Pure Kensai Viability/Build

$

Hey guys, so I've cracked out the BG series and I really want to play as a Kensai (no multi/duel class), but opinions seem really mixed

I plan on using a party of 4 for the most part, jaheira, edwin, thief char for bg2, unknown as of yet for bg1

I'm just going to play on normal this time around, I plan on using katanas and I am wondering things like what my stats should look like besides maxing out str con and dex.

Also in terms of gear, is there anyway I can make myself act as the tank for the group?

Any tips would be helpful, if it turns out impossible I will try beserker perhaps but I am really keen to play Kensai, thanks in advance :)

Mind Flayer tunnels (spoilers) question

Ok, so I am in the underdark (BG2) in the Mind Flayers caves. I am just outside the Mother Brain's lair but can't open the door. I know that you have to have a Mind flayer controlled to open the door, but I think I killed them all. There is one room to the east that is supposed to continually respawn Mind flayers, but now when I enter there, nothing. Is this a bug? or am I missing something?

NPC's, Romance and divine magic!

So i looked at the NPC's to figure out who i wanted to romance in my 3 player party. And then i noticed that every NPC you can romance (Anomen, Viconia, Aerie, Jaheira) are all divine spellcasters. Do you think this was made on purpose to make it easier to get them into your party? Or just a random fact.

The cowled wizards!

So we all know our dear Cowled Wizards from BG2. The first time you used a spell outside you got a warning, the second time you got nuked to hell. Now what is your relationship with them? And what happened to you in the past?

1.) First time

First time i ended up fighting them i got destroyed. I had no chanse at all and lost my whole party in a few seconds. After i got over this shock i made sure to never ever cast a spell outside. And if i forgot about this then the moment i saw that shadow door i went all white in my face and reloaded. When i learned about the magic license it was one of the first things i got in my new games. Got 5 000 gold and rushed over there.

2.) When you got used to the game and combat with mages.

I was still afraid of the cowled wizards. But once i got really high level with awesome gear i would summon skeletal warriors, deva and use brute force to kill them. There was nothing tactical about this, just me throwing all my high level stuff at them. And even when i did that there was still a chanse of me dying.

3.) Today

Now i sometimes solo them with a level 12 mage. With Spell immunity : Divinity, mislead and cloud kill / death fog i can kill them quite easily. When i play SCS improved mages i wait until i get higher levels to fight them. I'm not as worried about them anymore, and they have a chanse to drop some great level 8-9 spells.

So what about you?

Vampiric Wolves - surviving at early levels

$

I stumbled my way onto these forums looking for an answer on how to survive encounters with Vampiric Wolves because they seem a little overpowered for a party level 1-2 encounter (which is when I was running into them). But it seems that the original discussion was closed and I couldn't post the method I used, so I figured I'd fire up another thread on defeating Vampiric Wolves with limited character resources.

*SPOILER ALERT* - just a heads up because it involves acquiring certain NPCs, doing certain quests right away, acquiring new NPC's to BG:EE, that sort of thing.

So, this is how I am able to survive these encounters now, but I'd like to hear back from anyone else to see if I could've been doing better. Also, when I started out, I didn't know these creatures existed so I just had to adapt what I already had. :)

Started with a human Sorc (poorly rolled, I might add, with gobs of charisma and only a bit of dex and con since I played d&d before BG, and just made assumptions about SORCs). Took magic missile and chrome orb.

Skipping the fine details, I'll just post what was relevant;

Party was Imoen, Khalid, Jaheira, Neera, and Viconia (I was mostly rolling good and neutral, but wanted a cleric).

I finished up the Silke quest by killing her, this gave both Neera and my Sorc a magical staff (not that I wanted to have them in melee range with wolves, but I always have a backup plan). Neera was also given the Ring of Wizardry from FAI so she had 4 magic missiles at a time.

Ending up buying a magical mace for Viconia, but this can be avoided since she is level two when you pick her up, so she already has 'Spiritual Hammer'.

I had a +1 wakizashi for Jaheira (I know, not proficient, but had to use what I had access to.) Since I can't remember where I picked it up for sure (I want to say it was loot from the encounter where Dorn Il-Khan kills some old bandit partners) you can also use 'Shillelagh' so she has a magical weapon for the encounter. Also, I took 'Doom' to lower the Wolfs attack rolls, but I didn't take 'Armor of Faith' and I should have.

Khalid was actually stuck using Beruel's Retort +1 from Beregost since the +1 Mace for Viconia (also Beregost) cost almost all of my gold.

+1 Arrows for Neera, those aren't too expensive to have a few in the backpack...just in case.

The armor? Whatever I could get my hands on for free of course!

As for the fight (I only take on 1 Vampiric Wolf, by itself, fully rested and stocked, I ran otherwise); make sure to swap to magic weaps and ammo (obv).

Opened with 'Doom' (Jaheira), 'Chromatic Orb' (Main, but Neera could also), and 'Bless" (Viconia), everyone else just started whipping out damage, and making sure that Viconia was the closest to the Wolf (she was to be the tank).

'Barkskin' on Viconia before she has a chance to get 'Held' by the wolf, everyone else was just spamming ranged attacks and 2x magic missiles from both casters, and Jaheira is waiting until the wolf starts hitting Viconia so she doesn't get stun-locked (If you're going 'Shillelagh', this would be the time to cast it).

Finally, Viconia's last spell was 'Spirit Hammer', and then it was just the luck of the rolls while she waited to get stun-locked as everyone else in the party dished out damage.

I got away without too much damage but almost all my spells were exhausted, and I got a 1000 xp reward for my troubles =D

Hope this helps anyone looking for it, and I look forward to contributing more to the forums as I play.

Same thread as Barbarian vs Berserker: which is better?, but no bounds or limitations for the discussion, imagination is the only limit here :)!

Ps: no pool to avoid factions, if ppl don't like this way, post here cos i have no problem in closing this thread to another in pool format to be created.

Tell me about bards ...

$

As I have never played one and am now determined to turn Imoen into one. Unfortunately I'm not sure what a bard is supposed to have access to.

I've been trying to use EE Keeper to modify various NPCs - such as turning Minsc into one or the other of a berserker or a ranger - as a berserker he keeps 2 handed sword but switches fighting style to 2 handed sword instead of 2 handed fighting, as ranger he keeps 2 handed fighting but loses the sword. Sometimes I add a special ability - like a gift from the gods in compensation for whatever great service (I imagine) he did that resulted in his head injury and permanent loss of mental function. Protection from Evil is what I usually give him as an innate ability.

I turned Viconia to chaotic neutral solely because as a female player I don't have access to the "romance" module that lets you turn/save her (though I have hopes for coopting that somehow to a "just friends" sort of thing instead of romance/sex). Didn't change a thing else about her.

I have used EE Keeper to reduce Alora's level after I cheat her into the early game because she shows up as a L4 thief (no wonder she was so awesome, LOL!)

All of these worked fine, characters seem to continue on their paths as expected.

But trying to turn Imoen into a bard has not been working out so well, and I'm not sure how much of that may be a lack of support in EE Keeper for handling the thief abilities or to me not knowing what abilities a bard can actually have.

What I WANT is a bard who puts all her points into the non-stealing thief abilities such as Find Traps, Detect Illusions, and Set Traps primarily, with Move Silently and Hide in Shadows in only a minor way if at all, and ABSOLUTELY NO investment in either Open Lock or Pick Pocket.

All the stealy-stabby sorts of things that absolutely can't be skipped would be done by either Coran or Alora, whichever one I have in the current party. Coran, stealy-stabby, but Alora, I would only use for stealy things. Happy little halflings shouldn't go about backstabbing innocent monsters joyfully.

I have repeatedly read stuff that talks about adding points to (some bard)'s find traps or detect illusion, and then I've found other references that say bards ONLY have pickpocketing.

So give me the straight skinny - WHICH thief skills does the bard have access to?

And what's going on in EE Keeper that it can't seem to touch the actual thief abilities of even a straight-vanilla thief from the "Thief" tab? When I set each category (such as pick pocket) to a certain value on that tab, the change does not appear on the character when the save game is loaded back up. In fact sometimes it changes some OTHER thief ability altogether. In the meantime if you load the changed save game back into EE Keeper, it still shows the values you put in those fields, even though the game doesn't seem to see them...

Dynaheir vs Edwin (BG 1 + 2 spoilers) Question

Just wondering, are there any ramifications of killing Edwin in BG1 in BG2? Does he make any comment in BG2?

I just found out that if you already have Dynaheir with you when first speaking to Edwin, you can tell them to settle their differences and they'll duke it out. Naturally, Minsc butts in and the fight ends up being pretty one-sided.

I know that when you meet Xzar & Montaron in BG2 you get one dialogue option going "Woot? I thought you guys were dead?", don't know for sure if that's really related to my BG1 save where Jaheira and Khalid killed them. Drizzt also remembers if you attacked him or not, as I recall.

The no reload challenge (spoiler warning)

$

One of the most fun thing to do in BG is to play with no reload.

The point of the thread is for you to describe your attempts (failed or successful)

I'll start with mine (i just list the significative attempts, not the ones in which i died after 5 minutes). All these playthrough were on core rules difficulty (save for leveling, to get max hp)

- Fighter/mage/thief. Solo. Died in baldur's gate (level 5/5/6) from the mages upstairs of the magical shop (forgot their were casting horror...)
- Berserker. Solo. Died at level 6 from an ankheg, ambushing me while resting
- Inquisitor. In group of 4 (imoen, minsc, viconia). Still in progress (in cloakwoods)
- Berserker / mage (dual 7/8). Solo. Sill in progress (in catacombs at candlekeep). I should succeed it with this one (unless i do something dumb), as he is now 7/8 and almost unkillable (berserker kit is awesome)

My next try will be a solo sorcerer.

Some advices for those who want to try it :
- i find solo play easier than group play (as defense is paramount in no reload, and much easier to get on one character than on 6)
- very good knowledge of the game is necessary.
- when playing solo, never roll to save against a deadly effect (paralysis, horror, charm....) -> you need to get immunities (potions, items, abilities, spells) or you will die.
- always have an invisibility potion ready, as a panic button

Hi guy's I picked up BG2 last week to play once more while awaiting the BG: EE, BG2: EE resolution.

From a mod point of view I went with:

BG2 Tweak Pack
BG2 Fix Pack
WideScreen Mod

I haven't gone with Ascension as of yet. Do you think it's a must or not?

Also have I missed anything you would deem particularly important?

Best Dart Throwing F/Thief Builds?

$
0
0
Lately I've become fascinated with darts, as they seem to get the most attacks per round of anything, and when using darts of poison or stunning, this greatly increases the chances of these effects working. Stunning an opponent can make a gaping difference in the success of certain difficult battles. I want to keep this character as a thief, ultimately, as I'm too much of a fan of stealth (which comes in great for darts, as they have a shorter range than bows...so ya can get in close) and backstabbing (in this case I'm thinking quarterstaff, so I've got a blunt weapon).

A halfling f/t seems to be the best for this as far as a multi classed, due to the 19 DEX and halfling thrown weapon bonus, however, I'm considering trying this out as a duel classed human...starting out as a fighter and then dueling to thief at some point. I'm not entirely clear on how this works.

If I bring a human fighter to level 3, for instance, bringing darts to ***, and then duel to thief, adding another * in darts, will I have **** in darts when I get my fighter levels back? Likewise, could I bring this character to level 6 fighter, **** darts, place another * in darts when switching to thief and then have ***** in darts by late game BGEE?

What build(s) would you suggest? I also would love to have *** in quarterstaff if possible, in addition to something like the above.

Thanks for any input.

powergaming party (BG2 TOB,NPC and multiplayer)

What is the most powergaming party that you can think of?

two different groups of posts
1) multiplayer created party by player. What classes/races (and items)
2) charname + npc's. What npc's
-this is not 1 vs 2 but creating 2 different threads for 1 purpose is silly
-bg2 tob exp limit
-no mods

and why is this the most powergaming?

for example
F/M/T half-elf - like kensai mage but +100dmg with backstab
Kensai13/Mage - i think everyone know why kensai/mage
cleric/specjalist mage - healer who is almost immortal
mage slayer13/mage - antimage
edwin - most spells

npc's
F/M/T op op
sarevok dualed to mage op
edwin - op op op
aerie - op multi
keldorn - op dispell
Cernd - SS f yeah

like you can see I prefer magic :)

Isnt Dragon Age "templar class" = inquistor in BG?

Templar class has one spell, dispell magic and disrupt magic. Thats it.

And they are considered "fighter/warriors" in Dragon Age.

Just wierd how its considered a Paladin class... And also, in Dragon Age, templars like Alistair are specced tank with shield- which make sense for a great tank, who isnt gonna be interupted or stunned by magic.

Fighter->mage dual-class options

$

Assuming that one wanted to play a fighter->mage dual-class character, and that one wanted to switch from fighter to mage at level 7 or 9, which of the following options would you recommend?

a. Kensai -> mage. (The 'kensage' seems to be widely recommended, but is it really the 'best'? If so, what weapon should the kensai focus on?)

b. Berserker -> mage. (I'm not sure it makes RP-sense, but going berserk with a quarterstaff seems appealing, as do the berserker immunities. Can a berserker-mage cast spells while berserk?)

c. Fighter -> mage. (Becoming a grand master of a ranged weapon seems like a sensible thing for a mage. Perhaps even darts, for the attacks/round?)

I've left out the wizard slayer, since it makes *no* sense RP-wise, and is a terrible kit in any case.

The Beserker Death by Exhaustion is beyond irritating.

$

When you're 1st level, a Beserker fighter, have maximum hit points, and you travel too far or OMG rest, you DIE. The cause of death is an annoying glitch. During a very fun hardcore run this happened to me. But this quickly turned into a nightmare, that has yet to end. While traveling from the Bassilus map to the Safana map I encountered 3 gnolls. I am traveling with Neera and we are both 1st level, and the difficulty is set to hard. So one swing from those smelly beasts could mean instant decapitation. I went beserk and kept them at bay while Neera kept her distance and used the wand of MM. It was a fun fight, and we won. My beserker did not get hit, and yet when we resumed travel I arrived dead on the scene.

Infuriated, I decided to begin again from the auto-save with the hopes of repeating the same encounter and letting the chips fall where they may. And that's when hell became reality. Apparently, getting 3 gnolls as an encounter is as rare as meeting a beer vender at a funeral. I must have tried 30 times before giving up for the night. I get 2 wargs, or 4 dogs, but never the 3 gnolls. I am close to becoming real life beserk!!!!!!

kerblahh!!!
