]
4. Sarevok (human fighter) [Joins party at beginning of ToB]

The options that seem most interesting (to me) include:

A.
5. Minsc (human ranger)
6. Jan (gnome illusionist/thief)

B.
5. Korgan (dwarf berserker)
6. Jan (gnome illusionist/thief)

C.
5. Minsc (human ranger)
6. Haer' Dalis (tiefling blade)
7. Yoshimo (human bounty-hunter) [To be replaced with Imoen in Spellhold]

D.
5. Valygar (human ranger)
6. Mazzy (halfling fighter)
7. Yoshimo (human bounty-hunter) [To be replaced with Imoen in Spellhold]

Regarding option A: Minsc and Jan have some pretty entertaining conversations (iirc). Minsc is a solid warrior, and Jan would take care of both spellcasting and thievery during Imoen's captivity (and continues to be useful afterwards). My only worry is that Minsc would be the only full warrior in the party throughout SoA.

Regarding option B: I'd prefer to have a party that is 'neutral' in overall alignment (balancing any evil characters with good ones), so that inclines me against this option. On the other hand, Korgan is the best fighter in SoA.

Regarding option C: I think it would be interesting to have two blades in the party, especially since I won't have any mages until Imoen is rescued.

Regarding option D: Two solid warriors (Valygar + Mazzy) in the party would be nice, especially since they have some amusing chats (iirc). I vaguely recall that Valygar does not get along too well with Viconia, but perhaps there is a way to prevent a fight breaking out?

Thanks for any comments or suggestions!

Is there really a downside for my character and Claw of Kazagroth ?

It causes blurred image akin to Cloak of Displacement.
Reduces AC -1 ( to - 3)
Reduces missle ( to -11 )
Reduces Saving throws to 12/1/7/8/2, current 9/4/10/11/5

Only downside is the loss of 8 hp and of course 2 Con.
But you'd just use a Remove Curse spell before you level up . My current Con is 18. Current HP 53
And of course the + 3 to every ones favorite...Poison !
I was thinking of waiting until I had finished Cloakwood before trying it out.
Besides the Con I really don't see an issue...raising Con later is not hard, tome for one.
And poison resist rings are around somewhere.

And there is no telling what further ST rolls are going to occur. I guess I could cheat and find out but I like surprises.

I'm just curious what people's least like spells are. I'm just going to bring one up that rarely is probably even considered and that is Fire Seeds. 1 APR default, only 2d8 fire damage (save for half-damage and no damage bonuses with level), and you only get 4 of them with each casting. Plus its a level 6 spell. You can switch it between characters but its still not really much of a saving grace.

I just brought up one druid spell but feel free to bring up as many as you want from any class.

So, I posted earlier regarding alignment and have decided to remain good/neutral for the rest of the game.

Currently have: Minsc - full plate mail, gauntlets of weapons expertise, composite long bow, warhammer+2 and spider's bane sword

Kivan - long bow of marksmanship, long sword+2, chainmail+2, bracers of defense ac7

Imoen - short bow, studded leather armor, bracers of archery, boots of stealth

Mia (my mage) - adventurer's robe, bracers of defense ac8, cloak of the wolf, boots of avoidance, wand of sleep, wand of fire

Level 1 spells: magic misslex2, protection from evil, grease
(not using: sleep, friends, charm, armor, burning hands)
Level 2 spells: web, mirror image
(not using: agannazar's scorcher, stinking cloud, horror)
Level 3 spells: lightning bolt, dire charm
(not using: fireball, ghost armor)

Dynaheir - Knave's robe, sling+1, wand of lightning, wand of paralysis''

Level 1 spells: magic misslex3, burning hands, chromatic orb
(not using:)
Level 2 spells: mirror image, invisible, stinking cloud
(not using: horror, resist fear, protection from petrification)
Level 3 spells: fireballx2, skull trap
(not using: fireball, skull trap)

Branwen - plate mail armor, ring of holiness, sling (not using Flail+1)

Level 1 spells: healx2, entangle, protection from evil, command, sanctuary
(not using: shillelagh, remove fear, magic stone, entangle, detect evil, bless)
Level 2 spells: hold personx2, barkskin, chant, aid, resist fire/cold
(not using: slow poison, draw upon holy might, silence 15", find traps, know alignment)
Level 3 spells: rigid thinking, miscast magic
(not using: animate dead, dispel magic, strength of one, remove paralysis, gylph of warding)

Sorry, I know that's quite a lot of info.

Anyway, I've just reached the third section of the cloakwoods and have the option of taking on Faldorn and/or some guy who wants to kill a dragon (can't recall his name).

I feel a little bit overwhelmed by the magic sector of my party, even though I like a strong magic emphasis. Typically, I will scout ahead with Imoen while invisible, then for larger groups of enemies try and hit them with a fireball and/or web and/or stinking cloud from the periphery of their vision. I rely on ranged attacks and magic missiles, lightning bolt etc. but use Minsc for c2c when things need to get dirty. I find it frustrating trying to use crowd-control spells in combat since fireball obviously damages my own party, skull trap is slow and usually gets interrupted mid-casting etc. The wand of sleep is quite good though.

I have just started using Branwen and find the sheer volume of her spells a bit overwhelming. I like entangle, but haven't had a chance to try out hold person, miscast magic or rigid thinking since I'm mostly fighting spiders and shit. I also used chant, aid and protection from evil on my party before the encounter with that fat guy in the cave recently and found it useful.

So at this point, are there any redundancies or spells I should swap in/out? I feel like Mia and Dynaheir overlap in a lot of ways but like having two offensive casters. I assume Branwen will become more useful when battling other magic casters. I mainly keep Imoen because she's a thief but don't see the big deal really.

I'm wondering if I should take on Faldorn and swap out Kivan or maybe Imoen. Also, is that dude who wants to kill the dragon (again forget his name - he's in cloakwood pt. 1 I think) any good? Failing that, is it worth taking them on, completing their quests, then swapping back for your old members? Will the old members still be wherever I leave them?

One more random question - since special arrows are so expensive, should I be investing in them? Normal arrows seem to work fine for most purposes. Sometimes I'll switch to ice/fire/biting ones that I pick up when fighting special enemies.

Thanks for reading this!

Questions about evil bards and blackguards (lore)

Even though this is a question primarily about NWN and NWN2 I have put this topic in the general discussion category because I believe the lore might come in useful for BG players as well. There are one or two evil bards roaming around Baldur's Gate and Amn and I have always wondered which deities they might follow...

I was hovering around building a 'Black Bard' type character in NWN2 (Bard/Blackguard) and I was wondering about deities and the like in reference to these classes.

Question number 1: In the Forgotten Realms world, what deities to evil bards follow? I have come to a few conclusions so far - tell me what your opinions are on the matter.

- Cyric is the only god I can think of that will appeal to evil bards and is universal. I say this because the goddess Leira (http://forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Leira) was once an arch nemesis of Oghma, but was killed by Cyric who then took her portfolio of lies and deception etc.

I heard Tiamat is also available, but I figured that would be more for Dragon Disciples. Zehir (Yuan-ti) and Lolth (Drow) have also been mentioned as suggestions on the FR wiki but neither would really make sense for a human.

I just can't seem to find ANYTHING that suggests Cyric has an evil bard following. Nothing at all. It seems strange looking at his portfolio. What do you guys think? (To be honest even if Cyric is a good deity for an evil bard I am unsure I would be happy with this. I HATE Cyric.)

If I cannot find any decent options I am considering taking on the 'No Deity' option, which leads me onto the next question:

Question number 2: Are Blackguard required to be in the service of a dark god? I have always been of the impression that they don't. They just make a pact with the 'devil' (or demon) to gain their powers. If this is the case, I will happily roll a Bard/Blackguard with no deity chosen.

Cleric/thief racial restrictions - why?

$

How come that even though all races can be a cleric or a theif, they cannot become multiclass cleric/thief? Is it due to D&D rules or is there any reason?

Halfling seems just perfect for the class (thank you EE keeper!): No wisdom penalty, bonus to sling (only useable ranged weapon) and 19 DEX + bonus thieving skills + best Shorty Saves... It seems there is no roleplaying reason why a halfling is restricted from this multiclass? Only downside is a max 17 STR, but with DUHM it is no real downside...

i am compelled to explore everything! help!

every single last bit of black fog of war must be revealed. every possible zone on the world map must be revealed and explored in depth to make sure i kill all hostile creatures, and complete all possible random conversations

this is my problem. i noticed that it was getting very tedious, after restarting the game with a new character build, especially since i had just completely and utterly explored these areas 100% + 1 just the day before.

so i have to ask, how can i keep myself from doing this? i tell myself that i need the XP, isn't this true? isn't it absolutely necessary to get your character and companions the most XP possible? find all possible gear to sell and have the most gold and best gear available?

on the other hand i think 'well what if i wasn't so anal about exploring, then i wouldn't even know about those here mountains unless i accidentally took a wrong turn!'. i remember when i first played BG when it first came out, and i don't think i had this problem

Aldeth Sashenstar and the Druids

$

I think this one's been touched on before, but since I just reached it in my game I thought I'd check for some input.

To me this encounter seems to be unusually morally grey. At first sight I always figured the good-aligned thing to do was to help Aldeth out even though he seems very annoying and self-righteous - for one thing because the druids mean to kill him right away, and for one because of how skewed the dialogue choices are written: you can either side with Aldeth by asking Seniyad the druid to be reasonable and find a peaceful solution, or you can side with the druids by apologizing to Aldeth about how the druids have a great aloe vera balm, yada yada.

There seems to be at least two other things to consider though:

1. Aldeth and his hunting friends allegedly killed a druid - as the player you never get a chance to ascertain this, but I guess it's quite possible that they accidentally shot a shapeshifted druid while hunting.

2. (This one is what ultimately tipped me over.) As you know, if you help Aldeth you can later on visit him in Baldur's Gate, and help him once more with his doppelganger problem. If you then in chapter 7 when you are wanted by the Flaming Fist visit Aldeth inside his consortium, the ungrateful bastard will hand you over to the Fist - and this after you saved both his life (twice) and his consortium.

As for Seniyad, I originally thought he was a shadow druid (and hence fairly radical and evil - because that's how he comes across), but by all accounts he's just a regular druid, now taking extreme measures to protect his forest. Either way, having reviewed the possible chain of events I've started feeling that letting the druids have their way with Aldeth is really the over-all more good-aligned option - even though there's no way of knowing all this when you encounter him.

What do you guys think?

Will 20 const. always give you regeneration?

Or was this just a special ability that Kaigan had?

In other words, if I have a barbarian with 19 const, and I give her the tome to increase it to 20, will she be able to regenerate thereafter?

i just killed davaeorn and flooded the mines. but i forgot to take the letters off his body and read them. now wyrm's crossing isn't appearing on the map and i can't seem to access it by travelling anywhere?

i usually keep multiple save files, but only have one from the start of the mines and now one where i'm back in the city :(

A Witcher-like character

Hello ladies and gents. I'm a big fan of the Witcher stories, novels, and games. I think the author and the game developers do a great job of not only storytelling, but of the lore of witchers themselves.

Those of you that are familiar with the witcher, what are your thoughts on a class/kit that resembles a witcher's skillset? For example, one that jumps to mind for me is the Blade. The blade has combat prowess, can cast arcane spells but not as much as a pure mage, and is very adaptable.

What do you guys think?

Wait, what? Baldur's Gate and NWN connected?

I know that both take place in the same continent, but what is this?

I dl BG2 over GOG because I wanted to support the franchise and have a digital copy+wallpapers bla bla bla and to see if my save from BGEE could carry over - and it did!! anyway, I started it up (... im def getting the enchanhed edition for BG2 later as well) and then this came up during the game?!!!!!!!

1. they advs in BG2 for NWN??? very bizzare to do so during the story...
2. is it true, and what does it mean?
3. how will it work in the story?
4. BG 2 didnt look crappy in the GOG-version if you unlock HD modes.
5. Or is this just an update through GOG to make you buy NWN as well?

http://s14.photobucket.com/user/QuezcatoL/media/BGMain2013-07-2113-40-12-61_zps5b09cd03.png.html

I might pick up NWN1+ expansions/diamond versions over GOG if its true.

also I apologies if this is old news, I was 14 the last time I played Baldur's Gate II and never remember this.

powergaming party (BG2 TOB,NPC and multiplayer)

What is the most powergaming party that you can think of?

two different groups of posts
1) multiplayer created party by player. What classes/races (and items)
2) charname + npc's. What npc's
-this is not 1 vs 2 but creating 2 different threads for 1 purpose is silly
-bg2 tob exp limit
-no mods

and why is this the most powergaming?

for example
F/M/T half-elf - like kensai mage but +100dmg with backstab
Kensai13/Mage - i think everyone know why kensai/mage
cleric/specjalist mage - healer who is almost immortal
mage slayer13/mage - antimage
edwin - most spells

npc's
F/M/T op op
sarevok dualed to mage op
edwin - op op op
aerie - op multi
keldorn - op dispell
Cernd - SS f yeah

like you can see I prefer magic :)

After six years of hard work, it's finally here. I have so much respect for the BGR project team for pulling through and finishing this instead of abandoning it like so many others would have. They're my new favorite modders now.

Also, for multiclassing your companions without being restricted to one class (To make Ajantis a Paladin/Divine Champion/Annointed Knight, for example), do this:

-Open the NWN2 Toolset (NWN2ToolsetLauncher.exe)
-Click on Plugins at the top -> Campaign Editor
-Select BGR
-In the box at the right, Under 'Behavior', click 'AllowUnrestrictedLevelUp' and change it to 'True.'

Dual Class Question

I have a human swashbuckler who has dual-classed into fighter. During my time as a swashbuckler I have acquired 1 slot in Scimitar/Wakizashi/Ninjato. If I put some of my fighter slots into SWN will I lose the slots I gained from swashbuckler when I regain my lost class? I am aware that the original slot I gained is temporarily unavailable but will normally be gained back when I regain my class. However, I want to know if slots gained from both classes stack (so if I gained 1 slot in swashbuckler and 1 slot in fighter I'll have 2 slots when I regain my swashbuckler levels).
